That race came at seven panels, however, and a half-furlong cut-back and a return to Belmont--where LaVerdad is three-for-three--could do the trick."Obviously, she's run much better at Belmont than shedid at Saratoga," Rice noted. "I think in the [HonorableMiss] she was compromised by the mud and postposition [one]. In the [Ballerina], I don't think sevenfurlongs is her best distance. I think she prefersBelmont, and that could be enough to turn the resultsaround." Chester and Mary Broman=s Artemis Agrotera, winner of last year=s GI Frizette S. here as a juvenile, bounced back from a pair of lackluster efforts to crushstate-bred optional claimers by 10 1/4 lengths upstateJuly 23. THE CHENES GANG France=s elite juveniles are beginning to build towardstheir all-important autumn targets, with today=s G3 Prixdes Chenes at Longchamp the first pointer for the G1 Criterium International, and as usual, it is to AndreFabre that all refer as the record-holding trainer looksfor an eighth edition. Of his pair, RashitShaykhutdinov=s De Treville (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB})has yet to disappoint, and the 850,000gns son of thehigh-class Dar Re Mi (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) will remainexciting until his fortunes dip. With just a seven-furlongmaiden win to his name at Chantilly July 17, he has alot to prove but has the pedigree to hit the heights andis in the right hands to be guided in that direction.Interestingly, the rival that De Treville had back insecond last time was beaten out of sight byJean-Claude Seroul=s Evasive=s First (Fr) (Evasive {GB})in the Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux des Jouvencellesover seven furlongs at Vichy Aug. 2, and he sets amarginal standard. Guy Pariente=s July 13 Listed PrixRoland de Chambure winner Kenfreeze (Fr) (Kendargent{Fr}) represents the form of this track=s G3 Prix laRochette, having been fifth behind Full Mast (MizzenMast) in that Sept. 7 highlight, while His Highness TheAga Khan=s Cherek (Fr) (Paco Boy {Ire}) is open toimprovement after his Deauville maiden score Aug. 30.

Third in the G2 Prix Eugene Adam over this track andtrip in July 2012, Fractional went on to success in theListed Prix de Tourgeville and G3 Prix Quincey over amile at Deauville the following month before headingfor the shelf. On a roll coming into this on the back ofmile conditions scores at Lyon-Parilly June 14 and atLongchamp at the start of this month, the bay signaledhis return to better company with a game win movingback up to this distance for the first time since hissophomore days. Settled towards the back of mid-division early by Maxime Guyon, he needed to berousted along as the contest entered the final quartermile but responded to grab the advantage with 100meters remaining and outstay the G1 Singapore AirlinesInternational Cup runner-up and GI Arlington Millionsixth Smoking Sun. AWe felt beforehand that he wasback to his best and he proved it today,@ Godolphin=sLisa-Jane Graffard commented. AThe race went verywell for him--he was very relaxed throughout andquickened nicely. Today was his main target and wehave no plans for him at the moment.@

Stretching out and trying two turns for connections who have known plenty of success with this sire, the homebred was the 9-2 fourth choice and settled towards the back of the pack behind a good pace for the opening three-quarters of a mile. He followed the move of favored Golden Gint (Medaglia d=Oro) around the second turn and switched outside of that one at the quarter pole, but was six or seven deep into the stretch. He kept to his task and was gaining on the leaders late when Luis Garcia was forced to take evasive action due to some bumping to his inside. Set to Music looked ticketed for a minor award, but dug in gamely and nabbed Golden Gint by a head on the line. Racing in the colors of her breeder Mike Pegram, Pussycat Doll followed in the hoofprints of her dam, Hookedonthefeelin (Citidancer), by winning the GI La Brea S. at the end of her 3-year-old season. MIKE MAYO (1954-2014)by Keith Chamblin, NTRA Mike Mayo, a handicapping tournament mainstay andthe longtime Chairman of the NHC Players= Committee, passed away Thursday, September 18 after a briefillness. Mike and his wife, Marsha, were familiar facesat racetracks and handicapping tournaments around thecountry, including at the NHC, where he was a 10-timequalifier. Beyond the pari-mutuel windows and out of sightfrom most tournament players, Mike had a lasting andprofound impact onthe development andgrowth of the NHC,handicappingtournament play andThoroughbred horseracing in general. As Chairman of theNHC Players=Committee, Mike wasa tireless advocate for the horseplayer and a staunchbeliever that the NHC could help grow the popularity ofhorse racing. The Players= Committee serves as a voicefor all NHC tournament players and assists the NTRAwith the establishment of NHC rules, formats andprocedures. Under Mike=s steady hand, the committeehelped set the stage for the 2008 launch of the NHCTour, which connects tournaments through a pointssystem and prize money. The Tour has helped fuelrecord participation in NHC tournaments and recordpurses at the NHC, which began in 2000 with a purseof $192,000 and this January will offer a purse of wellover $2 million. Mike was a longtime proponent of a AFinal Table@format for the NHC. His vision become reality earlierthis year when the NHC instituted a @Final 50@ andAFinal Table.@ By all accounts, the result was the mostexciting NHC in the event=s 15-year history. Severalyears ago, Mike sent a letter to the NTRA formallyrequesting that the organization appoint a horseplayerto its Board of Directors. Mike felt strongly thathorseplayers, whose wagering dollars fuel every aspectof the industry, deserved a seat and voice at the table. In August, Judy Wagner became the first horseplayerelected to serve on the 13-member NTRA Board. Funeral arrangements for Mike are still pending, however, Mike did make it clear that he was not a bigfan of flowers. He asked that horseplayers and friendsconsider a contribution to Old Friends retirement farm,to go toward the care of the beautiful animals thatbrought him so much pleasure. RICARDO VS BASE: MUCH MORE THAN ACHAMPIONS CHALLENGEBy Diego Mitagstein Jorge Ricardo vs. Russell Baze--the two winningestjockeys of all time were to finally meet. It was Thursday, at Cristal, Porto Alegre, the thirdracetrack in hierarchy of Brazil, where the Jockey Clubof Rio Grande do Sul prompted one of the most

transcendental eventsof the season. JorgeRicardo beat RussellBaze in the ChampionsChallenge, butfocusing on that factwould take away froma show full of nobility. "[I am proud to]have been able toconfront a jockey ofthe talent of Russell, the winningest of all,@said Ricardo. AAnd also

to do so here, at Cristal, the racetrack where Antonio,my father, began [his career] as a jockey, which wouldmark me as an athlete to continue this profession that Ienjoy so much." The idea for the Champions Challenge was taken upby the Jockey Club of Rio Grande do Sul, and ended uppaying huge dividends, with 4000 people filling thefacilities; an impressive figure, considering the GrandePremio Bento Goncalves, the local Breeders' CupClassic, attracts around 7,000. Everything was put together to try to get to the fifthand final race of the challenge with a flush markerbetween the local idol and the Canadian-born, Americanrider. The start was ideal for the North American, whowon the first race with Ricardo back in fourth, but inthe second race, Ricardo finished second with hisadversary in fourth. Baze emerged victorious in the thirdevent, while Ricardo finished ahead in the fourth.Ricardo emerged victorious again in the final event totake home the trophy. Madness invaded Cristal, and thecelebration of the public praising the idol was enoughto cause goosebumps.
