GIII Sorrento S. cont.

AShe broke well, but I didn't want to be up on thelead," explained winning rider Rafael Bejarano. ATheywere going too fast. I had a strong hold on her; I had towait. But at the three-eighths [pole], when I saw thefavorite go inside, I knew I had to go, too. She gotrunning and stayed strong. She=s game.@ Winning trainer Doug O=Neill added, AShe=s a beautifulfilly. We've been a little concerned at times, becauseshe's so quiet around the barn. She's just a very pro-fessional filly, but you never know how they're going torun on the track until they run. Rafael was up prettyclose early, and when I saw the fast fractions, I figuredRafael must feel like he's really loaded. He's aworld-class rider so you go with that. He knew he hada lot of horse.@ In her career debut, Wickedly Perfect pressed theearly pace before rolling home late to post an easy 4 3/4-length victory going five panels over Hollywood=sCushion Track June 27. Bejarano, who was aboard forher victory that day, was back in the irons yesterday torecord his fourth victory on the card. ARight now I'mfeeling good,@ said Bejarano. ALast week, I had somebad luck. Things weren't going my way, but that's thebusiness. That's how this game is. It goes up and itgoes down. But you always have to stay up. That's theway you have to think about it. Right now, my confi-dence is up and it is getting better." Also basking in Wickedly Perfect=s Sorrento victorywas O=Neill=s brother, Dennis, who helped pick out thefilly earlier this season. AWe bought her at the OBS Aprilsale [2-year-olds in training],@ confirmed Dennis O=Neill.A[Bloodstock agent] Bob Feld helped me pick her out.He liked her and I just fell in love with her. The firsttime we worked her, we were just smitten with her. We're very excited about her. She=s very professional."Click for the brisnet.com chart or the brisnet.com PPs.

Pica Slew has been ultra-impressive in three starts atCalder this year following a solid sixth on debut in theloaded My Dear S. at Woodbine last June. The bay wastransferred to conditioner Joseph Calascibetta for her

three Florida outings, first break-ing her maiden by 10 1/4 lengthsMay 7, then scoring without everbeing asked in the June 12 LeaveMe Alone S., and finally annexingthe GIII Azalea S. by two lengthsJuly 10 with a 101 Beyer SpeedFigure. Pica Slew rated kindly insecond behind runaway train

Rapport (Songandaprayer) in the Azalea, but may findherself on the lead here breaking from the one hole. This will be her first start for Michael Hushion, whoboasts a 23-percent win percentage with new acquisi-tions over the past five years. Tidal Pool has run well inroute races this season with a second in the GII FantasyS. and third in the GI Kentucky Oaks behind divisionalleader Blind Luck (Pollard=s Vision), but there is reasonto believe that sprinting is her best game. She broke hermaiden at 4 1/2 furlongs at Churchill last May anddueled and drew off to a three-length score in a six-furlong Spa allowance that August.

Ash Zee, a Zayat Stables $375,000 yearling pur-chase, is the only runner in the field with two wins atseven furlongs-- a sometimes quirky distance. A maidenwinner at Churchill June 5, she took an allowance heretwo weeks ago going today=s trip.

de-force in the GI Donn H.Feb. 6, exploding in thestretch for a 12 3/4-length romp, good for a121 Beyer Speed Figure.Off since another easytop-level success in the GI Metropolitan H. May31, the speedy four-year-old looms an imposingforce and may need toface some sort of adver-sity not scoop up this

prestigious prize. Haynesfield may be the source of thatadversity if he pesters the chalk early, setting it up foreither Blame or Musket Man. The former became aGrade I winner last time when he ran down GII NewOrleans H. winner Battle Plan (Empire Maker) in the finalstrides of the Stephen Foster H. at Churchill June 12.

That was a nice effort, and the somewhat late-bloom-ing four-year-old has a right to step forward again, butthe fact that Battle Plan was retired after the Fosterwith an injury he appeared to suffer in the stretch ofthat race casts into doubt whether Blame=s performancewas as good as it looks. Musket Man, second behindQuality Road in the Met Mile for his fourth career GradeI placing, annexed the 2009 Illinois Derby at today=sdistance of nine furlongs.

out to beat St Trinians(GB) (Piccolo {GB}) lasttime in the GI Vanity H.June 13, but no filly ormare of that one=s qualityis signed on here. Itwould seem that the onlyway to beat the late-run-ner is to build up an insur-mountable lead, leavingher with too much to dolate, but if several hereemploy that tactic they

may end up setting the race up perfectly for the bigfavorite. Princess Taylor, who opened up as many asfive lengths early in the GIII Beverly Hills H. over 10furlongs on the turf June 26 before getting passed latefor the top spot; Dance to My Tune, who was secondto Zenyatta in the GI Santa Margarita H. in March; andthe stretching-out Rinterval all look to have their eye onthe early lead, but for one to give Zenyatta a scare, twomust hang back.

Trickmeister Headed to Travers... J “TDN Rising Star” J Trickmeister (Proud Citi-zen), the newest addition to the IEAH Stable roster, islikely to make his first start for his new connections inthe GI Travers S. Aug. 28, Daily Racing Form reports. The colt, previously owned by former Kentucky Gover-nor Brereton Jones and Tim Thornton, is perfect andhas never been headed in his three career trips to thepost, including a last-out victory in the Barbaro S. atDelaware Park. In that event, his first try at a route ofground, he was able to get away with a slow pace andoutsprinted his rivals home. Despite the certainty ofmore and classier speed in the AMidsummer Derby,@IEAH principal Mike Iavarone assures that it won=t behard to spot Trickmeister in the running. AWe=re com-mitted to the lead.@ Iavarone told DRF. AIf First Dude(Stephen Got Even) wants to win the Travers he mighthave to deal with us. I would imagine that it would takea lot to outsprint our horse, especially early in the race. This horse has an incredible stride.@ For his part, trainerRick Dutrow Jr. has been impressed with what he=sseen in the few days he=s had Trickmeister under hiscare. AWe like him,@ Dutrow told the Form. AHe=s agood-looking horse, he=s got plenty of size to him.Iavarone bought him for the Travers. Right now, I cer-tainly can=t argue with him. I like the horse, I thinkwe=re in pretty good shape with him.@

Always First was off the board in six of seven startslast year, including a fifth-place finish as the favorite inthis event, but did pick up a win in an optional claimergoing 11 furlongs at Delaware Park in June. The geld-ing was given a go over fences in his 2009 finale, beat-ing only one home over Florida=s Palm Beach courseNov. 28, and disappeared for six months. Now nine, hemade his return in a $50,000 claiming event at Dela-ware June 8, where he ran second by a nose, and hewas given little chance in his second stab at the John=sCall. Content to rate near the back of the pack in theearly going of this extended route, Always First gainedground on the far turn, rallied in the four path whenthey hit the lane and took over late to score the upset.Winning trainer Tom Voss also conditioned John=s Call(Lord at War {Arg}), who captured the GI Turf ClassicInvitational S. and GI Sword Dancer Invitational S. atthe age of nine. AI should just train nine-year-olds--if youhave any nine-year-olds, send them to me,@ Voss said.AWinning this race was a great thrill, considering all thathas happened, and it felt great.@ John=s Call had to beeuthanized early this year after fracturing a leg in apaddock accident. He was 19. Voss had a moment ofdeja vu as the field for this race headed for the stretch.A[Always First] looked like John=s Call coming aroundturn in the Sword Dancer,@ he remarked.
