At least R300 000 was stolen from theEngen garage in Bonteheuwel lastweek during an armed robbery.

However, officers of the City of CapeTown’s Law Enforcement arrested threesuspects involved in the incident whichoccurred on Tuesday 29 March between07:00 and 08:00.

The City’s Mayco member for safetyand security, JP Smith, says arrests fol-lowed as one of the officers was alerted toa suspicious group loitering in the vicini-ty of the Engen garage in Bonteheuwel.

“He sourced backup and just as the offi-cers arrived at the garage, five men camestorming out of the premises,” Smith

says.He explains that the officers gave chase

during which one of the suspects openedfire on them. The officers returned fireandmanaged to catch up to two of the sus-pects.

Onewas found inpossession of just overR20 000, while the other had about R2 500on him.

The public informed officers that a redFord Laser was involved in the robbery.Officers traced the vehicle to Langa andwith the assistance of the police’s K9Unit,they arrested the driver and recovered afirearm.

“At least four suspects are still on the

run. The garage proprietor has indicatedthat at least R300 000 had been stolen dur-ing the incident,” says Smith.

According to Smith this was “a verydaring robbery because our Law Enforce-ment base is literally next door to the ga-rage”.

He says the officers are to be commend-ed for their quick reaction to the concernsof the public and also for putting theirlives on the line to catch those responsi-ble.

“This success would not have been pos-siblewithout the valuable information re-ceived from the public and I tip my hat tothem,” Smith says.

App helpsto findbursariesThree entrepreneurs have created an

app to help school-leavers and Grade11s find the bursary suited to their

needs among 7000 on offer.SAScholar is the name of the app that

aims to empowerprimarily the youthbyas-sisting them to find and manage scholar-ship opportunities through a mobile appli-cation, enhancing their chances to gain en-try into tertiary institutions, says CurwynMapaling, one of the founding three.“With more than 7000 bursary entries on

the qualifications in our database, theSAScholar app makes finding bursary op-portunities as easy as one, two, three!” hesays.Mapalingadds theapphasmade theproc-

ess of finding a bursary easier by incorpo-rating bursarymatching as opposed to bur-sary searching.“Bursary matching is the process of

matching the right person to the right fund-ing opportunitywhile bursary searching isan ancient process of looking for fundingopportunities,” he says.“The app is designed in such a way that

students will enter their biographical in-formation and the qualification they arestudying for, in the process of creatingtheir own profile.“We will match them with bursaries

available at a particular university theychoose, or for all the South African univer-sities.The app launched in July last year and

the bursaries included are worth overR1 billion.“The ... app has helped thousands of

scholars to getmatched to bursary opportu-nities for universities in South Africa andthe company is looking to expand to FETcolleges and international universities.”V Visit www.sascholar.com,view the video onwww.youtube.com/watch?v=bHK02c4s, or visitwww.enca.com/media/video/appmakesiteasierapplybursaries or www.news24.com/Live/SouthAfrica/News/ThiswebapphelpsSAscholarsfindbursariesfortheirtertiarystudies20150701for more information.

With 15 000 participants last year, the orga-nisers of the Cape Town Cannabis Walkhope to grow the event to 45 000 this year.Organiser Jo Hout says the walk, now in

its 14th year, has been growing exponen-tially. Starting with only a handful of peo-ple in 2002 as “the only thing society coulddo to show support for cannabis legalisa-tion”, the walk saw 5000 participants in2014, Hout says. Hout says the increase inparticipation is due to a growing aware-ness among the public of the medicinal useof cannabis. “More studies and researchare being carried out on themedicinal ben-efits of cannabis and the USA has changedtheir classification of the drug. People areslowly being given the right kind of infor-mation.” Hout believes legalising the drugwould open up a range of natural treat-ments for illnesses such as epilepsy, can-cer, HIV and neurodegenerative diseases,as well as the treatment of pain and inflam-mation.“It’s a medicine that people can grow

themselves,” he says. “There are few sideeffects. If someone takes too much oxyto-cin, they’ll die. It’s impossible to ingestenough cannabis to die.” In addition tohemp crops being an alternative industryand boosting job creation, Hout believesthe income generated by taxing the drugwould benefit the economy.V The Cannabis Walk is on Saturday 7 May at 10:00,starting at the corner of Tennant and Keizersgrachtstreets. Community gardengrows out of crimeASTRID FEBRUARIE

@febastrid

An Uitsig resident created a communi-ty garden on a crime hotspot in an ef-fort to deter crime in the community.

With the help of residents, GeraldMajam-pa took ownership of a piece of land whereseveral shooting incidents have occurredand turned it into what they now call “Thegarden of faith”.“We wanted to do something positive, to

show the youth in our community thatthere is much more to life than crime,” hesays. Majampa created the garden in De-cember with donations from the communi-ty and almost overnight beautified thiscrime hotspot.Using old gates, wooden panels, tyres and

other recyclable materials, the crime hot-spot has turned from an eyesore to a placewhere people can socialise and work to-gether.“It is notmygarden – it is our garden. And

I want to encourage more people to support

us and to create this in their own gardensor in other communities,” he says.“If we can get assistance with a water

point dedicated to the garden, we can startgrowing vegetables and those who havecontributed to the garden will have a placewhere they can pick vegetables to feed theirfamilies,” he says.Derick Small of Kingdom Faith Life

Church inUitsig, says he is amazed bywhatthe community createdandhopesmorepeo-ple will be encouraged to do the same.“We always hear and read about shoot-

ings, murders, alcohol and drug abuse inour community, but there is so much moreto this community,” he says.Small says the garden has brought people

together, especially the youth in the com-munity.“Wesee toomanyyoungpeople getting in-

volved in gang activities, killed and goingto prison, but with projects like this theycan invest their time and energy into con-tributing to their community in a positiveway,” he says.

Kostiris family last Thursday afterSpiro found her.Gina would have kept the cat, it

seems, had it not been for her ownpet, Lucy, aGreat Dane, wanting to“have her for snackies...” Ginajoked online. In the meantime, since the own-

er has not been found, Thea says afamilyhas shown interest in adopt-ing the furry beauty, now namedDusty – “because she looks likeshe’s been rolling around in thedust”.“She looks really, really good.

She’s also doing very well. She’sspayed, hasno fleas, is friendly andwell fed. She also had on a lovelyred collar,” Thea said.V Do you perhaps know Dusty or her human parents? Give TygerBurger a call on021 910 6551, or contact the clinic on021 554 5877.

The City of Cape Town’s annual Gamesfor Older Persons was held last week attheGreenPoint track. Here seniormen

andwomenwere afforded the opportunity todisplay their athletic skills in front of hun-dreds of spectators. Some of the sportingcodes that formed part of the challenge in-cluded duck walks, Jukskei and sprints. Atleast 1000 seniors citizens from across thecity took part. The aimof the games is to pro-mote healthy living and active ageing.

The University of the WesternCape and Implats developedSouth Africa’s first hydrogen fu-el cell forklift and refuelling sta-tion and unveiled the prototypein Springs last week. The three-year project, which

commenced in 2012, was a collab-orative effort between Implatsthrough their Impala RefiningServices, Hydrogen South Africa(HySA) Systems, UWC and thedepartment of science and tech-nology.The prototype hydrogen fuel

cell forklift and refuelling stationwas unveiled at its Impala Refin-ing Services in Springs lastweek.Over the last three years, Im-

plats funded HySA Systems a to-tal of R6 million towards the de-velopment of a fuel cell poweredprototype forklift and refuellingstation which has been in opera-tion since October 2015 withinthedispatchareaat theBaseMet-als Refinery in Springs. This investment is a result of

over a decade of continuous dis-cussions and negotiations be-tween Implats and UWC’s SouthAfrican Institute for AdvancedMaterials Chemistry (Saiamc),under the leadership of Saiamc’sdirector, Professor VladimirLinkov.Linkov said with Impala Plati-

num becoming a partner toSaiamc, UWC has achieved thelong-term goal of entering strate-gic research, development andinnovation partnerships with anabsolute national leader in one ofthe pillars of energy generationfor current and future needs of

the South African economy.“This partnership is unique in

the national system of innova-tion, unparallelled by any otheruniversity laboratory or insti-tute in South Africa,” he said.Implats plans to use hydrogen

fuel cell technology as its mainsource of energy for materialhandling and underground min-ing equipment. The initiative involves build-

ing local skills in the develop-ment of hydrogen and fuel cellproducts and co-funding the de-velopment of the prototype fork-lift and refuelling station.ImplatsCEOTerenceGoodlace

said developing a viable fuel cellindustry in SouthAfrica has sev-eral advantages for the country

such as economic development, sustainable job creation and so-cial good. The Minister of Science and

Technology, Naledi Pandor, not-ed that South Africa had startedto make a number of bold movesthat could see the country leap-frog into being a leading hydro-gen fuel cell technology industri-al hub.“A forklift may appear to be a

small move, but great industrieshave developed from smallmoves,” she said.Professor Frans Swanepoel,

deputy vice-chancellor for Re-search and Innovation at UWC,said if fuel cell forklift develop-ment is to take-off, “UWC is hap-py to play a part in that”.

A student from Bloubergstrandwho studies at UWC in Bellvillefound an unlikely surprise underhis car’s hood when he stopped ata garage to fill up.Spiro Kostiris’s mother, Gina,

told TygerBurger the tale of the lit-tle cat that was found nestledamong her son’s car parts at a fill-ing station in Bellville when Spirostopped to have the car’s oil andwater checked.“We don’t know if she climbed in

at Blou-berg when my son went tovarsity. He asked the garage at-tendant to check the oil and water, and there she was, tucked into theengine,” Gina said.“She was terrified – they had to

fish her out from deep within theengine, but by the time she gothome, she was calm and as soon asshe was fed she was sweet andadorable.“Whoknowshow long shewas in

there for? We don’t know if shemaybe climbed in at varsity, butshe was just bathed and washedand smelled beautiful. We thoughtshe might belong to one of the lec-turers.“She immediately came and cud-

dled in and she’s well-trained, be-cause she did her business in thekitty litter. Obviously somebodyloves her,” Gina added.Ginaposted pictures of the cat on

Facebook in thehope of findingherowners. The beautiful feline specimen

that looks like she might havesome Maine Coon in her, is cur-rently in tiptop shape, says Thea

Perfect Cape Town weather, close racingand a fair share of controversy were allpart of the script at Killarney’s openinground of the 2016 South African NationalKarting Championship, but the weekendwill likely better be remembered for thefact that local drivers proved totally domi-nant.According to a press release by WPMC

Kart Club, Western Province MotorsportClub karters Julian van der Watt, DinoStermin, Sebastian Boyd, Joseph Oelz andCharl Visser each won one of the five na-tional categories thatmadeup themeeting.Local racers also won thirteen of Satur-

day’s fifteen races andwithmost classes of-fering their champions a seat in the RotaxMaxWorld Finals in Italy in October, Capekarting once again started the season on ahigh note.Killarney is well-known as a hard nut to

crack for visiting karters and Saturdayproved no exception with three of the win-

ners unbeaten over the weekend, but thisyear saw a local lad coming out on top ofthe fastest Rotax DD2 shifter class too forthe first time when Formula Ford fron-trunner Julian van der Watt (Kosmic)came from behind each time to beat SADD2 champion and Jozi Polo Cup racerBradley Liebenberg (Birel) and Mastersclass winner, Port Elizabeth’s multiple SAProduction Car champion and GTC racer,Michael Stephen.Another Cape driver and VW Polo Cup

racer Umpie Swart (Birel) was fourth inDD2 fromDurbanite BenjaminHabig (Ton-yKart), formerWP champ JonathanThom-as (Partners CRG), Bloem driver Justin Al-lison (Tony Kart) and Tristan de Nobrega,Robert Whiting and Michael Buchholzrounding off the top ten.The open age group 125cc Rotax Max

Challenge is one class where Cape drivershave regularly dominated over the yearsand this year was no exception. Reigning

SA Junior Max champion Dino Stermin(Kosmic) overcame a difficult first heat totake two hard-fought wins to take overallhonours for the day.Although it was no walk in the park, Se-

bastian Boyd (Kosmic) made no mistakesen route to three fine racewins and a domi-nant maiden national high school 125ccJunior Max victory over local rival DanielDuminy who drove a characteristicallysteady weekend to bring his Kosmic home.In second place was Johannesburg driverBlaine Rademeyer (Birel), Worcester ladJP Hamman (Kosmic), Mozambican KarlPitzer (FA), Durbanite Dominic Lincoln(Tony) and local lad Andrew Rackstraw(Tony).Cameron O’Connor, Storm Lanfear and

Jason Coetzee rounded off the Junior Maxtop ten, but Coetzee, who was second toBoyd in the first and third heats, was partyto a controversial second heat last lap thatsawhimexcluded from that heat andDario

Busi, who had ledmost of that heat exclud-ed for the day for their parts in some ques-tionable last lap race two tactics…Theremay have been just one Cape driv-

er on the other primary school 60cc MiniRok grid, but that did not prevent wildcardCharl Visser (Zanardi) from winning it.Visserwas first home in all three races, butwas docked five places for a startline in-fringement to handKwandaMakoena (FA)a rare out of town victory in the finale.Visser’s Mini Rok win was however all

the more impressive considering that hebounced straight back to win the secondMini Rok race immediately after being sig-nificantly shaken up when thrown fromhis kart in a hefty second race Maxteinocrash. Now all that remains to be seen isif Cape Town’s karters can continue todominate the national races away fromhome. The second round of the SAnationalkarting championship follows in Port Eliz-abeth on Workers Day 1 May.

BASEBALL: SENIORS, YOUTH TAKE BACKTOBACK VICTORIES

WP makes aclean sweepSEAN CAMPBELL

After annexing their 17th senior nation-al baseball championship (NBC) lastweek, all of theWesternProvince (WP)

youth teams proceeded to win gold in theirdivisions over the last week.Western Province have nowmade it back-

to-back clean sweeps of the South AfricanBaseball Union’s (SABU) senior and youthNBCs after alsowinning gold in all divisionsin Boksburg last year. The seniorWPA side conquered all before

them as they registered no fewer than fiveshut outs whilst drawing one game to Gaut-eng u.23, which was rained out. WP A beatWP u.23 10-0 in the semi-finals and facedGauteng A in the final after Gauteng A beatWP B 9-2 in their semi-final.The final was played in horrendously

windy and rainy weather, which did not al-low for good baseball. The weather favouredGautengAas it stifled theWPApowerhousebatting line-up. Both teams were taken offthe field twice due to persistent rain. On thesecond occasion, at the top of the ninth in-nings, umpires called the game off with WPA leading 7-0. As the innings was incom-plete, the official score stood at 5-0, as it wasat the bottom if the eighth innings. The pitching duo of Jared Elario and Carl

Michaels stood out, with Brett Willemburgand Darren Wedel shining with the bat.WP u.18 A beat Gauteng A 10-0 in the final

of the junior championship. Jarrod Willi-ams pitched a sublime game and was wellsupported by his fielders who turned a beau-tiful double play in the sixth inning. Willi-ams pitched six innings, conceding five hits, two walks and fanned two hitters.Brandon Gehlig (2 for 2), Haydon Matter

(2 for 3) and Kyle Ripepi (2 for 4) were thestandout hitters for WP u.18 A.Gauteng A beat Gauteng B 6-3 and WP A

beatWPB 9-2 in their respective semi-finals.In a tightly contested final for u.15s, WP

A beat Gauteng A 5-1. Both teams utilisedthreepitchers eachbut itwasWPAthat tookadvantage of the errors and walks given upby Gauteng A. Just when Gauteng A werethreatening, WP A turned a double play tokeep them scoreless in that innings.WP A beat Gauteng B and Gauteng A beat

WP B in the semi-finals.After losing to Gauteng A 11-10 in the

round robin, WP A beat them 5-3 in an excit-ing u.12 final.Western Province Baseball dominance is

good for the region, but definitely not goodfor South African baseball. One would havethought that Gauteng Central, Eastern andNorthern have consolidated into one unitthat would wrestle the dominance and tro-phies away from Western Province.Other regions to have participated in the

tournament were KZN, Mandela Bay, Eden,Cape Winelands and Zimbabwe, and someregions entered more than one team.

A victorious Western Province u.18 A side completed a clean sweep of titles for all Western Provinceteams at the national baseball championship in Chukker Road after two weeks of action.
