    he construction of Cher Bothas

    new school in Meerlust Street,

    Oak Glen, Bellville, is progress-

ing well with most of the earthmoving

having been completed and the laying

    of foundations now in progress.

The completion date for the project

is April 2017 and the school is hoping

to move in during July next year.

Nick Davies, the chairman of the

    Project SteeringCommittee, is thrilled

with the progress. As a parent and a

member of the Cher Botha SGB I can-

not tell youhowhappywe all are about

Cher Bothas new home. Our educa-

tors have really been battling to run a

school on three different remote sites.

To have a single locationwherewe can

all be together in a custom designed

school with the correct facilities is in-

credibly exciting. To have been given

this beautiful site in such a lovely and

friendly suburb is the cherry on top.

Our children are going to love it here.

He went on to say how grateful Cher

Botha is to their new neighbours who

have had to put up with a lot of incon-

venience in the early stages of the con-

    struction.

    The heavymachinery and the sand

have made life quite unpleasant for

our neighbours and we would like to

thank them for their patience and un-

    derstanding.

One positive aspect of the construc-

tion work is that the contractors are

required to use a certain percentage of

the local labour force and anyone in-

terested in working on the project

should get in touch with Coenie Lour-

    ens, the community liaison officer.

    The accident occurred onSunday 29May.

    Chitra Bodasing, ER24 spokesperson,

    says paramedics, Life Healthcare, Metro

and other services attended to the incident.

Upon arrival on the scene it was found

that the car had rolled. The occupants were

trapped in the vehicle, Bodasing says.

Fire and Rescue used the Jaws of Life to

    extricate them.

Bodasing says sadly a woman and two

men succumbed to their injuries. One man

    whowas injuredwas treated and transport-

ed to hospital for further medical care.

The exact cause of the incident is un-

known. Authorities were on scene for fur-

to move in during July next year.

Nick Davies, the chairman of the

    Project SteeringCommittee, is thrilled

with the progress. As a parent and a

member of the Cher Botha SGB I can-

not tell youhowhappywe all are about

Cher Bothas new home. Our educa-

tors have really been battling to run a

school on three different remote sites.

To have a single locationwherewe can

all be together in a custom designed

school with the correct facilities is in-

credibly exciting. To have been given

this beautiful site in such a lovely and

friendly suburb is the cherry on top.

Our children are going to love it here.

He went on to say how grateful Cher

Botha is to their new neighbours who

have had to put up with a lot of incon-

venience in the early stages of the con-

    struction.

    The heavymachinery and the sand

have made life quite unpleasant for

our neighbours and we would like to

thank them for their patience and un-

    derstanding.

One positive aspect of the construc-

tion work is that the contractors are

required to use a certain percentage of

the local labour force and anyone in-

terested in working on the project

should get in touch with Coenie Lour-

    ens, the community liaison officer.

    Library celebrates top readers

    ASTRID FEBRUARIE

    @astridfebruarie

    E

    lsies River Library hosted

    their annual reading competi-

    tion last week with learners

from several schools in the com-

    munity participating.

The Grade 7 learners from Nor-

    wood, Elnor, Balvenie and Craven-

by primary schools were invited to

show off their reading and spelling

    skills.

    Thewinners of the local competi-

tion will participate in the District

    5 reading competition at ParowLi-

    brary later this month.

    TheDistrict 5 libraries consist of

    Adriaanse, ElsiesRiver, Leonsdale

    and Ravensmead libraries.

    Julian Schroeder, senior librari-

an at Elsies River, says the aim of

the competition is to have awinner

for each of the three languages

    English, Afrikaans and Xhosa

and as the District 5 grade 7 Read-

    er of the Year.

The competition also aims to es-

    tablish better relationships with

schools and to raise the awareness

    of reading among teachers and

    learners, says Schroeder.

    The competition is aimed at

Grade 7 learners as they have

    reached a cognitive level where

    language and concentration skills

    should be well developed.

    This agegroup is alsobest suita-

ble to take part in a reading compe-

    tition. In addition these learners

are also at the crucial stage of exit-

ing the primary level of education

    and entering the secondary level,

    and reading plays an integrated

part in this transition period, he

    says.

    The participants are expected to

read a part of a book or article to

the best of their ability. All three

    languageswill be considered in the

    final round. Each participant will

be judged on the following princi-

    ples: reading fluently and correct,

    comprehension, spelling, presen-

    tation and speed.

    Learners should be encouraged

to join the library. Those with

    membership cards should make

good use of the library in prepara-

tion of being the best reader to rep-

resent their school at the local li-

    brary round, he says.

    Schroeder says they encourage

school rounds to be held at schools

as to involve all grade sevens to

borrow books from their local li-

braries in preparation to be the

    best reader at their library.

    lsies River Library hosted

    their annual reading competi-

    tion last week with learners

from several schools in the com-

    munity participating.

The Grade 7 learners from Nor-

    wood, Elnor, Balvenie and Craven-

by primary schools were invited to

show off their reading and spelling

    skills.

    Thewinners of the local competi-

tion will participate in the District

    5 reading competition at ParowLi-

    brary later this month.

    TheDistrict 5 libraries consist of

    Adriaanse, ElsiesRiver, Leonsdale

    and Ravensmead libraries.

    Julian Schroeder, senior librari-

an at Elsies River, says the aim of

the competition is to have awinner

for each of the three languages

    English, Afrikaans and Xhosa

and as the District 5 grade 7 Read-

    er of the Year.

The competition also aims to es-

    tablish better relationships with

schools and to raise the awareness

    of reading among teachers and

    learners, says Schroeder.

    The competition is aimed at

Grade 7 learners as they have

    reached a cognitive level where

    language and concentration skills

    should be well developed.

    This agegroup is alsobest suita-

ble to take part in a reading compe-

    tition. In addition these learners

are also at the crucial stage of exit-

ing the primary level of education

    and entering the secondary level,

    and reading plays an integrated

part in this transition period, he

    says.

    The participants are expected to

read a part of a book or article to

the best of their ability. All three

    languageswill be considered in the

    final round. Each participant will

be judged on the following princi-

    ples: reading fluently and correct,

    comprehension, spelling, presen-

    tation and speed.

    Learners should be encouraged

to join the library. Those with

    membership cards should make

good use of the library in prepara-

tion of being the best reader to rep-

resent their school at the local li-

    brary round, he says.

    Schroeder says they encourage

school rounds to be held at schools

as to involve all grade sevens to

borrow books from their local li-

braries in preparation to be the

    best reader at their library.

elft residents are using technology to

their advantage through a new mo-

    bile application developed and de-

signed by ZoeAcademy of Skills which ena-

bles transactions to be done without the ex-

    change of cash.

Pastor Charles George of Zoe Academy of

Skills explains that through the mobile ap-

plication, called the Jam4All Lifestyle Ap-

plication, residents can access the wi-fi set

up by the ministry and use the services on

    the application absolutely free.

They can download the mobile applica-

tion and use the services, which include the

jamchat and jam jar (e-wallet). This enables

the phone user to transfer money or to chat

on the phone while in the wi-fi zone, but

once they leave the area their cellphone da-

ta need to be activated to use the applica-

    tion, he says.

The e-wallet can also beused to earn cash-

back at local retailers connected to the ap-

plication. This means that when someone

purchases a product at a store connected to

the application, no cash transfer occurs.

The customer simply receives a codewhich

they punch into their phone which will

transfer the owed amount to the retail own-

    er, Charles explains.

He says that the resident has to purchase

the points at the ministry offices and it is

then loaded onto the customers phone.

We want to create a certain lifestyle in

our community through the use of this spe-

cial application to ensure that residents

support each other and encourage support

of local businesses, thereby reducing the

use of cash in the communitys environ-

    ment, Charles says.

The application also has a loyalty pro-

grammewhere the local business gives loy-

alty rewards to the community and commu-

nity members in return for support.

This shows the community they care

and are involved in the community and as

many businesses want to offer rewards but

struggle with the admin of tracking, calcu-

lating and paying rewards, this application

provides a simple solution, he says.

Charles says their aim is to enable its sub-

scribers to save money on communication

costs and earn meaningful rewards from

    participating businesses for their commu-

nities and themselves by consciously di-

recting their spending power to participat-

ing businesses. Download the Jam4All ap-

    FEBRUARIE

Considering the challenges faced by the

youth of today, it is no easy task to pro-

    tect a child.

    With child protectionweek underway,

rescue service ER24 shared valuable ad-

vice on what parents can do to ensure

    their child or childrens safety.

First and foremost, get to know your

children. A close relationship or bond

with them will help you determine if

anything is wrong. Let them know they

can come to you should they need help,

    says spokesperson Chitra Bodasing.

Educate your children about the dan-

gers they face and openly discuss topics

    likedruguse, alcohol abuse, sexandpeer

pressure. If need be, seek help from pro-

    fessionals.

    Abuse, sexual assault, abduction and

violence are real challenges faced by

    youth today.Therefore youhave to teach

your children not to go anywhere alone,

never to go to secluded areas or any-

where with a stranger, she says.

Even if approached by someone they

know, they should obtain your permis-

sion first before going anywhere with

that person. Inform them that should

they feel unsafe around someone, they

should try to run away and scream to get

the attention of other people whomay be

    around them.

She reminds parents to always set a

    good example for their children.

A home is a place where a child

should feel safe and loved. Ensure a

    healthy family environment. Remember

    that children watch you.

It is crucial to never leave children un-

attended or in an unsafe environment.

If your children are left in the care of

someone else while you are at work, for

example, ensure the person can be trust-

ed. If in doubt, find an alternative. Also,

ensure your children know their names,

your name and who to contact in case of

an emergency when they are of a young

    age, she says.

Teach children about the use of social

media, the internet and cellular phones.

They should be made aware of the dan-

gers and rules should be put in place to

prevent them being exposed to preda-

    tors.

Bodasing says its important not to be

    overprotective as long as reasonable

    rules are in place.

Pay attention to them, listen to them,

spend timewith them and let themknow

that you care.Be involved inyour childs

life. Findoutwhat their interests are and

    support them where necessary. Remem-

ber that your child and their well-being

    is your number one priority.

talent, Sekunjalo Edujazz will be hosting

their annual concert at Artscape Theatre on

Saturday 4 June this time with Jimmy Ne-

    vis as the headline artist.

This annual jazz concert not only supports

    local music development through fundrais-

    aspiring musicians from underprivileged

communities to showcase their talent on the

    big stage.

These young bands are given the chance to

work with established headline artists and

some of the greatest music educators that

South Africa has to offer. Extensive work-

shops are conducted by their mentors to help

musicians foster skills and experience in live

    performances.

For this years concert, Jimmy will be

joined by The Belhar Music Collective and

elft residents are using technology to

their advantage through a new mo-

    bile application developed and de-

signed by ZoeAcademy of Skills which ena-

bles transactions to be done without the ex-

    change of cash.

Pastor Charles George of Zoe Academy of

Skills explains that through the mobile ap-

plication, called the Jam4All Lifestyle Ap-

plication, residents can access the wi-fi set

up by the ministry and use the services on

    the application absolutely free.

They can download the mobile applica-

tion and use the services, which include the

jamchat and jam jar (e-wallet). This enables

the phone user to transfer money or to chat

on the phone while in the wi-fi zone, but

once they leave the area their cellphone da-

ta need to be activated to use the applica-

    tion, he says.

The e-wallet can also beused to earn cash-

back at local retailers connected to the ap-

plication. This means that when someone

purchases a product at a store connected to

the application, no cash transfer occurs.

The customer simply receives a codewhich

they punch into their phone which will

transfer the owed amount to the retail own-

    er, Charles explains.

He says that the resident has to purchase

the points at the ministry offices and it is

then loaded onto the customers phone.

We want to create a certain lifestyle in

our community through the use of this spe-

cial application to ensure that residents

support each other and encourage support

of local businesses, thereby reducing the

use of cash in the communitys environ-

    ment, Charles says.

The application also has a loyalty pro-

grammewhere the local business gives loy-

alty rewards to the community and commu-

nity members in return for support.

This shows the community they care

and are involved in the community and as

many businesses want to offer rewards but

struggle with the admin of tracking, calcu-

lating and paying rewards, this application

provides a simple solution, he says.

Charles says their aim is to enable its sub-

scribers to save money on communication

costs and earn meaningful rewards from

    participating businesses for their commu-

nities and themselves by consciously di-

recting their spending power to participat-

ing businesses. Download the Jam4All ap-

plication on your cellphones play store.

    FEBRUARIE

Considering the challenges faced by the

youth of today, it is no easy task to pro-

    tect a child.

    With child protectionweek underway,

rescue service ER24 shared valuable ad-

vice on what parents can do to ensure

    their child or childrens safety.

First and foremost, get to know your

children. A close relationship or bond

with them will help you determine if

anything is wrong. Let them know they

can come to you should they need help,

    says spokesperson Chitra Bodasing.

Educate your children about the dan-

gers they face and openly discuss topics

    likedruguse, alcohol abuse, sexandpeer

pressure. If need be, seek help from pro-

    fessionals.

    Abuse, sexual assault, abduction and

violence are real challenges faced by

    youth today.Therefore youhave to teach

your children not to go anywhere alone,

never to go to secluded areas or any-

where with a stranger, she says.

Even if approached by someone they

know, they should obtain your permis-

sion first before going anywhere with

that person. Inform them that should

they feel unsafe around someone, they

should try to run away and scream to get

the attention of other people whomay be

    around them.

She reminds parents to always set a

    good example for their children.

A home is a place where a child

should feel safe and loved. Ensure a

    healthy family environment. Remember

    that children watch you.

It is crucial to never leave children un-

attended or in an unsafe environment.

If your children are left in the care of

someone else while you are at work, for

example, ensure the person can be trust-

ed. If in doubt, find an alternative. Also,

ensure your children know their names,

your name and who to contact in case of

an emergency when they are of a young

    age, she says.

Teach children about the use of social

media, the internet and cellular phones.

They should be made aware of the dan-

gers and rules should be put in place to

prevent them being exposed to preda-

    tors.

Bodasing says its important not to be

    overprotective as long as reasonable

    rules are in place.

Pay attention to them, listen to them,

spend timewith them and let themknow

that you care.Be involved inyour childs

life. Findoutwhat their interests are and

    support them where necessary. Remem-

ber that your child and their well-being

    is your number one priority.

Celebrating its 16th year of supporting local

talent, Sekunjalo Edujazz will be hosting

their annual concert at Artscape Theatre on

Saturday 4 June this time with Jimmy Ne-

    vis as the headline artist.

This annual jazz concert not only supports

    local music development through fundrais-

ing, but also serves as a platform for young

    aspiring musicians from underprivileged

communities to showcase their talent on the

    big stage.

These young bands are given the chance to

work with established headline artists and

some of the greatest music educators that

South Africa has to offer. Extensive work-

shops are conducted by their mentors to help

musicians foster skills and experience in live

    performances.

For this years concert, Jimmy will be

joined by The Belhar Music Collective and

The Edujazz Big Band, comprising top music

students from the University of Cape Town,
