REFLECTION ON THE WORD OF GOD Six weeks into our Easter rejoicing, the Church gives us readings today that start preparing us for a return to ordinary life. The Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel both dwell on proper daily behavior for followers of Jesus, while the reading from Revelation reminds us why we bother with laws at all. In Acts, leaders of the church meet to discuss which essential elements of the Mosaic Law converts must obey if they wish to be disciples of Jesus Christ. John’s Gospel reflects back to the Last Supper discourse when Jesus himself emphasizes the importance of obeying God’s commandments. Observing God’s law, says Jesus, shows a desire to be intimate with the Lord. We follow rules not for their own sake, but to love God and neighbor better. This more excellent love brings us closer to Revelation’s vision of paradise, gleaming with “the splendor of God.” TWO GARDENS The independent streak in every human heart can resent rules and regulations. We often rebel against the idea of blindly following rules we did not create for ourselves. We have inherited this willfulness from Adam and Eve, who could not resist eating from the one tree God strictly outlawed in the Gar-den of Eden. Jesus, fully human and fully divine, personally understands our desire to do things ourselves. In his own garden, the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus transformed human history. Instead of following his own inclinations, Jesus offered his decision-making, his free will, his very life, to God. As the Gospel of Luke tells us, Jesus “was in such agony and he prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground.” Observing God’s law is not easy, not even for the Son of God. But Jesus promises that keeping God’s words will bring us peace. Jesus’ submission led to resurrection; our obedience will calm our hearts, allowing God to dwell deep within. IT TAKES A COUNCIL Even if we restrain our willfulness and cultivate the desire to obey God’s commandments, we still face the very real difficulty of discerning exactly what it is God seems to want from us. The early church agonized over this in the first years after Jesus’ ascension. Many people of good will, all trying to obey God, came to drasti-cally different conclusions about how to imitate Jesus. Our reading from Acts today explains “there arose no little dissension” among the new believers. So the church leaders gathered together to pray and discuss—as we still do today. That first church council, the Council of Jerusalem, settled a question not explicitly ad-dressed by Jesus while on earth. Christians today have inherited that sublime legacy of gathering in discern-ment. Thánh Augustine - Canterbury 27 Tháng Năm
Vào năm 596, một nhóm đan sĩ 30 người khởi hành từ Rôma đi truyền giáo cho người Anglo-Saxon ở Anh. Dẫn đầu là Au-gustine, bề trên đan viện Thánh Anrê ở Rôma. Nhưng khi đến Gaul (Pháp) họ nghe những câu chuyện dã man về người Anglo-Saxon cũng như sự nguy hiểm của các luồng nước ở eo biển, họ quay trở về Rôma và gặp vị giáo hoàng đã sai họ đi -- Thánh Grêgôriô Cả -- và đức giáo hoàng cho biết sự lo sợ của họ thì vô căn cứ.
Một lần nữa Augustine lại ra đi, và lần này cả nhóm đã vượt qua eo biển và cập bến đất Kent thuộc về Vua Ethel-bert, là người ngoại giáo kết hôn với một Kitô Hữu, bà Ber-tha, công chúa nước Pháp. Vua Ethelbert tiếp đón họ nồng hậu, thiết lập cho họ nơi cư trú ở Canterbury và trong năm ấy, vào Chúa Nhật Hiện Xuống năm 597, chính nhà vua đã được rửa tội.
Sau khi được tấn phong làm giám mục ở Pháp, Ðức Au-gustine trở lại Canterbury, là nơi ngài thiết lập giáo phận và khởi công xây dựng vương cung thánh đường. Khi số tín hữu ngày càng gia tăng, các giáo phận khác được ngài mở thêm ở Luân Ðôn và Rochester.
Cuộc đời Ðức Augustine cũng gặp nhiều thất bại. Những cố gắng hòa giải giữa Kitô Hữu Anglo-Saxon và Kitô Hữu Briton bản xứ đã kết thúc trong thất bại đau buồn. Ðức Au-gustine cũng không thuyết phục được người Briton từ bỏ một số phong tục khác biệt với Rôma và quên đi những cay đắng để giúp ngài phúc âm hóa người Anglo-Saxon, là kẻ xâm lăng đã dồn người Briton về miền tây.
Sau những thất bại, Ðức Augustine đã khôn ngoan hơn để ý đến các nguyên tắc truyền giáo -- đối với thời bấy giờ thật sáng suốt mà Ðức Giáo Hoàng Grêgôriô Cả đề nghị: Hãy thanh tẩy thay vì tàn phá các đền thờ và các phong tục ngoại giáo; hãy du nhập các nghi thức và ngày lễ của người ngoại giáo vào ngày lễ Kitô Giáo; duy trì các truyền thống địa phương càng nhiều càng tốt.
Sau tám năm đến Anh, sự thành công của Ðức Augustine tuy hạn hẹp nhưng sau này đã đem lại kết quả tốt đẹp là cả nước Anh đã tòng giáo. Quả thật, Thánh Augustine đáng được gọi là "Tông Ðồ của Anh Quốc". Lời Trích

Cha của Thầy và Thầy sẽ đến và ở lại với người ấy.” (Ga 14,23) Suy niệm: Có ai nghe những lời yêu đương mà dùng tam đoạn luận để phân tích lý sự đâu, phải không bạn? Vì thế khỏi cần cắt nghĩa dài dòng, bạn chỉ cần lắng nghe, cảm nghiệm để thấm thía càng lúc càng sâu và để lòng tràn ngập niềm vui hạnh phúc về lời tâm tình này của Chúa Giê-su: “Ai yêu mến Thầy, thì sẽ giữ lời Thầy. Cha Thầy sẽ yêu mến người ấy. Cha của Thầy và Thầy sẽ đến và ở lại với người ấy.” Vâng, Thiên Chúa chỉ yêu thích đến và ở lại với ai biết mở lòng ra đón nhận lời Ngài và tuân giữ. Mời Bạn: Bạn là người đang được Chúa yêu và được Chúa đến cư ngụ, mời bạn đưa những tâm tình nồng nàn, thắm thiết của người đang yêu và được yêu đó vào khung cảnh gia đình bạn, cộng đoàn bạn để biến những nơi đó thành những tổ ấm mọi người yêu thương, hoà hợp với nhau, sống trung thành hy sinh cho nhau để mọi người cùng hạnh phúc vì được hiện diện trong tình thương mến nhau. Còn lời chứng nào cho tình yêu Chúa hùng hồn hơn cảnh một cộng đoàn hiện diện trong tình yêu Thiên Chúa, phải không bạn? Sống Lời Chúa: Ôn lại tâm tình nồng nàn yêu thương mà bạn có được trong giờ suy niệm và chia sẻ với tha nhân qua một nghĩa cử bác ái phục vụ. Cầu nguyện: Ôi Giê-su, cám ơn Chúa về bài học yêu thương Chúa dạy con hôm nay: Chúa không ưa thích ngự nơi các đền thờ bằng gỗ đá quý mà chỉ ưa thích ở lại trong tâm hồn con, khi con biết yêu thích sống Lời Chúa! DOS JARDINES Esa línea marcada en cada cora-zón humano puede resentir las re-glas y regulaciones. A menudo nos rebelamos en contra de la idea de seguir ciegamente las reglas que nosotros no creamos para nosotros mismos. Heredamos esta volunta-riedad de Adán y Eva, quienes no pudieron resistir comer el fruto del árbol del jardín del Edén que Dios estrictamente les había prohibido. Jesús, completamente humano y completamente divino, personalmente entendió nues-tro deseo de hacer cosas por nosotros mismos. En su propio jardín, el jardín de Getsemaní, Jesús trans-formó la historia humana. En lugar de seguir sus pro-pios sentimientos, Jesús ofreció su decisión, su libre voluntad, su propia vida a Dios. Así como el Evange-lio de Lucas nos dice “lleno de angustia, oraba más intensamente, y comenzó a sudar como gotas de sangre que corrían hasta el suelo”. Obedecer la ley de Dios no es fácil, ni siquiera para el Hijo de Dios. Pero Jesús promete que guardar la Palabra de Dios nos traerá paz. La entrega de Jesús guio a la resu-rrección, nuestra obediencia calmará nuestros cora-zones, permitiendo que Dios habite en lo profundo.
REQUIERE DE UN CONSEJO Aun si contenemos nuestra voluntad y cultivamos el deseo de obedecer los mandamientos de Dios, toda-vía enfrentamos la verdadera dificultad de discernir exactamente lo que Dios parece querer de nosotros. La Iglesia primitiva se preocupó por esto en los pri-meros años después de la Ascensión de Jesús. Mu-chas personas de buena voluntad, todos intentando obedecer a Dios, llegaron a conclusiones drástica-mente diferentes acerca de cómo imitar a Jesús. Nuestra lectura del libro de los Hechos de hoy explica que “este hecho provocó una acalorada discusión” en medio de los nuevos creyentes. Así que los líderes de la Iglesia se reunieron para orar y discutir, así co-mo se hace hasta el día de hoy. Ese primer consejo, el Consejo de Jerusalén, dio una respuesta a la pre-gunta que Jesús no respondió explícitamente mien-tras estuvo en la Tierra. Los cristianos de hoy en día han heredado ese legado sublime de reunirse y dis-cernir.
