Authorities had predict- ed that any debris from the plane that isn’t on the ocean floor would eventually be carried by currents to the east coast of Africa. The movie follows on from the 2010 box office hit “Alice in Wonderland”, which starred Depp alongside Australian actress Mia Wasikowska as the titular heroine and Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen.

“It’s a lot of fun to revisit the Mad Hatter,” Depp told reporters

at the movie’s London premiere on Tuesday night.

“It was a gas to get back together with the cast of before, and then the addition of Sacha Baron Cohen certainly upped the stakes quite a lot ... It was great because this par-ticular film .... has a bit more of the Hatter - there are a lot more layers

of things going on.”Cohen, known for his satirical

characters Ali G, Kazakh reporter Borat and Austrian fashionista Bruno, joins the cast as new villain, Time, in the sequel, which looks at the Mad Hatter’s traumatic child-hood. The plot follows Alice as she rushes to reunite the Mad Hatter and his family while battling Time and the Red Queen.

FILE - In this Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, file photo, a waiter walks past a mural of flight MH370 in Shah Alam outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The aircraft mysteriously disap-peared more than two years ago with 239 people on board, and so far an extensive underwater search of a vast area of the Indian Ocean off Australia’s west coast has turned up empty.

In addition, according to him, it is a dilemma for Bali tourism be-cause currently Bali also becomes a destination of international crimes. Therefore, the awareness of com-munity and tourism components is needed in order to prevent Bali from being a destination of inter-national crimes.

Furthermore, Alit Wiraputra revealed that many foreigners live and stay in Bali. They do not stay not at hotel, but in a boarding house or rent people’s house. Actually, their existence and activities should be monitored. On that account, it is necessary for the community, gov-ernment and the apparatus to know and to have accurate data base about the presence of foreigners living and working on this island.

“We are quite worried about their influence in tourism. Howev-er, we expect that foreign travelers will not be afraid of visiting Bali because of it,” he said.

Admittedly so far he did not yet see the impact and hoped this situ-ation will not be utilized as a black campaign by the competitors of Bali to reduce tourist arrivals to the Island of Thousand Temples.

In the meantime, the number of foreigners getting involved in criminal cases continues to rise. “They are involved in a variety of cases, become the victim and die. Originally they come from several countries,” said Spokesman of Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto, accompa-nied by subdivision head of public information Sri Harmiti.

The foreigners getting involved in crimes are from Switzerland,

Germany, India, England, Austra-lia, the US, Russia, France, Ireland, China and Taiwan. Their cases include in firearms, traffic acci-dents, persecution, claiming other’s home, document forgery, narcotics, fraud, attempt of rape, motorcycle gangs and cybercrime.

Several wanted fugitives of Interpol are arrested in Bali, in-cluding the alleged mastermind of dozens of murder cases in India,

Ranjedra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Mohan Kumar, Antonino Messicati Vitale getting involved in a murder case in Italy, Vontrey Jamal Clark aka Trey Clark aka Vontrey Clark aka Treezy aka Tray, a US citizen getting involved in a murder case in the United States.

Hundreds of Chinese and Tai-wanese citizens were arrested in several villas in Badung and Denpasar for their involvement in cybercrime cases and were pursued by Interpol of China. As the data compiled at the Bali Police, from 2012 to 2015 a total of 438 foreign-ers were named the suspects, 591 people became the victims and 246 people died.

Related the drug abuse and drug trafficking in Bali, it is alleged there is contribution of foreigners. At least the drug syndicates wishing to supply illicit goods to Bali are controlled by foreigners. It was revealed by Chief of Bali National Narcotic Agency (BNNP), Putu Gede Suastawa.

Pursuant to the data compiled at the BNNP Bali, from 2010 to 2014 a total of 88 foreigners were arrested as getting involved in drug cases. Most arrests of the suspect occurred in 2011 reaching 24 people.

To divert the attention of law

enforcement officials, foreigners take advantage of local people. As consequence, the officers will be difficult to supervise which for-eigners are indeed to spend holiday, do business or get involved in drug syndicate. According to Suastawa, many foreigners are drug users and Bali is also used a transit point for drug smuggling. (rah)

SEMARAPURA— Having been launched on the celebration of the anniversary of Puputan Klungkung and the town of Semarapura, the government of Klungkung began to assemble relevant agencies to resolve the issues impeding the implementa-tion of the city tour in Klungkung. As planned, the city tour program still needs finalizing related to prepared-ness of management and concept in the future. Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, requested the city

tour program can be managed by professional body.

When met at his office, Regent Suwirta revealed that he is trying to move quickly to immediately realize this city tour program. It is carried out by summoning relevant agencies for the implementation of the city tour such as the Culture and Tourism, Communication and Infocom as well as the Trade and Industry, SME Cooperative Agency. “We still need to finalize

this intensively so that we ask for the commitment of each agency,” he said, Wednesday (May 11).

He requested the management of city tour can be worked on profes-sionally so that the government of Klungkung will not interfere too much in the management. He also suggested the management must be conducted by a management body. Thus, it needs for rules underlying the formation of the management.

Regent Suwirta added that the

regional enterprise owned by the government of Klungkung has the potential to manage the city tour. However, prior to handing over the management to it, it is required the support of the agencies for the provi-sion of facilities and infrastructure such as conceptualizing the Puputan Square as the courtyard of the Klung-kung Grand Palace. “Yes, the system must be prepared first before handing over to regional enterprise. After handing over the assets, it is ready to

be managed,” he explained.Regent Suwirta recognized that

managing this city tour is the first time for the government of Klung-kung so that it needs to be equipped with mature concept, mainly re-lated to the performance assess-ment whether it will be determined based on target to be met. “So far we have never managed it, but we will try so that the management is not complicated and we do not want it,” he concluded. The Head of the Buleleng Cul-ture and Tourism Agency, Nyoman Sutrisna, attempted to preserve the culture of Buleleng through the BAF Buleleng on May 27-30. The

activity is centered at open stage or the former Buleleng Harbor with a variety of art performances. “A variety of distinctive arts of North Bali will be performed such as

Gong Kebyar and Joged Bumbung. Women Gong Kebyar, Kid Gong Kebyar, drama gong and joged parade will be presented,” he said, Wednesday (May 11).

He explained that the draft of the BAF preparation is made to at-tract local and foreign tourist visit. Performance of the BAF Buleleng is different from previous imple-mentations with the theme karang

awak: ‘loving the homeland.’ “The stage is located at the former Bule-leng Harbor coupled with some additional attractions such as paint-ing exhibition, culinary pavilion of Buleleng and other activities to enliven the BAF,” he said.

The preparation through guid-ance has been provided for the representatives that will appear in the BAF. Dissemination of the

program to villages will be final-ized again next May 14. The art of Gong Kebyar was born in Buleleng and then spread out and expanded to other regions. “The BAF is ex-pected to boost local and foreign tourist visit. We target the tourist arrival to reach 700,000 people to Buleleng this year. Hopefully, it can be reached gradually,” he said. (kmb34)

People familiar with the dis-cussions say part of the reason his seat is still vacant is the limited control offered by the 70-year-old label compared with similar roles at rivals such as Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci and Coach.

“Often when a creative direc-tor leaves, it is because he did not get enough control,” said one fashion communications guru who has worked for big brands including Givenchy, and who declined to be named.

Simons is expected to get much more leeway at Calvin Klein, part of PVH Corp, where he should start working in a few months, fashion industry sources have said.

Adding to its woes, Dior’s sales growth has stalled in re-cent months, reflecting a fall in tourism to Europe after the Paris and Brussels attacks and weaker demand in some key Asian markets.

Main shareholder Bernard Arnault, France’s richest man, wants a proven quantity to steer the label famous for its cinch-waisted Bar jacket, head-hunters

and fashion executives say, but the talent pool of potential re-placements is small.

A further problem is that most designers are prevented by their contracts from working for a rival for up to a year.

Candidates who have been se-riously considered include Alber Elbaz, credited with resuscitat-ing the Lanvin brand but sacked in October after trying to bring in external investors.

But Elbaz was put off in part by the limited scope of the Dior job, having been in charge of everything from collections to advertising at Lanvin, sources close to the designer said.

There was also Hedi Slimane, who was creative director at Yves Saint Laurent until last month. Slimane’s track record of seeking to gradually increase his control over every facet of a brand, as he did at YSL, meant Dior could not strike a deal with him either, fashion sources said.

To replace Simons, several people pointed to Maria Grazia Chiuri who currently designs

alongside Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino, one of the luxury in-dustry’s fastest growing brands. A move would make her the first woman to design womenswear for Dior but complicate Valen-tino’s plans to float in 2017.

One source close to Dior confirmed Chiuri was a potential candidate but stressed her name was on a list that also included internal applicants. The source said the hiring process was likely to take some time, possibly a few more weeks.

Valentino and Dior declined to comment.

SUBTLE MIXThere is no set formula when

hiring a new creative director, fashion executives and head-hunters say. The requirements and expectations vary greatly depend-ing on the brand’s size, history and whether it is looking for continuity or a creative reboot.

Dior’s desire for someone charismatic and current, with a strong vision but who will be happy to be confined to a rela-tively narrow role, could be a tall order, several fashion industry sources said, speaking on condi-tion of anonymity.

The Dior job entails design-ing collections and some acces-

sories, producing six fashion shows a year, giving interviews and representing the brand at events.

It does not extend into re-vamping boutiques, many of which are designed by Peter Marino, major changes to the Lady Dior handbag or med-dling with Dior’s advertising for perfume and beauty products, which generate the bulk of its 5 billion euros ($5.67 billion) in annual sales.

Quitting Dior, Simons said he wanted to focus on his own label and his personal life, but some in the industry say his intellectual and minimalist style did not sit comfortably with the brand’s flamboyant image. In one famous ad campaign, a gold-lame-clad Charlize Theron struts through Versailles Palace to promote J’adore perfume, one of the world’s best-sellers.

“The problem is that when you are a brand the size of Dior, you have its heritage on the one hand, the designer’s world on the other, and then you also have all these many different types of women you want to seduce with the help of celebrity adverts,” said a fashion manager at one of the industry’s biggest groups. YOU know how when you learn a new word, you suddenly seem to hear it everywhere? Fashion trends are like that too. Read a story about how bandanas are a thing, and suddenly you notice that every other girl on Instagram and in your brunch spot is tying one on.

The same can be said for the off-shoul-der bikini trend — you know, the ruffled crop top and bikini bottom combo we’re suddenly spotting on celebs from Krysten Ritter to Selena Gomez. (I am officially dubbing this style the “flamenkini” because the flouncy top looks like something a flamenco dancer would wear and because I like a good portmanteau.)

For a month or two now, my co-worker Lauren has been pinging me every time she spots a flamenkini in the wild, with notes like, “This would definitely fall off in the ocean and give you the weirdest tan lines.” And she’s right — the Rosie Assoulin-inspired off-shoulder top isn’t the easiest thing to wear on the street and makes even less sense on the beach, where straps are the only thing standing between you and a very awkward moment. And yet, thanks to designers like Lisa Marie Fernandez and her celeb fans, these suits are quickly becoming ubiquitous — and they seem to get cuter every time we spot one.

Interested in trying this adorably gravity-tempting style? We found eight versions at every price point ahead. Click on, and make sure your hands are free — you might need ‘em to keep this top in place. (IBP/net)

Dior struggles to find the right fit in its search for a designer

PARIS - Christian Dior, one of the world’s biggest and most famous fashion brands, is struggling to find a creative director more than six months after the abrupt departure of Raf Simons.

Met on Wednesday (May 11), Ahmad Dewasa admitted that his position is the closest to the sea. “I fled the earliest. Later on, the other people around here will also move,” he said when met at the sidelines of dismantling his house at Ketapang hamlet, Pengambengan.

He has become the victim of

abrasion for two times. Previously, his first house was also damaged by the same disaster. For the new location, he said, he will move to the land given by the government of Jembrana when the first house was destroyed by abrasion.

He moved and rented a piece of land at the location because he did

not think the abrasion will reach his house. “In fact, only about three years, the abrasion has reached this location. To avoid of moving again, I will occupy the land provided by the government, even though the location is away from the beach,” he said.

Ahmad Dewasa said that since he has no money, he temporarily dismantled and transported first the remaining materials of his house to the new location. For the time be-ing, he sleeps with his family at the same location by making a porch at his neighbor whose house has not

been affected by abrasion. Saena, another resident, also

said that he was planning to move and occupy the land of the parent of her son-in-law. This widow whose sons have become fishermen claimed to have absolutely no land. “Fortunately, the parents of my son-in-laws still have land and allow us to occupy it. The relocation is still waiting for decision of my son,” said Saena.

In the location exposed to abra-sion at Ketapang hamlet, there are dozens of houses under threat. Since they are averagely fisher-

men, some of them decide to move around the full moon where at that time fishermen will take day-off. Samsul, another fisherman, said that he will stay together on the land of his son. “The location is far from the sea, but he has no other choice rather than being buffeted by the abrasion like this,” said Samsul.

Since belonging to poor family, residents expected the government or other parties could lend a hand by providing them with building materials or others to ease their burden. (kmb)

GIANYAR - HIV/AIDS trans-mission is one of the main prob-lems in the health sector faced by Gianyar district. As the data until February, there were 986 cases and this put Gianyar in the fourth posi-tion in terms of HIV/AIDS in Bali. In the future, the public awareness in anticipating and handling this case must be improved. This was revealed by the Secretary II of the Gianyar AIDS Mitigation Commis-sion (KPA), Anak Agung Suardana, Wednesday (May 11).

According to Agung Suardana, the number of HIV/AIDS case in

Gianyar cannot be underestimated. Even though public awareness of checking up to health services began to increase, it does not hap-pen significantly. A number of new cases remain to emerge. Based on the data, in 2015 there were 146 new HIV/AIDS cases, with a cu-mulative 947 HIV/AIDS cases.

“Last year, VCT service of Gianyar district already handled 6,706 patients and 239 of them are identified to be HIV positive. Of the 239 cases, a total of 146 cases are from Gianyar, while 93 others from outside Gianyar. Thus, this

problem needs to be followed up,” he said.

He explained that HIV/AIDS transmission remains to be domi-nated by sexual risk reaching 88 percent. A total of 73.7 percent of the cases were found in productive age (20-39 years), while in toddler age reached 3.3 percent.

A number of problems are still encountered in the response to this case, namely the persistence of stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS, the lack of public awareness of access to VCT services, less trained medi-

cal personnel at health centers for VCT services, weak coordination of the AIDS mitigation and legal instrument chiefly the regional by-law and the strategic plan on AIDS mitigation in Gianyar still needs to be updated.

Related to the issues, Agung Su-ardana said that KPA has prepared a number of programs this year. Some of them include the improvement of VCT services at hospitals and health centers, the integration of VCT services with relevant health care, training for medical and non-medical personnel, mobile VCT to

key populations and the intensifica-tion of early detection of prevention against mother to child transmission (PMTCT). The whole program will work well if all the stakeholders understand and carry out their re-spective function optimally.

In the meantime, Assistant II of the Regional Secretariat of Gianyar, Ketut Astawa Suyasa, revealed that HIV/AIDS cases recorded are believed not to indicate the real situation. Many cases are predicted to have not been detected and they have potential to infect the com-munity. (kmb25)

BEIJING - Ties between China and Britain will not be harmed by Queen Elizabeth being caught on camera saying Chinese officials were “very rude”, said an influential Chi-nese newspaper on Thursday which instead laid the blame on Western media “barbarians”.

In footage broadcast by the BBC of a garden party at Buckingham Pal-ace on Tuesday, Queen Elizabeth was heard to commiserate with a senior police officer who had the “bad luck” to be in charge of security during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit in October.

“They were very rude to the am-bassador,” the queen said, referring to Chinese officials.

Under her constitutional role, the 90-year-old monarch never makes any politically or diplomatically sensitive comments in public, and it is rare for the content of her private conversations to be revealed.

The Global Times, published by the ruling Communist Party’s official People’s Daily, said it was inconceivable that British officials had intentionally leaked the video because such a move would be “truly boorish and rude”.

Ties would not be affected by the queen’s remarks, the Global Times said in a Chinese-language commen-tary which also criticised the Western media that reported the incident.

“The disrespectful gossipers in the media there, narcissistic and baring their fangs, seemingly retain vestiges of the inelegance of barbarians,” the paper said.

“We believe, however, that with constant contact with the 5,000-year-old civilisation of the East (China) they will make progress,” it said.

Britain’s government has been determined to boost trade with China as part of a “golden era” in ties, al-though rights groups have accused it of turning a blind eye to alleged abuses by Beijing.

The queen has been careful to keep her views to herself during her 64-year reign, but several other members of Britain’s royal family have made undiplomatic comments about China in the past.

Her husband, Prince Philip, warned some British students in China in the 1980s that they would get “slitty eyes” if they stayed there too long.

China’s Foreign Ministry had downplayed the queen’s comments and said both sides agreed Xi’s trip had been a big success.

While Chinese officials “most likely treated British bureaucrats coldly”, the Global Times said it was not remarkable to have some unpleasant moments in private while bilateral exchanges become more regular and intimate. (rtr)

Turnbull and former New South Wales Premier Neville Wran joined the board of Australian-listed Star Mining NL in 1993. The company hoped to develop a A$20 billion ($14.67 billion)Siberian gold mine called Sukhoi Log, according to the Australian Financial Review, which first reported the story.

Both Turnbull and Wran were subsequently appointed directors of Star Technology Services, a sub-sidiary of Star Mining in the Brit-ish Virgin Islands which had been incorporated by Mossack Fonseca, the Panama-based law firm at the centre of the global scandal.

“There is no suggestion of any impropriety whatsoever. There is nothing new there,” Turnbull told reporters.

“The company of which Neville Wran and I were directors was an Australian listed company and had

it made any profits - which it did not, regrettably - it certainly would have paid tax in Australia.”

The details are included in docu-ments obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Jour-nalists known as the Panama Papers but are not part of the publicly searchable database.

Tax havens and transparency have been thrust into the spot-light as governments worldwide launch probes into possible finan-cial wrongdoing after the details of hundreds of thousands of clients’ tax affairs were leaked from Mos-sack Fonseca.

Turnbull, a former investment banker and technology entrepre-neur, is campaigning ahead of a general election on July 2, with his ruling Liberal-National coalition in a virtual tie with the main opposi-tion. ($1 = A$1.36) (rtr)

DEVELOPMENT plan of man-agement office of the Bali Mandara toll road at Pesanggaran, South Denpasar, by reclaiming the sea is not only responded by the Mayor of Denpasar I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra but also by Chairman of Bali Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) A.A. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra and the expert of spatial planning from the Udayana Univer-

sity Prof. Rumawan Salain. Development plan of manage-

ment office by reclaiming the sea can become a bad precedent for investment world in Bali. Besides, such method will also arouse jeal-ousy among local entrepreneurs feeling to have been discriminated. The investment strategy by violat-ing the spatial planning should be eliminated.

“If all the desires of investors from outside the region, overseas and home practicing non-eco-friendly method are accommodated, they will turn arbitrary and do not respect Balinese diversity, situa-tions as well as customs and cul-ture,” firmed Alit Wiraputra.

He even believed this will also cause the employers of Bali to feel excluded and discriminated. “It is absolutely irrelevant if their entire wishes are fulfilled,” he said.

He argued that the company must find out the office location around the area of Benoa Harbor. There remains extensive land and it is no need to do reclamation because it will give a bad example for busi-nesses and communities in Bali.

He said that if all the investors have the same intention as the man-agement of the Bali Mandara toll road, the sea in Bali can run out to be used for the operations office. “Here, the government must be consistent in protecting the environment. Do not use investment as pretext to an-nex the sea,” he advised.

Rumawan Salain even reminded investors of participating in main-taining the government authority. Never make the government lose its authority before its people be-cause it only meets the ambitions of investors. “I would like to reiterate that investment should not go up against spatial planning. Please comply with the procedures and make the communities around the investment feel comfortable. This nature does not belong to investors and authorities,” he said.

He asserted that in the current digital and technological era, the operations office does not neces-sarily have to merge with the road. An office can be located outside the operating area considering that co-ordination in the digital age is very easy and effective. He also sug-

gested that provincial government of Bali and Denpasar municipality may not get stuck on investment under the pretext of economic em-powerment. The government must consistently maintain the dignity of institution by taking action and recommending an investment in appropriate with the rules of spatial planning. “Remember, do not feel to be a single ruler over the territory we lead. All must obey the laws,” he advised.

He suggested the government of Badung or Bali Province also hav-ing shares in the Bali Mandara Toll Road to provide additional shares by providing local assets for the cooperation, not by giving space to reclaim the sea. Similarly he hoped that the government should not be too accommodative to investment, especially the investment having the potential to damage the spatial planning of Bali.

Chief of Pedungan customary village, I Gusti Putu Budiartha, said on Wednesday (May 11) that his authority has not been involved in the coordination related to the plan. He said that in terms of authority

there is an authority to manage the territory of Benoa Harbor. “We do not know about the development plan of the office,” he said.

In terms of territory of the cus-tomary village, he said the location where to build the management office of the Bali Mandara toll road indeed belongs to Pedungan area. But there is no coordination related to such development plan.

Related to the sea reclamation plan, Budiartha considered it not as easy as it is. Many factors must be considered. For example, it must be considered about the existence of marine life in relation to the impact of the reclamation.

Previously (Bali Post, May 11), management of the Bali Mandara toll road justified its plan to build an operations office by reclaiming 5,000 square meters of area at the Benoa Bay. The operations office is a facility that must be provided for the toll road services. It was submitted by Public Relations of PT Jasamarga Bali Toll, Drajad Hari Suseno, accompanied by the Operations Division Head Ahmad Izzi. (044/kmb12)

Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics agency, said the monthly fall was broad-based, with only energy production posting an in-crease. March’s decline also fol-lows a big 1.2 percent decline in February and means that much of the 2.4 percent surge in January has been erased.

The decline was more than the 0.2 percent fall predicted in markets and raises the possibility that the estimate for first-quarter economic growth will be trimmed in a revi-sion due Friday. After all, one of the reasons why the first estimate came in at a strong quarterly rate of 0.6 percent was largely due to the strong industrial production increase in January.

Analysts said the poor showing over the past couple of months is further evidence that the eurozone is facing a softer economic outlook in light of a number of factors, in-cluding uncertainty over the state of the global economic recovery, emanating in particular from the

slowdown in China.“Today’s data and the ongoing

weakness of industrial surveys sup-port our view that overall eurozone economic growth is set to slow from 1.5 percent last year to about 1.2 percent this year,” said Stephen Brown, European economist at Capital Economics.

It’s the latest indicator to suggest that the eurozone is losing some of the momentum that saw it grow way faster than the U.S. in the first quarter of the year and that has helped get unemployment across the region down.

The eurozone is not alone in fac-ing headwinds, many of which are external to the region, such as the British vote on June 23 on whether to leave the EU and waning benefits from low oil prices. Within the eu-rozone, economic confidence could be jolted by any renewed worries over Greece’s future in the single currency bloc, though these appear to be easing, as well as the upcom-ing Spanish general election.(ap)

TOKYO — Nissan, which is taking a 34 percent stake in scandal-ridden Japanese rival Mitsubishi Mo-tors, suffered a 40 percent plunge in January-March profit as sales dipped and currency perks faded.

Nissan Motor Co. reported a 71 billion yen ($651 million) profit for the quarter Thursday. It had a 119 billion yen profit the same period of 2015. Quarterly sales edged down 1.2 percent to 3.25 trillion yen ($29.8 billion).

A weak yen had worked as a plus for exporters like Yokohama-based Nissan, but the currency has been strengthening in recent months.

For the fiscal year, Nissan’s profit rose 15 percent to 523.8 billion yen ($4.8 billion). The automaker fore-cast a 525 billion yen ($4.8 billion) profit for the fiscal year through March 2017.

Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn announced Thursday that Nissan will spend 237 billion yen ($2.2

billion) to become the top investor in Mitsubishi Motors by purchasing newly issues shares.

Nissan shares dropped 1.4 percent in Tokyo trading as Japanese media reported that a deal with Mitsubishi was imminent. Mitsubishi Motors issues, on the other hand, surged 16 percent.

Mitsubishi Motors has been rocked by a scandal over cheat-ing on mileage tests to inflate fuel economy figures for its minicar models. It had another scandal, over a systematic cover-up of auto defects, which surfaced in the early 2000s, but the wrongdoing had dated back decades.(ap)

NUSA DUA - After a successful event on the 2015, Indonesia Tourism Development Corpora-tion (ITDC) in collaboration with Pregina Art and Showbiz Bali will again hold Bali Blues Festival 2016. The event will take place on May 28, 2016. Top blues singers will once again per-form in Peninsula Island, a small island in the South of Bali facing the Indian Ocean.

As observation, the people of Bangli looked to throng the four-way intersection area of Bangli town from the afternoon. Other than the young, the old people were also willing to jostle so that they could watch closely the performance of stabbing barong. The attractive scene in the performance is the stabbing barong where a number of dancers who had been possessed stabbed a kris dag-ger to their body. In addition, the possessed dancers also savored a live chicken. Such attraction caused a tense atmosphere for the audience.

Secretary of the Gede Selat customary village, Ketut Gede Pradnya, when met last Wednesday said that the stabbing barong itself is a sacred art having been inherited from the ancient times. In the performance of stabbing barong, there are two major figures displayed namely the Barong and Rangda. Both figures are sancti-fied effigies representing local deities and venerated by residents at Puseh Bale Agung Temple of Gede Selat customary village, Susut. “Usually, the sanctified effigies are presented every year coinciding with Kuningan fest,” he explained.

Pursuant to local belief, the performance of stabbing barong is believed to provide blessings and peace for people. Besides, it is believed to be able to heal sick people. When a great disaster occurs, for example, the sanctified effigies are usually escorted to every village lane after the nightfall.

He added that before the era of independence, the King of Bangli regularly picked up the sanctified effigies. At that time he also periodically repainted the sanctified effigies. “This time they are presented in a series of celebrating the 812th anniversary of Bangli town. Hopefully, the performance of the sanctified effigies can pacify Bangli,” he hoped. (kmb40)

“I just don’t believe what they said and no matter how many pieces of debris they’ve found, I just don’t think it is true,” Zhang Qian, whose husband Wang Houbin was on the flight, said in Beijing. “Unless we have a clear and full explanation of what has really happened from the begin-ning to the end, solving all the puzzles, we just feel they are still trying to trick us.”

Investigators are examining marine life attached to the de-bris to see if it could somehow help them narrow down where the plane entered the ocean, but haven’t discovered anything use-ful yet. The interior part, identi-fied by its decorative laminate, is a panel from the main cabin and is believed to be part of a door closet, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau said in a techni-

cal report. But even this interior piece is

also unlikely to prove very help-ful to investigators, said Dell, the accident investigation expert. It won’t, for example, answer the question that some have raised about whether anyone was still at the controls of the plane at the end of its flight, or whether the plane spiraled uncontrollably into the water after running out of fuel.

“I wouldn’t hang your hat too much on what it says, other than it’s got to come out of the airplane somehow and that suggests there was a structural failure in the fuselage that allowed it to get out,” he said. “But how, exactly — who knows?”

That part was found by tourists on Rodrigues Island, while the piece with part of a Rolls-Royce logo was found by an archaeolo-gist while walking along South Africa’s southern coast. (ap)

With Rousseff to be suspended during the Senate trial for allegedly breaking budget rules, the centrist Temer will take the helm of a country that again finds itself mired in politi-cal and economic volatility after a recent decade of prosperity.

The 55-22 vote ends more than 13 years of rule by the left-wing Work-ers Party, which rose from Brazil’s labor movement and helped pull mil-lions of people out of poverty before seeing many of its leaders tainted by corruption investigations.

Fireworks rang out in cities across Brazil after the vote at the end of a 20-hour session in the Senate. Police had briefly clashed with pro-Rousseff demonstrators in Brasilia on Wednesday, exchanging volleys of tear gas and rocks.

Rousseff, a 68-year-old economist and former Marxist guerrilla who

was Brazil’s first female president, is unlikely to be acquitted in a trial that could last as long as six months.

A two-thirds majority is needed in the Senate to convict her but the scale of her defeat on Thursday showed that the opposition already has the support it needs.

“Impeachment is a tragedy for the country ... It is a bitter though neces-sary medicine,” opposition Senator Jose Serra, tipped to become foreign minister under Temer, said during the debate. “But having the Rous-seff government continue would be a bigger tragedy. Brazil’s situation would be unbearable.”

The impeachment process began in the lower house of Congress in December. Rousseff has denied any wrongdoing and called her impeach-ment a “coup”.

Temer, a 75-year-old centrist and

constitutional scholar who spent decades in Brazil’s Congress, now faces the challenge of restoring economic growth and calm at a time when Brazilians, increasingly polarized, are questioning whether their institutions can deliver on his promise of stability.

In addition to a towering budget deficit, equal to more than 10 percent of its annual economic output, Brazil is suffering from rising unemploy-ment, plummeting investment and a projected economic contraction of more than 3 percent this year.

“Only major reforms can keep Brazil from moving from crisis to crisis,” says Eduardo Giannetti da Fonseca, an economist and author in São Paulo who has written exten-sively about the country’s socioeco-nomic problems.

But those changes, including an overhaul of pension, tax and labor laws and a political reform to streamline fragmented parties in a mercenary Congress, could remain elusive at a time of turmoil. (rtr)

DEVESELU - The United States switched on an $800 mil-lion missile shield in Romania on Thursday, a step it sees as vital to defend itself and Europe from so-called rogue states but which the Kremlin says is aimed at blunting its own nuclear arsenal.

To the music of military bands at the remote Deveselu air base, senior U.S. and NATO officials declared operational the ballistic missile defence site, which is capable of shooting down rockets from coun-tries such as Iran that Washington says could one day reach major European cities.

“As long as Iran continues to develop and deploy ballistic mis-siles, the United States will work with its allies to defend NATO,” said U.S. Deputy Defence Secretary Robert Work, standing in front of the shield’s massive grey concrete housing that was adorned with a U.S. flag.

Before the ceremony, Frank Rose, deputy U.S. assistant sec-retary of state for arms control, warned that Iran’s ballistic missiles can hit parts of Europe, including Romania.

When complete, the defensive umbrella will stretch from Green-land to the Azores. On Friday, the United States will break ground on a final site in Poland due to be ready by late 2018, completing the defence line first proposed almost a decade ago.

The full shield also includes ships and radars across Europe. It will be handed over to NATO in July, with command and control run

from a U.S. air base in Germany.Russia is incensed at such of

show of force by its Cold War rival in formerly communist-ruled eastern Europe. Moscow says the U.S.-led alliance is trying to encircle it close to the strategically important Black Sea, home to a Russian naval fleet and where NATO is also con-sidering increasing patrols.

“It is part of the military and political containment of Russia,” Andrey Kelin, a senior Russian Foreign Ministry official, said on Thursday, the Interfax news agency reported.

“These decisions by NATO can only exacerbate an already dif-ficult situation,” he added, saying the move would hinder efforts to repair ties between Russia and the alliance.

The readying of the shield also comes as NATO prepares a new deterrent in Poland and the Baltics, following Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea. In response, Russia is reinforcing its western and southern flanks with three new divisions.

Poland is concerned Russia may retaliate further by announcing the deployment of nuclear weapons to its enclave of Kaliningrad, located between Poland and Lithuania. Russia has stationed anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles there, able to cover huge areas and complicate NATO’s ability to move around.

The Kremlin says the shield’s aim is to neutralise Moscow’s nuclear arsenal long enough for the United States to strike Russia in the event of war. Washington and NATO deny that. (rtr)

JAKARTA - Chairman of the presidium of the Indonesia Police Watch (IPW) Neta S. Pane asked President Joko Widodo not to keep police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti in office after the four star police general reaches his retirement age next month.

“President Jokowi should not hear advises from men around him that wants to keep Badrodin longer in office,” Neta S. Pane, said here on Wednesday.

He said extension of the office term of Badrodin could trigger controversies and political and legal polemics.

There have been discourses about the possibility of the president keep-ing Badrodin longer in service.

The public relation department of the police headquarter refused to comment about the fate of Badro-din.

“We have not received informa-tion about such extension,” police chief spokesman Brig.Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said. (ant)

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government has reminded the people that the ban on communism and the decision on dissolution of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) is still in force. The government reaffirmed the ban on communism and disbanding of the PKI following increasing activities voicing the ideology of communism.

“Provisional House of Consultative Assembly (MPRS) Decree No. 25/1966 that regulates communist ideologies and the dissolution of the PKI is still in force,” Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung told a press conference at the Presidential Office.

Pramono said President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has held a meeting with a number of state officials to discuss activities related to communism and use of its symbols.

National Police (Polri) Chief General Badrodin Haiti said he and President Jokowi, Attorney General HM Prasetyo, Head of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) Sutiyoso and Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) officers had met to discuss increasing activities and use of symbols linked to the PKI or communism.

The Polri chief said security officers also noticed a num-ber of communism linked activities. Badrodin said President Jokowi gave directives to various state apparatuses to take legal action based on the MPRS Decree No. 25/1966 to handle activities or attributes of communism.

“The president instructed that legal approach be adopted because MPRS decree and Law No.27, 1999, are still in force,” the police chief said. The decree regulates the ban-ning of any activity in any form which disseminates or propagates Communism, Leninism or Marxism.

Security officers will take legal steps against people suspected to have disseminated Communist ideology in any form, such as through T-shirts, symbols or films. Badrodin said besides police, supervision in the field to check activi-ties linked to communism will be there.

Further, the Setara Institute has urged President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to chalk out plans to settle cases of gross human rights violations committed in the past, including those in the aftermath of the 1965 abortive communist coup.

“It is important for President Jokowi to take steps im-mediately in order to prevent social unrest due to the rising communist propaganda in recent days,” Setara Institute Chairman Hendardi noted in a press statement here on Tuesday.

Hendardi said the propaganda alleging a rise in com-munist tendencies in recent days would hamper the efforts to resolve past gross human rights violations, advance the cause of democracy and uphold human rights.

After all, the statements made by ministers and person-nel of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and National Police (Polri) were less conducive to pacifying the situation. Instead, these had a tendency to sow seeds of hatred and foster social alienation.

“The communist propaganda will not only affect the vic-tims of the 1965 event, but the civil liberties of the citizens will also be at stake. People not related to the 1965 event could also suffer from the same stigma,” he pointed out.

Hendardi claimed that the propaganda about alleged ef-forts to promote communism was linked to several activi-ties highlighting the truth behind the 1965 tragedy through films, discussions, or publication of books. It could create rifts among the people.

Hendardi also suspected that the propaganda was launched to hinder the states efforts to bring about rec-onciliation among the people. It was meant to justify the restrictions imposed upon people and suppression of their civil rights. (ant)

OAKLAND - Stephen Curry on Tuesday scaled heights never reached by NBA greats such as Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and LeBron James when he became the first unanimous winner of the league’s Most Valuable Player award.

A day after returning from injury to playoff action with an explosive performance for the Golden State Warriors, Curry swept all 131 first-place votes to earn the game’s highest individual honor for a second straight season.

He joined Johnson, Jordan and Steve Nash as the only guards to win the honor in consecutive campaigns, having dazzled NBA fans during the regular season with one astonishing display of shot-making after another.

Already established as one of the league’s greatest ever three-point shooters, Curry led the NBA in scoring with an average of 30.1 points and a record 402 three-point baskets as he led the Warriors to an un-precedented 73-9 mark.

The 28-year-old shot a career-high 50.4 percent from the field and achieved a free throw percentage of 90.8 while averaging 6.7 assists and a career-high 5.4 rebounds in 79 games.

Curry became just the fourth player in NBA history to average at least 30 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals in a season, following Rick Barry (1974-75), Jordan (three times) and Dwyane Wade (2008-09).

A pivotal figure for the Warriors as they clinched the NBA cham-pionship last season, Curry earned a total of 1,310 points in balloting for the 2015-16 MVP award.

San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard (634) was second, fol-lowed by Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James (631).

Curry’s 2015-16 season is by no means done as he bids to lead the Warriors to a successful defence of their NBA title.

Having played in only two of Golden State’s first eight playoff games after being sidelined by an ankle injury and then a sprained knee, the inspirational point guard returned to action with devastating effect on Monday.

After a successful warmup, he came off the bench and poured in 40 points to lift the Warriors to a 132-125 overtime win against the Portland Trail Blazers and a commanding 3-1 lead in their Western Conference semi-final.

“I don’t think anyone could have predicted the explosion,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr said of Curry, who scored an NBA-record 17 points in overtime. “That was crazy.

“The guy had played one basketball game in three weeks.” (rtr)

The Guardian newspaper report-ed on Wednesday that the Tokyo team had made the payments to a Singapore bank account it said was linked to Papa Massata Diack, son of disgraced former IAAF President Lamine Diack.

Japanese chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news confer-ence that he was unaware of the newspaper report.

“I am confident that our bid was conducted in a clean manner,” Suga said, adding that should Tokyo be approached by French authorities on the matter, it would cooperate.

Diack is under a French police investigation for corruption at the

IAAF, athletics’ governing body. His son, believed to be in Senegal, declined to comment to the Guard-ian because of the investigation, the paper reported.

The International Olympic Com-mittee (IOC) said on Wednesday it had been in touch with French magistrates. An IOC spokesman said the group’s ethics and compli-ance officer would continue to be in contact with French authorities to clarify any alleged improper conduct, while French prosecutors declined to comment.

Hikariko Ono, spokeswoman for the Tokyo Organising Committee for 2020, which is different from

the bid committee that won the right to host the games, said the commit-tee believes Tokyo won because it presented the best bid. Yasuhiro Nakamori, spokesman for the Japan Olympic Committee, agreed.

“We have not been asked any questions by the IOC on this mat-ter,” he added. JOC chief Tsunekazu Takeda was out of the country until the weekend.

Japan, which won the right to host the games over Istanbul and Madrid in 2013, has been beset by a number of woes over the Games, including scrapping its original design for the centrepiece Olym-pic stadium, which has delayed construction.

Last month it selected a new games logo after its previous one was withdrawn due to allegations of plagiarism. (rtr)

TOKYO - Japan on Thursday denied a report that its Tokyo 2020 Olympic bid team had paid 1.3 million euros ($1.48 mil-lion) as part of its efforts to host the Summer Games, saying it had won the bid cleanly.

A 3-0 win over Everton guaran-teed safety for Sunderland with a game to spare this season, justify-ing its decision to hire survival spe-cialist Sam Allardyce as manager in October.

Under Allardyce, who has yet to be relegated from the English top flight in 25 years as a manager, Sunderland lost just one of its last 10 matches — and that was against champion Leicester. “It’s pretty miraculous,” Allardyce said.

Newcastle — much to Sun-derland’s delight — and Norwich were demoted instead, joining already-relegated Aston Villa in going down just as the Premier League begins its new domestic and international TV deals worth a record $12 billion over the next three years.

“We have just secured the finan-cial side of staying in the Premier League, which is the most impor-tant thing this season,” Allardyce said.

Norwich’s 4-2 win over Watford on Wednesday proved to be in vain, with Sunderland staying four points ahead. Norwich lasted just one season back in the top flight.

“The story for us is that as a club, we have dropped short for a variety of reasons,” Norwich manager Alex Neil said. “We have made vital errors in games at cru-cial times and the recruitment has not been as good to strengthen the squad.”

Newcastle needed a favor from out-of-form Everton at the Stadium

of Light, but a free kick from Pat-rick van Aanholt and two goals

from fellow defender Lamine Kone eased Sunderland to victory.

It remains to be seen if Rafa Benitez, hired by Newcastle in March, triggers the break clause in his contract that allows him to terminate his three-year contract as manager. Benitez was coaching

Real Madrid at the start of the sea-son and is one of the most reputed managers around, making it hard to envisage him spending a season in England’s second tier.

“We are devastated at our relega-tion from the Premier League, as I know every single person con-nected to this football club will be,” Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley said in a statement.

“I want to thank all of the fans for the support you have shown for the club you love throughout the season, in spite of this massive disappoint-ment and underachievement.”

Allardyce gets a measure of revenge on Newcastle more than eight years after he was fired at St. James’ Park just eight months into a three-year deal, having been criticized for his brand of football. And he gets one over Benitez, a manager he has openly clashed with down the years.

The only things at stake in Sun-day’s final round of games in the Premier League are the last Cham-pions League qualification spot, be-tween Manchester City, Manchester United and — at least mathemati-cally — West Ham, and the Europa League qualification berth.

Christian Benteke scored in the second minute of injury time to earn Liverpool a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the other game. Eden Hazard put Chelsea in front, his fourth goal in fourth games to continue his resurgence in a disap-pointing campaign for last season’s player of the year in England.

Liverpool fielded a strong team, a week out from its appearance in the Europa League final against Sevilla. (ap)

MARSEILLE — Soccer star Zinedine Zidane’s childhood home in Marseille is being demol-ished, part of an urban renewal project aimed at rehabilitating a blighted area of the southern French city.

Journalists and neighbors crowd-ed around as construction vehicles on Wednesday went to work tearing apart “Building G,” unofficially re-ferred to as the “Zidane building,” in the Castellane neighborhood of

northern Marseille.Zidane, a child of Algerian im-

migrants, became a French soccer idol after he and his ethnically diverse teammates won the World Cup at home in 1998. But his playing career ended badly when he head-butted an opponent and was thrown out of the 2006 World Cup final.

The 43-year-old has since turned to coaching, taking the job with Real Madrid earlier this year. (ap)

MEXICO CITY — Jose Mourin-ho is certain he will be managing a club within two months but says the delayed appointment will compro-mise preseason preparations.

The 53-year-old Portuguese has been strongly linked with the Man-chester United job but speaking from Mexico on Wednesday, he claimed to “know nothing” about a move to Old Trafford to replace Louis van Gaal.

Mourinho, who was fired as Chel-sea manager in December, was back in the dugout on Wednesday in the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City to coach a FIFA Legends team, featuring Ronaldinho and Fabio Cannavaro, against a Mexican All-stars side.

Managing a team again, albeit for an exhibition ahead of the FIFA Congress, had whetted Mourinho’s appetite for a return to coaching.

“Of course I miss (it),” Mourinho told The Associated Press. “In July I will be back. So we are in May. May to July is nothing. I keep enjoy-ing my life which I’m doing, keep enjoying my family. But in July I am back.”

Asked when he needs to sign a contract by, the London-based Mourinho responded: “June 30 — that’s fine.”

Manchester United has not denied months of reports that Van Gaal will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season and be replaced by Mourinho, who coached Real Madrid, Inter Mi-lan and Porto around his two stints at Chelsea.

Van Gaal’s United future looks bleaker with a fourth place finish in the Premier League now out of the team’s hands. To qualify for the Champions League, United needs to beat Bournemouth and rely on Manchester City losing to Swansea on the final day of the season on Sunday.

“I don’t know. I know nothing about it really,” Mourinho said, when asked by the AP about being hired by United. “I don’t have a club and I was waiting for these guys (the FIFA Legends) to win the match to give me a hand but because I lost the match (9-8) it’s even more difficult to get the club.” United director David Gill is also in Mexico City in his capacity as a FIFA vice president.

If Mourinho does resume employ-ment in July he won’t have officially been involved in planning for the club’s season.

“It’s difficult because when you get a new club in this period nor-mally the clubs they did already their work,” Mourinho said. “I give you an example. I’m not the Chelsea manager but I organized the Chelsea pre-season in many aspects because

I did that 10 months ago.“Clubs have their commercial,

marketing departments always in-volved in everything. When a new manager arrives in May, June it’s very difficult to touch in some points

but we know that.”But Mourinho said a late appoint-

ment would not affect his ability to identify and sign transfer targets ahead of the start of the new season in August. (ap)

BRUSSELS — Vincent Kom-pany was officially left off Bel-gium’s 23-man squad for next month’s European Championship on Thursday. Belgium coach Marc Wilmots said Kompany’s absence is “a shame for him, for the team.”

“Let’s not cry about it,” Wilmots added, “we are look-ing resolutely to the future.” Kompany was injured early in Manchester City’s loss at Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals and had already said he would miss the tournament in France.

Liverpool forwards Divock Origi and Christian Benteke were named in the squad, despite Ori-gi’s ankle injury and Benteke’s struggle to get into Liverpool’s first team.

“Every time I have seen him play, whether it was for only 10 minutes or a quarter of an hour, he was good,” Wilmots said of Benteke.

Wilmots named nine defend-ers amid doubts over injuries but will drop one by May 31, the UEFA deadline for squad lists.

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld is expected to fill in for Kompany, controlling the center of defense, while Man-chester City forward Kevin De Bruyne will play up front.

“I think it’s essential to have three attackers,” Wilmots said. “Kevin is the perfect man to hold up the ball.” Wilmots also named seven players on standby. At Euro 2016, Belgium will play in Group E along with Italy, Ireland and Sweden. (ap)

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce celebrates after the final whistle of the English Premier League soccer match at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland, England, Wednesday May 11, 2016.

MANCHESTER — Sunderland completed its latest escape from relegation in the English Premier League on Wednesday — and consigned bitter northeast rival Newcastle to the second tier in the process.

(rtr)

(rtr)

“Thank God, the four Indonesian citizens, who were held hostage by the armed group, have been re-leased,” he stated at a press confer-ence, adding that the condition of the four boat crewmen was fine.

“They have been released, thanks to the sound cooperation between the Philippine and Indonesian govern-ments,” he affirmed in the company of Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and Commander of the Indonesian

Defense Forces General Gatot Nur-mantyo.

President Widodo remarked that the four were now with the Philip-pine authorities and would soon be handed over to Indonesia.

“I thanked the Philippine govern-ment for its sound cooperation and efforts for the second time to secure the release of the Indonesian hos-tages,” he stated.

The president also expressed

gratitude for the nations initiative to hold a trilateral meeting between Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philip-pines in Yogyakarta on May 5 that had yielded results.

“This operation was successful due to the implementation of the results of the meeting,” he added.

Ten Indonesian boat crew mem-bers were recently released after being held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf group since March 26, 2016, while the four others held captive since April 15, 2016, were set free by the same group on Wednesday. (ant)

(ant)

(kmb40)

(044/kmb12)

(kmb25)

(dwa)

Depp back as Mad Hatter in “Alice Through the Looking Glass”

LONDON - Hollywood star Johnny Depp returns as the flamboyant Mad Hatter in “Alice Through the Looking Glass” for more big screen fantasy adventures inspired by the much loved stories by Lewis Carroll.

GOVERNMENT continues to bring in foreign travelers to Bali. Actually not all foreign travelers making a visit to Bali want to squander their dollars so that local people are getting

prosperous.“Approximately there are

220,000 foreigners living and working in Bali. They become a burden to Bali because they stay and live at low cost and they do not pay taxes,” said Chairman of the Bali Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Anak Agung Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, Wednesday (May 11).

On that account, added Alit Wiraputra, it is pointless to Bali. Instead they are using subsidized fuel and working in Bali without clear status. “For example, they become illegal property agent and illegal tour guide. This absolutely needs to be anticipated and addressed. Otherwise, they can marginalize the people of Bali,” he said.

FILE - In this Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, file photo, a waiter walks past a mural of flight MH370 in Shah Alam outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Malaysia’s government said Thursday, May 12, 2016, that two more pieces of debris, discovered in South Africa and Rodrigues Island off Mauritius, were “almost certainly” from Flight 370, which mysteriously disappeared more than two years ago with 239 people on board.

The aircraft mysteriously disap-peared more than two years ago with 239 people on board, and so far an extensive underwater search of a vast area of the Indian Ocean off Australia’s west coast has turned up empty.

Though the discovery of the de-bris has bolstered authorities’ asser-tion that the plane went down some-where in the Indian Ocean, none of the parts thus far has yielded any

clues into exactly where and why the aircraft crashed. Those elusive answers lie with the flight data re-corders, or black boxes, which may never be found, said Geoff Dell, a specialist in accident investigation at Central Queensland University in Australia. “It shows they’re looking in the right ocean — that’s about it,” Dell said.

The two newly identified pieces of debris were found in March.

Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said one is an engine cowling piece with a partial Rolls-Royce logo, and the other is an interior panel piece from an aircraft cabin — the first interior part found from the missing plane.

An international team of experts in Australia who examined the de-bris concluded that both pieces were consistent with panels found on a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 air-craft, Liow said. “As such, the team has confirmed that both pieces of debris from South Africa and Rodri-gues Island are almost certainly from MH370,” he said in a statement.

All five pieces have been found

in various spots around the In-dian Ocean. Last year, a wing part from the plane washed ashore on France’s Reunion Island. In March, investigators confirmed two pieces of debris found along Mozam-bique’s coast were almost certainly from the aircraft.

The jet, which vanished on March 8, 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, is be-lieved to have crashed somewhere in a remote stretch of the southern Indian Ocean about 1,800 kilome-ters (1,100 miles) off Australia’s west coast. Authorities had predict-ed that any debris from the plane that isn’t on the ocean floor would

eventually be carried by currents to the east coast of Africa.

Most of the passengers on the plane were Chinese, and many of their families have refused to give up hope that they could somehow still be alive despite the discoveries of debris.

Malaysia: 2 more pieces ‘almost certainly’ from Flight 370

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s government said Thursday that two more pieces of debris, discovered in South Africa and Rodrigues Island off Mauritius, are “almost certainly” from Flight 370, bringing the total number of pieces believed to have come from the missing Malaysian jet to five.
