STELLAR HOLIDAY WEEKEND AT THE SHORE The Elite Summer Meet at Monmouth Park got off to a fast start, and the brisk business continued through Memorial Day weekend. The on-track handle totaled $2,925,073, up 44 percent from last year, and the total handle was $24,912,191, an eye-catching 122-percent jump from 2009. AThe numbers speak for themselves,@ Monmouth Vice President and General Manager Bob Kulina re- marked, adding with a chuckle, AFive days in, 45 more to go. We were lucky with the weather, and I thought the racing was very strong. I think there was a lot of energy and excitement in the building, and the reaction from across the country in the world of simulcasting was pretty positive.@ On-track, the crowd showed a newfound loyalty to the local product. AWhat we've seen are the guys who might normally come [to Monmouth], but maybe look to bet more on tracks other than us, are now looking at us first and at a sec- ond signal less,@ Kulina explained. AOur field size had made it more attractive, as has the size of the pools. Players want to be able to bet into a large pool and not really change it, and I think that's what happening. Weak in the ante-post markets since a substandard workout at Ballydoyle on Friday, last year's impressive G1 Racing Post Trophy winner and champion juvenile was re- ported to be sore by trainer Aidan O'Brien, who ex- plained in a statement on the Coolmore website, "St Nich- olas Abbey was due to work first thing this morning. However, when he came out of his box, we noticed he was stiff behind. He had looked slightly stiff yesterday evening. His work on Friday last was a little lacklustre for him, and that was the first time we had seen anything different, but he was fine afterwards. Memorial Day Weekend at Monmouth cont.

More for the Money... Bob Kulina cited an example of the value being of-fered on-track in Oceanport--Whoopi Kitten (FusaichiPegasus), owned by Kona Stable, trained by PatrickBiancone and ridden by local hero Joe Bravo, was let goat 11-1 in the sixth race Saturday. AWe had a maidenspecial weight race over the weekend with a 12-horsefield, and the pool [for all wagers] was $1 million. Thewinner was a horse that Bravo rode, was well-intended,and it paid $25.20. That wouldn't have been the casein a six or seven-horse field. We have some big-nametrainers and owners in these races that making for verycompetitive and tough racing, and right now it's reflect-ing in the handle.@

Pick 5 Gets Big Boost... Handle across the board has skyrocketed atMonmouth this summer, but there is one type of wagerthat has surprised track officials with its robust turn-over. AOf all the things that have happened for us atMonmouth, the 50-cent Pick 5 has just been phenome-nal,@ Kulina offered. AThat is hard for me to compre-hend. We have never had any success in New Jerseyhaving a Pick 5, a Pick 6, get to these big pool sizes. Ithink this was the third year [for the 50-cent Pick 5],and it was a nice bet--I think we had a carryover oncewhere the pool was up to $70,000. Well, every day forthe five days [of 2010], the pool has been more than$200,000 [averaging $275,000 a day, according toDaily Racing Form]. And we got very lucky openingday--we had a carryover into the second day of themeet, and the pool was $800,000.@ What has causedthe upsurge in popularity? AI think it's the field size, andthe energy at the track,@ said Kulina. AAnd we're doinga lot of different marketing from the gaming side ofit--we have TVG on site, we're doing something withthe [Daily Racing Form] where they're focusing on thePick 5, and, so far, the racing has been really good.People are looking at it, and when you can get playersto look at these Pick bets, that means they're alsolooking at the races, and so they're saving and coveringand doing all the stuff that the big players do. That, tome, the most incredible thing.@

Keeping Up the Good Work... While the first five days of the meet have been every-thing those involved in the experiment could havehoped for, officials aren=t ready to rest on their laurels. AWe're looking at [the financials], obviously, everyweek, but I think you need to run a meaningful numberof days before you can make a judgement,@ Kulina said.AI don't think you have to go to the end of the season, but you want to get through a couple months--at leastto the Fourth of July. We haven't run any Fridays--whatare they going to look like? Are those days going to getthe Wednesday/Thursday regulars?

AThe big thing will be, at the end of the year, howsuccessful from a financial point of view was it?@ hecontinued. AIs it going to work for us, as well as for thehorsemen? But I do believe it was the only option outthere. And I think it would be great if other tracks wereable to do this at various times of the year. At the endof the day, we're all simulcasting, we're all selling bets, and we all have involvement in phone and internetwagering and OTWs. We need to figure out, as anindustry, how to produce a better product. We're tryingto do it, and we're cautiously optimistic that it's goingto work for us. Right now we're extremely pleased.@ Kulina is also thrilled that the local horsemen, whosigned off on the Elite Summer Meet, have fared. While Rick Dutrow Jr. and Todd Pletcher, two train-ers who have had successful strings at Monmouth forsome years now, are on top of the standings, Jersey conditioners such as Bruce Alexander, Sharon Huston,Terri Pompay, Tim Hills, Joe Orseno, Patricia Farro andAmy Tarrant have been reaping the rewards as well. AWhen we were getting this accomplished, I kepttelling the Jersey guys, you're going to be fine, youguys are going to do really well, you're better than youthink,@ Kulina said. AAnd I think the Jersey guys havebeen holding up well, the Jersey jocks have been win-ning their fair share, and I'm pretty proud of how all ofour horsemen are doing the first five days. I think that=sthe neatest thing that=s happened.@

WHERE’S RACHEL? It has not yet been decidedwhere, but Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra(Medaglia d=Oro) will make her next start June 12,according to a statement sent out by owner Jess Jack-son yesterday. ARachel Alexandra=s condition continuesto improve,@ Jackson said. AWe were impressed withRachel=s Memorial Day work...[and] her next work isMonday, June 7. Assuming she continues to progress,we are considering one of the following June 12 racesfor Rachel=s next preparation: the [GI] Stephen FosterH. [at Churchill], the [GII] Fleur de Lis H. [Churchill], the[GI] Ogden Phipps H. [Belmont] or the [GIII] Obeah S.[Delaware Park]. Our ultimate goal has not changed inscheduling Rachel Alexandra=s campaign this year. Weare getting her back to her fitness level of last year, with the long term hope to race her in the Breeders=Cup this fall.@

Fallon Rides Al Zir... Kieren Fallon will partner J “TDN Rising Star” J Al Zir (Medaglia d'Oro) in Saturday's G1 Investec Derbyat Epsom, it was announced yesterday. Godolphinrevealed the booking after jockey Ahmed Ajtebi wasrequired to partner the Mahmood Al Zarooni-trainedsupplementary entry Buzzword (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) forthe operation in the Classic. "Kieren Fallon's record inthe Derby is excellent," Racing Manager Simon Crisfordcommented. "He was available, and has ridden forGodolphin before."

Cooper in a Quandary... Epsom's Clerk of the Course Andrew Cooper is mull-ing over his options as to whether to water the groundahead of the weekend meeting. "It is just drizzling, andwe have had nowhere near the amount we were fore-cast or hoping for," Cooper explained yesterday. "It isgood ground at the moment, and we have three daysthat look very settled, so we are asking what do we dowith the course. We need to know how much it will drywith no prospect of rain; we could water up to Thurs-day, just to freshen it up and maintain it. I can't see usever watering on the hill on Friday night, but we couldpossibly water the home straight--it's shaping up to beon the fast side of good for the Derby."

MAY MILERS It=s another huge Classic weekend coming up, withthe G1 Epsom Oaks Friday, the G1 Epsom Derby and GI Belmont S. Saturday, and the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club (2100 meters) Sunday. It may be until declarationtime tomorrow before we know which horses AidanO=Brien will be running in which Derby, but with StNicholas Abbey (Montjeu) now out, G3 Gallinule S.winner Jan Vermeer (Montjeu) and G2 DerrinstownDerby Trial winner Midas Touch (Galileo) could leadtheir Epsom team. G2 Dante S. winner Cape Blanco(Galileo) is going either to England or France, and G1 Irish 2000 Guineas third Viscount Nelson (Giant=sCauseway) will be heading to Paris. Prince Khalid Abdullah is to be represented at Epsomby G3 Lingfield Derby Trial winner Bullet Train (Sadler=sWells) and Workforce (King=s Best), and in France, hisG2 Prix Greffulhe winner Ice Blue (Dansili), along withthe Wildensteins= G2 Prix Noailles winner Planteur(Danehill Dancer), will lead the home defense, alongwith G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains (see below) winnerLope de Vega (Shamardal). Godolphin=s top Epsom hopeis Rewilding, from the first British crop by Tiger Hill andout of the remarkable broodmare Darara (Top Ville).Rewilding, then trained by Fabre, was second toPlanteur in the G2 Noailles before being transferred toGodolphin and scorching the opposition in the ListedCocked Hat S. at Goodwood. The only other horsequoted under 20-1 for Epsom is Azmeel, from the firstcrop by the promising middle-distance sire Azamour. Hewas second to Godolphin=s G2 Dante S. flop Chabal(Galileo) in the G3 Sandown Classic Trial before win-ning the G3 Dee S. at Chester. European sires with first three-year-olds (F2007 sires)were very prominent in May=s three one-mile A2000Guineas@ races in England, France and Ireland, thoughthe favorite for Royal Ascot=s G1 St. James=s Palace S.in two weeks= time is likely to be Europe=s top three-year-old miler that is NOT by a first-crop sire. This isCanford Cliffs, by the veteran sire Tagula, a grandsonof Stop the Music. Though beaten by stablemate DickTurpin (Arakan) in both the G3 Greenham S. and the G1 English 2000 Guineas (Dick Turpin second, CanfordCliffs third), Canford Cliffs rebounded with an impres-sive win in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, running an RPR(Racing Post Rating) of 126, highest of any three-year-old in Europe so far this year. As he=s trained inEngland by the venerable Richard Hannon and won lastyear=s G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot, Canford Cliffs islikely to be favored there again over G1 English 2000Guineas winner Makfi (Dubawi), who is trained inFrance by Mikel Dezangles.

Oppenheim cont.

Makfi, of course, is from the first crop by the all-conquering Dubawi, and Dick Turpin is from the firstcrop by Arakan, a Group 3-winning son of Nureyev. The G1 Poule d=Esaai des Poulains was won by Lope deVega, from Shamardal=s first crop. They have all runRPR=s of 120+ this year, signifying that this looks likea good crop of three-year old milers, and once againsetting up the G1 St. James=s Palace S. as the decider;essentially, once again, a European 2000 Guineas. Thefly in the ointment could yet be Coolmore=s Steinbeck, from the first crop by Giant=s Causeway=s sonFootstepsinthesand. Fourth in last year=s G1 DewhurstS. when making only his second start, he was againfourth (RPR 112)--after another interrupted--in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas. Steinbeck has five lengths tomake up on Canford Cliffs, so it=s a tall order, but it=snever out of the question when it=s an Aidan O=Brienthree-year-old making his second start of the year. TheSt. James=s Palace S. is nearly always a very good race, and it looks like it will be again this year. Whereas Europe=s top three-year-old colt milers look agood bunch, the pecking order for Europe=s three-year-old fillies is very murky, much like the pecking order forAmerica=s three-year-old colts, and for much the samereason: relatively low speed figures by Classic stan-dards. The three A1000 Guineas@ races have yieldedeither races with an extreme track bias (G1 English1000 Guineas, in which overnight rain resulted in prob-ably a five-length bias for stands-side runners atNewmarket); or blanket finishes (France and Ireland). Moreover, the nominal crop leader, Special Duty(Hennessy), won both the English and French races viadisqualification--she finished second in both races, yetis the crop=s most accomplished runner so far. No fewerthan 16 three-year-old fillies have run RPR=s between109-115 in the three 1000 Guineas races (see attachedtable). Two of them, G1 English 1000 Guineas seventh(wrong side) Rumoush (Rahy) and G1 Irish 1000 Guin-eas fourth Remember When (Danehill Dancer), areprominently quoted in the betting for Friday=s G1 Ep-som Oaks. Special Duty is on holiday until Deauville, but presum-ably many of the remainder will be tempted to line upfor Royal Ascot=s June 18 G1 Coronation S., whichcould also be called the European 1000 Guineas. Thefour favorites there will likely be disqualified G1 English1000 Guineas winner Jacqueline Quest (Rock of Gibral-tar) and the first three home in the G1 Irish 1000Guineas--Bethrah (Marju), Anna Salai (Dubawi), andMusic Note (Noverre). The first of this weekend=s Classics is Friday=sG1 Epsom Oaks, for which Prince Khalid Abdullah=sG3 Musidora S. winner Aviate (Dansili) is a tepid 4-1favorite over Rumoush (see above), who, before run-ning second to Music Show on the >wrong= side atNewmarket, had defeated colts over nine furlongs in aListed race.

“Goresbridge’s two-year-old sale, though at a lower level, continued the recent theme of improvement in thetwo-year-old market: a remarkable 85 percent of thosecatalogued were listed as sold. Overall, the Europeantwo-year-old sales (one to go, at Baden-Baden) saw a sixpercent rise in the number sold, with a two percent increasein gross from the corresponding sales in 2009, and a fivepercent dip in average. Still, this has been a big growthsegment of the market in recent years: an average of over48,000 euros for 462 sold looks pretty respectable”

Aviate=s trainer, Henry Cecil, who was won the G1 Epsom Oaks, let=s see, eight times, doesn=t seem tostill quite believe Aviate is better than her stablemateTimepiece (Zamindar), also owned by Prince Khalid, andTimepiece is third favorite at 7-1, in spite of beingbeaten in both her starts this year. Aviate=s sire Dansili, who was mentioned in this column a couple of weeksago, could have a huge Classic weekend, as besidesAviate he has Ice Blue as a major contender in Sunday=sG1 Prix du Jockey-Club; Dansili already has 10black-type winners this year. Also around 7-1 for Fri-day=s Oaks is the one-raced impressive maiden winner,Sajjhaa (King=s Best). Remember When (above) isaround 9-1 (these all from Betfair, Monday).

Around 10-1 is Kirsten Rausing=s homebred Hernandofilly, Akdarena, trained by Jim Bolger. She led all theway and blitzed older fillies and mares by six lengths inthe G3 Blue Wind S. at Naas. That will be her out infront Friday. The GI Belmont S., let=s face it, lacks excitement thisyear, but in a funny way it=s quite an interesting race.Often the Belmont is run 10 points slower, in Beyerterms, than the Derby and Preakness, reflecting howfew American horses excel at 12 furlongs on the dirt. But this year, when the crop=s leader, GI Preaknesswinner Lookin at Lucky has a lifetime best Beyer of102, at least the Belmont standard is likely to be closerto the other two Triple Crown races. Four horses, twoof them trained by Nick Zito, look to have the edge inanother closely matched Classic field, and, interest-ingly, three of them hail from the Seattle Slew sire line. The favorite in my book is the Zito-trained GI KentuckyDerby second (Beyer 100) Ice Box, who had won the GIFloriday Derby (99) in his previous start. He=s by Pulpit.Zito also trains the impressive six-length GII Dwyer S.winner (99) Fly Down, by Mineshaft. GI Preaknesssecond (101) First Dude, by yet another son of A.P.Indy, Stephen Got Even, is likely to be the pacesetter.

As a Gregson disciple, of course, I=mrooting for a fairytale win for Alexis; but in theseclosely matched fields just about anything can happen, especially at 12 furlongs. Lookin at Lucky=s trainer, BobBaffert, runs GIII Lone Star Derby winner (95) Game onDude, a gelding by Awesome Again who had previouslybeen a well-beaten seventh behind Ice Box in theGI Florida Derby; and trainer Mike Maker runs StatelyVictor, from the first crop by Awesome Again=s son,Ghostzapper. Q & A WITH THE BREEDERS’ CUP CANDIDATES On May 24, Breeders= Cup announced the 28 candi-

dates who will stand for election to theBreeders= Cup Board of Members andTrustees. There are 13 openings on theBoard. Voting begins June 8 and closesJune 22 at 5 p.m. The bios of the 28candidates are available in documents

circulated to the voters--Breeders= Cup foal and stallionnominators--and the TDN once again will provide addi-tional information on the candidates= viewpoints. Tothat end, we posed the following question to each ofthe candidates, and have given them 400 words orfewer in which to respond. What do you think is the biggest issue facing theBreeders' Cup today and, if voted to the Breeders' Cupboard, how would you propose this issue be solved?

Bret Jones: The biggest issue facing the Breeders= Cup today isthe same issue that is facing our industry as a whole:

Our game is losing relevance inAmerican sports culture. Inthese historically difficulttimes, there is little disagree-ment that the game needs tochange--but without a truecentral governing body, mean-ingful change is overwhelm-ingly difficult to implement. However, in the regrettableabsence of a true centralizedleader, I fully believe that theBreeders= Cup provides our

strongest vehicle to bring about many of these criticallyimportant changes.

Having control of our nation=s most important racesprovides the Breeders= Cup with the leverage to imposerestrictions on their entrants that are long overdue inAmerican racing. This precedent was set in 2008 whenthe Breeders= Cup implemented its ban on anabolicsteroids for the event and outlined the penalties for apositive test--including a lifetime ban from the Breeders=Cup for three-time offenders and a mandate for statesto adopt steroidal bans in order to make their trackseligible to host Breeders= Cup Challenge races. This wasa great step in the right direction and, I believe, signalsthe vast potential for the Breeders= Cup to shape policy. It is no secret that the national perception of ourgame is that not everyone is competing on a level play-ing field. This discourages our much-needed would-befans and stirs resentment in our horseplayers--the truebackbone of our industry. The Breeders= Cup has theinfluence to fight this issue head on and, when suc-cessful, offer a blueprint that should extend to theGraded Stakes Committee and the independent stateracing commissions. The dream of all racehorse ownersis to have their horses compete in our year-end champi-onship and, because of this, the Breeders= Cup has theleverage to ensure that these owners and trainers un-derstand that all eligible horses must play by the sameset of rules. Medication regulation is just one example of thechanges a forward-looking Breeders= Cup can make instriving to regain the national prominence our sportdeserves. As a young person with a lifetime stake inthis game, I feel an obligation to be a part of thesechanges. My generation has come of age in a veryscary time for our industry, and I can promise you, noone is more motivated and willing to work than a youngperson whose entire future is endangered. The Breed-ers= Cup represents a great opportunity for our industryto truly improve our game and, if elected to the Board, Iwill bring a fresh and independent perspective to thiscritically important organization.

Q & A with the BC Candidates cont.

Jerry Crawford: The most important issue facing the Breeders= CupBoard is how we use the bully pulpit to continue tomove the Breeders= Cup forward and bring the Thor-oughbred industry along with it. The Breeders= Cup has taken two positive first steps:

First, the long range planningprocess; second, the move totwo days for the Breeders= Cupas the event continues to growtoward an international festivalof racing. We need to be certainthat the location of this event isfair to horses that race on all sur-faces. I believe the Breeders= Cupneeds to move simultaneouslydown two tracks. The long-termgoal should be an industry that is

fully integrated and learns to speak with one voice. While we move in that direction, the Breeders= Cupshould use its influence to make progress on numerousissues. Specifically, the Breeders= Cup should lead theway in advocating for new technology and marketingideas. We should also advocate for uniform medicationand licensing rules. And, importantly, we should advo-cate for lower takeouts. Making takeout dependent onfield size would be a great start. Currently, racing has the Triple Crown followed by aconfusing five months leading up to our World Seriesevent, the Breeders= Cup. We need to make racing fromJune to November the "regular season" of horse racing, where people can follow the equine athletes, the jock-eys and the trainers so they don't have to start all overat Breeders= Cup time. The Breeders= Cup also needs to be a major presencein Washington D.C. in protecting the Interstate HorseRacing Act while, at the same time, preserving thecurrent depreciation rules that advance the breedingindustry. I would welcome an opportunity to use theexperience and relationships I have developed in sixpresidential campaigns and numerous congressional andgovernors= races to help advance our cause.

We also need to continue to do everything we can toexpand the opportunity for fans to become owners.Partnerships are a great way for people to be intro-duced into the business. Following in the footsteps ofmany partnership pioneers like Dogwood, West Pointand Team Valor, I started Donegal Racing's DerbyDreams in 2008. Keeneland is helping us by the cre-ation of their Ambassadors program to seek out addi-tional owners as well. I am pleased to be a part of thateffort. I would appreciate your support!
