NGELAWANG parade in the arena of 32nd Bali Arts Festi-val (BAF), last Sunday (Jul 4), was closed by attractive appear-ances presented by envoys from Jembrana, Denpasar, Badungand Karangasem Regency. Art presentation of which most sup-porters seemed to remain very young was looked forward byvisitors of BAF. Despite the heavy rains had flushed the areamaking the implementation of Ngelawang Parade delayed, theaudiences were loyally waiting for the rain to stop so they couldsee the art performance until the end.

Apparently, the waiting of audience was not in vain. Eachart envoy from four regencies successfully presented a veryintriguing art attraction. Ngelawang Parade belonging to thelast round was also very thrilling and suspenseful all at onceand raised religious-magical nuances of a very strong attrac-tion because the even was also graced by ngurek (stabbing krisdagger into the chest) and trance. On that occasion, they alsocarried sacred effigies either in the form of sanctified barongor rangda at the arena of BAF.

Splendor of Ngelawang Parade last Sunday was opened byan attractive show by Astha Gina Art Studio entrusted to be-come the envoy of Jembrana. Community of artists from thewestern end of Bali performed a composition of barong ket inthe story entitled Drati Krama. It revealed the story of I WayanBuyar taking a variety of ways to realize his malicious intent towin the love of Ni Kusuma Sari, the daughter of Ki DukuhSiladri. At the end of performance, the art envoy of Jembranafeatured ngurek attraction along with trance.

After that, it was the time for the art envoy of Denpasar City, featuring the show of barong landung (couple of barong in tallhuman figure) entitled Dalem Balingkang. The simple and briefngelawang art composition aimed at creating awareness of Baliresidents to avoid love affairs because it could trigger disas-trous and long-sufferings in the household life.

Coolness scattered by the envoys of Denpasar City was sud-denly turning hotter as soon as the cultural envoy of BadungRegency showed off the barong ket and white –and-red pat-terned barong landung. They played the story entitled PastuDalem Nusa (A Curse of Dalem Nusa) telling the story on thedeath of Gusti Jelantik Bogol by Ki Pencok Saang weapon. Thisstory aimed at creating awareness of mankind that there wasmore enduring power in the world than the power of God Al-mighty. Similar to the appearance of the Jembrana envoy, theBadung artist community also showed off a very tense ngurekattraction. In the final session, the art envoys from KarangasemRegency presented ngelawang attractions by presenting barongNongkling (barong of human puppet). They carried the playentitled Yadnya Meupa Ayu Bumi aiming for neutralizing theBhuta Dungulan and keeping the human beings away from theinfluence of evil spirits that can harm human life.

Observers of Ngelawang Parade, Sang Ketut Sandhiyasa andGede Oka Surya Negara admitted to be amazed when witness-ing the enthusiasm of BAF visitors to watch the NgelawangParade. The area around Denpasar Art Center used as the venueof Ngelawang Parade was always crowded. Meanwhile, in theupcoming BAF, both observers expected the BAF committeecould provide a better and representative space of the apprecia-tion for the event of Ngelawang Parade. By doing so, the artistswere able to show off their art performance perfectly withoutbeing squeezed by the audience.

“In addition, the committee also needs to create a barrier forthe audience so that they can not push into the arena of perfor-mance. With this barrier, artists can perform optimally, whileviewers can also appreciate the art performance better,” sug-gested Sang Ketut Sandhiyasa who among the connoisseurs ofarts in Bali is better known as Gede Tomat. Komorowski — who as speakerof parliament became acting headof state after the crash that killedthe president — is a key ally in theliberal Civic Platform party ofPrime Minister Donald Tusk. Ana-lysts said the liberals’ win wouldtest the Tusk government.

The liberals have underscoredthat Poland was alone in the 27-nation European Union in postingeconomic growth last year but saymore needs to be done to plug holesin state coffers.

In the wake of Hurricane Alex, beaches, shorelines and marshes laysmeared with thick patches of oil andthe sky was still filled with ominous, gray clouds. “This is definitely themost oil I’ve seen. So far,” said oneworker who declined to give his name.

Secluded within the silence ofDenpasar City, the Annual BaliArts Festival (BAF) has becomemore than a vivacious art extrava-ganza for Balinese artists and com-munity. Since few years ago, the artcelebration could have drawn theparticipation of other region acrossthe archipelago. Likewise, it con-jured up the interests of some for-eign art troupes to join. Therefore,BAF has turned into an internationalart rendezvous on a bijou island.

The one-month art season on BaliIsland definitely pampers the thirstand desire of art enjoyers. Since thisevent also presents classical perfor-mance, it simultaneously takes theminto the past time, an age that theydid not experience in person. It isjust like a flash back to the ancientart grandeurs.

are eager to see the attraction andbring something unique to theirhome. Is there anything left? Yes,encourage them that Bali will havemore attractions or destinations tobe explored.

At the same time, the event alsopromotes the potential of regencies.Other than arts and crafts, new tour-ist destinations could be ideally in-troduced through this grandioseevent. By doing so, there will bemore choices to be visited by guestsand the destinations are not thoseof very same things. As a result, local people will have more job op-portunities.

This endeavor can be synchro-nized with the local cultural pres-ervation. Destination should beconsidered as a product and eachproduct has a particular life cycle. For instance, tourists visiting a des-tination should find a difference intheir second visit, at least withinfive years. The difference can bedone in terms of landscaping ar-rangement, services, additional at-traction or introduction of new des-tinations. If a product is not wellmanaged, it will immediately growmature and fall down and bepromptly forgotten. To get good ormaximal proceedings, it requires anice cooperation of related govern-ment agencies, private sector andlocal community. Government au-thority in combination with market-

ing management owned by privatesector certainly will yield a sweetfruit.

All regencies surely have theirtypicality. There are beautiful river-side, lakeside, verdant rice terrace, cool tropical garden, unique traditionor distinctive and delicious cuisine. They are initial potential capital. Ifcombined with selected cultural at-traction or local social activities, would engender an amazing attrac-tion. How to empower local farmers, fishermen and other workers in tour-ism activity directly or indirectlyshould become one of the purposesof this program. By doing so, theycould behave more naturally whenphotographed by tourists, notgrumble because they get nothingfrom their pose.

Those attractions can be a chal-lenging adventure, memorablelifestyle (honeymoon, wedding fes-tivity), pilgrimage or others. Typical-ity of the region should be well main-tained and give focus so that theynever become the same product asothers.

If new tourist destinations arelaunched every two years, within 10years there will be 18 additional prod-ucts offered to tourists. Of course, they will enrich the existing desti-nation and attractions. There are al-ways more reasons and inspirationfor tourists to come as Bali has some-thing new. Toyota Motor Corp. spokesmanPaul Nolasco said recalls in over-seas markets will follow soon, to-taling about 270,000 vehicles glo-bally. That includes: 138,000 ve-hicles in the U.S., 15,000 in Europe,10,000 in the Middle East, 6,000 inChina, 4,000 in Canada, and 8,000in other regions.

Toyota told the Japanese gov-ernment Monday it was recalling91,903 vehicles for flaws in thevalve springs, a crucial engine com-ponent, that could make the auto-mobile stall while in motion. “Weapologize for inconveniencing ourcustomers. We hope to fix the prob-lem soon,” Nolasco said.

The quality problem affectingtop-of-the-line products comes asToyota struggles to move on frommassive global recalls that startedin October. It already has recalledmore than 8.5 million vehicles forvarious problems, including stick-

The world’s top automakerwas fined a record $16.4 million inthe United States for responding tooslowly when the recall crisis erupted.

The latest woes come on topof a recall last week for 17,000Lexus hybrids after testing showedfuel can spill during a rear-end crash.

Analysts said Monday’s recalldid little to instill consumer confi-dence after Toyota President AkioToyoda, facing shareholders lastmonth, vowed to improve vehiclequality inspections.

“It is not doing a good job incommunicating a message aboutwhat exactly it is doing to beef upquality checks,” said ShotaroNoguchi, auto analyst with NomuraSecurities Co. in Tokyo. “So it ishard for people to believe Toyota istaking the customer’s view as it ispromising to do.”

The company announced thelatest quality problems last week. Some 180,000 of the defective au-tomobiles were sold overseas,138,000 of them in the United States.

No accidents or injuries havebeen reported because of the defect.About 220 complaints have beenreported.

Toyota also faces more than200 lawsuits in the U.S. tied to acci-dents involving defective automo-biles, the lower resale value ofToyota vehicles, and a drop in itsstock value. The Tokyo market re-acted with calm to Toyota’s recallnews. Toyota shares gained 0.5 per-cent to finish at 3,035 yen.

Associated Press Writer SOUTH DEERFIELD - Maxixe, a Bra-

zilian relative of the cucumber, is relativelyunknown in the U.S., but it may one daybe as common as cilantro as farmers andconsumers embrace more so-called ethnicvegetables.

Agriculture experts at the Universityof Massachusetts at Amherst and elsewhereare teaching farmers to grow non-nativevegetables that appeal to a growing mar-ket of African, Asian and Latin Americanimmigrants. These immigrants and theirchildren already account for more than one-third of produce sales in supermarkets, saidFrank Mangan, a plant and soil sciencesprofessor at UMass. And as other custom-ers become more familiar with ethnicfoods, experts expect sales to grow evenmore.

The number of Massachusetts farm-ers markets that carry ethnic vegetablesjumped by 25 percent in a year, to 202 lastyear, said Scott Soares, commissioner ofthe state’s Department of Agricultural Re-sources.

Bob Ehart, public policy director ofthe National Association of State Depart-ments of Agriculture, said the organizationdoesn’t track the popularity of ethnic crops, but the trend in Massachusetts appears tobe happening in other states as well.

ruled out on Sunday the risk of a new recession, after a week of softeconomic data fuelled market fears of a dreaded double-dip into anew slump. “I don’t think so at all,” Trichet told journalists whenasked if a double-dip recession was on the horizon.

“At a global level it is clear that we are experiencing a recov-ery, which is confirmed particularly in the emerging world but alsoin the industrialized world,” he said at an economics conference inthe south of France.

But he warned that growth could not be taken for granted inindustrialised countries, saying that “it depends on us, it dependson the capacity of the industrialized countries to reinforce confi-dence.” “This is the reason why it is so important that we havefiscal policies designed to reinforce confidence of households ... ofbusinesses ... of savers and of investors,” he said. Trichet also saidthat austerity drives being implemented in several European coun-tries would not hurt the recovery, as some top economists and USofficials have suggested. Global stocks suffered heavy losses andbonds rallied last week as a string of dismal economic data fromthe United States and China raised doubts about the health of theglobal economic recovery.

Agence France-PresseTAIPEI - Dozens of anti-China activists pro-

tested in Taiwan on Monday against a trade pactwith Beijing which they claim is the result of aconspiracy between the two governments.

The demonstrators assembled outside theisland’s parliament, currently in recess, chant-ing slogans against the Economic CooperationFramework Agreement (ECFA) and the island’sPresident Ma Ying-jeou.

“The ECFA is a conspiracy of the Ma Ying-jeou administration and the Chinese CommunistParty,” said Tsai Ting-kui, the leader of thecrowd, waving his fist in the air.

“If it is so good as Ma claims, then whydoesn’t he let the people decide whether or notthey want it?”

An anti-Chinese party has filed a secondreferendum proposal over ECFA after the firstwas turned down by the government’s Referen-dum Review Committee.

The group pledged to continue the protestover coming weeks as parliament mulls an extrasession to ratify the agreement.

The pact, signed last week in the southwestChinese city of Chongqing, is seen as the bold-est step yet towards reconciliation between theformer arch-foes, more than 60 years after theend of a civil war that drove them apart.

Farmers find opportunity in immigrant vegetablespaigns and federal farm legislation givingstates grants to expand specialty crop pro-duction, he said. There’s also been a greateremphasis on marketing specialty vegetables, with New York and New Jersey startingprograms aimed at selling produce to eth-nic groups.

Glen Hill, executive director of theMinnesota Food Association, noted thatcilantro was considered a specialty item 25years ago, but “now it’s on everything.” Bokchoy, a Chinese cabbage, also was onceconsidered exotic.

“Now, it’s another leafy green,” Hillsaid. His association helps Hmong, Kenyan,Mexican and other immigrant farmers adaptto U.S. agriculture and introduces them tolocal markets where they’ve been able tosell growing amounts of mustard greens, beans and other ethnic crops.

“We see a huge demand for it acrossthe board, from restaurants to small stores, big stores and farmers markets,” he said.

With maxixe (pronounced mah-SHEESH’), Mangan and others at UMassgrow chipilin (cheep-LEEN’), a legumefrom Mexico and Central America; jilo (hee-LOH’), an eggplant-like crop grown in Bra-zil and West Africa; and hierba mora (eer-BAH’ MOR-rah), a member of the tomatofamily.

They sell vegetables grown at their re-search farm to Whole Foods Market andother groceries in New York, Washington,

D.C., New Jersey, Rhode Island and elsewhere.UMass graduate students, including some fromLatin America, handle the marketing.

Mangan said UMass tries to assemble amarketing package for farmers that includewhere and how to sell their produce and how toprice it. The research farm tests ways to growvarious crops to take the risk out of farmers’work. Even if farmers grow only a few ethniccrops, they benefit by having a greater varietythat reduces the likelihood of serious financialproblems if one or two crops fail, Mangan said.

Bill Barrington, sales manager for the Pio-neer Valley Growers Association, a group of 30farmers in the Connecticut River Valley in west-ern Massachusetts, said ethnic crops represent asmall share of what they grow compared withsuch items as sweet corn, pepper and cucumber, but that could change as immigration increases.

“I don’t know if it’s going to be as big assummer squash or zucchini, but as the marketevolves it will be more important,” Barringtonsaid. Whole Foods Market buys some producefrom Mangan for what the supermarket chainssees as a growing market for ethnic crops. It alsoworks with farmers to spur production of veg-etables that have caught on with consumers, who’ve read about them or tried them in restau-rants, said Bill McGowan, Whole Foods’ re-gional produce coordinator in Cambridge, Mass.

“We tell (farmers) what’s selling,”McGowan said. “Farmers are always interestedin new and unique things. They’re interested inthings that can make it to market.”

Summit estimates “Eclipse” willclimb to around $181 million do-mestically by Monday. The moviealso has added $100.2 million in 42overseas markets.

“Eclipse” has found a wider fanbase than “New Moon,” with a big-ger percentage of males turning outfor the latest installment. Femalefans accounted for 80 percent of theaudience on “New Moon” but only65 percent of crowds for “Eclipse,”Summit reported.

The latest adaptation of StephenieMeyer’s best-selling novels,“Eclipse” continues the love triangleinvolving a broody teen (KristenStewart), her vampire sweetheart(Robert Pattinson) and her werewolfpal (Taylor Lautner).

The weekend’s other new wide re-lease, Paramount’s “The LastAirbender,” opened well with $40.7million to finish at No. 2 for the three-

“The Last Airbender” found asolid audience despite dreadful re-views from critics, who found theplot muddled and the dialoguestilted.

Disney’s animated smash “ToyStory 3,” which had been No. 1 theprevious two weekends, slipped tothird-place with $30.2 million, rais-ing its total to $289 million. “ToyStory 3” is about to pass last year’s“Up” at $293 million to become No.2 on the chart of Pixar Animation’sblockbusters. tured and divided, they lacked the keycode for making normal CCR5. Themodified cells were reinjected backinto the rodents, which were then ex-posed to HIV. Twelve weeks after in-fection, the animals had recoveredtheir stock of immune T-cells andtheir levels of HIV were very low.

But “control” mice that had notreceived the modified cells werehighly infected and their immunesystems weak. If the approach isfound to be safe and effective onhumans, it opens the way to creat-ing a long-term generation of HIV-

resistant T-cells in the body — inother words, a patient could suppressHIV without taking powerfulantiretroviral drugs.

The experiment headed by PaulaCannon of the University of South-ern California, Los Angeles, and re-ported in the journal Nature Biotech-nology, is the third avenue that hasopened up for CCR5 investigators .

Drugs that inhibit CCR5 are alreadybeing licensed as “salvage” therapy forpatients whose immune systems havebeen crippled by HIV. Doctors are alsotesting in trials on volunteers a CCRdelta 32 technique, but using T-cellsas opposed to stem cells.

Around two million people diedfrom AIDS in 2008, and 33.4 mil-lion were living with HIV, accord-ing to UN figures published lastNovember. The International AIDSConference, an event held once ev-ery two years, takes place in Viennafrom July 18-23.

“I don’t think you can talk aboutrevenge between two great teams. Both will be going all out to get to aWorld Cup final,” said Del Bosque.

“They recently set out to change a(style of) football which appeared tobe worn out and tired. They have man-aged to refresh the team since the Eu-ros and the proof of that is in theirshowings here.” “They have got a greatgroup together,” the former RealMadrid boss added.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazil coach Dunga was sacked on Sunday fol-lowing the team’s World Cup quarter-final exit with charismatic LuizFelipe Scolari, who won the title in 2002, immediately being tipped totake over. “The cycle of work started in 2006 and which culminated withthe elimination of Brazil in the World Cup in South Africa is finished,”said a statement from the Brazilian football confederation (CBF).

“The CBF announces the dismissal of the technical commission ofthe Brazilian team. The new commission will be announced at the end ofJuly.” Dunga, 46, who skippered Brazil to the 1994 World Cup, had beennational team coach since 2006. He had already said that he was intend-ing to step down after four years following the five-time champions 2-1defeat to Holland in the quarter-finals in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

However, on his arrival home on Sunday, Dunga did not rule out stay-ing in the job. “I am going to rest before meeting, in one or two weeks’time, the president of the CBF, Ricardo Teixeira to talk about it (extend-ing his stay in charge),” Dunga told a news conference before the CBFquickly shattered his optimism.

Brazilian media immediately started speculating on the identity ofDunga’s successor whose job will be guiding the team on home soil at2014 World Cup. The favourite is Scolari, who won the World Cup in2002, although he has ruled himself out saying he intends to honour hiscontract with Palmeiras which runs until 2012.

“I have a contractwith Palmeiras andit is here that I amgoing to work,”Scolari told ElDorado radio.

“It would be greatto finish my careercoaching a team atthe World Cup to bestaged in Brazil, butI cannot respond toany offer until after2012.” Other namesbeing mentioned areMano Menezes, cur-rently coach atCorinthians, and ex-AC Milan bossLeonardo. Jorginho, who was Dunga’sassistant in SouthAfrica, is also be-lieved to be in therunning.

Rooney, Ronaldo, now Messi - stars misfire in Cupcouldn’t produce the magic when itcounted, against the Germans in thequarterfinals. All 25 or younger andconsidered three of the world’s bestplayers, they were the World Cup’sbiggest disappointments.

For Rooney, it seemed a case of fa-tigue or injury — he had knee, ankleand groin problems over the last twomonths of his club season. Whateverthe cause, rarely did the 24-year-oldManchester United striker storm pastdefenders with a typically powerfulrun after a season in England in whichhe scored 34 goals to make up forRonaldo’s record transfer to RealMadrid.

Ronaldo’s lone goal — againstNorth Korea in a 7-0 rout — waslittle solace for a player hyped in awell-publicized commercial asPortugal’s savior.

Even with the captain’s armband, the 25-year-old forward did little toinspire his team. He rarely trackedback in defense, lost the ball whendribbling and looked a shadow ofthe player who was selected as theworld’s best in 2008.

That title went to Messi last yearafter he led Barcelona to an historicseries of national, European andworld club titles, and he continuedhis stellar performances with an as-

tonishing 47 goals for his team in the2009-10 season. The 23-year-oldforward has often been accused offailing to reproduce his best form forArgentina, and will have done littleto erase that charge in South Africa.

Diego Maradona has calledMessi his heir apparent. But in hissecond World Cup, Messi failed tofind the target and never conjuredthe magic of Maradona when hisnation needed him, fading out of thematch as Argentina was thrashed 4-0 by Germany. “To see Messi cry inthe dressing room, whoever saysthat he doesn’t feel pride for his shirtis stupid,” Maradona said.

POTCHEFSTROOM, South Africa – Spain coach Vicente del Bosque on Sunday saluted what he sawas a sea-change in Germany’s style of play ahead of the two countries’ World Cup semi-final on Wednes-day. Del Bosque said he did not believe the Germans would be treating the meeting in Durban as a revengemission for their Euro 2008 final loss to the Spanish as his opponents had clearly moved on.

group loss to Switzerland, despite find-ing goals hard to come by - with thenotable exception of five-goal DavidVilla. A young Germany side has incontrast hit four goals on three occa-sions while humiliating both Englandand Argentina. Del Bosque says theGermans have no reason to hark backto their painful loss of two years agoin Vienna.

“I don’t believe anyone looks backto the past and a sportsman alwayslooks forward,” he insisted. He refusedto be drawn on his tactics for stoppingthe German juggernaut. “This it notthe time to speak of the key to stop-ping Germany. I think we have to try

to keep faithful to our style and main-tain this competitive spirit which wehave shown in this championship.”

Del Bosque added he believed that“we have done things really well todate” aside from the Swiss result -where the Spaniards in any case domi-nated the game.

“We started off with the Swiss losswhich was very painful but since thenwe have posted four straight wins toreach the semi-finals,” said the coach.“I don’t think this is the time to reflectbut instead to keep on dreaming,”added Del Bosque, in the knowledgethat Spain have never reached a WorldCup final.

“But for sure after a difficult yearfor me to be back at my favorite tour-nament and to finish with the trophyis amazing for me. “It was very diffi-cult for me to be back at my best afterinjury. But I did it, so it is a very im-portant and emotional moment forme.”

Nadal has now won the FrenchOpen and Wimbledon in the same cal-ender year twice - a feat long regardedas the tennis holy grail before Nadalstarting to rip up the record books.

With just a few weeks between theend of the French Open and the startof Wimbledon, few players had everbeen able to adapt to the change fromslow clay courts to the faster grass sur-

“It didn’t happen since Bjorn Borgbut now in the last three years it hap-pened twice. How crazy is life?” Nadalsaid. “For sure it is difficult to playwell on grass after winning in RolandGarros.

Tellem wrote that Johnson, who couldhave signed as a free agent with anotherteam, chose to remain in Atlanta overChicago and New York, where he wouldhave been reunited with Mike D’Antoni, his former coach in Phoenix. In addition to the financial incentive, the Hawks have reached the secondround of the playoffs the past two years, and Tellem said Johnson believed win-ning in Atlanta “would be more mean-ingful”. “When the Hawks offered themaximum - six years - he happily recip-rocated,” Tellem wrote.

Ducati’s Casey Stoner, the onlyother threat to Lorenzo, ran wideat the start of lap six and spentmuch of the race unsuccessfullychallenging Pedrosa for what be-came second.

Lorenzo was thus left to cruiseto a five-second home victory, marking his fifth win from sevenstarts and handing him a 52 pointtitle lead over Pedrosa headinginto the German Grand Prix in twoweeks’ time.

“This is very special,” saidLorenzo, who lost out to team-mate Valentino Rossi at the finalturn of last year’s race. “After los-ing so closely last year I washappy but not completely so and

today I can say I am completelyhappy, winning here at my homerace.

“It was very difficult today be-cause it was so hot and the front tyrewas sliding a lot. I thought I wasgoing to have a big battle withDovizioso because he was pushingvery hard but then he crashed and Iwas alone; it was lucky for me be-cause then I was able to take it moregently to the finish.

“I think I rode a clever race to-day. I am so grateful to my team andto everyone at Yamaha andBridgestone because they are work-ing so hard to make our bike com-petitive at every track. I also wantto say thank you to all the fans thatcame to watch today, it is a greatfeeling for me to win here in frontof them all.” Lorenzo has taken ahat-trick of wins once before in hiscareer, in his 250cc days, and is thefirst Yamaha rider to take three winsfrom three poles since EddieLawson in 1986.

After running wide into turn oneon lap six of Sunday’s Catalan GrandPrix, Ducati’s Casey Stoner spentmost of the race trying to overtakeRepsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa.Pedrosa had also run wide at turnone, at the very start of the race, andthe battle between the rumoured2011 team-mates was initially forthird position, which then becamea fight for second when AndreaDovizioso fell.

But Stoner simply couldn’t finda way past, crossing the line 0.2secbehind Pedrosa to nonethelessclaim his second podium in a row.Race winner Jorge Lorenzo wasfive seconds in front.

“The mistake was my own fault.I got a bit too much speed down themain straight - I got a slipstream offboth Jorge and Dovi - so I decidedto just go wide rather than risk los-ing the front and going into every-one,” said Stoner, who had spent theopening laps battling for the lead.

Stoner: Impossibleto pass Pedrosa

“The bike didn’t feel too good. Wechanged the set-up after warm-up andit was difficult to ride at the start, butbetter at the end. I got past de Punietand then as I came up behind Dani Ithought I could run better lap timesthan him. I thought I’d try to pass him,but that was just an impossible battle.“Dani rode really well today, hedidn’t make any mistakes. He wascoming out of the corners good, clean. Didn’t give me an opportunityto get past. I was on his rear wheelfor most of the race, but just wasn’table to get the job done. So hats offto Dani. “But we’ve got to be happywith another podium today.”

Having put his nightmare start tothe season behind him, Stoner has nowmoved up to sixth in the champion-ship, just two points behind fourthplaced team-mate Nicky Hayden.

“I am happy to see that Casey isback to being… well, Casey!” saidteam manager Vittoriano Guareschi.“Even after running off track he re-

covered with a lot of determination andtried his best to the end but he coulddo no more than he did.” Haydenmeanwhile had a ‘tough’ ride to eighth.

“What a tough race!” said Nicky.“We thought we had found somethingin the warm-up this morning using aworn tyre but in the race with the ex-tra grip from a new tyre the balancejust wasn’t the same.

“I was really struggling over thefirst few laps and held myself up onmy elbow a couple of times. The situ-ation improved in the second half ofthe race, I was able to push a littleharder to the point where I thought Icould make up some positions.

“I lost too much time behindMelandri though and we finishedeighth. It’s not a great result but atleast we have brought some pointshome and we’re now fourth in thechampionship. If we want to staythere we have to do much better andget back to the level we were at acouple of races ago.”
