Genetic Engineering
By Rhianna Taylor
What is Genetic Engineering?
• Genetic engineering can also be called genetic GM or modification.
• It is different to cloning, even though some steps involved in cloning are the same as the ones in genetic engineering.
The differences
Cloning• It produces exact copies• Genes get copied within the
same species
GM• It produces a unique set of
genes• The genes can be swapped
across species.
Genetic Modification of an
Organism
Choose an organism with a gene that you want copied and put
into another organism.
A gene is cut out using enzymes and then placed into another organisms Chromosome. The chromosome now has the
‘good’ gene and is placed into
another organism.
Genetic Engineering to produce a Chemical
Useful gene to make the
chemical, e.g. insulin
Gene is cut out using enzymes and inserted into a plasmid.
The plasmid is placed into a bacteria and left to
reproduce.
The bacteria reproduces and it
now has the chemical insulin.
