WET WEATHER FOR THURSDAY TRACKWORKEditorial and photos by Liesl King Two days before South Africa's premier race, the G1 Vodacom Durban July, most trackwatchers wereeagerly awaiting that telling final piece of work. Thehorses were ready; it was the culmination of a longcampaign, planned and executed with military precisionby their respective trainers... then the weatherintervened. After weeks of sunshine, with the oddcloud appearing, Thursday morning dawned grey andwet. A cold front had hit the coast overnight and byearly morning, the downpour was steady and constant. Clairwood Racecourse, where most of the favoritesfor the Vodacom Durban July are stabled, wasshrouded in a grey mist as the rain came down in asteady drizzle, with visibility nonexistent. To add to thegeneral dark mood, the going on two of the trainingtracks were found to be too heavy, leaving the beachsand track as the only option for any serious work. First out was the Vaughan Marshall-trained pair ofTribal Dance (SAf) (Tiger Dance) and Hill Fifty Four(SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}). Both horses jumped from the600-meter mark and sprinted up smartly in their finalfast work. Marshall was very pleased with both andwhile he would have liked the talented Hill Fifty Four tocarry less than his allotted 59.5 kgs, he is not overlyconcerned with the weight. Also out in the drizzle and the murky darkness wasDo You Remember (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}), the only filly inthe race. She did a steady half pace, mainly stretching

her legs. Trainer Geoff Woodruffconfirmed that he was just keepingher ticking over, being careful notto ask too much of the diminutivefilly so close to raceday. Next up, the multiple Group 1-winning 3-year-old Capetown Noir(SAf) (Western Winter), made hisappearance under regular race riderKarl Neisius. The near-black coltlooked extremely fit and muscled.Jumping from the 600-meter mark,he sprinted up smartly and washard-held when he reluctantly eased

up at the end of the gallops. This final workout wascertainly very impressive and Neisius and trainer DeanKannemeyer had good reason to smile. Another sterling performance was delivered by theSean Tarry-trained Whiteline Fever (SAf) (RightApproach {GB}). Under the guidance of race riderBernard Fayd'Herbe, Whiteline Fever was a bundle ofrippling muscles and Fayd' Herbe had the gelding undera tight hold before proceeding smoothly through thegears.

Race favorite and 2012 Vodacom Durban July winnerPomodoro (SAf) (Jet Master {SAf}) also churned up thebeach sand. Going a steady half pace over the final 600meters, the colt appeared to be race ready, but seemedto have dropped some weight in the last couple ofweeks, which is concerning. Two of the main challengers, the Justin Snaith duo ofRun for It (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}) and Jet Explorer (SAf)(Jet Master {SAf}), came outjust as the rain finally started toclear. Jet Explorer, partneredby the experienced M JByleveld, appeared overeager andfought his rider all the wayfrom the 600-meter marker.Stable companion Run For Itcame out under his usualworkrider and went through hispaces in a thoroughlyworkmanlike manner. Snaith isa great believer of thecompression suit, made sopopular by Black Caviar, andboth Run For It and Jet Explorer spend some time intheir suits each afternoon. Finally, it was the turn of the Fred Crabbia-ownedAstro News (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}, a recent addition tothe Charles Laird stable. An impressive winner of theG3 Cup Trial over 1800 meters in his last start a monthago, the gelding appeared very fresh and, despite acitation bit, he tested the strength of his rider's armsfighting all the way. It was a similar performance towhat he had delivered during the Vodacom Durban JulyGallops a week ago. This unwillingness to settle couldbe a problem come Saturday, especially if there is noearly pace. Jockey Kevin Shea is likely to have hishands full. The rain has certainly put a dampener on affairs andofficials will be hoping that it clears up overnight. TheGreyville track has already been tested to its limits thisseason, with Durban experiencing one of its wettestwinters ever and while racing will not be cancelled, anyfurther rain could lead to a soft to heavy track comeSaturday.

All in Blue didn't exactly tip his hand with hismorning worktab--he last breezed an easy four furlongsin :49 2/5 over Saratoga=s Oklahoma training track June27--and was let go as the 3-1 third choice in this saltyaffair. With Javier Castellano aboard, the $155,000

FTSAUG yearlinggraduate chased earlywhile parked on theoutside. Meanwhile,Patent (A.P. Indy),favored at 9-5, shot outto the front and set apressured pace throughan opening quarter in:22.43. All in Blue madean impressive sweepingmove to gain commandfrom that one without

being asked rounding the far turn, and dropped thehammer in the stretch to post an easy 6 1/4-lengthvictory over fellow Todd Pletcher first-time starter WeMiss Artie (Artie Schiller). Patent tired to finish a well-beaten sixth. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $42,000. Clickfor the brisnet.com chart, the free brisnet.comcatalogue-style pedigree or VIDEO. O-Starlight Racing. You’re My Boy Blue... Fresh off the heels of Shanghai Bobby (Harlan=sHoliday)=s unbeaten championship season, Jack Wolfand Donald Lucarelli=s Starlight Racing appears lockedand loaded for another run at the prestigioussummer/fall juvenile stakes races if All in Blue (MoreThan Ready)=s impressive debut victory was anyindication.

AHe was the third favorite on the tote board andwasn=t getting much action for a [Todd] Pletcher horse,@said Wolf when reached by phone while driving back to

Starlight=s Saratoga summerbase after attendingThursday=s race at BelmontPark. AI think Todd felt like hisother horse [We Miss Artie]was training better than ours, but as we know, ShanghaiBobby didn=t train that well inthe morning, but showed up inthe afternoons. Hopefully, thisis another horse like that.@ Consigned by Taylor MadeSales Agency as hip 158 atlast year=s Fasig-Tipton Augustsale, All in Blue, the second

foal from the winning 8-year-old Buddha mare Cloud Rise, caught theattention of former trainer turned bloodstock agentFrankie Brothers. AFrankie=s got a tremendous eye and we all like MoreThan Ready as a sire,@ Wolf commented. AI thought thathe looked better than any other horse in the paddock[yesterday]. He=s very well-balanced and very athletic.[rider] Javier [Castellano] was very impressed with howeasy he did it, too. He didn=t have to use the stickcoming down the stretch, and he beat a fairly nicegroup of horses in a very decent time.@ All in Blue has some mighty shoes to fill before beingcompared to previous superstars for Starlight, including the aforementioned Shanghai Bobby, andfellow flashy grays Monba (Maria=s Mon), Octave(Unbridled=s Song) and Take the Points (Even theScore). AIt=s hard for me to get Frankie to buy a gray horse--Ilove these gray horses,@ Wolf added with a laugh.AHe=s been doing this for so long. He deserves all thecredit.@ The Starlight frontman is looking forward to takinganother crack at the popular $100,000 NYRA juvenilebonus, offered to the connections of any 2-year-oldthat breaks its maiden during the Aqueductwinter/spring meeting or the Belmont spring/summermeets and goes on to win a graded stakes at any NYRAtrack in 2013. AWith the $100,000 bonus available that we werelucky enough to get last year with Shanghai Bobby, itsure would be nice to participate in that again,@ Wolfsaid. As for what=s next for All in Blue, Wolf concluded,ATodd=s the one that=s an expert on placing thesehorses. As usual, we=ll see how he comes out of therace and go from there. I=m not sure what else Toddhas in the barn, but I=m sure that if he comes out ofthis one in good order, we=ll probably be looking at [theGII Sanford S. July 21] or one of those other stakesraces later in the meet at Saratoga.@ -Steve Sherack

AThis sale, which covers several differentsegments of the market, from flat-bred 2-year-olds tostore horses and horses in training, was the object of asustained demand as much for the flat as for jumps.@
