No outfoxing Leicester: owners aim to keep winners together

As predicted, the annual parade of fashion and star power at the Met Gala on Monday night included an array of interpretations on the evening’s vibe: “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”

That’s the name of an exhibit opening Thursday that set the tone for the star-studded evening that raises millions for the Metropolitan Museum of Art each year. This time around, the idea was to explore the convergence of handmade and machine-made elements in fashion, past, present and future.

Technology, thanks to Marchesa

and IBM, wired up the buzz for a dainty gown with ombre-painted flowers worn by Karolina Kurkova. It was a dusty blue tulle and the flowers were outfitted with 150 LED lights that changed colors, based on a “cognitive” analysis of the brand’s color palette. The geeks correlated data from hundreds of images of Marchesa gowns with and related social media sentiment in a show of how technology can enhance the human imagination.

Besides, Kurkova said, her battery pack kept her warm. Claire Danes also lit up in a pale blue, thanks to a

wired-up dress Zac Posen has been teasing for days on social media.

Looking at you Lady Gaga, and your ribbed bodysuit from Versace. And, of course, your towering platform shoes and metallic silver jacket. And looking at you Katy Perry, and your black velvet Prada gown with the gold embellishment that looked like it could hurt some-one. Oh, and your black helmet hair and little Tamagotchi digital pet you called your “tech element.”

Other ragers: Madonna exposed her bum and Nicki Minaj looked all fierce and sexy in a strappy, sparkly black number with lots of buckles designed by her date, Jeremy Scott. He wore an exoskeleton suit of sparkles. (ap)

NEW YORK — They came as robots and gladiators, light-up princesses and high-haired goddesses shimmering in green, copper and silver.

Putu Suaka, the 54 years old man, who was sentenced to death in 2008 for murdering a Karangasem police officer, is now awaiting execution.

Since he was sentenced, he has spent two years in a Karangasem

At first Suaka faced the situation calmly and did his best to get along with the other inmates in the Karangasem Prison. He also took part in the edu-cational program offered there. However, when the Amlapura National Courts sentenced the defendant to death, his face immediately changed and presum-ably so too did the situation in the prison.

Kuta BaliDENPASAR — A number of recent cases of police officers being killed has drawn concern from various parties, including member of the National Police Commission, Edi Saputra Hasibuan. When met at the Forensic Medicine Department at Sanglah Hospital on Monday (May. 2), he expressed his condolences to the family of the police officer who was stabbed by a foreigner and another officer alleged to have committed suicide in Karangasem.

“Surely this is concerning for us and we want to know why this could happen. We’d like to know why the brutality of the foreigner scheduled to be deported could claim a fatality”, he said.

According to Hasibuan, police officers need to be vigilant and careful when taking legal action and must also comply with proceedures when car-rying out their duties. “In this case however there are uknown factors that could have led to the officer being stabbed to death”, he said.

This incident provides an example that his institution can use when providing input to the president about the need for police to be given some guarantee of safety while carrying out their duties. “I think there needs to be some kind of guarantee of safety for police so that they will not hesitate to carry out their tasks”, he said.

After many police deaths, either from carrying out law enforcement du-ties or from terrorist threats, the National Police Commonssion has often proposed that government provide police officers with guarantees of safety and safety insurance. “ At the very least police officers should be provided with insurance”, he added.

Presently, police officers are only provided with insurance like ASABRI, the value of which is very low, while there are no guarantees of safety by the government. “ASABRI insurance only covers up to about IDR 10 million, but I do not know the exact amount”, he said.

Hasban added that the wife and children who are left behind when police officers die carrying out their job tasks, should be given special attention by police leadership. “Their children should aso be provided with scholar-ships”, he said.

He also explained that police officers have difficult tasks to carry out and that sometimes communication between subordinates and leaders are hampered by various factors. He therefore appealed to police leadership to pay attention to the condition of the officers working under them. If there is anything unusual, it may be necessary to have officers undergo psychological tests so that they can be helped. “If there is a problem with the personnel I think it is the task of leadership or the commander to provide enlightenment for their personnel” he said. In recalling Suaka’s confinement at the Prangasem Prsion, Gede Kubayan said that the prisoner from Bengkel Hamlet, Alasang-ker Village, Buleleng, was rarely visited by his family. He was only occasionally visited by his wife when he was first imprisoned for his appalling crime.

Based on observations made by the security guards, Suaka’s psy-chologist felt under pressure after efforts at an appeal for a lighter sentence were refused. Suaka was increasingly ill at ease with his confinement, particularly in cell 17 of the Karangasem Prison. Eventu-ally for security reasons, and out of compassion for this prisoner with a death sentence, Suaka was moved to Kerobokan Prison. At the time

Karangasem Prison was still being headed by Gusti Ngurah (2007-2012), before he was replaced by Bambang Maryanto (2012-2014) who was then replaced by Kusbi-yantoro (2014-now).

Unfortunately, based on the Ministry of Justice’s regulations and the Human Rights Board’s rec-ommendations the Karangasekm Prison forbids the cell where Sukaa was being held from being seen or documented.

Now, Suaka who has been nick-named “si balian” or ‘witch doctor’, awaits execution. This was con-firmed after President Joko Widodo refused to grant clemency to prison-ers on death row, by his signing of presidential degree No 34/G/2015 dated 31 Agustus 2015.

Putu Suaka was given the death sentence in Amlapura’s head Tribu-nal Court judge Nyoman Sumaana-da, on September 22, 2008 for the

premeditated murder of a Police officer and m=family member from Gamongan Traditional Village, Abang, Karangasem on January 26th, 2008. There were a total of four dead as a result of drinking potassium cyanide that Suaka said was a medicinal drink. Immediately after drinking the deadly brew, the four victims; Karangasem police officers Aiptu Komang Alit Srinata, his wife Ni Komang Suti and their two children 22 year old I Kadek Sugita and 20 year old I Gede Su-jana all died.

Having being held for 2 years in the Karangasem prison, the con-victed was moved to Kerobokan prison on January 7th, 2010. After six years in Kerobokan Prison, Sua-ka was told that he would be joining the 63 prisoneers being moved to Madiun prison in East Java. Suaka is on the list of prisoners who will soon be executed. The Pentagon on Monday showed off the world’s largest unmanned surface vessel, a self-driving 132-foot ship able to travel up to 10,000 nautical miles on its own to hunt for stealthy submarines and underwater mines.

The military’s research arm, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, in conjunction with the Navy will be testing the ship off the San Diego coast over the next two years to observe how it interacts with other vessels and avoids collisions. Un-like smaller, remote-controlled craft launched from ships, the so-called “Sea Hunter” is built to operate on its own.

“It’s not a joy-stick ship,” said DARPA spokesman Jared B. Ad-ams, standing in front of the sleek, futuristic-looking steel-gray vessel docked at a maritime terminal in the heart of San Diego’s shipbuilding district, where TV crews filmed the

robotic craft.“Sea Hunter” relies on radar,

sonar, cameras and a global position-ing system. Unmanned ships will supplement missions to help keep service members out of harm’s way, Adams said.

Besides military leaders, the commercial shipping industry will be watching the ship’s performance during the trial period. Maritime companies from Europe to Asia have been looking into developing fleets of unmanned ships to cut down on operating costs and get through areas plagued by pirates.

During the testing phase, the ship will have human operators as

a safety net. But once it proves to be reliable, it will maneuver itself — able to go out at sea for months at a time. With its twin diesel engines, it could go as far as Guam from San Diego on a mission, developers say. There are no plans at this point to arm it.

“There are a lot of advantages that we’re still trying to learn about,” pro-gram manager Scott Littlefield said.

The idea in the commercial sec-tor has sparked debate over whether it’s possible to make robotic boats safe enough. The International Transport Workers’ Federation, the union representing more than half of the world’s more than 1 million seafarers, has said it does not be-lieve technology will ever be able to replace the ability of humans to foresee and react to the various dangers at sea.

Others have expressed concern about hackers taking control. Mili-tary officials have been working on hacker-proof protections and say it’s possible to make ships cyber-secure.

The “Sea Hunter” was built off the Oregon coast, and it moved on a barge to San Diego’s coastline. The prototype can travel at a speed of up to about 30 mph and is equipped with a variety of sensors and an advanced optical system to detect other ships.

The program to develop the ship cost $120 million, though DARPA officials say the vessels can now be produced for about $20 mil-lion. (ap)

GOODYEAR — An airplane powered only by sunlight has arrived in a Phoenix suburb after completing the latest leg of its global trip.

The Swiss-made Solar Impulse 2 landed shortly before 9 p.m. PDT Monday at Phoenix Goodyear Airport after a 16-hour flight from Mountain View, California, south of San Fran-cisco.

It began the 10th leg of the trek — that’s now over a year old — just after 5 a.m.

Flying without fossil fuel makes for a long trip.

The plane’s solar power is captured by 17,000 cells mounted on its wings, which are larger than those of a 747 jetliner. Some of the solar energy is stored in batteries, allowing the plane to fly at night.

Ideal flight speed is about 28 mph, though that can double during the day when the sun’s rays are strongest. The carbon-fiber aircraft weighs over 5,000 pounds, about as much as a

midsize truck.Maybe slow going isn’t so bad

when you’re flying over some of the most scenic places in the U.S., including the Hawaiian islands and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fran-cisco.

After arriving in the Phoenix area Monday night, pilot Andre Borsch-berg called the trip from California “a beautiful flight.”

And he added: “It was a special flight; not a long flight.”

For several minutes after arriv-ing, Borschberg remained aboard as powerful winds buffeted the aircraft, forcing the ground crew to hold it down with straps.

“Sometimes it is more difficult to handle the airplane on the ground than in flight,” he told reporters later.

Video from cameras aboard the

aircraft as well as on the ground at the Goodyear airport showed the Solar Impulse as it flew through the night sky enroute to its safe touch down southwest of Phoenix.

From his home and studio since 2002, where we met with Made Gara on Monday (Apr 2), he explained that originally he was only using glass to decorate these baskets and that he would get the raw baskets from Bangli. “We are always looking to innovate new products. My son had seen some coral sequins used in Java so we decided to try to see about using them on our sokasi”, he said.

Unfortunately they still need to have the coral brought in from East Java. “We do have coral in Bali , but only very little and we need 200

kilograms per shipment”, explained Gara.

Of this 200 kilograms of raw coral, only about 60 percent is usable and must be sorted before being used to decorate about 50 baskets.

The bits of coral must then be burned to bring out their golden hue, before they can finally be affixed to the woven sokasi baskets.

Made Gara also makes decorated offering pedestals known as ‘du-lang’. For these he tried using fish scales as decoration but these were not very popular so he then tried

using coral sequins. “Even though we only make a small profit, the important thing is that we produce quality products that our customers are happy with”, he said.

As orders continue to come in, they are able to hire housewives from the village to help out with production. Gara prefers to employ housewives as he says they are more deliberate in their work, whether they are using glass or coral on the dulang pedestals. Made Gara added that with 10 employees they will continue to innovate and offer qual-ity products that do not disappoint. “There are a lot of glass dulang producers now but I guarantee high quality even though our prices are a little bit higher than other produc-ers”, he said. People come from all over the area to buy our products. “ Negara is the only market that we have yet to penetrate”, he added.

Made Gara has been asked to have his products featured in this year’s Bali Arts Festival in June. (kmb28)

AMLAPURA - Judicial team of the government of Karan-gasem inspected the Permata Bali Foundation last week. The judicial team wanted to ensure whether the first reprimand has been followed up or not. Ap-parently, the foundation located at Dauh Pangkung hamlet, Se-raya Barat, has not submitted its permit. Chief of the municipal police, Iwan Supartha, threatened to close the foundation on Sun-day (May 1) if the permit is not submitted immediately.

The judicial team came down again to the foundation as the follow-up of the first reprimand. It was led in person by chief of Karangasem municipal police, Iwan Supartha. At that time, the team was received by the owner of Permata Bali Foundation, Agustina Padatu. At that time, Agustina, said Iwan, delivered that the foundation has been submitting the permit. The team includes the integrated licensing office (KPPT) has come down to verify related to the application of the spatial utilization permit (IPR). However, when asked about some other permits, she told they are still in process.

“But, when asked to present the archives of permit submis-sion, she could not. Similarly, the statutes and bylaws of the foundation as having been prom-ised earlier could not be demon-strated with a variety of reasons. It made the judicial team feel to be underestimated,” said Iwan Supartha.

Iwan Supartha requested to prepare the documents. Oth-erwise, the judicial team will close or seal the foundation in accordance with the SOP of the judicial team. In addi-tion, regarding the document of children, including their birth certificate, must be seriously handled to avoid bogus certifi-cate. Currently, the Permata Bali

Foundation is given the second reprimand so as to immediately follow up the direction of the judicial team. Prior to operat-ing, a foundation must have spatial utilization permit (IPR) and various other permits, such as the environmental manage-ment effort and environmental monitoring effort (UKL/UPL), building permit (IMB) and other documents. After complying with these requirements, it can obtain operational permit from the Social Agency. “Before getting the operating permit, the foundation must also have a clear statutes and bylaws,” he said.

The Permata Bali Founda-tion is currently under intense scrutiny of the municipal police. Every day, several officers are stationed at the location. All the activities of the foundation are always monitored by the officers to ensure if the foundation is not abusing the foundation for illegal activities such as child trafficking and other forms of worries.

As is known, the Permata Bali Foundation has been engaged in the activities of financing aban-doned children, orphans and the poor as well as providing schol-arships to nursing system. Since its operation at Dauh Pangkung hamlet, Seraya Barat, in 2012, the foundation previously ad-dressed on Jalan Mekar Jaya II Block D, Mekar Jaya hamlet, Pemogan, has been caring for 12 children, consisting of a two-year old child and a four-year old child, those having studied at Tunas Harapan kindergarten (3 children) and elementary school (7 children). This foundation has four staffs and sits on the land area of 1/2 hectare. All this time, the foundation operates with the funding from international agen-cies and the entire foster children are recruited from outside Bali. (kmb31)

BANGLI - Proliferation of coffee shops lately brings in ben-efits for farmers and roasters. Emergence of many coffee shops automatically causes the demand for coffee to be on the rise. At least it is perceived by a roaster from Belantih village, Kintamani, Komang Sukarsana.

Sukarsana told Bali Post on Fri-

day (Apr. 29), that the number of coffee shops these days continues to increase, especially in big cit-ies. Proliferation of coffee shop is caused by some factors where one of them is that coffee has become a trend and lifestyle among most people. Now, coffee is not only en-joyed by the elderly, but also young people. “The presence of coffee

shops also develops the Kintamani coffee,” he explained.

He said that with the increasing demand for coffee automatically makes the price of coffee also in-crease. He mentioned that in 2012 the price of coffee dropped. But in the following years the price of cof-fee continues to rise. Lastly, in the harvest season last year, his roasted

coffee was able to penetrate the price of IDR 65,000-70,000 per kg. He is also confident that the coffee harvest season arrives this year will come to its peak around June-July and the price remains good.

In the meantime, to maintain the price of coffee and make it rise, Sukarsana admitted that all this time he continues to maintain

the quality of the coffee he sells. To improve the quality of his cof-fee, he does it with innovation in the processing of raw materials. From glass to coral, offerings basket

producers innovate new products

TABANAN - Artisans who want to remain competitive and keep their share of the market need to come up with constant innovations in their products. A 67 year-old artisan from Loda-lang Hamlet, Kukuh Marga Village, Tabanan, named I Made Gara has done just this. Gara produces square shaped offerings baskets known as sokasi, and while other producers have taken to decorating these baskets with bits of glass, Gara has created coral sequins to decorate his baskets. Although he has only been selling these innovate designs for a few weeks, it would appear that consumers are loving them.

SINGAPORE - Singapore has detained eight Bangladeshi men planning to stage terror attacks in their home country as the Islamic State in Bangladesh (ISB), the city state said on Tuesday, the second group of Bangladeshis investigated in the past six months.

The men, aged 26 to 34, were working in Singapore’s construc-tion and marine industries, the gov-ernment said in a statement. At least two more members in the group were in Bangladesh, it added.

“ISB poses a security concern to Singapore because of its support for ISIS and its readiness to resort to the use of violence overseas,” the Ministry of Home Affairs said, referring to Islamic State.

The men were detained in April under Singapore’s Internal Security Act, the government said. It was not immediately clear if or when they would be charged or deported.

Singapore’s Straits Times called it the first detentions under the act involving a foreign workers’ cell.

The government of wealthy, multi-ethnic Singapore, which has not faced any militant attacks in decades, said investigations showed the ISB had identified several possible attack targets in Bangladesh.

Islamist militants in Bangladesh have targeted atheist bloggers, academics, religious minorities and foreign aid workers in a series of killings that date back to February 2015 and have claimed at least 20 lives. A Hindu tailor was hacked to death on Saturday.

The Islamic State and a group affiliated to al Qaeda have claimed responsibility for most of the at-tacks. Bangladeshi police said home-grown militant group are responsible.

In January, Singapore said it

had arrested 27 Bangladeshi con-struction workers who supported Islamist groups including al Qaeda and Islamic State and deported 26 of them.

Fourteen of the 26 have since been jailed in Bangladesh on “terror charges”, Bangladeshi police said, but denied they had any link to the Islamic State or al Qaeda.

The Singapore ministry said the eight detained men had intended to join Islamic State as foreign fight-ers. It provided photographs of the men, a bomb making manual and other documents it said the group had used.

The ministry said the men felt it would be difficult for them to make their way to Syria and focused instead on returning to Bangladesh to overthrow the government by force, and bring it under the Islamic State’s self-proclaimed caliphate, the ministry said. (rtr)

At least 21 people have so far been confirmed dead after the six-storey residential block in Nairobi’s poor Huruma district crumbled on Friday night. Police are questioning the owners after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered them detained.

“The child, who had been buried for about 80 hours, was found in a bucket wrapped in a blanket. She appeared dehydrated, and with no visible physical injuries,” the Kenya Red Cross said in a state-ment.

The fate of her parents was not clear. The girl was being treated in hospital.

The collapse of the building was the latest such disaster in a fast expanding African city that is struggling to build homes fast enough.

Like many other cities in Af-rica, the population of Nairobi has climbed dramatically in recent years. The Kenyan capital had almost 3.5 million people in 2011, about a third bigger than a decade earlier, according to U.N. figures.

Governments have struggled to provide basic infrastructure and bureaucratic processes to ensure planning rules are met.

Many Kenyans who come to the city in search of work end up in one of several slums, such as Kibera, made up of makeshift homes of wood and corrugated iron sheets.

Others live in slightly better off but still poor districts, like Huru-ma, where concrete buildings have risen rapidly amid potholed roads and ropey power supplies. Heavy rains have caused other collapses in Nairobi but without such high death tolls.

The Interior Ministry said the Huruma building had been ear-marked for demolition as it was built close to a river, but the order had not been carried out by local officials. It urged developers to adhere to safety standards.

After visiting the site on Sat-urday, Kenya’s president ordered other buildings to be surveyed to ensure they were safe.

Rescue workers had said on Monday that the chances of find-

ing more survivors was unlikely. About 136 people have already been saved from the wreck.

Dozens of other people are still listed as missing, Red Cross spokeswoman Arnolda Shiundu said, adding it was not clear how many of those had escaped but had not yet been traced.

Similar disasters have afflicted other African conurbations. In 2014, a church in Lagos, one of Africa’s biggest cities, collapsed killing 115 people. A Nigerian coroner last year blamed poor construction.

Poor and illegal construction has also often been blamed for the crumbling of apartment blocks in Egypt, where almost all Egyptians are crammed into the crowded Nile Valley and buildings are often extended with extra floors piled on top. (rtr)

TABANAN - Tabanan plans to develop tourism in every one of its 133 villages, though for the time being there are only 18 tourism villages in this district.

In order to get recommendations

and learn about tourism villages, members of Tabanan’s district government paid a visit to Sade, Central Lombok, NTB on Tuesday (Apr 2).

Desa Wisata Sade Tourism Vil-

lage is inhabited by the native Lombok tribe known as the Sasak and has been running as a tour-ism village for over 30 years and is fully managed by the villagers themselves.

According to local a local guide named Awan, before Sade became a tourism village, the Sasak’s sole means of earning a living was by selling firewood. “The people of Sade Village are farmers and har-vest their dry field rice once a year”, he explained.

There economic welfare started to improve after they became a tourism village as they were able to sell crafts, such as jewelery, weav-ings, and the like directly from their homes. Visitors to this traditional village were then able to buy crafts directly form the producers. “The profits made by the villagers were used to fulfill their daily needs’ added Awan.

Apart form the traditional archi-tecture that is still practiced in this village, another tradition that is still practiced is that of ‘kidnapping’ brides to be. “If fact proposing to a bride is considered as an insult to her parents”, said Awan.

He went on to say that the residents of Sade Village do not contribute any of their earning to the village nor to the government. However the government still fully supports this traditional village including help by helping them

make repairs to damaged traditional houses. “It is forbidden to use clay tiles for roofing here – they must be made of grass (alang-alang) and the government helps them repair damaged roofs” he said.

Head of Tabanan’s Bureau of Tourism and Culture, Wayan Ad-nyana said that one of the things that Tabanan can learn from Sade tourism Village, is about the im-portance of the local government’s commitment to making local people aware about the potential that there village has as a tourist destination. “The potential of Sade Village is fully taken advantage of and managed by the villagers”, he said.

Obviously villages in Tabanan do not have the same attributes as Sade Village does, but each village has its own unique apsects that can potentially be developed and this is what the government wants to encourage the villagers to do. “How can the government encourage vil-lages to develop their potential? Tabanan has been conducting studies with the help of academics about how to best develop tourism villages in Tabanan”, explained Adnyana. (kmb24)

More sadly, the terminal that should be intended as loading and unloading of interprovincial passengers is even lacking of activities. So far, the Ubung terminal belonging to type B stays to become the main choice of loading and unloading of interprovincial pas-sengers.

The government of Badung in this case the Head of the Transportation and Infocom Agency, Wayan Weda Dharmaja, when asked for his confirma-tion recently claimed to only wait for the policy of central government. “We are waiting for the instructions from central government,” he said simply.

This former Abiansemal subdistrict head said that the administrative com-pleteness requested by central govern-ment related to the plan has been met. It includes the archives on the personnel, finance, infrastructure and documents (P3D). “Well, we have prepared ev-erything. Now, it depends on central government,” he said.

Nevertheless, Weda Dharmaja admit-ted that the regent of Badung directly made coordination with central govern-ment, so that the proposed acquisition plan of Mengwi terminal can be real-ized.

Chief of the Badung Land Transporta-

tion Organization (Organda), K Ngurah Sutharma, previously acknowledged the dualistic function of the terminal, where the Ubung and Mengwi termi-nal can provide the opportunities for interprovincial transportation (AKAP) to cheat. “Such behavior must be dealt with firmly, so as not to harm the public transport operating at Mengwi terminal,” he said.

Under this condition, he said, it requires a decisive action of the govern-ment. “It means there are now two feet, one standing at Ubung and another at Mengwi. If the government takes firm action there will be no problems. If the reality is like the current one, the interprovincial transportation still passes to Ubung, dropping off passengers on the street will obviously harm us,” he complained.

With the takeover of Mengwi termi-nal by central government, it is expected the problem faced today can be resolved. “Hopefully, when Mengwi terminal is taken over by central government, it will be getting better. Moreover, the entry of TransSarbagita into the terminal should be given the attention so as they can equally survive,” he hoped while adding that a total of 70 units of public transport depend on Mengwi terminal. by central government is increasingly uncertain. Surely, in accordance with the Law No.23/2014 on local government, this type A terminal located at Mengwitani village is no longer under the authority of the government of Badung. However, until now the plan remains unclear.

Bank of America Corp. polled 1,000 business owners and found that their expectations for economic growth fell by nearly half from a survey taken last fall. Just under 30 percent expect the national economy to improve over the next year, down from 56 percent with that view in a survey last fall.

Many owners said the election is a reason why they’re less optimistic. Fifty-five percent said the election is affecting their outlook. Last fall, just over a third cited the election as a factor. The latest survey was taken between mid-March and mid-April, as the primary election campaign was reaching its mid-way point.

The drop in optimism was also

reflected in owners’ expectations for their revenue. Just over half forecast that their revenue would rise in the next 12 months. That’s down from nearly three-quarters who said last fall they expected their revenue to increase.

The Bank of America survey was in line with one released Monday by Capital One. Forty-one percent of the 401 businesses surveyed by Capital One described current business condi-tions as excellent or good, but that was down from 50 percent last year.

With optimism sagging, own-ers are scaling back hiring plans. Twenty-two percent said they’ll bring on new staffers over the next year, down from two-thirds in the

fall. The number of owners who cited the economy as a reason for not hiring rose to 28 percent from 20 percent. But 70 percent said they just don’t need to hire â?? their cur-rent staffs can handle the work.

Owners may be just cautious, rather than pessimistic, said Bank of America Small Business Executive Robb Hilson, who cited the election as a key reason why owners are reluctant to hire. “They’re not saying they’re not hiring. They’re saying, let’s see how this plays out,” he said.

The number of owners interested in loans has also fallen. Fourteen percent said they’d applied for a loan in the last two years, down from 44 percent. Approval rates for those who did apply fell, to 89 percent from 97 percent. And just 9 percent said they planned to apply for a loan this year, down from the 35 percent last fall.(ap)

FRANKFURT — Luxury automaker BMW says net profit rose 8.2 percent in the first quarter thanks to strong sales in Europe and Asia, but the company gave a restrained outlook for the rest of the year.

Profit rose to 1.64 billion euros ($1.88 billion) from 1.52 billion euros a year earlier. The figure, however, was short of the consensus estimate for 1.68 billion euros as compiled by financial information provider FactSet and BMW was cautious about the months to come.

In its quarterly report Tuesday, it said earnings would “increase slightly” and cautioned that the company faced rising personnel costs and high levels of investment in new projects and technology. Long-term investment is crucial to coming up with top-selling vehicles, but can divert money from earnings in the shorter run.

It predicted it would keep its profit margins — one of the key earn-ings figures watched by investors — in its target range of 8-10 percent. The first quarter figure came in at 9.4 percent, off slightly from 9.5 percent a year earlier. BMW shares fell 3 percent to 78.65 euros in morning trading in Europe.

The Munich-based company said it saw record sales for a first quarter. Numbers were boosted by a jump of 10.5 percent in China and 9.5 percent in the recovering European economy. U.S. sales were off 10.8 percent. Overall, it sold 557,605 vehicles worldwide under its three brands, which also include Mini and Rolls-Royce, an increase of 5.9 percent.

BMW reported strong demand for its X family of sport-utility vehicles. Sales here rose 24 percent, with a sharp jump of almost two-thirds for the smallest X1 vehicle. The next largest, the X3, sold 27 percent more.

Global sales revenue fell 0.3 percent to 20.85 billion euros, pushed down by shifts in currency exchange rates.(ap)

CANBERRA — Australia’s government says it plans to reduce its budget deficit by more than half in three years while maintaining momentum in a sluggish economy

with personal and business tax cuts.

Treasurer Scott Morrison re-vealed on Tuesday that the deficit for the current fiscal year that

ends on June 30 is expected reach 39.9 billion Australian dollars ($30.7 billion). That is AU$4.8 billion worse than was forecast a year ago as the Australian

economy has been buffeted by China’s slowing demand for iron ore and coal.

In its latest economic blueprint, the government plans to reduce

Australia’s deficit to AU$37.1 billion next year and to AU$15.4 billion by 2018-19. Net debt would peak at a 19.2 percent of GDP in 2017-18.(ap)

Hanafi Rais, vice chairman of the parliamentary committee debating the current draft of the law, said Tuesday that permitting lengthy detention in undisclosed prisons would give security forces powers that could be easily abused.

Speaking at a panel on extremism, Rais said parliament should pass a law that strengthens the capacity of police to prevent attacks without giving the state excessive power that

could foster support for radicals. He sa id lawmakers were

“stunned” by the death of suspected militant Siyono in police custody earlier this year, which revealed a lack of professionalism in Indone-sia’s elite counter-terrorism squad.

Efforts to strengthen laws against militant activity gathered momen-tum after a suicide bombing in the Indonesian capital in January which killed eight people, including four

attackers who claimed allegiance to the Islamic State group.

It was the first major attack by extremists in the world’s most populous Muslim nation in six years and raised questions about whether the country was facing a new threat despite the sustained crackdown that decimated the Jemaah Islami-yah network responsible for the 2002 Bali bombings.

Rais said the new law could be ready for parliament to vote on in October. He predicted there would be a “tough” debate that could re-sult in a reduction to the six-month detention provision.(ap)

JAKARTA - The government has issued Presidential Regulation No. 18 of 2016 on waste-based power plants to accelerate the plan to process waste into energy, according to an Energy and Mineral Resources Ministrys official. “Remove trash from cities, and utilize it to generate electricity as a bonus,” the ministrys Director General for New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Rida Mulyana, stated here on Tuesday.

Mulyana made the remark during a function to launch a handbook on the familiarization of the regulation on utilizing waste to produce energy. Mulyana emphasized that globally, the waste problem was linked to social issues, health, and the environment, for instance, related to garbage, which was the source of pollutants.

So far, he noted that various parties had spent a significant amount of time to manage waste, and the waste problem was also brought into the political sphere.

Further, Mulyana added that the government was committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and delivering three programs: the reform of subsidy, accelerated utilization of new and renewable energy, and the acceleration of the “waste-to-energy” program.

“The government is seriously pushing this program, and the regulation is complete. The coordinating ministry has issued the derivative regulation,” he remarked. Mulyana pointed out that as many as seven cities --- Jakarta, Bandung, Tangerang, Semarang, Surakarta, Surabaya, and Makassar --- had been chosen for the implementation of the pilot project.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) was earlier seeking more innovative policies to address energy issues, espe-cially due to the presence of several sources of renewable energy in Indonesia.

“Access to energy is still limited, and electricity (production) is still minimal; hence, innovations are needed to solve our energy problems,” Kadin Vice Chairman for State Enterprises Adi Satria Sulisto affirmed.

Sulisto explained that the issue arose due to the limited sup-ply of energy amid increasing community needs, and it should be the primary concern of all circles to create new innovations from alternative energy sources in Indonesia. According to Sulisto, the various alternative sources of energy in the country are hydropower, biogas, wind, and geothermal, among others.(ant)

SURABAYA - Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini has conferred 40 awards on senior high school and vo-cational school principals, early child-hood education program (PAUD) teachers and students who read the most books, for their achievements.

“I should like to express my gratitude to teachers for having done their best for our children,” she said at a function marking the National Education Day and the 20th Regional Autonomy Day here

on Monday.Winners of library contests at

elementary, junior and senior high school levels, winners of story- tell-ing contest and winners of sports week at elementary school level were also among those who re-ceived the awards.

She said the teachers had dedicated themselves to the education of Indo-nesian children and, therefore, they deserved a token of appreciation.

The mayor further reminded

students in Surabaya of the need to prepare themselves mentally for competition in the era of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

It is important for students in the city not to easily give up in the face of the competition at the global level, she said.

“You must not easily start feeling as if you are helpless. You must win the competition. You must be win-ners, not only at local but also at global levels,” she said.(ant)

With two games left, Leicester are seven points ahead of Totten-ham and Saturday’s home match against Everton will now become a glorious celebration for a club who were in the third tier of English soccer just seven years ago.

Tottenham had been hoping to claim a first English league title since 1961, when they won the double by beating Leicester in the FA Cup final, but fell short in agonising circumstances at Stamford Bridge where they have not won in 26 years.

“Congratulations to Leicester City and to Claudio Ranieri. A fantastic season,” Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said.

“It’s a massive, amazing sea-son for Leicester, Claudio the players and the fans. They de-serve it.”

Unfashionable Leicester, 5,000-1 outsiders at the start of the season, have become English champions for the first time and are the first club to win a maiden English title since Nottingham Forest in 1977-78, having left the likes of Manchester City and United, Chelsea and Arsenal in their wake. Cruz has spent the past week camped out in Indiana, securing the support of the state’s governor and announcing retired technology ex-ecutive Carly Fiorina as his running mate. Yet his aides were pessimistic heading into Tuesday’s voting and were prepared for Cruz to fall short, though the senator vowed to stay in the race, regardless of the results.

“I am in for the distance, as long as we have a viable path to victory,” Cruz told reporters on Monday dur-ing a campaign stop.

Trump devoted more time to campaigning in Indiana than he has to most other states, underscoring his eagerness to put his Republican rival away and shift his attention toward Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. While Trump cannot clinch the nomination with a big win in In-diana, his path would get easier and

he would have more room for error in the campaign’s final contests.

“Indiana is very important, be-cause if I win that’s the end of it. It would be over,” Trump said during a lunch stop Monday in Indianapolis.

Republican leaders spent months dismissing Trump as little more than an entertainer who would fade once voting started. But Republican primary voters have stuck with the billionaire businessman, handing him victories in every region of the country, including a string of six straight wins on the East Coast.

Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders also faced off in Indiana’s Democratic primary on Tuesday, though the stakes were lower than in the Republican race. Clinton holds a commanding lead over Sand-ers — she’s secured 91 percent of the delegates she needs to win the

nomination. That means she can still win the nomination even if she loses every remaining contest.

Sanders has conceded that he fac-es a difficult path to overtake Clin-ton, one that hinges on convincing superdelegates to back him over the former secretary of state. Superdel-egates are Democratic Party insiders who can support the candidate of their choice, regardless of how their states vote. And they favor Clinton by a nearly 18-1 margin.

Neither Clinton nor Sanders planned to spend Tuesday in Indi-ana. Sanders was making stops in Kentucky, which holds a primary in mid-May, while Clinton moved on to Ohio, a key general election battleground.

Clinton’s team has started deploy-ing staff to states that will be crucial in November and is also raising money for the fall campaign. Even as Trump hires more staff to round out his slim team, he already lags far behind Clinton in general election preparations. (ap)

SYDNEY - Australia blamed refugee advocates on Tuesday for “encouraging” asylum seekers held in remote camps towards acts of self-harm after a woman set herself on fire, while the United Nations renewed its criticism of Australia’s harsh immigration policy.

Australian officials said an unidentified 21-year-old Somali woman was in a critical condition after she set herself alight at an Aus-tralian detention camp on the tiny South Pacific island of Nauru on Monday, the second such incident in a week.

A 23-year-old Iranian man also set himself on fire last week in pro-test against his treatment on Nauru and later died. The Somali woman has been transferred to Australia for treatment, officials said.

Under Australia’s hardline im-migration policy, asylum seekers intercepted trying to reach Australia after paying people smugglers are sent for processing to camps on Nauru, which holds about 500 peo-ple, and on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. They are told they will never be settled in Australia.

The Papua New Guinea gov-ernment ordered the Manus Island camp, which holds about 850 people, closed last week after its Supreme Court ruled the facility unlawful. The harsh conditions and reports of systemic child abuse at the camps have drawn wide criti-cism inside and outside Australia and have become a major headache for Australian Prime Minister Mal-

colm Turnbull during campaigning for likely July elections.

Australia however has vowed there will be no change to the policy, which has been pursued by succes-sive governments.

On Tuesday, Immigration Min-ister Peter Dutton acknowledged there had been a rise in cases of self-harm in the camps but accused refugee advocates of giving the asy-lum seekers false hope they would one day be settled in Australia.

Her said some advocates were “encouraging some of these people to behave in a certain way”.

“The recent behaviours in Nauru are not protests against living condi-tions. They aren’t protests against health care, they aren’t protests against the lack of financial sup-port,” Dutton told a news confer-ence in Canberra.

However, the peak U.N. body for refugees said such incidents in the camps, which hold asylum seek-ers fleeing violence in the Middle East, Afghanistan and South Asia, were a result of Australia’s tough offshore detention polices.

“These people have already been through a great deal, many have fled war and persecution, some have already suffered trauma,” the office of the United Nations High Com-missioner for Refugees in Australia said in a statement.

“The consensus among medical experts is that conditions of deten-tion and offshore processing do immense damage to physical and mental health,” it said. (rtr)

Sochi - Daniil Kvyat’s future with Red Bull was cast into doubt on Monday when the team said they would summon him for talks on his role in the multiple-collision that wrecked their ambitions in Sunday’s Russian Grand Prix.

The Russian racer rammed into the Ferrari of former Red Bull hero, four-time world champion German Sebastian Vettel, twice on the opening lap of an eventful race won by Nico Rosberg of Mercedes.

Vettel and two other drivers were forced to retire on the opening lap and both Kvyat and his Red Bull team-mate Australian Daniel Ricciardo’s cars suf-fered severe damage.

They continued, but finished out of the points adrift of victorious German Nico Rosberg who won ahead of his Mercedes team-mate defending champion Briton Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg now leads Hamilton by 43 points in the title race.

It was Rosberg’s fourth straight win this season and seventh in succession, including three last year, and was a disas-trous day for the chasing pack including

the Ferrari and Red Bull teams.Red Bull boss Christian Horner apolo-

gised to Vettel and Ferrari for Kvyat’s im-petuous driving in Turns Two and Three and the Russian afterwards apologised to Vettel and ‘everyone involved’ for his reckless moves.

After the race, Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Austrian Helmut Marko, the hard-headed consultant who oversees the team for Red Bull owner Dieter Mateschitz, made clear his displeasure.

“Let’s put it this way,” he said. “Kvyat was over-motivated. Braking too late once and hitting another car would be acceptable in front of his home crowd, but this doesn’t apply for the second crash.

“It’s a pity because he not only ruined Vettel’s race -- and Ricciardo’s race -- but also his own race. He had to do an extra stop. It was a day of disaster for Red Bull.” (afp)

LAS VEGAS - Floyd Mayweather Jr is happily retired but the 39-year-old unbeaten American hinted in an interview on Satur-day that a return to the ring could not be completely ruled out.

Mayweather quit boxing in September after ac-cumulating a 49-0 record during a 19-year career that produced world titles in five weight divisions and earnings in excess of $800 million.

The American says he is happy with life outside the ring but acknowledged he was in talks with tele-vision networks over a possible comeback fight.

“Everyone is asking me ‘is Floyd Mayweather coming back?’” he said in an interview with Showtime.

“Right now, I’m happy being on this side but I’ve been talking with CBS and Showtime and you just never know. But right now, I’m just happy on this side,” added Mayweather, who ended his career in the welterweight division.

“As of right now, some crazy numbers have been thrown my way -- upwards, of course, of nine figures.

“But I’m truly blessed beyond belief and I re-ally don’t know what we’re going to do. But right now, I’m really happy being on this side helping our fighters.”

Mayweather beat Manny Pacquiao, who retired last month, in a unanimous decision last year before defeating Andre Berto in September in his last bout.

Many want him to take on undefeated Kazakh middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin but Mayweather was quick to rule out the possibility of agreeing to that match-up.

“How can Floyd Mayweather fight at 160 (pounds) when I can never even make 154?” he said. (rtr)

Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, son of club chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprab-ha, attended Monday’s game between Chelsea and Tottenham which ended in a draw, meaning Leicester cannot be overtaken for the title. Aiyawatt, speak-ing on Thai television, said “we are not selling anyone.”

“We are not a team who produces players to be developed later by other teams.” Aiyawatt said. “All players want to stay and keep on fighting together to see how far they can go. So selling play-ers is not on our agenda.”

Star Foxes players such as midfield-ers Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante, striker Jamie Vardy and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel are expected to at-

tract big-money offers from rival clubs, but the revenue from competing in the Champions League next season will aid Leicester’s bid to retain them.

Leicester was a 5000-1 outsider at the start of the English top-flight competi-tion, and Aiyawatt said when his father Vichai — head of duty free company King Power — invested in the club six years ago, winning the title “was not what we dared to dream.”

“He was already proud of being the owner of an English Premier League team. Now he has owned an English Premier League Champion team, he can’t be prouder,” Aiyawatt said of his father. “I have to say on his behalf that he has managed the club with his heart

and he just hopes to gain a reputation for the country.”

Aiyawatt said that when the trophy is presented to Leicester’s squad at this weekend’s home game, it will be deco-rated with ribbons of blue and yellow; blue as Leicester’s color, and yellow as the color of Thailand’s royal house.

He said there are plans to bring the Leicester City team out to Thailand for a visit during the offseason, even though a similar visit last year resulted in some youth team players involved in a scandal which contributed to the firing of manager Nigel Pearson.

“They are coming to Thailand very, very soon,” Aiyawatt said. “This is unbelievable. Thai people should be given a lot of credit as all p l a y - ers acknowledge h o w much support t h e y h a v e b e e n

given.”(ap)

ROME - Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain and ever-

green AS Roma forward Fran-cesco Totti lit up Serie A on Monday as the two teams won in contrasting fashion to boost their bids for an automatic Champions League spot.

Higuain took his league tally to 32 goals with a double in Na-

poli’s 2-1 home win over Atalanta and Totti cracked in a spectacular free kick which helped Roma to a 3-2 win at Genoa.

The results left Napoli in second position on 76 points from 36 games, two more than Roma with two games remaining.

Juventus secured their fifth successive Italian title last month, leaving their rivals to battle it out for the other automatic group stage berth in Europe’s premier

club competition. The top two qualify au-

tomatically for the money-spinning group stage while the third-placed team enter a playoff round.

The evening began with 39-year old Totti rolling back the years as he came on in the second half with Roma trailing 2-1 after Mohamed Salah had given them an early lead.

Having had their advan-tage wiped out by the club’s former midfielder Panagiotis Tachtsidis and Leonardo Pavo-letti, Roma forced the final twist thanks to a moment of magic from their inspirational stalwart.

Totti scored his fourth goal in as many games as a sub-stitute when he unleashed a ferocious shot from 25 metres

which spun away into the top left corner.

He also forced a superb save from Eugenio Lamanna with another free kick but the keeper could do nothing about Stephan El Shaarawy’s simple finish in the 87th minute after Edin Dzeko squared the ball to the striker.

Needing a win to reclaim second place, Napoli made heavy weather of their victory over 13th-placed Atalanta.

Higuain fired them into a 14th-minute lead and doubled the advantage with a superb header in the 77th. The home side missed a hatful of chanc-es as Atalanta keeper Marco Sportiello pulled of a string of good saves before a Raul Albiol own goal set up a tense finish. (rtr)

MADRID - Real Madrid are hoping the fit-again Cristiano Ronaldo can lead them into the Champions League final although strike partner Karim Benzema remains a doubt for Wednesday’s return match with Manchester City.

Ronaldo completed a full train-ing session on Monday for the first time since injuring his hamstring against Villarreal on April 20 and is expected to start the semi-final second leg against City who were held to a 0-0 home draw in the first game. Ben-zema, who is also nursing a hamstring problem, could only do running exercises on Monday.

The 10-times European champions scraped a 1-0 win at Real Sociedad in La Liga on Satur-day without their two top scorers.

Portugal marksman Ronaldo took no part in last week’s tie in Manchester while France forward Benzema went off at halftime. Although Real had the better chances they were noticeably lightweight up front in the second period. The club’s all-time lead-ing scorer Ronaldo has 47 goals in all competitions this season.

His hat-trick in the quarter-final second leg against VfL Wolfsburg over-turned a two-goal deficit from the first match, averting an embarrassing exit for Zinedine Zidane’s side.

City coach Manuel Pellegrini made eight changes to his team against South-ampton on Sunday, in preparation for the trip to Madrid, but the plan backfired as they lost 4-2.

The Chilean was unapologetic about resting some of his players as his side look to reach a first Champions League final. “I would do exactly the same again because we have an important game on Wednesday,” said Pellegrini.

Real are eyeing their 14th final appearance, 60 years after defeating Stade de Reims 4-3 to win the inaugural competition.

The Madrid heavyweights have progressed in seven out of eight European ties after being held to a goalless draw in the first leg, losing only to Spartak Moscow in the 1991 European Cup quarter-finals.

Real are also unbeaten in their last four Champions League matches at the Bernabeu against English opposi-tion.

“Home advantage will help. The fans have to support us, we’re counting on them and I’m sure they won’t let us down,” said midfield anchorman Casemiro.

“When they get behind us they help a lot. Manchester City have to feel that the Bernabeu is strong.”(rtr)

FIFA President Gianni Infantino attends a news conference in Bangkok, Thailand April 28, 2016.

BUDAPEST - FIFA President Gianni Infantino suggested that European football associations can donate the money they receive from soccer’s governing body to other parts of the world if they do not need it.

Infantino, elected in February to lead the organisation out of the worst crisis in its history, has promised that FIFA will donate $5 mill ion to each of i ts 209 member associations during every four-year period.

It will also donate $40 million to each of the six continen-tal confederations over the same pe-riod.

But he sug-gested that this was a relatively i n s i g n i f i c a n t amount to some European asso-ciations and

suggested it could be better em-ployed elsewhere.

“The funds have been increased to this famous $5 million over four years, but for you in UEFA, this is not a big amount compared to what you generate,” he told UEFA’s annual Congress.

“If you in Europe don’t need all this money from FIFA, give it to other associations around the

world, invest it in projects around the world and

we can really create a difference for a

new FIFA, a unit-ed FIFA, a FIFA of solidarity,” he said. “You in Europe can show togeth-er that you can make a difference in the world.”

(rtr)

(rtr)

If the raw material is previously done in wet process, it is now done with other processes such as with honey and natural processes to meet the taste of consumers. (kmb40)

(kmb42)

The result provoked an outpour-ing of celebration in the provincial English city and as far away as Thailand and Japan, while Leices-ter’s players had watched nervously on television along with Foxes fans packed into local bars 160km away.

Goals from Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Son Heung-min had looked like extending the title race to the penultimate week of

what has been an unforgettable season.

But Gary Cahill gave Chelsea a lifeline before the hour and Eden Hazard, whose goals helped the Blues win the title last year, curled in a superb 83rd-minute equaliser to deflate Spurs and confirm Le-icester as champions for the first time.

As tempers flared at the end of a red-hot London derby at Stam-

ford Bridge, television pictures cut away to Leicester’s players celebrating in the living room of their striker Jamie Vardy, whose 22 goals have under-pinned his side’s challenge.

Elsewhere in Leicester, the city’s biggest ever party began in earnest, with hundreds of fans gathering outside the stadium and thousands more celebrating in pubs and bars.

Leicester’s unlikely journey from no-hopers to English cham-pions has captivated sports fans worldwide, nowhere more so than in Thailand, home of the club’s owners King Power.

Claudio Ranieri, the former Chelsea manager who has master-minded Leicester’s rise since taking over at the start of the season, was celebrating the first major league title of his long managerial career.

PROUD RANIERI“I’m so proud,” the Italian, who

was favourite in August to become the first manager to be sacked, said. “I never expected this when I ar-rived. I’m a pragmatic man, I just wanted to win match after match and help my players to improve week after week. Never did I think too much about where it would

take us.”Defender Wes Morgan, who

scored a vital equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Manchester United on Sunday, said: “Saturday can’t come quickly enough. I can’t wait to get my hands on the trophy.”

(ap)

Light-up gowns and gladiators: Met Gala fashion was fierce

NEW YORK — They came as robots and gladiators, light-up princesses and high-haired goddesses shimmering in green, copper and silver.

Putu Suaka, the 54 years old man, who was sentenced to death in 2008 for murdering a Karangasem police officer, is now awaiting execution.

Since he was sentenced, he has spent two years in a Karangasem

prison where he was in a special high security cell before being moved.

“At the time, we were concerned that Suaka may get violent. So it was decided that he would be moved into a special cell where he was kept 24 hours a day”, said Educator Gede Kubayaan along with head of the Karangasem prison, Kusbiyan-toro, from the prison last Monday (Apr. 2).
