BAFFERT SENDS PAIR FOR JEROME Trainer Bob Baffert, who shipped in During (CherokeeRun) and Teton Forest (Forestry) to win back-to-backrenewals of the GII Jerome H. when it was contested inthe fall at Belmont Park in 2003 and 2004, has two live

chances in today=s one-mile test over theAqueduct main track.Stirred Up (Lemon DropKid) is favored at 2B1 onEric Donovan=s morningline. Favored when adistant third behindstablemate and J “TDNRising Star” JBodemeister (EmpireMaker) going a mile for

the first time at Santa Anita Feb. 11, he held off a laterun from Holy Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}) to graduateMar. 13 at the Arcadia oval. The $420,000 KEESEPpurchase gave a solid account of himself in his stakesdebut last time out, finishing a clear third behind DaddyNose Best (Scat Daddy) in the GIII Sunland Derby Mar. 25. Baffert=s second string is Brigand (Flatter), the$925,000 topper out of the 2011 OBS March sale whohas been something of a disappointment for ownerKaleem Shah and remains eligible for a first-levelallowance. The Lumber Guy (Grand Slam) cuts back tothe one-turn mile off a pacesetting fifth in the GI WoodMemorial S. Apr. 7 and should be gunning for it fromthe inside post, but will have plenty of company upfront. AIt=s back quicker than I=d like, but I=m anxious torun him in a one-turn mile,@ trainer Michael Hushionsaid. AI think that=s the key, a one-turn mile. A rider canjust come out there real quietly, wherever he wants totake him, and make them sort it out for a half miledown the backside.@

While Aidan O’Brien didn’t nominate his next target he clearly likes this son

of Dylan Thomas and said a Guineas followed by the French Derby was in his mind

for the colt

❝❞ RACING POST, 16/04/12

FURNER’S GREEN (PICTURED) won the Leopardstown2,000 Guineas Trial Stakes-Gr.3 last Sunday.

On the same card two other sons,TOWER ROCK and ATHENS, finished third and

fourth in the Ballysax Stakes-Gr.3 ahead ofBeresford Stakes-Gr.2 winner David Livingston.

“it mustn’t be forgotten that Dylan Thomas’s Timeform rating went from 102 as a two-year-old to 129at three and then 132 at four when he was Europe’s champion older horse….the fact that his progenyhave been given 18 French Classic entries suggests there may be plenty of improvement to come.”

A GRIMM TALE Britain=s nasty weather and the prevalent soft groundat Newbury has already put paid to the chance of seeingTop Offer (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and Tales of Grimm(Distorted Humor) in today=s G3 Greenham S., but onewho is not be dodging the testing footing is MichaelPescod=s Bronterre (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Successfulon good-to-soft in the Listed Stardom S. in September,he was a place ahead of Thursday=s impressive G3 Craven S. winner Trumpet Major (Ire) (Arakan) whenfourth in a renewal of Newmarket=s G1 Dewhurst S.that is working out well when last seen in October.ABronterre looked to love the rain-softened ground whenhe won by five lengths at Goodwood last September, sohe should be in his element in the conditions,@commented Richard Hannon, who has won three of thelast five renewals. AHe was only beaten a length in theDewhurst, finishing just behind Trumpet Major, who didthe form no harm in the Craven, so we have to behopeful. Bronterre worked well with Trumpet Majorwhen they went to Newbury for an away day recentlyand he seems in very good form.@ Caspar Netscher (GB)(Dutch Art {GB}) has already proven his liking for thistrack when successful in the G2 Mill Reef S. over sixfurlongs in September, but has stamina to prove after alast-out eighth in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turfover a mile at Churchill Downs. Andrew Balding putsforward Thurloe Thoroughbreds= Spiritual Star (GB)(Soviet Star), who tempted connections into asupplementary entry for the Dewhurst with a six-lengthsuccess in a seven-furlong maiden at Newmarket inSeptember. Despite coming up short on the bigoccasion when seventh, he was only beaten just overfour lengths, and that race=s also-rans Trumpet Major,Red Duke (Hard Spun) and Ektihaam (Ire) (InvincibleSpirit {Ire}) have all boosted the form this year. AI=mvery happy with him and I think he=s improved a lotsince last year--he=s a fine-looking, strong 3-year-oldtype,@ Balding said yesterday. AHe=s a high-quality horseat home and the question mark is the ground, but it=sthe same for all of them, and if he goes on it he=ll govery well. He was too free in the Dewhurst andprobably, in hindsight, it came too soon after his maidenwin. He has a very bright future, and this might not bethe best guide, as it will be run on soft ground, but Ihope he handles it.@

UNFAVORABLE TERMS? Robert Barnett=s Best Terms (GB) (Exceed and Excel{Aus}) is not a certain starter for today=s G3 FredDarling S. at Newbury, with the soft ground causingconnections some anxiety. Having coped withgood-to-soft when winning the G2 Lowther S. at York inAugust, the diminutive homebred is not built for deepconditions, especially as this trip is an unknown. AWillEdmeades, racing manager to the Barnetts who ownBest Terms, has always been for going straight for theGuineas, so if we are not happy with the ground we willwait for Newmarket," trainer Richard Hannon said of thehomebred, who was a latest fifth in the G1 CheveleyPark S. at Newmarket in September. ABest Terms hasnot grown since last year, but she has been workingvery well up at Everleigh and she is fit enough. We thinkthat she will stay the seven [furlongs] and she switchesoff at home, which is encouraging, but we won=t knowabout the mile until we get to Newmarket.@ MickChannon has done well with his 3-year-old fillies so farthis term and Fillionaire (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) is held inhigh regard at West Ilsley. Top Offer Misses Greenham... J “TDN Rising Star” J Top Offer (GB) (Dansili{GB}) was yesterday ruled out of the G3 Greenham S.by trainer Roger Charlton due to softening conditions atNewbury. Khalid Abdullah=s homebred will head straightto the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket May 5without a prep run. AI=ve decided not to run, because it=stoo close to the Guineas to have what could be a verytough race,@ his conditioner said. ABy tomorrow, theground could be holding and there is a very strongheadwind so I would rather give him a preparationaccording to what I think he needs. I=ll bring him heretomorrow to walk him around the paddock and thenwe=ll work him at home and if his work is good and theowner is happy, I=d like to run in the 2000 Guineas. Heneeds a couple of pieces of work and then he=ll bethere. He=s a nice, good-looking horse who moves welland would be inconvenienced by soft ground. He=s gotto lift his game to run well in a Guineas, but I think he=sa definite group horse.@

Fencing Confirmed for Guineas Test... Trainer John Gosden yesterday announced thatFencing (Street Cry {Ire}) will run in the 2000 Guineasat Newmarket. Due to prep in today=s G3 Greenham S.at Newbury, George Strawbridge=s G1 Racing PostTrophy third-place finisher suffered a late setback andwill head straight to the May 5 Newmarket Classic. AHedid a very nice piece of work, but a shoe came back andthe clip went into his foot,@ his conditioner told PASport. AHe=s fit, but you can=t run him and I didn=tdeclare him for the Greenham. He=ll be back and can gostraight for the Guineas, as there=s nothing else leftafter the Greenham.@

Igugu to Enter Quarantine for Dubai... Trainer Mike de Kock revealed yesterday that reigningSouth African Horse of the Year Igugu (Aus) (Galileo{Ire}) will be among those entering quarantine May 6 inorder to compete in next year=s Dubai Carnival. Due toprotocol designed to control African Horse Sickness,Igugu, along with recent Sheikh Hamdan acquisition TheApache (SAf) (Mogok) and a number of other de Kockrunners, will spend 19 days at the KenilworthQuarantine Station, then 90 days in Mauritius andanother month in the U.K. The Apache, a multiple Group1 winner last year, will be sent to Hong Kong, ratherthan Dubai like the rest of his stablemates. AFor Iguguand others to be able to compete internationally at theend of the year and next year in Dubai we have nochoice but to make early arrangements to get them outof the country as soon as we can, which is about now,@de Kock explained. On Lasix, practice what you preach“If they really believe that furosemide is bad for horses and racing, whydon’t they just stop racing their horses on it? By failing to do so, the smallbut vocal group of owners and breeders who are crusading against theuse of furosemide come off as being opportunistic at best andhypocritical at worst.” Steve Crist, Daily Racing Form

A Filly’s Unlikely Journey From a Rescue Project to the Racetrack“But what the horseplayers will not know is that Notinrwildestdremz is afeisty little thing with attitude and that she has overcome long odds just tobe alive. Time to ban horse racing?“Having banned fox-hunting, bear-baiting and cock-fighting, we like tothink ourselves morally superior to our crueler ancestors who used torevel in these practices. However, the Grand National is little different tosuch barbarities.” Debra Widdicombe, thesouthafrican.com

HUGHES APPEAL DISMISSED Richard Hughes yesterday learned that his appealagainst the decision of the British Horseracing Authorityto uphold a lengthy ban handed out in India has failed.Despite attempts to lessen the 50-day suspensionhanded out in February for not following the instructionsof the trainer of one of his mounts, the high-profile riderwill have to wait until Apr. 29 to resume duties. JamieStier, Director of Raceday Operations and Regulation forthe BHA, said in a statement, AThe BHA stands behindthe principle of reciprocity of penalties amongrecognised international racing bodies. Withoutreciprocity there is a risk of there being no effectivemeasures to deter visiting participants from breachingthe rules of the respective authority. However, we willbe looking to see if there are any lessons to learn whichmay assist the handling of such matters in the future.@

BRUNETTI CHALLENGE TO MONMOUTHLEASE DISMISSED A complaint filed by JohnBrunetti, owner of Hialeah Park, seeking to re-open thebidding process on the lease to operate New Jersey=sMonmouth Park has been dismissed. The Board ofCommissioners of the New Jersey Sports andExposition Authority received a 37-page documentThursday afternoon from its hearing officer MarkStefanacci saying that Brunetti=s challenge was withoutmerit, upholding the decision to give control of the trackto the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen=sAssociation. The organization was granted the right tolease Monmouth Mar. 1, but soon afterwards, Brunetti, who operates Red Oak Stable with a string atMonmouth, challenged the decision, suggesting that theterms of that lease were dramatically different thanthose he had been offered in an initial request forproposals. On Monday, Brunetti also argued before theboard that political contributions made by the NJTHA, anot-for-profit organization, precluded them from beingawarded the lease under the state of New Jersey=s pay-to-play restrictions. The NJTHA argued that, as a not-for-profit, is was not bound by the same rules as abusiness entity. Brunetti also acknowledged campaigncontributions of his own. The NJSEA board met behindclosed doors Thursday and accepted Stefanacci=srecommendations at that time, but did not disclose theiraction until New Jersey Governor Chris Christie gave hisapproval. The governor signed off on the minutes Fridayafternoon. Through his attorneys, Brunetti indicated thathe might appeal the decision if the agreement was notoverturned, but it was not clear Friday what other legalremedies he might seek, if any. Monmouth Park isscheduled to a 71-day meeting Saturday, May 12.
