They jetted out of the country yesterday to take part in A South African Autumn in Burgundy season of concerts that sees them returning in November. Their performances form part of a recipro- cal season that was held in the Western Cape last year when a French season of cultural activities was hosted here. While the group has been racking up some acclaimed performances since starting in 2008, this trip must surely rank as a major highlight for these young musicians. Renowned musician Ian Smith, has been spearheading this initiative since its begin- ning and as musical director has mentored and moulded this group into a world-class ensemble. Overseas One of those excited musicians is vocalist David October, who confessed that this was going to be his first overseas trip, but the band was ready for their travels. “Everybody has been excited about this trip ever since we heard about it,” he says. “Its even more awesome for me because I actually got into the band after filling in for somebody and Ian Smith encouraged me to stay with them. “The joy for me is when it all comes togeth- er during a performance, you’re singing, the band is blasting behind you and you look out into the audience to see the faces of people who are enjoying every minute of it. “This is how this music has empowered us, we come from the sometimes dangerous streets of Delft, but here we are making mu- sic for the rest of the world to show them the great talents that exist here. “We just need more support to grow even bigger because we believe that we are the positive role models for the youth in our community. Even our families have become changed through us as we started to enjoy the music,” he said. October also added that while they were very excited about going overseas another big wish that they have is to have a record- ing or DVD made. “Everywhere we perform the people want to know if we have a recording, and they’re disappointed when we tell them there are none. “Our wish for the future is to get that fund- ing for that project because I believe that this trip is the start of us going internation- al, and everyone wants to take us home with them after a show,” he jokes. Excited Saxophonist Celine Antonels, has been a member of the group since the beginning, and she was just as excited. “While I have been overseas as part of a smaller group, this is the first time that we will be travelling as the big band,” she says. “Music has made me realise that I am one of the luckiest people on this planet because it has given me these wonderful opportuni- ties that has inspired me to work harder at making a success of my life. “Being with this band has given me a whole new perspective in life, I have grown into a young person who is confident about BIG BREAK: WELL DESERVED Delft band to France Ian Smith, left, is giving France a taste of the great sounds of the Delft Big Band. my future, and I have great self respect for myself. “Now I am motivated to show other young people that there are positive rewards for hard-work and dedication. When people say bad things about Delft, I tell them about us and the difference that it has made in so many lives.” The love for music has taken these young- sters from the dangers of drugs, crime and gangsterism in their community to the top festival and stages of South Africa, now their message is spreading across the seas.

Vincent van Gogh said that if you hear avoicewithinyou say ‘you cannot paint,’ thenby all means paint, and that voice will be si-lenced.In Blikkiesdorp, a temporary relocation

centre near Delft, Bruce Henniker, heard adifferent voice tell him that he should pickup a brush and now his voice is heardthrough his art.Henniker (34) confessed that growing up

in Bishop Lavis there was never any signthat art would become a passion in his life.“I was a bit of a naughty boy,” he smiles.“There were times that I tried to draw but

it just was not there.“My journey in life has taken me many

places, the dark side where I was involvedin drugs, but I have put that behind me fora long time now.”Henniker added that he had been in Blik-

kiesdorp since 2008, and at first supportedhis family by repairing cell phones, but thatit was too much trouble when some of thephones that he repaired were stolen phones. Then one morning it all changed.“Iwokeuponemorningand therewas this

picture hanging in the room, somehow thelight caught it at the right angle and it justcaught my eye,” he said.“In that moment something told me that

this is what I had to do, and I went out anddid it.“I had no training so it was trial and error

at the beginning so I just kept on trying toreflect what I saw from my perspective.”From the beginning of this year things

have changed when he entered a talent com-petition that was held in the area.

“Other people were doing performanceart, but I thought I am just going to showsome of my paintings, and I got secondprize,” he said. This talent show got him noticed by Lee

Warren who is doing some social projects inthe area and she started a campaign on so-cial networks to get his work noticed. Now the internet is playing a big part in

furthering his ambition with support froman artist, Samantha Ornellas in London.“I have been blessed with the motivation

from Samantha,” he said.“She is constantlyhelpingmeandopening

my eyes to what I am capable of. Anotherperson saw my Facebook page and donatedR1 000 to help me with materials.

“When people comment on my work, itmakes me realise that this is what I was puton earth for. Somehow what I do touchespeople in some special way, and now I amgoing to take it further.“So far I have sold four paintings, so I am

encouraged to keep at it, but in my mindthere are plans to seek out the other talentshere, and show them that there can be em-powerment through art.“Wemust stop seeing our selves as victims

here in Blikkiesdorp, we must be part of thesolution to make this a positive place inwhich ever way we can.”V For more information about the paintings emailLee Warren at [email protected] or call heron 076 041 4974.

There are only three weeks left forlearners to enter Collect-a-Can’s popu-lar CAN Craze Competition. A shareof R60 000 is up for grabs to entries re-ceived before 30 September.Who would have thought that a pile

of used cans could win you a share ofR60 000 cash?Collect-a-Can’s CANCraze Competi-

tion challenges learners to build inno-vative structures from 300 or moreused cans.“The structures can take any form,

but creativity is crucial so we wouldlike to encourage the learners to thinkoutside the can,” recommends ZimasaVelaphi of Collect-a-Can.The cans used in the building of

these structures need to be collectedby the learners; after which they willbe recovered by Collect-a-Can andprocessed for recycling. This process demonstrates the envi-

ronmental benefits of collecting cansand shows schools and learners thatrecycling can be fun, while encourag-ing learners to be more eco-conscious.Photos of the completed structures

need to be submitted to Collect-a-Canalong with a completed entry form, which can be obtained from Collect-a-Can branches or from www.collecta-can.co.za.The three most creative structures,

Some sporting stars at St Andrews HighSchool in Elsies River are making theirschool proud.Running to reach greater heights were

Lorenzo Olyn and Michaela Geduld whowith dedication and perseverance, havebeen taking part in cross-country runningas a school sport. This dedication has paid off with them

working their way up to achieve WesternProvince colours that saw them taking partin the national championships that tookplace in Potchefstroom over the weekend. While their coach, Mercia Farmer, a

teacher at the school, is a bit disappointedthat they did not make the national team, she feels their story of representing theirprovince will inspire many more learnersat the school.“It was touch and go whether they would

make the tour,” she added.“Moneywas tight and it seemedwewould

not be able to send them, but I knew that Iwould have to go that extra mile to helpthem.“They had worked too hard to see their

dream disappear.”Farmer then took to the social platform

of Facebook to make an appeal for help, andthen the club that she runs for, Plexus Dur-banville, stepped in and showed their sup-port.“I must really thank the club and some of

the individual members whomade a contri-bution to cover most of their travel and ac-commodation costs,” she said.“This bodes well for the future because I

want to get more learners involved in thesport. It’s not just about the running butabout the interaction with others outside ofthe community who are sharing the samepassion for the sport as they do.”

Although Lorenzo and Michaela did notmake the national team following thePotch-efstroom competition, they both agree thatthe challenge was an experience of a life-

time and they enjoyed it immensely. The netball team at the school were also

top achievers winning Gold in the thirdleague of the WP under-14 competition.

Excelsior in De La Haye, Bellville het ’nverskeidenheid bome – uitheemse bloe-kombome, kurkeike, Australiese swart-hout, asook enkele inheemse wit kareebo-me.

Suid-Afrika is ’n boom-arm land.

Is it a mole? Is it a drill? No, it’s Hypother-mic Man!A homeless person found the perfect hid-

ing spot after an “altercation” with some-one on Friday afternoon.Unfortunately he didn’t take all the fac-

tors, such as his size, into consideration.More than 12 hours later, the hypother-

mic man was dug out from under an ablu-tion facility in Bloubergstrand.Venessa Jackson, spokesperson of ER24,

elaborates: “At around 04:00 on SaturdaymorningMilnerton crews receiveda call forassistancewhereamanwas stuck ina smallhole under the public ablution facility offMarine Drive.”All the emergency personnel could see

when they arrived on the scene were a pairof feet sticking out fromunder the building.

The feet apparently belonged to a 29-year-old homeless person.“The person responded to the paramed-

ics’ calls so they started digging away at thecold, wet beach sand. Spades had to bebrought to the scene,” continues Jackson. The man were treated for “hypothermic

symptoms” due to the cold and was trans-ported to New Somerset Hospital. Despitebeing stuck between a rock (well... sand)and a hard place for hours, the man was ina stable conditionwhenhewas handed overto hospital staff.Jackson says the man told paramedics

that he had to run away from someone andhide in a safe place. The small hole under the building seemed

sufficient, but as soon as he managed towriggle himself in the “wriggle back out”became problematic.“His hands were probably stuck as well,

so he couldn’t dig himself out.”

The JAG Foundation wants some healthyhearts in Bonteheuwel.Last week Diacoustic Medical Devices

and the JAG Foundation were at NerinaPrimary School to screen hearts for HeartAwareness month. Some 115 children who form part of the

JAGFoundationMightyMeter Programmewere screened to help detect possible heartdefects and were made aware of hearthealth.“Early heartmurmur detection is vital in

these children’s lives,” said Dr Liesl Zuhl-ke, president of thePaediatricCardiac Soci-ety of South Africa, who participated in thescreening process and diagnosed one of thechildrenwith a serious case of Atrial Septaldefect (ASD).“The life expectancy is about 40 years for

this patient if not treated within a timelymanner.“Children who are born with an ASD

have ahole in their heart, allowing less oxy-gen in the blood that goes to the body andare sometimes only discovered much laterin life, which can become very problematicas the opening becomes larger.”Situations such as these and many more

are why the JAG Foundation and Diacous-

tic Medical Devices partnered to screen thehearts of children in various areas.During the last six months Dr Nuraan

Mammon, a general practitioner atCavend-ishMedical Centre, alongwithDiacoustic’smedical software device SensiCardiac havescreened over 400 children that are a partof the JAG Foundation, including theirJAG rugby members.Mammon screened the hearts of the chil-

dren, and once she suspected a heart mur-mur the child was screened by SensiCardi-ac, a heart murmur detection device thatworks in conjunction with an electronicstethoscope in order not to refer any unnec-essary patients to the cardiologist.Last week nine children were referred to

Dr Zühlke, where she and her teamwere ac-tive in the mobile clinic and of those somewill be sent for further screening and exam-ination accompanied by their parents atRed Cross Hospital.Zuhlke also took to the stage and spoke

to the children on having a healthy heart, the importance of exercising, eatinghealthy foods and drinking a lot of water. She raised the importance of not getting

into thehabit of badaddictions suchas alco-hol.

These learners from Nerina Primary School are happy that they took part in the heart awareness programme at their school.

Re: “All the protection obscuresthe beauty”, TygerBurger, 11September: Having lived in LaRochelle for 20 years, yes therehave been changes. It is verycostly to water an expanse oflawn these days. As a ratepay-ing citizen I am also expectedto foot the bill for watering andtending the council verges.Maybe Mr Traut would like tosubsidise my water bill.La Rochelle is a beautiful

suburb which used to bepeaceful, but no longer where Iam situated. I am surroundedby dogs that bark every day, sometimes for hours on end,the continual smell of excre-ment in the air because dogowners cannot be bothered toclean up their yards, childrenthat scream continuously, people sawing and grinding...As for the social problems, I

think that it is the responsibili-ty of government to sort it out.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Our culturaldiversity alsoour strengthHeritage day (24 September), also knownas National Braai Day as the result of apointed 2005 media campaign, was notoriginally intended to be an official SouthAfrican public holiday. But, when the Inkatha Freedom Party

with its large Zulu membership, refusedto sign the Public Holiday’s Bill becauseit omitted the inclusion of Shaka Day, aconcession was made. Each year Zulukings and warriors gather at KingShaka’s grave in Stanger and honour himon this day.King Shaka was the legendary Zulu

king who played an important role inuniting disparate Zulu clans into acohesive nation. It’s probably in thisspirit that Heritage Day should becelebrated.Shaka will also be remembered as a

heartless warrior, changing the tools andstyle of Zulu warfare to be effective inclose contact, relentlessly and evenbrutally training his soldiers, and confus-ing his enemies with brilliant warstrategies, thus gaining respect – and fear– of all nations, including the British andEuropean settlers of the time. But it’s his brilliant ability to unite

nations without shedding a drop of blood, that should also be celebrated.South Africans across the spectrum are

therefore encouraged to celebrate theirculture and the diversity of their beliefsand traditions on this day and to becommitted and proud of the group youbelong to, but also to embrace others’heritage – and learn from it.

Kom jy daar dan is daar niks voorraadnie. Baie mense ken nie hulle regte nie. -Anoniem
