Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this prayer for our sick brothers and sister whom you have redeemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

God, our shelter and our strength, you listen in love to the cry of your people: hear the prayers we offer for our depart-ed brothers and sisters. Cleanse them of their sins and grant them the fullness of redemption. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
FATHER ANTHONY’S FAITH FORMATION CORNER
Mary in the Lukan Infancy Narrative
Among the four canonical Gospels that we have, only Matthew and Luke have the so-called “Infancy Narratives,” or the stories surrounding the birth of Jesus. The author of Matthew’s Gospel was a typical writer in antiqui-ty: he had Joseph the husband of Mary as the central figure in his Infancy Narrative, as would be expected in a patriarchal society. Luke’s Gospel, how-ever, is different. The author of Luke had a soft spot for the underprivileged and marginalized of society. Thus, in the Lukan Infancy Narrative, Mary, a female, is the central character… Our Gospel reading for this 4th Sunday of Advent is Luke 1:26-38. But one should read the entire Infancy Narrative (Luke chapter 1 and parts of Luke 2) to get the whole picture. Two of the main characters here are Zechariah (an elderly and righteous priest whose elderly wife is Elizabeth) and Mary (a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph of Nazareth). The angel Gabriel visits them both: bringing the joyful news of the birth of their two future sons, despite the obvious limitations that stand in their ways—old age and barrenness in the case of Zechariah and Elizabeth; youth and virginity in the case of Mary. The reader can immediately anticipate that the two sons—John the Baptist and Jesus—are destined for greatness. But there is also a big contrast between them, as is evident from the angel’s announcements. For example: John will be great before the Lord (Lk 1:15), but Jesus will be great and will be called Son of the Most High (1:32); John will prepare a people (1:17), but Jesus will rule the people (1:33); John’s role is that of a prophet (1:15), but Jesus is more than a prophet—he is the Son of God (1:35); etc. However, there is another set of contrast: between Zechariah and Mary. The former is a priest—of course not a “Roman Catholic” priest as we understand the concept today; but a priest, who in the biblical traditions, offers sacrifices and mediates the presence of God. He and his elderly wife Elizabeth are described as “righteous, walking blamelessly in the commandments of the Lord” (1:6). Furthermore, he appears in the Temple offering incense to the Lord. Such a description must have been very appealing to the ancient audience! In all likelihood, Zechariah is a respectable man in society. In contrast to him, Mary really appears out of nowhere. Being a woman, she holds no official position in her community. She is among the most powerless in her society: young in a society that values age; female in a very patri-archal world; and presumably poor as well. Furthermore, she has no husband or child yet to even validate her exist-ence—for a woman was only defined in relation to a man in that patriarchal society. However, it is Mary and not Zecha-riah who has “found favor” with God (1:30). Any audience in the ancient world would have picked Zechariah as the “favored” one. That Mary has found favor with God shows that God’s activity is at times surprising and can defy ordi-nary human expectations… These passages from the Lukan Infancy Narrative have become very influential in shaping Marian piety/devotion over the centuries. Because of our strong devotions to Mary, we Catholics sometimes think that these are sto-ries about Mary. But a more profound examination of them reveals that they are not so much about Mary, but more about how God is able to work in and through human beings, despite their obvious limitations. The ways that God works to carry out his will are quite surprising, and sometimes very contrary to our expectations!!!

Open Hearts are Giving Hearts The Diocese of Orange held a PASTATHON to aid Chef Bruno and Caterina’s Club in their mission to feed children. Students from St. Barbara Catholic School donated 709 pounds of pasta and 360 pounds of sauce to the food drive. Chef Bruno and Caterina’s Club serves over 3,500 warm nutritional meals to underprivileged children every single night. In spite of his own restaurant, Anaheim White House, burning down, he continues to serve by using the kitchens of other restaurants. We are happy to be able to help feed so many needy chil-dren through our donations.
