WEISBORD OFFERS ADVICE, GIVES THANKS Barry Weisbord, president and co-publisher of theThoroughbred Daily News, was honored as the 24th recipient of the John W. Galbreath Award forEntrepreneurship by the University of Louisville=s EquineIndustry Program Thursday night. The award waspresented at an intimate dinner held at the UniversityClub at Louisville that was hosted by Tim Capps, director of the Equine Industry Program. The Galbreath award, named after the renownedbusinessman, sportsman and philanthropist whofounded Darby Dan Farm in Kentucky, is given to aperson who has achieved entrepreneurial excellence, with criteria including success in business, creativity, vision, risk-taking, and the respect of peers andassociates. Students from the program attended the event, andwere offered Weisbord=s 10 Commandments ofbusiness, which began with, AYou shall always be asprepared as possible,@ and concluded with, AYou shallalways remember your word is your bond. Do what yousay you will do.@ Weisbord gave a brief overview of his career, stretching back to when he was a junior in college and, along with his friend Alan Goldberg, got a summer jobwalking hots for trainer Walter Kelley at Aqueduct. AAt the time, I was just a fan of Thoroughbredracing,@ said Weisbord. ASince that day, I have neverleft the horse industry. I have never applied for a job. Ihave never drafted a resume.@ Weisbord went on to train briefly--he ultimatelyrelinquished those duties to Goldberg--before foundingthe bloodstock portfolio management companyExecutive Bloodstock in 1979. In the 1980s, he helped found Matchmaker Breeders=Exchange, which facilitated the sale of stallion seasonsand shares. AI expanded Matchmaker from a yearlyauction to a weekly exchange with my partner JohnnyJones III, and we filled an office with co-workers whoshared our vision, loved the horse business, andworked harder than people in Lexington were used toworking,@ said Weisbord, who laughed, AThey answeredthe phone at 6:00 at night, when those sort of hourswere unheard of.@

He added, AIt's great to see people go on to fruitfulcareers after they leave your employ, and I'm proudthat a number of people from that staff went on toassume major industry positions. They include Darley'sCharlie Boden, Claiborne's Bernie Sams, your own TimCapps and Highclere's Harry Herbert, all of which wenton to outstanding careers.@ Weisbord later helped establish the AmericanChampionship Racing Series, and is currently thechairman of Trakus, the data and graphics system thattracks individual horses through a race. He also sits onthe Breeders= Cup board of directors, and co-chairs itsEnhanced Experience committee.

Weisbord devoted much of his speech toacknowledging the mentors and business associateswho helped and inspired him: Allen Jerkens, DavidWillmott, R.D. Hubbard, Michael Brod, his accountantRon Etkin and attorney Frank Becker, his longtimebusiness partners and friends Rich Santulli and RobertABat@ Masterson, his friend Bobby Flay and JerryFrankel, Aa lifelong entrepreneur who has been one ofmy greatest inspirations.@ He noted Darby Dan=s John Phillips, Galbreath=sgrandson, who was on hand, as were Denali Stud'sCraig and Holly Bandoroff, who have boardedWeisbord=s mares for over 30 years. Weisbord also addressed, Amy incredible, steadyingco-pilot, Sue Finley,@ his co-publisher at the TDN. ALikeat Matchmaker, together, we have collected an amazinggroup of people who not only share, but execute ourvision perfectly every day.@ Weisbord added, AFor centuries, the horse businesshas been a place that has a reputation of attractingrogues. And yet, every person I have named...is aperson whose word is their bond, and their handshakeis better than a contract. And for that, I'mimmeasurably proud.@ Weisbord admitted that, Ain the face of declininghandle, declining foal crop, declining interest,@ hisoptimism about the future of the Thoroughbred industrymight appear misplaced, but, he said, AI think [thoseproblems are] fixable.@

He detailed a three-part solution that included animprovement of the gambling experience andintroduction of proposition bets; an improvement insports quality; and an enhancement of the on-siteexperience. In the Asports quality@ category, Weisbord said aseries of races thatpits the best horsesagainst each otheron a regular basis, with Acommensuratefinancial awards,@ isstill necessary. AI don't think wecan be successful ifwe're the only sportthat doesn't crownour champions onthe field, anddoesn't have anyidea where they'regoing to show up next,@ he said. Weisbord closed out his speech by thanking hisfamily--his wife Sarah, soon-to-be 6-year-old daughterJuliette, and his twin boys Josh and Brad, the latter ofwhom followed his father into the horse business andwho was on hand to give Weisbord a belated birthdaygift--a signed saddle towel of Dubai World Cup winnerAnimal Kingdom. AI have had an interesting, rewarding, and, I hope, productive adult life,@ said Weisbord. AIn a word,blessed.@ For complete speech, click here. Click here for video.

The first weanlings by multiple Graded stakes winner American Lion made a fierce showing at the Saratoga October Sale, averaging more than seven times his stud fee. Two colts were offered and both sold, one for $40,000 and one for $33,000, an average of $36,500, quite a return on the $5,000 stud fee. American Lion (by Tiznow) covered more than 200 mares his first two seasons combined. His first crop are yearlings of 2014.

$400,000 filly at KEESEP

Led by a $400,000 yearling, the second high-priced filly by any freshman sire at Keeneland this year, G1 winner Tale of Ekati is proving to be one of the most commercial first-year stallions. With the yearling sales just now completed, Tale of Ekati boasts the highest percentage sold of any Kentucky-based freshman stallion

- 95% - with 38-of-40 offerings sold, including seven six-figure yearlings. Tale of Ekati also ranks among the top 10 U.S. freshman sires. Early reports for his second crop are equally promising. The first two weanlings from his second crop sold in October, for average price of $55,000.

GEM AFTER GEM IN PIPELINE OF TALE OF EKATI YEARLINGS

NO HIDING HOW GOOD THESE RUNNERS ARE The racing world is finding out what we at Darby Dan have known for quite some time: the progeny by Run Away and Hide can flat out run. From just 49 starters in first two crops, Run Away and Hide has already sired six stakes winners, four from his 3-year-old crop and two from his 2-year-old crop - an outstanding ratio of 12.5%. Three of those stakes winners are also Graded winners, for an incredible 6.3% Graded winners from starters. Writing in the October 2nd Thoroughbred Daily News, Bill Oppenheim called these accomplishments “A pretty stunning record for a horse who has really had to earn his stripes, and has.” Wow. We have been fielding calls for this undefeated son of Carson City all summer long. So, Breeders interested in seeking 2014 seasons to Run Away and Hide need to call soon.

Run Away and Hide

The first mares in-foal to our highly popular stallions Shackleford and Dialed In will be offered at Keeneland during the November 5-14 sessions.

Millionaire Classic winner Shackleford covered more mares than all but one freshman sire this season - 168. Nineteen of those will be offered at Keeneland, including daughters of Awesome Again, Bernardini, Distorted Humor, Indian Charlie, More Than Ready, Pulpit, Tiznow, and Unbridled’s Song.

Grade 1 winner Dialed In covered more mares than all but two freshman sires this season - 154. Fourteen from this book will be offered at Keeneland, including daughters of Quiet American, Tiznow, Arch, Salt Lake and Include.

‘GROOM,’ ‘TALES’ OPT FOR BOLD RULER Neither Strapping Groom (Johannesburg) nor FortyTales (Tale of the Cat) would have been out of place innext Saturday=s GI Breeders= Cup Sprint, but theconnections of both have instead opted for today=s GIII Bold Ruler H. Claimed by Drawing Away Stable andtrainer David Jacobson for $35,000 from Carl Dominoand Kinsman Stable, the 6-year-old entire provided animmediate return on that investment when he led boxto wire in this venue=s 6 1/2-panel Lion Cavern S. June26. He annexed Saratoga=s Kid Russell S. two weekslater, and upended the Spa=s seven-panel GI Forego S.Aug. 31 at 15-1. Strapping Groom enters off a third-place run in the six-panel GI Vosburgh Invitational S.Sept. 28. "I thought he ran very well in his last race,@said Jacobson. "A lot of those big names are at theBreeders' Cup, so I think he's going to be very tough inhere. He's doing really well and we're very excitedabout the race." Forty Tales strung together wins in theGIII Derby Trial S., GII Woody Stephens S. and GII Amsterdam S. over the spring and summer, but wasfourth as the favorite in Saratoga=s GI King=s Bishop S.Aug. 24 and filled the same slot in the Vosburgh."When we decided not to do to the Breeders' CupSprint, this became the most logical option," offeredtrainer Todd Pletcher. "Seven eighths is probably hisideal distance." Dogwood Stable=s Big Screen(Speightstown) crossed the wire first in the rained-offJaipur over track and trip June 7, but was placedsecond for interference. Most recently, the grey tookthe grassy one-mile Who=s To Pay S. here Sept. 21.

DONNA LOOKS TO RECAPTURE THE GLORY Sunday=s G1 Tenno Sho Autumn at TokyoRacecourse provides an intriguing clash of two previouswinners, as well as the return of reigning Horse of theYear Gentildonna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Theimposing 4-year-old filly swept Japan=s Triple Tiara lastyear and capped off a spectacular season with a

thrilling victory over theprevious year=s TripleCrown hero Orfevre (Jpn)(Stay Gold {Jpn}). Aplanned bid for the G1 Prix de l=Arc deTriomphe was shelvedwhen she failed to find thewinner=s circle in twooutings earlier this year, finishing second in the G1

Dubai Sheema Classic Mar. 30 and third in the G1 Takarazuka Kinen atHanshin when last seen June 23, but trainer SeiIshizaka indicated confidence that his charge will returnto her best. AShe's shaping up nicely," he said. AIt willhave been a while, but we feel like she's getting there,step-by-step. She's just taking it slowly but surely andwill be fine as long as she gets to the race in onepiece." Defending race winner Eishin Flash (Jpn) (King=sBest) finished well behind Gentildonna in ninth in theJapan Cup, but she could well have her hands full withhim this time as he bids to become the first back-to-back winner since Symboli Kris S in 2002-03. Arespectable third in the G1 Audemars Piguet QueenElizabeth II Cup at Sha Tin Apr. 28, the 6-year-oldreturned from a four-month rest to annex the G2 Mainichi Okan here Oct. 6, and will have racefitness on his side. Danon Ballade (Jpn) (Deep Impact{Jpn}) is searching for his first win at the highest level, but he holds strong credentials with recent narrowloses in the Takarazuka Kinen and the Sept. 22G2 Sankei Sho All Comers S., and trainer YasutoshiIkee indicated his charge is primed for a top effort. "Ireally think he's completely come into his own," Ikeesaid. "We're hoping the going gets tough in the TennoSho.

And if that [happens], since the Takarazuka Kinenwinner [Gold Ship {Jpn}] won't be around, DanonBallade should win hands down--or at least that's we'rehoping how it turns out," Ikee said. Ikee will also saddleTosen Jordan (Jpn) (Jungle Pocket {Jpn}), whocaptured this race two years ago but has yet to winsince. Ikee admitted his charge is not what he used tobe. "He's not like he was two years ago," Ikee said."He's gotten slower with age, and it might take a bitmore time to get him up to speed.@

BREEDERS’ CUP

BULLETIN

Oxbow Retired cont.

AWe are absolutely thrilled and very appreciative thatCalumet Farm has made the decision to stand Oxbowat Taylor Made, along with their plans to support hisstallion career,@ said Ben Taylor, Vice President ofTaylor Made Stallions. ATo us, Oxbow is the classic,two-turn dirt horse that both the breeders and yearlingbuyers look for. He was a major contender in everyTriple Crown race and is one of the toughest horses I=veseen in some time.@ Added his trainer D. Wayne Lukas,AThere=s so much to like about Oxbow. When webought him as a yearling, he was so athletic that itlooked like you could put a saddle on him and run him.He was one tough son of a gun and as durable as theymake them. On top of his great pedigree, Oxbow hasthe most important trait a stallion needs, and that=s hisnatural speed and ability to carry it over a distance ofground.@

O’BRIEN WILL STICK TO HIS DAY JOB Television personality Conan O=Brien, host of theshow which bears his name each night at 11 p.m. onthe TBS network, took to the Santa Anita announcer=sbooth for Friday=s second race, putting an unmistakablespin on the race call. Thewhole world was listening and so, hey, let=s have somefun with it. Conan seems like a fantastic guy and Ireally, really liked him. He=s got no airs about him andhe=s very funny. The bottom line is, we need to dothings like this now and again. We need to reach out tonew people, to new audiences, and have fun.@ O=Brien, who worked such phrases as Apancakes on the griddle@and Abottoms up, boys@ into his race description, ispondering >legal action.= AI actually called them allcorrectly getting into the gate, which I=m very proudof,@ said O=Brien. AOnce the race started, there wassome confusionYAnd, again, I have a complaint I wouldlike to lodge against the Los Angeles Turf Club--whichis, jockeys wearing similar colors. If you=re going tohave idiot celebrities come in and call a race, you can=thave two guys in all blue and two guys in all white, it=snot fair. That is my official complaint. I=m also suingthem.
