Pupils first for forumGARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
Two learners from a Delft high schoolare embarking on a journey of a life-time.
On Friday 29 August, Melissa Cupido andDarren Bailey from Rosendal High boardeda plane for the first time in their lives to rep-resent South Africa at the InternationalCoubertin Youth Forum in Slovakia.Theywill be accompanied by teacher, Jas-
mina Majiet, from The Hague Primary.Majiet explained theywill be the first-ever
South African delegation to attend this fo-rumwhich takes place in a different countryevery two years.“We (The Hague) are in partnership with
Rosendal High aspiring the title and officialstatus of ‘Coubertin School’, which means aschool which specialises in sports or per-forming artswith an emphasis on the valuesof physical education to ensure a coherentand harmonious overall education,” she
says.“This is in line with the ethos of Baron
Pierre de Coubertin who was not only re-sponsible for the rebirth of the modernOlympic Games, but also an educational re-former who believed in the importance ofbringing body, soul and will into harmony.“Schools which are in the process of be-
coming a Coubertin School can be recog-nised as an ‘observer’ school and in this waysend a small number of observers to the fo-rum.”
The trip to Slovakia was made possiblewith the support of the International Cou-bertin Committee, the Foundation for Sport,Development and Peace, as well as MosaicTours in Cape Town.Rosendal principal Chrizelda Layman
was also very excited about the trip for thelearners because it gives them the opportu-nity to realise their positive potential re-gardless of the circumstances from whichthey come.

Prefects at Riverton Primary in Bish-op Lavis went on an exciting week-end away to Zeekoevlei.
On Friday they packed their bags andheaded for the Cape Town EnvironmentalEducation Trust centre on the banks ofZeekoevlei for a weekend of discoveryabout the biodiversity of the peninsula andthe potential that is within themselves.
Grade 6 teacher Thirsten Fischer wasjust as excited as the learnerswhoattendedand is motivated that this must become anannual event.
Speaking at the centre on Saturday after-noon, he pointed out that more childrenfrom the school needed to experience thistype of adventure.
“This is a first for our school and I thinkit must become an annual event for ourprefects,” he said.
“In a short space of time the activitiesthat theydidherenot only gave themanewperspective on the part they can play in thenatural environment around them buthow they can believe in themselves andwork together as a team.
“Last night they had to do a night naturewalk, this morning worked on a presenta-tion about leadership, and with every ac-tivity they’re realising that the responsi-bility for their own lives is in their hands.”
Principal Andrew Swartz also accompa-
nied the children and was just as excited asFischer.
“For our prefects this camp gives them abetter insight about how they should be asleaders at our school,” he said.
“Through the activities they have seenhow they can becomepositive role-models atthe school learning lessons from nature.
“I am also convinced that this should bean annual event/camp but we need somepartners to help us make this dream a reali-
ty.“There are too many children who come
fromunemployed families butwe believewecanmake it happen with some support fromsponsors or individuals who want to makea difference in the lives of our youth.”The camp culminated with choosing the
head boy and girl as well as their deputies.

verse educational programme on sport;peace; fair play and international relations;practical activities; leadership sessions anddiscussions on the Olympic values andwhat they mean for our society today.”Last weekMelissa, a Grade 9 learner, was
very excited about her upcoming journey.“When I wrote my essay for the forum I
never knew that Iwould be chosen but Iwasoverjoyed when the teachers told me thatI would be attending,” she said.“Iwant to thankmy teachers for believing

If you want to find out about the paroleboard and how it works, Belhar police willhost an imbizo on Tuesday 15 September.
Starting at 10:00, it will be hosted at theMorea Congregation Church (cor Haarlemand Batavia roads) and is being conductedin partnership with Belhar SAPS, BelharCPF and the Goodwood parole board.
Captain Herman de Jager the acting sta-tion commander of Belhar said the aim ofthe imbizo is to promote healthier environ-ments for reintegration of offenders and toalso assist victims of crime in healing fromthe trauma.
“A Victim Offender Dialogue (VOD) is aspace whereby an offender and victim ex-change dialogue about the effects of crimeon the parties involved (and can be extend-ed to anyone that has been also affected),”he says.
“Through the process of VOD, our experi-ence has shown healing does take place, which in turn assists in the reintegrationof the offender back into the society.“Victims of crime become aware of the
processes the offender has undergonethrough rehabilitation inside of the Correc-tional Centre, and are also able to have anyadditional uncertainties about possible fu-ture parole or supervision placement re-sponded to after this process.”De Jager said it is important that commu-
nity members are enlightened about theprocesses of correctional supervision andthe parole board so they can know that theytoo play a role in how the offenders are ac-cepted back into the community.“They also need to know they can play a
role in supervising our parolees’ behaviourwhilst they are in the system.
V For more information call De Jager on 021 9538100 or 021 953 8114.

Ek is
Onwettige pad in Ruyterwacht skep probleme
With African Traditional MedicineWeek 2015 having come to an end on31 August, the Tygerberg Hospital
warned that combining herbal remedieswith conventional drugs can be harmful.
Apopularherbal remedy,MoringaOleife-ra (MO), colloquially known as “Saviour ofthe Poor”, could interfere with antiretrovi-ral treatment (ART) and have toxic effectswhen used concurrently with ART and oth-er conventional medicine, says Dr CharlesAwortwe, a researcher in clinical pharma-cology at the Stellenbosch University Tyg-erberg campus.“In South Africa up to eight in 10 people
with HIV use traditional medicines at sometime,” Awortwe says.
His research on MO, also called “MiracleTree”, “Tree of Life”, “Mother’s BestFriend” or “God’s Gift toMan”, showed thattakingMO as a herbal supplement could po-tentially worsen the health of patients ondrug treatment.MO is rich in protein, calcium, iron and
vitamin C, and is used in the managementof about 300 medical and lifestyle condi-tions, includingHIV, cancer, arthritis, asth-ma, high cholesterol levels (hypercholester-olemia) and high blood sugar levels (hyper-
glycaemia). It is also used as an aphrodisiacor to prevent pregnancy. However, none ofthese uses are currently supported by goodscientific evidence.“A major concern is the concomitant use
of herbal medicines alongside conventionaldrug treatments,” says Awortwe. “It is well
known that herbal products can interferewith the enzymes responsible for the chemi-cal breakdown of drugs in the body andtherefore have an effect on the clinical effi-cacy of a drug or its toxicity.”
Awortwe’s research found thatMO inhib-ited two important enzymes – one responsi-ble for the breakdown of ART, cardiovascu-lar and anti-anxiety drugs, and the other re-sponsible for the elimination of drugsdecreasing gastric acid secretion, anti-ar-rhythmics and anti-malarials –which couldcause toxicity.
According to Awortwe, one-third of casesof acutekidney failure inAfrica are estimat-ed to be caused by traditional medicines.
Another important example of drug inter-action between herbal and conventionalmedicine is the birth of “miracle babies” inwomen who are taking oral birth control atthe same timeasSt John’sWort. Thisherbalproduct stimulates the elimination of thehormones present in the birth control pills, thereby rendering it ineffective.
“The use of herbal medicines is increas-ing all over the world and many consumersassume that because these products areherbal or natural, they are also completelysafe, but this is not true,” says Awortwe.
Mixing muti harms health

There’s a buzz in Bishop Lavis following theannouncement that upgrades are in line forthe suburb.Rose Rau, chairperson for subcouncil 5,
has confirmed the tender for the planning ofthe Bishop Lavis Urban Node Upgrade wasawarded to ARG Design and a steering com-mittee from the area has been elected. She said this phase of the project is expect-
ed to take about 18 months in collaborationwith the consultant team that include ARGDesign, public participation professionals, civil and transport engineering, and a safetyanalyst. The project manager for the City of Cape
Town is Bronwen Jillings.“On Tuesday 18 August the members of
the consultant team met at ward councillorAsa Abraham’s office and did a walkabout
of the core area.“This walk started at the civic centre,
moved on through the town centre itself, crossed over on the route to the LavistownStation and came back through the sports fa-cilities, continued up to the park betweenKasteelberg and Vygie Roads and returnedto the councillor’s office.“This visit enabled the team members to
engage the community and experience first-hand the current status of the area and theexisting facilities.”Rau also pointed out that another impor-
tant step in this process was the establish-ment of the project steering committee. This committee comprises representa-
tives from arts and culture, civic associa-tion, faith based (Christian andMuslim), ed-ucation, youth, sport, safety and security, formal business, informal traders, physical-ly challenged and vulnerable group, as wellas NGOs.

Wards fund skills programmeTheCity of CapeTown’s Subcouncil 5, in col-laboration with the Economic DevelopmentDepartment, has created an opportunity forresidents to develop their skills by fundinga computer skills training programme. The funding, fromward allocations, made
it possible for residents in wards 13, 20 and106 in Delft and ward 50 in Bonteheuwel toregister for the training programme. Sub-council 5 includes the areas of Bonteheuwel,Bishop Lavis, Valhalla Park and Delft. The purpose of this development project
was to give students a chance to develop cer-tain skills so that they would become moreemployable. The SETA-accredited trainingcourse includedmodules inMS Excel, Inter-net Explorer and MS Outlook. At a total cost of R145 000 across the three
Delftwards, 75 students fromall ages succes-sfully completed the training earlier this ye-
ar. A graduation ceremony for graduatesfrom Delft took place last week at the HagueCommunity Centre, while 12 students fromBonteheuwel also received their certificateslast week.Offering this training forms part of the Ci-
ty’s commitment to work together with thecommunity to create opportunities for skillsdevelopment.“This investment inhuman capital not on-
ly transfers useful skills, but also increaseseach participant’s chances of entering thejob market,” said the chairperson of Sub-council 5 Rose Rau.“The service provider, Eagle Computer
Training, was so impressed by some of thestudents in the course that they have beenabsorbed into the company and will be trai-ned as future trainers. This is what creatingopportunities is all about.”
Woensdag, 2 September 2015 NEWS TYGERBURGER Elsiesrivier 7
Children and mothers ofnewborn babies have ex-perienced the joy and be-
nefits of reading thanks to a pro-ject at Tygerberg Children’sHospital. The project has been initiated
by a neonatologist working atthe hospital, Miemie du Preez, whowas inspired to instil a loveof reading and bonding betweenbabies and their mothers. The reading project has star-
ted with premature babies, so-meof themweighingbarelyaki-logram, but will be extended toinclude children and teenagers.Du Preez says starting with
premature babies was the natu-ral first step.“As premature babies have
had less time in the womb, theyneed to hear the sound of theirmother’s voice. Reading nurse-ry rhymes has been proven tostimulate the baby’sbrain. If a parent re-ads to a baby, thebrain lights up.”Du Preez says a
study had shownthat premature ba-bies that are read tofor 15 minutes threetimes a week hadbetter neurologicaloutcomes. “You’reliterally growingtheir brains by rea-ding to them.”Each mother is gi-
ven a booklet of lul-labies and nurseryrhymes which areavailable in English,Xhosa, Afrikaansand other langua-ges. They markthem individuallywith the footprintand handprint oftheir baby. The mo-thers, who stay withtheir premature ba-bies until they arestrong enough to gohome – often a cou-ple of months – keepa note of their rea-ding times.Mother Ncumisa Mzinjani,
who comes from Mfuleni in Ca-pe Town, says it’s been a rewar-ding experience for both herand her baby boy.“He knows it’s me. He recog-
nises my voice. It’s calming andhe enjoys the rhythm. I can feelthathe loves it. Itmakesmehap-py too. I want to do the best formy baby and help him to growup well.”Mzinjani said she would con-
tinue reading to Indiphile, whohas grown from a fragile 750grams to a much stronger boyweighing nearly 1.2 kilogramswithin six weeks. The library at the Tygerberg
Children’s Hospital school isopening its doors so that all chil-dren, including those who areoutpatients at the hospital, canstart to experience the joy of re-ading.“The library is a safe haven to
enjoy shared reading. We hopeit will ignite the imagination ofchildren and start to nurture alove for books and reading froma young age,” said du Preez.A shared reading experiences
from a young age is one of thestrongest predictors of a child’sacademic success.
“Reading canmakeabig diffe-rence in literacy and success atschool. We can’t do without it.In South Africa, 51% of Grade 1children in South Africa don’thave a single recreational bookat home.We desperately need toget children to read. If we canspread the benefits of shared re-ading, it could change the edu-cational outcome in South Afri-ca.”Medical students from Stel-
lenbosch University, togetherwith nurses and volunteers, will take the mothers and chil-dren to the library on the hospi-tal grounds and will be able todemonstrate shared reading tothe mothers.Trollies of books will be intro-
duced into the wards for chil-drenwho are not well enough togo to the library. Du Preez saiddoctors had also come on board
and would write scripts that en-couraged reading as part of thechild’s management plan.Nurses at the hospital have al-
so welcomed the project.“It’s very important and sti-
mulating for the babies. It alsogood for themothers and caregi-vers. It’s empowering,” saysnurse Martha Gertze.Du Preez hopes reading will
become a habit for mothers andbabies and children once theyleave the hospital and spark arealization of the critical rolereading plays in boosting voca-bulary.Ideally, du Preez would like
every child at the hospital to gohome with a book.DuPreez’s projecthas thebac-
king of the Tygerberg Chil-dren’s Hospital Trust, whichraises funds to support the careof more than 16 000 babies andchildren who are admitted tothe hospital every year.V To support this project at TygerbergChildren’s Hospital Trust, contactfund-raiser, Malcolm Kling at 021 9389583 or [email protected]. City rebate available forelderly home ownersAt the recent subcouncil 4 meeting, chairperson Clive Justus remindedsenior citizens to make use of the City’srebate scheme for basic services.“The City of Cape Town municipalityprovides a generous rates rebate schemefor its senior citizens. If you are over 60years of age, own your own home andhave a monthly income of R12 000 orbelow then you could qualify for thisbenefit,” he said.V Application forms can be downloaded atwww.capetown.gov.za/en/rev/Pages/Application-Forms.aspx or collected from the Parowmunicipal payment enquiries desk.

Blue municipal waste bags arenot for sale and those sellingthem obtained them illegally.
This is according to Clive Justus, chairperon of subcouncil 4. At the re-cent subcouncil meeting, Justus re-quested the greater Parow andGood-wood communities report wherethese bags are being sold at trafficlights along Voortrekker Road andeven in some shops.Justus said selling the bags is not
only illegal, it also creates the oppor-tunity for people to use them forhouseholdwastewhich is then left inthe street, often for weeks.“The council workers sweeping
the streets are often accused of leav-ing the blue bags along the street.
This practicecannot be justi-fied and a strictinstruction hasbeen given to re-move the bagson the day.“However, of-
ten the bluebags containinghouseholdrefuse are lefton the footway,in the park or onvacant land byresidents hav-ing made use ofthe illegally ob-tained blue
bags.“It is then assumed that council’s
area cleaning staff is negligent, whilst that is not the case,” he said.Earlier in 2015, the words “Not for
sale” were printed on all the munici-pal bags, but despite this, hawkersstill boldly sell them.“The blue bags are specific to City
of Cape Town and are used by areacleaning staff and are issued to con-tractors performing work on behalfof the council.“It is apparent that the blue bags
that are issued to contract staff is be-ing abused by onselling to unsus-pecting customers.“The conscientious ratepayer is
being defrauded when the bags arenot used for the intended purpose.“Contractors and permanent staff
have been disciplined, but the prac-tise of selling blue refuse bags at ma-jor intersections such as Jakes Ger-wel and Voortrekker roads contin-ues unabated,” Justus said.V To report any one selling the printed bags, contact the City’s solid waste managementbranch for loss control on 021 900 1689.

A new motor racing record will be setwhen 14-year-old Giordano Lupinifaces the starter for the firstGTiChal-
lenge race.During the seventh round of the Wing-field Motors sponsored (Flower) Power Se-ries at Killarney on Saturday, he will beco-me theWestern Cape’s youngest ever maincircuit competitor.Although the boy has had a measure ofexperience on the go-kart track, it won’t beeasy. The GTi Challenge is a metallic con-tact sport and not for sissies. The cars are divided into three mechani-cally equal classes and it then up to thedriver to produce the results. Lupini’s op-position in a crowded class C is going to in-clude characters like Table View’s grittyreigning champion Paul Simon, EbrahimLevy, the man who would be king and thefast improving Dewald Lubbe. They arecertainly not going to make any allowancefor his age. However while Lupini’s debut will be in-teresting, Saturday’s high speed drama ismore likely to come from four of the fastestsports cars in South Africa. Gauteng’s le-gendaryTobyVenter is going tobe inaction
here in his very special Porsche GT2R andhe will be challenging a giant 8.4 litre, V10Dodge Viper driven by Blaauwberg’s CraigJarvis aswell as current sports car champi-on Francis Carruthers who will be at thewheel of his potent Juno SS3.An additional threat is likely to be posedby Johan Engelbrecht in another PorscheGT2R. This driver was in fine form whileon his way to victory at the most recent Po-wer Series meeting and the so far unbeatenToby Venter may be in for a surprise. The big one-makeV8 Supercar contest al-so promises to be a hard fought affair. Here, the reigning titleholder and former SouthAfrican Superkart championMarcel Angelis in overall second place behind the Bo-land’s Richard Schreuder.Although Angel won last month’s battle,he is five points behindSchreuder andonlyone point ahead of a challenging Fabio Ta-fani, as the Series moves towards its close.Watch out for Polo driver “Trappies” vanTonder in the Midas Clubman class. Alt-hough competing in a lower category thanclass A hotshots like Andre and AlexJohnson in their Audi Quattros as well asthe Beemers of Ebrahim Levy and AchmatAchmat and Clint Rennard’s VW Golf, hehas been piling up the points
