Women around the world face a so-called motherhood penalty, meaning when they have children, they lose pay and opportunity in the workplace, according to UN Wom-en, which promotes gender equality and economic empowerment.

The U.N. body seeks to make raising children an equal respon-sibility for mothers and fathers, said Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcu-ka, executive director of UN Women.

“Stereotypes that make it hard for fathers to take time away from work to care for a child are outdated leftovers from the ‘male breadwinner’ model and have no place in today’s mixed work-force,” she said in a statement.

Hathaway, who won an Academy Award in 2013 for her role in “Les Miserables,” is a long-time supporter of women’s rights who will promote policies such as affordable child-care and parental leave, said Mlambo-Ngcuka.

“To make the case for how this will increase opportunities for

women, we needed an advocate who had the intellect and passion to tackle this complex issue. Within moments of meeting Anne, I real-ized that we had found our woman,” she said.

Known for her roles in “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” Hathaway also co-hosted the Academy Awards ceremony with actor James Franco in 2011.

She has served as an advocate for Nike Foundation, traveled to Kenya and Ethiopia to raise awareness on child marriage and narrated “Girl Rising,” a CNN documentary film on female education.

“I feel honored and inspired by this opportunity to aid in advancing gender equality,” the actress said in a statement.

COVER STORYThis man from Nyuhtebel,

Manggis, added that infrastructure in the region or tourist attraction should be provided and arranged so that it becomes more beautiful and remains attractive. Road ac-cess to tourist attraction must also be improved when it is damaged or perforated. He gave an example that a foreign traveler having a promenade fell in the broken down sidewalk. Similar case may not happen again afflicting to travel-ers in Karangasem because such incident will become a very bad campaign in the eyes of travelers.

Gede Dana who is equally a member of Commission IV of the Karangasem House of Representa-tives said that narrow and jammed road often results in complaint

among foreign travelers and travel agencies. In addition, the over-flow of garbage, especially plastic waste, on the beach, in the moor or roadside actually becomes a scourge for tourism. Gede Dana from Datah added that damaged roads to tourist attractions happen like the route from Laga tourist attraction to Purasana ecotourism with forest and deer enclosure should be improved. The road ap-proximately along one kilometer to the location is damaged.

“The attraction is less organized and promoted. Actually, the location is a very beautiful and looming in the west of Mount Agung, while in the east, south and southeast sits an ex-panse of valley and at the distance in the southeast spreads the Indonesian Ocean,” said the old man having long worked in tourism industry.

Gede Dana added that other than maintaining the beauty and

appeal of natural environment and the arts, customs and culture, the facilities like harbor must be managed properly. He hoped that people in Karangasem may not just become spectator when around one thousands of foreign travelers are passing and crossing to Gili Trawangan through Padangbai Harbor, not to mention those riding boat from Jemeluk Beach crossing to Gili in Lombok.

“Tanah Ampo cruise ship harbor has been built and spent hundreds of billions of the state budget. The harbor should be quickly opti-mized and managed, so that it can be beneficial for the state and the benefits can be enjoyed by people in the form of increasing social welfare. Regent of Karangasem can encourage the management of the harbor, so that it may not be al-lowed to continuously be dormant,” he said. (013)

CULINARy maestro and res-taurateur, Chris Salans, recently spoke about his new team that was specifically put together to bring Spice to the next level through unbelievably innovative and re-markably creative food and cocktail pairings.

Now at Spice by Chris Salans, Chef Reynaldo de Luna II, Sous Chef at Mozaic Ubud for the past 3 years and Pius Ebang, previously head bartender and mixologist of the famed Potato Head and Ismaya restaurant groups of Jakarta – both

understand the intricate DNA of Spice in the cuisine that Chris Salans created. Today, the famed flavours are re-imagined and rebuilt into world-class cocktails as Pius works closely with Chef Reynaldo de Luna II to create cocktail pair-ings to complement Spice’s food offerings.

For example, for the Tempura Prawns Rujak, Pius created the Rujak Cocktail with Hendricks’s gin, Triple Sec and fresh lime juice. For Beef Carpaccio Rendang with mushrooms, he concocted the Cur-

ry Crush: vodka, lime juice, Triple Sec, and crushed curry leaf.

Co-Owner and Group Chef James Ephraim’s magic touch is apparent in everyone’s new favorite drink; the Jim & Jack. Originally a dessert made with jackfruit sorbet and glossy passion fruit gel, white chocolate and a tuille, he brought it all together with a dash of Jim Beam bourbon. He said, “If I find a blending of flavors that intrigues me — in, say, a dessert or a fish dish — I’ll see if I can build that into a cocktail.”

MANGUPURA - Coastal abrasion engulfing the Batubelig Beach, Kerobokan, North Kuta subdis-trict, is increasingly violent. Moreover, high waves continuously erode the land and undermine the foundation of the Bias Aud Temple owned by local residents.

Such condition was justified by the Head of the Badung Livestock, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, I Made Badra. When confirmed on Wednesday (Jun. 15), this official from Kuta said that temple foundation was eroded by tidal waves occurred within the past week.

“It (abrasion—Ed) is indeed true. We had time to check in person the temple affected by the abrasion. We have made data collection about the area,” he said.

According to him, the extreme weather as predicted by the national weather service (BBMKG) for Region III Den-pasar caused tidal waves with the height of 2.3 to 2.7 meters, making severe abrasion on the coastal areas. “Almost all the coastal areas experienced abrasion, including the temple located on Brawa Beach,” he explained.

In addition to the temple, at the same point there is also a post owned by the Badung Lifeguard (Balawista). Accord-ing to Badra, alarming condition occurred almost along the Brawa Beach because of being crushed by abrasion.

He also acknowledged that the occurrence of extreme weather lately causing tidal waves lately has aggravated the abrasion in Badung. “It needs immediate attention. However, the government cannot make the arrangement as a whole. Temporarily, we can only rearrange the sand having been eroded by waves,” he said.

According to the chief of Kerobokan customary village, A.A. Putu Sutarja, the Bias Aud Temple is exposed to severe abrasion due to tidal waves recently. He said the waves have eroded the foundation of the temple to perforate. “Yes, the foundation of Bias Aud Temple was hit by abrasion to disap-pear,” he said. (kmb27)

“We take the samples from 11 merchants (in the culinary stand of BAF—Ed). Of the 32 different sam-ples, in fact there are four positive samples or containing hazardous substances. They consist of two rice crackers declared positive to borax, while the skewer satay and twisted satay are positive to contain formal-dehyde,” said Chief of the BBPOM Denpasar, Endang Widowati, amid the inspection at the Denpasar Art Center, Wednesday (Jun. 15).

Endang added that the cracker samples were obtained from two different merchants, while the fish skewer satay and twisted satay containing formaldehyde were sold by a merchant. The result poses an initial identification that will be tested in laboratory. Her agency will also explore the raw ingredient of fish because the merchant ad-mitted to purchase it from another

merchant.“With this case, we will come

down again here and we provide them with coaching,” she added. Endang admitted that she already asked the merchants whose mer-chandise is positive to borax and formaldehyde not to sell such a food any longer to BAF visitors. According to her, the effects of consuming food containing hazard-ous substance are not immediately felt after eating.

“When free radicals come into human body, they will become the trigger of cancer. The longer accu-mulates, it will emerge if people are continuously exposed in five to ten years in the future,” he explained.

When interviewed separately, the Head of Bali Maritime and Fisheries Agency, I Made Gunaja, admitted that he has directed that merchants selling in the culinary

booth to offer healthy food. The finding of foods containing borax and formaldehyde, according to SOPs the merchants will be given a reprimand. When repeated, the merchants selling such a food will be excluded from the BAF arena.

“We have provided briefing

related to our standard operating procedures that in such case the merchants will be given verbal reprimand, written reprimand and then we remove them from the booth,” he said. However, contin-ued Gunaja, the foods containing hazardous ingredients as the re-

sults of initial identification of the BBPOM has been secured so as not to circulate again for public con-sumption. It is carried out by a team consisting of the Bali Maritime and Fisheries Agency, BBPOM, Bali Health Agency and Bali municipal police. (kmb32)

BANGLI - Snail attack does not only engulf tangerine plants of farmers at Mangguh village, Kinta-mani, but also tangerine of farmers at Landih village, Bangli. Snail attack adequately caused farmers to suffer losses. Due to the snail attack, tangerine fruits being almost ready to be harvested fall out.

Headman of Landih, Ketut Sudana, said on Tuesday (Jun. 14)

that the snails have invaded most of the tangerine crops of farmers at his village. Emergence of the pest has occurred since the past few months. “Snail attack began to appear this year, while did not appear last year. In the past, tangerine was attacked by golden flies,” he explained.

Sudana expressed that the snail attack is very detrimental to farm-

ers. Small snails attacked the fruits causing the ripe fruits that are ready to harvest to fall out. To overcome the pest attack, all this time the tangerine farmers of Landih spray chemicals on their tangerine crops. “We use a kind of pesticide but the results are not optimal. Every time sprayed, the snails hide and after that appear again,” he explained. He added to continuously address

the snail pests with consultation to relevant agencies and utilize the ADD funds.

As reported previously, the emergence of snails have caused some tangerine farmers at Mang-guh village, Kintamani, to be rest-less. The snails attacked the fruits so that the fruits being almost ready to harvest fall out. Related to this problem, the Bangli Agriculture

and Plantation Agency has made coordination with the agricultural expert from the Udayana Univer-sity. From the results of coordina-tion, the agency temporarily asked farmers to spray saline water onto tangerine crops attacked by the snails. This method is claimed to be quite effective to beat off the snail attack detrimental to farmers. (kmb40)

SHANGHAI - Walt Disney Co has opened the gates to its first theme park in China, prompting a rush from thousands of gathered Mickey Mouse enthusiasts to be the first to storm Treasure Cove, ride the Roaring Rapids or visit Disney’s tallest castle.

Disney’s largest overseas investment at $5.5 billion, the park is a bet on China’s middle class and booming domestic tourism. The U.S. firm hopes it will offset an otherwise lacklustre international theme park business, better known for cash-burning sites such as Euro Disney.

“This is one of the proudest and most excit-ing moments in the history of the Walt Disney Company,” chief executive Bob Iger said at the official ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, where he was flanked by Chinese government officials.

Iger and Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang read out letters of support from Barack Obama and President Xi Jinping.

Not everything has gone quite to plan though.

The opening gala - meant to be a bonanza

of fireworks, live music and dance - was rained off on Wednesday night, while at Disney’s park in Orlando, Florida, a young boy was grabbed by an alligator and killed.

Disney, though, sees China as its biggest opportunity since Walt Disney bought land in Florida in the 1960s for what is now Walt Disney World - the world’s most-visited theme park.

With that in mind, Main Street has been replaced by Mickey Avenue to reduce the feel of Americana while attractions include the Chinese-style Wandering Moon tea house, a Chinese Zodiac-themed garden and a Tarzan musical featuring Chinese acrobats.

Disney estimates 330 million people within a three-hour radius of Shanghai will be able to afford to come to the park: that includes Zhao Qiong, 36, who was one of the first visitors inside the park on Thursday with her 4-year-old daughter.

“Since she was young, my little girl has always loved Disney princesses, so I wanted to bring her to the park to fulfil her dream,” she told Reuters. (rtr)

The controversy over the ab-bot, Phra Dhammachayo, 72, in part reflects more than a decade of divisive politics in Thailand, which has permeated all aspects of life, including Buddhism.

The abbot is accused of conspir-ing to launder money by accepting cash stolen from a credit union.

But many of his supporters sus-pect he has been targeted because of perceived links to political op-ponents of the military-dominated establishment.

Officials from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) turning up at the abbot’s Wat Dhammakaya temple complex found rows of followers sitting silently in the rain.

“The temple is being partly cooperative, but when we went inside we were blocked by a group of devotees,” DSI deputy chief Police Major Suriya Singhakamol told reporters.

The DSI is a department of the justice ministry that deals with investigations of high-ranking officials.

The failed bid to enter the wealthy and influential temple was broadcast live on national television.

Scores of riot police, who car-

ried no weapons or batons, waited at a nearby government office but were not deployed.

Suriya said a police search war-rant was only valid until 6 p.m. (1100 GMT) on Thursday.

He said he was “confident” the abbot remained inside the temple.

“This mission is not over,” he said before leaving.

Citing ill health, the abbot failed to appear at a police station to an-swer graft charges in May.

His followers reject the ac-cusations against him saying the charges are politically motivated because of the temple’s perceived links with populist former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

A former telecoms tycoon, Thaksin was overthrown in a 2006 coup and has lived in self-exile since 2008 but remains influen-tial.

The ruling junta, which in 2014 overthrew a government led by Thaksin’s sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, has not commented on the attempted raid and appears reluctant to take sides on a reli-gious issue.

Revered Buddhist monks are of-ten seen as untouchable and many Thais would frown upon police entering a temple by force. (rtr)

TABANAN - In order to increase the interest in reading, espe-cially among rural residents, the Tabanan Regional Library held a bookmobile service. As a result, it is found that reading interest in the countryside is actually very high. Unfortunately, due to lack of facilities, in this case bookmobile service to rural areas, the service cannot be done optimally.

Library Fund and Service Section Head, I Gusti Agung Srihati, said that currently the library has only one bookmobile unit. This amount is not enough to reach schools at 133 villages throughout Tabanan.

On the other hand, the rural communities and school children are quite enthusiastic with the bookmobile visit. “For example, at Pupuan village people requested us to make a visit,” she said.

Aside from consisting of one unit, the bookmobile cannot accom-modate many visitors and can only be entered by three people due to the collection of books in the vehicle so that it seems crowded when many visitors come in to read.

The Head of the Tabanan Libraries and Archives, I Wayan Darma, said that the bookmobile service is scheduled four times a week from Monday to Thursday. In total there are about hundreds of elementary, junior high, high school and vocational schools and general public at villages to be visited by the bookmobile service. Seeing this fact, the bookmobile is considered inadequate coupled with busy schedule and extensive coverage.

The bookmobile currently owned is the assistance of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia in 2007. His agency had pro-posed for the assistance of another bookmobile in the Joy Reading Movement at the Maria Town Hall last March to the Head of the Na-tional Library and he expected it can be realized soon. It is narrated that Ratu Niang with the nickname Rangda Jro Agung is angry and will make a disaster for anyone who will hold initiation rite for high priest. As a result, tense at-mosphere occurred in the surround-ing communities of Mimba forest. After hearing the incident, the king then sent his vice regent Gusti Made Lor to investigate and resolve the issue. Unavoidably, fierce battle occurred between Gusti Made Lor and Rangda, leading to the defeat of Gusti Made Lor. After that, the king presented Bima Rampag composition to defeat the Rangda Jro Agung. Predictably, the victory finally takes side in virtues.

ference in the current performance is that I am displaying barong and rangda through pelegongan. The performance begins with Legong and then closed with Legong as well,” said the choreographer of Mimba Pralaya,” I Nyoman Suarsa.

Suarsa told there is a challenge in this Legong composition. As long as one month of the preparation, there are quite a lot of thought to be applied. Composition of Legong should not be out of the existing norms. The style of Legong compo-sition includes papeson (opening), pengawak (main part), pengencet (development of the main part) and pekaad (closing).

“I have been working on this

composition for one month. Actu-ally, it is not too long because it is handled by those having enough techniques. Otherwise, it may take long time as well because the players have been quite familiar with the techniques of the dance. The rangda, for instance, is indeed played by rangda dancer and so is the barong by barong dancer. Thus, we just need to harmonize them when each player must go out,” he explained.

More interestingly, the dancers and gamelan players in this per-formance are dominated by school children. Gamelan music arranger, I Wayan Reza Permana Putra, said that a total of 28 gamelan musicians and 13 dancers are involved in the performance. “Some of them are students of elementary school to high school. Last year we also ap-peared in the BAF,” he said. Before staging the Mimba Pralaya, the Citta Kelangen art studio also pre-sented the petegak semara pegulin-gan gamelan composition entitled Patra Sari and the welcome dance Wijaya Kusuma. (kmb32)

DENPASAR - Barong and rangda are well known as the symbols of rwa bhineda or basic dualism. What happens then when the barong and rangda are then staged in the pelegongan composition style? The Semara Pegulingan Citta Kelangen art studio from Sidakarya Denpasar, responded it through the performance of Legong Dance entitled Mimba Pralaya at the 38th Bali Arts Festival at the Angsoka Stage, Art Center, Wednesday (Jun. 15).

Critical foreign currency short-ages caused by slumping oil prices forced a policy change that President Muhammadu Buhari had resisted for months. The bank had defended the naira at a rate of 197 to the dollar while the currency was trading at up to 370 on the parallel market .

“They have to accept reality at some point after a period of denial,” said Ayo Teriba, CEO of Economic Associates consultancy. Companies were unhappy with the government forcing them to exchange their im-ported foreign exchange at the low fixed rate and, when they needed to buy some, use the parallel market at the much higher rate, he told The Associated Press. Emefiele indicated a floating naira should get rid of speculators. There will be only one exchange rate in “an open, transparent system,” he said.

Companies have gone bust, tens of thousands of workers have lost their jobs and militant attacks have shrunk oil production as Nigeria’s economy contracted for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Companies with naira earnings that the government has refused to allow them to repatriate will take a

hit. International airlines are hold-ing the equivalent of $600 million at the old exchange rate, according to the International Air Transport Association. Analysts warn of ex-pected interest rate hikes to tackle double-digit inflation.

“These actions are a down pay-ment on our people’s ability to succeed,” Buhari, under pressure to devalue since his March 2015 election, wrote Wednesday in The Wall Street Journal.

“Longstanding structural imbal-ances and overdependence on im-ports have been cruelly exposed,” Buhari wrote. “We are an oil-rich nation that imports most of our gasoline. We are a farming nation that imports most of our basic food staples.”

Many Nigerians criticized the de-lay. “And they finally float the Naira, 9 months late. It will take us 2 years to recover from this unnecessary stubbornness,” one said on social media. Another bitter commentator posted: “So we crashed our whole economy, killed business, killed bank jobs, suffered hyperinflation for NOTHING. We have floated the Naira — too late.”

But Kevin Daly of Aberdeen As-set Management said he was “pleas-antly surprised.” Many had ex-pected the government to devalue, but not enough. He said it remained to be seen what the government can

do to provide liquidity with foreign currency reserves some $10 billion below the published figure of $26 billion. The gap between the value of exports and imports will decide the new naira rate, Teriba said.

Daly said the weakened naira would fuel inflation but “this is the price they have to pay for a failed policy ... which has been like a noose round the neck of Nigeria’s economy.”(ap)

BUENOS AIRES — Argen-tina’s newly revamped official sta-tistics agency said Wednesday that inflation rose 4.2 percent in May from the previous month.

The first inflation figures re-leased since President Mauricio Macri took office in December showed that the numbers continue to rise despite his promises to tame skyrocketing consumer prices.

Macri’s government revamped the questioned national statistics agency in an effort to encourage foreign investment and regain lost credibility in South America’s sec-ond-largest economy. The agency has launched a new index, using

data as the previous one did from consumer prices in metropolitan Buenos Aires area.

“Resuming the publication of a key macro statistic is a very welcome development,” said Gold-man Sachs analyst Alberto Ramos. “But the new figure also shows that inflationary pressures are still very high.”

Consumer prices in Argentina have soared even more since Mac-ri’s government recently eliminated utility subsidies leading to sharp increases in everything from bus rides to light bills. Argentines have protested Macri’s unpopular deci-sions to eliminate subsidies and cut

thousands of state jobs, while still failing to curb one of the world’s highest inflation rates.

Argentina’s inflation numbers have been in doubt since 2007, when President Cristina Fernan-dez’s late husband and predeces-sor, Nestor Kirchner, had political appointees change the agency’s methodology. Since then, analysts say that official inflation has been grossly underreported. Eventually, even government allies publicly discredited the official inflation data and the International Mon-etary Fund refused to use Argen-tina’s numbers in global reports.(ap)

Wahid said the whales began stranding themselves during high tide Wednesday on the coast of Pesisir village in Probolinggo district in the province of East Java.

The whales, numbering about 32

to 35, are likely short-finned pilot whales, which live in tropical and subtropical waters, Wahid said.

Dozens of locals using two boats were trying to drive the last two strand-ed whales still alive into the deep sea.

The provincial Conservation and Natural Resources Agency will be conducting autopsies on the 10 dead whales to find out why they became stranded, Wahid said. The locals would bury the carcasses of the dead whales after the autopsies.

Pilot whales are among the largest of the oceanic dolphins, exceeded in size only by the killer whale. They are also among the most common cetaceans stranded.(ap)

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said he had called on Commissioner General Tito Karnavian, the candidate for the post of Indonesias police head, to improve the law en-forcement process in the country.

“I hope Commissioner General Tito Karnavian will increase professionalism in the police force, as the peoples protector, and improve the quality of the law enforcement process,” the president remarked here on Thursday.

According to the head of state, drug abuse, terrorism, and corruption were the three types of crimes that need to be ad-dressed promptly.

The president expressed optimism that the Indonesian House of Representatives would immediately appoint Tito as Indonesias Police chief. “I believe that he has the ability and is a smart person and is also competent,” the president emphasized.

President Widodo explained that the process to nominate Karnavian was in accordance with Law No. 2 of 2002 on the Indonesian Police. He said the government had sought inputs from several parties, including the National Police Commission, Police, and Indonesian people.

Karnavian is currently the head of the Terrorism Counter-measures Agency. He had earlier served as head of the Papuan Regional Police and Jakarta Regional Police. Karnavian was also the top graduate of the Police Academy in 1977.

Karnavian also earned a doctorate degree from the Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological Uni-versity in Singapore and a masters degree from the University of Exeter, England. Meanwhile, the current Indonesian Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti will be replaced as he is due to retire in July 2016.(ant)

JAKARTA - The National Anti Narcotics Agency (BNN) has revealed that nine pieces of steel pipe with methamphetamine concealed inside, were recovered from a house in Penjaringan village, North Jakarta, and originally came from Guangzhou, China.

“It is the third for the drugs syndicate to receive a thick steel pipe with methamphetamine concealed inside,” the Chief of BNN Budi Waseso said at a press conference, which was also attended by the Customs and Excise Director General Heru Prambudi here on Wednesday.

At the time of the drugs being searched, BNN had confiscated nine pieces of steel pipe with 50 kilograms of crystal metham-phetamine concealed in the pipes. According to Waseso, BNN has detained five suspects identified by their initials as HE, EN, ED, GN and DD.

“HE is a former Cipinang Prison inmate, who is now on con-ditional release. HE used ENs identity to open an account and an address to send goods,” he explained.

Waseso further said that the methamphetamine had just arrived a week ago from China and was raided at one of the houses in the Rawa Bebek area, which produces noodles. This mode of using a pipe to smuggle drugs is difficult to detect.

Waseso, who directly led the drug search, said his office has long investigated the case and made arrests after collecting suf-ficient evidence.

Earlier, the Deputy Chief of BNNs Drug Eradication Affairs branch, Inspector General Arman Depari, stated on Tuesday that the nine pieces of pipe, made of steel, weighed between 130 and 190 kilograms each and were four centimeters thick.

As anti-narcotic agents cut open one of the pipes, they found the best quality methamphetamine inside, wrapped in aluminum foil, he disclosed.(ant)

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Min-ister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Mar-sudi, has urged countries involved in the South China Sea dispute to re-spect the importance of international laws, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982.

“Without respecting international law, peace and stability will be difficult to achieve,” Foreign Minister Retno said in a press statement received by ANTARA here on Wednesday.

The statement was issued by the minister following discussions on the

situation in the South China Sea at the Foreign Affairs Ministers Special Meeting of ASEAN-China in Kun-ming, China on June13 and 14.

The meeting, which was attended by the ASEAN and Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministers, discussed prepara-tions for the 25th anniversary of the ASEAN-China partnership and re-gional issues, including the situation in the South China Sea.

The ministers considered com-memorating 25 years of ASEAN-Chi-na partnership, saying cooperation for peace and prosperity has become

increasingly relevant.Regional peace and stability should

be maintained in order to ensure the continued development of ASEAN member countries and China.

“Indonesia hopes that coopera-tion will create peace and prosperity, which will be translated with real actions,” Minister Retno said.

The ASEAN and Chinese For-eign Affairs Ministers agreed on the importance of the effective imple-mentation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC).(ant)

It means that there will also be more tragedies, like the one off the coast of Zuwarah, which saw more 100 bodies wash up on the shore.

But the fact that the migrant ships keep sinking is no deterrent. Haroon says he has not afraid of making the journey to Europe. Ha-roon has heard the statistics that one in 23 now die en route, but he tells me he is not afraid and the journey is worth the risk.

In Europe he says he can make lots of money for his family back in Niger. That the streets of Europe are paved with gold is a familiar story on the migrant trail.

In Libya’s cities people from all over sub-Saharan Africa wait by the side of the road looking for work to earn money to pay the smugglers - about £600 is enough. It seems there are no solutions to this crisis. By the end of the year more migrants will have made the journey to Europe and more, too, will have been claimed by the sea. (ap)

The John Lethbridge, a search boat contracted by the Egyptian government, is working against the clock to locate the “black boxes” that investigators say will help explain why Flight MS804 crashed on May 19, killing all 66 people on board.

Signals from the flight data re-corders needed to track them down on the seabed are expected to expire on June 24.

The John Lethbridge has pro-vided the first images of wreckage to investigators. A search team on board along with investigators will now draw a map of the wreckage’s distribution spots, the committee said in a statement.

It was not immediately known which parts of the plane had been found, nor whether the two flight recorders were nearby. The record-ers, one for voice and another for

data, were contained in the tail of the Airbus A320.

Previously collected debris will also be handed over to the investi-gation committee after “standard procedures” are completed by prosecutors who are currently holding it for forensic evidence, the statement added.

To recover the black boxes some 3,000 metres (10,000 feet) below the sea surface, investiga-tors will need to pinpoint the signals to within a few metres and establish whether the pingers are still connected to the record-ers. (rtr)

tions investiga-tors said on Thursday.

Their report, based on interviews with dozens of survivors, said that the Islamist militants had been systematically capturing Yazidis in Iraq and Syria since August 2014, seeking to “erase their identity” in a campaign that met the definition of the crime as defined under the 1948 Genocide Convention.

“The genocide of the Yazidis is ongoing,” it said.

Paulo Pinheiro, chairman of the commission of inquiry, told a news briefing: “The crime of genocide must trigger much more assertive action at the political level, includ-ing at the Security Council.”

Commission member Vitit Mun-tarbhorn said it had “detailed infor-mation on places, violations and names of the perpetrators”, and had

begun sharing information with some national authorities, who were prosecuting foreign fighters.

The four independent commis-sioners urged major powers to rescue at least 3,200 women and children still held by Islamic State (ISIS) and to refer the case to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for prosecution.

“ISIS made no secret of its intent to destroy the Yazidis of Sinjar, and that is one of the elements that al-lowed us to conclude their actions amount to genocide,” said another investigator, Carla del Ponte.

“Of course, we regard that as a road map for prosecution, for future prosecution.”

The Yazidis are a religious sect whose beliefs combine elements of several ancient Middle Eastern religions.

Islamic State, which aims to set up a theocratic caliphate in Syria and Iraq based on a radical interpreta-tion of Sunni Islam, systematically killed, captured or enslaved thou-sands of Yazidis when it overran the town of Sinjar in northern Iraq in August 2014. Several mass graves have been uncovered.

The militant group tried to erase the Yazidis’ identity by forcing men to choose between conversion to Islam and death, raping girls as young as nine, selling women at slave markets, and drafting boys to fight, the report said. (rtr)Main locations of

Andy Murray has what it takes to ruin Novak Djokovic’s dreams of sweeping to a ‘golden slam’, coach Ivan Lendl has said as the Scot prepares for another tilt at the Wimbledon title.

Murray has not won a grand slam since part-ing ways with Lendl in March 2014 after two years in which he won the 2012 Olympic gold, the 2012 U.S. Open and the 2013 Wimbledon titles.

The two rekindled their partnership on Sun-day and are already plotting to stop Djokovic, the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four grand slam titles at the same time.

The Serb has won the French and Austra-lian titles this year and victory at Wimbledon and the US Open in August would give him a calendar-year grand slam. Adding gold at the Olympics in Rio would see him seal the

golden slam.“To me there is a career grand slam, then all

four in a row, next the calendar year grand slam and on the top the golden slam (including the Olympic gold medal). Djokovic has a chance to do that this year,” Lendl told British media.

“Obviously Andy and I would like to ruin those plans if we can.

“We know Andy has it in him. So now the question is ‘can he do it again?’ I think that’s an easier question to answer than ‘can you do it at all?’”

Lendl and Murray’s renewed partnership began with a victory over Frenchman Nicolas Mahut at the Aegon Championships at Queen’s Club, the Wimbledon warm-up event, on Tuesday.

The Scot next meets countryman Aljaz Be-dene or Frenchman Benoit Paire. (rtr)

NEW YORK - Four Olympic weightlift-ing champions from Kazakhstan, includ-ing the sport’s most celebrated figure Ilya Ilyin, are among 10 lifters to have tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs at the London 2012 Olympics after their samples were reanalysed.

Ilyin, the men’s 94kg gold medallist, and three women champions, Zulfiya Chinshanlo (53kg), Maiya Maneza (63kg) and Svetlana Podobedova (75kg), failed tests, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) said on Wednesday.

The 10 lifters, who include seven London medallists in total and a current world champion and who were expected to be medal contenders at the Rio de Janeiro Games in August, have all been provisionally suspended, the IWF said.

Double Olympic champion Ilyin, 28, tested positive for dehydrochloromethyltestosterone and stanozolol when the International Olympic Committee reanalysed 2012 samples, the IWF announced.

Ilyin is to weightlifting what Usain Bolt is to athletics. He has nearly 400,000 followers on social media -- far more than anyone else in the sport -- and has been named male weightlifter of the year four times.

A winner of the sport’s leading accolade in 2005, 2006, 2014 and 2015, four-time world champion Ilyin is a national hero and also a per-sonal friend of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

His victory in London followed his triumph in Beijing in 2008. A multiple world record holder, he was confident of winning a third gold, at 105kg, in Rio.

Ilyin, who turned vegetarian and took a break from competition after the London Games, set his latest world records at the President’s Cup in Moscow in December. He had never failed a test before. (rtr)

For the second successive match, France left it late to secure victory with Antoine Griezmann giving the home team the lead in the 90th minute with a header. Dimitri Payet put the result beyond doubt with his second impres-sive goal of the tournament deep in stoppage time. “I would prefer us to break the deadlock a little earlier,” De-schamps said.

France meets Switzerland in its last Group A match in Lille on Sunday, when the Swiss are hoping to qualify for the knockout stages of the European Championship for the first time.

Switzerland closed in on the round of 16 on Wednesday, rallying for a 1-1 draw with Romania at the Parc des Princes in Paris. Bogdan Stancu put Romania ahead in the 18th minute with a penalty — his second at Euro 2016 — after Switzerland captain Stephan Lich-tsteiner pulled an opponent’s shirt.

Admir Mehmedi equalized in the 57th with a powerful left-foot shot to give the Swiss have four points after two games.

All four teams in Group A can still qualify as the new 24-team format means the third-place teams in the six groups have a chance to reach the round of 16. Romania, which has one point, meets Albania, which has zero, also on Sunday in Lyon.

In the only Group B match played Wednesday, Slovakia beat Russia 2-1 in Lille. The victory owed much to mid-fielders Marek Hamsik and Vladimir Weiss, who combined for both of their teams goals.

Slovakia withstood sustained Rus-sian pressure in the second half. But it was only in the 80th minute that Russia got one back with Denis Glushakov’s headed goal.

Both teams still have a chance to progress — Slova-kia, which has three points from its two games, faces England in its final group game on Monday, while Russia, with one point, takes on Wales in Tou-louse.

England and Wales meet on Thursday in Lens, which is only 30 kilometers (around 20 miles) from Lille. The proximity of the two cities and the arrival of thousands of English fans in the city where Russia played its second game stoked concerns of a repeat of the violence that marred last Sat-urday’s match between England and Russia in Marseille.

Russian soccer authorities have been put on notice from UEFA that their team could be kicked out of Euro 2016 if there’s any repeat of the violence that marred the match in Marseille. At one point last Saturday, Russian fans stormed an English section in the sta-dium in Marseille.

French authorities say police made 36 arrests Wednesday in Lille in a largely peaceful day interspersed with bursts of crowd trouble and a few fights. Authori-ties also say 16 people have been hospitalized but gave no details about their injuries or ailments.

On Thursday, in addition to Eng-land vs. Wales, Ukraine takes on Northern Ireland in Lyon and Ger-many meets Poland at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. (ap)

SAO PAULO — Corinthians manager Adenor Leonardo Bacchi, known as Tite, has been named the new coach of Brazil’s national team, according to his club.

The announcement was made by Corinthians president Roberto

de Andrade in a televised news conference on Wednesday, a day after the Brazilian Football Con-federation said it had fired Dunga as national coach.

“As of this moment, Tite no longer works for us,” Andrade said.

“He has accepted the confedera-tion’s invitation. Today was his last day with the club.”

Dunga was dismissed in the wake of Brazil’s elimination from the Copa America in the United States.

Brazil failed to get past the group stage after drawing 0-0 with Ecuador, beating Haiti 7-1 and los-ing 1-0 to Peru on Sunday.

In 2015, Corinthians won the

Brazilian Championship under Tite’s leadership. He also coached the in 2012 when it won the re-gional Copa Libertadores and the Club World Cup in 2012. (ap)

PAR-IS - Euro-pean soccer’s governing body UEFA said on Thursday it was planning no Ex-ecutive Com-mittee meeting in the wake of overnight fan violence on the streets of Lille.

UEFA’s deci-sion effectively means England are not under any threat of disquali-fication over their fans’ behaviour. Any decision to expel England for crowd dis-turbances outside

the stadium would need to be taken by

the executive com-

mittee.French riot police charged and

used tear gas to disperse rowdy English football fans in Lille on Wednesday, though the northern city was spared feared clashes with

Russian supporters.Throughout the day, po-

lice said, 36 people were arrested for various offences as Russia lost to Slova-kia in Lille and England prepared to play Wales in the same Euro 2016 group in nearby Lens on Thursday.

On Sunday, UE-FA’s executive com-mittee warned both England and Russia that it would “not hesitate” to impose sanctions, includ-ing disqualifi-cation, if there was a repeat of violent distur-bances by their fans in Marseille

the day before.These sanctions

would be in addi-t i o n to anything imposed by UEFA’s own disciplinary com-mittee which can only deal with incidents which take place inside stadiums. (ap)

(ap)

(rtr)

(rtr)

GENEVA - Islamic State is committing the crime of genocide against the Yazidis in Syria and Iraq, seeking to destroy the ethno- religious g roup of 400,000

tions investiga-tors said on Thursday.

“There has been many sto-rylines on rwa bhineda. The dif-

ference in the current performance is that I am displaying barong and rangda through pelegongan.

(kmb32)

(kmb40)

(kmb27)

AMLAPURA - Com-petition of tourist attractions

lately is increasingly fierce. Moreover, Bali and Karangasem in particular has been rivaled by NTB in particular, as proved by a lot of travelers crossing to Gili Trawangan. With the increas-

ingly intense competition among the tourist attractions, the government of Karangasem district is asked to maintain and re-arrange the tourist attractions in Karangasem.

It was submitted by legislators of the Karan-gasem House of Representative, Wayan Tama

and Gede Dana, in Karangasem. Wayan Tama who is also Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Karangasem said that this May the number of foreign tourist visit to Karangasem slumped when compared to the same month last year. He admitted not to

know about the cause, but expected the decline in foreign tourist visit to Karangasem does not happen due to saturation of travelers.

Libya has become one of the main routes to the continent following a controversial EU deal with Turkey to close down the crossing to Greece across the Aegean Sea. Under international law Europe’s naval vessels cannot enter Libyan waters; instead they must stay at least 12 nautical miles from the shore.

It means smugglers can take advantage by dragging boats out to sea and then setting

their course for international waters - and providing they do not stray from Libyan wa-ters they face no chance of getting caught.

Libyan coastguard’s head of operations Colonel Tawfik Alskir talking to Alex Rossi

Colonel Alski says the migrant crisis is getting worse. If they then get into trouble the migrants and the smugglers believe they will be saved - and often they are with more

than 13,000 migrants rescued so far.The coastguard’s head of operations,

Colonel Tawfik Alskir, said: “People, when they get rescued, call their friends to tell them that there are EU vessels only 20 miles from Libyan waters to save them.” This, he adds, acts as an incentive for others to risk the journey.

He also says that the migration crisis is getting worse and by the end of the year a record number of illegal migrants will have made their way across the Mediterranean to Europe. Part of the problem is that Libya simply does not have the resources it needs

to cope.In the Misrata area there are only two

boats that are operational to police the coastline. The others have been redeployed to fight Islamic State.

TRIPOLI - The Libyan coastguard has told that the EU’s Operation So-phia, which was devised to prevent people smuggling, is actually encouraging illegal migrants to make the perilous journey to Europe.
