Officials with the airline and the Egyptian civil aviation department told Reuters they believed the Airbus had crashed into the Mediterranean between Greece and Egypt. In Athens, Greek Defence Minister Panos Kam- menos said theAirbus had first swerved 90 degrees to the left, then spun through 360 degrees to the right. After plunging from 37,000 feet to 15,000, it vanished from Greek radar screens. Greece deployed aircraft and a frigate to the area to help with the search. A defence ministry source said authorities were also investigat- ing an account from the captain of a merchant ship who reported a ‘flame in the sky’ about 130 nautical miles south of the island of Karpathos. According to Greece’s civil aviation chief, calls from Greek air traffic controllers to the jet went un- answered just before it left the coun- try’s airspace, and it disappeared from radar screens soon afterwards. By early afternoon, the search in the Mediterranean had yet to turn up anything. “Absolutely nothing has been found so far,” a senior Greek coastguard official told Reuters. There was no official sugges- tion of whether the disappearance was due to technical failure or any other reason such as sabotage by ultra-hardline Islamists, who have targeted airports, airliners and tour- ist sites in Europe, Egypt, Tunisia and other Middle Eastern countries over the past few years. The aircraft was carrying 56 passengers - with one child and two infants among them - and 10 crew, EgyptAir said. They included 30 Egyptian and 15 French nationals, along with citizens of 10 other coun- tries. Dick Clark Productions, the or-ganizers of the Billboard Music Awards, said Kesha was initially given written approval by Dr. Luke’s label, Kemosabe Records, to which she is signed.

“Kemosabe subsequently re-scinded its approval following a media report on Wednesday, May 11th regarding Kesha’s appearance on the BBMAs,” the organizers said in a statement on Tuesday.

Celebrity news outlet TMZ.com, citing unnamed sources, reported on May 11 that Kesha was planning a “statement performance” at the awards show that would be focused on “her ongoing legal battle with Dr. Luke” and “might even include im-ages of him.”

Kesha, 29, said in an Instagram post on Tuesday that she had been “very excited” to sing “It Ain’t Me, Babe” as a tribute to Bob Dylan at Sunday’s televised Billboard Music Awards, and that her performance had no connection to her legal problems with her label or Dr. Luke, whom she has accused of sexual assault.

“I’m very sad and sorry to say I won’t be allowed to do this,” the singer said.

“I just wanted to make very clear that this performance was about me honoring one of my favorite song-writers of all time and has never had anything at all to do with Dr. Luke.”

Representatives for Dr. Luke and Kemosabe Records, a unit of Sony Music, did not immediately respond

to Reuters’ requests for comment on Wednesday. Dr. Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald, has previ-ously denied Kesha’s allegations of rape and emotional abuse.

Earlier this year, Kesha appealed a New York Supreme Court justice’s decision to not release her from a six-album contract with Sony, after the singer filed a sexual assault lawsuit against Dr. Luke in 2014.

The justice found that Kesha was free to record for Sony with other pro-ducers without interference from Dr. Luke, and that most of her claims did not constitute valid causes of action to nullify a contract under New York law. The case sparked the #FreeKesha campaign on social media and the singer earned support from other art-ists such as Taylor Swift, Adele and Lady Gaga.

Last month Kesha released her first new music in three years, team-ing up with DJ Zedd on the single “True Colors.” (rtr)

Billboard awards say Kesha set canceled by record label

LOS ANGELES - Pop star Kesha is not allowed to perform at the Billboard Music Awards after her record label rescinded its approval, the show’s organizers said, following the singer’s failed legal bid to scrap her recording contract with Sony Music and producer Dr. Luke.

He explained that not all 25 year vehicles or worthy of being validated. Therefore, this age limit should be further discusses with the executive branch of the House, in order to come up with a wiser formula for assesment and one that would of course seek to improve the the economy of the larger communitiy.

“In essence, we will refer to Law No.22/2009 regarding Road Traffic and Transportation. In ad-dition to settling the matter of ve-hicle age, the regional bylaw will also address traffic systems, road transportation, transportation and sanctions”, he added.

Udiyana asserted that a re-gional bylaw on road traffic and transportation in Bali is very ur-gent considering that so far there are no rugulations designed with Bali’s carrying capacity in mind. Traffic engineering he said is also imortant as a means to resolve

the problem of traffic conges-tion, noise and vehicle emissions. Environmental conservation and facilitating road use for people with disabilities also need to be considered, he added.

“We also plan to establish a Later ‘traffic communication’ forum, that will be composed of government officials, police departments and members of the private sector involved in transportation”, said this Golkar politician.

Head of the Bali Transporta-tion and Infocom Agency, Ketut Artika, said that the draft oof the road traffic and transportation regulation, essentially addresses the scope of traffic networks, traffic and road transportation, traffic engineering management, traffic management and the ve-hicle age. Accodring to the study conducted by the Special Com-mittee for Road Traffic and Trans-portation, private vehicles should not be older that 25 and public transportation vehicles should be no older than 10-15 years.

“We’d like to set diffenrt ages for private vehocles than for public ones. Based on the study, vehicles used for public trans-portation shold be no plder that 10- 15 years. The provincial inter-city buses serving routes like Bilimanuk-Padangbai for example, should be no more than 15 years old”, explained Artika.

Artika added that setting re-strictions on the age of vehicles is intended as a way to assure that the public in Bali is safe. This measure will not only regulate the number of vehicles that are oper-ating on the island of the gods, but will also empower and regulate public transportation. The re-gional bylaw draft on road traffic and transportation also sets forth parameters regarding parking services, traffic demand manage-ment and operating hours of the roads in the district / municipality, provincial and of national roads. Last but not least, the regulation also sets forth trules regarding the management of terminals and bus stops in Bali. (kmb32)

Delicious Food & Outstanding Service

“Most likely the mosquitoes have become resistant because of a wrong dosage of the fogging mixture and too much attnetino being given to the generation of smoke rather than the composi-tion. Much in the saem way that humans can develop a resistance to certain drugs if the worng doses are taken”, said Chairman of the Indonesia Public Health Associa-tion (IAKMI) of Bali, Made Kerta Duana on Wednesday (May 18). He continued that in the long run mosquitoes can adapt to the pesti-cides that are commonly used or the the wrong dosage used. Therefore mosquito resistance tests need to be done tin order to determine the most effective dosage.

Division Head of Disease Con-trol and Environmental Sanitation for the Bali Health Agency, Gede Wira Sunetra, said that there are already parameters set forth regard-

ing the correct dosage of pesticides use in fogging, namely 1:20 with 1 liter of chemical for every 2-0 liters of water. “Usually the fogging offi-cers have been trainned”, he added. Abate, he explained is used to kill larvae by sprinkling a sachet into a reservoir, bathtub or pond that does not contain fish.

“According to our surveying, there are some chemicals that mo-quitoes in Denpasar and Gianyar have become resistant to. These chemical will therfore be replaced with more effective ones, however abate is still considered to be effec-tive in killing mosquitoes larvae”, he said. Admittedly, the doses used in fogging are not precise and health center personnel have not beensupervising the situation. Maybe old pesticides are being used in fogging whereas new ones are available. Procurement of the pesicides used in fogging carried

out by the Ministry of Health as well as the provincial and district / municipal governments.

Sang Gede Purnama, a lecturer and researcher from the Public Health Department in the Faculty of Medicine at Udayana University, said that his department, working with the Ministry of Health has conducted a biochemical test on Malathion the pesticide used in fogging and found that it is not ef-fective because the residue of the fogging does not reach moquitoes perched on walls, in clothes and other hard to reach places. They are not affected by the fogging pesticide, but only by diesel fumes. “Yesterday I tested with bioassay. We fogged an adult mosquito at close range, and it in fact died with a 1:20 dose. Therefor it is the residue that allows the mosquitoes to build resistance”, he explained. Mosquitoes will only die if they are exposed to the pesticide, not from the diesel fumes generated by the fogging.

In effect, mosquitoes that sur-vive the fogging fumes will gener-ate offspring that are resistant to the pesticides used in the fogging.

Likely this resistance has come about because Malathion has been used for so long. “ What is more, hotels conduct fogging almost ev-ery week without coordination with the Health Agency” he said.

According to Purnama, fogging is no longer necessary nor effective because it has already been done been frequentlywith progressively increasing doses. “ I am confident that with a dose with a 1:20 ratio, mosquitoes will not die. Ideally there would be a stop to fogging”, he said. The nest thing to do, he added is to eradicate mosquitoe nests.

Even if the pesticide used in fog-ging is replaced with a new one, it will not be effective for long as the moquitoes are bound to build resis-tance to the new chemical. “ We’ve tried three different pesticides for fogging and none of them gave good results. So far Malathion is still more effective than any other”, he explained.

The University of Udayana’s Public Health Department has been conducted research since 2013, before the incidents of dengue began to rise and mapped

the risk factors for dengue in Den-pasar, Gianyar and Klungkung. The results of surveying by mo-quiot monitoring officers revealed that nearly 70 percent of homes in Klungkung had mosquito larvae, 50 percent of homes in Gianyar and only about 15 percent of Den-pasar homes had mosquito larvae lurking. However, beacause there was a higher rate of incidents of dengue in Denpasar at the time with no reported cases in Gianyar or Klunkung, the findings were considered insignificant.

“However, when a resident of Batuan was moving from one place to another, he carried dengue from Denpasar back to Gianyar. There are infection vectors in each area but the virus is very easily trans-mitted. In the case of the man from Batuan, his whole family becaem infected, including his sister and parents. As a result of this one family being infected the number of cases in Gianayr and Klungkung suddently exploded” he said. Based on the results of the research, the virus spreading in Gianyar and Klungkung belongs to dengue virus 2. (kmb42)

Fogging becomes ineffective as mosquitoes develop resistance to pesticides

DENPASAR — Mosquitoes in Bali have now become resis-tant to the pesticides used for ‘fogging’, making this practice innefective in killing adult mosquitoes. Not only have many mosquitoes become resistant to the pesticides used in fogging, but this practice alos polluted the environemtn and is harmful to human health.

AustrAliAn FAshion Week has kicked off with Toni Maticevski sending his collection down the runway, but it’s not just about the glitz and glamour as social media challenges the viability of the traditional trade event.

Fashion week’s international buyers are being joined by dozens of bloggers and digital influencers including social media heavyweights like Adam Katz Sinding, Lee Ol-iveira and Paola Alberdi.

Those three names alone account for more than 1 million Instagram followers combined.

No platform or lucrative interna-tional market is being left out, with influencers from China’s social me-dia site, Weibo, also in the mix.

Editor of Ragtrader Magazine Assia Benmedjdoub said Australian Fashion Week is quickly adapting to consumer needs in a digital age, which she believes is a matter of survival.

“I think they’re including con-sumer elements, they’re also includ-ing business seminars and other events, because it is an absolute ne-cessity to survive,” she said.

“If [Australian Fashion Week] sits still in the traditional runway format, then it’s not going to adapt with what’s happening globally.”

Benmedjdoub said a “see now, buy now culture” is also prompting brands like Burberry, Tom Ford and Karen Walker to include stock on the runway that’s readily available to customers.

Industry ‘needs to embrace’ change as buyers drop

Australian Fashion Week founder Simon Lock explained how the at-tendance of buyers has dropped from around 240 at the height of the event to just 24 this year.

He said the decline emphasised how fashion week is increasingly about connecting with Australian consumers.

“Half the designers are showing a collection on the runway just for consumers, the other half are show-ing for the industry,” he said.

“And there’s nothing wrong with that.

“This is a generational change that social media has to a certain extent forced on us and the industry needs to embrace it.”

Mr Lock said the content on the runway was broadcast to about 2,500 of the top retailers globally, who can see collections online and place wholesale orders.

“That’s the change that we’re see-ing in the industry,” he said.

Social media platforms like Instagram, Tumblr, Facebook, Snapchat, Pinterest, and Twitter also allow designers and buyers to gauge consumer sentiment be-fore garments have hit the racks or runway, shaking up how and when products are made acces-sible. (iBP/net)

Australian Fashion Week: Adapting in a digital age a matter of survival, experts say

On Wednesday (Amy 18) a num-ber of workers were seen busy at work preparing the site. Many passers-by looked on in surprise as the government has not given at-tention to the Monument for some time now.

“Thanks God, the government is finally fixing up the park as it has been neglected for too long. Once it is ready, I am sure that many people will be glad to enjoy unwinding in the afternoon at this recreational park”

sais Balhbatuh resident Putu Ardika. With regards to the work being

done at Blahbatuh’s ‘ the People’s Struggle Monument’, Head of the Gianyar Sanitation and Landscap-ing Agency, I Wayan Kujus Pawitra, said that only the statue itself will remian the same. The rest of the park will be planeted with a new garden and a foutnain will also be installed along with places to sit and enjoy the space. The work, he said should be completed within 90 days, so the

park will be all prettied up in time for August 17th. “Yes it is currently being worked on and we are hoepful that the contractor will do a good job and have the park finished by the agreed upon date”, he said.

Pawitra added that the greening of open spaces in Gianyar is be-ing done gradually. Currently they are focusing on major parks but in time sub-district areas will also be worked on. He added that he hopes that the community at large will par-ticipate in greening their respective neighbourhoods. If everyone has the same comitment to making Gianyar more beautiful Pawitra sais that he is confident that Gianyar will be a more and more enjoyable place to live. (kmb35)

seMArAPurA - To create orderliness and security in the community of Klungkung in particular, the Klungkung Police deploy the patrol and community service by cycling through the road section around the town of Semarapura. As seen by Bali Post, in fact, the officers of patrolling and community service drew the attention of people passing beside them. The unit consisting of six personnel is led by chief unit Ida Bagus Mayoga.

The cycling personnel regu-larly carry out patrol around the town of Semarapura from early morning and return to the base at the Klungkung Police station. It is regularly performed every morning and evening depending on the situation in the field. “In essence, police are ready to serve the community, provide security and maintain the orderliness,” he explained.

Of all the members consisting of approximately 34 personnel, they do patrol duties by using a bicycle in turn. With this activity, his institution hoped that people get a sense of security and good protection. This condition is also in series of compliance opera-

tions 2016 in Klungkung Police headquarters recently.

In the meantime, Chief of Klungkung Police, FX Arendra Wahyudi, said that the regu-lar patrol operation by bicycle also supports the success of the compliance operations 2016 held for 14 days on May 16-29, 2016. This activity is meant to increase compliance of the road users. Besides, it is to ensure the security and public orderliness. “Before conducting the external law enforcement, the Klung-kung Police will implement the internal one aiming to provide a good example and role model for the community,” said the Chief of Klungkung Police, Arendra Wahyudi.

The problems faced in all sec-tors are increasingly complex so that they need the participation of all stakeholders so as to raise the quality of service to the commu-nity. Besides, it needs coordina-tion among the government agen-cies being responsible for the development of public order and security. Chief Arendra stressed that police patrol by cycling is meant to make police get closer to the community. (dwa)

TOKYO- Japanese atomic bomb survivors say an apology from President Barack Obama for the U.S. bombing of Hiroshima would be welcome, but their priority is on ridding the world of all nuclear weapons forever.

Obama, who in 2009 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize partly for making nuclear nonproliferation a centrepiece of his agenda, will on May 27 become the first incumbent U.S. president to visit Hiroshima, site of the world’s first atomic bombing on Aug. 6, 1945.

The city of Nagasaki was bombed three days later.Obama’s visit to Hiroshima, after he attends a meeting of G7 leaders

in Tokyo, was hotly debated in the White House, with concern it would be criticised in the United States if it was seen as an apology.

Most Japanese feel the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were unjustified. Many in the United States say the bombings shortened the war and saved the lives of numerous U.S. servicemen.

Terumi Tanaka, a native of Nagasaki who was 13 when the bomb hit, said on Thursday an apology for the human suffering would be welcome. Though he was unharmed, he vividly recalls searching the blackened city and piles of bodies for family members.

“We would definitely like an apology to people who lost their lives, those who lost loved ones, parents who lost their children,” Tanaka, who heads a national organisation of bombing survivors, told a news conference.

But insisting on a broad apology risked interfering with the ultimate goal of nuclear disarmament, he said.

“The strongest feeling of survivors is that this should not become a barrier to getting rid of nuclear weapons,” he said.

The bomb dropped on Hiroshima killed thousands of people instantly and about 140,000 by the end of the year. About 27,000 people were killed instantly in Nagasaki and about 70,000 by the end of the year.

Japan surrendered six days after the bombing of Nagasaki.Toshiki Fujimori, who was a baby on his mother’s back when the

two of them were bowled over by the blast wave from the Hiroshima bomb, said he sensed efforts were being made to dampen talk of an apology in advance of Obama’s visit.

“What I mean is, there has been pressure applied to create a mood in which he can visit,” he said.

“I won’t go into details.”Hiroshima governor Hidehiko Yuzaki said Obama’s visit was stirring

a range of emotions in survivors but they were mostly putting hope for nuclear disarmament first.

“Their biggest wish is that they don’t want anybody to go through this again,” he told Reuters.

“In order to carry this out, they’ll put the issue of an apology to the side for now.” (rtr)

Opposition Labor Party leader Bill Shorten labelled Immigration Minister Peter Dutton’s comments “xenophobic”, while refugee ad-vocates such as an Ian Rintoul, a spokesman for the high-profile Refugee Action Coalition, con-demned the comments.

“They want to run a cry of xe-nophobia, they want to undermine the migrant contribution to Australia because they don’t want this election to be about the issues that matter to Australians,” Shorten told reporters.

“The issue is that yesterday migrants were demonised by Peter Dutton, and Malcolm Turnbull backed Peter Dutton over the great immigration history of this coun-try,” Shorten said.

Dutton on Tuesday sparked out-

rage when he said an increase in the annual refugee intake would lead to an influx of uneducated foreigners who would steal jobs from Austra-lian citizens and strain the social safety network.

Border security and immigration are hot political issues in Australia that have swayed past elections and resulted in a bipartisan policy under which asylum seekers arriving by boat are sent to South Pacific island detention camps.

The conservative government last year pledged to take 12,000 refugees from Syria on top of its 13,750 annual quota. The centre-left opposition Labor Party says it will double the annual quota to 27,000 by 2025 if it wins elections on July 2.

Labor and the smaller left-wing opposition Greens Party have seized on Dutton’s comments to paint the government as heartless and divisive, accusing it playing wedge politics.

Labor says it will continue the government’s immigration policy of offshore detention, but Turnbull is seeking to portray the party as weak on immigration and border security.

“Bill Shorten is only interested in the politics of this issue,” Turn-bull said.

Refugee advocate Rintoul said Dutton’s comments were a reaction to the government’s slipping voter support, but added immigration and border security was unlikely to play as well as in the past.

“I think it’s been a serious mis-take and it hasn’t worked for the government at all to play the boat card the way they have in other election cycles,” Rintoul told Reu-ters. (rtr)

Australian PM faces fallout over minister’s ‘xenophobic’ refugee claim

SYDNEY - Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, in the midst of a tight election campaign, came under fire on Thursday for backing his immigration minister over claims resettling “illiterate and innumerate” refugees would strain the social safety network.DENPASAR - In the future, tour

guides in Bali should have certifi-cate on Balinese cultural knowledge or certificate of culture. Likewise, travel agencies should employ tour guides having the certificate. This is also in line with the mandate of the Regional Tourism Development Master Plan of Bali. In this case, it is the right for protection to the sources of cultural tourism.

“That’s why we ask the regional tourism master plan to be included into one of the considerations by referring to the revision of Regional Bylaw on Tour Guides,” said Chair-man of the Special Committee of the Bali House of Representatives on Tour Guide, A.A. Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, in the parliamentary building, Tuesday (May 17).

Adhi Ardhana added that cur-rently he alleged there are many

tour guides from outside Bali or overseas operating in Bali with-out having certificate of culture. Actually it can have impacts on Bali cultural tourism especially when the tour guides are unable to explain about Balinese culture to their guests. On that account, the certificate of Balinese cultural knowledge will become one of the requirements to obtain tour guide identification card (KTPP).

“Implementation of the certifi-cate of Balinese cultural knowledge normatively applies to tour guides submitting for the KTPP. Actually, it should be used to protect the en-tire tour guides working in Bali,” he explained.

Adhi Ardhana added that in line with the cultural certification, it will be coupled with the develop-ment pattern and training. Later

on, the certificate will be issued by the Bali Tourism Office. But so far it remains to be considered by the assessor team to include the gov-ernment, academician, customary village general assembly (MUDP) and tour guide organization.

“Later on, there will be the most appropriate development after we invite all the components,” he ex-plained. If there are still illegal tour guides, said Adhi, his committee will prepare the right formula of penalty to provide a deterrent effect such as imposition of sanctions in the form of maximal six-month im-prisonment and a fine worth IDR 50 million. The nominal fine increases because in the previous regional bylaw on tour guides only applied IDR 30 million. Currently, there are approximately 5,000 tour guides operating in Bali. (kmb32)

Based on data collected by the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency’s there were 647,607 visitors to Bangli in 2014 but in 2015 only 610, 349 tourists (both

foreign and domestic) visited the area. The numbers for the period of January to April of this year show 44,000 visitors per month for a total of 176, 974 visitors

so far this year. The vast major-ity of these tourists 126, 937 to be precise went to Bangli to visit the Penelokan tourist at-traction.

On Wednesday (May 18), Di-vision Head of the Tourist Attrac-tion Development Departemnt for the Bangli Culture and Tourism

Agency, I Wayan Bona, defended the drop in the number of tourists visiting Balngli 2014 to 2015 by saying that this condition was not unique to Bangli but was also the case throughout Bali.

Decreased time for vacations, security issues and natrual disas-ters he added were all contributing

factors.. “Visits by tourists are influenced by a number of factors”, he argued.

Bona then predicted that the number of tourist visist will in-crease this year thanks to efforts that the govenrment has made to improve tourist attractions in Ban-gli. (kmb45)

BUSINESS

NEW YORK — Two-thirds of Ameri-cans would have difficulty coming up with the money to cover a $1,000 emergency, according to an exclusive poll released Thursday, a signal that despite years of recovery from the Great Recession, Americans’ financial conditions remains precarious as ever.

These financial difficulties span all income levels, according to the poll con-ducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Seventy-five percent of people in house-holds making less than $50,000 a year would have difficulty coming up with $1,000 to cover an unexpected bill. But when income rose to between $50,000 and $100,000, the difficulty decreased only modestly to 67 percent.

Even for the country’s wealthiest 20 percent — households making more than $100,000 a year — 38 percent say they would have at least some difficulty com-ing up with $1,000.

“The more we learn about the bal-ance sheets of Americans, it becomes quite alarming,” said Caroline Ratcliffe, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute focusing on poverty and emergency sav-ings issues.

Harry Spangle is one of those Ameri-cans. A 66-year-old former electrician from New Jersey, Spangle said he thought he would always have a job and “lived for today” but lost his job before the down-turn. He said he would have to borrow

from friends or family in order to cover an unexpected $1,000 expense.

“I have a pension and I am on Social Security, but it’s very limiting,” he said. “It’s depressing.”

Having a modest, immediately avail-able emergency fund is widely recognized as critical to financial health. Families that have even a small amount of non-retire-ment savings, between $250 and $749, are less likely to be evicted from their homes and less likely to need public benefits, an Urban Institute study found.

“People are extremely vulnerable if they don’t have savings,” Ratcliffe said. “And it’s a cost to taxpayers as well. Lack of savings can lead to homelessness, or other problems.”

Despite an absence of savings, two-thirds of Americans said they feel positive about their finances , according to survey data released Wednesday by AP-NORC, a sign that they’re managing day-to-day ex-penses fine. The challenge for many often come from economic forces beyond their control such as a dip in the stock market that threatens their job or an unexpected medical bill, risks that have shattered the confidence of most in the broader U.S. economy.

Yet when faced with an unexpected $1,000 bill, a majority of Americans said they wouldn’t be especially likely to pay with money on hand, the AP-NORC sur-vey found. A third said they would have to borrow from a bank or from friends

and family, or put the bill on a credit card. Thirteen percent would skip paying other bills, and 11 percent said they would likely not pay the bill at all.

Those numbers suggest that most American families do not have at least $1,000 stashed away in an accessible savings account, much less under their mattresses, to cover an emergency.

Americans’ struggle to save isn’t new. Three CBS News and The New York Times polls going back to the mid-1990s — the most recent one done in 2007 be-fore the downturn — show a majority of Americans would have some difficulty covering a $1,000 emergency. The AP-NORC results also correlate with a 2015 study by the Federal Reserve in which 47 percent of respondents said they ei-ther could not cover a $400 emergency expense or would have to sell something or borrow money.

And the struggle impacts retirement savings as well. When AP-NORC asked if they will have enough savings to retire when they want to, 54 percent of working Americans say they are not very or not at all confident they will have enough. Only 14 percent say they are confident they can retire on time.

The findings in the AP-NORC poll illu-minate how many Americans’ frustrations over the economy, income inequality and insecurity about their financial futures has contributed to this dizzying presidential election season.(ap)

Economic Planning Secretary Emmanuel Esguerra said the robust performance shows the economy’s continuing high-growth trajectory and increases the likelihood of achieving the official full-year gross do-mestic product growth target of 6.8 to 7.8 percent.

“The next administration and indeed, the next generation, inherits a rapidly growing, vibrant Philippines cushioned by robust foundations built over six years,” said Fi-nance Secretary Cesar Purisima.

The economy grew an average of 6.2 percent over the last six years. The previous quarter growth was 6.5 percent.

Brash-talking Davao city Mayor Ro-drigo Duterte won the May 9 presidential race by a landslide based on an unofficial

count. The new administration takes office on June 30.

Esguerra said it is important not to miss the current wave of foreign investments in the region, where the Philippines is now a destination of choice. Demonstrating the maturity of its democratic institutions, policy consistency and agreement on a long-term vision are important for sustained business confidence, he added.

First quarter growth was driven by the services sector, which grew 7.9 percent and industry, which recorded its highest growth in five consecutive quarters at 8.7 percent, officials said. Investments also surged, with fixed capital posting 25.5 percent growth. Agriculture contracted 4.4 percent, the fourth consecutive quarter of decline.(ap)

SANggAh pamerajan is derived from the words: sanggah, meaning shrine = sanctum; and Pamerajan is derived from Praja = family. So, Sanggah Pamerajan means holy place for a particular family. To sum up, people call it sanggah or merajan. It does not necessarily mean that sanggah only refers to the jaba or non-royal residents, while merajan to tri wangsa. This is really a misunderstanding in the community lasting for a long time and needs to be clarified.

In terms of the type, sanggah pamerajan has three categories, namely: The shrine built in accordance with the concept of Mpu Kuturan applying the concept of Trimurti (trinity), namely the belief in the abode God according to Hindu sacred scripts of Ang - Ung - Mang (AUM = OM) or Brahma,

Vishnu and Shiva, is the position of God in a horizontal orientation, where Brahma in daksina (south), Vishnu in uttara (north) and Shiva in madya (middle).

The shrine built in accordance with the concept of Danghyang Nirarta, applying the Tri Purusha concept namely: the belief in the abode of God accordance with Shiva - Sada Shiva and Parama Shiva, is the position of God in a vertical orientation, where Parama Shiva is the highest. Since it is affected by maya, it then becomes Sada Shiva and Shiva.

Combination of both concepts developed after the fourteenth century, where Padmasa-na or Padmasari shrine remains to be placed in the ’upstream’ while next to it is kemulan shrine.(kmb)

The City of Denpasar’s Council of the Arts is preparing a presentation of “Topeng Panca” for the Mask Parade that will be part the prestigious Bali Arts Festival (PKB) that is in its 38th year. They showed themselves ready during a performance presented to the Province of Bali’s steering committee at Bali Banjar Kehen, in Kesimen Petilan Village, Denpasar last week. Denpasar Topeng Panca’ (five masks) group, Sekaa Gong Kencana Wiguna was given the go ahead to perform in the Bali Arts Festival.

Head of Sekaa Gong Kencana Wiguna, Putu Adi Sujana explained that the theme of this performance was “Pagubangan Warak” or “The blood Spill-ing”. He also explained that the group only had a limited amount of time to rehearse because of the short notice that they were given by the Municipal Government and also because of the difficulty in scheduling rehearsals with members of the group who live far away.

“This is the risk one takes when working with people with experience, on the other hand there is no need to worry about the quality of the work. After this performance we will evaluate the situa-tion based on the directions given by the Provincial committee”, he said.

The group is made all the more interesting be-cause Made Jimat is one of the organisers. Jimat is widely admired by the public for having played a pivotal role in the development of the Topeng Keras and Torpeng Arsa Wijaya masked dances. Also, Mayor of Denpasar representative IGN Jayanegara along with City of Denpasar’s Departement of Cul-ture representative Dra. Ni Nyoman Sujati, MM are also giving their full spport to Sekaa Gong Kencana Wiguna. (kmb)

In Paris, Hollande also said the cause remained unknown. “Unfor-tunately the information we have ... confirms to us that the plane came down and is lost,” he said. “No hypothesis can be ruled out, nor can any be favoured over another.”

With its archeological sites and Red Sea resorts, Egypt is tradi-tionally a popular destination for Western tourists. But the industry has been badly hit following the downing of the Russian Metrojet flight last October, killing all 224 people on board, as well as by an Islamist insurgency and a string of bomb attacks.

NO RESPONSEGreek air traffic controllers

spoke to the pilot as the jet flew over the island of Kea, in what was thought to be the last broadcast from the aircraft, and no problems were reported. But just ahead of the handover to Cairo airspace, calls to the plane went unanswered, before it dropped off radars shortly

after exiting Greek airspace, Kostas Litzerakis, the head of Greece’s civil aviation department, told Reuters.

“During the transfer procedure to Cairo airspace, about seven miles before the aircraft entered the Cairo airspace, Greek controllers tried to contact the pilot but he was not responding,” he said.

Greek authorities are searching in the area south of the island of Karpathos without result so far, Defence Minister Kammenos told a news conference.

“At 3.39am (0039 GMT) the course of the aircraft was south and south-east of Kassos and Karpathos (islands),” he said. “Im-mediately after, it entered Cairo FIR (flight information region) and made swerves and a descent I describe: 90 degrees left and then 360 degrees to the right.” The Airbus plunged from 37,000 feet (11,280 metres) to 15,000 feet before vanishing from radar, he added. Egyptian Civil Aviation minister Sherif Fathi said authori-ties had tried to resume contact but without success. (rtr)

The incident, likely to increase tension in and around the con-tested waterway, took place in international airspace on Tuesday as the U.S. maritime patrol aircraft carried out “a routine U.S. patrol,” a Pentagon statement said.

The encounter comes a week after China scrambled fighter jets as a U.S. Navy ship sailed close to a disputed reef in the South China Sea.

Another Chinese intercept took place in 2014 when a Chinese fighter pilot flew acrobatic maneu-

vers around a U.S. spy plane. The intercept occurred days

before President Barack Obama travels to parts of Asia from May 21-28, including a Group of Seven summit in Japan and his first trip to Vietnam.

China claims most of the South China Sea, through which $5 tril-lion in ship-borne trade passes every year. The Philippines, Viet-nam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have overlapping claims.

Washington has accused Bei-jing of militarizing the South

China Sea after creating artificial islands, while Beijing, in turn, has criticized increased U.S. naval patrols and exercises in Asia.

The Pentagon statement said the Department of Defense was addressing the issue through mili-tary and diplomatic channels.

China’s Fore ign Min i s t ry spokesman Hong Lei said the U.S. statement was “not true” and that the aircraft had been engaging in reconnaissance close to China’s island province of Hainan.

“It must be pointed out that U.S. military planes frequently carry out reconnaissance in Chi-nese coastal waters, seriously endangering Chinese maritime security,” Hong told reporters at a regular press briefing on Thursday.

“We demand that the United States immediately cease this type of close reconnaissance activity to avoid having this sort of incident happening again,” Hong said, add-ing that the actions of the Chinese aircraft were “completely in keep-ing with safety and professional standards”.

“They maintained safe behavior and did not engage in any danger-ous action,” Hong said.

China’s Defense Ministry said in a fax that it was looking into reports on the incident.

The Pentagon has yet to re-lease the precise location of the encounter.

In 2015, the United States and China announced agreements on a military hotline and rules of be-havior to govern air-to-air encoun-ters called the Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea (CUES).

“This is exactly the type of irresponsible and dangerous in-tercepts that the air-to-air annex to CUES is supposed to prevent,” said Greg Poling, director of the Asia Maritime Transparency Ini-tiative at Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies think-tank.

Poling said either some part of China’s airforce “hadn’t gotten the message”, or it was meant as a sig-nal of displeasure with recent U.S. freedom of navigation actions in the South China Sea. (rtr)

TAIPEI - Taiwan’s new ruling party is set for an early clash with China over the first major item on its legislative agenda - a bill that could paralyse trade between the two rivals and which Beijing has already condemned.

The proposed “supervision law” has not only angered China, which views self-ruled Taiwan as a breakaway province, but sent shivers through the island’s busi-ness community which thinks the government should put the economy before politics.

Incoming president Tsai Ing-wen has made the bill, spurred by anti-China student protests in 2014, a priority for her govern-ment, which will be sworn in on Friday.

The bill requires government officials to get legislative consent before, during and after any talks with Beijing. They cannot sign any agreements with China before all three stages of legislative ap-proval are completed.

“We are very worried,” said Liao Wan-lung, head of Taiwan’s Council for Industrial and Com-mercial Development. “It will be a major blow to the growth of Taiwan’s fragile economy.”

Tsai’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won parliamentary and presidential elections by a landslide in January in a voter backlash against a trade pact with China that the previous National-ist government had sought to push through.

The independence-leaning

DPP is distrustful of growing economic dependence on China and Chinese cultural influence. Supporters of the bill say it will add transparency to negotiations.

Economic ties warmed consid-erably when Ma Ying-jeou of the Nationalists was elected president in 2008, ushering in regular high-level exchanges and overseeing landmark economic deals.

Critics of bill say it will stall, rather than ease, the relation-ship with the world’s second-largest economy. A spokesman for China’s top agency in charge of handling Taiwan affairs said in March that anything that “puts up man-made blocks” on ties with Taiwan would be absolutely opposed.

Liao and other business leaders fear the DPP is prioritising sover-eignty at the expense of trade.

The bill governs all matters related to China, Taiwan’s biggest export market. Taiwan’s trade-reliant economy is struggling to shake off last year’s recession as prolonged weakness in global demand weighs on Asian export-ers.

Communist Party leaders in Beijing have not ruled out using force to bring democratic Taiwan under their control. They are deeply distrustful of the DPP, whose charter includes a clause promoting “a sovereign and inde-pendent Republic of Taiwan”. Tsai however has stressed she intends to “maintain the status quo” with China. (rtr)

SOCHI - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin witnessed the signing of five memoranda of understand-ing (MoUs) on bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Russia, here, Wednesday evening. The MoUs include cooperation in defense, illegal fishing eradication, cultural exchange, and archival cooperation.

From the Indonesian side, the MoUs were signed by Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Mar-sudi, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, and Head of the National Archive Agency Mustari Irawan.

Prior to the signing of the MoUs, Jokowi and Putin held a bilateral meeting to discuss economic issues and efforts to strengthen political and defense cooperation. At a joint press conference, Jokowi stated that the two countries had also agreed to boost Russian investment in Indonesia, particularly in the fields of maritime, infrastructure, oil and gas, energy, and electricity.

The Indonesian head of state also empha-sized the importance of including the transfer of technology and weapon purchase as part of the defense cooperation. The two leaders also discussed cooperation in military exercise, education, and joint production.

Indonesia has urged Russia to ease tariff and non-tariff barriers for Indonesian palm oil exports to the country. President Putin informed the press that Russia was keen on expanding cooperation in the energy field with Indonesia.

“There is good potential for expanding en-

ergy cooperation. Our companies --- Zarube-zhneft and Rosneft --- have specific, serious large-scale projects, including the construction of a modern oil refinery on Java Island, with a possible investment of US$13 billion,” Putin revealed.

“Plans also include the construction of a 1.8-gigawatt thermal power station, with contribution from our company InterRAO and an investment of $2.8 billion. Rosatom is working on a project to build an experimental low-power reactor,” he added. Putin also noted that Russia was ready to provide all necessary assistance to its Indonesian partners for imple-menting infrastructure projects.

“Significant in this context is a joint project that was launched last year: a 190-kilometer-long railway line in Kalimantan, to be built by our company Russian Railways in conjunction with its partners. The project will create over 2.5 thousand jobs,” Putin noted.

The railway line will connect the resource-rich part of the island to a new port and industrial and technological cluster where manufacturing and processing enterprises will be located, also with a share of Russian capital, he explained. Cooperation plans also include the development of coal fields, the production of ferronickel, manganese dioxide, alumina, and more.

“Our companies are ready to provide Indone-sia with high-speed hydrofoil vessels, catama-rans, and floating piers and to supply modern equipment for the satellite monitoring of vessels. We have agreed to continue our collaboration in civil aviation,” the Russian president remarked. Jokowi is in Sochi to attend the ASEAN-Russia Summit on May 19-20. (ant)

JAKARTA - The Indonesian govern-ment is committed to resolve all human rights cases in Papua by the end of this year, a senior minister said here on Wednesday.

“I am optimistic that the human rights cases in Papua will be settled this year. The people of Papua also wish to settle the cases (and) the government will facilitate it,” coordinating minister for political, security and legal affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said.

He informed that he would also involve the commander of the defense forces (TNI) in the efforts to settle the cases. “I do not care about the identity of the perpetrators. We will disclose all the existing information and the identity of whoever is wrong, and we will punish him,” he declared.

A commissioner of the National Commission on Human Rights, Imdadul Rahmat, has said that resolving these cases should become the long-term com-mitment of all parties.

“They must commit to enforce human rights in Papua so that such cases do not recur. There must be more approaches for a dialogue to deal with political sta-bility in Papua so that Papua can enjoy

real and everlasting peace acceptable to all,” he explained.

He advised that the settlement of the 12 human rights cases in Papua by the government by the end of this year must also comprehensively cover other aspects, besides social and political, such as land rights, traditional community rights and the welfare of the people of Papua.

All the parties involved must be in unison with the government so that no institution later claims it had a different view on the matter.

“Such commitment must be enforced through law. We must not do things in a half-hearted fashion. We have often said that we carry no burden. We must remain open,” he argued.

The settlement of the human rights cases in Papua is very important. Rahmat stated that besides proving that Indone-sia is more democratic, such a move is necessary to safeguard the integrity of the unitary state of Indonesia.

“Each case takes its own time to reach a solution and faces its own peculiar set of difficulties. We wish all such cases are settled this year,” he explained. (ant)

JAKARTA - A Nigerian citizen has been sentenced to 20 years in jail and fined Rp1.2 billion for facilitating nar-cotic drug distribution.

“Arinze was proven to have conspired to commit an evil act by becoming a fa-cilitator in the distribution of Category I narcotic drug,” chief judge of the West Jakarta district court, Bambang Mursito, said while reading out the verdict here on Wednesday.

In view of that, the panel of judges that had considered all the facts dis-closed during the sessions, sentenced him to 20 years in jail and imposed a fine of Rp1.2 billion. If he fails to pay the fiine, he will have to serve six months more in jail.

Upon hearing the verdict, the state prosecutor, Nugraha, said he was yet to make up his mind whether to accept it or not. The prosecutor had asked for a death sentence.

Through his lawyer, Arinze Petrus Eneh said he was satisfied with the judges decision but said he, too, has to decide whether to appeal. “In prin-ciple, we are satisfied with the verdict. However, we would think and consider

about appealing it,” the lawyer, Dolfie Rompas, said.

Arinze alias Zona, along with Tuti Sudartika alias Dede Rosa and Rojali Pajar Saputra (the two were tried under different dossiers), were involved in a case of illegal possession of 6.3 kilo-grams of methamphetamine.

Arinze, who is currently being held at Salemba Penitentiary in Central Jakarta in a narcotic case still under judicial pro-cess, was ordered by a man named John (still at large) to pick up narcotic drug from China and bring it to Indonesia. He then asked Tuti and Rojali, (earlier informed by David, at large) to carry out the job.

The drug, weighing 6.3 kilograms, was smuggled in a thermos flask through a Covenant Logistic expedition in Ceng-kareng, West Jakarta, and then kept in a kiosk in Cibinong, Bogor, West Java.

The state prosecutor has charged all the suspects with violation of Law Num-ber 35 of 2009 on narcotics because they attempted to commit an evil act of smug-gling a narcotic substance by becoming facilitators in the distribution of drugs and therefore deserved a death penalty. (ant)

LONDON - Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte swam to European 100 metres breaststroke gold on Wednesday in the same London pool where, in 2012, she burst into the limelight as a 15-year-old Olympic champion.

The British-based world record holder, who underwent surgery late last year after breaking her elbow in a cycling accident, won comfort-ably in one minute 6.17 seconds.

“It’s great to be here again. It’s an absolutely amazing pool and it’s always going to be special for me,” she told reporters after the first long-course European title of her career.

“I’m happy to post some consistent times, being in hard training still and unrested it’s very good for me. Hopefully we can learn some things from this race and carry it out to Rio.”

The 19-year-old, who lives in the south-west English city of Plym-outh, said the injury had been a big setback in her preparations for the Rio Olympics but the recovery had been faster than expected.

Meilutyte was beaten at the 2015 world championships by Rus-sian Yulia Efimova, currently suspended after testing positive for Meldonium.

In the world champion’s absence, Iceland’s Hrafnhildu Luthersdottir was her closest rival and took silver with Britain’s Chloe Tutton the bronze medallist.

Another 2012 Olympic champion, Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands, had to settle for silver in the women’s 100 metres free-style.

Sweden’s reigning European champion Sarah Sjoestrom won in 52.82 seconds, a time that would have been good for Olympic gold four years ago, with Kromowidjojo second in 53.24 and team mate Femke Heemskerk taking bronze.

“I hate losing, the Olympics will be a new and a different race and I’m on a good way to Rio,” Kromowidjojo said.

World champion Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy earlier swam the second fastest men’s 1,500 metres freestyle of all time to defend his title.

The 21-year-old won in 14:34.04 to shatter his own European record, set at last year’s world championships in Russia, by 5.63 seconds.

Only China’s Olympic champion Sun Yang, who won gold in the same pool in 2012 with a world record 14:31.02, has swum faster in the distance and Paltrinieri was inside that pace until the last 100 metres.

“This time is incredible,” he said after a swim that put him firmly in contention for gold in Rio. “I can’t believe I was able to swim here so fast as we have been working very hard in training.”

Greece’s Andreas Vazaios won the men’s 200 metres individual medley gold in a national record of 1:58.18 while Sebastiaan Ver-schuren of the Netherlands took 200 metres freestyle gold.

Britain’s James Guy, the 200 free world champion who is in heavy training, was third. (rtr)

Eleven days ago, Mexican Al-varez improved his career record to 47-1-1 with 33 knockouts when he stopped Britain’s Amir Khan in the sixth round of their title bout at the T-Mobile Arena.

Immediately after that fight, Alvarez invited WBA and IBF champion Golovkin of Kazakhstan into the ring, fuelling the growing clamour for a clash between the two, and on Wednesday the Mexi-can confirmed that negotiations were under way.

“Today, I instructed my team at Golden Boy Promotions to continue negotiating a fight with Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and to finalise a deal as quickly as possible,” Alvarez, 25, said in a

statement.“I also informed the WBC that I

will vacate its title. For the entirety of my career, I have taken the fights that no one wanted because I fear no man.

“Never has that been more true than today. I will fight ‘GGG’ and I will beat ‘GGG’ but I will not be forced into the ring by artificial deadlines.”

Alvarez, who claimed the WBC middleweight crown with a unani-mous decision over Miguel Cotto in November, had been given a May 22 deadline by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman to start negotia-tions with Golovkin or instead be stripped of the belt.

“I am hopeful that by putting

aside this ticking clock, the two teams can now negotiate this fight, and ‘GGG’ and I can get in the ring as soon as possible and give the fans the fight they want to see,” said Alvarez.

Kazakhstani Golovkin, 34, is an aggressive counter-puncher who holds the IBO and WBC middle-weight belts and boasts a remark-able 35-0 record that includes 32 knockouts.

In his most recent fight on April 23 at The Forum in Inglewood, California, he flattened challenger Dominic Wade in the second round to post his 22nd consecutive knock-out.

The prospect of a matchup be-tween power hitter Alvarez, whose only loss in 49 professional fights was to undefeated American Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013, and the always aggressive Golovkin is certainly one to savour for boxing fans. (rtr)

PROPERTYTheir title meant that, with Real

Madrid and Atletico Madrid clashing in next week’s Champions League final, Spanish clubs will have won both European competitions for each of the last three seasons.

Eight of the last 13 teams to win the Europa League have come from Spain, with Sevilla victorious five times, while the Champions League will go to a La Liga side for the fifth time in eight seasons.

Sevilla coach Unai Emery also joined Giovanni Trapattoni as they only manager to have won the Eu-ropa League, or its predecessor the UEFA Cup, three times.

Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp had praised Spanish clubs on the eve of the match, saying they had better scouting, coaches and player devel-opment than their English, German and Italian equivalents. “Maybe, it’s

not for us to say it, others should analyse,” Emery told reporters.

“I have my own theory. Perhaps, the standard of Spanish football is very good. But is has also been proved that Spanish teams compete passionately. They are able to reach highest levels of European football and we have been able to win against teams better than us.”

Unlike Real Madrid and Barcelo-na, who cherry-pick the world’s top players, Sevilla are a more modest outfit who have successfully carved a niche for themselves.

They bear more of a resemblance to Portuguese teams Benfica and Porto in the way that they manage to reinvent themselves season after season, despite selling their top play-ers to richer clubs.

Those to have left the club over the last five seasons include Car-

los Bacca, Ivan Rakitic, Alberto Moreno, Alvaro Negredo, Jesus Navas, Geoffroy Kondogbia, Gary Medel and Martin Caceres. Yet, expert scouting has enabled them to fill the gaps.

English teams often regard the Europa League as a nuisance which clutters up the fixture list, preferring to concentrate on qualifying for the Champions League by finishing in the top four of the Premier League.

Sevilla, with little hope of win-ning La Liga where they have fin-ished fifth in the last two seasons, have realised that it represents a real chance of silverware as well as a back door to the Champions League.

“The Europa League has given us a lot,” Emery said. “At Sevilla, we love this competition. It is our competition and we have underlined that once and again. The Champions League is an opportunity to imrpove but the reality is this competition is growing.” (ap)

BARCELONA — Barcelona says the Spanish government’s ban on Catalonia’s separatist flags dur-ing the Copa del Rey final is “an attack on freedom of expression.” The club released a statement expressing its “total and complete disagreement” with the announce-ment made Wednesday, four days before the final against Sevilla in Madrid.

Barcelona says it’s an attack “on the fundamental right of each and every individual to express their

ideas and opinions freely and with-out censorship.”

Officials said the ban of the po-litically charged flags was approved as part of security measures being implemented for the game at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, the home of Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona called for “the use of common sense” and demanded the government to “respect the honor of the institutions involved and to avoid causing any uncomfortable situations.” (ap)

LONDON - Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal goes into the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace on Saturday facing echoes of the 1990 showpiece between the two sides that proved so pivotal in the career of Alex Ferguson.

Ferguson’s United were strug-gling in the 1989-90 season and the clamour was growing for the manager’s dismissal, but the FA Cup win in a replay over Palace gave the Scotsman a reprieve.

He went on to build a dynasty that won 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies, alongside a host of domestic cups.

Van Gaal, who took charge in May 2014 and guided United to fourth in his first season, is under similar pressure after his side fin-ished fifth in the Premier League and dropped out of the Champions

League in the group stages. The Dutchman has been ac-

cused of moving United away from United’s traditional brand of attack-ing football to a more laboured style, which yielded the second fewest goals of the league’s top 10 teams this term.

The 64-year-old was booed by some fans during his end-of-season speech after Tuesday’s final 3-1 win over Bournemouth at Old Trafford. Speculation is rife over his future, but the former Ajax Amsterdam, Barce-lona and Bayern Munich manager is adamant he will remain, irrespective of what happens at Wembley.

“Yes, because I have signed a three-year contract,” he told report-ers. Van Gaal understands the fans’ disappointment, but says they should be realistic as United chase their first FA Cup title since 2004 and their first

major trophy since the 2013 Premier League. “The expectation is very high. Too high. We are a team in transition,” Van Gaal said. “I have tried to explain that.

“We didn’t reach our aim. We have to qualify for the Champions League. We have still the FA Cup final to go. Everyone has to make up his mind at how we have done this season at that time.”

Crystal Palace, who finished the Premier League five points above the relegation zone, are in the final for the first time since losing the 1990 replay 1-0 following a 3-3 draw in the first match.

“I remember Sir Alex’s career hinged on that game and maybe LVG’s career will hinge on this,” said Palace boss Alan Pardew, who played for Palace in the final 26 years ago. (rtr)

BURTON ON TRENT — The English Football Association says it will take “appropriate ac-tion” after a member of the public wearing an England training uni-form ran onto the field Thursday during the national team’s first practice session ahead of the European Championship.

The man entered during a drinks break from an area con-taining invited spectators at England’s training base at St.

George’s Park, kicking balls toward an empty net before walking off and being grabbed by a steward as he returned to the stand. England’s players did not appear concerned by the intruder.

The FA said condemned “this unacceptable behavior”, adding that the man was the son of an invited Club Wembley member. Euro 2016 will be held in France from June 10-July 10. (ap)

NEW YORK — The long-time former head of the Nicara-guan soccer federation who most recently was employed by FIFA pleaded not guilty to racketeer-ing charges Wednesday after he became the last of seven men extradited after their arrests in Zurich last year.

Julio Rocha, 65, entered the plea in Brooklyn federal court through his lawyer, William Sullivan.

Rocha was the last of seven men, including two FIFA vice presidents, to be extradited after a raid last May in Zurich exposed what officials described as a sprawling bribery scheme that had infested the governing body of international soccer. Six were extradited to the United States and one man was extradited to Uruguay.

Rocha was freed on $1.5 mil-lion bail after agreeing to submit to electronic monitoring and stay at a Florida residence until trial. Friends and family, some in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas, were expected to sign his bond, posting homes, stock and cash to back it up. He also was banned from communicating with various FIFA entities or their affiliates. Outside court, Rocha’s attorney declined com-ment.

The bespectacled defendant, wearing a black coat, spoke to Magistrate Judge Robert M. Levy through an interpreter, asking at

one point if he had to return to New York for future court pro-ceedings. Levy told him the case was based there so he would.

“You must be a little tired,” Levy told him after he was ac-companied on his flight from Zurich to New York by U.S. law enforcement officials.

Rocha was the longtime Ni-caraguan soccer federation presi-dent before leaving in 2012. That was when FIFA hired him as a Panama-based development of-ficer for Central America.

Rocha’s final appeal against a U.S. extradition request was re-jected by Switzerland’s supreme court on May 9.

A Brooklyn indictment said Rocha received a $100,000 bribe from sports marketing company Traffic linked to the sale of mar-keting rights for Nicaragua’s qualifying matches for the 2018 World Cup.

The indic tment a l leged $150,000 was wired in May 2011 from a bank in Miami to an account in Rocha’s name at a bank in Madrid, Spain. He kept $100,000 and gave $50,000 to an-other sports official who was not identified, authorities alleged.

Rocha is among more than 40 soccer and marketing officials and marketing agencies to have been indicted or to have pleaded guilty in the United States since charges were unsealed in May 2015. The scandal initially left FIFA in turmoil. (ap)

(rtr)

(ant)

(kmb)

(kmb45)

(dwa)

Luke.

Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail announced a search was un-der way for the missing Airbus A320 but it was too early to rule out any explanation, including an attack like the one blamed for bringing down a Russian airliner over Egypt’s Sinai peninsula last year.

Officials with the airline and the Egyptian civil aviation department told Reuters they believed the Airbus had crashed into the Mediterranean between Greece and Egypt. In Athens, Greek Defence Minister Panos Kam-menos said the Airbus had first swerved 90 degrees to the left, then spun through 360 degrees to the right. After plunging from 37,000 feet to 15,000, it vanished from Greek radar screens.

Greece deployed aircraft and a frigate to the area to help with the search. A defence ministry source said authorities were also investigat-ing an account from the captain of a merchant ship who reported a ‘flame in the sky’ about 130 nautical miles south of the island of Karpathos.

According to Greece’s civil aviation chief, calls from Greek air traffic controllers to the jet went un-answered just before it left the coun-try’s airspace, and it disappeared from radar screens soon afterwards. By early afternoon, the search in the Mediterranean had yet to turn up

anything. “Absolutely nothing has been found so far,” a senior Greek coastguard official told Reuters.

There was no official sugges-tion of whether the disappearance was due to technical failure or any other reason such as sabotage by ultra-hardline Islamists, who have targeted airports, airliners and tour-ist sites in Europe, Egypt, Tunisia and other Middle Eastern countries over the past few years.

The aircraft was carrying 56 passengers - with one child and two infants among them - and 10 crew, EgyptAir said. They included 30 Egyptian and 15 French nationals, along with citizens of 10 other coun-tries. Asked if he could rule out that terrorists were behind the incident, Prime Minister Ismail told reporters: “We cannot exclude anything at this time or confirm anything. All the search operations must be concluded so we can know the cause.”

DENPASAR - The Government of Bali has recently submitted a draft of a regional bylaw (Ranperda) on the Implementation of

Road Traffic and Trans-

portation (LLAJ) to Bali’s House of Representatives. The House has already established a special committee who made a working visit to East Java on Wednesday (May 18). The Special Committee for Road Traffic and Transportation assessed that regulating the age of vehicles that

can operate on the roads of Bali would be beneficial.

“There will be a restriction placed on the permissible age of vehicles. Based on our study, although vehcicles of up to 25 years old are still being considered for validation, we propose that this age limit is debatable”,

said Chairman of the Special Committee for Road Traffic and Transportation, I.B. Udiyana, by telephone during his working visit to Java.
