The under-13 boys and girls teams from this school in the suburb of Montana became the national champs after the boys beat Mpumalanga 41-14, and the girls from the same province did not fare any better going down 41-14 in the National Basketball Schools final at the University of Pretoria campus last month. School principal Terrence Timmet beams with pride as he mentions that the two teams, who are coached by deputy principal Craig Daniels, have won this title three times in a row. “They have beaten all the teams in the Western Cape during the course of the play offs,” he says. “Some schools have become fierce opposi- tion but so far could not offer sustained re- sistance to beat us.” This comes as a consequence of having es- tablished the culture of basketball at Monte- video Primary and continued discipline rou- tines which are a very necessary element in the armoury of any team sport. Timmet said minister of sport and recrea- tion, Fikile Mbalula, emphasised the impor- tance of sport being played at grass roots lev- el when he delivered his speech at the gath- ering in Pretoria. “This is what Montevideo under our coach and his support staff has become – a nursery for star basketball players. “There are an increasing number of high schools which are getting involved in bas- ketball and I always hope that the learners who have experienced the sport at primary school will carry it on at high school.” Timmet explained how he understood why their teams can achieve so much suc- cess in the sport. “Every morning when I ar- rive at school during the final term I see the basketball teams already at work on the bas- ketball court which the school developed it- self,” he said. “It is an indictment against the estab- lished school system in South Africa that your top national team does not even have an indoor facility to practise their sport. “Whilst these inequalities of the past still exist, we are still pressing ahead and the ded- ication of the head coach who also serves on the national front to prepare our national teams at different levels, rubs off on our chil- dren.” There is also lots of praise for the coach who has been deputy principal for the past 16 years. “He has gone from strength to strength with the basketball teams because of his un- derstanding of the needs of the communities from which the learners emerge. “A platform is provided for them to launch themselves from the known circumstances to the wonderful unknown through hard work and commitment. “He teaches them that there is a wider world where you can stake your claim if you are prepared to stand your ground through sheer commitment and dedication. “We would like to thank him, his family and former learners who are all fully in- volved in the team coaching and daily man- agement that has led to this success.” V Photos on page 2. The girls basketball team were also crowned national under-13 champs for 2014.

The 2014/15 festive season will go downas one of the safest on record for theCity’s beaches.

The number of drowning incidents havedropped significantly compared with theprevious festive season.Three drowning incidents were recorded

on beaches for the festive season betweenSeptember 2014 and January 2015, com-pared to 18 drowning incidents over thesame period in 2013/14.With tens of thousands of people on the

City’s beaches over the festive season, thisis an extraordinary feat, says City sport, recreation and amenities department di-rector Gert Bam.“We are pleased the combined efforts of

all role players have yielded such positiveresults. The extensive summer safety cam-paign helped educate the public on basicsafety tips to observe when on the beaches. In addition, law enforcement officers havebeen highly visible and have confiscated asubstantial amount of alcohol, whichhelped to reduce the number of incidents as-sociated with intoxication,” he says. The decrease in the number of drowning

incidents also speaks to the quality of thelifeguard service provided by LifesavingWestern Province and their associated life-saving clubs – particularly over the week-ends aroundChristmas andNewYear’sDaywhen a number of people were assisted bythe lifeguards on duty, Bam says.“Despite the drastic drop, every drown-

ing incident is one too many and each inci-dent is documented and reviewed to ensurethat further precautions are taken to pre-vent such incidents from happening in thefuture. We ask that all people respect the in-structions of lifeguards and law enforce-ment officers and report any irresponsiblebehaviour in the water, so that they cankeep people safe.”

The 30-year-old man arrested in connectionwith a series of murders after a number ofbodies were discovered near Century Citystation, was a local security guard.

The suspect is currently facing murderand a rape charges at the Goodwood Magis-trate’s Court, but police are investigatingfurther allegations.

He might be connected to six bodies whichhave been uncovered in an open field nextto the station since February last year.

On Monday, magistrate Sean Lea post-poned the case to 19 January.

The suspect was arrested at his home inGugulethu on Wednesday evening after abreakthrough was made in the search forthe Century City murderer, with the lastbody having been found on 19 December lastyear, Afrikaans daily Die Burger reportedon Friday.

The man was arrested by a task team con-nected to the police’s Operation Combat.

It was reported that the “drugged” sus-pect refused to let the police in when theyknocked on his door.

Victim’s belongingsApparently two items belonging to vic-

tims were found in his room. The man has since also been linked to the

murder of an unidentified woman who wasfound on the Goodwood side of the stationin September 2013.

A reliable source told Die Burger onThursday that the last body, like the others, was naked with the hands tied behind theback and buried in a shallow grave. Thebody was not very badly decomposed andthere were marks, which looked like bruis-es, on her head. All the bodies were of blackwomen.

Besides the bruises, it also looked as if apiece of the woman’s face was “missing”. “Ican’t say if was possibly because of rats inthe bush that ate it, or if the murderer cutit off,” the source says.

It was previously reported that the policewere investigating the possibility that themurders were committed by the same per-son or people, as well as the possibility thatthe Century-City murderer had killed else-where in the province.

IdentifiedSources close to the investigation re-

vealed that the suspect gave himself awayafter he made use of one of his victim’sphones.

One of the victims was identified as No-themba Ndondo from Khayelitsha.

The 20-year-old’s body was found on De-cember 19, four days after she left for work

and did not return home. The Khayelitsha resident reportedly

worked as a cleaner at Ratanga Junction.Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille earlier

issued a reward of R50 000 for anyone withinformation leading to the murderer’s ar-rest.

The aunt of the suspect was recently inter-viewed byDie Burger and described the sus-pect as “quiet, a loner, but alway friendly”.

She added that she is still in a state of dis-belief.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieuten-ant Colonel André Traut, said they will notcurrently be divulging any specifics sur-rounding the case.

Volgens hom is Wolwerivier nie ’n plekvir mense nie. “Daar is absoluut niks.

The Oasis Association has been makinga difference in the lives of the intellec-tually disabled since 1952 and conti-

nues to help improve life for many families. Before 1952 these children were denied

schooling, which led to some determined pa-rents making a difference to their situationby forming their own organisation.Today Oasis provides daily care for over

450 intellectually disabled people at protecti-ve workshops, residential facilities foradults employed at the workshops and whoar in need of a safe and loving home, and daycentres for profoundly or severely intellec-tually disabled children.A new service just been rolled out is an ac-

tivity group for adults who need stimulationbut have difficulty coping with a full day’sproductive work.Filicity September, Day Centre co-ordina-

tor in the Ravensmead area, recently hostedanopendayat the centre andexplained theiractivities.“Thebuilding of the firstOasisDayCentre

was completed inRavensmead in September1988 and admitted approximately 30 chil-dren,” she says.“But as families in and around the Delft

area became desperate for care and basiceducation for their intellectually disabledchildren, it became necessary to keep longwaiting lists as the Oasis Ravensmead DayCentre was full.“The Delft Day Centre started off in a spa-

cious room at the Delft clinic but it quicklybecame too small given the overwhelmingcommunity need.“Thanks to the generosity of two funders,

Oasis Association was able to purchase andrenovate a house in Delft. The centre was of-ficially opened in 2002.“Today the day centres provide develop-

mental care for 70 children and young adultsin Ravensmead and 20 at the Delft Day Cen-tre.”She also pointed out that many of the chil-

drenandyoungadults at centresnot onlyha-ve a profound or severe intellectual disabili-ty, many of them also additional disabilitiessuch as physical disability, epilepsy or chal-lenging behaviour.Although Oasis charges a nominal

monthly fee for a range of services at the daycentres including feeding schemes, dailytransport to and from home, physiotherapy, social work services and developmental pro-grammes tailor-made to meet individualneeds, given the poverty ofmany of the fami-lies in the area, the organisation is depen-

dent on donations to ensure service deliverycan continue for a very vulnerable group ofpeople.“Oasis day centres strive to ensure that

children with severe or profound intellectu-al disability are integrated into the lives oftheir families and community; where theyare accepted for their abilities and not shun-ned because of their disability; where theyare seen as children that need extra protecti-on, care and stimulation,” concluded Sep-tember.If you would like to assist the organisati-

on, they are always in need of the follow-wing: Lego blocks (big and small), woodenpuzzles between 6 and 36 pieces, board storybooks, standing frames (big and small), pow-

dered paint (primary colours), paint brus-hes,musical instruments, various size balls, bean bags, two soccer nets, plastic cricketbats, hoola hoops, pairs of small scissors, matching game cards, stacking games, gar-dening sets for sandplay, toys forwaterplay,CD players, soft toys, toys that make asound, small balls with lights inside and fa-ke grass for theSnoozleRoom (snoozlingme-ans multi-sensory stimulatory activity spe-cifically designed for individuals with seve-re sensory impairments or multipledisabilities. As of 1 February, the City of Cape Townwill be implementing anew load shed-ding schedule.

The current schedule using the days ofthe week was first implemented in 2008. Itwas designed specifically for occasionalload shedding during peak demand times.

“Since the latter weeks of last year, Es-kom’s national control centre declared loadshedding on a regular basis and over week-ends. This has led to a situationwhere someresidents repeatedly experienced scheduledpower outages at the most inconvenienttimes and days of the week.

“In order to address this matter, the Cityhas set up a new load shedding schedulethat provides a more frequent rotation andis to be implemented in accordancewith thedaysof themonth instead,” saysErnest Son-nenberg, the City’smaycomember for utili-ty services.

Thenew schedule ensures residents expe-rience scheduled power outages at a differ-ent time and week day than before.

“From 1 February, the City will be imple-menting load shedding according to thisnew schedule when it is instructed to do so

byEskom. An insertwith thenew load shed-ding schedule and an areamap of the differ-ent supply areas across the city will be dis-tributed with local newspapers during thelast week of January. Residents are advisedto keep these and refer to the schedule andmap so they can take the necessary precau-tions,” says Sonnenberg.

The City has also developed a mobile ver-sion of the load shedding page which resi-dents can access by selecting the new tab onthe City’s mobile homepage. Individual de-tailedmaps of the different areas are availa-ble in PDF and JPG format; by selecting thearea numbers of the PDF area map, resi-dents will be able to view their areas.

Residents can get information about loadshedding from the following sources:

Vir Willem Fransman van Belhar het diemeetsnoere in 2014 op lieflike plekke geval.Hy sien ook die jaar as ’n baie vrugbare

een as skrywer en as atleet. Nie net het hyweer eens ’n opdragwerk vir Radiosonder-grense (RSG) voltooi nie, maar hy’t weereens vir ’n derde agtereenvolgende jaarWP-kleure in atletiek verwerf.Dis ’n opgewonde Fransman wat oor sy

I have been reading withinterest the current debatebetween the anti and pro-gungroups.

Predictably, that old andwell-used expression that“those who live by the swordwill die by the sword” hasmade its appearance. A veryreasonable sentiment, to besure, but it does not stand upto scrutiny from a legitimategun owners point of view.Genghis Khan lived by thesword. So does the modern-dayISIS. Genghis did, and ISISsurely will, die by the sword. The rest of us, who need toprotect ourselves from thosewho, like them, seek to imposetheir will on us, have to livewith the sword. There is a verybig difference here!

Unfortunately, there are fartoo many people in this worldwho, despite what must surelybe an in-built knowledge ofwhat is right and what iswrong, choose to impose theirwill on others. History showsthat has always been how it is– and that is always how it willbe. Whether on a global level,or on a personal level, theprinciple is the same.

As far as divine interventionis concerned, I do not believethat any of the world’s multipleGods are going to come to ouraid and protect us. It would benice if this did happen, though. We would not have to worryabout wearing seat belts, locking our doors and gates orwalking in dark alleys. Wecould eat, drink and smokewhatever we wanted. We couldpark our cars and have nofears that they would not bethere when we came back. Inshort, we could simply rock onand not have to rely on otherpeople and/or clever devices toprotect and save us.

But, in a real world, wecannot just sit back and leaveour safety and wellbeing tosomeone else – or somethingelse. That is a cop-out. We have

to play our part and do whate-ver it takes to help God,whichever one we do (or donot) believe in, to help us. Thetrick here is to ensure thatwhen helping ourselves we donot inadvertently become thebad guys.

The introduction of the newgreen lidded wheelie bins forrecycled waste in the Bellvillearea was an excellent innovati-on. This has given all the localresidents a chance to getinvolved in a useful project.Unfortunately, there alwaysseems to be a downside.

Where I live in La Rochellewe have our normal refuseremoval service on Wednesdayand our recycled material onThursday. It is customary forresidents to put their bins outfirst thing in the morning. Thisis soon followed by a stream ofstrangers who inspect the binsfor useful material. Theirpreference seems to be bottlesand similar saleable objects. Ihave no problem with thesegentlemen collecting thismaterial and disposing of itsomewhere for remuneration. After all we are all endeavou-ring to eke out a living. What Ido feel strongly about is whenthey sit in the park to sort theirsaleable material and leave alltheir discarded mess behind forlocal residents to clean up. Mybiggest concern, however, isthat if this practice escalatesand there is little left in therecycle bins, it would no longerbe profitable for the recyclecompany to continue this verynecessary service.

The homeless problem inBellville is now becomingchronic and if this matter is notseriously attended to we willsoon be having more peopleliving on the streets than in thehouses.

I am disappointed to see howmany shops are opening onChristmas Day and Boxing Day(a day traditionally meant forgiving gifts to employees butinstead, those employees arebeing made to work). Fruit andVeg in Pinehurst as an examp-le. Whether you are Christianor not this is a day normallyspent with family by themajority of South Africans, butnow junior staff are beingexpected to work on these dayswhile senior staff sit at homewith their families. This showsno compassion for staff mem-bers and their personal lives. Itis different if you work inessential services, but a super-market has no need to be open. What happened to the dayswhen stores shut on Sundays? Now shops must be open asoften as possible for as long aspossible, so the guys sitting athome with their families canmake more money. Let yourstaff go home and spend it withtheir families.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Wanneer jy mense daardiereg wil ontneem, maak jy jouself skuldigaan fundamentalisme. Dit is wanneeremosie alle rasionele denke vernietig.

An organisation in Delft is on a mission toempower learners to embrace education.

Pastor Nozi Matomela of the Great Com-missionCommunityProject explained theywere serious about the task at hand.

“In our quest and drive to empower thecommunity of Delft, we conducted a surveyin order to determine key issues that needattention within the community,” she said.

“One of the major issues that caught ourattention in relation to the youth was a highrate of dropouts from school and a lack ofcareer guidance.

“This saw too many learners placing lesseffort in their school work due to the factthat they were not working towards ingoals in their lives. In our view that spellsout a hopeless future for our kids.”

Another major factor they came acrosswas that the learners were from disadvan-taged households that cannot afford the ne-cessities of going to school such as schooluniform, school fees and even stationery.

“We then made it an objective to eradi-cate this matter by starting a back to schoolcampaign which will also serve as a careerexhibition in order to guide our kids thatare at high school level and giving gifts ofschool necessities to children from disad-vantaged backgrounds.

“For the event, which will be held on Sat-urday 7 February, we have extended invita-tions to various government departmentsand educational facilities to partner withus for this day and invite anyone who feelthey can play a part in our mission to offertheir help.

“We want the community and public toembrace us and become part of the visionof a brighter future for our youth and coun-try.”

The event will be held in Delft Thubelit-sha at Hindle High school starting at 12noon.V For further information contact the pastor on 078278 3654 or email [email protected].

TRANS AGULHAS: INDOMITABLE PAIR BEAT FASTER CLASS

Boaters power to a winANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

The two were momentarily suspendedin the air.Underneath them the power boat ro-

ared forward at 80km/h.“Somewhere along the line there is al-

ways a close call,” states the pilot noncha-lantly.Neither of the two could afford to fall off

the boat if their aspiration of finishing firstoverall in the Trans Agulhas Challenge wasto be realised. It was day five of the world’s toughest in-

flatable boat race and they were knee-deepin the long haul. Pilot and co-pilot StefanLindeque and Tony Ingram hoped the131km stretch from Gansbaai to Strandwould be calmanduneventful, but they alsoknew that power boating beyond the waveswas never really “calm and uneventful”.

Limits of enduranceThe twowere thusnot surprisedwhen the

waters became choppier. For 10 kmnearCapeHangklip their endu-

rance was tested to the limits – this afterthey completed 188km on day one, 86km onday two, 161km on day three and 111km onday four.“The stretch from Gansbaai to Strand is

usually flat, but that day it was really chal-lenging. Thepoundingwaterwas extremelyrough. After five days, 10km of poundingwas the last thing we wanted,” says Stefanfrom Table View.At that stage they knew they stood a chan-

ce of not only winning their class, but alsotrumping the faster modified powerboatclass – something never achieved before. But if one of them was thrown overboard

then their chances would be scuppered. After a moment that seemed to last an

eternity, Tony landed on the boat again.A split second later the airborne Stefan

also returned to the inflatable Nulandis. That was close...

Home stretchTheir backswere aching, their armswere

numb, but they were not going to give up.He adds that day three of theTransAghul-

has near Witsand is mentally the toughest. For Stefan, however, Cape Hangklip was

the pinnacle of physical perseverance. But their determination ensured the final

push proceeded without a hitch.Suddenly it was all over. They reached

the shoreandcrownedoverallwinnerswitha time of nine hours and 51 minutes.“We were in a different class, and the mo-

dified class, which is faster than ours, al-ways win the overall.”This victory will taste sweeter than any

of their previous ones, of which there aremany. The 41-year-old Stefan has been World

Championon three occasions andhasneverregretted choosing the sport in 1998.“Having grownup inMelkbosstrand, sur-

fing was always a great love of mine. ThenI saw these boats that can actually race insi-de the surf line andwas drawn to it. I’m justbasically looking for any excuse to get intothe ocean.”Hours in the gym to strengthen his core

muscles, arms and back has paid off and itis clear Stefan is a long way from hangingup his power boating boots. The friendly rivalry between him and

northern suburbs’ Wimpie Ackerman, aswell as his insatiable desire to master thewaves, will keep him pushing the limits.
