Welcome to Waverley Sixth Form. Our Sixth Form specialises in developing the aptitudes and entrepreneurial skills of all our students to ensure their future economic success. Our courses are designed to provide outstanding success for all students. Our focus is firmly placed in work related and applied subject fields. We offer A level courses as well as BTEC level 2 & 3 courses which provide our students with an entry level into the world of work and access to further education opportunities. We also work closely with local employers to provide effective work experience placements throughout their stay in the

Sixth Form. This helps students gain confidence, experience and work place skills to develop their professional portfolio. Our students are well placed to join the world of work, training and further education.

WELCOME

Waverley Cricket Academy

At the heart of our Sixth Form is the ‘Waverley Cricket Academy’ sponsored by Warwickshire County Cricket and the English Cricket Board. Students joining our Sixth Form have the opportunity to enter our ‘Cricket Academy.’ This provides them with the opportunity to train weekly at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground by the very best coaches.

Finally, the English Cricket Board through Warwickshire County Cricket association have supported the school in the creation of our own cricket ground on the Belchers Lane site together with an FA standard football pitch for the use of our students and local clubs.

New Sixth Form Site

Further exciting developments will see our Sixth Form move into purpose built accommodation with state of the art facilities for September 2013. We are currently working with sponsors and Birmingham City Council to plan these exciting new facilities which will help ensure that our students and our community can thrive and prosper.

Our unique Enrichment Programme and work experience provides the ideal stepping stone between the world of school and the independence of university or work. A strong ethos exists which nurtures, encourages and supports a culture of high academic standards and expectation. Through our outstanding teaching, partnerships, industry links, pastoral care and monitoring we aim to foster ambition and a culture of high expectations and standards. Our students will not only achieve their personal best but exceed all expectations.

What courses are available?

At Waverley School Sixth Form we offer two routes of study, vocational and academic. Students will select their route based on their career destinations and course requirements.

Routes of Study

• GCE A Levels are classed as Level 3 Qualifications, and provide the opportunity to access Degree level courses.

• BTEC Diplomas are offered at both level 2 and level 3 as appropriate. These courses are vocational and can lead either to direct employment or further study, level 3 courses can lead to degree level study. All of our vocational courses have a supported programme of work experience, allowing students to put into practice many of the skills being taught on a day-to-day basis.

BIOLOGY A LEVELAbout the course

This is a two year course for those students who have a desire to learn more about how living things work. This course provides a smooth transition from GCSE to Advanced Biology. You will develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles of Biology, gain hands-on practical skills and data analysis skills and understand the relevance of Biology beyond the laboratory. Some students may wish to follow a Biology course for only one year as an AS GCE, in order to broaden their curriculum. Others will continue their course to Advanced GCE.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade A*- C, including a grade B or above in Sciences (Higher Tier), English and Maths.

What will I Iearn?

This course prepares students to progress into Further Education, to follow courses in Biology, Medicine or one of the other Sciences or related subjects, or enter employment where knowledge of Biology would be useful.

CHEMISTRY A LEVELAbout the course

This is a two year course provides a range of transferable skills and develops your ability to apply your knowledge to new problems. This course provides a smooth transition from GCSE to Advanced Chemistry as chemical concepts are introduced within a relevant context. You will develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of Chemistry concepts, gain hands-on practical skills and data analysis skills and understand the relevance of Chemistry beyond the laboratory. Some students may wish to follow a Chemistry course for only one year as an AS GCE, in order to broaden their curriculum. Others will continue their course to Advanced GCE.

5 GCSEs at Grade A* - C, including a grade B or above in Sciences (Higher Tier), English and Maths.

This course prepares students to progress into Further Education, and is an essential requirement for some courses such as Medicine and Dentistry.

Students might choose to follow courses in Chemistry, Engineering, one of the other Sciences or related subjects, or enter employment where a knowledge of Chemistry would be useful.

ENGLISH A LEVELAbout the course

Studying for these qualifications will enable you to develop: your interest and enjoyment of reading and discussing literary texts; your knowledge and understanding of a wide range of English literature texts and your skills of literary analysis.

This qualification gives you the opportunity to study literature across the genres of prose, poetry and drama, and to read around concepts of literature and literary analysis.

5 GCSEs at Grade A* - C, including a grade B or above in English.

What will I Iearn?

The AS GCE is made up of two mandatory units, one of which is externally assessed and one which is internally assessed, and form 50% of the corresponding four-unit Advanced GCE.

The Advanced GCE is made up of two mandatory units at AS and two further mandatory units at A2. One of the A2 units is externally assessed and the other A2 unit is internally assessed.

AS Units: Unit F661: Poetry and Prose 1800 - 1945 is an externally-assessed written paper and represents 60% of the marks for AS (30% of A level).

Unit F662: Literature post - 1900 is an internally-assessed portfolio of work. It represents 40% of the marks for AS (20% of A level).

A2 Units: Unit F663: Drama and Poetry pre - 1800 is an externally-assessed written paper. It represents 30% of the marks for A level.

Unit F664: Texts in Time is an internally-assessed extended study. It represents 20% of the marks for A level.

What can I go on to?

English is welcomed in many different careers as it emphasizes creativity, disciplined thought and communication, plus an ability to synthesise and contextualise ideas.

English Literature provides an excellent foundation for anyone considering a career in Media, Education, Law, the Arts, Psychology and Sociology.

HISTORY A LEVELAbout the course

This two year course provides students with a range of transferable skills and develops their ability to apply knowledge to new problems. This course offers a smooth transition from GCSE History and touches upon British, European and World History. Students will develop in-depth knowledge about change and continuity over a short and long period of time focusing on topics with historical detail and rigour. Students will also learn about the relationship between the state and its people and the forces that influence it. Some students may wish to follow a History course for only one year at AS level in order to broaden their curriculum. Others will continue their course for two years to complete the Advanced level course.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade A* - C, including grade B or above in History and English Language. In addition, a GCSE at grade B in English Literature is also preferred.

What can I go on to?

Possible career progression: Lawyer, Teacher, Journalist, Social Worker, Politician.

Students would also be able to continue with History or other Humanities courses at undergraduate level at universities throughout the country.

MATHEMATICS A LEVELAbout the course

Year 1 AS Mathematics All pupils will study two Pure Mathematics modules; Core 1 and Core 2. Topics include differential calculus, geometry, proof and logic. They will also study one Applied Mathematics module; Statistics 1. This covers the work done in GCSE Statistics and extends to probability distributions, sampling and representing data.

Year 2 A2 Mathematics All pupils study a further two Pure Mathematics modules: Core 3 and Core 4 which extends the work done at AS level. There is also an additional Applied module, Mechanics 1. This unit allows pupils to study kinematics, modeling, Newtonian Laws as well as vectors and projectiles.

How will I Iearn?

The course is assessed through external examination with no coursework or controlled assessment elements. Examinations take place in January and June of both years of the course.

What can I go on to?

A Level Maths is a prerequisite for many university courses, particularly those with a Science or Engineering focus.

It is a highly desirable A Level and can open many career opportunities and allow you to progress onto a wide variety of subjects.

PHYSICS A LEVEL About the course

This is a two year course for those students who have a desire to learn more about how the universe works. This course provides a smooth transition from GCSE to Advanced Physics. You will develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles of Physics, gain hands-on practical skills and data analysis skills and understand the relevance of Physics beyond the laboratory. Some students may wish to follow a Physics course for only one year as an AS GCE, in order to broaden their curriculum. Others will continue their course to Advanced GCE.

This a two year course provides a range of transferable skills and develops your ability to apply knowledge to new problems. You will develop the skills of investigation, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, communication and debate. The specification will build on the units of work you have studied at GCSE and will provide you with necessary understanding and awareness to continue with Religious Studies courses at degree level.

What can I go on to?

The skills that you will learn in Religious Studies will be useful to you in any number of careers including teaching, youth work, journalism, civil service and government.

If you are thinking of a career in Law or Medicine then a Religious Studies A level is looked upon favorably for undergraduate courses too.

SOCIOLOGY A LEVELAbout the course

Sociologists study people in society. The subject matter of sociology includes groups like the family, larger ones like a school or working place, very large institutions like the whole education system or the political system, and even whole societies like England or the United Kingdom. Sociology is the attempt to understand how society works. It provides description and analysis of the patterns and structures in human relationships, and it encourages us to see the world through the eyes of others. It can help us as we try to make sense of our own lives, as well as giving us a sense of our wider responsibility to society.

5 GCSEs at Grade A* - C, including a grade B or above in English and Maths.

How will I Iearn?

Varied learning styles are used that include small group activities and discussions. Visual materials are used such as DVD video and power point presentation.

AS outline At this level, candidates will acquire knowledge of contemporary social processes and social changes. Candidates will be encouraged to develop their own social awareness through active engagement with the contemporary social world.

A2 outline At this level, candidates will continue to focus on contemporary society but they should demonstrate a wider range and greater depth of knowledge and understanding and more highly developed skills of application, analysis, interpretation and evaluation.

BUSINESS STUDIES BTEC About the course

This is a 2 year course covering the key knowledge and practical skills required in the appropriate vocational sector. The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma offers flexibility and a choice of emphasis through the optional units. The course will provide students with good knowledge, understanding and skills necessary so they can continue their study in the same, or related vocational area in Higher Education within universities or other institutions, or enter a specialist area of employment

5 GCSEs at Grade A* - C, including English and Maths, a pass grade or above in BTEC Business at Level 2 is desirable.

What will I Iearn?

The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business consists of four mandatory units plus optional units.

Mandatory units

• Unit 1 – The Business Environment• Unit 2 – Business Resources• Unit 3 – Introduction to Marketing• Unit 4- Business Communication The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is broadly equivalent to three GCE A Levels.

How will I learn?

The assessment approach of the BTEC Nationals in Business allows learners to receive feedback on their progress throughout the course as they provide evidence towards the assessment and grading criteria. Evidence for assessment may be generated through a range of diverse activities including assignment and project work, case studies, workplace assessment, role play and oral presentation.

What can I go on to?

BTEC National Diplomas are valued by employers and lead careers opportunities in business specialisms such as finance, human resources, management, marketing as well as other business related careers.

You can also progress into Higher Education. This course is highly valued by business schools and universities.

CHILDREN’S CARE, LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT BTEC About the course

This course provides opportunities for learners to gain a nationally-recognised vocational qualification relevant to the CCLD sector and progression to higher-level vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Early Years/Children’s Care, Learning and Development. In order to fulfil the requirements of the Diploma, learners need to complete a total of at least 300 work placement hours which will enable learners to gain more experience and insight into the sector.

4 GCSEs at grade D or above, including English.

What will I learn?

Five mandatory units• Unit 1: Understanding Children’s Development• Unit 2: Keeping Children Safe• Unit 3: Communication with Children and Adults• Unit 4: Preparing and Maintaining Environments for Child Care• Unit 5: Professional Development, Roles and Responsibilities in Child CarePlus 1 optional unit

How will I learn?

This is a practical work-related course. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. Learning will be in the form of group work, independent research, seminars, placements totalling 300 hours in childcare settings, guest speakers, case studies, discussion and project work. All units are internally assessed and graded by teachers with an external verifier visiting the centre every year.

All students working with children will need to have an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Check; this may affect your application. Please discuss this with your interviewing tutor.

What can I go on to?

Learners who successfully complete the Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development should be able to progress to employment in the sector, in a supervised role or apprenticeship.

Progression could also be to further study, such as the BTEC Nationals in Children’s Care, Learning and Development or the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC in Health and Social Care.

CHILDREN’S CARE, LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT BTEC About the course

The BTEC Nationals in Children’s Care, Learning and Development is a two year course that has been developed to focus on education and training for children’s care, learning and development whilst providing opportunities to achieve a nationally recognised Level 3 vocationally specific qualification and giving learners the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised vocationally qualification to enter employment in the childcare sector. It also gives learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade A* - C, English is desirable.

What will I learn?

Seven mandatory units• Unit 1: Positive Relationships for Children’s Care, Learning and Development• Unit 2: Positive Environments for Children’s Care, Learning and Development• Unit 3: Promoting Children’s Development• Unit 4: Reflecting on and Developing Practice for Children aged 0-7• Unit 5: Safeguarding Children• Unit 6: Promoting Children’s Rights• Unit 7: Children’s Learning Activities and Play

Plus specialist units (dependent on unit specialism of teacher) that provide for a combined total of 1080 guided learning hours (GLH) for the completed qualification.Some examples of topic areas are Diet and Nutrition for Children, Managing an Early Years or Play Work Environment, Modern Beliefs and Religions for the Early Years Practitioner and Complementary Therapies for Children.The common skills which will be developed throughout the course are as follows: communicate effectively, in a variety of situations, using a wide range of techniques, work well with others - individuals or teams - so that work can be properly planned and targets met, manage their own development, so that they are always ready to take on the challenges of change and diversification, use number, not just within routine tasks and functions but to help them be more effective and efficient in all they do, use ICT in a range of applications to support all aspects of their role and solve problems in a variety of circumstances.

What can I go on to?

Learners who successfully complete the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development should be able to progress to employment in the sector, in an unsupervised role. Progression could also be to Higher Education vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel Level 5 BTEC Higher National in Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families, or a Foundation Degree.

Level 3 Diploma

How will I learn?

This is a practical work-related course where you will have to undertake 800 hours in a childcare setting covering different age ranges. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. Learning will be in the form of group work, independent research, seminars, placements in childcare settings, guest speakers, case studies, discussion and project work. All units are internally assessed and graded by teachers with an external verifier visiting the centre every year. Successful completion of this course (Pass, Merit or Distinction) equate to three grades at A level (C, B or A)

CONSTRUCTION CITY & GUILDS About the course

This is a one year course ideal if you’re new to construction and want a grounding in the industry, or you’re already working in a basic construction job and want to expand your knowledge.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D or above.

What will I Iearn?

You complete five core units: • Core construction skills principles • Basic construction skills principles • Core construction skills practice • Construction technician principles 1 • Construction technician practice 1

You also choose one optional unit from a range, including:

• Timber vocations basic skills practice • Plumbing basic skills practice • Electrical installation basic skills practice

How will I learn?

The teaching methods are practical demonstrations, students then practice the skills before completing a portfolio of work to cover the elements required for each unit. There is also theory work to be completed in a classroom environment and an end of phase test to carry out. The Technician Certificate in Construction learners are assessed by practical demonstrations or assignments, and a multiple choice exam. Successful completion of all components of the course will be needed.

What can I go on to?

Learners who successfully complete this course should be able to progress to employment in the sector. Progression could also be to further study, such as Diploma Awards in The Construction Industry or Technician Diploma Award in Construction.

A number of UK universities and other Higher Education institutions may accept success in this programme combined with the Technician Diploma and Advanced Technician Diploma Awards towards evidence for direct entry onto higher-level programmes.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY BTEC About the course

This is a full-time two year course in which students will learn how hardware and software is used to provide IT services. Some learners may wish to gain the qualification in order to enter a specialist area of employment or to progress to a Higher Education foundation degree, HND or other professional development programme.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade A* - C including English and Maths, a Pass or higher grade in BTEC First Diploma IT or similar Level 2 qualification is desirable.

What will I Iearn?

The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT is a 180-credit qualification that consists of 3 mandatory units plus fifteen optional units. It is broadly equivalent to three GCE A levels.

Mandatory units

• 1 Communication and Employability Skills for IT• 2 Computer Systems• 3 Information Systems

How will I learn?

The assessment approach of the BTEC Nationals in IT allows learners to receive feedback on their progress throughout the course as they provide evidence towards the assessment and grading criteria. Students work individually and in small groups. Students learn how IT is used in industry, commerce and service industries and investigate the importance of IT in everyday life.

This course offers you the unique opportunity to further your studies at Higher Education level or enter a specialist area of employment.

The BTEC First in Health and Social Care is a two year course and has been developed in the health and social care sector to provide education and training for health and social care employees and to give learners the opportunity to achieve a nationally recognised Level 2 vocationally-specific qualification and the opportunity for learners to enter employment in the health and social care sector. This course also gives the opportunity for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

4 GCSEs at grade A* - D, English is desirable.

What will I Iearn?

Eight mandatory units• Unit 1: Communication in Health and Social Care• Unit 2: Individual Rights in Health and Social Care• Unit 3: Individual Needs in Health and Social Care• Unit 4: Ensuring Safe Environments in Health and Social Care• Unit 6: Cultural Diversity in Health and Social Care• Unit 7: Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care• Unit 8: Human Lifespan Development• Unit 9: Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health and Social Care

The common skills which will be developed throughout the course are as follows: becoming independent enquirers, creative thinkers, reflective learners, team workers, self-managers and effective participators.

How will I learn?

This is a practical work-related course. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. Learning will be in the form of group work, independent research, seminars, guest speakers, case studies, discussion and project work. All units are internally assessed and graded by teachers. Successful completion of this course (Pass, Merit or Distinction) equate to four grades at GCSE level (C, B or A)

What can I go on to?

Learners may progress to vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel BTEC Nationals in Health and Social Care or other equivalent courses.

The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care consists of eight mandatory units plus optional units.

• Unit 1: Developing Effective Communication in Health and Social Care• Unit 2: Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care• Unit 3: Health, Safety and Security in Health and Social Care• Unit 4: Development through the Life Stages• Unit 5: Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care• Unit 6: Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care• Unit 7: Sociological Perspectives for Health and Social Care• Unit 8: Psychological Perspectives for Health and Social Care

How will I learn?

BTEC National Diplomas are valued by employers and lead to career opportunities in Health and Social Care specialisms such as Social Care, Nursing and Health Care as well as other related careers.
