BAUMS AWAY The husband and wife team of Michael and ReikoBaum may not have vast numbers of mares at theirdisposal on their Man O War Farm in Lexington,Kentucky, but while the Man O War broodmare roster

currently numberssix, the Baums=operation hasdeveloped areputation forbreeding young, progressive mareswith a solid pageto many of theindustries mostcommercialstallions.Underscoring thatfact, the New

York-based couple have four yearlings catalogued--all inBook 1--in this year=s Keeneland September Sale.Heading the group is the first yearling through the ringfor the couple, Hip 84, a colt by Galileo (Ire). The Feb.1 foal is out of Egyptian Queen (Storm Cat), whobrought $3.8 million at this sale in 2005. A daughter ofthe English and Irish highweighted sprint filly WarriorQueen (Quiet American), the 8-year-old mare is a half-sister to dual Grade II winner A.P. Warrior (A.P. Indy).Carrying this foal in utero, the mare returned toKeeneland in November of 2010 and was secured bythe Baums at the reduced price of $390,000. AThis year, we have a really special horse that I reallyhope will do well,@ enthused Michael Baum. AHe=sprobably the best-looking yearling I=ve ever seen. Heseems to be perfect in every way.@ Regarding the colt=s sire, who is responsible forEuropean superstar Frankel (GB), Baum said, AHe=s bythe best stallion in the world. His offspring generallyrun in Europe, so I haven=t seen many of them firsthand, but I can=t really imagine that there would be thatmany nicer than this one out there.@ With a pedigree which would surely have broughtfireworks at any European venue, the Baums decided tosend the colt to an American sale instead. AWe considered selling him in Europe, but we decidedto sell him here because we are based here and wewanted to enjoy it,@ explained Baum. AI think if youhave the right horse, then he=ll do well no matter wherewe sell him.@

In addition to the Galileo colt, Man O War Farm alsooffers Hip 86, a filly by Unbridled=s Song out ofEmmalee (Smart Strike). The 5-year-old mare is out ofLassie Connection (Seattle Slew), a half-sister to Group 1 winner Wolfhound and Broodmare of the YearWeekend Surprise. The very next horse through thering, who is also bred by the Baums, is a colt byDistorted Humor out of Etta Lee (Forestry). Offered asHip 87, the Jan. 19 foal is from the family of multiplegraded stakes winner Mambo Slew (Kingmambo) andthe extended family of Argentine champion Mat-Boy(Arg). The final member of the quartet is Hip 112, a fillyby Unbridled=s Song. The dark bay is out of the unracedmare Lady=s Quest (Rainbow Quest), a half-sister todual Grade I-winning turf horse Grand Couturier (GB)(Grand Lodge).

September Success... Baum, who generally retains between five to 12 mares and usually remains under the $400,000mark when buying broodmares, admitted he paid themost he=s ever offered for a horse at public auction at

the KeenelandNovember sale in1999 whensecuring a daughterof Seeking the Goldout of three-timeGrade I winnerClassy Cathy(Private Account).Purchased for$475,000, Mimi=sGolden Girl wassubsequently bred

to Giant=s Causeway and the mare made good on thegamble when her first foal, Noble Causeway, brought$1.15 million at the Keeneland September sale in 2003.Secured by My Meadowview Farm, the colt finishedrunner-up in the GI Florida Derby and third in the GIIIBen Ali S. before retiring with $360,010 in earnings. AWhenever I buy a mare, it=s usually more than Ihave,@ quipped Baum, regarding Mimi=s Golden Girl=spurchase price. "But she definitely turned out to beworth it." Baum, originally from Brooklyn, currently resides inManhattan, but spends plenty of time at the couple=sfarm in Lexington. An artist who heads a successfulframing business in New York, Baum became involvedwith horses as a young man, frequenting many of NewYork=s Thoroughbred tracks. AI really liked horses, and when I could afford to buyone, I did,@ he said. AI always liked horses, but didn=tget involved with owning and breeding them until later. It=s been about 30 years now, but I have been sellingthrough my own farm for the last eight years.@ After many years of employing outside operations toprep and sell his youngtsers at auction, Baum took theplunge in January of 2001 with the purchase 112-acreMan O War Farm. Originally part of Samuel Riddle andWalter Jeffords= Faraway Farm, the historic tract ofland was named after the iconic champion of the samename who was foaled on the property.

Retiring with 20 wins from 21 career starts, includingscores in the Preakness S., Belmont S., Travers S. andJockey Club Gold Cup, the mighty Man o= War stood atthe farm until his death at age 30 in 1947. He wasburied at the farm before being reinterred at theKentucky Horse Park in the 1970's. These days, Baum breedsexclusively to sell at the fallyearling sales, offering theoccasional mare at thebreeding stock sales in aneffort to keep upgrading hissmall band. The yearlingswhich fail to sell in the ringjoin Baum=s racing team, which currently consists offour in training withLexington-based DesmondFogarty. AOver the last few years, we=ve had some sell well, selling between $200,000 and $450,000,@ offeredBaum. ABut the last couple of years were difficultbecause of the market.@ Despite the downturn in the market, Baum hascontinued to breed to the best sires the industry has tooffer. AThe stallions that I bred to three years ago were$300,000 and now you can breed to them for$75,000, so you just try to move with the market,@explained Baum. AIt all depends on where you are andwhere the market is at the time you have to breedthose mares. The better pedigree you=ve got, hopefully, the better you are going to do.@ According to Baum, the small operation sticks to theprincipal plan it launched several years ago. AWe are always looking for better mares, so for themoment, we buy what we can afford,@ offered Baum.ASo, I try to buy younger mares from good families asopposed to better mares that I couldn=t afford. Our planis to have between five and 10 mares over the nextfew years, but hopefully, keep improving the quality wehave.@ Can we expect to see the Baums return to Keenelandin November to add to their broodmare band? AI hope so,@ said Baum. AIt depends what we doMonday.@ --Christina Bossinakis

KEENELAND=S GEOFFREY RUSSELL On Monday at 4 p.m., the 2012 renewal of the

Keeneland September Yearling Salebegins in Lexington, Kentucky. Some3,604 yearlings have been cataloguedover the course of 11 sessions, andofficials are hoping the sale can buildfrom last year, when, after 13 sessionsof selling, average was up 11% to$76,511, and the median remainedunchanged at $30,000. There have been some changes for2012. Keeneland has revamped its

website, and the sale itself has a slightly new look, too.Last year, Book 1 was held over two evening sessionsand began on a Sunday. This year, Keeneland pushedthe opener back a day and has set a late-afternoon starttime of 4 p.m. Like last year, however, Book 2 will beheld over three sessions, from Tuesday throughThursday, with a dark day on Friday, Sept. 14.

The format isn=t the only change. For the first time in13 years, Keeneland will be without Nick Nicholson atthe helm. Nicholson retired from his position aspresident and CEO on his 65th birthday Sept. 1,handing the reins to former Vice President and ChiefFinancial Officer Bill Thomason. On Wednesday, Keeneland=s Director of SalesGeoffrey Russell took some time out of his busyschedule to speak with the TDN=s Lucas Marquardtabout the changes at Keeneland September, thesuccess of its graduates and the marketplace ingeneral.

The format for September has been tweaked onceagain for 2012. What was the reasoning behind thechanges?

Russell: The feedback we got from both buyers andsellers over the past couple of years is that they wouldprefer to not have nighttime sessions. From aconsignor=s point of view, to have two night sessionsfollowed by three days of selling meant, for some, fivestraight days of selling without a break. It was difficultfor them and their help. Buyers had concerns, too. Bythe time they got out of a nighttime session it was late, and then to get fed and go home, it was tiring. So wemade the change.Q&A cont.

Any new technological changes?

Russell: Well, we introduced the new website, andthat=s going over well, and we=re in the second year ofthe iPad [sales catalogue application], and that=s beenvery popular. Our downloads are up 30% from lastyear, which is encouraging.

The September Sale is enjoying another strong year, having turned out, among others, GI Kentucky Derbywinner I=ll Have Another, a $11,000 yearling in 2010.

Russell: September grads have actually won five of thelast Triple Crown races, four of the last five Horses ofthe Year came out of September, and on the road tothe Triple Crown this year, our grads were performingat the highest levels. This summer, it=s just continuedon, with the likes of Paynter, Executiveprivilege, and ToHonor and Serve last weekend. We=ve had a great year.

In light of a few yearling sales that have already beenheld thus far in 2012, what are you expecting forSeptember?

Russell: The September Sale is known industry-wide asthe barometer of the industry because of its size andthe different levels of the market it represents, so it=sdifficult to compare it to anything else. But going intoit, we=ve heard positive comments from the sales thathave already taken place, both domestic andinternational, so we=re hoping to build off that. I=d behappy if it was a good, stable market.

We=re in the midst of a contentious election cycle. Haveyou ever observed any trends in buyer behavior inelection years?

Russell: I honestly don=t know the answer to thatquestion. My initial reaction would be that I haven=tseen any changes.

Supply--or oversupply--and demand has been a keyissue in the Thoroughbred business in recent years. Doyou think the current succession of smaller foal crops ishelping match supply with demand?

Russell: Since September of 2008, when the wholeworld changed, breeders and consignors have done avery good job in evaluating their horses; a) which maresshould be bred; and b) which mares are commercial, and if their foals should be offered at public market. Ithink they=ve done a very good job responding towhat=s happening in the marketplace. With productioncosts going down, hopefully they=ll be more profitablein 2012.

This will be the first time in your 11 years asKeeneland=s Director of Sales without Nick Nicholson. How=s the transition been?

Russell: Succession at Keeneland is always as seamlessas our architecture [laughs]. Nick has done atremendous job here, and put together a fabulous team.To have someone with the qualifications and talent ofBill Thomason take over is a compliment to both Billand to Nick himself. Nick did a wonderful job, andfound somebody who he identified as someone withpresidential potential. Bill=s going to do a great job.

SANS FRONTIERES RETIRED Sir Robert Ogden=s 2010 G1 Irish St Leger hero SansFrontieres (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}--Llia {GB}, by ShirleyHeights {GB}) has been retired after suffering arecurrence of his tendon injury, connections announcedyesterday. Not seen since his career-best success in theCurragh contest, the Jeremy Noseda-trained 6-year-oldwas also winner of that year=s G2 Princess of Wales=sS. at Newmarket and the G3 Geoffrey Freer S. atNewbury. AWe have unfortunately had to retire SansFrontieres,@ the owner=s Racing Manager Barry Simpsontold PA Sport. AWe got him very near to a run and hehas been in tremendous form recently and working verywell, but sadly he has damaged his tendon again. Thegood thing is that he is still a colt. He is a triple groupwinner and hopefully he will have some future as apotential stallion. He is wonderfully bred, by Galileo outof a Shirley Heights mare, so he may well appeal to oneor two of the studs. He was 120-rated and neverfulfilled his potential. It was only when he won threeconsecutive group races that he started to show hisability and sadly we have not been able to capitalise onthat. Nevertheless he has been a terrific horse and agreat flagbearer for Sir Robert. He was very lightlyraced, but he had tendon trouble following the Irish StLeger before he was due to go to America for theBreeders= Cup.@

Simpson continued, AWe have brought him backtwice and got near to running both times, but sadly thismorning he damaged his tendon again and therefore wehave no other alternative but to retire him. He has got afuture ahead of him, hopefully.@ In total, the chestnut, who was initially a 450,000gns purchase at Tattersalls, won four of his nine starts and just over ,250,000 inprize money.
