August marks the triumphant return of pianist Maria João Pires, who makes her Onyx début playing Beethoven concertos backed by Daniel Harding and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra (p.21). Keyboard fans will welcome the launch of Hyperion’s new Classical Piano Concerto series, which kicks off with Howard Shelley playing little-known works by Dussek (p.17). Violinist Tanja Becker-Bender is the soloist on volume sixteen of the label’s Romantic Violin Concerto series (p.16). The late Sir Colin Davis is featured in a set of Haydn symphonies on LSO Live, and Sascha Goetzel leads the Borusan Istanbul Symphony Orchestra in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade for Onyx (pp.19-20). Vocal music priorities include Bach Cantatas on Channel with the Magdalena Consort (p.5) and ancient Celtic church music with the Choir of Gonville and Caius College on Delphian (p.6). IMPORTOn May 29, 1913 the début performance of Stravinsky’s ballet Le Sacre du Printemps created one of the biggest scandals in the history of music. Published eight years after its inception, the ballet was later modified by the composer. On this

fascinating release, conductor François-Xavier Roth, with special permission of Boosey & Hawkes editions and with the assistance of musicologist Louis Cyr, has restored the score of Le Sacre du Printemps to the original version used at the work’s première. The disc also features the first version of the ballet Petrouchka.

IMPORTThe vocal and instrumental pieces on this recording from Alla francesca focus on the historical performance of medieval songs and poetry in Occitan and northern French and the essential role of the jongleurs alongside the troubadours and

trouvères. The majority of the songs in this selection are in Occitan, the language of the troubadours. These poets all shared the language and the art that they termed trobar. The texts belong to various genres, and display different styles including canso, sestina, tenso, descort and chanson de mal-mariée.

Around two hundred have survived, and are an eloquent expression of his opinion that, “true music should be for the honor of God and the recreation of the soul”. This collection features three of Bach’s best-loved cantatas performed by the Magdalena Consort led by Peter Harvey. Vocal lines are sung one-to-a-part, in the style originally championed by Joshua Rifkin, which lends these performances an air of chamber music. IMPORTThis disc from Delphian with the Edinburgh Quartet features chamber works by composer James MacMillan, written between 1982 and 2011, providing three snapshots of his evolving style. Influences from Wagner to folk music are heard

in works that are often visionary in scope. The Edinburgh Quartet was founded in 1960 and quickly became established as one of Britain’s foremost chamber ensembles.

IMPORTThe brilliant young Polish-American pianist Adam Golka has won widespread critical and popular acclaim for his brilliant technique and emotional depth. He has garnered international prizes including the 2008 Gilmore Young Artist Award

IMPORT For more than thirty years, the career of composer Étienne Moulinié was inseparably linked with the patronage of Gaston d’Orléans (1608-60), brother of Louis XIII. In his Mélanges sur des sujets chrétiens, which he regarded as his magnum opus, Moulinié claimed the right to a compositional freedom that would “purify music and make it wholly chaste.” Some of the finest pieces from the collection feature on this recording by Sébastien Daucé’s Ensemble Correspondances, showing just how successfully the composer achieved his aim.

IMPORT While Dvorák’s Symphony No.6 is clearly inspired by the Symphony No.2 of his friend and champion Johannes Brahms, its middle movements are more in the Slavonic tradition. The Suite Op.98b, written when Dvorák was director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York, is an exotic patchwork of Amerindian and Afro-American music – with a pronounced Bohemian accent. IMPORTGerman violinist Tanja Becker-Bender returns to the Romantic Violin Concerto series along with Hyperion house band the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Garry Walker. Volume sixteen features concertos by Busoni and Strauss. In D major, the key of Beethoven’s and Brahms’s violin concertos, Busoni’s Violin Concerto is clearly intended to continue their lineage although it never descends into mere imitation. The seventeen-year-old Strauss wrote his Violin Concerto during his final year at the Ludwigsgymnasium. The work is fairly unknown on the concert platform, but Becker-Bender’s interpretation should win it new friends.

After giving concerts in Stockholm last October, she went directly into the studio with Daniel Harding and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and this remarkable recording is the result. These are performances of such passion, poetry and drama - Beethoven as he should sound, just as if you are hearing these great concertos for the first time. IMPORTThe Monastery of Montserrat draws legions of pilgrims to Catalonia, eager to visit the Black Virgin. Legend has it that in the year 880 a miraculous vision led the shepherds in the area to a cave where they found an image of the Savior’s mother. The Livre

Vermeil is basically a manual for a pilgrimage to Monserrat. It also contains the notation (music and lyrics) for songs of pilgrimage. This recording from Paraty features a selection of these songs, performed by La Camera delle Lacrime led by Bruno Bonhoure.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Bi-channel Stereo/ DSDThis recording is an echo of the second performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No.13 in December of 1962. It still features the original text by Yevtushenko in spite of Khrushchev’s

order to modify it so as not to pay homage only to the Jews assassinated in the Ukrainian ravine at Babi Yar. Kyrill Kondrashin succeeded in making this a heroic, impassioned ballad - tinged with humor but vengeful and funereal. Also featured here are excerpts from October - Prokofiev’s sole patriotic cantata, written in the same titanic, specifically Russian vein.

IMPORTReissue - Previously Released June 1998Stravinsky’s short, charming opera Le rossignol is rarely performed or recorded. Written in 1913-14 after the Rite of Spring, its libretto, based on The Nightingale by Hans Christian Andersen, was co-

written by the composer and Stepan Mitussov. The opera’s first performance was given in May 1914 at the Palais Garnier in Paris in a production by Sergei Diaghilev. This disc featuring André Cluytens, back in print after a long hiatus, presents the work’s first ever commercial recording, made in mono in 1955.

IMPORTMetamorphosen is the first in a series of ten recordings of the music of Enjott Schneider on the Wergo label. Schneider is a German businessman, composer, musicologist, and music educator. As a composer he is known for his film work, having won

the Bavarian Film Award in 1990, the Filmband in Gold in 1991, and the Deutscher Fernsehpreis in 2007. Many of Schneider’s compositions refer to well-known works from music history or to the idiomatic stylistic tendencies of individual composers, in order to then create something new through metamorphosis.

IMPORT This collection provides insight into the sensitive and exciting sound aesthetics of the composer Malika Kishino. Nature and beauty constitute the main points of reference of her oeuvre. Japanese culture and its aesthetics leave a mark on Kishino’s

music, yet it is futile to look for anything reminiscent of the traditional music of her home country. Nature, especially optical and visual phenomena or physical states, are an inspiration for the structure and character of her works which she herself describes as sound organisms.

IMPORT Wergo presents a collection of works by contemporary German composer Franz Martin Olbrisch. Olbrisch studied Composition and Music Theory at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. Up until 1989, he composed predominantly

instrumental works before adopting a more interdisciplinary and multimedia approach in the 1990s. He is currently a professor of composition at the Studio for Electronic Music of the University of Music Carl Maria von Weber Dresden. This disc features four major works that employ both traditional forces and combinations of instruments and live electronics.

IMPORT David Brynjar Franzson, one of the leading Icelandic composers of his generation, currently resides in New York. This disc from Wergo features his 2001 work entitled The Negotiation of Context, played by Yarn|Wire. The composition is made

up of three independent pieces, each assembled from various sounds and contexts on top of a topography of pre-existing programs. In them, the actions of one performer extend the actions of the other, and only through the combined actions of the two performers is a given sound produced.

IMPORT Wergo’s Thinking of… is an homage to the double-bass player Stefano Scodanibbio, who died in 2012. It features eleven bass players, each recorded separately with ten different sound engineers in seven different countries. The first part of the

album features the title work by Sebastian Gramss, who also produced the album and is one of the players. The second part of the album is a collection of eleven solos in which the players share their personal connections to Scodanibbio’s work. The album ends with a live recording of a duo by Scodanibbio and Gramss from the Altstadtherbst Festival in Düsseldorf in 2008.
