Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this pray-er for our sick brothers and sister whom you have re-deemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

The Single-Minded Pursuit of the Kingdom

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Matthew 13: 44-52: Jesus continues to speak to the crowds in parables, as we have heard for the last few weeks. We know that the central theme of his preaching revolved around the Kingdom of God, or of heaven. In Matthew’s Gospel, the expression “Kingdom of heaven,” rather than “of God,” is used much more often since the evangelist, although a Chris-tian himself, had a very Jewish background—and traditional Jews tried NOT to mention God. For Matthew, “heaven” was a reverential circumlocution for God’s sacred name… Anyway, many Catholics believe that Jesus’ main mis-sion on earth was to establish the Church. The Church: he did found, but his main mission was to proclaim the Kingdom. But what exactly was the “Kingdom” preached by Jesus? That question has puzzled biblical scholars throughout the centuries. If you read through the four canonical Gospels, I do not think you can draw a good conclusion about the precise nature of the king-dom of God/heaven. Certainly, it cannot be understood in the worldly sense. It is not a territorial reality, like the United Kingdom. And a note to all Catholics: the Church is NOT the Kingdom. The Kingdom of God/heaven is much more

important than the Church… All in all, one can say that the Kingdom, in a basic sense, refers to God’s rule, or God’s reign, in and through history.

Matthew 13:44-46 presents two more of Jesus’ parables about the Kingdom: “[It] is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, [it] is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.” The second parable is very straightforward. The first needs some elaboration. Back in the days of Jesus, it was common to bury valuable things to protect them. The person who finds the treasure in someone else’s field hides it again in that field. Then he puts all his energy in buying that field to obtain that treas-ure. An ethical issue comes up here: would he be entitled to that treasure when he buys the field, assuming that the previous owner knows nothing about the treasure? The parable presumes that the new owner was indeed entitled to that treasure found in the field he just bought.

Anyway, the point of these parables is very clear: the Kingdom of heaven is to be sought with a single-minded devotion. This takes us back to one of Jesus’ famous beatitudes at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount: “Blessed are the pure of heart,” (Mt 5:8). As I mentioned before, the biblical concept of purity of heart does not refer to sexual purity. Rather, to be pure of heart means to be single-minded. And whatever the Kingdom of God/heaven was, we can safely say that in the context of Jesus’ preaching, it must always be searched for wholeheartedly and single-mindedly!

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM
