Attention Eclipse Voters: Important Clarification I was about to send in my Eclipse votes yesterdaywhen it was pointed out to me why I=ve been soconfused about certain statistics supplied to voters bythe Eclipse Awards-sponsoring organizations (DailyRacing Form, NTRA, and National Turf Writers andBroadcasters [NTWAB]); these are the Leaders= Lists, particularly for Leading Owner and Leading Breeder, both in the printed version, sent out to voters; and online. If you read the fine print, it does say that theselists include racing from Dubai World Cup night. As ithappens, on that night Godolphin sent out 19 startersand won three races and $9.7 million in prize money. Ifyou look on the www.equibase.com website, and go toStats for Owners (there are top-left buttons forearnings in graded stakes and all stakes also), you cansee that Godolphin, in North American races, earned$3,749,075, which ranks them eighth on the owners=list by purse money. On the material sent out to voters,as well as on the website set up for Eclipse voters,Godolphin is the wide-margin leading owner, withstable earnings of $13,449,075. Again, though,$9,700,000 of that was earned in Dubai; they wonthree group races that night, including a 1-2 in the G1 Dubai World Cup, worth $8 million. All threewinners were bred by Darley, which shows $16.7-million in earnings in the Eclipse information onbreeders. I=m not trying to argue for or against anybodyhere, but I did just want to point out to any of myfellow voters who have not yet voted, what are theconsequences to the tables we are studying whenthose races are included, and to what extent they maylook quite different if those Dubai races are notincluded.

CIBELLI OUT TO CONQUER NEW TERRITORYby J.M. So far, she=s talliedtwo wins at Gulfstream and five at Tampa, where shefinished fourth in the trainer standings last year. The British-born Cibelli got her start with show horsesas a child, movingto Florida to workas an exerciserider when shewas in her earlytwenties. It=s agreat training surface, but the racing is not that great,unfortunately,@ Cibelli said of her reason for splitting herbarn between the two Florida tracks. AThe racing isbetter at Gulfstream and it=s a lot more competitive, ofcourse. It makes it challenging because you have tohave assistants in both places. Luckily, I have two very, very good assistants [Nicole Romans at Gulfstream andRobbie Holman at Tampa], so it works well, but it=schallenging.@ Since becoming the first woman to take MonmouthPark=s training title in the track=s 66-year history, Cibellihas set her sights on higher goals. AObviously, the Breeders= Cup or Kentucky Derby,@Cibelli named as future aspirations. AThat=s your dream, anyway. That=s how you know you=ve succeeded in thisbusiness.@ A key to Cibelli achieving her lofty ambitions is thequality of stock in her barn, which has steadilyimproved in recent years. HOF INTRODUCES ‘PILLARS OF THE TURF’by Mike Kane Nearly six decades after it was the established, racing's Hall of Fame has made an historic departurefrom policy by adding a new category of inductees--Pillars of the Turf--beginning in 2013. Trustees of the National Museum of Racing inSaratoga Springs, New York approved expanding thescope of the Hall of Fame during its summer meeting.Since it welcomed its first class in 1955, the Hall ofFame has been limited to outstanding horses, trainersand jockeys. The Pillars of the Turf, the equivalent of"builders" or "contributors" to divisions in manysporting halls of fame, is open to other distinguishedracing people. Unlike the journalists selected for the museum's JoeHirsch Media Roll of Honor and the five people themuseum has named Exemplars of Racing since 1971,individuals chosen as Pillars of the Turf will be membersof the Hall of Fame. "It's safe to say it is the biggest change we've had in60 years," said Christopher Dragone, director of theNational Museum of Racing. "I think it's long overdue, and I'm very pleased that the board made the move inthis direction." Cont. p7

Pillars of Turf cont.

A committee of journalists, historians and trusteeswill select one person from the pre-1950 era andanother from the more recent post-1950 years. EdwardL. Bowen, the Hall of Fame chairman, will oversee the12-person committee. Each inductee must receive 75% of the committee's votes. With two Pillars of the Turf, the 2013 Hall of Fameclass could have as many as nine members, the largestgroup since nine were inducted in 1978. Thecontemporary Hall of Fame voters may elect amaximum of four inductees per year. The SteeplechaseCommittee, which meets every four years, could electthree individuals: a jockey, a trainer and a horse. For years, Bowen has had to defend the Museum'spolicy of maintaining the original approach to the Hall ofFame, which excluded significant owners, breeders andracing and track officials. When an ad hoc committee oftrustees appointed by Museum president Stella Thayerbegan considering a proposed fourth division, Bowenwas surprised to find who supported the idea. "I had always taken great pleasure in feeling that Ihad a small role in shepherding the vision of the greatpeople who had created the museum, George Widener,C. V. Whitney and Walter Jeffords," Bowen said."When we got into discussing it, Lev Miller, who is thenephew of C.V. Whitney, said he didn't feel that way.He didn't feel that there was anything sacred aboutdoing it the way his uncle had envisioned it. "I thought, gosh, if a guy in that position doesn't feelthat way, that took the sword out of my hand becausewhy fight to preserve something that other peopledon't feel needs to be preserved? "It was fairly quick that the executive committeewent from having never done it, to recognizing theadvantage of it. It's probably hard to use the phrase, >abreath of fresh air= about something that is ahalf-century old, but it will be a pleasure to be reachingback and not only honoring people but helping toeducate people today about the great leaders of thepast." The core of the Pillars of the Turf committee iscomprised of members of the Historic ReviewCommittee: Bowen, Miller, Jane Goldstein, KenGrayson, Jay Hovdey, Bill Mooney, Mary Simon,Michael Veitch and Gary West. Historian and journalistBill Marshall and trustees G. Watts Humphrey and D. G.Van Clief complete the lineup. Candidates for consideration are expected to have atleast 25 years of participation in the industry, but thecommittee has the authority to waive that requirement. It also can decide where to place an individual whosecareer straddles 1950. While adding a more general Hall of Fame categoryhas been talked about informally, Dragone said thatThayer moved it to the front burner. "I think it was more of a general feeling that it wastime to make a change and start thinking abouthonoring people," Dragone said. "Over the years therehas been discussions about it. This time it got traction."Cont. p8

Pillars of Turf cont.

As it does with its other categories, the Hall of Famewill accept suggestions on who to consider for Pillars ofthe Turf from the public. The deadline is Apr. 1. The challenge facing Bowen and his committee iswho to choose for the inaugural selections. Who is themost important person in each era? "When they started the Hall of Fame, they did a littlecatch-up," he said. "They put in six or seven in eachdivision in the beginning. We felt that it would be amore distinguished award if we do it one at a time." Bowen, president of the Grayson-Jockey ClubResearch Foundation, is a veteran journalist and haswritten nearly 20 books on racing and its history. Hesaid he is looking forward to the task of bringing thePillars of the Turf category to life with a deliberateprocess. "Dell Hancock was on the ad hoc committee toexamine the the idea, and she made the greatestcomment of all: 'We've got to make sure this is verylofty,''' Bowen said. "That was her word, and I said,'That's exactly right.@

NOMINATIONS FROM THE FLOOR: BRIANDIDONATO'S TOP 10 PERFORMANCES I felt compelled to write after reading BrianDiDonato's 10 best performances in Friday's TDN. Forme, Little Mike's Breeders' Cup Turf should not onlyhave made the list, but should be near the top.Although the Turf lacked, for some, the depth of someof its best renewals, the six Group 1/Grade I winners ina 12-horse field certainly represented more than amplequality. Admittedly, he was 17-1, but that was less anindicator of his ability than the fact that the racefigured to go against his running style. That he wasable to adjust his style by coming from slightly off thepace and win at a distance at which he had neverwon--1 1/2 miles--certainly underscores that this wasone of the best performances of the year, and atrack-record setting performance at that.
