NEW YORK - The Pulitzer Prizes, established in 1917 with a bequest from trail-blazing pub-lisher Joseph Pulitzer, are marking their 100th year on Monday with the announcement of the winners of what are regarded as the most prestigious awards in American journalism.

The Pulitzers recognize excel-lence in categories that range from breaking news reporting to public

service articles to feature photog-raphy. In addition to the journalism awards, there are prizes in fiction, history, drama, music and other literary forms.

All told, there are 21 prizes in play every year. Winners are selected by an independent board after judges make nominations from a total of 2,400 entries across the range of categories. The board has the option of naming no winner in

any category. The announcement takes place at

3 p.m. ET (1900 GMT) on Monday at New Yorks Columbia Univer-sity, which founded its School of Journalism with an endowment from Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of the New York World and other U.S. newspapers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His will pro-vided funding for the prizes in the early years and named Columbia to

administer them.Over the years, the New York

Times has taken more awards than any other news organization, receiving 117 Pulitzer Prizes and citations, according to the newspa-pers website.

Last year the paper won three Pulitzers, including an international reporting prize for its coverage of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

    Last years Pulitzer for Public

Service went to Charleston, South Carolinas Post and Courier for its series on domestic violence.

In the inaugural awards in 1917, Herbert Bayard Swope of the New York World was the prize winner in reporting for a series of articles en-titled Inside the German Empire, while the New York Tribune won the award for editorial writing on its piece on the first anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania. Depp accompanied his wife, Amber Heard, for the hearing at a packed courthouse in the Southport magistrates court, near where he had been shooting a Pirates of the Caribbean sequel when the scandal erupted last year.

Bringing an end to what the Aus-tralian media had gleefully dubbed the war on terrier, a magistrate filed no conviction for Heard but issued a formal order to stay out of trouble for a month or face a A$1,000 ($767) fine.

Heard, 29, had faced charges of illegally importing animals after au-thorities accused the couple of fly-ing their Yorkshire Terriers, Pistol and Boo, into the country without going through proper quarantine

procedures. But on Monday, the court learned

that state prosecutors agreed to drop those charges when Heard pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of lying on an incoming passenger form when entering the country to visit Depp on set last year.

For the A-list couple, the result is a reassuringly un-Hollywood end-ing to their brush with Australias notoriously tough quarantine laws.

The original charges against Heard carried a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a fine of A$10,000. The ruling also drew a line under the unlikely diplomatic tangle between the celebrity pair and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, who in his capacity as farm

minister threatened to have the dogs put down if Depp and Heard did not remove them.

Depp made no comments before entering the courthouse other than brief pleasantries to waiting media. In court, Heards lawyers played a video apology in which the expres-sionless couple praised Australias biosecurity rules and Depp noted that if you disrespect Australian law, they will tell you firmly.

Heard added, in the video, that Australia was a wonderful is-land and she was truly sorry that Pistol and Boo were not declared because protecting Australia is important.

Heards lawyer, Jeremy Kirk, told the court his client was jet-lagged and worried about a hand injury Depp received on set, and believed all appropriate arrange-ments in relation to the dogs had been made. (rtr)

LOS ANGELES - The Jungle Book dominated the weekend box office, grossing a massive $103.6 million, and extending the Walt Disney Companys success in making live action versions of its classic animated features.

That ranks as the second biggest April opening in history, behind only Furious 7s $147.2 million launch. With Cinderella, Alice in Wonder-land, Maleficent, and now The Jungle Book, this strategy of revital-izing fairy tales has become a virtual brand onto itself. One that nearly rivals Disneys Marvel, Pixar, and LucasFilm projects. The studio will continue to mine its library; Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson hits theaters on March 17, 2017, and new versions of Cruella De Ville and Peter Pan are in the works.

Critics loved The Jungle Book handing it a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Word-of-mouth for the film also looks strong. The picture received an A CinemaScore, which could set it up for a healthy run in the days and weeks ahead. Families made up 49% if the opening weekend audience. The film performed well in Imax, earning $10.4 million, and 43% of its domestic opening weekend gross came on 3D screens.

Jon Favreau (Iron Man) directed the $175 million, which used digital wizardry to conjure up Rudyard Kiplings jungle setting. Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, and Scarlett Johansson head up the vocal cast with Neel Sethi making his feature film debut as Mowgli, the feral child at the heart of the story.

Despite the shadow cast by The Jungle Book, New Line and MGM scored with Barbershop: The Next Cut. The third film in the Barbershop series racked up a sterling $20.2 million from 2,661 locations. Women com-prised 54% of ticket buyers, and 66% of consumers were over the age of 25. The weekends other new entry, Lionsgates action thriller Criminal, debuted to $5.8 million from 2,683 locations for a sixth place finish. The story of a convict who is implanted with the memories of a dead CIA agent in order to finish a mission stars Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones, and Gary Oldman. It cost just north of $30 million to produce.

Last weekends champion, the Melissa McCarthy comedy The Boss, dropped 57%, taking third place with $10.2 million. The story of a business icon whose career is derailed by insider trading has earned $10.2 million in two weeks of release. (rtr)

SEMARAPURA If well managed the same garbag that has become so problematic can instead increase peoples income. The People of Paksebali Village are starting to experience this first hand after 49 year old lo-cal resident Ketut Budiartawan opened a Waste Bank in Paskebali. Since the waste bank was first established, Budiartawan has paid out some IDR 16 million the his neighbours in exchange for their garbage.

So far, 300 households are members of the newly established waste bank that is collecting more and more garbage every month. Bidiartwawan revealed that in the first month that he opened his waste bank, he paid out some IDR 2.5 million in exchange for peoples garbage, but just six months later he is paying out some IDR 7 million. The increase in the amount of garbage that his waste bank has been receiving, he said, is very much related to an increase in public awareness about the importance of separating garbage.

Budiartawan explained Paskebaliresidents who become mem-bers of the waste bank are given a savings book where the amount of money they have earned from their garbage is recorded. Most of the waste deposited at the waste bank consists of plastic bottles, plastic buckets, pipes and other recyclable waste. Previously plas-tic waste was a major problem as it could not be recycled. Now we buy it from people, he said.

In addition to receiving plastic from their fellow villagers, Budiartawan with his wife, Rani Krisna Dewi, also educates the public about how to sort garbage properly. The waste bank also incentivizes people to sort their garbage by offering just IDR 1,000 per kilogram of unsorted garbage compared to the IDR 3,000 per kilogram that they pay for sorted and clean plastic.

To encourage the role of the local communities in managing their waste, this father of four children also provides a garbage pickup service to peoples homes. No matter how much garbage people want to rid themselves of, the waste bank will come and pick it up as further incentive to people. We have overwhelmed with requests and we will pick up any amount even if it is ust a coconut shell, said Budiartawan.

The limited amount of space (3x4 meters) of the waste bank, not all of the village waste can be accommodated so Budiartawan sells his plastic to collectors twice a week. Apart from the lack of space, the other major obstacle that this new junk bank faces, is their lack of vehicles needed to transport the waste to collectors. We have to wait for the collectors to come to before we can go pick up any more garbage from our clients, he concluded. (dwa)

ROME - A 40 meter long photovoltaic computer which provides clean water, while gen-erating electricity to recharge ex-ternal devices, has been designed by an Italian company for use in the developing world. Watly, set up by entrepreneur Marco At-tisani, has started an Indiegogo campaign to fund the third ver-sion of its solar technology. What you are looking at is a big machine, its an infrastructural machine. Its 40 meters long, 15 meters wide, and 15 tonnes, At-tisani told Reuters. Primarily its a computer, a big computer that deals with things that computers do normally. They calculate, they broadcast, they collect, they send them to the cloud, they interact with humans. The Watly 3.0 thermodynamic computer uses solar energy to sanitize more than 5,000 liters of water a day, as well as generating electricity and connectivity. The machine combines photovoltaic and ther-mal solar technologies. Solar heat collected by vacuum-tubes is used to vaporize and sanitize water fed into the machine. It can clean con-taminated water, including ocean water, within two hours. The photovoltaic panels located on the roof generate off-grid electricity to power the internal electron-ics of the machine, and also for recharging external devices such as mobiles phones and portable computers. Watly purifies water from any source of contamina-tion - chemical, bacteriological, or physical - without the need of filterings, said Attisani. It also generates electricity because it combines also photovoltaic tech-nologies and through photovoltaic technologies we actually generate electricity off the grid that can be used for empowering the machine

itself, the electronics inside the machine but as well for recharg-ing external devices - thousands of them, such as portable phones, computers. According to Atti-sani, similar products use reverse osmosis - otherwise known as fil-tering - which requires expensive maintenance. The company says that a single unit will last for 15 years and, because it is emission free, can save as much as 1,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emis-sions (CO2), equivalent to 2,500 barrels of oil, while purifying millions of liters of water and generating 1GWh (1,000 mega-watt hours) of free electricity. Each unit communicates with a Central Network Management Platform, and also other units via radio-link, 3G or 4G networks, or satellite connections. Individual units can be adjusted to changes in climate or environment. At-tisani says that while one Watly is a stand-alone machine, using two or more Watly becomes a network that can power cities. The company successfully trialled its second, far smaller, prototype, the Watly 2.0, in Abenta Village, Ghana last October. Attisani, Wat-ly CEO and founder, told Reuters it transformed Abenta, providing what he calls the three pillars that modern society needs to prosper: water, power and connectivity. He believes the technology will prove empowering for impoverished communities. This technology does not patronize them with water wells, said Attisani. Im not at all criticizing this solution but you cant uplift a commu-nity around the world in the 21st Century by digging wells. People are made of water, but they need much more than water. You need to bring the 21st Century technol-ogy. (rtr)

OneWeb plans an initial pro-duction run of 900 satellites to provide global, high-speed Internet access as early as 2019. The multibillion-dollar network would be more than 10 times larger than any previous satellite constellation.

Led by founder and chief executive Greg Wyler, a highly regarded satellite pioneer, One-Web has raised $500 million from Virgin, Airbus, Indias Bharti En-terprises, chipmaker Qualcomm Inc., Hughes Network Systems, Intelsat SA, The Coca-Cola Co., and Mexicos Totalplay.

An official announcement about the factory is scheduled for Tuesday morning at an in-dustrial park adjacent to NASAs spaceport, where the plant will be

located. A number of localities in Florida and elsewhere had vied for the project.

The OneWeb venture will also mark the first time satellites are mass-produced, a potential game-changer in the rapidly evolving commercial space industry.

Similar projects are under development by Elon Musks Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, which last year landed a $1 billion investment by Google Inc and Fidelity Investments for another space-based Internet constellation.

OneWeb intends to not only manufacture its own spacecraft for high-speed Internet access, but also sell satellites configured for other purposes to other com-panies and organizations.

Europes Airbus Space and Defense Group, a partner in the project, has begun manufacturing an initial batch of 10 satellites for OneWeb at its Toulouse, France, manufacturing facility.

OneWeb will receive about $20 million in state and county financial incentives to locate near the Kennedy Space Center in the same industrial park where Jeff Bezos space company, Blue Origin, is building a rocket fac-tory.

Some of OneWebs satellites wil l be f lown by Bransons space company, Virgin Galactic, which is developing a low-cost, small satellite launcher, as well as a suborbital passenger space-ship.

OneWeb also has signed launch contracts with Arianespace for 21 Soyuz rocket flights from the Eu-ropean Space Agencys spaceport in French New Guinea. Up to 36 OneWeb satellites can fly on a single Soyuz rocket. (rtr)

As part of the Town of Gianyars 245th anniversary celebrations, distinctive flavor and preparation methods of this dish were presented in a babi guling festival and contest last Saturday night (Apr. 16th). Not surprisingly the contest drew large numbers of roasted suckling pig lovers including a fair number of foreign visitors who appeared to be very happy to witness the process of making this unique dish and of course the tasting of it too. To make

things even more appealing the pigs were presented with local fruits and flowers.

The roasted suckling pig con-tested was carried out during a car-free night organized at Ciung Wanara Town Park. The preparation of the Babi Guling however took place at Kebo Iwa Stadium.

Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. Gde Dalem Jagadhita, explained that their were 20 con-testants in the babi guling contest

and the jury was made up of 11 people including chefs, academics and Ginayar government officials. The constants were given four hours to prepare and present their dishes and several criteria were used in assessing the outcome including the weight of the pigs (20 to 25 kg), texture of the meat, maturity, flavor and the beauty of presentation.

Jagadhita said that the culinary festival/ roasted suckling pig con-test was held as part of government efforts to support the continuity of traditional Balinese cuisine. The contest is also a way to promote and introduce babi guling to the interna-tional community. (kmb25)

SEMARAPURA - Klungkung Police led by Chief of Operations Nyoman Suarsika, Chief of Narcotic Investigation Wiastu Andri Prajitno and Chief of Dawan Police Ketut Suastika organized a raid at several traditional harbors in Klungkung, such as the Tribuana Kusamba, Pesinggahan and Bias Kusamba Harbor, Saturday (Apr. 16).

The raid was carried out in a series of the drug syndicate eradica-tion operations (Bersinar) 2016 held by the Klungkung Police. During the raids, the officers were conduct-ing examination to passengers and luggage departed to Nusa Penida.

The raid backed up by Bali Po-lice K9 and the 1610/Klungkung Military District Command is first targeting the Tribuana traditional harbor. At the harbor, all the pas-sengers that will cross were checked one by one, both human passengers and goods. Having been examined, the passengers were allowed to come aboard. After the raid, it was followed by combing the daycare motorcycle warehouse at Tribuana harbor.

After conducting the raids at Tribuana harbor, the team was di-vided in two, one team led by Chief of Operations Nyoman Suarsika heading for Pesinggahan harbor and another team was led by Chief of Dawan Police Ketut Suastika lead-ing to Banjar Bias harbor to ensure whether there are no passengers bringing along drugs and other il-licit goods through the traditional harbor.

The raids held at several tradi-tional harbors at Dawan did not find any indications of drug trafficking and other illicit goods brought by passengers that will be crossing to the island of Nusa Penida. At the same time, the Chief of Public Service of Dawan Police distributed brochures on drug emergency.

All the personnel of the Klung-kung Police will continue to im-prove the drug eradication activi-ties. We are expecting the coopera-tion of the public should there be any information on the circulation of drugs in Klungkung district to report it to us, said Nyoman Suar-sika. (kmb)

MANGUPURA - Currently cen-tral government requires children aged below 17 years to have a child identity card (KIA). This policy is following the new rules related to the administration of education in 2016 by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The government of Badung has been making preparation for the new policy. The Head of Badung Population and Civil Registry Agency, Nyoman Soka, confirmed on Sunday (Apr. 17) that in prin-ciple he claimed to have known about the new policy.

It is true that people aged be-low 17 years old must have a KIA. This program belongs to central government. So, in principle we fully support the program issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, he said.

However, the government of Badung has not been able to imple-ment this policy in the near future. According to the existing data, the total number of population in Ba-dung amounts to 462,036 people. Among them, 143,000 are children under the age of 17 years.

    With many considerations, Ba-

dung will just allocate the budget for KIA program next year. We have prepared, but the budget of the program has been allocated in the regional budget 2017, but not this year, said Soka.

As is known, the KIA program was launched by the Minister of Home Affairs Tjahjo Kumolo. The program refers to the regulation of the Minister of the Home Affairs No. 2/2016. In accordance with Article 2 in the regulation, the is-suance of KIA aims to improve data collection, protection and ful-fillment of peoples constitutional rights. There are two mechanisms of submitting the KIA. The first is for children with the ages of 0-5 years and the second is for children aged 5-17 years.

Well, this card will be issued simultaneously with the release of their birth certificate. This is spelled out in Article 3 of the Regulation of the Minister of Home Affairs. When they have been over 5 years, the submission must be equipped with several requirements, such as birth certificate, family card (KK), including identity cards of both parents. (kmb27)

TOKYO - The United States will respond strongly in the case of a further North Korean nuclear test, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Ant-ony Blinken said on Monday, days after the Norths failure to launch what the United States believes was an intermediate-range ballistic

missile. North Korea conducted a fourth nuclear test in January and a long-range rocket launch the next month, both in contravention of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Expanded U.N. sanctions aimed at starving North Korea of funds for its nuclear weapons programme

were approved in a unanimous Security Council vote in early March on a resolution drafted by the United States and China.

Blinken, who is meeting senior Japanese government officials in To-kyo, told reporters North Korea would be digging itself deeper into a hole if it

pursued further provocations. There will be additional strong

response in case of another (North Korean) nuclear test, Blinken said, adding that such actions by North Korea were unacceptable.

Blinken said the United States would consider a number of pos-

sibilities while adding that it was premature to be specific.

Some experts expect North Ko-rea to conduct its fifth nuclear test in the near future, possibly before its party congress in early May, following the embarrassing missile failure on Friday. (rtr)

In an outcome that was unex-pected only in terms of how quickly it was reached, the Senate voted against the governments proposal to reinstate a building industry regulator, 34 votes to 36.

Turnbull was expected to address the lower house later on Monday and formally dissolve parliament and call for an election on July 2, media reported.

Hamstrung by a Senate domi-nated by minor parties and the main centre-left Labor party, Turnbull used the rare double dissolution manoeuvre - only possible after a bill has been rejected by the Senate twice - to clear both government houses and put the entire legislature to a poll.

    When Turnbull recalled parlia-

ment last month from a seven-week recess, it was only the fourth time in more than 50 years a government has used that measure.

Turnbull said then that if the bill failed to clear the Senate he would call an election for July 2.

The bill had been widely ex-pected to be blocked in the Sen-ate, where opposition lawmakers depicted the proposed construc-tion watchdog as a covert attack on unions, but Turnbull pursued it nonetheless since he has sought a reason to call an election amid slid-ing opinion polls and a deadlocked upper house.

Opinion polls showed support for the ruling Liberal Party-led co-alition lingering at its lowest level since Turnbull assumed office last

September.Support for the coalition was 49

percent, a Newspoll found on Mon-day, on a two-party preferred basis where votes for minor parties are redistributed to the two main blocs according to preferences.

Turnbull retained his lead as preferred prime minister over Labor leader Bill Shorten. But his popular-ity has waned amid perceived dith-ering over tax reform, a rejection of calls for an investigation into major banks and planned cuts to spending on hospitals and schools.

The sagging polls and likely early election will add pressure on Treasurer Scott Morrison to issue a voter friendly budget on May 3.

But analysts said Morrison faces a difficult task of addressing a bal-looning budget deficit of about A$40 billion ($30.67 billion) this year while shoring up electorate support. (rtr)

KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian prime ministers brother, Nazir Razak, announced on Monday that he was taking voluntary leave of absence from his role as chairman of CIMB Group Holdings Bhd amid an independent review into money transfers to his personal account.

Nazir was dragged into a scandal around political funding and alleged misuse of money from state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) after the Wall Street Journal reported last month that he received $7 million in funds from his elder brother, Prime Minister Najib Razak, before the 2013 elections.

Nothing I did was illegal or compromised my position at CIMB, but given the media attention, I understand that it makes the stakeholders uncomfortable. So, I want to make sure that the institution does the right thing in dealing with this, Nazir told a news conference after the banks annual general meeting, explaining his decision to take leave.

Nazir, a leading Malaysian corporate figure, had said earlier that he believed the money came from legitimate fund-raising, and said that CIMB bank staff disbursed the funds to ruling-party politicians on the instructions of his brother.

At Mondays news conference, the banker spoke of Najibs request for assistance, and said it was the first and last time he had been asked for such help.

My brother asked for some help and I agreed after I assessed that it would not involve anything illegal or misuse of my position at CIMB, or any inappropriate use of CIMBs resources, Nazir told a news conference after the banks annual general meeting.

I acted based on what I knew at that time and of course, given all the controversy surrounding 1MDB and sources of political funding since 2014, I regret it, he added.

The CIMB board has accepted Nazirs decision to go on leave. The bank has engaged Ernst & Young to assist in the reviews. (rtr)

SINGARAJA - Application of Regional Bylaw No. 1/2013 on Waste Management requires the residents in Buleleng to dispose of waste in place. Otherwise, get ready to undergo misdemeanor trial in court. To accustom people of throwing waste in place, some circles in Buleleng have attempted a breakthrough to change the appear-ance of trash can. Some trash cans are painted with various attractive designs. Trash cans are usually dirty and disgusting, now they are turned into an interesting object. As a result, residents are becoming more interested to dispose of waste in place.

This breakthrough was attempt-ed by Manik Bumi Foundation with the involvement of some artists, students and the general public to paint dozens of trash cans last weekend. As planned, the painted trash cans will be installed in the area of Kampong Singaraja. This location is used as a pilot project and will be further developed to other areas.

Founder of the Manik Bumi Foundation, Luh Gede Juli Wirah-mini, said that the idea to paint the trash can emerged after seeing the issues in the field where peoples awareness of disposing of waste in place needs to be improved. Moreover, after the municipal police aggressively patrol and secure littering residents, she tried to stimulate so that people are accustomed to throwing waste in place. The idea was then tried to

be applied by inviting artists, musi-cians, students and general public to paint some trash cans. Departing from this idea, July has confidence when trash cans are made attractive, people will be interested to dispose of waste in place. Besides, the idea is meant to change the impression that all this time trash can is dirty and spreading disgusting scent.

At initial stage, we make about 30 trash cans with various painting designs. Later on, we put on them in the area of Kampong Singaraja and there will be an evaluation for us so that we can proceed to other areas, she said.

In the meantime, Hary Sujayan-tha, one of the painting participants, admitted that awareness of main-taining environmental sanitation cannot be charged to the govern-ment alone. However, the peoples awareness is also very important. To that end, the awareness of dumping waste in place needs to be encouraged. Actually this aware-ness can be changed with trash can deliberately made with different designs. To that end, he participated to design trash can to make it more interesting.

As on this trash can, I feature the theme People and the Environ-ment. Relationship between hu-mans and the environment should be harmonious. The awareness of keeping the environment clean from plastic waste will be embed-ded, said the man better known as personnel of Poleng Band. (kmb38)

Principal of the GMIS, Miss. Jaba Biswas, said there are four performing arts held each year at the school she leads. They are pre-sented by students of kindergarten, elementary, junior high and high school. Performance of the Julius Caesar drama by the junior high school students is the first held this year. The performance was also witnessed by their parents.

Education only sourcing from books alone is not enough. Self-confidence of the students must also be developed, where one of which can be made through this perform-ing art, she said. Jaba Biswas added that her students prepared the show for a month. They had to go through audition stages, so that not all the junior high school students were involved in the play. Those having not passed in the audition are involved behind the scenes or

employed in the reception. They do practice after school

under guidance of their teachers, she added. She also continued that her institution also wanted to raise social awareness of the students. It is evidenced by their success to raise funds from the show. After that, it is donated to the Tat Tvam Asi orphanage. Representative of the orphanage was invited to re-ceive the donation after the show ended.

In every show, we always raise funds to be further donated to different place. For this moment, we donate it to the Tat Tvam Asi orphanage, she explained.

MYP Coordinator, Emil Elbert Macaraig, said that Julius Caesar is one of the works by William Shakespeare studied by the students of the GMIS in English Literature. The students being able to present

their best performance will get added score in terms of performing art and language skills.

We hope that the students can also obtain moral messages from the storyline of the drama they present, especially in the matter of friendship, he said. Emil added that there are various obstacles encountered during the preparation. However, as a teacher he continues to motivate their students so as to get self-confidence in presenting dialogues. As a result, the drama presented finally becomes a good one.

Two teachers are assigned as di-rector, while the others are in charge of organizing the music, lighting and decorating the stage, he added. According to Emil, the perform-ing arts have positive impact in increasing the self-confidence of the students. Besides, they have more sensitivity to cooperate with others, such as with fellow students and teachers.

Three central figures in the sto-ryline of Julius Caesar drama are Julius Caesar played by Nathan, Brutus played by Jason and An-thony played by Matthew. (ad)

The quake damaged Hondas motorcycle plant in Kumamoto, the largest city affected by the two quakes that hit late Thursday and early Saturday, killing at least 42 people. Japans Nikkei 225 stock index tumbled more than 3 percent Monday in part on worries over quake repercussions as well as a spike in the yen and drop in oil prices.

But the economic impact is nowhere near as large as the havoc wreaked by the 2011 quake and tsu-nami disasters, which slammed sup-ply chains so badly that Japanese automakers production was halted even in the U.S. They learned the hard way about their vulnerability to such interruptions, especially from second-tier and third-tier sup-

pliers, and have worked to create contingency plans.

Disasters tend to hobble Japans mighty manufacturers because they are supported by small machine-shops that provide components to bigger suppliers, which in turn supply bigger players.

That kind of lesson has been learned, said Nissan Motor Co. spokesman Dion Corbett. We now have maps that show where exactly the suppliers are.

Nissans two plants in Kyushu were temporarily shut down af-ter the quakes for checkups. The checks found damage was minor, allowing the plants to be resume operations on Monday, he said.

Some of the worst affected areas are deep in the mountains surround-

ing Mount Aso, Japans largest ac-tive volcano, an area renowned for dairy farming. But one of the hard-est hit cities was Mashiki, a center for semiconductor fabrication and other manufacturing.

Sony Corp. said its sensor and device plant in Kumamoto was closed. Although the buildings structure was intact and no employ-ees were injured, the precise nature of the production processes requires that delicately calibrated equipment must be checked carefully.

The impact to near-term eco-nomic activity looks inevitable, while the comprehensive picture is difficult to gauge now, particularly due to the continued aftershocks, Masamichi Adachi of J.P.Morgan said in a commentary. Overall, the risk to the outlook for growth is to the downside, he said.

JERUSALEM After Israels war against Gaza militants in 2014, Arab countries led the way in pledging reconstruction aid to the devastated seaside enclave. But a new report released Monday by the World Bank shows that Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and other Arab donors have delivered only a small fraction of what was promised.

The World Bank released its report a day before a gathering of international donor countries in Brussels, sending the meeting a stark message that donations are well behind the schedule set when pledges were made at an international conference in October 2014.

Actual disbursements fall short of planned disbursements by around $1.3 billion, and hence, donors are urged to accelerate the disbursement of funds, the report said. If donor funding continues at the current pace, it added, pledges are expected to be complete by mid-2019, some two years behind schedule.

Israel launched the war in July 2014 in what it said was a cam-paign to halt heavy rocket fire from the territory, which is ruled by the Islamic militant group Hamas. During 50 days of fighting, more than 2,200 Palestinians were killed, over half of them civilians, ac-cording to U.N. and Palestinian estimates. Seventy-three people, including six civilians, were killed on the Israeli side.

The fighting also inflicted heavy damage on Gaza, damaging or destroying some 171,000 homes, according to U.N. figures. The Palestinians say 75,000 people remain homeless. Israel says Hamas is responsible for the damage, noting the group used resi-dential neighborhoods for cover as it fired rockets, triggering Israeli retaliation.

At the 2014 conference in Cairo, the international community pledged some $3.51 billion in aid over three years to rebuild Gaza. According to Mondays report, as of the end of March, $1.41 bil-lion has been delivered, compared to $2.71 billion that should have arrived based on the original schedule.

Qatar led the list of donors in 2014, pledging $1 billion. The energy-rich countrys foreign minister at the time, Khalid bin Mohammed al-Attiyah, denounced the international silence that surrounded Gazas destruction.

While the Palestinian people need financial support, they need more political support from the international community, he said at the time.(ap)

Protesters who say the two-day confer-ence will help revive communism scuffled with police outside the tightly guarded venue, in a sign of the deep divisions within Indonesia over what rights groups say was one of the worst atrocities of the last century.

Researchers estimate that the military and religious groups killed half a million people in the attacks on communists and sympathizers that ushered in the 32-year rule of the dictator Suharto.

Conference organizer Agus Widjojo, a retired general, said at the meeting that Indonesia is torn apart by the massacres and called for the government to establish a commission for truth and reconciliation.

Within Indonesia, widely accepted ac-counts of the era gloss over the deaths, and descendants of Communist Party members are stigmatized and face legal discrimi-nation that prevents them from holding government jobs.

But the conference, being held at a hotel in Jakarta, the capital, has the backing of government figures and was opened by the Cabinet minister in charge of security and political affairs, Luhut Pandjaitan. Indonesias attorney general, police chief and justice minister also attended.

The killings began in October 1965,

shortly after an apparent abortive coup in which six right-wing generals were killed. Suharto, an unknown major general at the time, filled the power vacuum and blamed the assassinations on Indonesias Com-munist Party, which was then the largest outside the Soviet Union and China, with 3 million members.

Lets open this history together so we can all find out what has been wrong in our national system, why this nation could have the ability to commit mass killings, said Widjojo, whose father was one of the generals killed.

Abdul Rashid, 71, was one of the thou-sands who escaped death but suffered years of imprisonment without trial or exile in remote corners of Indonesia because of a tenuous connection to the Communist Party. Rashids crime was joining a youth group in South Sulawesi province that didnt advertise its links to communists. Four years later, when he was 21, he was seized by troops while teaching an elemen-tary school class, and lost more than a decade of his life to detention and exile.

I still remember how a dozen military troops pushed into my class, he said in an interview. They pushed in and pointed their rifles at me in front of my students. After being freed, a special stamp in his

identity card made life difficult, stigmatiz-ing Rashid and his family and making it hard to find work.

This stigma is a too heavy burden, he said. There are so many innocent people who became victims of a black history. I want this stigma to be ended.

Despite government backing for the conference, Pandjaitan, the security min-ister, said there would be no government apology to victims and also questioned whether estimates of the death toll were accurate.

I believe that this meeting will produce positive results to build our nation in the future, he said. We must be able to cre-ate peace with our past. But dont ever think that the government will offer any apology.

Andreas Harsono, Indonesia researcher for Human Rights Watch, said the two-day symposium by itself is not sufficient to come to terms with a buried past.

At the least, what the government can do is stop discrimination against the victims the survivors and their chil-dren and their grandchildren, he said. Millions of people are affected by a 1981 presidential decree barring communists and their descendants from serving in the police, military or civil service. Before the conference, rights groups urged the United States to release all of its secret files on the massacres, which could help reveal facts about the period.(ap)

JAKARTA - Head of the National Counter-terrorism Agency (BNPT) Tito Karnavian said Santosos terrorist group in Poso, Central Sulawesi, is running out of logistics and is now becoming weaker and weaker.

The exchange of fire between Santoso members and the security officers two weeks ago cut off the logistics distribution lanes of the Santoso group, Tito said after a ceremony held to observe the anniversary of the Armys Special Strike Forces (Kopassus) here Saturday.

His men also arrested two members of the Santoro group who emerged from their hide-outs to look for logistics, he said. The number of Santoso group has been reduced from 41 to 27 now, which includes two women, the BNPT predicted.

During the armys operation, the local people also took part and supported the operations, Tito said. We are supported by the people, as the people do not support them, the BNPT chief said.

The Indonesian National Police will also provide a bonus to its personnel who are able to arrest Santoso, he said. Quoting Police Chief Badrodin Haitis statement, Tito added that the bonus would be given in the form of extraordi-nary rank promotion or scholarship. The bonus will be provided to arouse the spirit of personnel assigned there, he said.

In order to arrest members of the Santoso group in Poso, the government has launched an operation with a special task force called the Tanombala task force. The Tinombala task force team arrested two more alleged members of the Eastern Indonesia Mujahidin terrorist group under Santoso or Abu Wardah in Central Sulawesi, police said.

The two men, identified as IB alias AM alias ID (21), who joined the group in 2013, and SH alias Faqih (19), who joined it in 2015, were arrested near Poso Friday, police spokesman Brig. Gen. Agus Rianto said here Saturday.

The two arrests brought the number of the group members to 16 killed and arrested under the Tinombala operations by the police and the military. Ten members of the eastern Indonesia Mujahiddin Group had been killed and four oth-ers were arrested by the security forces in Central Sulawesi, police said earlier.

Four of them were caught alive while 10 others died, the chief of the Central Sulawesi Police Brig. Gen, Rudy Sufahriadi said in Poso Friday.

The arrest of the two suspected terrorists coincided with the arrival in Poso of police chief Badrodin Haiti, chief of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT), Com. Gen. Tito Karnavian, and chief of the police Mobile Brigade Insp. Gen. Murad Ismail.

The three held a meeting with Brig. Gen. Rudy Sufahriadi and district military commander Col. Muhammad Saleh Mustafa and district police chief, Adj. Sen. Comr. Ronny to discuss the security situation in the region.

The Tinombala operation involving 2,500 military and police personnel was formed in January 2016, after strict orders of President Joko Widodo to wipe out the terrorist group, which had made Poso a security threat for years.(ant)

Fireworks lit up the night sky in Brazils megacities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro after the op-position comfortably surpassed the two-thirds majority needed to send Rousseff for trial in the Senate on charges of manipulating budget accounts.

The floor of the lower house was a sea of Brazilian flags and pump-ing fists as dozens of lawmakers carried in their arms the deputy who cast the decisive 342nd vote, after three days of a marathon debate.

The final tally was 367 votes cast in favour of impeachment, versus 137 against, and seven abstentions. Two lawmakers did not show up to vote.

Brazilian financial markets were expected to open higher on Monday after the vote - a major step toward ending 13 years of the left-leaning Workers Party rule in the worlds ninth largest economy.

If the Senate now votes by a simple majority in early May to proceed with the impeachment, as expected, Rousseff would be suspended from her post and be replaced by Vice President Michel Temer as acting president, pending her trial. Temer would serve out Rousseffs term until 2018 if she

is found guilty. The impeachment battle, waged

during Brazils worst recession since the 1930s, has divided the country of 200 million people more deeply than at any time since the end of its military dictatorship in 1985.

It has also sparked a bitter battle between the 68-year-old Rous-seff and Temer, 75, that could destabilise any future government and plunge Brazil into months of uncertainty.

Despite anger at rising unem-ployment, Rousseff s Workers Party can still rely on support among millions of working-class Brazilians, who credit its welfare programs with pulling their fami-lies out of poverty during the past decade.

The fight is going to continue now in the streets and in the federal Senate, said Jose Guimaraes, the leader of the Workers Party in the lower house. We lost because the coup-mongers were stronger.

Opinion polls suggest more than 60 percent of Brazilians support impeaching Rousseff, Brazils first female president, less than two years after she won reelection in 2014.

While she has not been accused

of corruption, Rousseffs govern-ment has been tainted by a vast graft scandal at state oil company Petrobras and by the economic recession.

Hundreds of thousands of dem-onstrators from both sides took to the streets of towns and cities across the vast nation, in peaceful protests. Millions watched the congressional vote live on television in bars and restaurants, in their homes or on giant screens in the street, as the soccer-mad nation does for major football matches.

On the grassy esplanade outside Congress, a 6-foot-high (2-metre) security barrier ran for more than 1 km to separate rival demonstra-tions, a symbol of the political rift that has emerged in one of the worlds most unequal societies.

As the vote came to an end, hundreds of Rousseff supporters sat downcast on red flags and banners on the grass. A young couple, on the verge of tears, hugged each other.

On the pro-impeachment side of the wall, protesters sang and danced, drinking beer and munch-ing popcorn. Some took selfies and performed handstands, celebrating a decision that many said was a victory against corruption.

Impeachment sends a clear message that the politics of this country needs to be cleaned up, said Alesandra Dantas, a 28-year-old social worker. (rtr)

Brazilians demonstrate for the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff with a mock coffin as the Lower House of Congress voted in Brasilia, Brazil April 17, 2016.

In crushing defeat, Brazils Rousseff moves close to impeachment

BRASILIA - Brazils leftist President Dilma Rousseff suffered a humiliating loss in a crucial impeachment vote in the lower house of Congress on Sunday and is almost certain to be forced from office months before the nation hosts the Olympics.

She hoped to bury her relatives in Esmeraldas on Monday, but devasta-tion there is also severe and she worried about whether the hearse could make it along roads ripped apart by the quake.

The Saturday night quake knocked out power in many parts along the coast and some who fled to higher ground fearing a tsunami had no home to return to, or feared structures still standing might collapse. The countrys Geophysics Institute said it recorded 230 aftershocks, some strong, as of Sunday night. With makeshift shelters in short supply, many hunkered down to spend a second straight night outdoors huddled among neighbors.

Correa cut short a trip to the Vatican and flew directly to the city of Manta to oversee relief efforts. Even before touching Ecuadorean soil he signed a decree declaring a national emergency. Speaking from Portoviejo late Sunday he said the earthquake was the worst natural disaster to hit Ecuador since a 1949 earthquake in the Andean city of Ambato, which took over 5,000 lives.

Our grief is very large, the tragedy is very large, but well find the way to move forward, Correa said. If our pain is immense, still larger is the spirt of our people.

As rescuers scrambled through the ruins near the epicenter, in some cases digging with their hands to look for survivors, humanitarian aid began trickling in. More than 3,000 packages of food and nearly 8,000 sleeping kits were being delivered Sunday. Correas ally, Venezuela, and neighboring Colombia, where the quake was also felt, organized airlifts. Mexico and Chile sent teams of rescuers. Spains Red Cross said as many as 5,000 people may need temporary housing after the quake flattened homes, and 100,000 may need some sort of aid.

For Gods sake help me find my family, pleaded Manuel Quijije, 27, standing next to a wrecked building in Portoviejo. He said his older brother, Junior, was trapped under a pile of twisted steel and concrete with two relatives.

We managed to see his arms and legs. Theyre his, theyre buried, but the police kicked us out because they say theres a risk the rest of the building will collapse, Quijije said angrily as he looked on the ruins cordoned off by police. Were not afraid. Were desperate. We want to pull out our family. On social media, Ecuadoreans celebrated a video of a baby girl being pulled from beneath a collapsed home in Manta.

But fear was also spreading of another night of looting after 180 pris-oners from a jail near Portoviejo escaped amid the tumult. Authorities said some 20 inmates were recaptured and some others returned volun-tarily.

Seeking security from any unrest, about 400 residents of Portoviejo gathered Sunday night on the tarmac of the citys former airport, where authorities handed out water, mattresses and food. The airport was closed in 2011 and flights diverted to a larger facility in nearby Manta after Correa kicked out a U.S. drug interdiction operation stationed there.

Shantytowns and cheaply constructed brick and concrete homes were reduced to rubble along the quakes path. In the coastal town of Chamanga, authorities estimated than 90 percent of homes had dam-age, while in Guayaquil a shopping centers roof fell in and a collapsed highway overpass crushed a car, killing the driver. The government said it would draw on $600 million in emergency funding from multilateral banks to rebuild. But in the meantime, the digging and hoping against the odds continued.

In downtown Portoviejo, a few blocks from where a four-story hotel fell onto the Quinde familys car, the six-story social security building was a pile of debris. Downed power cables were strewn across the street.

The situation is heart-rending, Jaime Ugalde, editor of El Diario, the citys most-important newspaper, said as he surveyed the damage. Im going to return home and hug my wife and two kids. Were the lucky ones. Were alive. (ap)

PRETORIA - Disgraced Paralympic gold medallist Oscar Pistorius will be sentenced in June for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, after his original conviction was upgraded from the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Pistorius, 29, known as Blade Runner for the carbon fibre pros-thetic blades he used to race, faces a minimum 15-year jail sentence and cannot appeal after the countrys top court ruled in March that he had exhausted all his legal options.

Dressed in a black suit, he showed no signs of emotion during the brief court appearance and spoke on his cellphone as he left the court. He denies killing Steenkamp, saying he mistook her for an intruder at his home.

The matter is postponed to the 13th of June 2016, High Court Judge Aubrey Ledwaba said of the final sentencing. It will be heard until the 17th of June 2016.

Outside the court, a group of people in white t-shirts gathered in support of Pistorius holding placards.

Pistorius initially received a five-year sentence for culpable ho-micide, South Africas equivalent of manslaughter.

He was released from prison last October after almost a year behind bars and allowed to serve out his term under house arrest on his uncles property in a wealthy suburb of Pretoria.

But in December, the Supreme Court upgraded the conviction on appeal to murder. He was allowed to stay at his uncles pending the final decisions on appeals and sentencing.

The runner, whose lower legs were amputated when he was a baby and went on to become a global sporting hero, has lost millions of dollars in endorsements and sponsorships.

He reached the pinnacle of his fame in London 2012 when he became the first double amputee to run in the Olympics, reaching the 400-metres semi-finals.

Pistorius family spokeswoman Anneliese Burgess declined to comment on media reports that the athlete had been hospitalised over the weekend.

I have spoken to the family and they dont want to talk about it. They see it as a private matter and wont be commenting, Burgess told Reuters.

Steenkamps parents did not attend the hearing. The case has prompted a fierce debate in a country beset by high

levels of violent crime. Some rights groups had said the white track star got preferential treatment. (rtr)

Kawhi Leonard scored 20 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added 17 points as the San Antonio Spurs dominated the middle two quarters and romped past the Memphis Griz-zlies 106-74 Sunday in Game 1 of the two teams Western Conference quarterfinal playoff series.

San Antonio outscored the Griz-zlies 24-6 over the final 8:04 of the third period, turning a contentious game into a runaway, and led 81-51 with a quarter to play. The fourth quarter was left to mostly the re-serves, with Game 2 in the series to be played Tuesday in San Antonio with 8:30 p.m. CDT tipoff.

It just takes a little while, said the Spurs Tim Duncan, who had seven points and 11 rebounds. Once we got it going, then some shots started falling. Thats when we were able to extend the lead. Defensively, we were pretty solid the whole way through.

Tony Parker and Patty Mills scored 15 points each for the Spurs

and Kevin Martin added 10 points, all in the fourth quarter. San An-tonio hit on 42 of its 81 shots (52 percent), outrebounded the Griz-zlies 44-35 and had nine blocked shots to Memphis three.

Vince Carter led the Grizzlies with 16 points while Lance Ste-phenson hit for 14 points, all but two in the second half. Memphis, which has now lost all five games it played against the Spurs this season, was held to a season low in points, shot just 39 percent and went to the free-throw line only six times.

Defense is the focus of our program and I thought in the second half we did that pretty good, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. Our offense really bogged down in the first half -- we didnt move the ball and it was a lot of one on one.

Against the Grizzlies, who are tough, physical and aggressive, the ball has to move other than dribble, Popovich added. Its got to be

passed and people have to move. Both teams played a ragged

first quarter as there were nearly as many bodies pushed to the floor as baskets made while each squad tried to establish a physical presence. The Spurs led 22-13 after 12 minutes of play despite shooting just 35 percent from the floor. Memphis hit on just 5 of its 22 field-goal attempts with the ageless Carter, making just his fourth start of the season, scoring the Grizzlies first seven points.

Two baskets by Carter cut the Spurs lead to 26-22 four minutes into the second quarter and gave the Grizzlies some momentum. But a Leonard steal and dunk followed by another dunk by Leonard off an assist by Mills on the ensuing pos-session propelled San Antonio on a 7-2 run and created some breathing room at 33-24.

Parker reeled off five straight points on back-to-back drives and a free throw in the final minute of the quarter to push the Spurs lead to 48-37 at halftime. Aldridge had 13 points in the half and Leonard added 12 for the Spurs while Carter led the Grizzlies with 11 points in 12 minutes of court time. (rtr)

SAN ANTONIO - Defense carried San Antonio to the sec-ond-best record in the NBA this season but its likely to be the Spurs ability to get the most out of their offensive opportuni-ties that will be the key for a push for a sixth championship since 1999.

GIANYAR - Balis own Val-ley of the Kings is Gunung Kawi Temple in Tampaksiring. This col-lection of candi is beautifully situ-ated in a river valley surrounded by rice fields and jungle.

Gunung Kawi Temple is a col-lection of ten candi, created to evoke the appearance of temple fronts and designed to provide residence for the souls of ancient kings. The candi are hewn into the valley walls on both sides of the Pekerisan River. The Gunung Kawi Temple does have an inter-esting history. Inscriptions over each Candi approximate the date of construction to be in the 11th C. It is believed that each temple served as a memorial to a deified royalty principally because they are shaped like the burial tow-ers, or Candis, found throughout Central Java. But in Java they are free standing whilst those found at Gunung Kawi are actually hewn reliefs in solid rock. While the ex-act origin of the candi is unknown, there is evidence to suggest that the first set of five were built to honor King Anak Wungsu, whose rule over central and east Bali extended from AD 1050 to about AD 1080. It is possible that one was built for him and the other four for his wives, who would have ceremonially committed suicide after his death.

Gunung Kawi Temple is two rows of ancient royal tombs on the

banks of the Pakerisan River deep in a ravine overlooked by terraced rice-fields. The holy Pakersian River flows through the centre of Gunung Kawi cutting the site into two separate sections with a bridge to connect one side to the other. It is believed the holy waters of the Pakerisan sanctify Gunung Kawi, and the beauty of the place evokes a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere.

On the east side of the river are situated five candi which constitute the main group in this complex. Across the bridge are four candi on the west side. The remaining candi at the southern end is often referred to as the tenth tomb. At the bottom of the stairway and to your right-hand side through a small field (about one kilometer) is where the tenth tomb is located. The legend to this amazing place is intriguing. It is believed that the mythical giant Kebo Iwo carved out all of the ancient tombs in one night with his fingernails. There are 3 temples which so called the name as Gunung Kawi in Bali those are Gunung Kawi in Sebatu countryside, Gunung Kawi Temple in Keliki countryside and Gunung Kawi Temple in Babitra country-side. Behind the small temple you can find a couple of meditation caves, which indicates that this is a pre-Hindu place where monks and pilgrims came together to meditate. (IBP/net)

  • Leicester city striker Leonardo Ulloa says the players are not enjoying to the full their unlikely assault on the Premier League title and that the matches are getting tougher. The Argentine kept Leicesters hopes of lifting the trophy on course when he scored an added-time penalty to earn a 2-2 home draw with West Ham United on Sunday.

That point stretched their lead at the top to eight points over second-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand and travel to Stoke City on Monday.

A win would keep Spurs in touch with four games remaining in one of the most thrilling title contests for years.

Speaking before Sundays game in which leading scorer Jamie Vardy was sent off, Ulloa said the pressure is starting to tell on Leicester, who have never won the title in their 132-year history, and said other teams were no longer surprised by them.

Thank God were winning, but the truth is were not enjoying it to the full. Everyone wants to beat us and all the matches are getting more difficult as we approach the end. Were no longer a surprise, he told Argentine newspaper Clarin.

Were aware of the expecta-tions were generating not just in England but in Europe and the world of football. Were also aware that today we still havent achieved anything. But I think were not alto-gether conscious of the magnitude

of what were experiencing.Ulloa also paid tribute to the

fans and manager Claudio Ran-ieri, who has gone to great lengths to shield a team who started the season as 5,000-1 outsiders after narrowly escaping relegation the previous season from too much expectation.

The people (of Leicester) are euphoric. And they deserve this for

all the suffering last year. There are lots of fans who just cant believe it and others who are enjoying it like crazy. You can feel that happi-ness in the city but the team dont get caught up in that whirlwind (or maelstrom - take your pick).

(Ranieri) is a coach who is very close to his players, hes got a lot of feeling and experience, added Ulloa.(rtr)

The only negative note for Juventus was an injury picked up by Claudio Marchisio who was stretchered off in the 15th with a knee injury.

Tests revealed he has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and the Italy midfielder, who will miss the European Champion-ship, will be operated on in the next few days.

At the moment there is no mar-gin for error because we are in the final sprint, Juventus coach Mas-similiano Allegri said. The title is not yet won. We have a nine-point advantage, a good goal difference but we still need two wins and a draw.

Now we have Lazio and Fioren-tina, which will be two very diffi-cult matches. Our rivals have an easier run-in. Earlier, third-place Roma missed the chance to close the gap to Napoli to three points as it drew 3-3 at Atalanta.

Roma is four points above Inter in the race for the final Champions League qualifying place, with Fiorentina two points further back after a 3-1 win over Sassuolo - thanks in part to a comical own goal from visiting goalkeeper Andrea Consigli.

Cristian Brocchi made a win-ning start to his senior managerial career at AC Milan, having been promoted from his role as youth

team coach to replace Sinisa Mi-hajlovic last week. Carlos Bacca scored the only goal of an entertain-ing match to give Milan a 1-0 win at Sampdoria.

Brocchi said he hadnt yet heard from Milan president Silvio Berlusconi. The only advice he gave me in the past few days was to work on the players heads and thats what I did. I found lads who all want to finish the season in the best way. I thanked the team for what they gave on the pitch and I also want to thank Sinisa, who sent a message of congratula-tions for the win: its a sign of real class.

Today I fulfilled a dream of being Milan coach... after the adrenaline of the match, all the emotions have come flooding in - also because I finished my career as a player on this pitch. It was destiny to begin here.

Simone Inzaghi, who has made a similar move after being the youth team coach at Lazio, made it two wins out of two with a 2-0 victory over Empoli. Earlier, a stoppage-time winner from Alessandro Frara gave Frosinone a crucial 2-1 vic-tory at bottom side Hellas Verona.

Frosinone leapfrogged two points above Palermo and one behind Carpi, which occupies the last position of safety in Serie A. Chievo Verona drew 0-0 at Udi-nese.

Juventus knew that victory would leave it with one hand on the trophy and it seemed to be going to plan when Sami Khedira chested down Paul Pogbas chipped pass and volleyed it over Stefano Sor-rentino in the 10th minute. Juventus appeared shocked by Marchisios injury and lost its rhythm, allow-ing Palermo to create pressure, although Pogba did have an effort tipped onto the crossbar by Sor-rentino.

Palermo almost leveled when Franco Vazquez sent Aleksandar Trajkovski through and although his shot beat Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, defender Andrea Barzagli got back to clear off the line. It took Juventus until the 71st minute to double its lead when a corner came through to the back post for Pogba to tap in.

Juan Cuadrado sealed the match three minutes later after a delight-ful dummy and substitute Simone Padoin completed the rout, strok-ing an Alvaro Morata assist into

the far bottom corner. In Florence, Gonzalo Rodriguez opened the scoring and Josip Ilicic restored that lead after a Domenico Berardi equalizer, to set Fiorentina on the way to ending a run of six matches without a win.

The result was sealed when Sas-suolo goalkeeper Consigli went to kick an innocuous backpass to a teammate as it rolled gently toward him but somehow scuffed his shot so badly that he turned it into his own net. (ap)

GLAsGOW Fallen Scottish power Rangers marked the latest stage in its recovery by beating Glasgow rival Celtic 5-4 on penal-ties to reach the Scottish Cup final on Sunday.

Already preparing for its return to the Scottish Premiership next season, victory for Rangers in a match that finished 2-2 after extra time means it now has a shot at a first major title since winning the top flight in 2011. The follow-ing year Rangers was forced into liquidation in 2012 with tax debts exceeding $30 million and the re-formed club had to start again in the fourth tier, the countrys lowest professional league.

The financial meltdown denied Scottish football regular heated matches with international appeal between the Old Firm rivals. The only derby in the last four years before Sunday was last years League Cup semifinal which Celtic won 2-0.

Celtic was the heavy favorite again at Hampden Park with the team, managed by Norwegian Ronny Deila, on its way to a fifth consecutive Premiership title - but Rangers defied the odds.

Rangers was twice in front. Kenny Millers goal was canceled out by Celtic defender Erik Svi-atchenkos header and in extra time Barrie McKays superb strike looked to have won it for Rangers until Tom Rogic equalized. But in the shootout it was Rogics missed penalty that sent Rangers into the final where it will face Hibernian, which also plays in the second tier Championship.

I was irritated by people under-estimating Rangers, Rangers man-ager Mark Warburton said. I read reports about them getting battered by Celtic today. Well (Rangers) showed today that theyve got qual-ity, theyve got the commitment and the work ethic and that gap is a lot, lot narrower than people are talking about.

Weve been good this season. Were not clear in the league by 17 points by chance. We deserve to be and the young squad has come together quickly. Rangers, the record 54-time winner of the top flight, has already secured promo-tion to the Premiership by winning the Championship.

Im just delighted for the fans, Warburton said. Theyve been in some dark places over the last four or five years, so its tremendous that they can enjoy days like today.

Matches between Celtic and Rangers are among the most bitterly contested in world soc-cer, with the clubs traditionally divided along mostly sectarian lines Roman Catholics sup-porting Celtic and Protestants behind Rangers.

There was no major trouble reported at the national stadium on Sunday ahead of the rivalry resum-ing on a regular.

We are going to be ready when they come up, Deila said. Now we are top of the league and we are going to fight to get that title to Celtic Park. We will see next year what they have to offer. It is a totally different thing to do something over 38 games than to do it over one. (ap)

BArceLONA - Barcelonas players returned from the international break at the start of April confident of achieving an unprecedented second straight treble. Little more than a fortnight later, they have been knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid and seen their nine-point lead at the top of La Liga eliminated.

Sundays 2-1 defeat at home to Valencia was Barcas third in a row for the first time since 2003, when they finished sixth in the standings and empty handed.

Barcelona still lead the way due to a superior head-to-head record over Atletico, and they also have the upper hand over third-placed Real Madrid who are one point behind.

If they win their five remaining league games, two at the Nou Camp and three away, Barca will retain the league and they could also clinch a domestic double by beating Sevilla in the Kings Cup final on May 22.

Coach Luis Enrique tried to remain positive after the shock defeat by Valencia, a team they had thrashed 7-0 in a Kings Cup semi-final game just two months earlier. We still depend on ourselves. Our margin for error has run out and we are aware of the challenge, he told a news conference.

Weve got a marvellous challenge, if we win the five games remain-ing we will be champions. I played for Barca for eight years, this is my second as a coach and I have never seen the supporters get behind the team as they did tonight.

Defender Gerard Pique also gave an optimistic message, saying the team had played better against Valencia than in losses to Atletico, Real Sociedad and Real Madrid.

We cant be worried at all when you look at the way we are playing at the moment. We deserved a lot more but we leave here with our heads held high, he told reporters.

If we play like this well win the league, Im convinced of that. Al-though its a step backwards, playing this well will help the team mentally. Weve recovered the sensations from a month ago. (rtr)
