IMPORTJanácek’s choral works draw on an extremely rich repertory of folksongs and folk tales. The composer employed idioms from Bohemian and Moravian traditions, with their characteristic folk dances and rustic nursery rhymes, and on the recently published Moravian Duets of his compatriot Antonín Dvorák, to convey a mixture of emotions, forever shifting between cheerfulness and melancholy. Daniel Reuss and Cappella Amsterdam are joined by tenor Thomas Walker and pianist Philip Mayers in this recording of rarely heard vocal music.

IMPORTPolish baritone Mariusz Kwiecien has won over audiences in many of the world’s greatest opera houses with his powerful interpretations (not to mention his rugged good looks). For his fi rst solo recital recording and harmonia mundi début, Kwiecien employs his mellifluous and burnished voice to great effect in a fascinating selection of favorite Polish, Russian and Czech arias. The result is a winning collection of operatic gems, both familiar and rare. Kwiecien is accompanied by the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lukasz Borowicz on the fi rst release from harmonia mundi’s new production offi ce in the United Kingdom.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDMare Nostrum (Latin for “Our Sea”) was a Roman name for the Mediterranean Sea, one of the most important
focal points of cultural, political and intellectual growth and exchange and dialogue in the history of humankind. In this lavishly illustrated CD-book, Jordi Savall and the musicians of Hespèrion XXI invite us to explore the facts, myths and legends of the Mediterranean and the sway it has had over many peoples and cultures — from Morocco to Israel, from Spain to Lebanon. Also featured on the recording are soprano Montserrat Figueras and Israeli singer Lior Elmaleh, one of the leading representatives of the new generation of performers of Andalusian music.
“Few artists today are as committed to exploring the fusion of musical cultures through history and the lessons that has for our own fractured age.”

IMPORTThe sumptuous music on this album contrasts the sacred and profane — from the fervor of cult of the Virgin Mary to the passion and ecstasy of Dido, Queen of Carthage. Focusing on works by 17th century Venetian Baroque composers, the album’s selections include Cavalli’s Lamento di Didone and Scarlatti’s Didone delirante (long thought lost) and a previously unrecorded cantata by Faggioli. Mezzo-soprano Stephanie d’Oustrac, accompanied by the ensemble Amarillis, offers powerful performances that evoke passion and virtue, worship and desolation.
IMPORTThe second Beethoven recording by David Grimal and the orchestra Les Dissonances is a benefi t album for the homeless. It features Beethoven’s fi fth symphony coupled with the Creatures of Prometheus overture and is presented in a special package that includes a DVD video focusing on preparations for the group’s October 2011 tour. Available only in PAL format, this DVD may not be playable on some home video players, but can be viewed on any computer with a DVD drive. The audio disc features exciting, exhilarating interpretations of these timeless masterpieces.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & multi-channel/ DSDJack Kerouac’s On The Road was released in 1957 and went on to become the textbook of the beat generation. To be forever-on-the-road was a new attitude in life, a present-day interpretation of the Bohemian type, and it came to inspire generations of pop musicians. For the arts, borders have always been irrelevant. Bach and Mozart sought inspiration in the music of all the countries around them. Bartók travelled endlessly. The works on the present CD were written by composers from nine European countries and the selection is nothing less than a journey through the trumpet repertoire of Europe. Wim Van Hasselt plays trumpet in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam and teaches at the Amsterdam Conservatory.

“The leading recording artist for his instrument... strong and beautiful readings... gorgeous,
rich in tone, and full of life.”— AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE
IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & multi-channel/ DSDThe chamber concerto was a popular genre with German and French Baroque composers. However, Italian composers, who concentrated on opera, sacred and secular music for voice, appear to have ignored it — with the exception of Vivaldi. Our modern image of the “Red Priest” is primarily that of a secular composer, yet much of his work was intended for performance in church. The importance of sacred music for solo voice in the oeuvre of Vivaldi emerges with a bold statistic: of his fi fty or so extant sacred vocal works, thirty are for solo voice. This disc featuring soprano Elin Manahan Thomas and the English ensemble Florilegium pairs three popular chamber concertos with the Laudate Pueri and the motet Nulla in Mundo.

IMPORTFollowing on the success of their recording of Benjamin Godard’s piano concertos, Dutton offers up the delightful piano concertos of Charles-Marie Widor, stylishly played by Martin Roscoe. Written during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, Widor’s concertos were performed by several of the fi nest French pianists of the day, yet for some unaccountable reason have dropped from the standard repertoire. The fi rst concerto is lyrical and soloistic, exhibiting an almost Chopinesque pianism, while in the second, the composer more closely integrates soloist and orchestra. All in all, this is a memorable and multi-faceted musical journey.
IMPORTDutton presents a survey of encores and light music once championed by conductor Dan Godfrey and the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra in the period between the Wars. The album’s mix of short symphonic works and the sort of tuneful light music conductor Godfrey favored is striking and makes for a delightful program. World premiere recordings include Armstrong Gibbs’ tuneful ballet music from The Betrothal and Ina Boyle’s Baxian tone poem The Magic Harp. Ronald Corp and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra capture the élan and charm of this music perfectly.

IMPORTThe third volume in Dutton’s pioneering Holbrooke series features Amy Dickson in the Saxophone Concerto — the fi rst British concerto for the instrument — and the ballet Aucassin and Nicolette, the latter forgotten since its run at Golders Green Hippodrome before the War. In both these sunny scores, we forget the grim, operatic Holbrooke evoking dark Celtic legends and revel in tuneful music that reminds us that he enjoyed considerable success as a composer of light music. The coupling is Richard Rodney Bennett’s delightful Seven Country Dances.
IMPORTComposer Frederick Shepherd Converse was a leading name in American music up to the Second World War. It was Converse who composed the fi rst American opera. Yet despite being widely heard in his day, after his death in 1940 he was soon eclipsed by the new generation of Copland, Harris and Barber. Featured here are his American Sketches, the Festival of Pan and the Song of the Sea, a tone poem after Whitman. These fascinating world premiere recordings are stylishly performed by Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart leading the BBC Concert Orchestra.

IMPORTThis recording of music by Arthur Benjamin brings the composer’s three string concertos together on one disc for the fi rst time. Featured works include the Violin Concerto, Elegy, Waltz and Toccata and the Romantic Fantasy for violin, viola and orchestra. Violinist Lorraine McAslan and violist Sarah-Jane Bradley are the featured soloists, accompanied by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra led by John Gibbons.
IMPORTConductor-composer Ronald Corp couples two supremely engaging choral works, pairing his own cantata And all the Trumpets Sounded with Michael Hurd’s appealing choral symphony The Shepherd’s Calendar. Both are world premiere recordings. Featured soloists are baritones Mark Stone and Roderick Williams, accompanied by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ronald Corp.

IMPORTIt has long been known that Moeran left sketches for an unfi nished Second Symphony. At last, conductor Martin Yates has realized and completed the sketches of Moeran’s symphony. Brilliantly played by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Yates’s baton, this is an exciting discovery that all lovers of British music will want to hear. The equally fascinating pairing is Yates’ orchestration of Ireland’s piano suite Sarnia: an island sequence. Both are world première recordings.
IMPORTDutton’s fourth recordings of music by Stanley Bate features the second Piano Concerto and the fi rst Sinfonietta. It is coupled with yet another discovery, the music of Franz Reizenstein — whose second Piano Concerto is grippingly played by Victor Sangiorgio. Reizenstein was one of the many composers and musicians who were forced to leave Germany when the Nazis came to power. The disc celebrates the centenary of the birth of both composers.

The sonatas realize a glorious synthesis between the severe style of German music and the fl exible and melodic writing of Italian music. IMPORTFrancesco Provenzale (1624-1704) was a key fi gure in Italian music, standing squarely between Monteverdi and Scarlatti and fi lling an important role in the development of the Neapolitan style. His Missa defunctorum (Requiem mass) was likely composed on the death of Phillip IV of Spain in 1666. Its conservative style must have seemed archaic to listeners in 1666, reminiscent of the music of the great Flemish composers of the early Renaissance. Mahler’s Seventh Symphony is sometimes referred as the “Song of the Night,” however this nickname was not Mahler’s own and he disapproved of it. In 1904, Mahler was enjoying great international success as a conductor, but he was also, at last, beginning to enjoy international success as a composer. The symphony was written during his annual summer holidays at his lakeside retreat over the course of two years. This performance featuring Zubin Mehta leading the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra was recorded live in 2007.

Brahms’ Fourth Symphony, his last, was completed in 1885 — twelve years before his death. It is particularly notable for its fi nale, a rare example of a symphonic chaconne that is adapted from the closing movement of Bach’s cantata Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich. Saint-Saëns’ Third Symphony is popularly known as the “Organ Symphony,” even though only two sections out of four feature the instrument. Zubin Mehta leads the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in taut and colorful performances, recorded live in Tel-Aviv in 2006-07.
IMPORTEr n o vo n Do h n á n y i was one of the most extraordinary Renaissance men in musical history.
In addition to being a composer and virtuoso pianist, he was director of the Franz Liszt Academy, conductor of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra and music director of Hungarian Radio. He was revered as a teacher — anyone who was anyone in Hungary was taught by him, among them Georg Solti. As a pianist-composer, his music grew out of the traditions of Liszt and Brahms, but his command of instrumental color and rhythmic élan is all his own. This volume, the fi rst of a complete survey from Martin Roscoe, encompasses nearly half a century of Dohnányi’s composing life, from the trenchant virtuosity of the Four Rhapsodies to the wit of the late Three Singular Pieces.

However, he certainly was not averse to a good tune: the two Romances abound in lush lyricism, while the magnifi cent Violin Concerto shows him continuing in the tradition of Beethoven and Brahms. No less a fi gure than Adolf Busch championed it — fi rst performing it when he was just sixteen. The young German violinist Tanja Becker-Bender, who has already made such an impact in recordings of Schulhoff and Paganini, is joined here by Lothar Zagrosek and the Berlin Konzerthausorchester.

IMPORTWho is Michael Head? His name may be largely forgotten, but Head’s compositions form part of the rich fabric of English song in the manner of those by Quilter, Gurney and Warlock. Born in 1900, Head worked modestly as a singer, pianist, teacher, broadcaster and adjudicator — writing his fi rst song (“The ships of Arcady”) at age 19 while studying at the Royal Academy of Music. Songs were at the center of Head’s composing life. He used to perform them as a kind of one-man band, accompanying himself at the piano. This disc presents a choice selection of his songs, setting poets such as Walter de la Mare, John Masefi eld and Christina Rossetti, many of them focusing on the many pleasures of England — its fl ora and fauna, its changing seasons and pastoral landscapes. They are sung by three of the brightest stars in today’s vocal fi rmament — Ailish Tynan (making her Hyperion debut), Catherine Wyn-Rogers and Roderick Williams, accompanied by pianist Christopher Glynn.

IMPORTFollowing their triumphant Casals encores disc, Alban Gerhardt and Cecile Licad are reunited for a disc of music by Fauré. His two cello sonatas are among the masterpieces of the cello repertoire, looking back to the 19th century but also with an edginess that may well refl ect the time in which they were written — during and immediately after the First World War. Remarkably, Fauré was in his seventies by the time he wrote them. There is some debate as to how fast the last movement of the fi rst sonata should go — so Alban Gerhardt has recorded two versions, to be programmed to the listener’s taste. Alongside the sonatas are some of Fauré’s most seductive bon-bons, including the Sicilienne, Élégie and the Papillon (so-named at his publisher’s insistence, much to Fauré’s annoyance as he hated fl uffy titles).

IMPORTThe overarching themes of this interesting collection of French Baroque concerts royaux and cantatas are war and peace. Composers Montéclair and Clérambault evoke the sounds of war with symphonies of trumpets, fi fes and drums, and a mood of peace with the dulcet tones of musettes. Martin Gester and his ensemble Le Parlement de Musique offer colorful and incisive performances of this fascinating repertoire. Both the title work, Montéclair’s Le Retour de la paix and Clérambault’s cantata L’isle de Délos feature the exciting young soprano Dorothée Leclair.
IMPORTThis dramatic virtuoso recital by pianist Jean-Frédéric Neuburger, recorded in January 2011 at the Cité de la musique in Paris, evokes the excessive, sensual and imaginative worlds of such Romantic poets as Lamartine and Lautrémont. At the heart of the program, the large, two-movement Sonata by Jean Barraqué was directly inspired by the then 24-year-old composer’s admiration for Beethoven and Debussy. Neuburger’s own composition Maldoror and Liszt’s Funérailles, performed in the fi rst part of the recital, display the piano in all the demiurgic violence of which it is capable. A selection from Debussy’s Images II closes the program.

IMPORTThe year 1981 saw the release of Michael Nyman, the fi rst Michael Nyman Band recording and a groundbreaking record that presented Nyman’s unique take on minimalism and experimental music. Long out of print, the album has been a rare and sought-after collectable for many years. This 30th anniversary CD reissue features a retro-look black vinyl CD in a replica gatefold LP-style sleeve. The album was originally produced by Nyman’s ex-Maidstone Art School student, David Cunningham, founder of the Flying Lizards and producer of every Nyman recording for the following ten years. Much of the music is material from the early fi lms of Peter Greenaway, but the album also includes In Re Don Giovanni, Nyman’s classic deconstruction of the “Catalogue Aria” from Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Michael Nyman was a turning point in the composer’s career, marking the beginning of a new style and direction that ultimately shaped nearly all of the composer’s future works.

IMPORTOne of the most exciting pianists of the younger generation, American Jonathan Biss is widely regarded for his artistry, musical intelligence and deeply felt interpretations, winning international recognition for his orchestral, recital and chamber music performances and for his award-winning recordings. He performs a diverse repertoire ranging from Mozart and Beethoven, through the Romantics to Janácek and Schoenberg as well as works by contemporary composers. This marks the debut release in Biss’ complete cycle of Beethoven’s piano sonatas for Onyx. The first volume features three works from Beethoven’s early period and one from the middle — the famous ‘Les Adieux,’ Op.81a in E-fl at major. This fascinating program illustrates how Beethoven’s sonatas developed from the early, virtuosic works of the 1790s to the assured compositions of his middle period.

IMPORTVladimir Sverdlov was born in 1976 into a family with a long tradition of producing great artists. His grandfather David Ashkenazy, a formidable composer and pianist, and his famous uncle Vladimir Ashkenazy, were highly infl uential in his development. Sverdlov is a controversial pianist. His playing is full of extreme contrasts and deep emotions and often has a profound impact on his audience. This recording featuring Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Balakirev’s Islamey is not for the faint of heart. Prepare for some unexpected (sound) effects.
IMPORTArmenian pianist Sergei Babayan studied in Moscow with Mikhael Pletnev before settling in the US in 1989. He was a prizewinner in several important competitions — the Hamamatsu Competition in Japan (where he won fi rst prize), and the Queen Elisabeth and Busoni competitions. A wonderful interpreter of the great Romantics Rachmaninoff and Liszt, he is equally at home with Bach and Scarlatti, of whom a generous selection of sonatas is recorded on this CD, formerly issued on the Pro Piano label. It is a stunning display of clarity, elegance, virtuosity and heartfelt emotion.

IMPORTCyprien Katsaris is without doubt one of the most remarkable pianists of the 20th Century. His almost limitless technique enables him to produce fascinating flights of invention and imagination, spreading dazzling colors and magical sound effects. One of the highlights of his extended discography are his performances of Liszt’s transcriptions of Beethoven symphonies (numbers 4 and 5 are included in this set). His close affi nity for Liszt’s music is also shown in Katsaris’ devilish rendering of the Mephisto Waltzes and a transcendental interpretation of the Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude.
IMPORT“He is the only other pianist,” said the legendary Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli of Sergio Fiorentino (1927-1998). How is it that one of the greatest musical geniuses of the 20th century is still so unknown? The answer points to the self-effacing personality of the artist — Fiorentino was no career-hunter, lacked a big ego and was always focused on serving the music instead of himself. This ten disc set presents the recordings Fiorentino made between 1994 and 1997 in the Siemens-villa in Berlin. It is a fi tting tribute to the talent of this a great musical mind and formidable virtuoso. The set features works by Schumann, Liszt, Chopin, Schubert, Rachmaninoff, Prokofi ev, Scriabin and Bach.

IMPORTThis outstanding recording featuring Maurizio Pollini performing the complete Chopin Études is being offered for the fi rst time by Testament. It was made by EMI at Abbey Road a few months after Pollini had won the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Peter Andry, who produced the recording, later recalled Pollini’s play-through of the fi rst set as a spine-tingling experience. “This was pianism of the very fi nest kind,” he said. “Rarely had I heard such perfection. He seemed to play these demanding works effortlessly. I remember the occasion even now as one of my greatest musical experiences.” The recording reproduces with striking immediacy and clarity a performance that captures the 18-year-old pianist’s sensitive and sympathetic emotional response to these works. This is a superb addition to Pollini’s extensive recorded catalogue and shows this great artist at the very beginning of his professional career as a musician of the highest caliber.

IMPORTIf both the Bruckner ninth and the Schubert overture that opened this 1960 concert with the Berlin Philharmonic were Joseph Keilberth regulars, the Berg Violin Concerto was a newcomer to his repertoire. It became a personal favorite; it was also his fi rst-ever Berg score. Keilberth prepared it for the fi rst time in December 1955 for a Hamburg State Opera concert with André Gertler. “It’s really coming together now,” he noted, “but much still sounds as if it’s wrong.” A little later Keilberth wrote to his son Thomas, “I’m pleased that the Berg concerto now means more to you. For me, it’s the only 12-tone work that I like.” The performance on this specially-priced set features violinist Christian Ferras.
IMPORTAt the beginning of her career, Galina Ustvolskaya was regarded as an outsider in the Association of Composers in the former USSR. Today she is considered one of the greatest female composers in Russia. The fact that she mainly composed for the desk drawer in those early years, however, was not only due to the repressive ignorance surrounding her, but also due to creative psychological reasons. “My work routine is considerably different from that of other composers,” Ustvolskaya says. “I write when I get into a state of grace. Afterwards, the work is left to rest for a while, and when its time has come, I will release it. When its time doesn’t come, I destroy it.” This collection of works offers the listener a fascinating sampling of the results of this thoughtful creative process.

File In: JazzGenerally considered one of the driving forces of Cool Jazz, alto saxophonist Lee Konitz has also performed successfully in bebop and avant-garde settings. He was one of the few altoists to retain a distinctive sound in the 40s, when Charlie Parker exercised a tremendous infl uence on other players. Konitz’s association with the Cool Jazz movement of the 1940s and 50s includes participation in Miles Davis’ epochal Birth of the Cool sessions. Composer and saxophonist Anthony Braxton has released well over 100 albums since the 1960s. Braxton’s music is diffi cult to categorize, and because of this, he likes to reference his works as simply “creative music.” Saxophonist and composer Steve Lacy came to prominence in the 1950s as a progressive Dixieland musician and went on to a long and prolifi c career. He worked extensively in experimental jazz and dabbled in free improvisation, but Lacy’s music was typically melodic and tightly-structured.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile In: BluesThere are a handful of landmark albums in any genre. In the blues, one of them is Muddy Waters’ Folk Singer. Originally released in 1964, Folk Singer was the only acoustic album Waters ever recorded, thus becoming the fi rst and perhaps best blues concept album ever. Waters of course started out playing acoustic blues in the Delta, and he’s clearly very comfortable in this return to his roots, which was designed to appeal to the mid-1960s surge of interest in folk music. His supporting cast includes a very young Buddy Guy on guitar, Willie Dixon at the upright bass and Clifton James on drums. The recording has enormous presence with ample room for Waters’ booming voice to resonate. APO’s remastered Super Audio CD includes two bonus tracks.

On its release in 1975, Wish You Were Here topped the album charts in both the UK and the U.S. Refl ecting the band’s thoughts of the time on the music business and exploring themes of absence, the album contains the classic cut “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” a tribute to founding band member Syd Barrett. As they did with their previous release, Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd made great use of studio effects for this, their ninth album overall. Recorded in Benin in 1958, 1969 and in 1996-1999, the pieces on this album and the various photographs (since before 1950 to 2009) exemplify the richness and the diversity of Yoruba singing and musical instruments. Through ritual and entertainment music, voices of memory rise unchanged for many decades. The three singers of Insingizi perform traditional Ndebele songs, warrior chants, as well as political and revolutionary songs from Zimbabwe. The group says, “The insingizi is a rain bird. The female has a different song to the male, so when they sing together, they sound like a chorus. We like to think our own sound is as beautiful as these birds.” The Jongmyo Jeryeak refers to a combination of vocal and instrumental music and dances performed once a year at the Jongmyo royal shrine. For about 600 years, this solemn and majestic ritual music has been performed in honor of the royal ancestors of the Korean Joseon dynasty.

In Corsica, the voice reigns supreme — from the polyphonic intensity of paghjella and the poetic invention of chjama è rispondi, to lullabies, laments and funeral orations. However, the island also has a rich and varied instrumental repertoire. It includes music for the pifana pastorale fl ute, pirula fl ute, the powerful cialamedda, the cetera and more recently adopted instruments like the violin, guitar, mandolin and accordion. Songs, fl utes, bagpipes, guimbards, fi ddles and cimbaloms display the diversity of the music from Walachia, Hornacko and Kopanice. This collection of lullabies and Carnival, work, wedding, shepherd and bandit music is an invitation to listen to musical traditions as they are still performed today. Finally, Ocora’s album of Russian music for wind instruments features Boris Efremov leading the Moscow Chorus of Horn Players and the Folk Ensemble Ulitsa in a fascinating suvey of the genre.
