Hymn Book (Arch) looks primed to deliver trainerShug McGaughey a third Whitney. The GI Donn H. heromade up for off-the-board finishes in the GII Oaklawn H.

Apr. 14 and GIII Pimlico Special S.May 18 with a very good second toMucho Macho Man (Macho Uno)after exiting the stalls a bit flat-footed in a salty renewal of the GIISuburban H. at Belmont Park July7. AI=m going to say he stumbled [inthe Suburban], and I think that=swhat he did,@ said McGaughey, who saddled the legendary

Personal Ensign and Easy Goer to collect back-to-backrenewals of this prestigious contest in 1988-89,respectively. AI think he just broke hard, and his rightfront went out from under him. When it did, [Garcia]had to gather him up and sort of lost all position. I waspretty happy with the way he did finish. He came onagainst that group of horses. The winner is a very nicehorse, Mucho Macho Man. He had a really good trip andbeen laying up there, and it=s hard when you give upthat much ground to catch up to that kind of horse.@Ron the Greek is certainly a deserving favorite withGrade I victories in this term=s Santa Anita H. andStephen Foster already under his belt.

Ortensia registered a belated first top-level success inthe Nov. 19 G1 Burswood-Winterbottom S. at Perth'sAscot track, having been disqualified from first in theprevious term's G1 Galaxy at Randwick, and opened

this year with animpressive score in theMar. 31 G1 Al QuozSprint on Meydan'sWorld Cup undercard. However, she hasbeen undone byBritain's wet summerin her two lateststarts, running ninthwhen tackling RoyalAscot's mud in theJune 19 G1 King's

Stand S., and finishing fourth when encountering evendeeper conditions in the G1 July Cup at Newmarket lasttime July 14. The bay found a sound surface at last forthis European farewell and did not disappoint her legionof British admirers in the straight dash to leave on ahigh. Ortensia was unable to match furious earlyfractions and was isolated in rear. Finding open space inthe center of track from halfway, she bisected groupson either side when powering by rivals approaching thefinal eighth and carried that momentum into the closingstages to easily assert superiority.

"She was head and shoulders above the rest ofthem," insisted rider William Buick, who was also in thesaddle at Newmarket. "I wanted to sit just behind theleaders, but I don't think she had ever been downhillbefore. [Trainer] Paul [Messara] told me that I shouldn'task her to do anything she didn't want to do. I thinkshe'd be better over six furlongs, but five at York in the[Aug. 24 G1] Nunthorpe would be fine for her.Obviously she will be going back to Australia soon, butI'd like it if she stayed." Newmarket conditioner TobyColes, who had overseen Orstensia's preparation, added, "I've not really had to do much with her, I'vejust been overseeing things. The Royal Ascot run was abit confusing, but she ran a great race at Newmarket onground she had never seen before. It wouldn't beprofessional of me to say what she is going to do next, that's up to Paul, but I hope she stays."

Fourth in the June 2 G1 Coronation Cup atEpsom, he slipped to an uncharacteristic 10th in RoyalAscot's G2 Hardwicke S. June 22, but bounced back instyle here to book a ticket to the Nov. 6 G1 MelbourneCup. The eventual winner was sent straight to the frontand maintained easy control until turning for home.Asked to lengthen passing the three-furlong marker, hewas still under wraps entering the final eighth and tooktwo late cracks of the whip to hold all comers at bay."Nobody wanted to go on and this lad doesn't mindbowling along in front as all he really does is gallop,"said rider Kieren Fallon. "He has been highly tried, he'srun some good races in defeat, and I hope this will be aconfidence booster for him. It was windy out there so itwas difficult to know how quick we were going, but itis hard to get by a good horse here when he is allowedto dictate in front." Winning trainer Luca Cumani=s wifeSara Cumani added, "It's nice to see him win and he isdefinitely on target for Melbourne. It is up to Luca, but Icould see him having a prep race in the [Oct. 6 G1]Caulfield Cup."

At the close of this recently upgraded contest, whichproved to be a typically dramatic Goodwood encounter,Trumpet Major and Archbishop proved inseparable in thephoto. Whether either would have prevailed had thedesperately unlucky third-placed Aljamaaheer (Ire)(Dubawi (Ire) enjoyed a clear run in the closing stages isdebatable, but Trumpet Major was carrying a four-poundpenalty, while Archbishop is an unexposed colt who ison a steep upward curve. The former was impressivewhen winning last year's G2 Champagne S. atDoncaster and the G3 Craven S. at Newmarket on his3-year-old bow Apr. 19. After a highly creditable fourthin the May 5 G1 2000 Guineas back at the latter venue,he returned under the weather when beating no rivals inthe Irish equivalent at The Curragh three weeks later.Archbishop jumped straight from handicap to patterncompany last time and was 1 1/4-lengths second toXanadou (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) in the G3 Prix Paul deMoussac over this trip at Chantilly June 9. RichardHughes kept Trumpet Major under wraps against thefence in mid-division before creeping closer on the finalturn. As Frankie Dettori asked Archbishop to stretchapproaching the final furlong, he soon took the lead butthat was short-lived as Trumpet Major cruised alongsideand headed him with 100 yards remaining only to bejoined again on the line. Aljamaaheer met serious trafficon the inside just in behind and finished full of run onhis first try at this trip. "I had to burn some petrol to geta good spot, and coming round the turn I was able tore-group, but when I saw Richard [Hughes] was goingtwice as well, I had to try everything to get him off thebridle," Dettori explained. "Once I did, the game was onand both horses really tried. It's the first time I've riddenhim, and he had every chance to throw the towel in butdidn't." Hughes said of Trumpet Major, "They went veryhard up front and it's the four-pound penalty more thanlack of stamina which made the difference," Hughessaid. "I just sat for five strides when I got to Frankie, asthat last furlong here feels like an eternity. He is up toGroup 1 standard--I went a strong, even pace making allin the Guineas and he just weakened in the last 100meters, so he's better being ridden more patiently andyou can put a line through his Curragh run, as he wassick.@

Winner of the GII Woody Stephens S., GIII Bay Shore S. and GIII Swale S. earlier this year, thebay colt shipped up from his Florida base shortly afterfinishing second by a neck in the GII Carry Back S. atCalder July 7. AHis regular rider was aboard him, and wetold him we didn=t want anything faster than :49,@ saidParbhoo, whose father Bisnath conditions the speedycolt. AHe went in 49.41, which is perfect. A debut winner at Calder lastsummer, Trinniberg was sent off at 5-1 in the GIISaratoga Special S., but backed up and wound up adistant fifth to Union Rags (Dixie Union). He wassubsequently dismissed at 68-1 in the GI ThreeChimneys Hopeful S. on Saratoga's closing day and wasa grudging second to Currency Swap (High Cotton) inthat premier event for juveniles, where the also-ransincluded I'll Have Another (Flower Alley). SARATOGA DEBUT FOR COTEAU GROVE Keith and Ginger Myers= Coteau Grove Farms will berepresented by its first Saratoga sales yearling Mondaywhen Lundi Gras (Empire Maker--Lady of Peace, by Lordat War {Arg}), a filly bred by the Louisiana-basedoperation, goes throughthe Fasig-Tipton ring aship 15 through the FourStar Sales consignment. Founded in 2008,Coteau Grove is thefulfillment of a lifelongdream for Keith Myers. AWe skipped ageneration,@ Myersexplains when asked howhe got into the racing game. AMy grandfather wasinvolved in horse racing in Louisiana and, as a child, Igrew up in the middle of that. Every chance I had, Iwould be at his farm with he and my grandmother or atthe racetrack. AMy dad was a farmer and he didn=t have thewherewithal to get in the horse business, but I wouldstay at the track every chance I got--I just loved thehorses,@ Myers continued. AIn my mind, ever since I wasa little kid, the dream was to one day be in the horsebusiness like my grandpa was, even at that level.@ In 1994, the husband and wife team founded the LHCGroup Aaround the kitchen table.@ The health carecompany grew from a start-up company to a publiclytraded company in 2005, providing Myers theopportunity to fulfill that dream. AWe had some good fortune in business, and my wifeand I had the opportunity to buy a couple hundred acresof land and then build a farm and actually live on a farmjust like my grandparents, so it=s like every day of mylife, I am living the whole dream come true,@ Myers said.AI never thought I would be able to do it at this level. Itis definitely what makes me tick every day. It=s ashame, but it=s almost like now I do my day job tosupport my habit of horse racing. I am sure I am notalone in that.@ The Myerses were hooked from the start. AThe first year we got into it, we bought a couple ofmares, but we loved it so much we bought moreproperty and expanded and now we are all-in, so tospeak,@ Myers explained. AWe have a full-time staff atthe farm and we have our own full-time staff trainer. Cont. p15

AOur objective is to have top-quality mares bred to topstallions that are capable at running in open company atevery level, but we stick within the Louisiana programbecause it is just a great fall-back position if you get onethat can=t make it to that level. The Louisiana-bredprogram is quite lucrative.@ Myers, who was recently elected to the board of theLouisiana Breeders= Association, thinks Coteau GroveFarms has positioned itself in the middle of Louisiana=sburgeoning Thoroughbred breeding industry. AI just see a whole new level of business thought andseriousness to the business that wasn=t there before,@Myers commented. AIt seemed like, in the past, peoplein Louisiana were in the horse business more as a hobbythan a real for-profit business entity, and now I see thatshifting. We have a five-year business plan for the farmand a budget, just like we have for our public healthcare company, and that is something my grandfathernever had.@ The revitalization of the Louisiana breeding industryhas attracted higher profile stallions and has meant anincreased presence by Louisiana buyers at Kentucky=smajor sales, according to Myers. ALouisiana used to be thought of as a market wherethe horses were all just cheap speed horses and so thestallions that would stand in Louisiana were stallionsthat just couldn=t make it anywhere else,@ Myerscommented. ANow I am seeing better stallions cominginto the state and the bar will be raised again next year.We just had Closing Argument come to Louisiana,D=wildcat is coming in--five years ago, none of that wasgoing on. I look around, I see everybody raising theirgame. I really believe in the very near future you aregoing to see Louisiana-breds represented in some of thebiggest races in the country--I can see that happening. We are going to Kentucky and buying mares in Book 1and Book 2, that is where you have to be. In Louisianafive years ago, no one would show up until Book 6 or7.@

Instead of relying on free agents, Myers has set up ateam of individuals dedicated solely to the success ofCoteau Grove, and he thinks that has paid dividends. AI moved to a permanent annual elite relationship withSid Fernando at Werk Thoroughbreds, so we use them,@Myers said. AThey exclusively do all of our analysis andour recommendations to help us decide what we wantto buy and then I use an agent representative do thebuying for me and I pay them a flat fee.@ Coteau Grove horses are all trained by Pat Devereux,Jr., who also serves as the organization=s racingmanager. AWe started giving horses to trainers on a day rate inthe beginning,@ Myers explained. ABut we wanted tohave a lot of horses and try to groom horses for thelong-term. So we changed our plans and hired PatDevereux as our full-time in-house trainer who is on asalary--he doesn=t have any other clients, it=s just us.That has really changed the quality of our operation.Last year, we saw a real jump in average earnings perstart. So that has worked well for us.@ Myers has plenty of praise for the Coteau Groveteam.

Mott's to-do list may shrink“Trainer Bill Mott owns a litany of accomplishments in a Hall of Famecareer, but he’s never won the Whitney Handicap. Then again, that’shardly surprising because as much as he racks his brain the 59-year-oldMott can’t recall having a starter in Saratoga’s premier race for olderhorses.” Bob Ehalt, ESPNB.C. Cup Day is a local horse racing success story“It is hard to believe how much Mon-day's B.C. Cup Day at HastingsRace-course has grown since its inception in 1995.That was when theidea for having a day set aside for horses bred in British Columbia wasfirst hatched by local breeders.” Tom Wolski, The ProvinceCollecting unclaimed tickets a lucrative endeavor for some atSaratoga Race Course“The only thing worse than losing a bet might be winning it and notcollecting the money. How often does that happen? Based on theamount of unclaimed winnings from on-track betting in New York eachyear, quite a bit.” David M. Johnson, The SaratogianTwitter: From the horse's mouth“You might think you're a big deal on Twitter. But unless you've got morethan 20,000 followers there's a five-year-old horse out there tweeting youinto a cyber hole.” Sheena McKenzie, CNN

APat spends his whole day looking at claiming racesacross the country,@ he said. AHe is nicking mares withstallions, he is doing all of that. And Annie Bourque, who has loved horses her whole life, she runs the farm, does all the record keeping and is hands on at the farm, six days a week--but we can=t keep Annie out of thereeven on Sundays.@ Coteau Grove Farms, based in the town of Sunset, currently has a broodmare band of 15, but Myersenvisions that number will grow to 20 in the next fewyears. It also has 21 horses in training. Myers is prepared to race, sell or breed as the marketdictates. Those market conditions led to Lundi Gras=entry into the Saratoga sale. The filly is out of Lady ofPeace (Lord at War {Arg}), a mare the Myerses acquiredfor $45,000 out of the 2008 Keeneland November sale. AThis is a for-profit business, so we will take profitwherever it presents itself,@ Myers explained. AIn thiscase, we have an Empire Maker, Clear Sailing, who is abroodmare on the farm. And Lundi Gras is an EmpireMaker filly who would be extremely valuable to us if wedidn=t have Clear Sailing, so with the current marketvalue of all the Empire Makers, it gives us anopportunity to turn a profit on that horse. When you seethat opportunity, you have to take it, strictly from abusiness perspective. There are good investments thatare made in the horse business, but some people fallinto that trap of falling in love with them. You have thatwindow of opportunity when you can make a buck on ahorse, but if you don=t, it=s too late.@ To that end, Myers admits he does have anotherpolicy. AI keep my wife from feeding peppermints to the onesthat could be a profit center--we put them at the backof the farm and don=t let her develop a relationship withthem,@ he laughed. Myers admitted he is excited about having his firstrepresentative in the Saratoga sale. AI don=t think there have been many fillies of thatquality coming out of Louisiana and going to Saratoga,@he said. ALouisiana wasn=t thought of as having thatquality of breeding. I have a lot of Louisiana pride, thewhole being part of the Louisiana-bred program and nowbeing on the board, it feeds all of that Louisiana pride. We=re very proud of our heritage and where we arefrom. So if it makes Louisiana look good, it makes mefeel really good.@ Coteau Grove Farms is active in every facet of theindustry. After selling at Saratoga, Myers expects to bean active buyer at the OBS August and KeenelandSeptember sale. AWe are buying and selling, we claim horses that wesee that have good pedigrees that could be broodmares,so we=re doing it at all levels,@ Myers said. AThe onlything we=re not doing right now, we don=t currently owna position in a stallion, but we=re looking and by nextseason, we will have an ownership position in a stallionin Louisiana.@

While Coteau Grove Farms is all business, Myersadmits it is still a labor of love for the couple. AGinger and I wouldn=t be in the business if we didn=tlive on the farm,@ he said. AEvery morning and everyafternoon, it is in our backyard. It=s a 200-acre block ofproperty, but our house in the middle of it. So we areout there with the mares and the babies and when it isfoaling season, Ginger is out there helping deliver thebabies in the middle of the night. If this were locatedeven a few miles down the road from our house, wecertainly wouldn=t get as much enjoyment out of it. Idon=t know if we would have done it at this level.@ -Jessica Martini

TODAY’S INSIGHTS

We have given our two TDN crack handicappers, Brian DiDonato and SteveSherack, a mythical $1000 bankroll and told them they can bet no more than 5%of that on any given day at Saratoga on a straight win bet. The winner, at theend of the meet, gets $100 in a TVG betting account, along with bragging rightsuntil next July.

DiDonato: Friday - Another winner for Sherack, and another too little, too late run for me. . . At least I’m still in contention for second.

Today - Race 4 - Alw, (S), 3yo/up, 1mT - #10 Diso On (12-1) I simply don't see much separation between the runners in this field, and think Disco On's actual chances of winning will be significantlybetter than his odds will reflect--I'm expecting much higher than his 12-1morning-line quote. He's extremely dirtied up on paper thanks to roughtrips, and he returns to the one-mile distance he hasn't tried sincebreaking his maiden in his first turf try at 52-1 at Aqueduct lastNovember. Disco On finished out his 2-year-old term with two somewhatsurprisingly competitive efforts on the dirt in New York-bred stakescompany, but ultimately made his way back to what figures to be hispreferred surface. He went seven panels at Belmont June 3 in the NYSSSpectacular Bid S. and had made a ridiculous wide, premature movebefore finishing ninth, beaten 21. Subsequently stretched out to ninefurlongs on soft turf June 23, the bay failed to settle as they crawled upfront, and pulled himself up to press three-wide without cover beforeagain dropping far out of it late. Back to seven furlongs July 14, DiscoOn enjoyed a nice pocket journey--but he wasn't "empty" as the short-form comment states--he was totally shut off at the top of the stretch andjust couldn't quite get back into the game in time after losing momentum, settling for fourth. He did gallop out very well, however. The two runnersthat finished directly ahead of Disco On return here as do a number ofsimilar-looking horses from higher-profile connections, but to dismisshim as less than on par with this field off his recent trips would be a bigmistake--he just might pull off something like his graduation shocker.Play: $20 Win (Turf Only). Alternate 1: Race 5 - $20 Win on #10Fredericksburg (Turf Only). Alternate 2: Race 2 - $20 Win on #10 InSpeight Ofitall.

Sherack: Friday - Wow, even I don’t know what to say at this point...DiDonato is accusing me of frog juicing, but a desk inspection came upclean. Released three horses Friday, and all of them came through, including my main play--$25 to win on Jitney ($17.80)... Two alternatesNever On Time ($14.60) and Smart Believer ($7.40) added to theparty... Any chance NYRA extends the Saratoga meeting throughDecember?

Today - Race 10 - GI Whitney H., 3yo/up, 1 1/8m - #8 Hymn Book (4-1) Expecting a top-shelf performance from GI Donn H. hero Hymn Bookin today’s main event. The Stuart Janney III homebred will have morethan enough pace to run at, and should thrive on the return to two turnsfollowing a razor sharp second to Mucho Macho Man after an unkindbreak in the GII Suburban H. at Belmont July 7. He was given plenty oftime to refocus following mediocre performances in the GII Oaklawn H.and GIII Pimlico Special S., and the strategy appears to have done thetrick. Shug certainly knows what it takes to win this contest, and theprice should be generous enough with plenty of others figuring to take agood deal of action at the windows. Johnny V returning to the saddleaboard a horse that always seems to find trouble exiting the stalls isdefinitely an added bonus. Play: $50 Win. Alternate 1: Race 2 - $40Win on #10 In Speight Ofitall. Alternate 2: Race 6 - $20 Win (Turf Only)on #1 Lord of Love.

One of Mark Johnston's irrepressible performers,Fulbright is a colt going places fast after hard-earnedwins in six-furlong handicaps at Newmarket July 13and on Saturday. His versatility was also in evidence onthose starts at the July Course, as they came oncontrasting ground conditions of soft and good-to-firm.Drawn favorably here on only his second try at this trip, the bay was settled behind the leading trio early, andhis jockey had no stamina fears as he sent him to thefront with a quarter mile remaining. Maintaining thegallop all the way to the line, he always looked set toprovide his stable with a fifth renewal despite the lateheadway of the former pattern-race performer Mabait."I won on him over seven furlongs and it took me awhile to get going, so I said if Mark [Johnston] steppedhim up he'd do better and he dropped him back to sixand he won twice," de Sousa said.
