Frank Agulhas, skoolhoof, is bekommerd

City of Cape Town executive mayor, Patri-cia deLille, officially opened thenewly-ren-ovated Blue Downs Golf Driving Range onSaturday with a swing as smooth as cancome. Her swing was, of course, not what the

daywas about, but rather the driving rangeand the new opportunities on the green andrange for the local community. The driving range has been upgraded

thanks to a partnership between the city’sSport, Recreation and Amenities Depart-ment and the Blue Downs Golf Club.Construction of the Blue Downs Golf

Driving Range started in late 2009. The lat-est renovations, including alterations tothe clubhouse and facility equipment, mean that work is now complete – at a totalcost of R1,8 million. The City-owned facility is managed by

the Blue Downs Golf Club. Through theCity’sExpandedPublicWorksProgramme,12 jobs have already been created, and theCity intends to employ another four work-ers over a six-month period. The sport of golf started to develop in the

Blue Downs and Eerste River areas in 1994,when a small group of keen golfers ear-marked a piece of land in order to developgolf and curb crime and drug abuse in thecommunity. The intention is to teach theyouth the values of sportsmanship and self-discipline.V Visit www.tygerburger.co.za for more photos.

The greens atBlue Downs

Cape Town's executive mayor, Patricia de Lille, shows she is no beginner at golf.

The achievements of Keenan Michau on theathletics track reads like a dream and youcan’t help wonder what the future holds forthis gifted youngster. Keenan is the Tyger-Burger Sportstar of the Month winner.

The 18-year-old from Bernadino HeightsSecondary School inKraaifontein is a speed-ster of note in the 100 m and 200 m events.

Last year he won the Western Cape boysu-17 100 m and 200 m final. He was also aSouth African youth men 100 m and 200 mfinalist.

In the same year he was also crowned theSA boys’ u-17 100 m champion.

His record this year reads as follows: SAsenior men 4 x 100 m relay champion. SAjunior men 200 m silver medallist.

On provincial level he is theWesternCapeschool boys’ u-19 100 m and 200 m championand the club junior men’s 100 m and 200 mchampion.

His personal best time for the 100 m is10.47 s and the 200 m is 21.31 s.

“It is an honour for me to be the Tyger-Burger Sportstar of the Month. It also feelsgood to be number one, but the reality is thatthe hard work only starts now. You neverknowwho iswaiting for you in thenext race,so I’m working hard to keep my position,”said Keenan.

Keenan received a gift pack from Super-Sport’s Let’s Play initiative. Hennie Bosmanfrom the Welgemoed Kyokushin-kan dojogave him R1 000 and Bosman, McNulty andDuToit Optometrists gave him a pair of sun-glasses of his choice.

Western Province sent three teams to theinter-provincial tournament hosted inPretoria by Tennis South Africa (TSA)and South African Schools Tennis (un-der-15 and u-19) whilst Bloemfonteinhosted the u-13s.

The u-13 team had a shaky start as theywere still adjusting to the high tempera-tures and altitude. Adapting quickly, theymanaged towin all their group-stagegames as well as the quarter-finalsagainst Eastern Province and the semi-fi-nal against Gauteng Central.

They went on the beat the hosts in athrilling final 25-23, bringing home thegold.

WP u-15s and u-19s had everything toprove after the u-19s were placed 11th in

last year’s inter-provincial tournament. The u-15 team showed true grit, ending

the tournament as runners-up toGautengCentral after being seeded fifth despiteone of the players collapsing and beinghospitalised due to medical problems.

WP u-19s, however, swept all beforethem on their way to the gold.

In a fantastic team performance theywon 66 out of 72 singles matches. JoshLuck, Katie Poluta and Chelsea Stewardwere unbeaten in singles in the tourna-ment, while the entire team won morethan 95 % of all singles, doubles andmixed doubles matches during the tour-nament. Luck and Nina van der Berghheld on towin a keymixed doublesmatchto clinch the final for WP.

AjaxCapeTown’s battle to steer clearof the relegation zone suffered a set-back when they were beaten 2-0 by

Bidvest Wits at the Athlone Stadium onSaturday night. The result leaves the Parow side in the

relegation zone, behind Black Leopardsongoal difference, and three points aheadof fellow Mother City strugglers ChippaUnited. The Urban Warriors had Mabuthi

Khenyeza back in the starting line-up af-ter his two-match suspension for a send-ing off, but there was little for the frontman to feed off in the initial stages of theencounter.

ChancesThe early moments saw neither side

able to find much penetration up front, with the exception of a seventh minutechance for Ajax Cape Town , GranwaldScott having his header saved by EmileBaron, following Lebogang Manyama’scross.Bidvest Wits reply came via a couple of

long range efforts, but TinasheNengoma-sha had his effort blocked, while formerFree State Stars winger MzikayiseMashaba pushed his free kick left of goal.KhamaBilliat has been guilty of squan-

dering numerous chances of late for the

Parow side, andhe again failed to find thetarget with a right-footed effort, 18 yardsout in front of goal.Chances were then exchanged as

Khenyeza failed to connect with LanceDavids’ cross, while for Wits, Faty Papywas unable to draw a save from SanderWesterveld from the edge of the area, wh-lie Ryan Chapman was off the mark, missing the near post with a fierce effortfrom a tight angle in the 34th minute.

OpportunityItwasAjaxCapeTown thoughwhoend-

ed the opening stanza on the front foot,Abia Nale coming to the fore with a de-cent effort, his 40th minute opportunityfrom inside the box being dragged wideof goal for what had been Ajax CapeTown’s best chance of the game. But it is the visiting team who were to

score first, having given away possessioncheaply, the Parow side watched asSandile Sibande set up Sibusiso Vilakazito score from close range after 50 min-utes.Chanceswere fewand farbetweenafter

that, withAjaxCapeTownunable tomas-ter any kind of meaningful fight back.Andwith 10minutes to go, the Students

got the insurance goal they needed whenAsive Langwe headed in from Faty’scross following a swift counter -attackingmove.

’n feeverhaal.

Hier is Leon Loubser(o.18, silwer), Anneke Germishuys (o.16, goud), Danny Damon (afrigter), Zandri Bailey (o.20,silwer) en Derick Turner (o.16, brons).
