Bartók’s second Violin Concerto has long been an audience favorite. However, his first concerto, written thirty years before and only rediscovered after the composer’s death, has a fascinating story all its own and deserves much wider fame. True to her custom, Isabelle Faust has gone back to the multiple musical sources of the Violin Concerto No.1 — a work that was written ‘straight from the heart,’ since Bartók’s romance with a young violinist lay at the core of its creative process. Rising star Daniel Harding provides thrilling accompaniment.

Hyperion's key releases of the month provide plenty of thrills, with Stephen Layton leading the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge in a second volume of Handel's Chandos Anthems (p.7) and pianist Cédric Tiberghien playing Dubois on the 60th volume in the Romantic Piano Concerto series (p.9). Other classical releases of note include the debut release on Riccardo Muti's new Ducale label (p.5) and SFS Media's TruHD Blu-ray video release of Michael Tilson Thomas' Keeping Score: Stravinsky, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the première of Le Sacre du Printemps (p.13). Our jazz releases offer plenty of heat this month. First up are the legendary Chucho Valdés and the Afro-Cuban Messengers in their debut release on Jazz Village, Border-Free (p.19). Chucho is on top form, offering a fascinating blend of influences ranging from Flamenco to Moroccan Gnawa. Next up, Joe Barbieri offers a heartfelt tribute to Chet Baker on his new release for Chant du Monde entitled Chet Lives! (p.18). The month is rounded out with Analogue Productions' three spectacular SACD remasters of classic albums by Elvis Presley (pp.21).

IMPORTThis recording by François-Xavier Roth and his period-instrument orchestra Les Siècles features Debussy’s orchestral masterpiece La Mer, alongside a previously unrecorded early work, the Première Suite d’orchestre. Little is known about the composition of the suite, other than the fact that the young composer probably wrote it in 1882 while he was still a student at the conservatoire. Although the existence of a first symphonic suite was known, all trace of its manuscript had been lost. Finally located in 2008, the orchestral version was incomplete (the third movement is missing), and the only surviving complete version is one for piano-duet. The Cité de la musique subsequently commissioned Philippe Manoury to complete the orchestration using these sources.

IMPORTThe city of Prague was a cultural hotspot in the 1920s and 30s. Three population groups, enriched by emigrants from Russia, the Ukraine, Germany and Austria, competed with one another but also inspired each other. This was the city of the composers on this recording by Werner Herbers and the Ebony Band, long known as champions of unknown or forgotten music from the first half of the 20th century. In the repertoire on this album we hear the old and the new, tradition and renewal, but above all, imagination and talent. When the border between East and West opened up in 1991, this music had hardly been heard in the West for some fifty years, having been suppressed first by the Nazis and then by suffocating communist rule.

IMPORTSaverio Mercadante’s opera I due Figaro saw its first modern staging in Salzburg under the direction of the Italian maestro Riccardo Muti. Only in recent years have musicologists acknowledged Mercadante’s pivotal role in the development of the Italian Bel canto. I due Figaro presents an amusing subject which by affinity forms a trilogy with Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. This debut release on the Ducale label was recorded live in 2011 at the Teatro Aligheri, Ravenna.

IMPORTHandel’s beautiful, intimate settings of liturgical texts written for the First Duke of Chandos are among his less well-known choral works. With this second volume of Chandos Anthems from Trinity College Choir, Cambridge they are proven to also to be among his loveliest. They are a perfect example of the composer’s English style, as heard in Acis & Galatea and oratorios such as Judas Maccabaeus. The soloists on this recording include internationally acclaimed Handelians Susan Gritton and Iestyn Davies, joined by the young tenor Thomas Hobbs, whose warm, lyrical tone is perfect for this repertoire. The choir sings with their usual youthful exuberance, tempered with elegance, style and precision, under the expert guidance of Stephen Layton.

IMPORTRupert Gough and the Choir of Royal Holloway offer listeners another f a s c ina t ing album of contemporary
Baltic music. The primary work on the recording is based on Estonian folk hymns collected in the early twentieth century by Cyrillus Kreek, who was the Estonian equivalent of Bartók or Grainger. During the Soviet era, the singing of these religious songs was forbidden and the entire genre was all but forgotten. By the end of the twentieth century, fresh light could be shone on these folk collections and composer Tonu Korvits was particularly struck by the music’s fresh possibilities. In writing Kreek’s Notebook, Korvits both pays homage to Kreek and presents his own totally modern take on the folk hymn idiom. Although there is a dramatic unity to this eight-movement work, there is much diversity in timbre and scoring. The effect is improvisatory in the creative ornamentation of the vocal lines, and suffused with dreamy textures that bring to mind the great tradition of Eastern European choral writing.

IMPORTThe French pianist Cédric Tiberghien has made several highly acclaimed recital and chamber recordings. Now he joins the impressive roster of pianists who have contributed to Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series. On this release, Tiberghien is accompanied by Andrew Manze and the BBC Scottish Symphony in three works by Théodore Dubois that present a captivating panorama of the composer’s stylistic evolution. The Concerto-capriccioso of 1876 seems like a preliminary study in the style of such composers as Weber and Mendelssohn, whereas the highly Romantic Concerto in F minor (1897) is reminiscent of Saint-Saëns. The completely unknown Suite for piano and strings (1917), for its part, resembles a neoclassical pastiche.

IMPORTOrganist André Isoir combines a technical virtuosity with an inner reflection that elevates the instrument to a whole new level. This specially priced three disc reissue includes J.S. Bach’s five solo organ Concertos, six Trio Sonatas and works for organ and orchestra. Skillfully backed by Le Parlement de Musique under the direction of Martin Gester, Isoir’s illuminating performances have been carefully remastered from the original Calliope recordings by the enterprising young label La Dolce Volta.
IMPORTArnold Schoenberg, composer of the celebrated monodrama Pierrot lunaire, wrote five sets of piano pieces that roughly correspond to various phases of his stylistic development. Despite moving from a tonal idiom to atonality and then to twelve-note writing, these works retain a remarkable stylistic unity. In performances of great finesse, pianist Florent Boffard showcases these fascinating pieces, written by a master composer whose works and theories exerted a profound influence on most of the 20th century. Also included with the recording is a bonus DVD with a film about Schoenberg featuring Boffard.

For this offering, Rogé is joined by his wife Ami in a program of French masterworks for orchestra by Debussy and Ravel in arrangements for two pianos. It features Ravel’s 1908 transcription of Debussy’s Fêtes, Rogé’s own arrangement of La mer, Ravel’s Rhapsodie espagnole and the joyful Scherzo by Camille Saint-Saëns.
IMPORT / SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDPraga’s second SACD anthology of historic recordings of music by Manuel de Falla includes a diverse selection of works performed by a wealth of star performers. This Blu-ray disc reissue commemorating the 100th anniversary of the premiere of The Rite of Spring features Dolby TrueHD 96K audio. In 1913, the work’s shocking music and dance may have provoked a riot, but soon afterwards it was recognized as perhaps the most revolutionary piece of the century. On this disc, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony take you from the salons of St. Petersburg to the villages where Stravinsky found inspiration in the earthy power of Russian folk music and dance, to the cultural crossroads of prewar Paris. Presented for the first time on Blu-ray, Keeping Score: Stravinsky features a thought-provoking documentary and brilliant live concert performances.

IMPORTZeit(t)räume, dedicated to works by Stockhausen and Berio, features soprano Claudia Böttcher and pianist Jovita Zähl. Stockhausen’s music box cycle Tierkreis is presented here in a version for soprano and piano alongside his Klavierstück IX, which exemplifies principles of his serial thinking. In Berio’s Sequenza III, a wealth of emotional states is expressed, while the special charm that characterizes Quattro Canzoni poplari is rooted in the composer’s fascinating interpretations of traditional folk songs.
IMPORTWritten over a span of forty years, these compositions by Sofia Gubaidulina have become staples of the double bass literature. In Pantomime, one immediately senses a certain theatricality, which is evoked by dramatic pauses and dynamic progressions. Originally written for cello, the Preludes were later arranged for double bass. For In Croce, Gubaidulina pairs the bass with a bayan, (a Russian accordion). The work was inspired by the composer’s experiments with folk instruments. Bassist Daniele Roccato is accompanied by pianist Fabrizio Ottaviucci and bayan player Massimiliano Pitocco.

DOMESTICFile in: GospelBeyond The 4 Walls marks the triumphant return of the Campbell Brothers to studio recording after a hiatus of far too many years. Since they were first heard outside their church almost fifteen years ago, the group has been on an incredible and often arduous journey, balancing their faith with their desire to take their music to new audiences. The brothers alternatively pluck heartstrings and wail righteously as practitioners of Sacred Steel — African-American gospel music with electric steel guitar and vocals. National Public Radio said that the Campbell Brothers’ music is, “every bit as earth-shattering as (Robert) Johnson’s music was in the ‘30s. It’s a soul-stirring blend of gospel and the power and volume of electric blues and rock, a sound as hot as brimstone that kicks holy butt. It’s also shredding perceptions of country’s signature instrument and the limitations of church music.”

IMPORTFile in: JazzThere are plenty of fine mus i c i an s who have celebrated Chet Baker the trumpet player, but
far fewer who have given fitting tribute to Chet Baker’s equally compelling vocals. Joe Barbieri is without a doubt a worthy candidate. With his smooth yet fragile tone, his acute yet profound sensitivity and his ability to leave his own ego totally to one side, Barbieri tackles Chet’s repertoire with a wise man’s simplicity and an admirer’s humble respect. Originally from Naples, Barbieri has already demonstrated his ample talents on albums including his 2012 Chant du Monde release Respiro. Like Chet’s, his voice brushes lightly over us rather than caressing us, maintaining a precarious balance and a natural, innocent touch. Chet Lives! is the selfless homage of an eternal fan.

IMPORTFile in: JazzCuba’s foremost j a z z p i a n i s t Chucho Valdés — winner of five GRAMMY® Awards and three Latin GRAMMY® Awards — has developed a brand new repertoire. Boasting a new line-up for his band, The Afro-Cuban Messengers, and a guest appearance from saxophonist Branford Marsalis on three tracks, his new album Border-Free takes us through an eclectic range of pieces. Alongside new sources of inspiration (the music of the North American Indians and of the Arab-Andalusian culture), the album is infused with the verve of Valdés’s early trail-blazing Cuban jazz ensemble Irakere, his nostalgia for Cuban big bands, the punch of hard bop, the magical rhythms of the Yoruba drums and of course the spiritual lyricism that is the mark of all great jazz.

IMPORTFile in: JazzSinger Mary Stallings has enchanted audiences around the world with her divine musicality, elegant stage presence, and a voice that is, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, “supple and timeless, encompassing the whole history of music.” Stallings’s more than forty years of experience — from her start with the bands of Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie to the undiluted passion of her solo recordings — shine through with every note. The New York Times says she’s, “perhaps the best jazz singer alive today” and her latest HighNote recording offers ample proof. With the supremely gifted pianist, composer and arranger Eric Reed as Music Director, Stallings offers ten tunes that show the full range of her considerable talents. From bluesy swing to hushed seductive tones, Mary Stallings has it all.
IMPORTFile in: JazzAndy Bey — vocalist, pianist and composer — could be called a late bloomer. He’s been performing professionally since he was a kid, but much of his long career flew under the press radar. Now he’s reaping real recognition, winning the Jazz Journalists Association award for best male jazz singer three times in the last few years while his work inspires the high priests of jazz criticism to florid prose. So here is Andy Bey, backed only by his own piano playing — which at one time, propelled the bands of Roland Kirk, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Cecil Taylor and Thad Jones/Mel Lewis — singing with a luxuriant, mature approach that pulls no punches. His delivery is totally unique. He has a message to get out, a story to tell and tell it he does. Featuring four of his own intensely personal compositions the set list is as thought-provoking as it is satisfying, just like Andy Bey himself.

It’s no understatement to call Elvis Presley the chief catalyst of the rock ‘n’ roll era. During the 1950s, Presley’s records spent a collective 53 weeks in the No.1 chart position. These three SACDs from Analogue Productions were remastered from the original analog tapes by George Marino at Sterling Sound. The King’s best work has never sounded so intimate, detailed, present and alive. Stereo ‘57 was taken from 2-track recordings dating from sessions at which Presley produced material for two EPs and the soundtrack for the film “Loving You.” They’re the only known recordings surviving from the pre-stereo era. 24 Karat Hits features two dozen of the King’s greatest hits. This long-out-of-print audiophile favorite is known for its first-rate sound quality. Presley’s first full-length release after leaving the Army, aptly titled Elvis Is Back! was the answer to fans waiting eagerly for new material. All of the album’s songs would go on to become monumental worldwide hits.

GOLD CD
DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: Pop - RockFrom the moment she first appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1979, Rickie Lee Jones has challenged her listeners and the establishment with an absorbing musical vision that defies border and classification. Neither punk nor pop, she tottered on a thread of her own device, jazz — the old musical kind — and R&B, the Motown thread that permeates her work. Her self-titled debut album, released in ‘79 by Warner Bros., was a multi-million selling hit. Jones secured five GRAMMY® Award nominations, and won Best New Artist in 1980. Traffic from Paradise, released in 1993, features contributions from Leo Kottke, David Hidalgo and Jim Keltner, among others.
DOMESTICPreviously Available as CAPP 027 (753088000270) Deleted June 2002File in: Pop - RockThis album finds Janis Ian’s voice in its purest, most vital form ever. The tracks were recorded as live as possible without sounding retro. This 1992 all-analogue recording, praised as much for the artist’s too infrequently heard talents as for its recorded dynamics, is now available on an equally meticulous transfer to gold-plated CD, returned to the catalog after a 10 year absence. Matched with Ian’s very personal songs, delivered in a voice that draws you in close in confidence, Breaking Silence is one of the very few recordings of recent years that by reproducing a pure analogue sound, has attained true audiophile status. This CD has been remastered using the 20+16 Ultra Matrix Processing. This mastering technique enables more information to be extracted from the analog tapes to be encoded and transferred to the CD master. This combination creates the truest and most accurate CD master from the original analog recording, and is the finest analog-to-digital transfer process currently available.
