As 3D cinema enjoys a revival with Hollywood blockbusters, an unexpected retrospective in Moscow reveals the Soviet Union began entertaining its citizens with homegrown 3D films as early as the 1940s.

The films may lack the exotic plots of Hollywood 3D films such as James Cameron’s 2009 “Avatar” and Ridley Scott’s current release “Prometheus” but are of astonishing technical quality and sophistication.

In a colour film called “In the Avenues of the Park,” a young woman in a print dress stretches her hand holding a rose towards the viewer, while young men in baggy trousers stroll and schoolboys in caps run about.

The crystal-clear film shows Moscow’s Gorky Park in 1952, a year before Stalin died, yet the 3D technol-ogy similar to that now filling multiplexes makes it feel eerily current.

“3D before our era,” Kommersant headlined a story on the films, which were shown in a special programme at the Moscow International Film Festival.

The programme of films have been restored and digi-tised by two enthusiasts, Nikolai Mayorov and Nikolai Kotovsky.

“We have all got used to hearing various legends that 3D cinema came to us from the United States,” Mayorov told an audience at the festival. “In fact, it came there from Russia.”

Surprisingly, the first showing of a 3D film in Rus-sia was in 1911, several years before the first one in the United States.

The first commercial Soviet 3D film was “Concert” or “Land of Youth”, first shown in 1941, a few months before the Soviet Union joined World War II.

A tour de force showing off scenes from ocean waves to a ball in around 40 minutes, it was designed for view-ing without glasses.

Viewers watched the film through a wire grid that meant the left and right eye saw two different images at the same time, creating an illusion of depth. The system called stereo cinema was created by a Soviet inventor called Semyon Ivanov.

The “Concert” film was mainly black-and-white but had sections where it burst into colour -- a technique also used in Hollywood for 1939 hit “The Wizard of Oz” -- causing a sensation at the time.

Jolie is to be made an honorary citizen of Sarajevo during her stay, an honour first announced in April, for her efforts in “keeping the truth about wartime events in Sarajevo and Bosnia-Hercegovina alive”.

The award is given by the Sarajevo county every year to a foreign national who promotes humanity, democracy and tolerance.

Jolie’s film “In the Land of Blood and Honey” -- shot in 2010 with several actors from the former Yugoslavia, and

premiered in 2011 -- dealt with the issues of war crimes.

While the project initially sparked concern in Bosnia, once it was shown, most victims’ groups welcomed it as objective and sincere.

Jolie arrived without Brad Pitt but with at least three of their children on board a private plane at Sarajevo’s airport around 1400 GMT, an AFP photographer said.

She attended a workshop for young film artists from 13 countries, held on

the sidelines of the 18th Sarajevo Film Festival, organisers said.

“The Sarajevo Film Festival is such an important event to focus the world’s attention on the art, the music and the immense talent in the region,” Jolie was quoted as saying in a statement issued by organisers.

Jolie spoke about her experiences of numerous visits to conflict or poverty-stricken areas in her role as UNHCR goodwill ambassador.

The Sarajevo Film Festival -- born as an act of resistance when the Bosnian capital was under siege during the 1992-1995 war -- has has grown to be one of the largest in Europe.

“Orphanage visit is our annual activ-ity which is one of Archipelago’s CSR program in addition to tree planting, beach cleanup and many more,” Ar-chipelago International’s VP Human Resources, Lukas K. Samali said.

He said that in Bali, Archipelago In-ternational visited the Elisama orphan-age which currently cares for around 45 children, from toddlers to Senior High School teenagers.

Meanwhile in Jakarta, the operator of several wellknown hotels in Indone-sia, visited Kampung Melayu orphan-age which currently nurtures around 60 children of various ages.

During the visit, Lukas stated, games and activities were held to gain more

emotional connection and delivered daily requirements for the children as well as much needed educational equipments.

Corporate social responsibility at Archipelago means demonstrating the vision and values of the company throughout operations, partnerships, and social programs.

“For the next orphanage visit we are planning to engage Archipelago hotels participation all around Indonesia and South East Asia. We are deeply com-mitted to conducting business in a so-cially responsible and ethical manner, and visits such as these help to show the kind of company we are and what we stand for,” Lukas added.

his holiday in Bali, due to oxygen shortage, Calson (30), from Singapore collapsed during diving in Sanur Beach. According to his friend, Thomas, the incident happened when Calson was diving with four other friends. The instructor accompanied them and gave a warning to go up soon as the tide is strong. Yet when all went up to the boat, Calson was still in the middle of his diving then realised that a tide was approaching him. They lost sight of where he was until he appeared floating unconscious. Calson was then brought up and rushed to Sanglah Hospital. With an oxygen help, he hasn’t been conscious and still on observation in the hospital. “It was hard for him to go up with the tide hitting him while his diving suit is up to the neck causing him hard to breathe,” Thomas stated. There is a mechanism and procedure to be followed for those who want to work in Bali but it’s not rare some of them avoided and worked illegally. Those companies that want to work them has to make a plan on them then propose it to the nearest agency which then forwarded to Workers Ministry. Hey also have to be accompanied by lo-cal workers in technology adaptation and shouldn’t take over local workers position. “Some of the illegal ones had a holiday visa then stayed here and work. Even though

they report it to us we couldn’t act much as those who gave them that is the immigra-tion. Immigration should coordinate with connecting agency yet all this time Bali seemed fooled,” Wiratha stated.

The data on illegal workers is still unknown yet it is hoped immigrations, police, peace and order police of Bali will coordinate with the Agency to data them also take action. All this time the action hasn’t been clear enough causing local workers abandoned. Meanwhile Bali

Representative from Commission IV, Budi Hartawan, was saddened by the situation. He thinks this is to do with the Workers Agency, Immigration, Police and Govern-ment not committing in taking action to illegal workers such as like in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. “It seemed our people still on the foreigners side. We are saddened with it as it affects to the local workers who did not get a job in their own origin also creating more unemployment,” Hartawan exclaimed. (kmb29)

Bali PostTABANAN - The bad weather that hits

South Tabanan waters still puts fishermen not to give up on fishing. The past few days have been a bad luck for Yeh Gangga Beach lobster searchers at Sudimara Village, Tabanan more-over the price is not getting higher. One of them, Dewa Toblo, stated even the bad weather isn’t stopping, they still look for lobsters at 6 am lo-cal time then come back several hours as stated last Friday (6/7).

It was stated the fishermen do keep up with the weather forecast through internet and if there are any warnings but due to the economic situation they’re facing, they have to go search for these lobsters even though its results haven’t been maximal. The usual 5 kilograms now became 2-3 kilograms with the price reaching IDR 250.000 per kg when actually for one time fishing the fee used was actually high. Toblo stated the catching device called bubu reached IDR 75,000 per piece while every fisherman at least needs 5 of them and this fee is not yet including petrol. It also seemed that the weather is changing which usu-ally this month wind would blow from south to north yet this time its east to west causing the high tides. These past three days the tide was much better reaching 9 feet which now reached 6 feet. It is hoped that the weather will go normal as the fishermen only depends on the lobster result. (kmb30)

not all of them are legal and most of their position can be placed by locals instead. Sadly those on data seemed not seriously taken or even signed moreover government never take any action on it. Based on the data by Bali Workers and Transmigration Agency stated officially that it has increased which in 2010 reached 1,420 while in 2011 reached 1,455 people working in hotels and restaurants with most of them in Denpasar and Badung with dominating from Australia, Japan and France as stated by Head of the Agency, Wayan Wiratha, last Saturday (7/7).

KUTA - Five major beaches in Badung area, which are Kuta, Jimbaran, Legian, Seminyak, and Kedonganan being cleaned up during Bali’s Big Eco Weekend pro-gram. The program that initiated by Coca Cola and Quicksilver, become a major event on ecological program in Bali.

Thousands of people, both local and tourists participated in the clean up ses-sion that held on Sunday morning. They pick up rubbish and waste that can be found around those beaches. This action hopefully can do some changes and Bali’s beaches can be cleaner.

According to CEO Quicksilver South East Asia, Paul Hutson, Bali beaches in critical danger because many rubbish and waste scatter without being picked up. The reason why Bali’s Big Eco Weekend choose those five beaches in Badung area because those are the most critical beaches that can be found during this windy season. Most of rubbish on those five beaches actually not only from local but they came along the way from Java. “I think those are the dirtier during this windy season because rubbish from Java came ashore and landed in those beaches,” he explained.

He stated that Quicksilver and Coca

Cola very concerned with rubbish problem in Bali’s beaches because they have surf-ing competition annually and most of the competitions are held in Bali. “This why clean up action also become a corporate social responsibility, both for Quicksilver and Coca Cola. This action already being established around 2008 and collected around 10,000 tons of waste in the pro-cess,” Hutson said.

Group Managing Director Coca Cola Amatil Terry Davis added that Bali can get lots of benefit if it can keep its beaches clean. Besides focusing on beach’s clean-ing, Coca Cola and Quicksilver also initi-ated Kuta Beach Sea Turtle Conservation (KBSTC) that preserve turtle population. Around 17,000 baby turtles have been released to the wild by KBSTC.

On Saturday, in the opening session of 2nd Bali’s Big Eco Weekend, around 1,000 baby turtles being released on Kuta Beach. That day, Garuda Indonesia, the biggest national airlines, also donated two Barber Surf Rakes to clean up the beach. Garuda, which became the main sponsor of this year annually event, according to VP of Corpo-rate Communications PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk, Pujobroto, support this event because the airline have big concern for Bali. Bali, said Pujobroto, become a very important destination for Garuda . (kmb18)

“Malaysian tourists represent a potential market for Bali’s tourism industry thanks to the increasing number of tourist ar-rivals every year on the island,” the head of the province’s tourism service, Ida Bagus Kade Subik-shu, said here on Saturday.

He said that a total of 693,432 tourists came to the island from Malaysia between January and May, 2012, constituting 6.13 per-cent of the total number of foreign arrivals during the period. While quoting data from the province’s tourism service, he also added that a total of 1,132,462 foreign tourists visited the island.

The number was up 3.57 per-cent from the same period last year at 66,953.

He said right now Malaysia is the third biggest source of foreign tourists to Bali, after Australia and China.

He said Malaysian tourists like Balinese culture and landscapes, including its beaches.

He said two airlines compa-nies - one national and another a Malaysian private company have also contributed to this trend with eight direct flight services of-fered between Malaysia and Bali every day.

He said most tourists from Malaysia stay nine days in Bali on an average and spend around US$130 per person per day.

Agence France-PresseSEOUL - Checking into one of Seoul’s newest luxury clinics just

because your companion needs a shower may seem extravagant, but Cho Hang-Min said he had no other choice.

“Other places won’t do it,” said Cho, a student, explaining why he and his Border Collie have stopped off at Irion.

The two-storey establishment in the city’s wealthy Gangnam district is a luxury hotel and clinic for pampered pets -- a rising trend in South Korea where dogs were once treated as guard animals or as something to eat.

These days younger Koreans are spending more on their pets, en-abling the rise of a high-end industry out to ensure that canine compan-ions are just as pampered as their style-conscious owners.

Irion, which means “Come here” in Korean, opened in February 2011 as a one-stop complex offering a veterinary clinic, grooming salon, cafe, shop, daycare centre, an exercise area and “hotel” rooms for dogs and cats.

“I opened Irion because I saw the demand in the industry, to keep pace with the growing animal companion culture in Korea as the economy develops,” Park So-Yeon, head of the DBS company which runs the facility, told AFP.

“These facilities are necessities, not luxuries, for people raising ani-mals. Unfortunately I couldn’t find facilities good enough to feel safe and satisfied before I opened Irion.”

Irion offers 36 rooms of varying sizes and high-end clinical equipment including computer tomography, X-ray and ultrasound machines. At the front door a shop sells everything from snacks to pet strollers.

Hotel fees range from 40,000 won ($35.26) to 200,000 won a night.

“People say it’s nonsensical to spend all that money on animals, but we provide daily health checkups, a hygienic environment, large hotel rooms and an exercise area and I’m pretty sure this is not a high price,” said Park.

“And as for the clinic, we have vet specialists for different body parts, even a herbal medicine vet and high-technology equipment that smaller hospitals don’t possess.”

Despite the price, Park said about 2,000 dogs and cats come to Irion every month for all sorts of services. During the summer vacation sea-son, rooms are booked out.

Cho, 19, was not quibbling about cost after reclaiming his newly fragrant pooch. “The hospital is big and clean...I like it here and plan to come here once every two weeks to shower my dog,” he said.

Another patron, Lee Ji-Hyun, said price was not a problem in return for good care. “Services are great and my babies love the place,” she said of her two Maltese terriers and a Yorkshire terrier.

For pop-culture lovers — the self-professed geeks and nerds who delight in fantasy-inspired fun from anime to zombies — there is Comic-Con, the Olympic-sized celebration of movies, TV, video games, costumes and pop art that began as a humble comic-book convention 43 years ago and is now an annual marketing extrava-ganza.

From Thursday to Sunday, more than 100,000 pop-culture aficio-nados will flood the San Diego Convention Center, showing off their Storm Trooper suits, playing yet-to-be-released video games and attending panels featuring A-list filmmakers like Peter Jackson and such hot TV shows as “Game of Thrones.”

But first comes Wednesday’s “preview night.” Available only to those who bought four-day passes to the sold-out convention, the showing is decidedly low tech, yet high end: it’s all about collect-ible toys.

On display will be special-issue, limited-edition playthings and

LOS ANGELES — Football fans have the Super Bowl. Soccer enthusiasts have the World Cup. Cinephiles have the Academy Awards.

books made just for the pop-culture fest. These include not only the unique freebies that various booths are giving away, but also coveted collectibles that could fetch hun-dreds of dollars at Comic-Con and hundreds more in after-market sales.

“There are people who buy tickets for every day of the show so that on Wednesday night they can be the first in line for these exclusive collectibles. That’s their reward for going to a destination like Comic-Con,” said pop-culture expert and host of G4’s “Attack of the Show” Blair Butler. “There are also people who flip that stuff on eBay for hundreds of dollars. They buy two: One to keep and one to sell on eBay.”

Collectors will literally run across the massive convention center floor when the doors open Wednesday evening to cue up for products like Hasbro’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Super Helicarrier, a four-foot-long replica of the flying superhero headquarters from the “Avengers” movie and Mattel’s quirky Dana as

Zuul “Ghostbusters” figurine. Oth-ers seek out small-run exclusives such as the golden Domo bobble-head doll (only 1,000 made) and Image Comics’ special hardcover comics collection “The Walking Dead: Compendium One” (only 900 available).

Toy companies and publishers large and small make special prod-ucts just for the Comic-Con crowd. Hasbro and Mattel each issue around 10 Comic-Con exclusives a year. These toys are introduced at Comic-Con and limited numbers are often made available for sale later at Toys “R’’ Us and on each company’s collector websites.

“Everything is made in lim-ited quantities. Products can double, t r iple , quadruple in price over the course of a year,” said Hugo Stevenson, president of Huckleberry Toys, which is offering zombies and other figurines based on the upcoming film “ParaNorman.” ‘’There’s a whole group of people who actu-ally make a business out of this: Going down and buying collect-ibles at San Diego Comic-Con and then selling them in their stores or on eBay.”

For most collectors, though, add-ing exclusive items to a carefully cultivated collection is priceless.

Many people were asleep when the flooding hit overnight in the Krasnodar region, and the water rushed into the area around the hard-hit town of Krimsk with such speed and volume that rumors emerged that local officials had opened a nearby water reservoir. Muddy water coursed through streets and homes, in some cases high enough to flow over the hoods of cars and even as high as rooftops, according to witnesses.

People waded through waist-high water or maneuvered the streets in boats on Saturday. About 5,000 residences were flooded, the Krasnodar governor was quoted as telling the Interfax news agency.

“Nobody remembers such a flood in all (of the area’s) history,” Alexander Tkachev said.

The Interior Ministry gave the death toll as 103 on Saturday evening, according to Russian news agencies; a regional minis-try spokesman said earlier that at least 67 of the deaths were around Krimsk, about 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) south of Moscow. Five people were electrocuted in the Black Sea coastal city of Gelend-zhik after a transformer fell into the water, state news agency RIA Novosti said.

Anna Kovalevskaya, whose parents live in the flooded area, described water inundating their

home up to the roof.“In the town, people are saying

that a reservoir in the mountains above was opened,” she told the Moscow-based radio station Rus-sian News Service. “A wave came from there. There was seven meters (22 feet) of water in the town.”

Tkachev reacted angrily to the speculation, saying on his Twitter account: “Stop spreading stupid rumors ... Now is the time to get through things together, not mock.”

President Vladimir Putin flew to the region Saturday evening, view-ing the damage from a helicopter. He will also meet with regional officials in Krimsk.

State news channel Rossiya 24 showed video of area residents rescuing people in small, inflatable boats and others slogging glumly through flooded homes.

“It came so fast!” exclaimed one woman, whose name was not given, waving an arm in frustration at the shin-deep water in her living room, where a large teddy bear sat on a sofa.

More than 28 centimeters (11 inches) of rain had fallen in Gelend-zhik since the previous evening, the state meteorological service said.

Gelendzhik is on the Black Sea coast, and along with the area around it, is a popular summer vaca-tion spot, including many children’s

camps. Vice-premier Olga Golodets told RIA Novosti that some 7,100 children were at holiday camps in the area, and that 459 children had to be evacuated.

The area also includes Nov-orossiisk, a major Black Sea port. The Transneft oil company said Saturday it has suspended loading oil onto tankers at the port because

of the severe weather.More than 1,500 Emergency

Ministry officials were working to aid flood victims and clean up the damage, state TV said.

LILLE - Eight people were injured early Sunday when an armed man opened fire at a nightclub in northern France after being refused entry, emergency services said.

A source close to the police enquiry launched said that five of those hurt had suffered only mi-nor injuries during the gunfire near the town of Cambrai.

It was not immediately clear whether the shooting took place inside or outside the Vamos discotheque, but afterwards the assailant fled in a car, the source said.

The incident came a week after a gunman shot dead two people at a nightclub in the main northern city of Lille, in an apparent revenge attack after he was kicked out of the establishment.

LONDON - Besides the battle for sporting glory at London 2012, an-other intense Olympic competition is taking place beyond the stadiums: the contest for the best national hospitality houses.

Around 20 countries have set up a headquarters in the British capital, transforming some of the city’s finest buildings into bases such as “Club France”, “Casa Brasil”, “Casa Italia” or “Sochi Park”.

Athletes, VIPs, business chiefs, sports fans, expats and passers-by can join in the cultural, sporting or culinary festivities being rolled out.

On the menu are receptions to toast medallists, sporting action on big screens, shows and concerts. Not to mention the bars and restaurants serving up national specialities.

The hospitality houses will be, in effect, a shop window for that country during the Games.

The phenomenon is not a new one. It generally started out with conference rooms in hotels for small-scale gath-erings but has snowballed with each Olympic Games and now encompasses a mini-cultural festival.

London may have edged out Paris for the right to host the 2012 Games but that has not stopped France going all-out in the hospitality house stakes.

The French Olympic Village has taken over the Old Billingsgate Market, formerly the world’s largest fish market, on the banks of the River Thames, which boasts 7,000 square metres of space and can host around 3,500 people -- as op-posed to the space big enough for 600 that France had in Beijing 2008.

Live Television and radio broadcasts will take place from the centre, which

the public will have access to for the first time.

The hospitality house, which is the biggest and most expensive ever installed by France, is an “ambitious project”, admitted Denis Masseglia, president of the French National Olym-pic and Sporting Committee.

The cost of the venue reached 1.8 million euros ($2.2 million), before tak-ing into account running running costs. But France can count on competition from Russia and Brazil -- respective hosts of the Sochi winter Olympics in 2014 and Rio de Janeiro summer Olym-pics in 2016 -- who are also determined to make their mark.

Moscow, which has let it be known that President Vladimir Putin may come to London for the Games, is taking up residence in the plush Kensington Gar-dens for “the biggest Russian event ever held in the UK”.

DENPASAR - Although the inflation rate occurred in Bali is quite stable, namely 0.43 percent, the export value of commodities from Bali sent through some ports in Indonesia in May 2012 even in-

dicated a drop. If the export value of Bali’s commodity in April 2012 reached USD 52,982,000 and then in May it decreased 3.26 percent or only valued at USD 51,253,000.

“When compared to the same month in previous year, the ex-port value of Bali also declined

by 2.33 percent or reached USD 52,474,000,” said the Head of Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Gede Suarsa, in Denpasar last weekend.

So far, most exports were des-tined for the big five countries like the United States, Japan, Singapore,

Australia and Hong Kong. If the export development of the five countries compared to the situa-tion in April 2012, four countries showed a decline namely Japan, Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong with respective percentage of 12.61 percent, 7.79 percent, 18.89 percent and 3.64 percent. Mean-while, the increase only happened to export to the United States with percentage of 24.12 percent.

“Of course, we expect the export value will rise again in the coming months,” he said. Gede Suarsa revealed that among the five major commodities exported in May 2012 consisting of fish and shrimp prod-ucts, jewelry/gem product, non-knit garment products, wood products, wood items and furniture products as well as home lighting, a decrease happened to non-knit garment prod-ucts and jewelry/gem products.

An economic observer, Prof. Dr. Gede Sri Darma, previously had assessed the onslaught of foreign products in the domestic market was inevitable due to the impact of globalization. “The flooding imported products amidst our un-preparedness have an impact on the

loss in competition against the other countries because our employers have been long lulled by the condi-tions and circumstances,” he said.

To overcome the problem, he said the Indonesian entrepreneurs should make products with international standard quality so as not to lose competitiveness against foreign products and the economy could run well. “The campaign to participate in marketing the domestic product with the motto ‘We Love Indonesian Products’ must be carried out by all people,” he advised.

Meanwhile, the import value of Bali in May 2012 also decreased. It only reached USD 11,957,000 or a decrease of 19.15 percent if compared to the amount in May 2011 reaching USD 14,789,000 and decreased 5.94 percent compared to the situation in April 2012 amounting to USD 12,711,000. “The main commodities imported in May 2012 were engines, machinery product/electrical equip-ment, jewelry/gem products, iron and steel products as well as vehicles and parts, with respective percentage of 28.63 percent, 16.15 percent, 12.72 percent, 4.05 percent and 3.55 per-cent,” explained Suarsa. Deputy Director of Criminal In-vestigation of Bali Police, Bonar Sitinjak, Friday (Jul 6) confirmed the eight missing foreign tourists had been found. They were Alina Her-mann from German, Maureen Craik (France), Kelly Fernandez (Brazil), Kate Dillon (England), Sara Harrop (England), Andrea Murachelli (Italy), Francois Haderkorn (France) and Thibeault Legrand (France).

“They were found in good condi-tion,” said Deputy Director Bonar Sitinjak. He explained they were back to their accommodation in Hotel Puri Aries at Tulamben, Amed. Meanwhile, the investigators of the Sub Directorate III of General Criminal Investigation had examined two people denoting the captain of MV Sumber Laut I (Sismono—Ed) and the captain of My Darling (Gede Bayu Suta—Ed). “They have been questioned,” he told Bali Post last Saturday.

Bonar Sitinjak explained that so

far his party had examined two wit-nesses. Meanwhile, the victims were questioned in Klungkung Police. How about the agency, would it be going to be examined? Bonar Sitinjak claimed not to plan the measure. His party still focused on the safety of victims. “Later on, the agency will surely be examined,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sismono met in Bali Police after being questioned last Saturday admitted the eight victims were found by accident. He passed at location and saw the light in the middle of the sea. “I was just back from Flores and planned to return to Benoa Harbor. On the way, I and other crews saw a light like a flashlight, flashing in the middle of the sea,” he said.

Initially, Sismono thought if the light was the sign of net. However, when approached, a figure of human waving his hand as a sign to ask for a help. He immediately got near to the light, and it was true if some people

were floating. “At the time, the waves were huge approximately reaching some 3 meters high. So, I had consid-ered if the light were sign of net,” he explained.

Sismono was surprised to see the victims because he found them joining hands along with their diving equip-ment. The victims were in good con-dition. “I and 12 crews immediately lent them a hand. We took a buoy and then pulled them all into the ship. They seemed shocked,” he said.

Probably, they were shocked be-cause they could have been rescued. Even, some of them were directly reflective. Since Sismono could not speak English, so he and other crews just gave them water and food. “We give them drinking water and cooked noodles because the voyage from the point of discovery to Benoa Harbor was about six hours,” he explained.

Not only that, the discovery of victims was also reported directly to

their hotel. Fortunately, one of the victims still remembered the phone number of their hotel. “A crew named Sugi happened to bring a telephone. It was borrowed to contact their hotel and asked to be picked up in Benoa Harbor. We arrived in Benoa Harbor around 5:00 a.m.,” he added.

Sismono added if he found the eight victims by chance. As a rule, he who sailed to purchase fish in Flores for five days never passed the route. “It was a miracle of God in order they could be rescued. On the way home, I never passed the route. But, that night I sailed there because the weather condition was bad,” he said.

Eight divers diseapearMarine accident afflicting 12 for-

eign tourists from Germany, France, Italy, England and Brazil made the speed boat captain, Gede Bayu Suta, panic because eight divers did not come up. “I was extremely surprised. Only four divers showed up, while the others were not visible,” said Bayu when met in Bali Police, Friday (Jul 6).

The four divers consisting of Ra-phael Krauth from German, Rob-ert Lucas (Dutch), Molliet Florian (France), Carollin Telver (England)

also felt the same way because they thought the eight friends had first come up to the boat. “I had been asked by the four guests related to the presence of their friends. I replied that I did not to know,” said the man living on Jalan Betngandang II/9 Sanur, South Denpasar.

Bayu said they departed from Se-mawang Beach, Sanur around 9:30 a.m. local time. They took diving activities in the waters of Nusa Lem-bongan. During the diving activity at that location, the 12 tourists were diving for three times at different locations. “The first diving started at Sakenan Point with a depth of about 18 meters. Second start was at another location with deeper point than the first location,” he said.

Then, the third diving was con-ducted at shallower location than the second one because it was not allowed to look for a deeper location than the second diving. “In the third diving, they slid into the sea at the same time. Each diving lasted for 45 minutes. Well, after the time limit ended, only four people showed up while the oth-ers disappeared. Allegedly, they were swept away because the weather was poor and the current was strong at that time,” he explained. (jay)

GIFU - Police forces use them; shops can’t do without them; power companies have them -- and sack them when they become unpopular. No marketing or public information campaign is complete without them. Cute, cuddly -- or startling -- charac-ters are everywhere in Japan.

While marketers the world over have long understood the value of an oversized cartoon animal who can persuade children to part with their pocket money, those in Japan know it is also an effective way to reach their parents.

And despite the tepid economy, there is money to be made.

The licenced character industry, including copyrights and merchan-dising, is worth a whopping $30 billion a year -- more than Japanese people spend on books annually.

But it’s not just the big names -- Hello Kitty or Pokemon -- that draw the crowds and their cash.

A two-day “grand assembly” in the central Japan city of Gifu at-tracted around 120,000 visitors who were entertained by 47 adult-sized

mascots, one from each prefecture, who treated visitors to songs, dances and endless photo opportunities.

The “yuru-kyara” (suggesting “laid back character”) often repre-sent regions or towns, taking their in-spiration from locally famous foods, personalities, animals, industries or occasionally a combination.

Characters roamed shopping arcades, chased by children holding balloons -- and adults with cell-phones -- who were eager to shake hands and take pictures.

They also had a tug of war, pit-ting the east of the country against the west, and got together for a tightly co-ordinated song and dance extravaganza.

Among their number were Meron-kuma (“Melon-bear”) from Yubari in Hokkaido, land of eye-poppingly expensive melons and home to wild bears, and Hamburger Boy, a giant walking patty in a sailor’s uniform representing the southwestern city of Sasebo, the seat of a large US naval base.

One of the few human shapes included Lerch-san, a long-faced European with a moustache, based

on Theodor Edler von Lerch, who mountainous Niigata claims was Japan’s first ski instructor.

Kumamon, a bear from Kuma-moto, a place whose name appears to indicate the presence of the large carnivores, despite their not being found that far south, was one of the more popular characters.

Yano Research Institute estimates Japan’s character market was worth 2,389.5 billion yen ($30 billion) in the year to March 2011, down 1.7 percent from the previous year.

“The market size is on a gradual declining path over the long term as drops in population and ageing of society continue,” the Tokyo-based institute said in a report late last year.

But continued innovation, from stamp rallies and card game compe-titions that involve the whole family, continue to draw in the punters, it said.

Fans also visit places and facili-ties linked to their favourite charac-ters in what is called “pilgrimage” and “content tourism,” the report noted.

“In the coming days we will take decisions to reduce our public deficit. We have to take new ones,” he said in a speech to a conserva-tive think-tank.

“We will take decisions on structural reforms, some of them very significant -- some of them in July and others afterwards,” he added.

Anxiety over Spain’s finances rose this week, driving up its borrow-ing costs to danger levels. Economists see this as a warning sign for the rest of the eurozone amid fears that the debt crisis could spread.

Reports emerged that the government would next week announce more tough budget cuts, on top of measures passed this year that aim to save tens of billions of euros.

Rajoy is due to address parliament on Wednesday about a huge bailout for Spain’s banks, agreed last month by its eurozone partners who offered a credit line of up to 100 billion euros ($122 billion).

He urged quick action by European Union leaders to make good on a deal they struck on June 29 to tackle the eurozone crisis, which included an agreement to let eurozone bailout funds recapitalise ail-ing banks directly. Rajoy they had reached important agreements that were good for Europe.

“But what will really determine their success is that they turn into concrete realities, in a supple, quick and effective way,” Rajoy said.

“Europe must fulfill the accords as swiftly as possible.”

WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama said Saturday the United States needs to do more than just reclaim jobs lost to the re-cession, as he called for rebuilding the economy to make it secure for future generations.

“Our mission isn’t just to put people back to work - it’s to rebuild an economy where that work pays; an economy in which everyone who works hard has the chance to get ahead,” Obama said in his radio and Internet address. The comment came after new Labor Department sta-tistics showed that the June jobless rate was unchanged from May at 8.2 percent, with 12.7 million people in the ranks of the unemployed.

The United States added only 80,000 jobs in June, the third month of weak jobs growth amid a sluggish economy that has kept hiring on hold, the department data made public on Friday showed.

The figure was far below what is needed just to keep pace with growth in the labor force, signaling no relief in sight for an unemploy-ment rate that has held above 8.0 percent for more than three years.

The disappointing report toughened the challenge ahead for President Barack Obama, who is fighting to keep his job in the November presiden-tial election against charges by Republican challenger Mitt Romney that his administration has failed to revive the economy. Romney argued that Friday’s weak US jobs report was proof President Obama’s economic policies were failing, saying “this kick in the gut has got to end.”

In Asia, Australia and South Africa, townhouses are generally found in complexes. Large com-plexes often have high security, resort facilities such as swimming pools, gyms, parks and playground equipment. Typically, a townhouse has a Strata Title, i.e. a type of title where the common property

(landscaped area, public corridors, building structure etc.) is owned by a corporation of individual owners and the houses on the property are owned by the individual owners.

According Creative Director Indi-vidwagrup Properti, Aliva Abdullah, Balinese people are looking for more secure place and better looking house

so they choose townhouse. She said this kind of trend also happen in other big cities, such as Jakarta.

Besides, added Aliva, townhouse using less land and create more dynamic environment so people that living in it can experience something different. Bali, she said, is very suitable to pursue this kind of housing because land become scare and expensive.

She explained that Individwagrup now have Townhouse project in Kerobokan, Bali. The project that calls Iare Townhouse consists of 95 houses on 1.2 hectares land. There

are several types of housing that consumers can pick, such as studio apartment, house, and stores.

The project will be start on 2012 and hopefully will be finish on the next two years. She mentioned that studio apartment units have been sold out meanwhile from 70 houses that they plan to build; around one third has been sold.

“We try to offer something differ-ent both to domestic and foreigners that live in Bali. So far, we have many interest people that call and make res-ervation to check the location. During our exhibition in Jakarta, we also have

many transaction and happy to say that all the studio apartment in our project have been sold out,” Aliva said.

When met in the site of the project located on Jalan Kesambi, Kerobokan, she explained that Iare relatively different from other hous-ing that being built in Bali. She said that Iare townhouse expose greener area and imitates villa style with af-fordable price thanks to its architect Gregorius Supie. KUTA - Bali’s Kuta Beach was jam-packed with action on Saturday, for the start of the annual Quiksilver King of the Groms South East Asian Final. Over 80 under-16-year-old boy grommets taking to the waves at Halfways to compete for their place in Sunday’s run for the coveted “King of the Groms” SEA title, and 16-under-16-year-old girls joining up for their first-ever Roxy Jam in Indonesia.

In perfect weather conditions and with 2-3 foot waves on offer, a frothing mix of boy and girl groms from Indonesia, Australia, Brazil,

Japan, the USA, and a few other countries gathered on the beach to hang out, have a fun day in the sun, and do a little competing to see who could catch the best waves, impress the judges, and get through their heats so they could come back tomorrow and do it all again in the race for the final.

Last year’s King of the Groms SEA Final had 78 contestants, and this year’s signups trumped that by a significant margin, due primarily to the addition of the Roxy Jam that added 16 girls to the 81 boys, mak-ing for a record setting 97 entries. There were so many contestants

signing up that 8 trial heats had to be run in order to parse down the boy’s field for the 64-man heat draw.

Of course there was the serious side of the competition, as there is the significant prize of the KOG crown, the trip to France to compete in the KOG International Final, and a brand new Yamaha motorbike at stake, but it was the camaraderie and fun that was the most evident during the day, as the kids ate their lunch from banana leave wrappers, had lots of water and juice to drink, and did fun stuff like dressing up in Sumo outfits and wrestling on the beach, dragging Coca-Cola trash

cans around the beach picking up trash, cheering and razzing their friends who either lost or won their heats, and of course going out and tearing up some waves!

On the list of standouts in the boy’s competition were Riski Eka, Rio Waida and his brother Ryuki, along with Komang Sastrawan and Raju Sena. Last year’s runner up Angga Bayu and equal third finisher Jeren Kering both made their heats today to advance to the man on man Round 4, so look for an exciting finale as these future superstars light up Kuta Beach with their best ever performances in search of the King

of the Groms crown. In the Roxy Jam after six heats

of fun waves in the hot Kuta sun the finalists were decided, and it looks to be Taina Izquiredo, Kailani Johnson, Cinta Hansel, and Julika meeting tomorrow to decide who will get the number one spot on the podium.

The King of the Groms SEA Final is being held during the 2nd annual Bali’s Big Eco Weekend, a combined effort on the part of Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and Quiksil-ver Indonesia to educate the local and national public and heighten the awareness of the environmental issues facing Bali today.

JAKARTA - Indonesia has failed to assist several boats in trouble near its shores in the past month, with observers saying it has neither the ability nor the inclination to save asylum seekers stranded at sea.

Australia has repeatedly been forced to lead rescue missions off Java island, and on Wednesday dispatched rescue ships after a distress call from a rickety vessel stuck in rough seas.

The Australian navy rescued more than 160 people on the boat, which ran into trouble just 63 nautical miles off Java in the same stretch of waters where an estimated 90 people drowned on June 21.

Australia had alerted Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) about the earlier boat two days before it capsized.

But Basarnas failed to reach the vessel, forcing Australian rescuers to intervene and save the remaining 110 on board. Four died when another vessel capsized barely a week later.

“Indonesia is still reluctant to carry out this kind of rescue operation, so the emergency response is slow,” Bantarto Bandoro from Indonesia’s National Defence University told AFP.

“Unlike Australia, Indonesia seems to have no standard operating pro-cedure, so when something happens at sea, the coordination is all very ad hoc, and the different agencies like to blame each other when something goes wrong.”

Bandoro acknowledged that Indonesian leaders lacked the political will to tackle the issue, as they essentially see the issue as an Australian problem.

“The attitude of Indonesian politicians is they’d prefer to mind their own business. They tend to see asylum-seekers as Australia’s problem.”

Basarnas admits it is dismally ill-equipped for the rough Indian Ocean stretch between Indonesia and Australia’s Christmas Island, which is closer to Java than mainland Australia.

“We still lack the equipment and skills to carry out these operations well. Australia has been assisting us in recent years, but we know we need to improve our response,” said Basarnas chief Daryatmo, who like many Indonesians uses only one name.

He said that Basarnas had only two boats on Java equipped for rough seas, which on Wednesday also slowed down Australian rescue efforts.

Indonesia does little to patrol the southern waters that asylum seekers traverse to reach Australia as the country has “no security threats there”, defence ministry spokesman Hartind Asrin said.

“Our maritime security is focused mainly in the northern part in the Malacca Strait (between Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore) because we have issues with pirates there,” Asrin said.

Asylum seekers mostly from the Middle East and Sri Lanka have for years used Indonesia as a transit hub and board rickety fishing vessels to make the perilous journey, with many drowning along the way.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard agreed in Darwin in northern Australia this week to boost cooperation in rescue missions.

Indonesia accepted four Hercules aircraft decommissioned by Australia to help the country better monitor its own waters. Canberra gave Indonesia five police boats in 2002 for the same cause.

“The Indonesian search and rescue authorities have neither the capac-ity nor the inclination to go chasing asylum-seeker boats that have left Indonesia. They’re happy to see the back of them”, Tony Kevin, a former Australian diplomat who has written books on refugee boat disasters, told AFP.

That was the case in the June 21 incident, he said, adding that the disaster was a “result of Australia simply batting the problem to Indonesia”.

“Occasionally we seem to sit on our hands, pass the message to the Indo-nesian search and rescue authority and say ‘they’re in your search and rescue zone, you handle it’,” he said. “When that happens, people usually die.”

While asylum seekers rate little mention in Indonesia’s political dis-course, they are an explosive long-standing political issue in Australia that dominated elections in 2001 and again in 2010, which saw a record 6,555 arrivals.

Gillard has tried to tout a “regional solution”, but plans for offshore processing centres and a refugee-swap deal with Malaysia have been repeatedly shot down in Australia’s parliament and high court.

“We are part of the global economy. If they are affected, so are we. Therefore, we must partici-pate. If we stay idle we can also be affected,” he said.

He said it would be better if the loan would not only be distributed to the European region but also other regions such as Africa which also needs funds to push their economies.

“The IMF needs US$430 bil-lion to be injected to the system to overcome financial difficulties but it is hoped the loan will not be used fully for Europe but should also be given to Africa and other poor countries in need,” he said.

He said the loan would be one of the topics to be discussed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and IMF executive

director Christine Lagarde during the latter`s visit here from July 8 to 10 July.

Finance Minister Agus Mar-towardojo had earlier said the government is still considering to give a loan to IMF to strengthen its capital.

“It (the loan) is now still being processed internally, which will be given to maintain the world`s economy so that it would not be-come worse and threaten overall conditions,” he said.

He said the capital was need-ed by the IMF and it reflected Indonesia`s good conditions as well as commitment to safeguard-ing the global economy from the crisis in Europe.

He said the loan would not be taken from the budget but would

be part of the country`s foreign exchange reserves.

“The loan we will give to the IMF will remain in the Indonesian balance sheet as part of its foreign exchange reserves recorded in the IMF,” he said.

One of the results of the G20 Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico, recently is commitment from participating countries to support sufficient financial supply for IMF to carry out its global surveillance function.

For that G20 leaders agreed to fully support the agreement made by their financial ministers and central bank governors to give an additional operational fund of US$430 to the IMF collected based on bilateral arrangement between donors and the IMF.

JAKARTA - An orangutan who became the star attraction of an Indonesian zoo for her penchant for puffing on cigarettes will be forced to quit cold turkey, a conservationist said Saturday.

Visitors began throwing lit ciga-rettes into the cage of 15-year-old Tori when it was five, and the fe-male orangutan had developed an addiction over the years, Centre for Orangutan Protection coordinator Daniek Hendarto said.

“We are working with the zoo’s management to try and move her to an island, in a big lake in the middle of the zoo, away from the other orangutans and where visitors can’t toss her anymore cigarettes,” Hendarto told AFP.

He said Tori’s parents had also been smokers, adding that orang-utans easily mimic human behav-iour, including smoking.

News of the smoking orangutan spread quickly 10 years ago, attract-ing more visitors to the Taru Jurug

Tori, a 15-year-old orangutan, smokes a cigarette inside her cage at Satwa Taru Jurug zoo in Solo, Central Java, Indo-nesia, Friday, July 6, 2012. Zookeepers said they plan to move Tori, who learned to smoke about a decade ago by imitating people, away from visitors who regularly throw lit cigarettes into her cage so they can watch and photograph her puffing away and exhaling smoke.

“Until we get approval from the zoo to move her, a guard has been placed outside her cage to make sure she doesn’t smoke and she is undergoing therapy. She will have to go cold turkey,” he said.

TOKYO - Japan is considering buying a chain of islands at the centre of a bitter territorial dispute with China and Taiwan, Prime Min-ister Yoshihiko Noda said Saturday, sparking an angry response from Beijing.

The islands in the East China Sea are called Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese. “There is no question that the Senkakus are an integral part of our country’s territory in terms of history and international law,” Noda told reporters.

“There exists no territorial issue or ownership issue as Japan is in ef-fective control of the islands.

“From the viewpoint of how to maintain and manage the Senkakus in a calm and stable manner, we are making comprehensive studies on the matter by keeping in touch with the owner.”

Chinese foreign ministry spokes-man Liu Weimin said Japan had no right to purchase the islands.

“The Chinese government will continue to take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the sovereign rights of the Diaoyu Islands and

adjacent islets,” he said according to the Xinhua state news agency.

“The Diaoyu Islands and their adjacent islets have been inherent parts of Chinese territory since ancient times, and China has indis-putable historical and jurisprudential evidence for this.”

Noda’s comments came after a report in the Asahi Shimbun said the government on Friday informed Tokyo’s governor Shintaro Ishihara of its plan to buy three of the islands from their private Japanese owner.

In April, Ishihara announced he was in talks to buy the three islands -- Uotsurijima, Kitakojima and Mi-namikojima -- claiming that Japan was not doing enough to protect the territory. The chain includes two other islands and an outcropping of rocks. The influential daily said senior government officials were already negotiating with the own-ers, the Kurihara family, hoping to finalise the nationalisation plan by the end of the year.

The Tokyo metropolitan govern-ment said it had already collected more than 1.3 billion yen ($16.3 million) in donations from across the country to fund the purchase.

The demonstrators, including students, leftists, anarchists and union members, shouted slogans criticizing Pena Nieto’s Institu-tional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, and the electoral authority.

Pena Nieto won Sunday’s elec-tion by almost 7 percentage points, according to the official count, re-turning the PRI to presidential power after 12 years in the wilderness.

The PRI previously ruled Mexico for seven decades, dur-ing which time it was accused of rigging elections and repressing protesters.

“The PRI threatens many peo-ple and buys others with a couple of tacos,” said Manuel Ocegueda, a 43-year-old shop worker par-ticipating in the march.

Pena Nieto is due to take pow-er in December, replacing Felipe

Calderon of the conservative Na-tional Action Party, or PAN.

The constitution barred Cal-deron from running for a second term. The PAN candidate, Jo-sefina Vazquez Mota, finished third, with many voters dissatis-fied over relentless drug violence and sluggish growth.

Leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador finished in second place, but has refused to concede, ac-cusing Pena Nieto of stealing the presidency.

Pena Nieto denies any wrong-doing and PRI officials say they could sue Lopez Obrador over the accusations.

Lopez Obrador was runner-up as well in the 2006 presidential race, but by a much closer mar-gin, after which he also said there had been fraud and led major

protests. He has so far stayed away

from protests this year, but said he was collecting evidence of fraud to give to officials.

On Saturday, Lopez Obrador called on the PAN to join forces with him to file a legal challenge to the election.

Mexico’s electoral tribunal has until September to evaluate any complaints and officially name Pena Nieto as the next Mexican president.

Pena Nieto, 45, a former state governor, promises to reform Mex-ico’s oil industry and labor laws to kick-start growth and boost security spending to reduce the country’s high murder rate.

Calderon has congratulated Pena Nieto on his electoral victory, along with dozens of world leaders.

Jaya, a trader who helped the evacuation said the evacuation process took place for about half an hour. “Quite a lot of soil hoarded them for so long,” he explained. Aside from the three victims, another worker who shocked to saw the incident, Sujana, had fainted and got serious treatment in Wangaya Hospital.

According to Cahyono, all the victims were from Cirebon. Related to the incident, Cahyono suspected the avalanche happened due to shaking of passing vehicles on Jalan Sulawesi. “It is unlikely to be caused by the engine shaking of heavy equipment because it was operated at far location from the avalanche site. Possibly it was caused by the shaking of passing vehicles. Moreover, the former filling soil was unstable,” he explained.

Due to such condition, police immediately set up police line around the project worth IDR 6.6 billion. A number of police officers also prohibited media crews from lingering to take pictures at the scene. The police officers worried if subsequent avalanche would happen. Chief of Denpasar Metro Police, Wayan Sunarta, when asked for his confirmation last Saturday said that based on preliminary investigation it was found negligence in the secu-rity standards. “One of them is not wearing safety helmet. It is the standard, including the examination of licensing documents. We are still investigating it further,” he explained. According to him, until Saturday afternoon seven witnesses were testified related to the incident.

Related to the incident, Denpasar Municipality would summon the project partner PT Sekar Kedaton Nusantara from Surabaya as the party working on the project. “We will also ask for the report of Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP) about this incident,” said Regional Secretary of Denpasar, AA Ngurah Rai Iswara. Related agencies such as the Denpasar Transportation Agency had also been instructed to go to location including the other agencies. “As soon as we received the information of the incident, we immediately came down to the scene,” he said.

His party could not ascertain the cause of such incident whether it was caused by negligence of the workers or by other factors. “We are still examin-ing the cause,” he explained. Would Denpasar Municipality make a special investigation? To the question, Rai Iswara said that his party was still focus-ing on the provision of treatment to the workers hospitalized. For medical expenses of victims, Deputy Mayor of Denpasar, IGN Jaya Negara, who directly visited the victims in hospital on Saturday, said he would check first the terms of contract agreement with the partner. “Obviously, we have asked in order the victims could be given maximum service,” he said. After hitting a backhand winner on match point, she fell onto her back to the grass. She then rose with a grin as big sister Venus — another five-time Wimbledon champion — smiled and applauded, along with the rest of the crowd.

After shaking hands with Radwanska, Williams climbed into the box where her family was seated. She hugged her father, Venus, their mother and others.

“I can’t even describe it. I almost didn’t make it,” said Williams, who has battled health issues since winning the 2010 Wimbledon title. “A few years ago, you know, I was in the hospital, and now I’m here again. It’s so worth it, and I’m so happy.”

Out on court, Williams had little trouble at the start, using her hard serve and powerful ground-strokes to win the first five games and run Rad-wanska all over the grass.

Radwanska, who was playing in her first Grand Slam final, has been ill with a respira-tory problem, making it difficult for her to speak. In the second set

and already down a break, the third-seeded Pole was coughing and blowing her nose during a changeover.

But she broke Williams in the next game to even the score at 4-4, and then broke again to win the second set.

Williams responded in the third set, breaking twice and serving out to win another major title.

Williams finished with 58 winners to 13 for Radwanska, including an edge of 20-3 in the final set. Williams lost only eight points on her first serve.

“Aggie played so well. That’s why she has had such a great career, and so young,” Williams told the crowd. “You guys should give her another round of applause because she’s amazing and she did an amazing job today.”

The match was played with the Centre Court roof open, and it was delayed by rain for a short time after the first set.

“Serena played too good today, but I’m just very happy to be here in the final,” Radwanska said. “It was not my day. I’ll try just next year. We’ll see.”

PARIS — Guard Tony Parker can play for European runner-up France in the Olympic Games after San Antonio Spurs medics agreed he has fully recovered from an eye injury.

Parker suffered a scratch to his cornea in a nightclub fight in New York last month.

“The two ophthalmologists (from the Spurs) confirmed the opinion of the French doctor who operated on Tony Parker, and the two Swiss specialists who also examined the player last Thursday, and indicated that he can resume playing,” the French Basketball Federation said on Fri-day, adding Spurs coach Gregg Popovich also gave his accord.

Parker is joining up with the French squad in Orleans and he could briefly fea-ture in a warmup match against England on Saturday.

France’s first game at the Olympics is against the United States on July 29.

“It is great news and a relief for the whole France team,” coach Vincent Col-let said. “I spoke with Tony on the phone and he sounded very happy — and also

relieved — about this development. It was a difficult and alarming situation for everyone.”

Parker was included on the team’s 12-man Olympic roster as he waited to see whether his injury would fully heal in time.

He suffered the injury when shards of flying glass caught his left eye fol-lowing a nightclub fight involving singer Chris Brown and members of hip-hop star Drake’s entou-rage.

Parker scored 26 points for France when it lost last year’s European final 98-85 to Spain.

Former France captain Didier Deschamps is in talks with the French Football Federation (FFF) about becoming the national team’s new manager, a source close to the talks revealed Satur-day.

“We are in full negotiation. It’s a step further, but it’s not yet an outcome. We are in the phase of entry into talks. If there is an outcome and an agreement, I think it won’t be before tomorrow (Sunday),” the source added.

The development comes a week after Laurent Blanc’s decision to step down from the post following two years in charge after being unable to reach an agreement with FFF president Noel Le Graet on a new contract .

Deschamps became increasingly linked as a candidate to fill the vacancy after quitting his position as coach of Marseille last Monday.

The 43-year-old -- who captained France to the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 titles -- had asked Marseille to be released from his post on May 23, though he still had two years left on his contract.

His initial request to leave had nothing to do with the France post as Blanc was still in charge, but following Blanc’s departure he quickly became the bookies favourite to take over Les Bleus.

Le Graet then hinted during a press conference on Tuesday that Deschamps was his preferred choice to take over the reins, 24 hours after he had stepped down from the Stade Velodrome hotseat.

“He is part of a short-list,” Le Graet said. “It’s a very good choice (...) The desire to work together is real, I’ve known him for forever.”

Should the FFF appoint Deschamps, his first match would come against Copa America champions Uruguay on August 15 at Le Havre. France then start their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign on September 7 against Finland in a group that also contains defending champions Spain.

Blanc stepped down after guiding France to the Euro 2012 quarter-finals where they lost to eventual winners Spain.

Defending champion Cadel Evans of Australia finished sec-ond, with Wiggins in third only 2secs behind as Sky’s pace on the final, 5.9 km climb to the race’s first hilltop finish exacted a costly toll on some contenders.

BMC leader Evans, who made a futile bid for the stage win only to be passed by Froome in the final 100 metres, is now second overall at 10sec behind Wiggins.

Italian Vincenzo Nibali of Liquigas, considered the biggest challenger to Evans and Wiggins, is third at 16 with Estonian Rein Taaramae of Cofidis in fourth at 32.

“It’s a great day for the team,” said Wiggins, who started the first day in the hills in second place only 7sec behind Fabian Cancellara.

“I wanted to go for the yellow jersey and for Chris to win the stage but I had to tell him to slow down towards the end to keep something for the finish.”

Ahead of another, arguably trickier day in the Swiss Jura on Sunday and the first of two long time trials on Monday, Wiggins said it was not too early to take the race lead.

He said: “I don’t think it’s ever too early to take the lead of the Tour de France. It’s the yellow jersey.

“It’s the hardest and biggest race in the world. It’s huge for me, something I’ve dreamt about since I was a kid.”

Team Sky came to the race with a number of talented climb-ers and their high pace-setting from the bottom of the steep climb to the ski station finish line was too much for some.

Michael Rogers led the way from the first, steep pitches and with 3.8 km of the 199km re-maining Australian compatriot Richie Porte took over at the front.

Nairobi-born Froome then took up the duties of pacing Wig-gins with 2.1 km to race, drop-ping Russian Denis Menchov among others in the process. At that point, only Evans, Wiggins,

BERNE - Vladimir Klitschko retained his world heavyweight titles when he knocked down challenger Tony Thompson in the sixth round of a one-sided contest on Saturday.

The 36-year-old Ukrainian, who knocked out Thompson when they met four years ago, extended his un-beaten run to 16 fights, his last defeat coming when he challenged Lamon Brewster for the WBO title in 2004.

Klitschko, who has won 58 and lost three of his professional bouts, holds the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO titles while his older brother Vitali holds the WBC title.

Thompson was never in the con-test and was floored for the first time in the fifth round with a big right hook.

The American, the mandatory chal-lenger nominated by the IBF, survived the count but looked groggy and struggled to hang on until the bell.

Dr Steelhammer wasted no time in finishing off the 40-year-old in the next round, knocking him over again with a flurry of punches to the head, prompt-ing the referee to stop the fight.

“I didn’t have a doubt from the beginning of the fight that I would defend my titles,” Klitschko told reporters.

“It was really difficult to land the punches. He’s very sneaky, he sees the punches, he never loses eye con-tact which makes him super alert.

“I felt I had the strength, speed, condition and power,” he added.

Thompson, who suffered his third defeat in 39 fights, praised his opponent.

“I came up short for the second time,” the American said.

“Vladimir is a great champion and his physical attributes showed in the ring tonight.

“I really feel I can beat any other heavyweight in the world, but if you can’t be the champions...”

Mali midfielder Seydou Keita has quit Barcelona after his four-year contract ended, having won 14 titles with the team, the club said late Saturday.

“Seydou Keita has announced this evening that he won’t be staying at the club next season,” said a statement pub-lished on the club’s website.

“FC Barcelona thanks Seydou Keita for his services to the club over the years and wishes him professional and personal success in the future.”

The Barcelona sports press reported that Keita, 32, was planning to move to Chinese club Dalian Aerbin.

Keita previously played for French clubs Marseille, Lorient and Lens before moving to Spain where he played for Seville for one season.

He moved to Barcelona in 2008 as the first signing by coach Pep Guardiola, who quit at the end of last season.

Race favourite Bradley Wiggins took command of the Tour de France Saturday as Sky team-mate Christopher Froome secured a deserved maiden victory on stage seven.

Nibali and Taaramae could hold on.

Evans then made a move for victory with just over 350 metres to go but on one of the steepest sections of the climb Froome eased past the Australian to come over the finish with room to spare.

“I’m really happy because I didn’t expect this, not in the Tour de France,” said Froome, who claimed his maiden Grand Tour stage win on last year’s Tour of Spain where he finished runner-up just ahead of Wiggins.

Former podium finisher Frank Schleck, meanwhile, was among the Radioshack riders dropped relatively early, along with Ger-man teammate Andreas Kloden, American Chris Horner and, as expected, overnight race leader Cancellara.

RadioShack’s best placed rider is now Spanish veteran Haimar Zubeldia in fifth at 59.

Schleck, however, was not alone in licking his wounds as Belgian Jurgen van den Broeck of

Lotto (1:52), Spaniard Alejandro Valverde of Movistar (2:19) and Dutchman Robet Gesink of Rabobank (2:53) all saw their podium hopes crushed.

One of the day’s other big win-ners, meanwhile, was Taaramae.

His encouraging fifth place finish at 19sec adrift allowed him to dispossess American Tejay Van Garderen (BMC) of the white jersey for the best placed rider aged 25 and under.

“It’s a great day for me. I hope to take the white jersey all the way to Paris,” said Taaramae, who is now fourth overall at 42.

“Who knows, maybe I can claim a top five finish on the way. We might be a small team but we’re not lacking ambition.”

Sunday’s eighth stage is an-other day of short, intense climbs from the Vosges to the Swiss Jura, but whether that can soothe Cancellara’s pains at losing the lead remains to be seen.

“It’s been a hard first week and we’ll be glad to get to the rest day,” said the Swiss.

While the Spaniard took the honours, his Honda teammate Casey Stoner, destined to take second, crashed out with two bends of the final lap remaining to dent his hopes of defending his world title before he heads into retirement.

The main beneficiary of Ston-er’s spill was Yamaha’s former champion Jorge Lorenzo who was gifted the runner up spot to move clear at the top of the riders stand-ings on 160 points.

First corner carnage in As-sen last weekend had checked Lorenzo’s title charge with Stoner arriving at Sachsenring level on points with the Spaniard.

Alvaro Bautista was found guilty for that spill and as a punishment the Honda rider was consigned to the back of the grid here.

In contrast to Saturday’s wet weather qualifying, a dry track greeted the grid headed by Stoner on pole but the Australian was beaten to the first corner by Ped-rosa, who started in third.

France wi l l be missing Chicago Bulls center Joa-kim Noah, who is still recov-ering from a left ankle in-jury he sus-tained dur-ing the NBA playoffs.

Supie has thought carefully about the functionality of every spaces that being build and doesn’t afraid to have more space for green plantation. (kmb18)

Bali Post

(jay)

On display will be special-issue, limited-edition playthings and

books made just for the pop-culture fest.

Bali PostDENPASAR - Suppose to be an end of spending

his holiday in Bali, due to oxygen shortage, Calson (30), from Singapore collapsed during diving in Sanur Beach. (san)

BERLIN - German Chancel-lor Angela Merkel will make her first official visit to Indonesia next week for talks with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and business leaders, her spokesman said.

Steffen Seibert told a regular briefing that the leader of Europe’s top economy would embark on the brief trip Monday and return to

Berlin Wednesday, as the eurozone debt crisis rumbles on.

“She will be welcomed to Indo-nesia, the most populous Muslim country in the world, on Tuesday by President Yudhoyono with military honours,” he said.

“Afterwards, they will hold talks on bilateral, regional and global issues.”

Merkel, who took office in 2005, will meet business leaders, reporters

and rights activists, as well as the chief justice of the constitutional court.

She is also to visit the site of the country’s tsunami early-warning sys-tem, which was built with German as-sistance, as well as a Protestant church and a mosque. Government sources described Indonesia as a comparably stable developing country with robust prospects but expressed concerns about frequent human rights viola-tions in the resources-rich province

of West Papua.Merkel aims to take up issues of

regional security such as the fight against piracy in the Strait of Mal-acca linking the Indian Ocean with the Pacific, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

However “talks on arms deals are not on the agenda,” a senior Merkel aide said, adding that no specific trade pacts or business contracts were expected to be signed either.

Seibert said that there were no plans for Merkel to hold talks with visiting International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde, who will be in Jakarta on July 8-10.

Bilateral trade relations have developed briskly in recent years with Germany exporting 3.4 billion euros ($4.2 billion) in goods and services to Indonesia in 2011. Im-ports from the country were valued at 3.3 billion euros.

Avalanche disaster occurred in the underground parking project on Jalan Sulawesi Denpasar on Saturday (Jul 7).

According to one of the witnesses, Cahyono, it came to pass around 3:30 p.m. local time. At that time, some workers were installing stone, while others were installing blocks. Unexpectedly, the edge dredged up a few days before suddenly ava-lanched and hit three workers. “The edge is about 3 meters high. Previously, there were no signs if the edge will avalanche. Before the victims worked there, I happened to work there a few days ago,” he explained.

Once the avalanche occurred, Cahyono and some other workers tried to rescue with heavy equipment at the site. “Before the assistance arrived, we imme-diately evacuate them with the equipment existing around us. Unfortunately, when we could evacuate, Sanan was found dead and then immediately taken to Wangaya Hospital,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the two other victims namely Satir and Dadang were found in critical condition and im-mediately rushed to Sanglah Hospital. Based on lat-est information, Satir could not be saved or died.
