GeneticEngineering?
What is
GENETIC ENGINEERING DEFINITION (GENETIC
MODIFICATION)
Genetic modification - or GM - is the scientific alteration of genetic material in a living organism
BENEFITS
MEDICAL FIELD
AGRICULTURE
RESEARCH
INDUSTRY
• Treatment for heart attack• Vaccine manufacturing• Cancer treatments• HIV infection treatment
• Transforming microorganisms such as bacteria or yeast, or insect mammalian cells with a gene coding for a useful protein
• discover the functions of certain genes
• Crop resistance to insects and certain herbicides
• Delaying ripening of fruits
THE PROS AND CONS (CROP)Pros
The crop don’t have to use insecticidal sprays
May cut the cost of labour since the crop don’t need an intensive care unlike conventional crop
Cons
The seed/crop might be expensive to buy
Sustainable organic agriculture creates much needed jobs in depressed rural economies
THE PROS AND CONS (LIVESTOCKS)Pros
The animal can be engineered to be more resistant to harmful and painful diseases
Cons
No confirmation or insurability these animal wont trigged any health effect to those who consume it.
THE PROS AND CONS (HUMAN )Pros
Gene therapy is being used, as yet experimentally, to treat cancer
Cons
It will take more that gene therapy to combat the cancer since the environmental factor could cause the cancer again
THE PROBLEM
Biological danger, especially to mammalian species (GMO food)In 1996,the GMO soy have cause some death in Brazil when the
consumer are nuts allergic
No GMO food labeling on the marketDanger to the consumer if they have any allergic to certain
ingredient
Environmental danger with the emergence of superweedThe crop is resistant to certain herbicides which make the farmer
will spray the superweeds repeatedly, unaware that the weeds are herbicide-resistant.
THE ETHICS
Creation of new life forms and crossing species boundaries
Long-term effects on human health and the environment
Blending of nonhuman animal and human DNA
Unintended personal, social, and cultural consequences
CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSIONWhat's the future for genetic engineering?
Are you agree with genetic engineering @ genetic modification?
THANK YOU
