With significant rain an almost inevitability, John Deer=s Al Kazeem (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is firmly in the mix for a race he looked set to swerve as late as mid-week, while connections of Declaration of War (War Front) and The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}) are praying it arrives in moderation. Al Kazeem has a 2 3/4-length deficit to make up on Declaration of War from the G1 Juddmonte International at a sun-baked York 17 days ago, but trainer Roger Charlton has always maintained that easier ground will mean a better performer. AAl Kazeem left Beckhampton at 8 a.m. this morning to start his long journey to Ireland in the hope that there will be some rain at Leopardstown before racing tomorrow evening,@ Charlton said yesterday. AThe weather forecast seems to change by the hour, and there is a wide range of opinions as to how much they will get. The gun is loaded, so fingers crossed yet again.@ While the surface was fast when the 5-year-old took the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh May 26, the G1 Prince of Wales=s S. at Royal Ascot June 19 and G1 Eclipse at Sandown July 6, his York effort may have been one too many on unsuitably quick ground, and he shortened stride late to allow the G1 Irish Derby hero and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. runner-up Trading Leather (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) back past and into second. Aidan O=Brien has won a record seven renewals of this race, and Declaration of War holds strong credentials if the weather is not as dramatic as forecast, but on no worse than yielding Joseph Allen=s homebred will still be a force to be reckoned with. He has form on soft ground at a lower level, but his best efforts have come on a sound surface. Also from Ballydoyle is the intriguing Kingsbarns (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who brings an unbeaten record into play despite not being seen since winning the G1 Racing Post Trophy on the soft going at Doncaster in late October. Long held in high regard, he will be helped by wet conditions and remains totally unexposed and an unknown quantity. Lord Lloyd- Webber=s The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}) had her ideal fast ground when registering an authoritative success in the 12-furlong G1 Yorkshire Oaks at the Ebor meeting 16 days ago and trainer John Gosden is facing a nervous time in the build-up. AShe=s very well, but obviously we are watching verycarefully what happens with the weather,@ Gosden toldPA Sport about The Fugue. AObviously, we would bevery concerned if it rains but things are changing all thetime.@ Leopardstown=s Racing and Operations ManagerNessa Joyce gave the latest update yesterday

afternoon. AWe had anisolated showerovernight, which was abit of a surprise andgave us four millimetersof rain,@ she explained.AWe=re calling theground good-to-firm allround at the momentand we=ll just have tosee what happens laterin the day. It=s the greatunknown. I think the

heaviest of the rain is going to be in the middle of thenight and the latest forecast suggests we could getanything between 10 and 20 millimeters. The goodthing is it sounds like by the morning we=ll hopefullyhave had the worst of the rain, so we should have agood idea where we stand. The worst-case scenario isthat it rains throughout the day, but it is very hard topredict. Hopefully, it is going to be more showery thanpersistent rain. There is a crazy outside chance wewon=t get any rain at all, so we=re just going to have tomonitor things very closely.@

FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH Whatever the weather, sprinters at the peak of theirdivision either have deadly speed or not, and LethalForce (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) bids to flaunt his rawprowess in that department in today=s G1 HaydockSprint Cup. Only Moonlight Cloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit{Ire}) has been able to rain on his parade this summer, but his latest second to that stellar performer in theAug. 4 G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at her belovedDeauville stands up to the closest inspection.Previously, the Cheveley Park Stud signing had inflictedtwo comfortable defeats on last year=s Haydock heroSociety Rock (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) in the June 22 G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot and G1 July Cup at Newmarket July 13, and the onlyconcern for trainer Clive Cox is the threat of more rainturning the ground extremely testing. ALethal Force is inexcellent form and I really hope conditions are suitablefor him,@ he told PA Sport. AI couldn=t be happier withhim. He=s in great nick and obviously he has alreadyproved this year that he=s at the top of his game. Hecame back very well indeed from a very good race inFrance, and [Moonlight Cloud] is a very special filly. With her being on home territory, it was a tough nut tocrack and it was a course record. Adam [Kirby] knowsour horse really well, and his impression on the day wasthat he probably wasn=t quite as sharp as he was forthe July Cup run.@ One who will benefit from thesignificant easing in conditions yesterday is the Irishraider Gordon Lord Byron (Ire) (Byron {GB}), whoreturns to the scene of his second placing 12 monthsago. He was only 3/4 of a length behind Lethal Forcewhen third in the Maurice de Gheest, and if it getsheavy, he will be in his element, as he was last year onArc day when capturing the G1 Prix de la Foret atLongchamp. His latest success came in a weak renewalof the G3 Desmond S. over a mile at LeopardstownAug. 15. Conditioner Tom Hogan told PA Sport, AHearrived over there Thursday night and was out on thetrack on Friday morning. He=s in very good order. Therain is fine, but a drop was needed as it would havebeen very quick if they didn=t get a drop. Last year, wethought we were drawn on the side with pace and itdidn=t work out like that. Hopefully, this year we willbe. We were catching Lethal Force in Deauville the lastday we met, so hopefully there will be a good pace andwe might get by him one of these days.@ If Lethal Forceunderperforms, Cheveley Park Stud could still collectwith the 3-year-old they own in partnership with DavidArmstrong, Garswood (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}). He beathis elders over seven furlongs in the G2 Lennox S. atGlorious Goodwood last time July 30, and will alsobenefit from a softening surface. AThe more rain, thebetter to slow the others down a bit because we=redropping him back in trip,@ trainer Richard Fahey toldPA Sport. AHe=s in great form and we=re delighted withhim. He goes there in top shape. We switched him offthis year to try to get a mile and he has won overseven.@

OPEN HOUSE With no stand-out performer in the line-up for today=sG1 Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Matron S. atLeopardstown, the way is clear for an improver to stepforward, and one who fits that bill is Kieran Leavy,Lorcan Cribbin and Amanda McCreery=s supplementedtriple pattern-race scorer Fiesolana (Ire) (Aussie Rules).Having already annexed this track=s G3 Ballyogan S.over six furlongs June 13, the 4-year-old showed thatextra distance held no fears when adding the G3 Brownstown S. and G3 Fairy Bridge S. to her tallyat Fairyhouse July 3 and Tipperary Aug. 22. On thelatter occasion, she gave the high-class Sea Siren (Aus)(Fastnet Rock {Aus}) five pounds and a decisive 1 1/4-length beating over just 120 yards shy of this tripdespite being reportedly short of peak fitness. AShe=s ingreat form--she came out of her race at Tipperary verywell,@ trainer Willie McCreery said. AWe=re clutching atstraws a little bit, but she deserves to be there havingwon three Group 3s this year. Her wins this year haveall been on watered ground, but I don=t know if sheneeds a bit of cut in the ground. She has a very highcruising speed and she=s able to quicken off it andsaves a little bit for herself when she hits the front aswell. All she has done is progress and she=s answeredeverything we=ve asked. She has a good draw, is verystraightforward in her races and the mile shouldn=t be aproblem.@ If Ibrahim Araci=s Chigun (GB) (Oasis Dream{GB}) can revisit the form of her impressive win in TheCurragh=s G3 Ridgewood Pearl S. over this trip May 25,she could play a leading role, but she has to reboundfrom two unplaced efforts on contrasting groundconditions in the G2 Duke of Cambridge S. at RoyalAscot June 19 and G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville July28. AThe ground is probably irrelevant for her, as longas it=s not extreme either way,@ the owner=s RacingManager Rob Speers told PA Sport. AShe wouldn=t wantit very quick or too heavy. I think with Elusive Kate notrunning, it=s a very open race. There are probably half adozen fillies in there with a genuine chance andhopefully we=re one of them.@ Visiting from France isGuy Pariente=s Kenhope (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), whoproved that her second in the G1 Coronation S. atRoyal Ascot June 21 was no fluke when third in theRothschild. Her trainer Henri-Alex Pantall took this in1997 with Clerio (GB) (Soviet Star) when it was aGroup 3 staged at The Curragh. His assistant LudovecGadben told PA Sport, AShe has recovered very wellfrom her last race at Deauville and she traveled well toIreland and arrived Thursday morning. Everything isgoing in a good way for the filly. It was good news forus that Elusive Kate does not run. She is a tough fillyand has been running well all year at a high level, so wethink she should run very well. Any rain would be goodnews for her. She goes on all ground, but she is betterif it is somewhere between good and heavy. She hasrun well on all types of racecourses, so the track won=tbe a problem for her.@ Field p6

SEEKING PREY As exciting a prospect as has raced in the black, white and a red of Moyglare Stud Farm in recent years,J “TDN Rising Star” J Free Eagle (Ire) (HighChaparral {Ire}) takes the next step up the ladder in astrong-looking renewal of the G3 ICON Breeders= CupJuvenile Turf Trial S. at Leopardstown. So impressiveover this track and trip on debut when accounting forthe impressive subsequent winner Orchestra (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}) by 5 1/2 lengths, the Dermot Weldtrainee will be tested by a select bunch of smartjuveniles, including Jim Bolger=s Wexford Town (Ire)(Teofilo {Ire}) and Ballydoyle=s Kingfisher (Ire) (Galileo{Ire}), who were nearly seven and eight lengths behindhim when third and fourth, respectively, on debut. Thelatter has since scored by nine lengths in a Killarneymaiden over 100 yards further 10 days ago, but it issignificant that Joseph O=Brien prefers his stablecompanion Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). Already a millionaire in just seven career starts,Departing went two-for-three over the winter, the loneblemish being a third behind the more-seasonedRevolutionary (War Pass) in the GII Louisiana Derby. Hetried the GI Preakness S. off a blowout score in the GIII Illinois Derby, but was never a real threat whensixth to Oxbow (Awesome Again). He exits a facile 8 3/4-length defeat of Ruler of Love (Peace Rules) inthe GII West Virginia Derby Aug. 3, and it=s difficult toenvision anything but a winning effort at prohibitivelyshort odds. Cameo Appearance (Majestic Warrior) triestwo turns and the main track for the first time in whathas shaped as a promising start to his career.Impressive in winning his first two Arlington tries fortrainer Wayne Catalano, the homebred was void ofexcuses when third in the one-mile Straight Line S. onthe Arlington Million undercard Aug. 17. Pat Valenzuelais in from California to ride. Cameo Appearance is partof an uncoupled entry with the under-achievingTreasury Bill (Lemon Drop Kid), who remains eligible foran entry-level allowance. The progressive HolidayMischief (Into Mischief), runner-up to Departing in theTexas Heritage S. Mar. 2, belied odds of 16-1 whenwearing down Stall trainee Sunbean (Brahms) in theAug. 3 Prelude S. Further improvement can see himfactor in the finish.

BOISTEROUS OUT TO MAKE AMENDS Exiting one of the more disappointing efforts of hiscareer, Phipps Stable= Boisterous (Distorted Humor) willlook to re-start what has been an otherwise successfulseason in today= GII Bowling Green H. on opening dayof the fall championship meet at Belmont Park. Awinner of six of nine tries over this turf course, the 6-year-old was runner-up to loose-on-the-leadSuccessful Dan (Successful Appeal) in the GII Ben Ali S.over the Keeneland Poly Apr. 21, but returned to theinfield to land the GII Monmouth S. June 9 before afirst top-level success in the Man O=War S. here July13. Instead of cutting back to 10 furlongs for the GI Arlington Million, a race in which he flopped in2012, Boisterous instead stretched out to a mile andfour panels for the GI Sword Dancer Invitational Aug. 17, but was brutally wide on the final turn and didnot see out the trip, finishing eighth to Big Blue Kitten(Kitten=s Joy). He=ll drop back in distance for this and isstrictly the one to down. Cont. p10

"I decided [the day after the Sword Dancer] to run inthe Bowling Green," McGaughey said of Boisterous. "Ibrought him back to Belmont, and he seems to bedoing fine. He didn't run any good in the 2011 SwordDancer or last year's Arlington Million, so I hope he justdidn't like training at Saratoga. He always runs well inthe fall." London Lane (Langfuhr) enters this in arguablycareer form, and while it=ll take his very best to win it,he could crash the exacta. The chestnut came with abarnstorming run down the center of the ColonialDowns turf for a $102 upset over Hyper (VictoryGallop) in the GII Colonial Turf Cup June 22, andthough he only split the field in the Sword Dancer, hisjockey that day may have gone too soon. Jose Ortiz, fresh off his win in the GI Hopeful S., takes over at thecontrols.

‘STRIKE’ WHILE THE IRON IS HOT Trainer Todd Pletcher walked away with yet anothertitle at the just-concluded meet at Saratoga, and thoughStonestreet Stables= homebred Elena Strikes (SmartStrike) did not account for any of the barn=s 36winners, she is the pick in tonight=s GII Pocahonta S., aAWin and You=re In@ event for the GI Breeders= CupJuvenile Fillies. A popular debut winner at MonmouthJune 22, the half to GISW Runway Model (Petionville)was third in the GIII Schuylerville S. July 19, but ranlike a horse who would appreciate added distance. Notonly does she get that this evening, but she should betracking what figures to be a generous pace.Stonetastic (Mizzen Mast) could be the speed of thespeed and brings jockey Joe Bravo with her for trainerKelly Breen. The grey scored by 12 1/2 lengths in herAug. 10 bow at the Jersey Shore, clocking a smart1:04.45, blew out strongly for this and should beprominent from the outset. If the expected quick pacedevelops up front, Nevada Deputy (Pollard=s Vision) is acandidate to hit the board or slightly better. Though shedidn=t show a great deal debuting over the main track atLone Star June 29, she does have two-turn experienceand was probably best last time in the grassy WilhiteMemorial S. at Louisiana Downs. They could have goneback there for a 100-grander today, but elect to stayhere, and the filly worked very well over the local maintrack two weeks back.

IROQUOIS A REAL MELTING POT An interesting collection of 12 juveniles is set to facethe starter in tonight=s GIII Iroquois S., with the winnerto receive an all-dues-paid trip to California for the GIBreeders= Cup Juvenile. They=ve come from all over torun, as five of the contestants made their most recentappearance at cross-commonwealth Ellis Park, whileothers are shipping in from Parx, Monmouth andSaratoga. Ride On Curlin (Curlin) has been made the 5-2morning-line favorite, and deservedly so off a visuallyimpressive 7 3/4-length success in a 5 1/2-furlongmaiden at the Peapatch July 13. Prior to that, he triedthis surface and overcame a sluggish start to round outthe exacta underneath the well-regarded andsubsequently stakes-placed Conquest Two Step (TwoStep Salsa) June 21. Though he led throughout lasttime, he didn=t go all that hard up front and could findhimself outrun in the early going here. Tapiture (Tapit)remains a maiden after just a single racetrackappearance, but that runner-up effort at Saratoga Aug.17 looks pretty imposing. The winner that day, StrongMandate (Tiznow) came back to romp in the GI HopefulS. last weekend, and the Winchell homebred could bethis good.

There was nothing particularly sexy about the debutwin from Cash Is King LLC=s Honorable Judge (AfleetAlex), but he ships in here with longshot claims fromthe Keystone State. The bay debuted over a mile Aug. 11, settling worse than midfield before rompinghome by nearly seven lengths. He should get more paceto run at this time and if pedigree angles are your thing, his full-brother Afleet Again won the GII Breeders= CupMarathon at this track in 2011.

KATIERICH FARMS ON THE RISE Larry Doyle=s KatieRich Farms, in operation for onlyfive years, will send seven yearlings through theKeeneland sales ring during Book 1 of the Septembersale and a further nine will follow during the sale=ssecond week. This will mark KatieRich=s thirdSeptember consignment and the farm enjoyed somestrong results in 2012. Doyle is chairman and CEO of the real estateinvestment management company Katierich Asset

Management LLC and previouslyserved as chairman of KineticsAsset Management, which he co-founded. He traces his interest inhorse racing to his high school daysgrowing up not far from BelmontPark. AI=ve been interested inhorseracing since high school--sothat=s a long time ago,@ Doylelaughed. AI lived not far fromBelmont Park and we used to

hitchhike to the racetrack and blow any money we hadearned that summer.@

Doyle dabbled in racehorse ownership for a fewyears, but began getting more involved in 2000 as hisbusiness interests expanded. AInitially, my trainer, Mark Hubley, called me up andsaid, >What do you think of this?= and we went in andwe had a little success and it was very exciting,@ Doyleexplained. ABack then I wasn=t as established as I laterbecame in my other business, so when I came into alittle more money, I called him up and said, >Let=s go doit for real.=@ Doyle=s initial focus was on buying yearling fillies with

an eye towards building abroodmare band. Among hisearly purchases was MissMary Apples (Clever Trick),who was a $37,000Keeneland Septemberpurchase in 2001. The fillywent on to run second in the2002 GII Schuylerville S.before producing stakeswinners Miss Red Delicious(Empire Maker) and Dr.Diamond Prize (Pure Prize). Healso campaigned multiple

graded stakes placed Your Round (Distorted Humor). In 2008, Doyle purchased a 330-acre farm in Midwayto house his burgeoning broodmare band. NamedKatieRich after his two children, the farm is managedby Hubley. AAt that stage of the game, I had a bunch ofbroodmares at various differentlocations, so at that time I startedlooking for a farm,@ he said. AIprobably wasn=t looking foranything quite as big as what I got,but back in 2008, that was the onlyone available.@ The KatieRich broodmare bandcurrently numbers about 30 headand Doyle said he is always lookingto increase quality, if not quantity.KatieRich is primarily a commercialbreeding operation.Cont. p14

Keeneland September--KatieRich cont.

AI breed primarily to sell, but I race what I can=t sell,@Doyle said. AThat=s why I think I have the best trainer incentral Kentucky because Mark Hubley has a 24% winratio with horses that no one else will take.@ In addition to Hubley, Doyle credits TammyIngebritson with the operation=s success. AI rely on Mark Hubley and Tammy Ingebritson, whobasically runs the broodmare band and everything atthe farm,@ he explained. AI=m very fortunate that I cantrust them and they can handle everything. MOREIRA MAKES HISTORY AT KRANJI Three-time Singapore champion jockey Joao Moreira

completed a historic feat at Kranjiyesterday when he rode eightwinners from as many mounts. Indoing so, the Brazilian-born riderbested the previous Singaporerecord of seven winners on acard, set by jockey SaimeeJumaat in 2009. Moreira won the first four raceson the card aboard Silent Power(Aus), Hanks (NZ), Zac Spirit(Aus) and Mr Magnus (Aus) beforebeing forced to sit out the fifth,an event restricted to apprenticeriders.

He picked up right where he left off with a trio ofwins aboard Alan (NZ), Cash Luck (Aus) and WeownaFlyer (Ire) in the sixth, seventh and eighth races, tyingSaimee=s record before making history in the ninthaboard U.S.-bred gelding Faretti (Tale of the Cat). AWhat=s better than a dream come true? I think this isit,@ an emotional Moreira remarked after his eighth win.ATo be honest, I never dreamed of winning on all myeight rides tonight, but when I started to close in on thefifth win, I thought maybe I had a chance, as I still hadgood chances. I would like to first of all thank theSingapore Turf Club for having given me the chance toride here. There is no better place than Kranji to ride atand I=m so happy I=ve done it here.@ Moreira was also full of praise for his mounts, especially Weowna Flyer and Faretti, who helped himtie and break the record. AWinners come and go, but these two horses will bespecial to me now,@ said Moreira. AI spoke with [trainer]Mike [Clements] after the race, and I told him [WeownaFlyer] is so tricky to ride. He doesn=t like to be insiderunners and when I was able to take him to the outsidetonight, he showed me so much heart in the homestraight. As for Faretti, he took a while to wind up, andfor a moment I thought the eighth win was out of myreach. But then he got going again, and I was inseventh heaven when he hit the line in a nick of time.@

I WANT REVENGE TO PAULS MILL Grade I Wood Memorial winner I Want Revenge(Stephen Got EvenBMeguial {Arg}, by Roy) will enterstud for the 2014 season at Ben and Elaine Walden=sPauls Mill in Versailles, Kentucky. The heavy ante-post Kentucky Derby favorite untilraceday when he was forced to scratch due to an anklefilling, I Want Revenge launches Walden=s return to thestallion business, on hiatus since the sale of the stud=sfour stallions to WinStar Farm in 2011. AI love falling in love with a stallion,@ said Walden. AIcount it a privilege to support a stallion with a lot of ourown mares, and to infuse ideas and passion into hismarketing. I Want Revenge is a game-changer. He wasa freak of nature as a racehorse and is the best-madehorse conformation-wise that I have ever retired tostud. His Gotham win was truly unforgettable.@ I Want Revenge was winner of the GIII Gotham S.--by8 1/2 lengths (video)--and the GI Wood Memorial, where he reared at the start and came with aremarkable late run to score by a widening 1 1/2lengths (video). Both of those efforts came while hewas under the care of trainer Jeff Mullins. By a son of A.P. Indy out of a daughter of Roy(Fappiano), I Want Revenge is bred along the same linesas Tapit and Bernardini. His dam, Meguial, was one ofRoy=s top winners in Argentina, where she was secondin the Argentine equivalents to the 1000 Guineas andOaks. Roy himself was a 17-length winner of hismaiden race at two, and won twice at Aqueduct atthree before going on to be a successful sire in Chileand Argentina. I Want Revenge was weighted at 118 on theExperimental Free Handicap at 2 after finishing secondby a nose to Pioneerof the Nile in the GI HollywoodFuturity. "I have an exceptional partner in I Want Revenge inPat Madden, and we currently have a second horse inmind,@ said Walden. AWe have been buying mares oflate and Pat enjoys the symmetry of being involved inboth sides of the business." A stud fee will be announced in the near future.

Ben Walden, Jr. has been at the forefront of the stallionbusiness for the last 25 years. He began Vinery in 1986standing stallions such as Red Ransom andCryptoclearance. Walden sold Vinery in 1998, andbegan Pauls Mill in 2011, standing U S Ranger, ArtieSchiller, Bellamy Road and Summer Bird. After sellingthose stallions to WinStar Farm, Walden has focused onbroodmares and young horses at Pauls Mill, but will re-enter the stallion business in 2014 with I Want Revenge(Stephen Got Even--Meguial {Arg}, by Roy).

Why did you decide to get back into the stallionbusiness?BW: I don=t feel like we have been out of the stallionbusiness because we continue to be vested in the fourhorses that went to WinStar in Bellamy Road, ArtieSchiller, Summer Bird and U SRanger. We still have someownership in those horses andit=s a pleasure to be involvedwith WinStar on the outside andwith my brother Elliott, who isdoing a magnificent job overthere. We have taken shares inGemologist and Bodemeister--two of the five horses they havesyndicated in the last couple ofyears. We=ve been building andimproving Pauls Mill slowly, butsurely. Since we sold thestallions we=ve been raising foalsand breeding for the market. We also have a smallracing stable. We have taken a position in Maclean=sMusic over at John Sikura=s Hill >n Dale as well.

What have you done in the interim?BW: We=ve been buying mares because we felt it was agood time to buy mares. We=re up to 60 mares at PaulsMill and we=ve been raising young horses and sellingyearlings and weanlings. Cont. p17

Walden Q&A cont.

Why did you pick I Want Revenge?

BW: He was an easy horse to land on. The horses thathave blessed my life with stallion success have shareda common thread in that they have shown some sort ofbrilliance during their racing career. More specifically,Red Ransom was a brilliant maiden winner when hebroke the track record at Saratoga. Bellamy Road was abrilliant race horse and has turned out to be potentiallya great sire. The best is yet to come for him. Elliott andhis team have done a better job getting mares to himthan I did. Both Red Ransom and Bellamy Road are ofthe mold that I Want Revenge is from. His WoodMemorial was spectacular. He was left at the gate, hemissed the break badly and somehow he connectedwith the field turning for home behind a wall of horsesand it wasn=t until the last 50-100 yards that he had achance to win the race and he did--it was just anamazing effort. Off that race he was going to be ashort price in a full Derby field and I watched him overthe last several years when IEAH tried to keep bringinghim back and he wasn=t the same horse. He was theperfect horse to re-enter the stallion business with and Ilove the fact that he=s bred like Tapit and Bernardini.

How many more stallions do you plan on acquiring?

BW: Our barn has four stalls and we have no interest inadding more. We=re looking at another horse right nowthat we, hopefully, will be able to acquire for the 2014breeding season. He=s a similar horse to Bellamy Roadand I Want Revenge in that he=s a top two-turn dirthorse with tremendous two-turn speed.

What are your goals for Pauls Mill?

BW: My goals for Pauls Mill is to survive--number one--and to continue getting up in the mornings and walkingout onto a farm that may be as beautiful as any incentral Kentucky, and enjoy doing what I do for aliving. It has been a tremendous blessing. I=m 55 and Ithink most breeders in our business would agree thatit=s a privilege to do what we do. It=s not always easyto makes ends meet, but it=s a privilege. You=re dealingwith so many things beyond your control, but that=swhere my faith comes in. Our goal is to stay small, do agood job, put a lot of creativity and energy into ourthree or four stallions, try to fill them up, and let thechips fall where they fall.

WINSLOW HOMER RETIRED Winslow Homer(Unbridled=s Song--Summer Raven, by Summer Squall)has been retired to stud at Brent and Crystal Fernung=sJourneyman Stud in Ocala, Florida, for the 2014breeding season, where he will stand as the property ofa syndicate. AI followed Winslow Homer=s racingcareer closely from the time he broke his maiden atSaratoga as a 2-year-old,@ said Brent Fernung. AHe hadas much talent as any horse in his crop. He=s a beautifulhorse with a pedigree to match. The breeders in Floridaare going to love him.@ Winslow Homer retires with fourwins from 11 starts and earnings of $273,365. Equine Industry Contributes $3 Billion in KY: According to the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey, theequine industry created 40,665 jobs and had a totaleconomic impact of $3 billion in the state last year. Italso contributed $134 million in tax money. The value-added effect, which is a measure ofprofitability and new income paid to workers, totaled$1.4 billion. AWe are pleased to announce the long-awaited resultsfrom the economic impact study,@ said Jill Stowe,University of Kentucky Ag Equine Programs director.AThe estimates underscore the continued significance ofthe equine industry to the commonwealth, and theyshow that each segment of the industry contributes inimportant ways to the economy as well as to the richcultural fabric of Kentucky.@ Breeding had the highest employment figure of16,198, while racing had the highest output of $1.28billion. The study also found that there were 35,000 equineoperations and 1.1 million acres devoted to horses. Themajority of the state=s equines are used for trail andpleasure riding and broodmares are the second largestgroup. "The data from this study will benefit the state inmany ways,@ said Anna Zinkhon, Kentucky HorseCouncil Board president. AWe have already made use ofthe results at two regional horsemen=s caucuses held inareas with identified concentrations of equinepopulations. We are looking forward to at least threeadditional regional horsemen=s caucuses based on thisdata in 2014."

Ondine played the role of bridesmaid in her first threecareer trips to the post, but broke through in an 8 1/2-furlong test over the Santa Anita main track Apr. 12.She successfully transferred that form to the HollywoodCushion Track, taking a first-level allowance by aconvincing 3 3/4 lengths May 11 and gave a goodaccount of herself when a pace-pressing third in the GIIHollywood Oaks June 22. She was exiting anallowance third at Del Mar July 24, but the form of thatrace was strong, as the winner, Sweet Lulu (Mr.Greeley) shipped to the East Coast and proved a gamewinner of the GI Test S. Aug. 24. Cutting back to asprint for this, Ondine was midfield past the stands forthe first time and improved her position slightly downthe backstretch. Given her cue leaving the quarter pole, she was sent up three wide into the lane and held off alate bid from Warren=s Veneda for the victory.Click for the brisnet.com chart.

Among those he encounters here is MichaelTabor, Derrick Smith and Susan Magnier’s Masai (Ire) (Oasis Dream{GB}), the pick of Joseph O’Brien of the two Ballydoyle runners and ahalf-brother to the 2011 GIII Miesque S. scorer More Than Love (MoreThan Ready).
