PROSPECTING AT HQ Today's G3 Somverville Tattersall S. at Newmarkethas thrown up Group 1 performers like Aussie Rulesand Milk It Mick (GB) (Millkom {GB}), and one whocould fit that bill on current evidence is Havana Gold(Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). Recently bought into by QatarRacing, his perfect record was marred after RyanMoore's saddle slipped in the closing stages of theListed Prix Francois Boutin at Deauville Aug. 12. Lasttime, he beat the smart Al Waab (Ire) (Danehill Dancer{Ire}) in the Listed Ascendant S. run on firm groundover a mile at Haydock Sept. 8 and, provided hehandles these slower conditions, he sets the standard.Lady Rothschild's fellow Hannon trainee Glean (GB)(Raven's Pass) looked one to keep a close eye on whenscoring on debut at Newbury Aug. 17, but cameunstuck when favorite for a Salisbury conditions eventover a mile last time Sept. 6. "Havana Gold is rated105, so is right up there with the our best 2-year-olds,"Hannon commented. "He would be unbeaten in four butfor his hiccup in France and, though he won on the firmat Haydock last time, he will appreciate this slowerground. Glean won well first time out at Newbury and, though he was then beaten at Salisbury, it was a messythree-runner race and he ran a bit free. He is better thanthat, but he is not one who overdoes himself at home,so we are still learning about him."

A WORLD WITHIN A WORLD WITHIN A WORLD The Keeneland September sale is now in the recordbooks and the dust is settling. How it went pretty muchdepends on who you talk to and their particular realityand agenda or intention to spin. An industry magazine cover proclaimed that it wasARock Steady,@ whatever that means. With fewer horseson offer as a result of industry contraction, the supplyand demand ratio was improved and one sale companyspokesman said, AThe feel of the sale is much betterthan last year.@ Another one said, AIt was anextraordinary sale.@ A major consignor was quoted assaying, AThere is plenty of money for the horses thatbuyers line up on, and for the others it=s a struggle.@One buyer said, AIt=s been tough to buy with everyonelooking down the same hole.@ A foreign buyer remarked,AYou can buy yearlings for a more reasonable price thanfive years ago.@ A long-time major breeder said to me,ADespite a couple of good hits, I got killed again for thefourth straight year. How long can this go on?@ Asmaller breeder said, AThey make a big deal about thedrop in RNAs. They don=t get that we=re so tapped outwe can=t afford to take them home and can=t protectthem.@ It=s a lot to sort out. So my purpose in this article, therefore, is simply to present some fundamental factsand let the readers draw their own conclusions.

The basic picture. In many ways, the AmericanThoroughbred sales scene is a microcosm or reflectionof the broader economy. It is ultimately a function ofcompeting entities that have difficulty cooperating withone another in order to create a system that will Agrowthe whole@ in a way that benefits the entire industryover the long-term. The horse sale world, however, is different from theoutside world in one respect. In the larger economy, therich are making more money and getting richer, and themiddle class and underclass are getting poorer. In thehorse world, the middle class and underclass horsemenare indeed getting poorer, but the wealthier horsemenare simply losing less money than everyone else. Service providers who do not share the costs andrisks of production (such as sale companies, consignors, vets, and agents, etc.) are collectively making about thesame money in 2012 as they did in 2011. Stallionowners in Kentucky who have modestly adjusted theirfees and have had fewer mares to breed are collectivelymaking less money than the previous year.

Commercial breeders, however, are distinct in thatthey collectively are not making money. The factsbelow show that breeders lost well over $100 millionduring the recent September sale. Those breeders who could afford more expensive ormore Acommercial@ stock and obtained placements inthe first three books lost much less than those whowere placed in books four through six. (Yearlings in themuch reduced Book One broke even or were profitableat a 63.6% rate. A 43.6% break-even or profitable ratein Book Two was an improvement compared to recentyears. For those in the underbelly of the sale, however, the break-even or profitable rates were 16.3% in BookFour, 6.7% in Book Five, and 0.9% in Book Six whereover two days only five yearlings made it to a break-even point.) No matter what commercial strata breeders fell into, because of the currently diminished and stagnant salesgross or Achurn,@ each breeder segment wasunprofitable. In addition, many individual breeders havemore than one year=s results to contend with as they tryto absorb cumulative losses that have piled up overseveral years. Those breeders who have wealth outside of theindustry and can use losses to offset other income havesupplementary resources to sustain their efforts, if theychoose to continue participating despite negativeoutcomes. Without a major change in fundamentals, however, many of those who depend on breeding for alivelihood and have no other source of wealth orrevenue will probably disappear, especially if theyoperate with the bank as a partner. Thus, it appearsthat more contraction lies ahead.

The Achurn.@ The churn is the amount of revenuegenerated by the auction process that in turn becomesthe source of money to feed and resupply the system. The Keeneland gross proceeds totals are the bestindicator of the churn that is needed for Thoroughbredbreeders to pay expenses and conduct their breedingactivities going forward. This year=s September Keeneland gross was$219,781,500, down from $223,487,800 in 2011. Therecent total is slightly above the $208 million averagefor the last four years, but is 33% below the 2008revenue when the gross was $327,999,100.Furthermore, last week=s gross which will become theworking churn for 2013 is 47% less than 2006 whenthe gross was $399,791,800. Having 50% less fundingavailable to operate puts perspective on recentcomments that we have Astabilized.@

Stud fees. Total stud fees for yearlings catalogued inthe 2012 sale (bred in 2010) amounted to$126,215,370, based on 2010 advertised prices andincluding 6% sales tax. Stud fees have on average declined during the lastfour years, but not enough to give breeders sufficientrelief, especially as the cost of feed, fuel, and beddinghas risen sharply. Adding in the other expenses required to produce ayearling from conception to auction ring, the sale grossor churn would need to be over $350 million forbreeders to break even. (For a detailed analysis ofyearling production costs and a formula for profitability, please click here for the TDN op/ed of 10/8/2010). The bottom line is that after paying stud fees andsales commissions, a gross of $219,781,500 leavesbreeders with about $75 million in revenue to covermore than $200 million in additional production coststhat was paid out over the previous two and a halfyears. As the breeder quoted above said, AHow long can thisgo on?@

Profitability (or unprofitability) by sale session. Breeders=profitability by catalogue placement and assignedsession are detailed in the Table below. Historical datafor 2008 and 2010 are also included.

Of the total yearlings whose sales price returned thecost of production to their breeders this year, 176 brokeeven (4.8% or one in twenty), and 743 were profitable(20.6% or one in five). Altogether, 2,186 yearlings were unprofitable in2012, not counting 490 Aouts@ which are usually a badstory for their breeders. (Although a few of thewithdrawn yearlings might have been sold privately, most early Aouts@ are typically withdrawn because ofinjury or a veterinary issue, and many late Aouts@ occurbecause the yearling has a problem or attracts no buyerinterest once at the sale). Of the total yearlings who returned the cost ofproduction to their breeders, 176 broke even, and 743(roughly one in five) were profitable.

Final Comment. My purpose in presenting this researchhas been to provide a factual basis for discussing howto develop a framework for growing our overall breedingand sales business, now and in the future. Your ideasand comments are welcome.

TATTS CATALOGUE ASSURES OPTIMISM The strength of last October=s Book 1 sale meantthat, even with 85 fewer yearlings sold than in 2010from a reduced catalogue, turnover still rose from theprevious year=s figure by more than ,3 million to,51,634,000. Despite chairman Edmond Mahony=s claim last yearthat only Aan incurable optimist@could have predicted that levelof trade, his team at Tattersallsis entitled to approach itsflagship sale with optimism asthe over-riding emotion. TheNewmarket sales house hasamassed an embarrassment ofriches to offer from Oct. 9 to 11,with the catalogue up in sizefrom 2011 from 506 to 577.The rise in numbers is carriedthrough to the second week ofthe October Sale, in whichdemand for Book 2 places has seen it extended to fourdays of trade and 1,042 yearlings.

ABook 1 of the October Yearling Sale is alwaysregarded as the premier yearling catalogue in Europe--last year=s was outstanding and this year=s looks tohave almost taken it to a new level,@ Tattersalls=marketing director Jimmy George said. AIt really is avery strong catalogue.@ Among the pages of Book 1 can be found thepedigrees of full or half-siblings to 56 Classic and Group1 winners, including the full-brother to Derby winnerMotivator (GB) and a full-sister to Oaks winner Was(Ire). Yearlings by Sea the Stars (Ire) have alreadytopped Arqana=s August Sale and the SGA Sale inMilan, and at Tattersalls another 30 of his first-cropsons and daughters are on offer, including half-siblingsto G1 Prix du Jockey-Club winner Le Havre (Ire), dualClassic heroine Finsceal Beo (Ire) and St Leger winnerSixties Icon (GB). While the new-boy status of Sea the Stars makes himan intriguing prospect for buyers, his half-brotherGalileo (Ire) carries all before him on the track and in thering. In Book 1 last year, he was the sire of five of thesix top lots, including the sale=s only millionaire, a fillyout of the Irish River (Fr) mare Brigid--whose offspringinclude Meon Valley Stud Fillies= Mile winner Listen (Ire)and Henrythenavigator=s dam Sequoyah, who attained1.7 million guineas. With 42 yearlings catalogued thistime around, Galileo will be hard to beat. Cont. p12

This season, four graduates of the October sale havegone on to claim Classic glory, and in total the sale hasproduced 11 individual Group or Grade I winners of 15races and 60 individual group/listed winners of 77 racesin 2012. They include the outstanding Camelot, whowon the G1 2,000 Guineas, G1 Derby and G1 IrishDerby before failing by just three-quarters of a length tobecome the first Triple Crown winner since Nijinsky II in1970. The Highclere Stud-consigned son of Montjeu(Ire) sold for 525,000gns and few will argue that hewasn=t worth every penny, but George is quick tostress that there is also value to be found at the elitesale.

AThe thing about Book 1 is, yes, it=s established areputation as a source of horses of the likes of Camelotand Was and those that dominate the top end of themarket,@ he explained. ABut equally, it=s a veryconsistent source of Group 1 winners that werepurchased for reasonable money and this year is a casein point. You=ve got Samitar (GB), winner of the IrishG1 1,000 Guineas who cost 39,000gns, Power (GB),who won the G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas and cost50,000gns. It is very much a sale for everyone andthat=s a point we like to stress every year.@ George is also proud of the success of the TattersallsMillions series, which he believes has helped togenerate repeat visits to the buying bench from thoseowners fortunate enough to have landed one of the sixvaluable races.Cont. p13

AIt=s not just the Classic quality, but one has toremember that all 577 of the yearlings in Book 1 areeligible for the Tattersalls Millions, worth a total of ,1.3million,@ George said. APrize-money is such a key issuein British racing at the moment that to have a seriesattached to a sale is crucial to trainers when trying toattract owners.@ AThe profiles of the Millions race winners in the lastfew years have been perfect,@ he continued. AThey havebeen won by a number of horses in the 30,000 to100,000-guineas bracket. Every single one of thoseowners who won a Millions race in 2011 came back tobuy at the 2011 sale. That, for us, speaks volumes. It=sexactly what the Tattersalls Millions series is all about. We want to bring those people back in and give themthe excitement of running for six-figure prize-money,and, in the case of the big Millions races for the coltsand the fillies, half a million and ,300,000. So, theseries is a key part of the success of the sale thatcaters for the middle market, while horses like Camelotand Was show the top owners in the world that this iswhere they can find the best horses year after year.@

Castlemartin Stud Expecting Strong October Lady O=Reilly=s Castlemartin Stud has beenrepresented on the track this season by the G2 MillReef S. winner Moohaajim (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}),whose win on Saturday has put an extra spring in thestep of stud manager James Kelly. The Kildare-basedoperation is taking what Kelly describes as Aour bestdraft ever@ to Tattersalls in early October and the five-strong consignment contains another Cape Cross colt(lot 469) who is bound to garner plenty of interest, being the first foal of the homebred Group 1 winnerChinese White (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}). AShe was as tougha race mare as we=ve ever had and she was carryingthis colt when she won the G1 Pretty Polly S.,@ Kellysaid of the 7-year-old. AHe=s a very athletic mover withgreat bone and Moohaajim has given us all a very timelyreminder of just what Cape Cross can do.@ Chinese White, who was trained by Dermot Weld towin seven races, including the Pretty Polly and G2Blandford S., has a Dubawi (Ire) colt foal at foot and isin foal to Sea the Stars. Her dam, the Sadler=s Wellsmare Chiang Mai (Ire), produced a full-sister to ChineseWhite this year and is back in foal to Dalakhani. Castlemartin sold Joshua Tree (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) for360,000gns at the 2008 October Sale and he has sincewon three group races and will attempt to defend his GI Canadian International S. title at Woodbine again thisfall. His half-brother by Invincible Spirit (Ire) sells as lot96 on the opening day of the October Sale. AIn my opinion, he=s a truly magnificent individual,@Kelly commented. AWe=ve retained his 2-year-old half-sister by Montjeu (Ire), Monaco Mist (Ire), and she wasplaced first time out. Another half-brother, Stencive(GB) (Dansili {GB}), sold for 260,000gns and has runwell all season for William Haggas. He looks like ablack-type horse in the making.@

One of the Castlemartin Stud and Skymarc Farm-bredstars of last season was Lightening Pearl (Ire) (Marju{Ire}), who became the first top-flight winner for SheikhFahad Al-Thani=s Pearl Bloodstock when landing the G1 Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket. Her Amadeus Wolf(GB) half-sister is being offered as lot 44. AShe=s a filly who hasn=t stopped improving in hersales prep and that=s a good sign,@ Kelly said of theyearling. AShe=s a different type to Lightening Pearl--more like her other half-sister, Jolie Jioconde (Ire), whowas group-placed. She looks the type who might need[to race over] a mile at two.@ Another first foal among the draft is that of BeachBunny (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), who was beaten justa short-head by Dar Re Mi (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) in the2009 Pretty Polly S. Her firstborn is by Oasis Dream(GB) (lot 419) and closely resembles his sire, accordingto Kelly. AWe think he=s a star and we think he=ll beamong the sales-toppers,@ Kelly said confidently.AWe=ve had a lot of English agents here at the farmlooking at him and they agree that=s he=s exceptional,@he said. AHe=s extremely correct, a solid walker and very goodon the lunge. If every first foal was like him, it wouldmake life a lot easier.@ Last but by no means least among the Castlemartinquintet is a High Chaparral colt out of the Group 3winner and black-type producer Right Key (Ire) (Key ofLuck), catalogued as lot 222. AHe=d be a standout Book 2 horse but, in the wordsof Edmond Mahony, he walked hisway into Book 1,@ attested Kelly, who is hoping that the colt=s 2-year-old half-sister by Dalakhani, named Riviera Rose (Ire) and intraining with Kevin Prendergast, will be ready to run in the week ofthe sale. AHe=s a big tall horse, butvery athletic and the best walkerof our draft. He=s a good prospectfor someone looking for a nice middle-distance horse.@ There=s clearly great confidence behind the stud=sselect consignment going into the sale, with individualsowning physiques to match their classy pedigrees. AI=ve been telling my boss that these are the bestyearlings we=ve consigned for a long time,@ said Kelly.

A Classic October for Voute Sales The Voute Sales consignment, with its yellow-bedecked handlers and floral decorations, is hard tomiss at Park Paddocks, but this year=s Book 1 draft issmaller than in recent years. Like allMontjeus, he=s thrived in his preparation and, withouttempting fate, I hope he=ll sellvery well.@ Also in Voute=s consignmentfrom Deerfield is a Raven=s Passcolt out of Motivator=s unracedfull-sister Sunspear (Ire) (lot290). AI sold [listed winner] Steeler(Ire) last year, who is also byRaven=s Pass. Mark Johnstonsays he=s the best 2-year-old hehas and this one is very similarto him,@ Voute commented. While Deerfield Farm is a newclient, Voute is also consigning afull-sister to another Classicwinner, Roderic O=Connor (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}), (lot 242) on behalfof the Sangster family, with whom he has had linkssince he started out 25 years ago. AI sold the full-sister last year for 340,000gns,@ hesaid. AThis is a May foal, very good looking, andobviously it=s that wonderful Galileo-Danehill cross. I=mvery lucky to be selling two siblings to Classic winners.I sold a horse for Robert Sangster in my first yearconsigning and the family has supported me every year.@ A regular visitor to American sales, Voute isespecially pleased to be consigning an American-bredthree-parts-sister to GI Spinster S. winner Asi Siempre.By Artie Schiller, a son of Asi Siempre=s sire El Prado(Ire), the April-foaled filly is consigned on behalf ofHernandez Font, who owns West Stow Stud in Suffolk. AI=ve always liked to sell American-breds and I amproud of my record with horses such as RussianRhythm and Shamardal,@ said Voute, who also sold theStormy Atlantic filly Ollie Olga at last year=s Octobersale for 42,000gns. She is now unbeaten in threestarts, most recently the G3 Prestige S. at Goodwood.

AIn recent years, there=s been this attitude againstAmerican horses, but we=ve gone over there andpersuaded people to come over with their horses andthey=ve done well.@ Despite the prospect of an elite draft, Voute admitsto a familiar feeling of trepidation as he approaches theAmost exciting sale of the year.@ ATattersalls have done a great job in the last five to10 years in attracting more and more internationalbuyers and that=s crucial,@ he said. AWe don=t want theMaktoums to disappear in any shape or form, but it=svery heartening that we have such a strong buyingbench and I=m keeping my fingers crossed that theJapanese interest and participation will be as strong asit was in Keeneland. You never know how it will beuntil you actually get there, but the interest at the farmhas been much higher than normal, so let=s hope thatcontinues at Tattersalls.@

Clairemont Stud Debuts Nestled among the many familiar names on the list ofconsignors is one that will be new to most people--Clairemont Stud. The faces behind theoperation are familiar ones, however, with the experienced hands of Liam andJenny Norris having teamed up withMartin and Lee Taylor, owners of the2011 Oaks winner Dancing Rain (Ire)(Danehill Dancer {Ire}), to buy theHampshire-based stud. Liam Norris, along with regular salespartner William Huntingdon, bought thedaughter of Danehill Dancer for theTaylor brothers for i200,000 at Goffsand she will retire to Clairemont whenher racing days are over. She willdoubtless be the star package among the growing bandof broodmares now residing at the converted sheepfarm which was bought in March. AThe QIPCO Fillies and Mares S. on Champions= Dayis the plan for Dancing Rain, but she will eventuallycome to the farm,@ said Norris, who has recently beenrenting land from Lady Rothschild in Pewsey whilework is completed at Clairemont. AThese are exciting times for us,@ he said. AIt=s ourfirst time consigning anywhere, but I=m really proud ofthe six fillies we will be presenting as the firstClairemont Stud draft. As individuals I=m really thrilledwith them.@ First to go through the ring will be Onereuse (GB)(Sanglamore)=s High Chaparral (Ire) filly (lot 170), a half-sister to the G1 Prix Saint-Alary winner Fidelite (Ire) (InThe Wings {Ire}). AShe=s an absolute beauty and should appeal tobreeders,@ Norris said. AI=ve tried to select some qualityyearlings by proven sires. The sires speak forthemselves really and I hope the yearlings will do thesame.@ Cont. p16

With the other five offerings being by Galileo (Ire),Danehill Dancer (Ire), Exceed and Excel (Aus), Teofilo(Ire) and Azamour (Ire), few will find fault with the tophalf of their pedigrees and there=s plenty underneath torecommend them. The Galileo filly (lot 456) is anotherbred on the proven cross with Danehill--this one out ofCastara Beach (Ire), who has already produced Group 3winner Steinbeck (Ire) (Footsepsinthesand {GB}) andhails from the family of Nannina (GB) (Medicean {GB})and Hong Kong star Indigenous (Ire) (Marju {Ire}). Norris has an understandable fondness for daughtersof Danehill Dancer and is delighted to be consigning anApril-foaled filly out of the Royal Academy mare SingingDiva (Ire), whose extended family includes Classicwinners Dubawi (Ire), High-Rise (Ire) and Virginia Waters. It will be a busy week for Norris, who will also beengaged at Tattersalls in his more familiar role as agent. But, as they say, behind every good man, there=s aneven better woman and Liam will be relying on his wifeJenny to front the Clairemont draft. AJenny=s really experienced and has worked for theIrish National Stud and Heatherwold Stud amongothers,@ he said. AI think she=d rather I left it to heranyway, but she hasn=t got many nails left at themoment!@

First Up for Coulonces Anna and Etienne Drion=s Coulonces consignment has

quickly made a name for itself inFrance and the couple, who ownHaras du Grand Chene inNormandy, are sending a draft toTattersalls for the first time thisOctober. Star billing among the fiveyearlings has to go to lot 107,not just because he=s a half-brother to Classic winner LeHavre, whom Anna bred in

partnership with her parents Jan and Maja Sundstrom(who breed under the name Team Hogdala), but alsobecause he is by this season=s most exciting freshmanSea the Stars. AThis has been a dream for me tosell horses at Newmarket, but upuntil now we haven=t had the rightones,@ says Anna Drion, whosettled in France from her nativeSweden with her parents eightyears ago. AThis year, my parentsthought they would like to sell atTattersalls, so we had a long talkabout it and decided to try it. Thena few other people asked us to consign horses forthem. Now I=m getting pretty nervous and the sleeplessnights are starting, but we=re going there with five nicehorses--a good number--and they are not competingagainst each other, they have very different pedigrees.@

Coulonces is also selling the only yearling by TurtleBowl (Ire) in the catalogue (lot 527). The statuesqueson of Dyhim Diamond (Ire), who stands at Haras de laReboursiPre et de Montaigu, has solid claims to beingthe best-looking stallion in France and has made asplash with his debutants (now 3-year-olds). From alimited first book, he has sired the G1 Poule d=Essai desPoulains winner Lucayan (Fr) and G1 CriteriumInternational winner and 2,000 Guineas runner-upFrench Fifteen (Fr). The Coulonces-offered colt byTurtle Bowl is a half-brother tothe oddly named fillyTestosterone (Ire) (Dansili {GB}),a dual group winner in Franceout of the listed-placed Sadler=sWells mare Epopee (Ire).Fastnet Rock (Aus) (Danehill)was recently crowned Australia=schampion sire for the first timeand, following some solid returnsfor his yearlings in Deauville, hopes are high that theeight offered in Book 1 will be similarly in demand.Selling on behalf of Robert Jeffock=s Haras de Guergue, the Coulonces consignment offers a filly out of anunraced half-sister to the German champion older horseSilvano (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}), who is already namedMiss Rocky (lot 251). ARobert Jeffcock is very local to us--just five minutesaway,@ Drion said. AHe has converted a stud farm and isbuying mares with really nice pedigrees. He bought thisfilly as a foal and wanted to resell. She=s a beautiful fillyand we=re delighted to be selling her for Haras deGuergue.@ The Drions are also grateful for a very nice update fortheir Henrythenavigator colt (lot 263). Out of SilverBark (GB), a full sister to Grade Iwinner Ticker Tape (GB) (RoyalApplause {GB}), and by a hotyoung sire, there=s plenty to likeabout the page already, butanother half-sister to the dam,Sant Elena (GB), is responsiblefor this season=s crack European2-year-old Reckless Abandon(GB) (Exchange Rate), who isunbeaten in four starts, with hisG1 Prix Morny victory coming after the catalogue wasprinted. ATo have such a major update is fantastic and he=s agorgeous yearling,@ said Drion, adding, ALike all fourcolts in our draft, he is eligible for French premiums.@

ILLINOIS BOARD SHIFTS DARK-DAY REVENUEDuring its annual racing dates award meeting, theIllinois Racing Board approved the 2013 live racingschedule in Chicago Tuesday. After a day-long session, the motion was finally carried on a 6-2 vote. Amongthe biggest and most hotly contested issues on theagenda was the division of >dark day= simulcastingrevenue. When all was said and done, Hawthorne willbenefit from an additional 19 days of dark daysimulcast wagering, which translates into about$800,000 in purse revenue and $430,000 incommissions for the struggling track. Arlington Park, which in recent times has held a monopoly on Januaryand early February simulcast days, will host 90 darkdays in 2013, down from 107 in 2012. An initialproposal which would have cut Arlington=s dark-dayrevenue by two weeks (running from Jan. 1 throughJan. 31), with Hawthorne operating from Feb. 1 to Feb. 14, was not passed after voting ended in a 4-4 tie.Beginning Feb. 15, Hawthorne offers two live racingdays through the remainder of that month and isincreased to four days in March. The Arlington meetruns four days a week from May 1 to Sept. 30.

Alertly away, Guilt Trip stalked the earlypace of the returning Tuckers Point (Birdstone) and theduo separated themselves from the rest of the field. The West runner poked a head in front at themidstretch marker and outlasted his stubborn rival by aneck. At the end of the two-daySale, the average and median of i11,670 and i9,500represented increases of 7 and 19%, respectively, onlast year, while the clearance rate stood at 87%.Consigned by Torard House Stud, hip 414 is out ofClever Day (Action This Day), a half-sister to stakeswinner and Grade III-placed Mavoreen (Sir Cat), andwas knocked down to Pauline Marterer of EmeraldBloodstock on behalf of the Chantilly-based trainer UrsSuter. AMr. Suter had picked out this horse and really likedhim, but had to leave before he sold,@ Martererexplained after outlasting trainer Ger Lyons and agentPeter Doyle. Suter had earlier purchased three yearlings, including a duo also by Bushranger.

Another first-crop sire who made a splash yesterdaywas Mastercraftsman (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}),whose colt from the Castlebridge Consignment fetchedi55,000. Hip 356 is a February-foaled grandson ofgroup scorer Hatton Gardens (Ire) (Auction Ring), later aproven producer of the likes of South African championKundalini (El Gran Senor). Armando Duarte signed forthe chestnut. AHe is for an existing client and a trainer has yet to bedecided,@ Duarte offered. AThe client is planning onbuying a few yearlings, they will go out into the fieldfor a couple of months and then he will decide upontrainers. This looks a real 2-year-old, is byMastercraftsman who was a good 2-year-old, and wepaid a bit more than we had thought we would have to,but nice horses are costing money.@ Also selling for i55,000 was another by a sirewhose yearlings are hitting the sales rings for the firsttime. Redmondstown Stud=s hip 411 is by IntenseFocus (Giant=s Causeway) and was the subject of themost significant update in the catalogue, with hishalf-brother Leitir Mor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire})bagging the G3 Round Tower S. and finishing runner-upin the G1 Phoenix S. and third in the G1 VincentO'Brien National S. Trainer J T Gorman was the nameon the docket for the February-foaled bay. Later on, trainer Alduino Botti was on hand to payi44,000 for Egmont Stud=s hip 465, the sole offeringby Exceed and Excel (Aus) in the book. The March-foaled colt is out of a sister to listed winner Handassa(GB) from the family of Pastoral Pursuits (GB). That sirehad been responsible for the opening session=s topper, and it was one of his daughters who enjoyed thelimelight yesterday when selling to Peter and RossDoyle Bloodstock for i33,000. From the draft ofBaroda and Colbinstown Studs, hip 337 is from theimmediate family of the smart Japanese performer GrabYour Heart (Deputy Commander).
