Garth, Theuns and Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels are the three artists you’ve chosen to perform at the concert at the Liqui-Fruit Am- phitheatre in Paarl on Satur- day 21 March 2015. Having sold over 100 000 cop- ies of his studio albums, it’s no wonder that Theuns Jordaan is a firm favourite among music fans. This is the third time he’s been cho- sen by TygerBurger readers to per- form at our concert. With a bit of luck, he may be con- vinced to perform his collaboration with Dr Victor. The two worked to- gether to record their version of the song, “Wie se kind is jy?”. Dr Victor doesn’t need much intro- duction. With The Rasta Rebels, he’s created hits like ““I Love to Truck”, which made him a household name in South Africa. Joining these heavyweights will be singer and songwriter Garth Taylor, who hit the local music scene in 1998 with his hit “Why”. “Here we want to appoint a multi-sectoralposter child to be the voice against crimethreats, but involve all children in makingtheir voices heard for their safety,” said DeJager.De Jager also pointed out that part of the

programme was already up and running, es-pecially now in theperiod of 16Days ofActiv-ism against violence against women andchildren.“We are already hosting some sessions, fa-

cilitated by the CPF under the leadership ofchairpersonKennethVisser andFaghmeedaAmeerodien of Preco.“With a newly elected CPF in place there

will be more projects launched in the next

three months, and feedback will be given tothe public through open meetings.”The police themselves will also be an es-

sential part of the five pillars, bymotivatingstaff to always perform their duties to thebest of their ability.“We want to encourage our officers to al-

ways be at their best when dealing with thepublic.”To facilitate this, officers who go that ex-

tra mile will be receiving awards.“I am confident that this plan will be gro-

wing into an important part of the safety ofall in this area. We just need the people tobecomepartners in this positive initiative,”concluded De Jager.

A unique project wants to take youth at riskoff the streets and into education.

Andre Morgan of the Metro Central Edu-cation Department heads the project whichis part of the President’s Award Initiativethat took some youth fromKalksteenfonteinandprovideda taste ofwhat they candowiththeir lives.

He explained that these youth, who werenot attending school, were identified byBishop Lavis SAPS.

“Some of them were associated with thesnatch and grab groups that prey on motor-ists on the corner of Valhalla Drive and Ja-kkalsvlei Avenue,” he said.

“At the end of November we hosted theprogramme at the Langebaanweg Air Forcewhere they were taken through a series ofactivities to change their behaviour andatti-tude aswell as instil some discipline in their

lives.“We also wanted to encourage them to set

positive goals for themselves and equipthem with the skills to manage conflict in anon-violent manner.”

Morgan said the programme was also apartnershipbetween theDepartment ofEdu-cation Metro Central District with officersof Bonteheuwel SAPS and Air Force officersbased at the Langebaan Airforce Base.

“This exercise is also important becausethese youth are at risk of joining up withmore serious gangs and getting into sub-stance abuse,” continued Morgan.

“Themain objective is to reintegrate theminto the education system although some ofthem will have to be sent to adult educationcentres because of their age and some havesimply been out of school for too long to goback.”

ved on scene and reported a large areaof scattered fires. The emergency per-sonnel immediately commenced with fi-re suppression using bush beaters andspades,” he said.At 17:23 the firefighters found an uni-

dentified baby approximately 12 monthsold in the bush – unharmed.“The baby was handed over to the

South African police,” he said. The police opened an inquest docket

regarding the occurrence of the fire aswell as the abandonment of the infant,Solomons-Johannes said. The fire was extinguished at 17:59.

Licensed gun owners are buying ammuniti-on from firearmdealerships and then re-sel-ling it to suspected gangs, say police.Local CPF chair Julian Unthank issued a

statement last week warning firearm dea-lers about this issue.Newly appointed Kleinvlei station com-

mander, ColonelVernonBester, said the po-lice are equally worried and issue a sternwarning to the licensed gun owners to stoptheir actions.“It came to the attention of the CPF that

licensed firearm owners are abused bywrong-doers to purchase ammunition fromgun dealers,” said Unthank. He said the sale of ammunition to gangs

contributes to the gang conflict within theKleinvlei police precinct.“The police are busy investigating this

criminal conduct of firearm owners.“This is a sternwarning for firearm licen-

se holders to act responsibility within theambit of the law,” Unthank said.

A total of 66 children younger than 13years old were raped and subsequent-ly treated at Karl Bremer Hospital in

November alone. And the numbers are ri-sing as the holidays approach. This has been confirmedbyprovincial he-

alth department spokesperson SithembisoMagubane, after a media enquiry about ca-ses treated at the hospital’s Thuthuzela Ca-re Centre (TCC) over the past six months. The total of children under 13 sexually as-

saulted since June stands at a nauseating278, and the number of children older than13 (but younger than 16) who were treatedby the caring TCC staff, stands at 422 for thesame period. This amounts to 700 cases.Of all these children, 468 knew their attac-

ker, Magubane said.

Cycles of violence“The annual trend has been observed in

previous years, which shows an increase inincidents occurring during the first lengthyschool break (in July/August),” Magubanesaid. “This increase peaks in December un-til the school year commences. Incidentsthen decrease and the cycle begins again.”Childline marketing manager Joan van

Niekerk said they experienced the same cy-cle. “We generally see a pick-up in all kindsof calls in December and January. The kidsare partying, the grownups are partying;there is less supervision of children.”Magubane said compared to 2013, the

numbers for 2014 had actually decreased. This aside, the facts remained shocking.“The eldest child was aged 15 and the yo-

ungest was 11 months old. The highest inci-dence areas covered byHelderbergHospitalinclude Mfuleni, Kraaifontein and Delft,”he said.“All children remain psychologically af-

fected by this trauma for life. Therapy onlyallows the individual to cope with the trau-ma. Physical recovery is always achieved atour centre in all cases since we do not seeseverely injured children – these are seenat trauma units.“However, a small percentage of cases be-

come HIV positive because of the sexual of-fence, which then affects the individual forlife.”Community safety MEC Dan Plato said

the numbers were “shocking”.“We are shocked by the numbers, but also

glad they were made available so we canshow the extent of the problem and that itis much bigger than we thought,” Plato toldTygerBurger.

Massive Challenges“We really facemassive challenges in our

communites. Our hope is that the 16 Daycampaign is not just for the now, but thatit will continue on a daily basis so itsmessa-ge can hit home,” he said.“Children are raped when their parents

are at work. More often than not they areraped by the people tasked to take care ofthem, as parents may not have viable alter-natives financially.Magubane explained the procedure follo-

wing an incident of sexual assault. He said no victim may be turned away

from a rape care centre or referred elsewhe-re, “unless in the event of a life or limb thre-atening emergency”.Normally, police bring the victim to the

care centre, where the site coordinator anda nurse meet the victim.A hospital folder is opened by an assistan-

ce officer, who takes down the victim’s de-tails and examines them after having ex-plained the procedure and purpose.Basic triage tests are performed and HIV

counselling and testing given, with consent.“The nurse will also be responsible for

pregnancy testing, HIV testing, STI testingand other tests as required by national orprovincial guidelines,” he said.Thenurse then supplies the clinical foren-

sic examiner with the the mandatory com-pleted police form and provides an unope-ned sexual assault examiner kit.He said the next part in necessary process

included an examination by the clinical fo-rensic examiner (as per establishedmedicalprotocol) and the completion of a rape proto-col form.

Shock at child rape statistics

The 30yearold mother of a nineyearoldchild who was raped, set alight and left to dieon a field near the R300 in Delft South inJanuary this year. The charges against theattacker have since been withdrawn due to alack of evidence. PHOTO: LERATO MADUNA

As people across the country are left in thedark due to scheduled load shedding, theCity of CapeTown is determined to success-fully and speedily implement energy sav-ing measures.

It aims to start with its internal energyefficiency programme, which has alreadyfitted 1 378 traffic signals with LED lights,a council statement reads. This saves about9 317 megawatt hours and 9 224 tonnes incarbon emissions annually.

It aims to eventually save 16 445 mega-watt hours per year and 16 281 tonnes in to-tal carbon emissions. The retrofittingproject also saw 41 500 incandescent andhalogen lamps in robots being replaced byLEDs at cost of R23m; a total of R11m is be-ing saved.

“About 26% of council buildings have al-so been part of the retrofitting project atR26m, while smart electricity meters arebeing installed at 90 city administrativebuildings,” says mayoral committee mem-ber for energy, environmental and spatialplanning, Johan van der Merwe.

Furthermore, 25 210 street lights havebeen replaced with energy efficient streetlights. The city also has a successful resi-dential energy savings programme. The in-ternal energy efficiency programmewill befocusing on savings at wastewater treat-mentworksandpumpstations inapartner-ship between various departments.V For more information visit www.savingelectricity.org.za.

The best way to deal with the Eskom crisisis to set up a full-scale judicial commissionof inquiry to find out what went wrong andhow to fix it.

This is according to Cape Chamber ofCommerce and Industry president JanineMyburgh.

“We are getting so many conflicting sto-ries, allegations and denials, that the onlyway to find the truth is to hand the job toa judge assisted by independent technicaland managerial experts,” says Myburgh.

She says Minister of Public EnterprisesLynne Brown has “inherited an ongoingdisaster and she will not be getting manystraight answers from those involved. Weneed to get to the bottom of the mess be-cause there are important lessons to learnand apply to some of the other failing statebusinesses.”

An inquiry would also be the best way tohold decision makers accountable.

Myburgh says the first step should be tostop the voluntary retrenchment process. She says its the worst way to reduce num-bers.

“Itwill ensure that some of the best quali-fied – but most frustrated – staff take thepackage and go. This will bleed Eskom ofthe skilled hands and minds it desperatelyneeds.”

Peter Haylett, chairperson of the Cham-ber’s Industrial Focus Portfolio Commit-tee, says among the things to be investigat-ed were:

. The neglect of essential maintenancework.

. Eskom’s coal purchases and coal trans-port.

. Eskom’s extensive use of labour bro-kers and the hugemark-up on the staff theysupplied.

. The construction and other contractsfor the new power stations.

. Eskom’s rejection of the Mmamabulapower station in Botswana which wouldhave provided cheap power and furtheredregional cooperation.

. Eskom’s refusal to consider offers toprovide gas power stations.

. And the massive golden handshakesfor Eskom’s failed executives.

He says a commission of inquiry shouldalso look into political interference and therejection of the views of technical expertson the Koeberg steam generator contract.

Whenhe isn’t helpingothermusiciansfulfil their dreams, Brilynn vanRooyen is chasing his own.

The local singer has achieved considera-ble success with his newest album, Aries, and even has a song, “Quality Time” chart-ing on Heart 104.9 fm’s top 30.Brilynn named the album after his own

star sign, saying that he often looks to starswhen it comes to interacting with others. Not that he believes in astrology whole-

heartedly, but he does like the idea of whatit represents. The music itself is a combination of soul,

R ‘n B and hip-hop with a touch of rock. “Iwrite a lot about personal experience andthings I feel the world needs, and mainlythat’s love. I don’t think there’s anythingbetter to sing about.”Brilynn wrote, produced and composed

most of the songs on Aries himself, and it’shis first album to have a charting single. He started out as a rapper, and being

drawn to the “meanings behindwords”, dab-bled in poetry.“I actually wanted to publish a poetry

book, but I was the only person at that stagewho didn’t know that people don’t reallyread poetry books here,” he says, referringto South Africa. So poetry became rap and rap became

singing, and Brilynn decided there was nopoint in attempting a music career if hewasn’t going to put everything into it.He left his retail management job about

four years ago, and has been living out hispassion since.“Music is something that’s in you, it

drives you,” he says. “When you need to doyour school work, but youwant tomakemu-sic, that’s when you know you’re an addict.”When he isn’t working on his own music,

he runs Crazy World Productions, a record-ing business, and is the brain behind the

Starstruck Voice Search competition. CrazyWorld Productions was also one of the mainsponsors of this year’s Cape Town TalentSearch competition and the completion’swinner, Shannel Ebrahim, is featured onone of the tracks on Aries. He is in the process of producing albums

for Idols finalist Crushanda Forbes, SekoatiSK and The PJ Twins of SA’s Got Talentfame, and working with the winner of thisyear’s Starstruck winner, Leanne Heynes.Besides his solo R ‘n Bmusic, Brilynn also

makes up one half of the house music act,House Guest, with Ashley Rayan Welkom. In between all this, Brilynn hopes to re-

lease anew single early next year and finallyget round to work on a Christmas album forthe 2015 festive season. All Brilynn’s music is available on iTunes

and fans can visit www.facebook.com/HouseGuestMusic to stay up to date witheverything he’s up to.V Brilynn visited TygerBurger’s Orange Couch to givereaders a taste of his new album. Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to watch his interview and performanceof “Quality Time”.

Cape Town band Trenton and Free Radi-cal have recently released the musicvideo for their song, “Don’t You Wor-

ry”.The band feels the song is a good exampleof how they use catchy tunes to presentmeaningful lyrics. One example is actually in the song, whichwas first released in 2012 on the band’sGiantStep album, where front man Trenton Birchsings: “...Wish the Japanesewould stop theirwhaling.” They eventually did earlier thisyear when Japan was ordered by the UnitedNations’ International Court of Justice tostop hunting whales off Antarctica. But the band say the most important mes-

sage they want fans to take from the song isthat nomatter howhard life gets, thingswillalways end up alright. “Just look how theJapanese have ‘stopped their Whaling’.”Trenton and Free Radical say they’ve al-ways wanted to record a music video for the

song, but never really had the time until ear-lier this year. They wanted to shoot a video with theirfriends and have fun with it. The video wasshot by Martin Geldenhuys in Woodstockand directed by Trenton, and the initial plan

was to use one continuous shot, “but thatwent out of thewindowdue to toomuch fun”.Trenton and Free Radical is the result ofa musical partnership between Trenton andguitarist Marco Wielander. They describe their music as a hybrid ofreggae, hip hop, ska electronic and Africansound. “It’s a bit of a mix of whatever musicthe individual band members like, and welike a lot of different music.”While the bandare going to be spending some time simplyenjoying summer, theyarealsobusywritingfor their new album which is due to be re-leased early next year. For more informa-tion about Trenton and the Free Radical, orto stay up to date with new music, visitwww.trentonandfreeradical.com.V Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to watch the musicvideo for “Don’t You Worry”.

Race thrills to beat heatADRIAN PHEIFFER

Motorsport enthusiasts at Killarneywho braved the wind and heat thisweekend, were able to enjoy an excel-

lent final round of the Power Series sponso-red by Wingfield Motors, as well as the firstleg of the new African Endurance Series. The first Formula Libre race was particu-

larly exciting as Reg Anderson (FormulaGTi Swift), came from the back of the gridto almost snatch victory from Rassie Eras-mus (Ray), as they crossed the line. The dis-appointment was 15 year old Joshua Dolin-schek having to settle for 10th place afterqualifying an excellent third in his debutmain circuit event. The second race was a“kyk weer” as Anderson once again just fai-led to catch Erasmus – this time by a slenderseven tenths of a second. Elroy Vice wasthird, while theyoungDolinschekrecoveredto finish fourth.NickAdcock tightened his hold on theMa-

kita Supercar crown when he finished a lit-tle over a second ahead of Brad Wadeley inthe first race, with Gareth Easom and CraigNunns taking the silver and bronze classes.Wadeley took over in the final leg with Ad-cock dropping to third behind Steve McCar-thy. Easom and Nunns remained in controlof the silver and bronze. The first Midas Clubman race belonged to

Junaid Slamang in his BMWM3, with Jere-my Smith (VW Jetta) and Wayne Wilson(Nissan Primera), second and third. The lea-

ding pair changed places in the secondevent, with Jesse Huggett (VW Jetta), mo-ving up to third.Battling Brett Roach, the last of the late

brakers, was in fine form in the opening legof the Jive GTi Challenge.

However, the main interest was in classC where overall title challenger Paul Simonhad to settle for fourth behind HermanMahnke, Dewald Lubbe and Mario Roux. While Roach notched up an excellent doubleby winning the second race as well, Simon

finished behind the class C entries of Lubbe,Roux, Mahnke, Gert du Plessis and MarioGerber. The Masters V8 opener belonged to Craig

Jarviswith championMarcelAngel down infourth.

An incident -filled and action-packed Cape National FirstDivision derby at the PhilippiStadium on Friday night en-ded in a 2-1 win for MilanoUnited. The Peoples’ Team had a

bright start to the game andwere 1-0 inside the opening se-venminutes when FaganMul-ler scrambled the ball homefrom close range after MilanoUnited keeper Lee Langevelthad been unable to poach anearlier effort. After a couple of close calls

for former Santos forward De-niro Stanley against his old si-de, Milano United were backon level terms midwaythrough the opening halfwhenwingerBrandonTheronfinished with a simple chancefrom close in.It wasn’t proving to be Stan-

ley’s evening as he went on tostrike the woodwork either si-de of the break. Santos alsohad their chances to add a se-cond goal, but instead itwas tobe the home side who nettedwhat turned out to the winnerwhen Brent Adonis ran ontoTaariq Fielies’ free kick tohead in 15 minutes from time. The heat of whatwas a thril-

SAREL BURGER

Eezy My Kinnes ended their last gameat home before the break with a stun-ning 2-1 over neighbours Santos at

Philippi Stadium on Friday evening. As expected, it was a high tempo encoun-

ter between rivals Milano United and San-tos, filled with crunching tackles and afierce battle in the middle of the park.

The Kinnes came close to opening thescoring in the third minute after DevonSaal and Deniro Stanley teamed up on theedge of the area, but Saal’s final shot wasblocked by the oncoming Fagan Muller.

At the other end, Muller made no mis-take from close range when he gave thePeople’s Team an early lead in the seventhminute with their first chance of the game.

Muller was in the right place at the righttime and tapped in a loose ball followinga dead-ball situation, after goalkeeper LeeLangeveldt made the initial save.

Minutes later, the former Santos attack-er Stanley was on the end of a through-passand attempted to lob the ball over the headof Gambian International goalkeeper PaDembo Touray, but hit the woodwork.

The visitors started off strong as antici-pated and did a great job in the midfieldwhere captain Tyren Arendse and SizweNyambi were closing down all the spaces.Their quick pressing midfield were re-stricting Milano from building up play in-to the final third, yet, the Kinnes persistedand showed signs of an equaliser.

A quarter way in, Brandon Theron cameclose to levelling matters, but was deniedby Touray from a one-on-one situation. Mi-

lano repeatedly harassed Cheslyn Jampiesdown the right-hand side through the speedyGanief Stellenboom.

In the 24th minute, Theron made it 1-1 whenhe put the ball into the back of the net fromStellenboom’s pass across the face of goal.

Santos captain Arendse attempted from dis-tance in the 38th minute after 30-minutes ofplay without a shot on goal. A frustrated Fa-grie Lakay also attempted from range, but hisuncontrolled shot was off target as well.

Nasief Morris came up for a corner set-pieceand came close to scoring what could havebeen the goal of the season, but he was unfor-tunate to see his overhead-kick cleared off theline by Sachin Dawood. Before the breakStanley rattled the woodwork yet again witha ferocious shot following an exquisite one-two play on the edge of the 18-yard area.

In the 75th minute super-sub Brent Adonisfound the back of the net with a headed at-tempt from a Nazier Jacobs set-piece, afterjust six minutes on the pitch.
