NEW YORK — Sigourney Weaver and David Hyde Pierce are teaming up to play siblings this fall as both make a return to the stage in a Chekhov-inspired play. Weaver, a three-time Academy Award nominee, and Tony Award-winning Pierce

will star in Christopher Durang’s “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.”

The play, which takes characters and themes from Chekhov and sets them in present day Pennsylvania, will start life at the McCarter Theatre in New Jersey before jumping to Lincoln Center Theater in October. In the play, Vanya

(Pierce) and his stepsister have stayed home to take care of their ailing parents while their movie star sister Masha (Weaver) has been touring the world. Sparks fly at a family reunion.

Weaver, who met Durang when both at-tended Yale University’s School of Drama, has been in a Durang play before — starring on Broadway in his “Sex and Longing” in 1996. Weaver and Pierce have both been in the playwright’s “Beyond Therapy,” but she was in an off-Broadway 1981 version and he took it to Broadway in 1982.

“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” will run from Sept. 7 through Oct. 7 at the McCarter Theatre. Previews at Lincoln Center begin Oct. 25 with an opening set for Nov. 12 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. It will be directed by Nicholas Martin. The rest of the cast will be made up of Genevieve Angelson, Shalita Grant, Billy Magnussen and Kristine Nielsen.

Weaver, whose Broadway credits in-clude “Hurlyburly” in 1984, is working on the USA series “Political Animals.” Her notable film credits include “Alien,” ‘’Ava-tar,” ‘’Working Girl” and “Ghostbusters.”

Four-time Emmy Award-winner Pierce has spent a lot of time on stage since the end of his sitcom “Frasier,” including Broadway stints in “Spamalot,” ‘’Cur-tains,” ‘’Accent on Youth” and “La Bete.”

BERLIN — UEFA has come under fire in Germany for allowing prerecorded scenes to be cut into live coverage of games from the European Championships. Images of a Ger-man fan crying after Mario Balotelli’s second goal in Thursday’s 2-1 defeat to Italy were in fact taken before the semifinal, when she was overcome with emotion during the anthems.

The issue came to light when the woman received e-mails from friends at home won-dering why she was so upset with almost an hour still to play.

“We are surprised and irritated,” Joerg Schoenenborn, the Euro 2012 chief editor of German broadcaster ARD, told Satur-day’s Sueddeutschen Zeitung newspaper. “These pictures aren’t acceptable for us, especially since we spoke to UEFA about this problem a few days ago. We’re now looking for further talks.”

UEFA told The Associated Press that it was striving to show “the human story of the game” in its television coverage, and had “no aim whatsoever to exercise any form of control over the images delivered to broadcasters.”

Directorate General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Trade, Deddy Saleh, said the value of import of such products in 2006 totaled USD 600 million, while in 2011 it increased to USD 1.7 billion. Most of those horticultural prod-ucts were imported from China.

“Hopefully, this product can be supplied by domestic farmers, but their products should be able to compete against the imported products through improvement of

horticulture product from various countries should be addressed with the fulfillment of domestic horticultural product with assured quality. “As a matter of fact, most domestic consumers really want-ed the products, but sometimes the products could not compete in the market,” he said.

However, the restriction policy, said Deddy Saleh, had made

the value of imports tend to be restrained so far. Moreover, there had been other regulations, such as the products could only come in through four special harbors, except for the products from coun-tries that had established coopera-tion to guarantee the condition.

“Horticultural products whose countries of origin have estab-lished cooperation are the United States, Australia and Canada. Products from these three coun-

tries can be received through the Tanjung Priok Harbor,” he said.

He urged the importers to bring in fruits or vegetables from over-seas and distribute them in Indone-sia, especially Bali, with assured quality and security. “Please do not import horticultural products containing hazardous substances for the consumption of foreign tourists who make a visit to the Island of the Gods,” he affirmed.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

A combination of factors, in-cluding Earth slowing down a bit from the tidal pull of the moon, and an atomic clock that’s a hair too fast, means that periodically timekeepers have to synchronize the official atomic clocks, said Daniel Gambis, head of the Earth Orientation Service in Paris that coordinates leap seconds.

The time it takes the Earth to rotate on its axis — the definition of a day — is now about two mil-liseconds longer than it was 100 years ago, said Geoff Chester, spokesman at the U.S. Naval Ob-servatory, keeper of the official U.S. atomic clocks. That’s each day, so it adds up to nearly three-quarters of a second a year.

Timekeepers add that leap second every now and then to keep the sun at its highest at noon, at least during standard time. This is the first leap second since January 2009 and the 25th overall. Gambis said the next one probably won’t be needed until 2015 or 2016.

There should be no noticeable affect or inconvenience on com-puters or any other technology that requires precise timekeeping because they adjust for these leap seconds, Gambis said Friday.

BEIJING — China’s first female astronaut and two other crew members emerged smiling from a capsule that returned safely to Earth on Friday from a 13-day mission to an orbiting module that is a prototype for a future space station.

The Shenzhou 9 parachuted to a landing on the grasslands of the country’s sprawling Inner Mongolia region at about 10 a.m. (0200 GMT). China declared the first manned mission to the Tiangong 1 module — the space program’s longest and most challenging yet — a major stride ahead for the country’s ambitious space program.

About an hour later, mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, emerged from the capsule, followed by crew mates Liu Wang, 43, and 33-year-old Liu Yang, China’s first female astronaut. The three, all experienced air force pilots, were lifted on to folding chairs and appeared in good health. They smiled, waved, chatted and saluted as state television ran live footage from the landing site.

“Tiangong 1, our home in space, was comfortable and pleasant. We’re very proud of our nation,” Liu Yang told national broad-caster CCTV. Space program commander, Gen. Chang Wanchuan, declared the astronauts in good health and declared the mission “completely successful.” He was followed by Premier Wen Jiabao, who said the mission marked “absolutely important progress” for the space program.

The mission had included both remote control and piloted dockings with the module and extensive medical monitoring of the astronauts as part of preparations for manning a permanent space station.

China’s next goals include another manned mission to the module originally scheduled for later this year but which may be delayed depending on an evaluation of the Shenzhou 9 mission and the condition of the Tiangong 1. China has been extremely cautious and methodical in its manned missions, with more than three years passing since the previous one, and all four have been relatively problem-free.

The iconic video game company turns 40 years old this week, much slimmer these days as it tries to stay relevant in the age of “Angry Birds” and “Words With Friends.”

But Atari’s influence on today’s video games is pervasive. Although it wasn’t the first company to make video games, Atari was the first to make a last-ing impression on an entire generation. At arcades — or at video game bars such as Barcade in the trendy Williamsburg section of Brooklyn — nostal-

gic patrons still gather around such Atari classics as “Asteroids,” ‘’Joust” and “Centipede.”

The Atari 2600, launched in 1977, was the first video game console in millions of homes, long before the Nintendo Entertainment System (1985), Sony’s PlayStation (1994) and Microsoft’s Xbox (2001).

Today’s younger iPhone gamers might not re-member how “Pong,” that simple, two-dimensional riff on Ping-Pong, swept across living rooms and arcades in the 1970s. But they might recognize ele-ments of it in easy-to-learn, hard-to-master games based on simple physics — among them, “Angry Birds.”

Director General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Trade, Deddy Saleh, on the sidelines of the im-port policy socialization in Sanur, Friday (Jun 29) said that aside from encountering hazardous imported products, his party also found about 19 species of plant-disturbing organism carried by imported prod-ucts coming into the country.

“Findings of hazardous imported products that do not comply with standards and harmful organisms were based on the results of our monitoring against goods in circula-tion in all major cities in Indonesia such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Batam and Makassar,” he said.

He said the plant-disturbing organisms were carried by the hor-ticultural products from overseas such as potatoes, corn, grass, sweet corn, rice, vegetables, cabbage, ferns, corn seed, wheat and raspber-ry. Those products were imported from several countries, namely the Netherlands, the United States, the Philippines, China, Japan, France, Thailand, Australia, Scotland, and South Korea.

“The products containing harm-

ful organisms were retained by the Quarantine Service and then destroyed or returned,” he said.

According to him, a lot of harm-ful organisms were believed to remain undetected and in circula-tion in the market. On that account, his party would more tighten the imported products by applying more requirements such as permis-sion issued, inspection, label and packaging.

“Until now, the unfair importers bringing in hazardous products in-advertently have not been imposed with sanctions because there are no rules,” he said.

Before the implementation of the Regulation of the Minister of Trade No. 30/2012, the Ministry of Trade did not regulate the imports of hor-ticultural products. The imports of vegetables, fruits, tubers and plants were regulated by the Ministry of Agriculture with a mechanism to meet the provisions of the quaran-tine service. With the implementa-tion of Minister of Trade’s Regula-tion, Indonesia would restrict the port of entry for the imports of fruits and vegetables. (kmb27)

eign companies to jointly develop nine blocks in the western part of the South China Sea.

Vietnam has called this move illegal because the blocks encroach on what it claims are its territorial waters. “The area that the China National Offshore Oil Corporation announced to open for international bidding lies entirely within Viet-nam’s 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,” Vietnamese Foreign Min-istry spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi said on June 26. “It is absolutely not a disputed area,” he said.

MEXICO CITY - Mexicans vote for a new president on Sunday with the opposition party that dominated the country for most of the past century poised for a comeback after the ruling conservatives failed to provide strong growth or halt a brutal drugs war.

Twelve years after the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) lost power, polls show its candidate Enrique Pena Nieto heading into the vote with a double-digit lead over his opponents, despite lingering doubts about the

party. Tainted by corruption, electoral fraud and occasional bouts of brutal authoritarianism during its 71 years in power, the PRI was voted out in 2000. But it has bounced back, helped by the economic malaise and a tide of lawlessness that have plagued Mexico under the conservative National Ac-tion Party, or PAN.

Polls will open at 8 a.m. (9 a.m. EDT), and the first national exit polls are expected when voting ends in the westernmost part of the country 12 hours later. After ending the PRI’s rule in 2000, the PAN raised hopes of a new dawn for democracy in

Mexico. But years of weak growth and the death of more than 55,000 people in drug-related killings since 2007 have eroded its popularity.

Pena Nieto, a youthful-looking former governor of the State of Mexico, stepped into the breach, establishing himself as the new face of the PRI with the aid of favorable media coverage led by Mexico’s most powerful broadcaster Televisa. He insists the PRI is now a modern democratic party. While some Mex-icans are not convinced, Pena Nieto has convinced many that his party has learned from its mistakes.

Trafficking of drug in Bali turns increasingly ubiquitous. More se-riously, young generation of Bali has become an easy target for the abuse of such illicit goods. Chief Executive of National Narcotics Agency (BNN) of Bali, IGK Bu-diartha, Saturday (Jun 30) said in Denpasar that from 2010 to May 2012 was recorded that 2112 young generation of Bali ranging from el-ementary school to college students got involved in drug cases both as users and dealers.

Furthermore, Budiartha said the drug trafficking in Bali was increas-ingly prevalent. It was inseparable from the position of Bali as the world tourist destination. Even, Bali was said to be the target of interna-tional drug distribution syndicate and drug trafficking transit point. More severely, the users and per-petrators of drug abuse in Bali had penetrated the young generation mainly the students of elementary school to universities.

Budiartha explained the case data in the Bali Police Drug Inves-tigation from 2010 to 2012 showed an increasing trend of abuse and drug trafficking among the students ranging from elementary to college students. In 2011, the drug abuse from elementary to university level amounted to 826 cases involving the students of elementary school (92), junior high school (113), senior high school (588) and college (33). Mean-while, up to the end of May 2012 it was found 345 cases involving the students of elementary school (30), secondary school (48), senior high school (263) and college (22). Overall, the total of students in Bali tripped in drug cases from 2010 to 2012 reached 2112 people. In terms of their education, the drug users among the high school students in-creased every year and occupied the highest rank with 588 cases (2010), 690 cases (2011) and 263 cases (until the end of May 2012).

generation was an easy target of the drug abuse. Budiartha admitted if the condition was allowed and no real effort to prevent so that the future sustainability of Bali young genera-tion would be at risk. Meanwhile, to prevent the drug abuse among pupils and students, his party implemented various strategies such as advocacy, outreach and dissemination. BNN Bali also established the cadres that could provide insight for friends, fam-ily, society and the environment.

In addition, his party also per-formed a sudden urine test to stu-dents and new students. However, due to restrictedness of fund and equipment, the urine tests could only be carried out to a few pupils and students by using random sampling method. With such condition, there was possibility for user students who were undetected. According to him, ideally the regular urine tests should be performed annually to all pupils and college students.

However, BNN Bali was not capable of realizing it alone because it required a large amount of fund. For that purpose, his party hoped the university, regency and provincial government through their respective regency education agency to partici-pate in realizing the urine test to detect the abuse of drugs among the students. “Creating a drug-free educational environment should be a shared com-mitment of regional government both provincial and regency government and related stakeholders,” he said.

Budiartha affirmed it was es-sential to save the youth from drug hazards. To that end, there should be a comprehensive effort to prevent the proliferation of drug trafficking in Bali. Similarly, there should be efforts to eradicate the drug trafficking at its roots. Most importantly, the entrance to Bali such as Padangbai and Gilimanuk had to be strictly guarded with more sophisticated device. “We expect the installation of sophisticated security devices at the entrance to Bali can be realized soon,” he said. An underground cave unin-tended to be found was then seen by owner of the land, Mustar, in Segara Katon, Amlapura. The resident who lives nearby, Marisah (45) stated last Friday (29/6) that the water inside the cave seemed to be a healer also as a holy water for prosperous selling. Nyama Selam (the name for Muslim residents at Segara Katon) and Balinese people all came by there. A praying shrine was placed on a nearby tree yet since this spot got hit by people passing by, the shrine was moved to a tree much nearer to the cave.

Marisah said the cave was found by Mustar who’s a healer using traditional medicine (balian) around Friday (22/6) while placing a wood on his land. He said the hole he created was really deep so he dig it then found this cave entrance with the size of a human height. Inside the cave there was a clear water run-ning and the cave branched with the

Yet when the water was given to someone else it didn’t work the same and the giver was given weird noises stating he or she is wrong to do that, to give the water on the wrong place. For that those who want to be healed and to have a prosperous sell should come by themselves. A lot of locals have felt the same such as those who got an ongoing back pain got healed. Sarmiah thinks there’s a feeling that this cave and its water should not be damaged or misued while Marisah’s second child, Ramdan, admitted to have seen a woman in white inside the cave but he couldn’t see her face as he saw her from the back. However this all depends on those who believe it or not, when about to get the water, do pray to the water based on your belief so there won’t be any mis-understanding between the human and the nature. “I was too afraid asking it,” Ramdan stated. TEHRAN - A European Union embargo on Iranian oil went into effect on Sunday, provok-ing anger in Tehran which says the measure will hurt talks with world powers over its sensitive nuclear activities.

Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi sought to downplay the embargo as just the latest punish-ment in decades of ineffective sanctions.

Iranian leaders have insisted they will forge ahead with their atomic programme, regardless of the Western restrictions and others imposed by the UN Security Council.

Oil market observer bodies and analysts say the embargo, coupled with US financial sanctions ramped up on Thursday, are gutting Iran’s vital oil exports, which account for half of government revenues.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) says Iran crude exports in May appear to have slipped to 1.5 million barrels per day (mbpd) as the market braced for the embargo, well below the 2.1-2.2 mbpd Iran insists it continues to sell abroad.

“The sanctions have had no effect on Iran and will have none,” Qasemi was quoted as saying on Sunday by the ISNA news agency.

“I do not see a problem in our enemies starting the sanctions as of today (Sunday), since these sanctions have existed for many years and nothing has happened and one should not anticipate anything new,” he was also quoted as saying on the website of state broadcaster IRIB.

Qasemi and other officials admitted the “illogical” embargo had reduced exports to EU nations, but they said other nations had stepped forward to buy the oil.

“While we collectively exported 18 percent of our oil to them before, it is not difficult to substitute customers for this much oil in the world,” Qasemi said.

It was not possible to verify that claim because Iran has turned off the mandatory location transponders on most of its fleet of 39 oil tankers.

The IEA and experts say most of the tankers remain anchored off Iran and are being used to store up to 42 million barrels of oil unable to be exported. Before the embargo, Europe bought some 600,000 bpd from Iran, which sent two-thirds of its exports to China, India, Japan and South Korea.

The United States has granted exemptions to those Asian countries from its new sanc-tion imposed on Thursday that targets foreign companies doing business with Iran.

That move averted a potential diplomatic row with China, Iran’s biggest oil customer, which greatly increased Iran crude purchases last month after a sharp dip earlier this year because of a commercial dispute with Iran. Beijing refuses to go along with the Western sanctions.

Markets roared their approval after leaders of the 27 European Union countries agreed on an aggressive plan to fix the financial crisis.

The decisions made at the EU summit in Brussels won’t end the crisis that has gripped Europe for nearly three years. Plenty of ques-tions remain about how the bank bailouts would work, whether there’s enough money committed to rescue banks and govern-ments and whether impoverished, indebted Greece will be forced out of the 17-nation euro club.

But for EU leaders who have consistently underwhelmed their exasperated publics and nervous financial markets, Friday’s efforts marked a breakthrough.

The prime minister of Ireland — one of the five eurozone countries that have required

emergency funds — said the plans marked a “seismic shift in European policy.” British Prime Minister David Cameron said that “for the first time in some time we have actually seen steps ... to get ahead of the game.”

There was an immediate sign that Europe’s latest plan was easing fear in financial mar-kets: The cost for the troubled government of Spain to borrow fell dramatically. The interest rate, or yield, on the country’s 10-year bonds fell by more than half a percentage point, to 6.34 percent.

Previously, European leaders insisted that the two bailout funds be used only to rescue governments — like Ireland, Portugal and Greece. If money was going to be used for troubled banks, it had to first go to a govern-ment. But that added to the debt on a govern-

ment’s books because it was responsible for repaying the money.

The bids to rescue banks ended up raising fears about the ailing governments; Spain’s borrowing costs rose dramatically two weeks ago after the eurozone countries agreed to lend it $125 billion to rescue its banks.

The EU also called for a single regulator — probably the European Central Bank — to oversee Europe’s banks. Currently, banks are regulated by their national governments and some countries have been slow to recognize loan problems and shut down their worst banks.

As part of a broad “banking union,” the new regulator will likely get power to close failing banks if their national regulators won’t do it. The plan is also expected to include deposit insurance across Europe. Individual European countries now insure bank deposits within their borders. But bank failures could overwhelm those national funds.

The bank overhaul is supposed to be com-pleted by the end of the year.

Wayan Dauh said Drama Gong was one of Balinese traditional arts which became famous on the early days of the festival and made people stay up at night on the opening of the festival.

Drama Gong is a collaboration of almost all types of arts, including music, which cre-ates jokes to make people laugh, but still in frame of art ethics.

The drama became popular in the 1970s to 1980s, making the Balinese people addicted to watch the show. But since the 2000s, the art performance was rarely performed.

Besides Drama Gong, Wayan added, the opening of the festival would present four other art performances, started by dance per-formance from Sanggar Siwer Nadi Swara Denpasar at 11.00 am local time, followed by an art development show from Banjar Geladag at 04.00 pm.

Dance performance Calonarang by Gita Mahardika, would be performed in the eve-ning after the Drama Gong.

Drama Gong is an art performance which combines elements of modern drama (non traditional Balinese) and traditional Balinese arts. In so many ways Drama Gong is a mix-ture of modern theater (West) and a traditional theater (Bali).

The horticultural imports con-sisting of fruits and vegetables mostly came from China, Direc-tor General of Foreign Trade at the Trade Ministry Deddy Saleh said here on Saturday.

To reduce dependence on imported horticultural products, he said the country must be able to develop horticultural products of high quality.

“We hope domestic farmers would be able to meet the de-mand for horticultural products. However, they must be able to compete with foreign rivals by improving quality,” he said.

He said that low quality re-mained an obstacle to the devel-opment of horticultural products in the country.

He added however that the value of horticultural imports had been declining since the past few months thanks to the government’s policy to restrict horticultural imports.

Horticultural products could be imported via the coun-try’s four special ports, except if the imported goods came from countries that had signed agreements with Indonesia, he said.

All 50 of Japan’s working reac-tors were gradually turned off in the wake of last year’s massive earthquake and tsunami, which sent the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant into multiple meltdowns, setting off the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

But worries about a power crunch over the hot summer months have been growing. Oil imports are soaring. Officials have

GENEVA - World powers struck an agreement that a transitional government should be set up in Syria to end the conflict there but they remained at odds over what part President Bashar al-Assad might play in the process. Peace envoy Kofi Annan said after the talks in Geneva on Saturday the government should include members of Assad’s ad-ministration and the Syrian opposition and that it should arrange free elections.

“Time is running out. The conflict must be resolved through peaceful dialogue and negotiations,” Annan told reporters. The talks had been billed as a last-ditch effort to halt the worsening violence in Syria but hit obstacles as Russia, Assad’s most powerful ally, opposed Western and Arab insistence that he must quit the scene.

The final communique said the transitional government should be formed “on the basis of mutual consent”. In a victory for Russia, it omitted text in a previous draft which explicitly said the plan would exclude from government anyone whose participation would undermine the transition’s credibility and jeopardize stability and reconciliation.

After the meeting, the United States and Russia contradicted each other over what that meant for Assad, who has ruled Syria for 11 years since succeeding his father Hafez and has been condemned internation-ally for the ferocity of his crackdown on the uprising against him.

“The inscriptions were found by local residents when they were digging the ground at two different places. I was surprised because these are the first inscriptions found in Sulawesi,” Mandar Majene Museum Curator Ahmad Hasan said.

Two of the inscriptions are 50 centimetres long and 15 centimetres wide, while the other one is 50 centi-metres in length and 40 centimetres in width.

One inscription was found in Banggae village, nearby a menhir (a tall upright stone) that is wor-shipped as Batu Miana, while the other two were found in Kota Tinggi.

The secretary of the Majene Youth, Sport, Culture and Tourism Service, Mitthar Thala Ali, said the department would conduct further studies on the discovery of objects that have historical value and, if necessary, work with the archaeological department.

“The 2012 debt consists of foreign debts worth Rp639.88 trillion, domestic debts worth Rp1.15 trillion, and state debt securities worth Rp1,304.26 tril-lion,” the ministry`s director of debt strategy and portfolio, Scenaider CH Siahaan said.

However, he added, the government`s debts were well managed, with the debt-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio reaching 24 percent, which was one of the lowest among developed and devel-oping nations.

“The ratio indicates that Indonesia

still has the capability to meet its obliga-tions to creditors,” Scenaider stated.

Director General of Debt Manage-ment at the Finance Ministry Rahmat Waluyanto said the government`s for-eign debts had continued to reduce over the past six years, while the total amount of state bonds issued during the same period had been increasing.

“The rupiah-denominated debt se-curities issued until May 2012 reached Rp1,057.52 trillion, compared with Rp992.03 trillion a year earlier,” he pointed out.

Rahmat said the value of state debt securities continued to increase, which offset budget deficit and helped in repay-ment of foreign debts.

“The value of state debt securities has increased because our state budget still records a deficit and we repay foreign debts using proceeds from the issuance of state debt securities,” he explained.

“If the state budget did not record a deficit, the government would not increase the amount of loans and would continue to issue state bonds,” Rahmat said.

The security personnel found manufactured clove cigarettes (SKM) packed in several sizes of the for-bidden goods, including 22 bales of cigarettes and 29 packs of LG cigarettes, 28 pressing machines and 115 Puas cigarets, as well as 42 kilograms of Puas cigarettes and 76 kg of LG cigarettes.

The other goods found by the police included 13 cartons of cigarettes or 179,200 pieces of Super cigarettes and a hearing element.

“The perpetrator with the initial MT was still after the police,” he said.

Like a similar raid on June 20, 2012 seizing 128,400 illegal cigarettes at a house of Henny in Kriyan village, Kalinyamatan subdistrict, Jepara regency, she said the operation was practically the same this time by renting a house for the production of illegal cigarettes.

The potential loss of the state of these illegal ac-tivities which have been saved amounted to Rp79.23 million.

KIEV - The 2020 European Championship could be spread across 12 or 13 cities around Eu-rope, rather than being staged in just one or two countries, UEFA president Michel Platini said on Saturday. “The Euros in 2020 could be held all over Europe,” Platini told a news conference.

“You could have one country with 12 host cities, or we could have it in 12 or 13 cities all over Europe. It is just an idea, but in these days of cheap air travel anything is pos-sible. “The majority of the execu-tive committee thinks it’s a good idea and says we should really have a good think about this.

“We are going to have a meeting with all of our national federations coming up to December and in Decemeber or January we’re are going to make a decision.” Turkey had been favourite to host the event in eight years’ time but their bid has been complicated by Istanbul’s campaign to also host the Olympic Games in the same year.

Platini said the idea for a multi-country Euros came to him “a while ago” and had been met with interest from his excecutive. “It’s an idea I feel really passionate about, it will be a lot easier from a financial per-spective for all the countries.

“If you need to build airports or 10 stadiums in a country, this would be rather easy because it would be one stadium per host city. That’s all we can say at the moment. “We have not decided anything yet, but by January we will decide if we are going to have the Euros in one country or all over Europe.”

UEFA originally set a deadline of mid-May for hosts to express an interest, but although they said two or three countries other than Turkey had done so, they did not name them publicly. One reason for UEFA not making them public is because clearly they were not satisfied the

interested countries could stage the event, hence Platini’s idea for a multi-country tournament.

Platini said during the UEFA Congress in Istanbul recently that he would support a Turkey bid, but has now retreated somewhat from that stance, saying on Saturday: “We are not going to wait until we know whether Turkey are going to get the Olympics. “It creates a problem for us. We do have other candidates. “Everyone has the pos-sibility to host it.”

GREAT DEBATEWhen asked how fans would be

expected to attend the matches if they wanted to travel around Eu-rope, he replied that in this day of cheap air travel, movement around Europe was not as prohibitive as it once was. “And it is easier to go from London to Paris or Berlin than Cardiff to Gdansk,” the Frenchman said. “It would be four games per venue. It is a great debate.”

Platini’s plan is not without mer-it. It means that matches could be staged in a number of cities around the continent, in a way, bringing the Euros to the fans, rather than the other way round. The singlular, or co-hosting identity of the tourna-ment might be lost, but fans in some unlikely places could see matches in their home cities.

The next Euros, in France in 2016, will comprise 24 teams, but Platini said it was unlikely the Euros would expand to 32 teams as it may reduce in quality. “And anyway the World Cup is 32 teams, its enough. When we go to 24 teams the quality will not suffer. We have plenty of good teams in Europe who could qualify, and there will be more matches in the stadiums, but 32 is too many,” he said.

The current tournament, the last to comprise 16 teams and staged in Poland and Ukraine, ends with the final between Spain and Italy in Kiev on Sunday.

KIEV - The 2020 European Championship could be spread across 12 or 13 cities around Eu-rope, rather than being staged in just one or two countries, UEFA president Michel Platini said on Saturday. “The Euros in 2020 could be held all over Europe,” Platini told a news conference.

“You could have one country with 12 host cities, or we could have it in 12 or 13 cities all over Europe. It is just an idea, but in these days of cheap air travel anything is pos-sible. “The majority of the execu-tive committee thinks it’s a good idea and says we should really have a good think about this.

“We are going to have a meeting with all of our national federations coming up to December and in Decemeber or January we’re are going to make a decision.” Turkey had been favourite to host the event in eight years’ time but their bid has been complicated by Istanbul’s campaign to also host the Olympic Games in the same year.

Platini said the idea for a multi-country Euros came to him “a while ago” and had been met with interest from his excecutive. “It’s an idea I feel really passionate about, it will be a lot easier from a financial per-spective for all the countries.

“If you need to build airports or 10 stadiums in a country, this would be rather easy because it would be one stadium per host city. That’s all we can say at the moment. “We have not decided anything yet, but by January we will decide if we are going to have the Euros in one country or all over Europe.”

UEFA originally set a deadline of mid-May for hosts to express an interest, but although they said two or three countries other than Turkey had done so, they did not name them publicly. One reason for UEFA not making them public is because clearly they were not satisfied the

interested countries could stage the event, hence Platini’s idea for a multi-country tournament.

Platini said during the UEFA Congress in Istanbul recently that he would support a Turkey bid, but has now retreated somewhat from that stance, saying on Saturday: “We are not going to wait until we know whether Turkey are going to get the Olympics. “It creates a problem for us. We do have other candidates. “Everyone has the pos-sibility to host it.”

expected to attend the matches if they wanted to travel around Eu-rope, he replied that in this day of cheap air travel, movement around Europe was not as prohibitive as it once was. “And it is easier to go from London to Paris or Berlin than Cardiff to Gdansk,” the Frenchman said. “It would be four games per venue. It is a great debate.”

Platini’s plan is not without mer-it. It means that matches could be staged in a number of cities around the continent, in a way, bringing the Euros to the fans, rather than the other way round. The singlular, or co-hosting identity of the tourna-ment might be lost, but fans in some unlikely places could see matches in their home cities.

The next Euros, in France in 2016, will comprise 24 teams, but Platini said it was unlikely the Euros would expand to 32 teams as it may reduce in quality. “And anyway the World Cup is 32 teams, its enough. When we go to 24 teams the quality will not suffer. We have plenty of good teams in Europe who could qualify, and there will be more matches in the stadiums, but 32 is too many,” he said.

The current tournament, the last to comprise 16 teams and staged in Poland and Ukraine, ends with the final between Spain and Italy in Kiev on Sunday.

GENEVA - World powers struck an agreement that a transitional government should be set up in Syria to end the conflict there but they remained at odds over what part President Bashar al-Assad might play in the process. Peace envoy Kofi Annan said after the talks in Geneva on Saturday the government should include members of Assad’s ad-ministration and the Syrian opposition and that it should arrange free elections.

“Time is running out. The conflict must be resolved through peaceful dialogue and negotiations,” Annan told reporters. The talks had been billed as a last-ditch effort to halt the worsening violence in Syria but hit obstacles as Russia, Assad’s most powerful ally, opposed Western and Arab insistence that he must quit the scene.

The final communique said the transitional government should be formed “on the basis of mutual consent”. In a victory for Russia, it omitted text in a previous draft which explicitly said the plan would exclude from government anyone whose participation would undermine the transition’s credibility and jeopardize stability and reconciliation.

After the meeting, the United States and Russia contradicted each other over what that meant for Assad, who has ruled Syria for 11 years since succeeding his father Hafez and has been condemned internation-ally for the ferocity of his crackdown on the uprising against him.

West Sulawesi, have found three ancient inscriptions that are likely to be 400 to 500 years old, according to an official.

“The inscriptions were found by local residents when they were digging the ground at two different places. I was surprised because these are the first inscriptions found in Sulawesi,” Mandar Majene Museum Curator Ahmad Hasan said.

Two of the inscriptions are 50 centimetres long and 15 centimetres wide, while the other one is 50 centi-metres in length and 40 centimetres in width.

One inscription was found in Banggae village, nearby a menhir (a tall upright stone) that is wor-shipped as Batu Miana, while the other two were found in Kota Tinggi.

The secretary of the Majene Youth, Sport, Culture and Tourism Service, Mitthar Thala Ali, said the department would conduct further studies on the discovery of objects that have historical value and, if necessary, work with the archaeological department.

“The 2012 debt consists of foreign debts worth Rp639.88 trillion, domestic debts worth Rp1.15 trillion, and state debt securities worth Rp1,304.26 tril-lion,” the ministry`s director of debt strategy and portfolio, Scenaider CH Siahaan said.

However, he added, the government`s debts were well managed, with the debt-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio reaching 24 percent, which was one of the lowest among developed and devel-oping nations.

“The ratio indicates that Indonesia

still has the capability to meet its obliga-tions to creditors,” Scenaider stated.

Director General of Debt Manage-ment at the Finance Ministry Rahmat Waluyanto said the government`s for-eign debts had continued to reduce over the past six years, while the total amount of state bonds issued during the same period had been increasing.

“The rupiah-denominated debt se-curities issued until May 2012 reached Rp1,057.52 trillion, compared with Rp992.03 trillion a year earlier,” he pointed out.

Rahmat said the value of state debt securities continued to increase, which offset budget deficit and helped in repay-ment of foreign debts.

“The value of state debt securities has increased because our state budget still records a deficit and we repay foreign debts using proceeds from the issuance of state debt securities,” he explained.

“If the state budget did not record a deficit, the government would not increase the amount of loans and would continue to issue state bonds,” Rahmat said.

The security personnel found manufactured clove cigarettes (SKM) packed in several sizes of the for-bidden goods, including 22 bales of cigarettes and 29 packs of LG cigarettes, 28 pressing machines and 115 Puas cigarets, as well as 42 kilograms of Puas cigarettes and 76 kg of LG cigarettes.

The other goods found by the police included 13 cartons of cigarettes or 179,200 pieces of Super cigarettes and a hearing element.

“The perpetrator with the initial MT was still after the police,” he said.

Like a similar raid on June 20, 2012 seizing 128,400 illegal cigarettes at a house of Henny in Kriyan village, Kalinyamatan subdistrict, Jepara regency, she said the operation was practically the same this time by renting a house for the production of illegal cigarettes.

The potential loss of the state of these illegal ac-tivities which have been saved amounted to Rp79.23 million.

The perpetrators have violated article 50 of law No 11/2007 on amended Law no 11/1995 on customs and may face a prison term of one to five years and a fine of double or ten times the tobacco tax payable.

A combination of factors, in-cluding Earth slowing down a bit from the tidal pull of the moon, and an atomic clock that’s a hair too fast, means that periodically timekeepers have to synchronize the official atomic clocks, said Daniel Gambis, head of the Earth Orientation Service in Paris that coordinates leap seconds.

The time it takes the Earth to rotate on its axis — the definition of a day — is now about two mil-liseconds longer than it was 100 years ago, said Geoff Chester, spokesman at the U.S. Naval Ob-servatory, keeper of the official U.S. atomic clocks. That’s each day, so it adds up to nearly three-quarters of a second a year.

Timekeepers add that leap second every now and then to keep the sun at its highest at noon, at least during standard time. This is the first leap second since January 2009 and the 25th overall. Gambis said the next one probably won’t be needed until 2015 or 2016.

There should be no noticeable affect or inconvenience on com-puters or any other technology that requires precise timekeeping because they adjust for these leap seconds, Gambis said Friday.

BEIJING — China’s first female astronaut and two other crew members emerged smiling from a capsule that returned safely to Earth on Friday from a 13-day mission to an orbiting module that is a prototype for a future space station.

China declared the first manned mission to the Tiangong 1 module — the space program’s longest and most challenging yet — a major stride ahead for the country’s ambitious space program.

About an hour later, mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, emerged from the capsule, followed by crew mates Liu Wang, 43, and 33-year-old Liu Yang, China’s first female astronaut. The three, all experienced air force pilots, were lifted on to folding chairs and appeared in good health. They smiled, waved, chatted and saluted as state television ran live footage from the landing site.

“Tiangong 1, our home in space, was comfortable and pleasant. We’re very proud of our nation,” Liu Yang told national broad-caster CCTV. Space program commander, Gen. Chang Wanchuan, declared the astronauts in good health and declared the mission “completely successful.” He was followed by Premier Wen Jiabao, who said the mission marked “absolutely important progress” for the space program.

Those products were imported from several countries, namely the Netherlands, the United States, the Philippines, China, Japan, France, Thailand, Australia, Scotland, and South Korea.

“The products containing harm-

ful organisms were retained by the Quarantine Service and then destroyed or returned,” he said.

According to him, a lot of harm-ful organisms were believed to remain undetected and in circula-tion in the market. On that account, his party would more tighten the imported products by applying more requirements such as permis-sion issued, inspection, label and packaging.

“Until now, the unfair importers bringing in hazardous products in-advertently have not been imposed with sanctions because there are no rules,” he said.

Before the implementation of the Regulation of the Minister of Trade No. 30/2012, the Ministry of Trade did not regulate the imports of hor-ticultural products. The imports of vegetables, fruits, tubers and plants were regulated by the Ministry of Agriculture with a mechanism to meet the provisions of the quaran-tine service. With the implementa-tion of Minister of Trade’s Regula-tion, Indonesia would restrict the port of entry for the imports of fruits and vegetables. (kmb27)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — Sigourney Weaver and David Hyde Pierce are teaming up to play siblings this fall as both make a return to the stage in a Chekhov-inspired play. Weaver, a three-time Academy Award nominee, and Tony Award-winning Pierce

will star in Christopher Durang’s “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.”

The play, which takes characters and themes from Chekhov and sets them in present day Pennsylvania, will start life at the McCarter Theatre in New Jersey before jumping to Lincoln Center Theater in October. In the play, Vanya

(Pierce) and his stepsister have stayed home to take care of their ailing parents while their movie star sister Masha (Weaver) has been touring the world. Sparks fly at a family reunion.

Weaver, who met Durang when both at-tended Yale University’s School of Drama, has been in a Durang play before — starring on Broadway in his “Sex and Longing” in 1996. Weaver and Pierce have both been in the playwright’s “Beyond Therapy,” but she was in an off-Broadway 1981 version and he took it to Broadway in 1982.

“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” will run from Sept. 7 through Oct. 7 at the McCarter Theatre. Previews at Lincoln Center begin Oct. 25 with an opening set for Nov. 12 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. It will be directed by Nicholas Martin. The rest of the cast will be made up of Genevieve Angelson, Shalita Grant, Billy Magnussen and Kristine Nielsen.

Weaver, whose Broadway credits in-clude “Hurlyburly” in 1984, is working on the USA series “Political Animals.” Her notable film credits include “Alien,” ‘’Ava-tar,” ‘’Working Girl” and “Ghostbusters.”

Four-time Emmy Award-winner Pierce has spent a lot of time on stage since the end of his sitcom “Frasier,” including Broadway stints in “Spamalot,” ‘’Cur-tains,” ‘’Accent on Youth” and “La Bete.”

BERLIN — UEFA has come under fire in Germany for allowing prerecorded scenes to be cut into live coverage of games from the European Championships. Images of a Ger-man fan crying after Mario Balotelli’s second goal in Thursday’s 2-1 defeat to Italy were in fact taken before the semifinal, when she was overcome with emotion during the anthems.

The issue came to light when the woman received e-mails from friends at home won-dering why she was so upset with almost an hour still to play.

“We are surprised and irritated,” Joerg Schoenenborn, the Euro 2012 chief editor of German broadcaster ARD, told Satur-day’s Sueddeutschen Zeitung newspaper. “These pictures aren’t acceptable for us, especially since we spoke to UEFA about this problem a few days ago. We’re now looking for further talks.”

UEFA told The Associated Press that it was striving to show “the human story of the game” in its television coverage, and had “no aim whatsoever to exercise any form of control over the images delivered to broadcasters.”

Directorate General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Trade, Deddy Saleh, said the value of import of such products in 2006 totaled USD 600 million, while in 2011 it increased to USD 1.7 billion. Most of those horticultural prod-ucts were imported from China.

“Hopefully, this product can be supplied by domestic farmers, but their products should be able to compete against the imported products through improvement of

quality,” said Deddy Saleh.According to him, an imported

horticulture product from various countries should be addressed with the fulfillment of domestic horticultural product with assured quality. “As a matter of fact, most domestic consumers really want-ed the products, but sometimes the products could not compete in the market,” he said.

However, the restriction policy, said Deddy Saleh, had made

the value of imports tend to be restrained so far. Moreover, there had been other regulations, such as the products could only come in through four special harbors, except for the products from coun-tries that had established coopera-tion to guarantee the condition.

“Horticultural products whose countries of origin have estab-lished cooperation are the United States, Australia and Canada. Products from these three coun-

tries can be received through the Tanjung Priok Harbor,” he said.

He urged the importers to bring in fruits or vegetables from over-seas and distribute them in Indone-sia, especially Bali, with assured quality and security. “Please do not import horticultural products containing hazardous substances for the consumption of foreign tourists who make a visit to the Island of the Gods,” he affirmed.
