Leicester’s Vardy named football writers’ player of the year

The performer, whose real name is David Evans, sang four songs on Saturday night for about 200 doc-tors, researchers and philanthropists who attended a conference at the Vatican on regenerative medicine called Cellular Horizons.

Backed by a choir of seven Irish teenagers, and wearing his trade-mark black beanie cap, he played acoustic guitar and sang a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “If it be your will”, and versions of U2 songs “Yahweh”, “Ordinary love” and “Walk on”.

The Edge, whose father died last month from cancer and whose daughter overcame leukaemia, is on the board of foundations working for cancer prevention.

He joked with his audience,

telling them he was stunned when asked to play in the chapel which was painted by Renaissance master Michelangelo in the 16th century.

“When they asked me if I wanted to become the first contemporary artist to play in the Sistine Chapel, I didn’t know what to say because usually there’s this other guy who sings,” the musician said, referring to U2 front man Bono.

“Being Irish you learn very early that if you want to be asked to come back it’s very important to thank the local parish priest for the loan of the hall,” he said.

He then thanked Pope Francis and other Vatican officials “for al-lowing us to use the most beautiful parish hall in the world”.

The Edge dedicated his per-

formance of “Walk on”, written in 2000 for Myanmar democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi when she was under house arrest, to Pope Francis, who he described as “the people’s pope”.

“He’s doing an amazing job and long may he continue,” he added.

The rock star sprinkled his ad-dress with technical terms such as bio markers and angiogenesis.

“I can tell this is a really cool audience because normally when I say angiogenesis eyes glaze over,” he said. Angiogenesis is the process through which new blood vessels, which tumours need to grow, are formed. Scientists are seeking ways to block tumour angiogenesis.

The Vatican conference, which was addressed by U.S. Vice Presi-dent Joe Biden on Friday, was or-ganised by the U.S.-based Stem for Life Foundation to share ideas and treatments on the use of adult stem cells to cure rare diseases. (rtr)

On Saturday, April 30, 2016, reverently honoring “Tumpek Kandang” - a day set aside on the Balinese calendar to honor all God’s creatures great and small, Bali Safari & Marine Park sought the Almighty’s blessing on the hundreds of animals representing more than 60 species who make the 40-hectare Park their home.

The solemn ceremony, led by a Bali-Hindu priest (pe-mangku) from an adjacent village, was held at the Park’s giant Ganesha Statue. Attend-ing the prayers were also a large number of Park employ-ees and animals that included a Sumatran Elephant, a pair of colorful macaus, an orang-utan, a binturong and a large python.

The unusual ceremony gen-erated great interest among

the Park’s many visitors who were encouraged to put on a traditional sarong and sash and join the Tumpek Kandang rituals. Always eager to share the rich nuances of Balinese culture, members of the Park’s professional team explained the intricacies of the Island’s traditions with the visitors. The recipient for five years running of the prestigious Tri Hita Karana Award presented by the Provincial Government for promoting and preserving Balinese Culture, rigorous observance of Bali’s elaborate religious protocols is embraced by the Safari Park.

William Santoso, General Manager of the Bali Safari & Marine Park, said: “Ac-cording to Hindu teachings, harmony between man, the animal kingdom and nature

as a whole must always be maintained. Humanity must seek a harmonious coexistence with nature – including all the globe’s flora and fauna. Bali Safari, as an agent for educa-tion and conservation, supports the appreciation and respect embodied in Bali’s ‘Tumpek Kandang’ observances. In this way, we offer praise and thanks to the Creator for the continu-ing welfare of our animals.”

The Tumpek Kandang cer-emonies honors the supremacy of Ida Sang Hyang Widhi, Sang Hyang Siwa Pasupati – also known as Rare Angon, the spiritual shepherd of all wild and domesticated animals.

Tumpek Kandang is cel-ebrated once every 6 months on the convergence of Sabtu Kliwon Wuku Uye on the Ba-linese Calendar.

Head of the Denpasar Livestock, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, A.A. Gede Bayu Brahmasta, ac-companied by Chief of Disease Observation and Investigation Section, Ida Ayu Martini, said that the mass vaccinations are still ongo-ing. He estimated that more than 90 percent of the rabies animal carriers in Denpasar will get a vaccine.

“Our team is continuing to work in field until July” he said adding that he hopes that the public and hamlet chiefs in particular will help support this endeavour so that it can be implemented suc-cessfully.

Martini said that Denpasat has

had no reported cases of rabies infected frogs this year. However, precautionary efforts must still be carried out. In addition to vaccina-tions, there has also been conceal-ing for animals owners and when necessary dog eliminations.

Martini added that the seventh mass vaccination this year will be organized in four subdistricts. In order for the program to be suc-cessful, her deployed eight regular teams and six rapid response teams and 65,000 vaccine ampoules have been prepared.

Member of Commission IV of the Denpasar House of Repre-sentatives, AAN Gede Widiada,

responded positively to the mass vaccination program being orga-nized simultaneously all over Bali, especially in the city of Denpasar. In addition to dengue, rabies remains a threat to people in Denpasar.

However, said Widiada, in ad-dition to vaccinations, counseling about how to take poorer care of ones animals also needs to be in-tensified, so that dogs are not left to roam freely and they are today.

“Many people still bring their dogs to public area such as city parks, but this is dangerous for so-ciety”, explained a member of the committee in charge of the health affairs. (kmb12)

Lawyer Nengah Jimat, S.H. expresse a similar point of view saying that according to him, night clubs and the like must have certain security standards given the the risk of criminality, starting with security guards and security devices such as CCTVs. The police, he said as security and law enforce-ment experts should be capable of taking preventive measures by working together with the various stakeholders.

“The police must act with firness in upholding Indonesian law. Foreingers criminals must also be handled firmly”, said Jimat.

In the enforcement of law, the police must be guided by the facts and rule of law. Therefore police need to be increasingly observant when looking into the motives for crimes. “We have already appealed to managers of nightlife faciltities –especially security personnel, to deal with drunk people according to SOP. Drunk people or people who are fighting must not be handled with violence. There are police on duty and police can also be called” said said head of Kuta Police Wayan Sumara.

The Sky Garden Discotek on Jalan Legian has been in the spotlight recently for numerous incidients, the most recent being the case of 32 year old Australian Hughes J who was allegedly attacked by the Sky Garden’s security guard last Satruday (Apr 4).

“This most recent case was reported on April 7th, even thought the incident occurred on April 2nd. According to our investigation the victim was not at-tacked by Sky Garden’s security guard”

said Sumara. In order to prove the veracity of the

report, the former head of the Ubud Police immediately contacted the Aus-tralian Consulat and they all went down to the scene of the crime. The CCTC footage revealed that it the security guard did not attack Hughes. The CCTV footage, eye witnesses and reports from other people present led them to believe that the victim was in fact quite drunk however”, he said.

Sumara added that if ever there were an incident like say a fight, then the po-lice should be called immediately and emphasized that they are always on duty in Legian and other places.

He also said that he hopes that secu-rity guards in nighclubs can be trained about rules and regulations.

“We must not allow members of gangs to intervene with their gangster methods when unwanted situations in nigh clubs occur. We ask that the police, the military and village security forces be called in if need be”, emphasized Sumara.

One of Sky Garden’s managers, Putu Sugiarta said that his place of work is managed in a professional manner adher-ing to prevailing rules and regulations.

He added that they are presently coor-dinating with the police who are dealing with the Hughes case as it would appear that what was reported does not concur with the facts. He also added that there are 100 CCTV cameras covering the entire night-club.(rah)

Rabies vaccinations continue to be carried out until JulyDENPASAR—

Mass rabbies vaccinations of potential animal carriers have been going on since April 18th and are still going on in Bali. . Based on data from the Denpasar Livestock, Fisher-ies and Maritime Affairs, as of last Wednesday (Apr. 27) a total of 8,947 animals were reported to have been vaccinated. This represents just 15 percent of all the potentially rabies carrying animals - mostly dogs that amount to roughly 60,000 animals.

SUTHERLAND - South Africa’s SALT telescope has helped detect the first white dwarf pulsar, the latest co-discovery that has astronomers eager to use the largest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere to unlock the galaxy’s secrets.

Quick reaction times, as well as being significantly cheaper than similar European or American facilities in producing the science are key competitive advantages, said a senior astronomer at the SALT consortium during a media visit.

“SALT is now living up to expectations, producing high-quality science data that probe the far reaches of the universe,” said Ted Williams, a director at the South African Astronomical Observa-tory managing the site.

Scientists know of neutron stars, large objects about the size of the Sun that have compacted down at the end of their lives to something about 10 km (six miles) across, the last stop before a black hole.

Williams said these incredibly dense objects have been known for decades to produce pulsars, which emit regular pulses of radio waves and other electromagnetic radiation at rates of up to one thousand pulses per second.

“But there is another class of compact objects called white dwarfs, bigger, the size of the earth. So rather than 10 kilometres in size we are looking at 6,000 kilometers and we’ve just discov-ered the very first white dwarf pulsar,” he said of the previously unknown celestial phenomena.

Situated atop a hill in the desolate Northern Cape around 350 km north of Cape Town, the $43 million SALT telescope used its powerful spectroscopy light measurement tool to prove the exis-tence of the white dwarf pulsar.

Shared by a consortium of partners from South Africa, India, America and Europe, SALT’s queuing system allows it to interrupt routine observations and within minutes focus its 10-metre optical telescope on new discoveries, said Williams.

In February, SALT was the first major telescope to take a spec-trum of a supernova in the nearby Centaurus A galaxy hours after its discovery.

It also helped reveal one of the biggest explosions ever recorded in the universe, 200 times more powerful than a typical supernova and believed to have shone at 570 billion times the brightness of the Sun. (rtr)

The so-called “Manx” comet, named after a breed of cats without tails, was made of rocky materials that are normally found near Earth. Most comets are made of ice and other frozen compounds and were formed in solar system’s frigid far reaches.

Researchers believe the newly found comet was formed in the same region as Earth, then booted to the solar system’s backyard like a gravitational slingshot as planets jostled for position.

Scientists involved in the dis-covery now seek to learn how many more Manx comets exist, which could help to resolve debate over exactly how and when the solar system settled into its current configuration.

“Depending how many we find,

we will know whether the giant planets danced across the solar system when they were young, or if they grew up quietly without mov-ing much,” paper co-author Olivier Hainaut, an astronomer with the European Southern Observatory in Germany, said in a statement.

The new comet, known as C/2014 S3, was discovered in 2014 by the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, or Pan-STARRS. This network of telescopes scours the night-time skies for fast-moving comets, asteroids and other celes-tial bodies.

Typically comets coming in from the same region as the Manx grow bright tails as they approach the sun, the result of ice vaporizing off their bodies and gleaming in

reflected sunlight.But C/2014 S3 was dark and

virtually tailless when it was spot-ted about twice as far away from the sun as Earth.

Later analysis showed that instead of ices typically found on comets, the Manx comet contained materials similar to the rocky as-teroids located in a belt between Mars and Jupiter.

And C/2014 S3 appeared pris-tine, an indication that it had been in the solar system’s deep freeze for a long time, said University of Hawaii astronomer Karen Meech, the lead author.

The discovery of additional Manx comets could help scientists to refine computer models used to simulate the solar system’s forma-tion, Meech said.

Astronomers find a tailless comet, first of its kind

CAPE CANAVERAL - Astronomers have found a first-of-its-kind tailless comet whose com-position may offer clues into long-standing questions about the solar system’s formation and evolution, according to research published on Friday in the journal Science Advances.

Head of the event committee I Komang Adi Anjaya, explained that the stable was created with the aim of boosting the economy of the local people, and with the hope that things will continue to blossom so that what is desired can come to fruition. He added that the plan is to raise about 60 cattle at a time in these stables.

Anjaya also explained that the livestock group has already given serious thought to how to raise

these cattle. “We have chosen to raise local cattle, and to feed them with what is available on the local market such as cacao skins and coffee grinds. Their manure will be used my local people for their needs including organic fertilizer and biogas”, he said.

This cattle group, he added will not only benefit the economy of Batungsel but thanks to the organic compost that the cattle will produce, this project will also

contribute to the benefit of farmers all over Tabanan.

Regent representative I Ko-mang Gede Sanjaya then spoke praises of this initiative saying that this extremely positive proj-ect should be supported by the government. “This enterprise is very positive and really helps the government in their develop-ment efforts. The presence of this livestock raising business will not only benefit the government but

will also be of great benefit to the people”, he said enthusiastically.

Sanjaya added that the creation of this relatively large cattle-raising business will also be very good for the economy of the local people. Not only will many jobs be created but local people will be able to experience immediate results.

He added that cattle feed in Batungsel is also abundant so this should not present any kind of obstacle. All that is required is for there to be a reciprocal relationship between the cattle business and the villagers. So in the future this project will benefit the economy and also increase

the productivity of the people of Batungsel Village and farmers throughout Tabanan, said Sanjaya with hope.

“The government very much supports this project and express-es their highest appreciation for the initiative. It our earnest hope that this cattle-raising operation will contribute to continuously increasing the rate of economic development –especially in Ba-tungsel Village.

It is our shared hope that this will bring forth a safe and pros-perous society and that their achievements will be better and better over time”, said Sanjaya. (kmb28)

TABANAN - Foreign people come to Indonesia not just as tour-ists but also to work. Obviously in order for foreigners to work here, they must fulfill the regulated re-quirements, including paying the compulsory IMTA tax.

However not all foreigners ful-fill their obligations and so the Regency of Tabanan has formed the ‘Foreigner Supervision Team’ to keep an eye on things. Head of the Labour and Transmigration Bu-reau, Tjokorda Alit Juli in a recent meeting explained that the team was created not long ago and is headed by the immigration division

of Denpasar’s class I Immigration Office and staff.

Tabanan’s Bureau of Labour and Transmigration represented the Regent, and the Police were represented by: the District Mili-tary Commnad (Kodim) and the National Intelligence Bureau (Intel TNI AU), the National Attoreny’s Office, The National Police (Ke-bangspol). Also present at the meet-ing were: The Culture and Tourism Bureau (Dibudpar), The Labour Bureau (Disnaker), The Census and Population Departement (Dis-dukcapil), The Education Bureau (Disdik), The Communication and

Information Bureau (Dishubkom-info), The Industry and Commerce Bureau (Disperindag), The Village Government and People’s Empow-erment Bureau (BPMPD), Human Rights Lawyers and the Office of Religion.

Tjok Juli explained that this team was formed in order to supervise the activities of foreigners and the completeness of their documents. The team will be given

Tim ini akan dibekali dengan Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that are being prepared by the Immigration and the lead-ing sector of the team. During

the discussion in the meeting, in turned out that immigrations data concerning foreigners was not the same as the data of other relevant departments.

Tabanan’s immigration depart-ment had recorded 258 foreingers in Tabanan 28 of who hold Visitor Vi-sas, 174 hold long stay visas and 83 of whom hold 83 hold long stay vi-sas. However according to the Cen-sus and Population Bureau, there are 17 foreingners with ITAS visas and 17 with ITAP Visas. Meanwhile the Culture and Tourism Bureau records the presence of 11 foreigners while the Labor only records 8 foreigners

working in Tabanan. This data will be verified based

on the immigration departments data before the ‘Foreigner Supevi-sion Team’ undertakes their duties on the ground.

According to Tjok Juli, the reason that there is a discrepancy in the data is because some of the foreigners did not apply for their ITAS, ITAB, IMTA and other visas.

The formation of this team will ensure that no foreigners enter Bali (including Tabanan) illegally nor will any foreigners work without first obtaining the required docu-ments. (kmb24)

MANILA — Allegations that the Philip-pine presidential election frontrunner had millions of dollars in an undeclared bank account have not been resolved after the accuser confronted the mayor’s lawyer at

the bank.Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s lawyer said

he had asked that the account be opened to prove the allegations are false but that bank officials told him Monday it would take a

week to study the request. The election is scheduled next Monday.

Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV has alleged that Duterte had more than 200 million pesos ($4.2 million) in 2014 in a joint bank ac-

count with his daughter that was not publicly declared as required by law.

Duterte has led in public support surveys and it remains to be seen whether the allega-tion will hurt his popularity. (ap)

Valls stopped off in Australia while headed to New Zealand for a scheduled visit, just days after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said France had beaten out Japan and Germany for the A$50 billion ($38 billion) contract.

Valls said he would personally oversee the drafting of the contract, one of the world’s biggest defence deals, between France’s state-owned naval contractor DCNS Group and Australia over the next few months.

“We would like to conclude as soon as possible this contract,” Valls told reporters through an inter-preter after meeting Turnbull.

“We will now deliver on all of our commitments .. the choice of the Australian contract was to have the 12 submarines built in Australia and that

was the basis of our agreement.”Comments by DCNS chief

Hervé Guillou last week that the deal would create about 4,000 jobs in French shipyards caused consternation in Australia, where the contract was heavily sold as a local build. The deal will likely play a critical role in Australia’s general election due on July 2, with it ex-pected to shore up support for the ruling Liberal Party-led coalition in the state of South Australia where the bulk of benefits will flow.

The victory for DCNS under-scored France’s strengths in de-veloping a compelling military-industrial bid, and was a blow for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s push to develop defence export capabilities as part of his security agenda.

Japan, with its Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries boat, had been seen as the early frontrunner, but their in-experience in global defence deals and an initial reluctance to say they would build in Australia saw them slip behind DCNS and Germany’s ThyssenKrupp AG.

“Right from the beginning it was supposed to be a partnership that would create jobs right from the beginning, so it is a win-win partnership,” Valls said.

DCNS’ share of the overall con-tract to build 12 submarines will amount to about 8 billion euros ($9.02 billion), according to sources with knowledge of the deal.

Turnbull said the potential to transition the fleet into a nuclear-powered one was not a factor in the decision.

Australia is increasing defence spending, seeking to protect inter-ests in the Asia-Pacific as the United States and its allies grapple with China’s rising power. (rtr)

TAIPEI - Taiwan Sunday sent two patrol ships to waters surrounding a Japanese atoll amid a dispute over the seizure of one of the island’s fishing boats.

The detention of the “Tung Sheng Chi 16” near Okinotori-shima last week angered Taiwanese officials, who say Tokyo has no author-ity over the area.

A Taiwanese coast guard ship and another from the Council of Ag-riculture departed from the southern port of Kaoshiung Sunday.

“Japan has no right to ban our fishing boats from the area,” Taiwan’s coast guard adminstration said in a statement.

“The government will resolutely defend the rights and freedom of our fisherman in international waters.”

The mission will last for one to three months.Between 100-200 Taiwanese boats fish in the waters around

Okinotori-shima each year.Japan say it has exclusive rights in the 200 nautical mile area sur-

rounding the uninhabited atoll in the Philippine Sea.But in addition to Taiwan, China and South Korea also reject the

Japanese claim.Taiwan’s defence ministry said it also plans to deploy warships to

“appropriate waters” but spokesman David Lo declined to elaborate. The maritime row is straining normally friendly relations between

Taipei and Tokyo. It follows a stand-off more than three years ago over a chain of is-

lands in the East China Sea, when coastguard vessels from both sides attacked each other with water cannons.

The islands -- known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese -- are controlled by Japan but claimed by both China and Taiwan.

But in 2013 Japan and Taiwan forged a fisheries agreement covering the waters off the island chain. (afp)

BANGLI - The District of Bangli has a diversity of cultural practices that are unique to this area. However in the face of the modernity and the global era, many of these are gradually fading away and it would seem that neither the government nor the general public are doing much to encourage their continued existence.

An artist from Bangli, named I.B. Ngurah Made Yasa and nick-named Gus Topok, said the district of Bangli has a lot of potential as a

tourist attraction not just in terms of its natural beauty but also in terms of its culture. Ever since the new millennia however, with the swift current of technology and globalization, these unique cul-tural practices have been increas-ingly marginalized. “Technology is developing rapidly and many people are switching away form community based cultural activi-ties towards something else”, said Gus Topok.

Gus Topok cited the example

of Drama Gong performances that were still being routinely rehearsed and performed from hamlet to ham-let and village to village. Nowa-days it is only ever performed and watched on certain specific days and even this seems forced. “In the past, people would to watch even thought they had to pay. Now even thought eh performances are free people are reluctant to watch, let alone be asked to learn” he said with regret.

Not only is the public compla-

cent about preserving the arts but apparently the government is too. The only time that thee arts are paid any attention is just before big events like the Bali Arts Festival, but there is no effort to sustain them afterwards. If things continue like this these arts will not survive, he said. “Preservation efforts are not made as intensively as in the past. Now the government only pays at-tention on certain occasions” said Gus Topok.

According to this artist from

Cempaga village, the government of Bangli and the community must work together. The artists who have contributed to the region need to be empowered and the arts studios that still survive today need to be and therefore they need to be con-cerned about the development of the arts. “To maintain this culture, all avenues must be embraced, one of which is educational institu-tions, that should be obliged to hold culture-related extracurricular activities” he said. In the run up to their play titled The Phantom Of Opera, the Grades 9 and 11 students have been successful in stirring everyone’s imagination with each of us expecting some very riveting performances by the main leads. The main parts played by Calvin (as the disfigured Phantom); Audrey(as Christine the obscure chorus girl, whom the Phantom falls in love with); Arjun and Daniel (as Monsieur Firmin and Monsieur Andre respectively); Gaby, Selena and Prasasti (as Carlotta, Madame Giry and Meg Giry respectively) Caesar (as Raoul the former childhood friend of Christine who develops romantic feelings for him) and Guapo and Samartha (as Pi-angi and Leftere). Angelita as the student director supported and guided all actors to bring out the best in them. With their histrionics these creative students have exceeded our expectations and brought out

the rudiments of romance, terror, jealousy and ambition. The dancers added glamour with their colourful costumes and fine moves. The choir and orchestra added to the play’s finesse. The play had all the essentials that has surely made the night out memorable for the audience. These creative students have brought alive the Opera House Populaire right in front of our eyes on stage.

Full accolades are reserved for the direc-tor Ms. Vinita Tomar who has efficiently coached the actors, the talented dance directors Ms. Jen and Ms. Alicia (for direct-ing students with amazing dance moves on stage) , the Stage and Prop artists Mr. Ketut, Mr. Widhi and Mr. Pras( who have designed mind blowing stage get ups), the costume directors/designers (who make the actors look authentic with respect to time and place) , the music director Mr. Nico and

also others who have worked tirelessly for the success of the musical night. Publicity, brochure making and posters have been very well handled by Mr. Emil.

The staging of the play is an out of the box experience for the students, the teach-ers and the staff involved. The theatrical performances by students showcases Page to Stage where the students see that the things learned in classrooms can be ap-plied in the real world. Different people working collaboratively bring forth their perspectives and appreciate other peoples’ belvederes. The students appreciate to learn and work collaboratively and in the process enjoy doing it. The students feel proud that all plays staged by the Junior, Middle and Senior wings of GMIS are linked to a good cause when all the money collected for the play via CAS food sales, play fund-raiser activities, sale of play T-shirts etc.is donated for charity to SDN 1 Renon Denpasar.

The full credit to bringing theatre to GMIS-Bali goes to our worthy Principal Ms. J. Biswas who has always guided us when the things seemed too daunting at first glance. The play is supported by the supervisor Mr. Ravi Gandhi. This year has been the third year in the running when the plays are being staged in GMIS. We hope to create a legacy with more and more such memorable plays and for years to come.

MANGUPURA - A 51 year tourist from the Netherlands, named Robertus Leonardus T. Van Reisen, was left bleeding on Jalan Pantain Kuta after being hit over the head with a wheel brace on Monday (Apr 25). The suspected culprit is 31 year taxi driver named Ketut WA who was arrested the following day on Jalan Kebo Iwa in Denpasar.

Chief of Kuta Police, Wayan Sumara, when asked to confirmation the details of the case on Sunday (May. 1) said that the suspect is being detained while waiting for further legal proceedings.

The victim along with his sons and friends, hailed the suspects taxi in front of Euro Shop on Jalan Pantai Kuta after having been shopping.

“When the victim asked to be taken to Hotel Intercontinental where he was staying, the taxi driver instead turned west back towards the beach. The victim immediately asked the driver to stop the car as he was familiar with the route that should have been taken, having been to Kuta man times before”, said Sumara.

The taxi driver insisted that the victim pay him the IDR 7,000 charge for starting the meter, but the victim refused. An argument ensued and the taxi driver allegedly hit the victim who was sitting next to him in the front seat with his elbow. All the passengers immediately left the taxi. The taxi driver allegedly got out of the car too and proceeded to hit the elderly Dutch man over the head with a wheel brace.

“After beating the victim, the perpetrator ran away” said this former chief of intelligence and security unit of the Badung Police.

After reporting the incident to the police the victim went back to his hotel where he received medical treatment from a medical care team. “We summoned the victim to deepen his report. From his testimony and that of other witnesses, we were able to a certain the identity of the suspected taxi driver” he said.

Based on the results of their investigation, police arrested the suspect on Jalan Kebo Iwa, Padangsambian on Tuesday at 17:30. While be-ing interrogated, the suspect confessed and was immediately taken to the police station.

“This incident can disgrace of the reputation of Bali. We encourage taxi drivers to be more polite and friendly when handling travelers and maintain a positive image of Bali tourism” said Sumara. (kmb36)

The department filed suit April 6 to block the merger of Halliburton and Baker Hughes. It claims the transaction would unlawfully elimi-nate significant competition in almost two dozen markets crucial to the exploration and production of oil and natural gas in the United States.

“The companies’ decision to abandon this transaction — which would have left many oilfield service markets in the hands of a duopoly — is a victory for the U.S. economy and for all Americans,” Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch said in a statement on Sunday.

Justice officials said the merger of Halliburton and Baker Hughes would have raised prices, decreased output and lessened innovation in at least 23 oilfield products and services critical to the nation’s energy supply.

As part of the agreement, Hal-liburton will pay Baker Hughes the termination fee of $3.5 billion by Wednesday, according to a joint release from the companies.

“While both companies expected the proposed merger to result in compelling benefits to shareholders, customers and other stakeholders, challenges in obtaining remaining regulatory approvals and general

industry conditions that severely damaged deal economics led to the conclusion that termination is the best course of action,” Dave Lesar, Halliburton’s chairman and CEO, said.

“Today’s outcome is disappoint-ing because of our strong belief in the vast potential of the business combination to deliver benefits for shareholders, customers and both companies’ employees,” Martin Craighead, Baker Hughes’ chair-man and CEO, said.

Halliburton and Baker Hughes announced their plan to combine in November 2014, shortly after oil prices began to fall. Few, however, predicted the depth and duration of lower prices caused by a global oversupply of oil. The glut slowed demand for drilling services and crushed the stock price of both companies.

The Justice Department indi-cated its concern about the acqui-sition in a lawsuit it filed against ValueAct Capital, a hedge fund that had bought more than $2.5 billion in stock of Halliburton and Baker Hughes.

The department said in the lawsuit that a Halliburton-Baker Hughes merger “threatens to sub-

stantially lessen competition in numerous markets.”

Europe’s top regulator, the Euro-

pean Commission, said it had also had concerns about the deal. It said that it had investigated its potential

impact on competition together with regulators in the U.S., Brazil and Australia.(ap)

BAGHDAD — Iraq says April crude oil exports have increased by 2.3 percent from the previous month, filling cash-strapped coffers amid an acute economic crisis.

Oil Ministry spokesman Assem Jihad, said Sunday that daily oil exports averaged 3.364 million barrels last month, worth $3.343 billion. March exports stood at 3.286 million barrels per day, bringing that month’s revenues to $2.9 billion.

Jihad added that last month’s average price was $33.257 per barrel. Iraq’s 2016 budget is based on an expected price of $45 per barrel.

Iraq holds the world’s fourth largest oil reserves, and oil rev-enues make up nearly 95 percent of its budget. Its economy was badly hit by the plunge in oil prices at a time when Baghdad is struggling to combat the Islamic State group.(ap)

“Until now, we have never claimed that the government did it (paid ransom for the hostages) because we never did it,” the minister stated at the Presidential Palace here on Monday in response to the news distributed by media in the Philippines that the hostages were released after paying a ransom.

The minister was also reluctant to respond to claims that the company had paid the ransom. “It is the business of the company. I do not want to give any comment on it,”

he noted.A total of 10 Indonesian crew members

aboard tugboat Brahma 12, which was towing a barge loaded with coal, were released by members of the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group on Sunday afternoon (May 1).

They were abducted while sailing to the waters of Sulu in southern Philippines on March 26, 2016.

The Abu Sayyaf group had demanded a ransom worth 50 million pesos, or some Rp14.3 billion, for the release of the 10 Indo-

nesian hostages. The 10 Indonesian sailors were imme-

diately flown in from the Air Force Base Zamboanga to Indonesia, and they arrived on Sunday night in Jakarta Province.

Currently, they are undergoing a medical examination at the Central Army Hospital in Jakarta before being sent home to their families.

Four Indonesian citizens are still being held hostage in southern Philippines. The minister stated that the government continued to work to secure the release of the four Indonesians.

“This afternoon, at 1 p.m. local time, we will hold an evaluation meeting with the re-lated ministries and agencies,” he remarked.(ant)

SLEMAN - The Archaeological Center of Yogyakarta will conduct a research on the World War II-era Van den Bosch Fort in Ngawi, East Java Province.

“We will conduct a research on Fort Van den Bosch for the second time next year,” a researcher of Defense Facilities From the Second World War Muhammad Chawari stated here on Monday.

According to Chawari, the Fort Van den Bosch along with Fort Vas-tenburg in Surakarta in Central Java and Fort Vredeburg in Yogyakarta are defense buildings constructed during the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia.

“The fort from the Dutch colonial era during the Second World War in Ngawi is similar to the one found in Solo (Central Java) and Yogyakarta,” he pointed out.

Chawari remarked that the Archae-ology Center had earlier conducted a research on Japanese defense fa-cilities, such as bunkers and caves, in the provinces of Yogyakarta, Central Java, and East Java.

“The research work on Japans defense facilities has been completed. We will just prepare a report, and it will serve as a scientific journal for learning,” Chawari revealed.

The research on Japanese war fa-cilities has been conducted in Sleman and Bantul in Yogyakarta; Purworejo, Cilacap, Kebumen, Brebes, Tegal, Banyumas, Jepara, Kudus, and Pati in Central Java; and Lumajang, Jember, Banyuwangi, and Madura in East Java, among others.

“There are several caves and bunkers from the Japanese colonial era that have not yet been explored. Many of them have not been exposed, especially the ones located on the hillside,” he added.(ant)

JAYAPURA - Agustinus Donald Ohee, a tribal leader from Jayapura District, Papua Province, lauded President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) for paying serious attention to the development of all sectors in the Indonesian easternmost province.

“President Jokowis recent visit to Papua for several days was viewed as part of his commitment to improving the welfare of the indigenous people of Papua,” Ohee

remarked here on Monday. To this end, he noted that the

Papua tribal community would reciprocate the presidents gesture through enthusiasm and hard work. “The indigenous people of Papua, especially the chiefs, will be in one accord and join hands to support the development in Papua,” he affirmed.

Over the weekend, President Jokowi was in Papua to conduct

the groundbreaking ceremony of the Mama-Mana cultural market in Jayapura, the capital of the province. To be built on a four thousand-square-meter plot of land in the Jayapura city center, the market is expected to sup-port local economic development.

“I urge the relevant ministers to complete the construction of the market in a short period of time,” President Jokowi remarked in his speech at the time. He said the gov-

ernment was making efforts to build the Mama-Mama market quickly without flouting any rules.

During the visit, President Jokowi also inaugurated the De-papre Port in Jayapura District as one of the sea toll gateways in East Indonesia.

“This will be a great seaport and will be interconnected with the me-dium and small port hubs,” President Jokowi stated here, Saturday.

The president emphasized that the inauguration of Depapre Port, as a sea toll gateway, was expected to help ship out Papuas products without the need to transition at other sea ports.

“Therefore, we expect that Pap-uas products can be sent directly to the destination country without having to ship the goods to the ports of Makassar or Surabaya first,” the president explained.(ant)

Carnival Corp.’s 704-passenger Adonia left port at 4:24 p.m., bound for Havana. Carnival’s Cuba cruises, operating under its Fathom brand, will also visit the ports of Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba on the seven-day outing. Several Cuba-born passengers, among hundreds of others, were aboard, it said.

The cruise comes after Cuba loosened its policy banning Cu-ban-born people from arriving to the country by sea, a rule that threatened to stop the cruises from happening.

Restarting the cruises was an important element of a bid by Presi-dent Barack Obama’s administra-tion’s to increase tourism to Cuba after the Dec. 17, 2014, decision to restore diplomatic relations and move toward normalization.

The most recent such cruise, from another U.S. port, was in 1978.

When it first announced the cruises, Carnival said it would bar Cuban-born passengers due to the government’s policy. But the Cuban-American community in Miami complained and filed a discrimination lawsuit in response. After that, the company said it would only sail to Cuba if the policy changed, which Cuba did on April 22.

Carnival said the Adonia will cruise every other week from Mi-ami to Cuba. Bookings will start at $1,800 per person and feature an array of cultural and educational activities, including Spanish les-sons, Carnival’s website says.

Seventy-three-year-old pas-senger Rick Schneider told The Sun-Sentinel that he had waited decades for the chance to make the journey. He bought a Cuban flag for the occasion, which he waved from the deck at protesters who opposed the cruises.

He said he once passed up taking a ferry trip to Cuba in 1957, adding “the time is now.”

The cruise is among the many changes in U.S.-Cuban relations since a thaw between the former Cold War foes began in late 2014. The thaw also led to a historic, two-day trip to Cuba in March by Obama, who met with Cuban coun-terpart Raul Castro and others.

The Cuban government says the shift in policy removes prohibitions enacted when Cuban exiles were launching attacks by sea after the first Cuban revolution.

On Sunday, Arnold Donald, Carnival’s president and CEO, said the company worked and prepared to make the cruises a reality despite the challenges.

“Times of change often bring out emotions and clearly the his-tories here are very emotional for a number of people,” Donald told reporters.” (ap)

TIBET - The bodies of top mountaineer Alex Lowe and his cameraman have been found in a Himalayan glacier, 16 years after they were buried by an avalanche on one of the world’s highest mountains.

Two climbers last week came across the men’s remains “still encased in blue ice but beginning to emerge from the glacier”, a foundation set up in Lowe’s memory said in a statement.

Lowe, 40, and expedition cameraman David Bridges, 29, both American, were swept away by a massive snow and ice avalanche on the 8,027-metre (26,335-foot) Shisha Pangma peak in China in October 1999 while attempting the first American ski descent.

Conrad Anker, who survived the avalanche and went on to marry Lowe’s widow and adopt their three sons, said the discovery had brought “closure and relief” to the family.

They will travel to the Tibetan mountain -- one of only 14 in the world measuring over 8,000 metres -- to retrieve the bodies.

“Alex’s parents are thankful to know that their son’s body has been found and that Conrad, the boys and I will make our pilgrim-age to Shisha Pangma,” said Lowe’s widow Jennifer Lowe-Anker in the statement, released Friday.

The couple were in Nepal when they heard the news, oversee-ing the construction of a new building for the Khumbu Climbing Centre which trains local mountain workers.

The centre was established in 2003 in memory of Lowe, who had climbed Everest twice and had strong ties with Nepal.

He ranked among the world’s top mountaineers before his death, and was nicknamed the Lung With Legs after a high-speed ascent of Argentina’s Aconcagua, the tallest peak in the Americas.

Climbers David Goettler and Ueli Steck discovered the bod-ies as they were acclimatising for an ascent on the south face of Shisha Pangma.

The mountain, which was closed to westerners until 1978, is considered relatively accessible among the 8,000-metre peaks.

Many expedition organisers recommend that climbers attempt it as part of their training before turning their attention to higher mountains. (afp)

SEOUL - South Korea’s Park Tae-hwan got down on his knees and begged for the chance to compete at the Rio Games on Monday as the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) shows no signs of lift-ing the additional doping sanctions it has imposed on the swimmer.

Park was banned for 18 months by governing body FINA after testing posi-tive for testosterone ahead of the 2014 Asian Games, and while the ban expired in March he must now wait three more years before he can be considered for selection under KOC rules.

Despite the ban, Park decided to com-pete at last week’s national trials anyway and won the 100m, 200m, 400m and 1,500m freestyle events. He swam the fourth fastest time of the year in winning the 400m, clocking 3 minutes, 44.26 seconds.

The 26-year-old, who won gold in the 400m freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Games to become the first Korean to win an Olympic swimming medal, told a news conference at Incheon City Hall on Mon-day he wanted the chance to make amends

for his mistake.“As a swimmer, I feel it is most impor-

tant to speak through records and results in the pool,” he added. “I hope that I am given a chance so that I can deliver a good performance for the people and contribute to the nation.”

Given Park’s profile in Korea, and amid criticism that the KOC regulation punishes an athlete twice for the same of-fence, speculation grew that it may relax the rule to give the swimmer the chance to compete at the Rio Olympics.

However, the KOC said last month it was “not appropriate to amend national team selection regulations for a specific person”.

Park’s image as the golden boy of Korean sport was shattered early last year when it emerged he had tested positive for testosterone ahead of the Incheon Asian Games.

He attributed the failed test to an injec-tion he received at a local clinic, where he said he was being treated for a skin com-plaint and where he also had some vitamin shots and chiropractic treatment. (rtr)

“We’ve always said that they’ve been close but this weekend they were not close at all,” Mercedes winner and championship leader Nico Rosberg told reporters after his seventh win in succession on Sunday.

“We were really far ahead this weekend and that’s been impres-sive to see.”

Rosberg said the unique charac-teristics of the Sochi asphalt might have accounted for some of the advantage but Ferrari team princi-pal Maurizio Arrivabene was not looking for excuses.

His post-race telephone conver-sation with hard-minded company president Sergio Marchionne was not going to give him any pleasure either.

“For sure he is not going to be amused,” said the Italian.

Even bad luck, with four-times world champion Sebastian Vettel taken out at the start when Red Bull’s Russian Daniil Kvyat twice drove into the back of him, could not hide the failings.

Vettel was seventh on the grid, and next to Kvyat, only because of a penalty for an earlier gearbox

failure and replacement.Kimi Raikkonen, who took

Ferrari’s 700th grand prix podium, finished third but 31 seconds behind Rosberg who had already turned down his power unit and had no need to push.

“On the Sochi circuit yes, I was surprised,” said Arrivabene. “Believe me: I don’t want this to happen again.

“I don’t think things can be explained as bad luck, there are mostly human mistakes behind the story.”

Arrivabene said Ferrari had to improve reliability. He felt sure, however, that the car had yet to show its true potential and the com-bination of more favourable tracks and engine tweaks would help.

Raikkonen agreed, even if the task was formidable with Mercedes having won the last 10 races and 36 out of 42 since the start of 2014.

“We know quite a few small things that we want to improve, and we know that there’s some improvements coming,” said the Finn. “But Mercedes were very fast for the last few years and they are fast this year. (rtr)

TABANAN - Soka beach has been known since long ago, as it is passed by travelers during their travel from Denpasar-Gilimanuk or vice versa. The site has a very beautiful scenery. The west part bounded by hills which is a part of Mount Batukaru in the north. While in the south is Indian ocean where Banyuwangi in Java is faintly vis-ible from Soka. Vast rice fields and lush coconut groves enhance the beautiful scenery. Moreover, later when the sun is about to set, the view on top of Pura Luhur Serijong is comparable to the view in Tanah Lot.

Soka beach is located in a quiet village of Selemadeg District, 45 kilometers from Denpasar and 84 kilometers from Gilimanuk, along the Java-Bali main road. No wonder countless vehicle passes the area everyday.

Next to the east coast of Soka there is a cave on a rock cliff, called cave Bulung Daya as many swiftlet live in this cave. On the west coast stretching along the palm garden, an accomodation service “Balian Beach

Bungalow” and the Balian river is one of the best raft-ing spot in Bali.

Near to the Soka beach, a large parking lot is avail-able. There are also few places for visitors to eat, drink, and shop for local snacks while resting before continue departing on their journey. On religious holidays and full moon (Purnama), the beach is crowded with visi-tors and Hindu followers who are conducting religious ceremonies.

For those who enjoy fishing the sea, they can join the local fishermen while they are sailing to the sea, using traditional boats using outboard engines or sails.

Soka Beach is located 40 km from Denpasar or 25 km west of the city of Tabanan, right on the Denpasar-Gilimanuk road section. Soka Beach has beautiful scenery and is great for a place to rest or stop over. On this beach lies a large pot of rock and an old kitchen belongs to Kebo Iwa as mentioned in the popular local legend. Vardy, who built his career away from the spotlight at Stocks-b r i d g e , H a l i f a x a n d F l e e t w o o d To w n , b e c a m e the first player to score in 11 con-secutive Premier League matches earlier this season.

“The Jamie Vardy story clearly cap-tured the imagination of so many writ-ers,” FWA Chairman Andy Dunn told Reuters. “His record-breaking feat of scoring in 11 consecutive matches is the jewel in what will surely be Leicester City’s Premier League crown.

“And the Footballer of the Year award is not just a reflection of his fantastic season but recognition of a remarkable journey from non-league to the international stage.”

Vardy, who won 36 percent of the vote, is the first Englishman to win the award since Scott Parker in 2011 and the first Leicester player to win it since it was started in 1948.

In winning the award, he beat team mates Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante, who fin-ished second and third, while Danny Drink-water, Kasper Schmeichel, Wes Morgan and Danny Simpson were the other Leic-ester players who received votes.

“It is testament to their all-round excellence that so many Leicester play-ers polled votes from our members,” Dunn added.

Leicester, who lead the division by eight points ahead of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur, need two points from their last two games to lift the title and could be crowned champions if Spurs fail to beat Chelsea on Monday night.

Vardy, who was suspended for Leices-ter’s last two games, will return to the side for their home match against Everton next Saturday. (rtr)

Jamie Vardy celebrates after scoring the second goal for Leicester

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has been voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association (FWA). The 29-year-old has scored 22 league goals to help fire his team from 5,000-1 outsiders to odds-on favourites to win the Premier League title for the first time this season.

MILAN — Juventus celebrated another Serie A title with a 2-0 victory over Carpi in a party atmosphere in Turin on Sunday. Juventus had already clinched its fifth successive title before kicking a ball after Napoli lost 1-0 at Roma on Monday.

There was no sign of a celebration hangover as Hernanes scored his first goal for the club before substitute Simone Zaza wrapped up the points late on.

“It was the most difficult match because we came into it after a week of celebration and a few days holi-day,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “We mustn’t forget that we still have the Italian Cup final and we mustn’t take our foot off the gas because then it’s difficult to get going again.”

Carpi remained outside the relega-tion zone but is now above 18th-placed Palermo only on goal difference after the Sicilian side beat Sampdoria 2-0. Frosinone are four points behind in 19th after wasting a two-goal lead in a 3-3 draw at AC Milan.

Jeremey Menez netted a stoppage-time penalty for Milan. Mario Balot-elli, who had an earlier penalty saved, also hit the bar with the last kick of the match.

“It’s not right to say that we are disunited and that we gave them too

much space,” Milan coach Cristian Brocchi said. “Conceding three goals at home to Frosinone is not the Milan way ... Despite everything I also saw some positive things today.”

Milan has fallen to seventh spot. It is a point below Sassuolo, which beat Hellas Verona 1-0 to leapfrog the Rossoneri into sixth, which is likely to be the final Europa League qualifying berth.

Lazio still has faint hopes after beating Inter Milan 2-0 to move to within four points of Sassuolo. Inter’s defeat also means Roma is guaran-teed at least a spot in the Champions League playoffs. There are two rounds remaining. Also, Empoli drew 0-0 against Bologna.

Despite having clinched the title, there was no sign of Juventus easing up as it secured its 25th victory in 26 matches. It has not conceded a goal at home in 2016. Hernanes broke the deadlock three minutes from halftime with a low shot from outside the area that squeezed in between Carpi goal-keeper Vid Belec and the right post.

Zaza doubled Juve’s lead with 10 minutes remaining, sending a power-ful header from Paul Pogba’s cross into the far side of the net.

With Carpi having played earlier, Frosinone knew a win would move it to within a point of safety and it got

off to the perfect start as Luca Paganini gave it the lead in the second minute.

Alex almost leveled but saw his header edged onto the crossbar before Oliver Kragl doubled Frosinone’s lead with a 30-yard free kick on the stroke of halftime. Milan should have got back into the match straight after the break but Frosinone stand-in goalkeeper Francesco Bardi saved Balotelli’s penalty following Adriano Russo’s handball.

Carlos Bacca did score for Milan minutes later after a mistake from Bardi, who allowed a cross to squirm between him and the near post for the Colombia forward to tap into an empty net.

Federico Dionisi restored Frosi-none’s two-goal advantage almost im-mediately before Keisuke Honda had a goal ruled out for Milan in a frantic first 15 minutes of the second half.

Milan did reduce the deficit again in the 74th minute as substitute Luca Antonelli scored a stunning goal mo-ments after coming on, chesting down the ball with his back to goal and firing it in with an overhead kick.

Milan was awarded another pen-alty in stoppage time following Vasyl Pryima’s handball. Menez stepped up and Bardi came close to also saving his spot kick but it went into the bottom left corner.(ap)

Southampton manager Ron-ald Koeman has urged Sadio Mane to show greater con-sistency after the striker scored a hat-trick to guide his team to a 4-2 victory against Manchester City on Sunday.

The Senegal-born strik-er has endured a mixed season for Southamp-ton, scoring 10 league goals so far, but failing to find the back of the net in 19 league appearances between November and March.

The 24-year-old is, h o w e v e r , finishing the campaign strongly with his hat-trick against City taking his tally to seven goals in his last six league appearances. Koeman said the inconsistency was down to his

youth.“Sadio is a little bit un-

predictable sometimes,” the manager told Brit-ish media. “He’s still a young player, and

young players they need sometimes to be more consistent.

“Sadio was focused and clinical (on Sun-day). That was one

of my criticisms of all of the strikers but we are very productive at home

with more chances to score more.”

His hopes of reaching a first Champions League final since his Barcelona side beat Manchester United 3-1 in 2011 were dented after Saul Niguez’s brilliant solo goal gave Atletico a 1-0 first-leg victory.

With Guardiola leaving for Manchester City at the season’s end, this is his last chance to conquer Europe with Bayern, who won the first of their five European Cups by defeating Atletico in the 1974 final.

“It’s not over yet, we still have a chance,” Guardiola told reporters. “If we lose it, you can kill me, but we still have a chance.” Atletico coach Diego Simeone also believes the tie is open.

“Playing in Munich means they’ll have their fans supporting them, but we have the opportunity to score an away goal.”

“We need to be on fire on Tuesday,” said Thomas Mueller, who shone as Bayern were held 1-1 by

Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday and were consequently made to wait for their fourth consecutive Bundesliga title.

Mueller’s return was one of eight changes from the Atletico match made by Bayern, who were boosted by the return of Jerome Boateng, who had not featured since January.

Arjen Robben, sidelined for two months with a hamstring injury, says that he is “fighting” to return this season but will miss out, while Guardiola confirmed he

does not know whether Franck Ribery will recover from a back complaint.

“We’ll do everything we can to have Franck back,” said Guardiola, who is also without defender Holger

Diego Simeone’s Atletico are finishing strongly in Spain, having won their last six league games and keeping four consecutive clean sheets.

They are level on points with La Liga leaders Barcelona after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 on Saturday.

“It’ll be a close game like today’s match,” said Simeone after the Rayo game. “We’ll see who makes the most of their chances.”

(afp)

BUSINESS

Covering his wound with a towel, the vic-tim reported the incident to the police post on Kuta Beach.

(kmb36)

The Phantom of the OperaOUR school dominions for the past few couple of weeks has been reverberat-

ing with haunting melodies, attractive ballets, countless melodramatic delibera-tions and all-round excitement buzz. The reason for such excitement was our Senior School’s (Grades 9 and 11) musical extravaganza which was just round the corner and all such activities being the part of practices that were being carried out with all industriousness leading to the final staging of the play. Not only those involved; the actors, director(s), artists doing up the props, public-ity team, the CAS team , various teachers and staff on duty with lights , props etc. but also those who had been witness to this creative head over heal rush to complete a near perfect project seemed fully excited with anticipation.

(kmb24)

“There had been many complaints about him such as eating at restaurants without paying, carrying a knife, and harassing people, but every time we called him in for questioning, he never showed up,” Bali police spokesman Hery Wiyanto. Around 40 police and immigration officials came to arrest the 49-year-old after discovering that his tourist visa had run out in September.

But as they arrived at his residence in Canggu, a village popular with foreign tourists, Sabet emerged bran-dishing a knife. “One of our officers tried to approach him and calm him down, but Sabet stabbed him,” said

Wiyanto, adding that the officer died from his wounds.

Police then gave Sabet 3 warnings but as these were ignored, they shot him several times, Wiyanto said.Im-ages and graphic videos circulating online showed Sabet waving a knife and later lying on the ground. The French embassy in Jakarta said it had been informed of the death and was in contact with police.

Such flare-ups of violence are rare in Bali, a pocket of Hinduism in Muslim-majority Indonesia that attracts millions of foreign tourists to its palm-fringed beaches every year.(rah)

(rtr)

P E o -PlE looking to enjoy the

wordly plea-sures of nightlife

divide their time between night-clubs, cafes, discotheques, karaoke bars and other entertainment centers. Kuta, known as the tourism village has become the center for nightlife on the island and slowly but surely Legian has become a favored destination.

However the presence of these entertainment spots -so enamored by tourists, clearly bring both positive and negative effects. One of the negative effects of of this sector of tourism is that apart from enjoying the beauty of Bali’s nature and culture tourists come to revel throwing their money around and many tourists have become vic-tims of crime ranging from molesta-tion to violence and robbery.

“For this reason, those who man-

age nightlife facilitites need to come up with security systems, be they high tech or manual so as to prevent crimes form taking place. If possible they should provide the same kind of security that is found in airports in order to prevent people form entering with sharp weapons and other harmful things”, said Kadek Agus Mulyawan, SH who is both a lawyer and owner of tourist accommodations, on Sunday (Apr, 1).

Mulyawan went on to say that managers should be able to ensure the security of their clients especially foreign tourists to whom they are rep-resenting tourism in Bali. Clearly there also needs to be cooperation between the police and village security forces.

“If for example there is a case of someone being molested by a drunk person, there has to be proof. Someone being drunk is already contravening Article 492 KUHP of the law. In such

a case it would have to be recorded that being drunk is different than what Article 536 KUHP describes as drunk”, he said.

“This goes for anyone, including Indonesian citizens. The legal process must be firm, in the same way that we are processed if we create a scene overseas”, he explained Mulyawan.
