Introduction

Welcome to Uplands Community College.

I am delighted that you are considering Uplands for your education after your GCSEs. In summer 2015 we celebrated our students’ best A Level results in the college’s history. There was an overall pass rate of 99.5 % with 80% of students achieving grade A*-C at A Level. This is a great time to choose our sixth form.

Our aim is to provide you with high quality teaching whilst preparing you for the next stage in your education or future employment. We want every sixth form student to leave Uplands having achieved their full potential and embarking on their chosen course or career path.

We are extremely proud that sixth form students from Uplands have been successful in gaining places at highly prestigious universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Durham, Warwick, Edinburgh, Kings College London as well as Arts Colleges and a number of other Russell Group universities. Students have gone on to study subjects as diverse as Law, Spanish, Business, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Illustration, Architecture, Sport Science and Equestrian Psychology.

In addition to your chosen courses, it is important that we help develop other skills and talents as these are highly valued by universities and employers. We hope that you will make use of our excellent sporting facilities and also undertake some community service or charitable work that will enrich your application to Higher Education or employment.

The ‘Course Information’ booklet which accompanies this prospectus, gives you additional information to help you make your subject choices, and we hope you will attend our Open Evening on Thursday 22nd October, when subject teachers will outline in greater depth the course requirements.

I look forward to meeting you.

Ms Alison Thomas Head of Sixth Form

Curriculum

Your academic results are a key priority to us and to help ensure your success, we request that in addition to five ‘C’ grades at GCSE, students wishing to embark on traditional A Level courses, such as science, mathematics and English, must achieve a minimum of a ‘B’ grade in their chosen subject or related subject/s.

We are able to offer a range of vocational A Levels to enable students with mainly ‘C’ grades at GCSE to follow a course of study that will enable them to be successful. The vocational A Level courses we will be offering are: Fashion, Business Studies, ICT, Law and Physical Education. Your interview for the Sixth Form will help you to establish which courses are the most appropriate for you.

We also recommend that students undertake their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) in year 13, to further enhance their qualifications and skills set upon completing their time in the sixth form.

In addition to lessons in your chosen subjects there are also independent study sessions. These are to enable you to complete your work outside of lessons in a fully resourced and staffed environment.

Care, Guidance and Support

As a sixth form student you will be assigned to a tutor who will support you during your time with us. Tutors, together with the Head of Sixth Form and Head of Year (Key Stage 5) will also monitor your progress throughout the sixth form and act as a channel of communication between the college and your parents.

Sixth form students are given ongoing advice and guidance when deciding on their further education or career paths. All students take part in a three day ‘Life after Uplands’ conference during which they participate in CV and UCAS application workshops, attend a university/careers fair, listen to speakers from various institutions and begin the process of researching their chosen path. In addition, students have the opportunity to take part in ‘mock’ interviews to help them prepare and hone their interview techniques for university or employment and are coached on presentation, body language and etiquette.

Uplands has a well-equipped library which provides up to date information about the ever changing world of Higher Education and employment and the qualifications you will need to follow your chosen path. Individual guidance interviews will be available for students and we have a careers advisor who is available on Monday and Wednesday of each week. We also have a dedicated, well equipped Sixth Form area.

Enrichment and Facilities

Your wider interests outside academia are highly valued by employers and universities and so it is desirable to participate in some form of community service or charitable work.

Sixth form students take part in ‘Uplands Support’; this is a scheme which aims to enable students to assist with the learning of others, particularly those in the lower school. Often, this will take the form of students supporting in lessons. Many students recognise volunteering can help the local community and have a positive impact on their lives.

The courses you choose to study will offer you a wide range of enrichment opportunities. Linguists will be able to take part in vocational experiences in France and Spain and those studying Geography will carry out fieldwork in a variety of locations. In the past, sixth form students have also taken part in World Challenge Expeditions and visits to far flung places such as Ecuador, Morocco, Iceland, China and to the Himalayas in summer 2015.

All students have access to the Uplands Sports Centre which includes a modern gym facility, dance studio and indoor sports halls, catering for a wide range of sporting and fitness activities. We also have extensive playing fields and will soon be building an astroturf.

Please choose one of the enrichment options when you make your application.
