Mount Raung on Indonesia’s main island of Java, which has been rumbling for weeks, sent an ash cloud floating over Bali on Thursday, forcing the airport to close for two days. Thousands of tourists who were visiting the resort island famed for its palm-fringed beaches found themselves stuck at Ngurah Rai airport, near Bali’s capital Den- pasar, anxiously watching depar- ture boards, sitting and sleeping on the floor. The airport closed again on Sunday as the ash returned but reopened several hours later after authorities gave the all-clear. Officials said the clouds of ash continued to drift away from Bali Monday, giving airport authori- ties a chance to clear the backlog, which they said would take about three days. “We are doing this as quickly as possible as the ash could come back any time,” airport official Yulfiadi, who like many Indo- nesians goes by one name, told AFP. Between Thursday and Sunday, a total of 873 flights were cancelled or delayed, Yulfiadi said. Most airlines resumed flights Sunday evening after the airport reopened, but Australian carriers Virgin Australia and Jetstar de- cided to keep services to and from Bali on hold. Many Australians are stuck in Bali after spending the school break on the island. Virgin Australia also cancelled its flights to and from Bali Mon- day, saying their forecasters had warned that conditions were not suitable, while Jetstar resumed services during daylight hours. Airport manager Trikora Harjo said the airport was operating nor- mally again, adding: “The weather is good so I am not sure why one or two airlines have chosen not to fly.” The disruption also came at a bad time for Indonesians, as millions set off on holiday ahead of the Muslim celebration of Eid this week. The airport is providing buses for Indonesians seeking to leave Bali for the holy festival. Authorities raised the alert sta- tus of Mount Raung late last month to the second highest level, after it began to spew lava and ash high into the air. Indonesian government vulca- nologist Gede Suantika said the wind was not blowing ash towards Bali Monday and he expected con- ditions to remain the same until at least the evening. Besides Bali, two airports on Lombok island, also a popular holiday destination, and two small airports on Java serving domestic routes were closed by the ash cloud Thursday. All were now open ex- cept for one on Java. Air traffic is regularly disrupted by volcanic eruptions in Indonesia, which sits on a belt of seismic ac- tivity running around the basin of the Pacific Ocean and is home to the highest number of active volca- noes in the world, around 130. The main concern for airlines regarding volcanic ash is not that it can affect visibility but rather that it could damage jet engines, according to experts. Ash turns into molten glass when it is sucked into aircraft engines and in extreme cases can cause them to shut down. SAN DIEGO — Jamie Lee Curtis took her first slice out of Comic-Con.

The veteran actress made her in-augural appearance at the pop-culture convention Sunday during a panel for FX’s “American Horror Story” and Fox’s “Scream Queens,” the upcoming horror whodunit starring Curtis as the cutthroat dean of a college where a serial killer is on the loose.

Why hasn’t the star of the “Hallow-een” series ever attended Comic-Con? “I’ve been selling yogurt that makes you (expletive),” joked the spokeswoman for the Activia yogurt brand.

“American Horror Story” and “Scream Queens” mastermind Ryan Murphy told the 6,500 fans gathered inside the San Diego Convention Center that he didn’t want to make “Scream Queens” if Curtis

didn’t agree to play Cathy Munsch, a college administrator who takes aim at a posh and exclusive sorority on campus in the show’s first episode.

“If you’re going to hire Jamie Lee Curtis, you want to see her kicking (expletive) and fighting back,” Murphy said. “We’re actually writing a scene now where she’s fighting three killers.”

Curtis, who portrayed survivor Laurie Strode in several “Halloween” films, said she’s including a nod to the character. “In episode two, there is a wordless homage I threw in just as my tipping of the hat to all the Laurie Strode fans out there,” she said. Murphy noted that the show’s actors don’t know the exact identity of the killer and are filming different takes of cast members acting as if they are behind the murders. (ap)

It was the second-biggest open-ing ever for an animated film and an easy win for the sidekicks who took the spotlight after playing supporting roles in two previous “Despicable Me” movies. The bright, babbling baldies have become key characters in the franchise from Universal’s IlluminationEntertainment.

Directed by Peter Coffin, who co-directed both “Despicable Me” movies and voices the Minions, the movie easily beat “Jurassic World,” another Universal picture that grossed $18.1 million in its fifth weekend after release, according to box office tracker Rentrak.

Disney’s “Inside Out” ranked third with $17.1 million in its fourth weekend.

“Minions” was a hit overseas as well, taking the No. 1 spot in 29 of the 30 other countries in which it debuted over the weekend, including Mexico, Russia, France and Venezu-ela. Internationally, the movie has grossed $280.5 million so far.

“Given that they seek to work

for the most evil people on the planet, they give off this incredible happiness,” said Duncan Clark, Uni-versal’s president of international distribution. “I think the quality they’re proving to have is a com-mon denominator appeal across all cultures.”

Only DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek The Third” opened to a bigger gross in North America in 2007, with $121.6 million, accord-ing to Rentrak. “Minions” beat out Disney’s “Toy Story 3,” which took in $110.3 million on its opening weekend in 2010.

Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak’s senior media analyst, said the Min-ions captured most of the buzz among “Despicable Me” fans from the start.

“It’s always been about these crazy, irreverent, funny characters,” Dergarabedian said.

Other studios have created suc-cessful spinoffs, such as Dream-Works’ “Shrek” side story from 2011, “Puss in Boots.” There are

also the multi-layered spinoffs in Disney’s Marvel universe, includ-ing “Ant-Man,” which opens next weekend.

“It seems like a foregone conclu-sion there will be more ‘Minions’ because of the millions they made,” Dergarabedian said.

Universal is planning to unleash “Despicable Me 3” in the summer of 2017 and plans a gaggle of other films by Illumination Entertainment. Led by founder and CEO Chris Me-ledandri, the animated movie studio has become one of Hollywood’s most successful.

Ahead of “Minions,” Universal showed a trailer from a release for next summer, “The Secret Life of Pets,” which explores what pets do when their owners leave them at home unattended. It’s also planning to release a holiday 2017 version of Dr. Seuss’ “Grinch.” (ap)

SAN DIEGO — Elijah Wood isn’t just a star of “The Last Witch Hunter.” He apparently knows one of witches’ most intimate secrets.

“I’m actually a real fan of witches,” Wood said in an inter-view at Comic-Con, adding that he’d like to see more of them on the big screen.

“There’s another witch movie coming out in around October or November called ‘The Witch.’ It’s also very good,” he said. “So we might see this as a cycle, which I would be fine with because I just feel like no one is exploring witches. They’re terrifying.” The 34-year-old actor also knows a bit

of their lore: He said the origin of witches flying on broomsticks came from a real pastime.

“There was a salve that they used to put on brooms that would make them high. And they would sit on the broomstick, which would then go into their blood-stream, if you know what I mean, and it would make these women high,” he said. “That’s where the myth behind the flying witch comes from: a real application of this sort of hallucinogen. It’s awesome. We don’t get into that in ‘The Last Witch Hunter,’ how-ever.” The film is set for release in October. (ap)

‘Minions’ swarms box office with $115.2M haul LOS ANGELES — Universal’s “Minions” overran the box

office over the weekend as audiences in the U.S. and Canada shelled out an estimated $115.2 million to see the evil-master-serving horde frolic on the big screen.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebra-tion of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beau-tifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beauti-fully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SEMArAPUrA - Crossing activities at Kusamba traditional harbor, Dawan, ahead of Galungan began to rise, Sunday (Jul. 12). The increase was not only seen in the condition of passengers being about to cross, but also the delivery of goods in the form of ritual materi-als to Nusa Penida. During normal operation, the sampan owners only make four times of crossing to Nusa Penida. But ahead of Galungan, the crossing to Nusa Penida can reach more than four trips.

“Now, before midday it has been

four times of trip,” said one of the harbor officers from the Klungkung Transportation Agency, Made Se-dana Yoga, last Sunday.

According to him, the increased crossing activities at Kusamba do not only happen at one harbor, but also at other traditional harbors such as at Kampung Kusamba, Bias hamlet and Tribuana, Kusamba. In addition, to anticipate booming passengers that will be crossing, the harbor gives priority to the delivery of ritual needs to Nusa Penida. All other goods such as quarry materi-

als have been postponed from three days ago.

“Currently we are prioritizing the delivery of materials of ceremo-nial feast, while building materials will be postponed,” he said.

More specifically, Sedana Yoga said that the increasing activity at the Kusamba crossing harbor has occurred since two days ago. This increase does not only happen in the number of passengers that will cross, but also the delivery of goods. He estimated the increasing activities at Kusamba crossing har-

bor will reach its peak on Monday (Jul. 13). Many Nusa Penida resi-dents are estimated to return home on Monday to celebrate the feast.

Sedana Yoga admitted that condition of the sampan in the harbor is deserted of passengers. Residents prefer to use fast boat so that they can quickly arrive in Nusa Penida. So far, more sampans at Kusamba Harbor are widely used to transport goods such as food and materials of ob-lation. “Currently sampans lack of passengers. They are even widely

used for transporting goods,” he said.

Similar condition was revealed by a warehouse guard at Bias Harbor, Kusamba, Nyoman Gana. His party said that the delivery of goods to Nusa Penida has increased since Saturday (Jul. 11). The goods delivered mostly consist of ritual materials such as fruits, leaves, livestock and others. But he said that most de-liveries of goods are done to Nusa Penida, while the destination of Jungutbatu is still quiet. (kmb)

People wishing to cross, both to Lembar (Lombok) and Nusa Penida scrambled to buy tickets at the crowded counter, provoking tension between passengers, ticket counter attendants, security officers and police officers at Padangbai Harbor where the Harbor officials seemed unprepared to deal with the density of passengers. Many passengers admitted that they felt apprehensive about making the crossing with such adverse weather conditions, while others said they were equanimous about it.

Head of Padangbai Harbor Ad-ministration Authority, I Made Budha, confirmed that the weather is still quite normal. Although the wind is blowing hard around the harbor, the situation at sea is said to be quite tranquil. As a result, it is quite safe for crossing.

“The wind is blowing on land but not at sea, so it is safe to cross,” he said. Based on the weather forecast received from the national weather service (BMKG), the wind is blown at about 4-50 kilometers per hour with an estimated wave height of 0.3 to 2.5 meters. Meanwhile the re-ports from the captain of the vessel

that just crossed said that the wind speed at sea was only 15 knots. It is only considered dangerous to cross if winds blow at a minimum of 50 knots with a wave height of more than 3 meters.

Although declared safe, the BMKG still provides early warning alerts when the height of waves out at sea, in the waters around Bali and NTT reache more than two meters.

Budha said that many passengers chose to do the crossing at night because it is considered the safest time to be out at sea and also so that they can arrive at their destination in the morning. Nevertheless, the crossing activity continues to run normally. Supervisor for the ASDP Padangbai, Faisal Arif, said that on Saturday (Jul. 11) a total of eleven boats provided crossing services for a total of 26 trips with each trip car-rying 809 foot passengers and 5,498 passengers in vehicles. Thus, the total number of passengers trans-ported on Saturday was 6,307.

The highest increase in pas-sengers during the past week only reached 500 to 1,000 passengers on average while, last Friday, the

which forced many to travel over-land. Chief of Padangbai Harbor Police, Made Darsana, confirmed that harbor remains safe on day five before Eid. “There have been no significant criminal incidents interfering with peoples journey

In a study of 67 species, re-searchers found that a geographic squeeze occurred on both con-tinents over the past 40 years: While the northern borders of each species’ territory remained about the same on average, the southern borders generally moved northward.

That shift, by more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) in some cases, was most pronounced for species in the southern parts of the study areas. In North America, the study extended from the southern United States to northern Alaska.

The range loss implies that populations have declined and are on the road to disappearing, said study leader Jeremy Kerr, of the University of Ottawa in Canada. Results were released Thursday by the journal Science.

Analysis showed the changes were not due to differences in land use or the use of pesticides.

“The only explanation we’ve got is that it’s too hot for them,” Kerr said.

Bumblebees are furry-looking and wild cousins of honeybees. They play a crucial role in nature by pollinating wild plants and some crops such as tomatoes and blueberries.

Kerr said that because the geo-graphic ranges of species overlap, the new study does not mean that vast areas of the continents have

HONOLULU — Abnormally warm ocean temperatures are creat-ing conditions that threaten to kill coral across the equatorial Pacific, north Pacific and western Atlantic oceans, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Monday.

Coral bleaching occurs when coral is stressed by changes in its environment, causing it to release algae living in its tissue. The coral then turns pale or white and be-comes more susceptible to disease. In severe cases, the coral can die, permanently changing the habitat for fish and shellfish.

“The bleaching that started in June 2014 has been really bad for

corals in the western Pacific,” said Mark Eakin, NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch coordinator, in a news re-lease Monday. “We are worried that bleaching will spread to the western Atlantic and again into Hawaii.”

The warmer oceans are a result of both El Nino weather patterns and overall climate change, Eakin said. However, the frequency of these events indicate overall warming is more of a concern than individual weather patterns.

Eakin said in an interview Mon-day that despite the fact that El Nino weather patterns are currently in place, that pattern began well after this event of coral bleaching began.

“We’re seeing an actual progres-sion that goes along with this sort of big event, but it’s happening with-out a huge El Nino. We’re seeing the more frequent return of these events primarily because the water temperatures without an El Nino are already so warm it takes less ... to tip the scales and cause the corals to bleach,” he said.

Eakin added that global warming is impacting the oceans and “mak-ing the corals more susceptible.”

Ocean temperatures, light and nutrient levels can cause bleaching. But NOAA says only warm tem-peratures can cause the widespread bleaching that scientists have been seeing since last year.

In 2014, Hawaii experienced widespread bleaching for the first time in nearly two decades. If it happens again this year, it would be the first time in history the Hawai-ian Islands saw consecutive years of bleaching, NOAA said.

Coral can recover from mild bleaching, but two consecutive years of bleaching could cause se-vere damage, scientists said.

“Many healthy, resilient coral reefs can withstand bleaching as long as they have time to recover,” Eakin said. “However, when you have repeated bleaching on a reef within a short period of time, it’s very hard for the corals to recover and survive.”

In 2014, Kaneohe Bay on Oahu’s east side suffered the most serious bleaching in the state, which is home to 15 percent of all coral un-der U.S. jurisdiction. Seventy-five percent of the dominant coral spe-cies there lost some color or turned completely white.

Coral reefs are a critical part of the ecosystem, and their health is vital to the ocean environment. Coral cover just one-tenth of the ocean floor, but they are home to 25 percent of known marine species. Some fish eat coral, and others hide from predators in them. Some spe-cies use coral as nursery grounds. Some types of shark will frequent coral reefs. (ap)

In this Wednesday, April 15, 2015, file photo, a bumblebee approaches blooms on an almond tree in Erfurt, central Germany. A new study says climate change is shrinking the geographic range of many bumblebee species in North America and Europe, which could put them at risk of dying out.

NEW YORK — Climate change is shrinking the geo-graphic range of many bum-blebee species in North Amer-ica and Europe, putting them in danger of future extinction, scientists say.

lost bumblebees completely. Rather, it means that many areas host fewer species than they used to. Such loss of diversity can ham-per an environment’s ability to cope with changes like droughts,

he said in an interview. The bee trend was surprising

because other land creatures like butterflies have extended their range north while maintaining their southern boundaries, re-

searchers said.Kerr’s study drew on museum

records of bumblebees captured by naturalists and researchers over de-cades. It focused on about 423,000 cases where the species, location

and year of capture were known. Researchers set a baseline distribu-tion of the species found between 1901 and 1974, and looked for changes at later time periods, most recently 1999 to 2010. (ap)

It is evident from the data of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali that the number of foreign trav-elers visiting Bali in January 2015 reached 301,748 people. They show an increase of 8.05 percent compared to the same month in the previous year, namely 279,257 people. Similarly, in February 2015 the number of tourist visit reached 338,991 people. This figure increased by 22.91 percent compared to the same month last year, namely 275,795 people.

With soaring tourist arrival by 22.91 percent in February 2015, it could only boost the room oc-cupancy rate in star hotels with an average of 60.03 percent. In the meantime, the room occupancy rate of star hotels in Bali during January 2015 only reached an average of 53.45 percent.

Such condition indicates a discrepancy between the number of tourist arrival and the room occupancy rate. This happens because the growth of hotel rooms exceeds the tourist arrival. Secretary General of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Badung Chapter, Gusti Kade Sutawa, also acknowl-edged the declining quality of Bali tourism due to the growth of accommodation that is not in line with the tourist arrival. As a result, the room occupancy rate is low because of the excessive number of rooms.

“Indeed, there is now a 9-percent increase in tourist arrival to Bali, but with the increase in the number of rooms by nearly 20 percent has led to the lack of balance between the supply and demand,” he said.

He said that the large number of hotel rooms also makes Bali tourism cheap because many hotels slam room rates. The solution is that the government must no longer issue permit of hotel construction and di-rect the development of Bali to tourism-supporting infrastructure improvement in order to realize even development. “Do not build too many hotels in Bali because it will trigger cheap tourism,” he said. (kmb27)

MANGUPURA - Galungan, which celebrates on Wednesday (Jul. 15) is a bless-ing for the people at Kapal village, Badung where many people produce a variety of ritual paraphernalia, including sampian used to decorate penjors and other things required for the celebration of the victory of dharma over adharma . “This is a side job for many people in Kapal village. So Galungan brings an added blessings for our residents. In fact, our residents sometimes even have trouble filling all of their orders and have to bring in supplies from outside of the village,” said the headman of Kapal, I Nyoman Sudiarta, on Monday.

Sudiarta added that at this time of year, materials such as palm leaves are sometimes brought in from Gianyar so as to supply the needs of local residents.

“By and large, we produce everything lo-

cally, but when there is a shortage, we order certain items from places like Sukawati, Gianyar, but never from Java,” he said.

There are about 600 families here who produce ritual paraphernalia. Especially when Galungan takes place during the school holidays, children often help to pro-duce some of the knick-knacks that are then sold to traders.

“These families do not produce large quantities but only small batches that are then sold to wholesalers or sold directly to customers on Jalan Raya Kapal,” he explained

Materials used in the production of miscellaneous Galungan knick-knacks are brought in from Karangsem, except for ibung (white leaf) which is supplied by Sulawesi. “We give special allowance for people to sell on the roadside but only for

the seven days leading up to Galungan after which time the area must remain free of vendors,” said Sudiarta.

On Jalan Raya Kapal, sampian are sold for IDR 15,000; gelang-gelang (five stranded coils) cost IDR 35,000 and dried paddy is sold for IDR 35,000 per bundle. “Prices are going up though as materials are harder to come by and because the demand is increas-ing,” said Dewa Sanja, a villager who was selling along Jalan Raya Kapal.

According to Sanja, Galungan is an op-portunity to make some extra money from selling ritual paraphanalia. “I make about IDR 3 million to IDR 4 million per day in the week before Galungan but not nearly as much on normal days,” he added. (kmb27)

Balinese Hindu priests pray as Muslims board a ferry boat at Gilimanuk port, west Bali, Indonesia Monday, July 13, 2015. A mass exodus out of the capital and other major cities in the world’s most populous Muslim country is underway as millions are heading home to celebrate Eid al-Fitr holiday next week. The holiday marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Surge of foreign travelers exceeds room occupancy rate

MANGUPURA - Tourist arrival to Bali has showed an increase in each period but it does not go linearly with the increase in room occupancy rate. The surge in foreign tourist arrival tends to be higher than the room occupancy rate during vacation on the Island of the Gods.

National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said the leak of the docu-ments, allegedly from a Malaysian government investigation into state investment fund 1MDB, could constitute as “economic sabotage” against the country and be part of a conspiracy to topple Najib.

Police “have not eliminated the possibility of a conspiracy to sub-vert Malaysia’s democratic process and topple the prime minister,” Khalid said in a statement.

Najib has not disputed the existence of the accounts or the receipt of the funds. He has only said that he has never used govern-ment funds for personal gains, and called the allegations a political sabotage. Najib has also rejected repeated calls by the opposition and civil society groups to go on leave while the investigation is going on. Many senior members of his United Malays National Organization party have backed him, at least publicly.

Khalid said all members of the taskforce investigating 1MDB, including central bank personnel, will be questioned to identify who leaked the documents and whether the documents are genuine or have

been doctored.The country’s attorney general

confirmed earlier this month that he had received documents from investigators that linked Najib and 1MDB.

The existence of the documents, which allegedly show $700 million was wired from entities linked to 1MDB into Najib’s accounts, were first reported by The Wall Street Journal. The newspaper said five deposits were made into Najib’s accounts and that the two largest transactions, worth $620 million and $61 million occurred in March 2013 ahead of a general election.

The documents sent to the at-torney general pave the way for possible criminal charges, and have embroiled Najib in the biggest crisis of his political career. If charged, Najib would be the first Malaysian prime minister to face a criminal prosecution.

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey’s prime minister has begun a first round of talks on forming a coalition govern-ment by meeting members of Turkey’s secularist party — the main rival to his ruling Islamic-rooted party.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu met with Repub-lican People’s Party leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu on Monday, a month after Turkey’s June 7 election left his party short of a majority.

This coalition-building process in Turkey is fraught with obstacles, including determining the role of Presi-dent Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who remains a dominant force despite laws that require him to be neutral. Smaller parties have made reining him in a priority for any al-liance.

Davutoglu plans to talk to nationalist party leaders on Tuesday and the pro-Kurdish party on Wednesday. A second round of talks is expected next week.(ap)

Malaysian police probe conspiracy to topple premier

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysian police said Monday they are investigating the leak of confidential documents that alleg-edly show millions of dollars were funneled to Prime Minister Najib Razak’s account, an explosive disclosure that has shaken the ruling coalition in power since 1957 to the core.

SINGARAJA - A formal dis-cussion with the people from the hamlet of Tegallantang in Pengu-lon Village, Gerokgak was held on Satuday (July 11) on the topic of the eradication of prostitution in the area. A total of 40 stall own-ers were informed that starting in August, Pengulon village will be cleared of stalls peddling sex workers.

Subdistrict Head of Gerokgak, Putu Ariadi Pribadi, Section Head of Gerokgak Public Security Ketut Loster, Chief of Celukan Bawang

Harbor Police Nengah Sukadnya, Headman of Pengulon I Nyoman Juliana Nyoman and his staff, Headman of Celukan Bawang M. Ashari, legislator of Buleleng Gusti Ketut Nuaba from Golkar Faction, hamlet chief across Pen-gulon village, chief of Pengulon customary village Ketut Sudama, village secretary of Tinga-Tinga Gusti Nyoman Surya, Takmir Chief of the Baiturrahman Al-Munawarah Mosque of Pengulon village Ahmad Ghozali all at-tended the discussion.

One local residents, Gusti Putu Darma, said that local residents have known the about the good and the bad of prostiution on the area and that he considers the government’s effort to advise local people is a step in the right direction. “The government’s suggestion to eradicate the stalls is good advise. Hopefully, rel-evant authorities will also clean up the boarding houses where prostitution also takes place,” said Darma, who owns a stall in Pengulon.

Another resident, Gede Sumer-ta, assessed that the official group discussion about eh eradication of prostitution is very good and that similar activities must also be conducted in other parts of Bule-leng -not just in Pengulon village. “This style of prostitution is of-fered in places outside of village too. I hope the government will also take disciplinary measures there too,” said Sumerta.

After receiving input from stall owners, subdistrict head of Gerokgak, Putu Ariadi Pribadi

noted various complaints from the stall owners. He added that any and all forms of prostitution will be discontinued this August though coordination with the government of Buleleng. “We will be coordinating with deputy regent of Buleleng and request that in August, all prostitution practices be totally eradicated. We ask that people that if wish-ing to open a stall, operate the stall as such without provid-ing prostitutes,” said Ariadi. (kmb34)

In anticipation of such a pos-sibility, South Denpasar Police will be increasing the number of officers on patrol and focus especially on patrolling at dawn. The East Denpasar Police will be putting more emphases on improving the quantity of the patrolling, especially at housing complexes.

“Ahead of the holidays there has been no increase (of criminal

case—Ed), however it may increase soon,” said the Chief of South Den-pasar Police, Nanang Prihasmoko, on Sunday (Jul. 12).

According to Nanang, dawn patrols have been implemented and most personnel are deployed to tar-get housing complexes. “We also do routine patrols but the earl morning is our point of focus because most thefts take place between 1- 4 AM,” he said.

Because the police’s existing personal cannot cover every part of the city, many place stations are coordinating with independent security such as village security task-forces, public protection and the jagabaya of each village. These groups are asked to get involved in safeguarding and securing their respective communities. “They also patrol and communicate with us continuously. We are greatly helped by their presence in the field,” said the former police chief of South Kuta.

Nanang added that locations that are prone to criminality in-

clude villas, boarding houses and housing complexes. Moreover, because the Galungan and Eid celebrations take place succes-sively this year, many people will stay in their villagers for longer periods of time. “We are asking anyone who will be going home to their villages, to double check their homes to make sure that their gas stoves are turned off and that their doors and windows are properly locked and also that they ask their neighbours to keep on eye on their empty homes,” he said.

Similar suggestions have also been made by Chief of East Den-

pasar Police, Gede Redastra who said that his officers are patrolling both crowded places as well as residential areas and added that “we are patrolling day and night because theft can happen at any time,” he said.

Redastra admitted that he and his personnel are working very hard to cover the area of their ju-risdiction which is quite extensive. “We’ve got four patrol vehicles each with its own territory. The most vulnerable areas receive special attention. Hopefully during the holidays everything is okay,” he said. (kmb36)

BEIJING - China’s total trade slumped in the first half of this year, official data showed Monday, fall-ing well short of the government’s targets and dealing a blow to the

global economy from its biggest trader in goods.

Two-way trade for the first six months of the year fell 6.9 percent to $1.88 trillion, the

General Administration of Cus-toms said.

China is the world’s second-largest economy and a key driver of global growth, with an outsized

impact on resource-rich supplier countries such as Australia.

Over the six months, two-way trade with the European Union declined 6.7 percent, Customs said, and with Japan it dropped 10.6 percent.

Monday’s result was well below Beijing’s official target for the year for trade growth of “about 6.0 per-cent”. That figure was a reduction from the 7.5 percent set for 2014 -- when values expanded only 3.4 percent, the third consecutive year the goal had been missed.

“Commodity prices fell sig-nificantly, dragging down growth in import value,” Customs spokes-man Huang Songping told report-ers, adding that “sluggish foreign demand” was the “major factor” affecting trade growth.

“Export costs remained high, undermining export competitive-ness,” he said, adding that by June 30, the yuan had strengthened 0.2 percent against the dollar from the start of the year, 6.9 percent against the euro and 2.2 percent against the yen.

“The downward pressures on the domestic economy increased and the demand for imports was weak,” he said.

For June, imports fell for the eighth consecutive month, Customs said, dropping 6.1 percent year-on-year in dollar terms to $145.48

billion.But exports increased 2.8 percent

to $192.01 billion on-year -- snap-ping a run of three monthly declines in a row -- and the country’s trade surplus leaped 47.5 percent to $46.54 billion.

The monthly percentage changes were slightly smaller in China’s yuan currency.

Louis Kuijs, a Hong Kong-based economist with the Royal Bank of Scotland, said there had been “extreme weakness” in the first five months of the year.

But there were signs domestic demand was strengthening and the monthly June data suggested “the momentum is starting to im-prove”.

“That is definitely encouraging for the rest of the world,” he told AFP.

Chinese stock markets have been in turmoil in recent weeks, but the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index was strongly up in the after-noon, trading 2.79 percent higher and continuing positive momentum from the end of last week.

The latest report comes as Chi-nese authorities manage what they describe as a “new normal” econo-my in which they steer it away from a traditional model of high growth based on big investment projects and towards one where consumer demand takes prominence. (afp)

Bali News Tuesday, July 14, 2015 5InternationalTuesday, July 14, 201512 International

The country’s leftist Prime Min-ister Alexis Tsipras agreed to tough reforms after 17 hours of gruelling negotiations in return for a three-year bailout worth up to 86 billion euros ($96 billion), Greece’s third rescue programme in five years.

EU President Donald Tusk an-nounced the deal for debt-stricken Greece on Twitter, ending a bitter six-month struggle between Tsip-ras’s anti-austerity government in Athens and the rest of the euro-zone.

“EuroSummit has unanimously

reached agreement,” former Polish premier Tusk said. “All ready to go for ESM programme for Greece with serious reforms and financial support.”

Greece applied last week for a third programme from the euro-zone’s bailout fund, the European Stability Mechanism, after its pre-vious bailout expired on June 30, leaving it without international financial assistance for the first time in years.

Greek banks have been closed for nearly two weeks and there were

fears they were about to run dry due to a lack of extra funding by the European Central Bank, meaning Athens would have had to print its own currency and effectively leave the euro.

Athens had infuriated its credi-tors with actions including a sur-prise referendum on July 5 in which Greeks overwhelmingly rejected previous bailout terms offered by its creditors. The full terms of the new deal were not immediately available but they looked set to be even tougher than those originally offered to Greece.

A Greek government official had earlier said the terms drafted on Sunday by the euro finance minis-ters were “very bad”, amid concerns

they would effectively take control of much of Greek finances away from Athens.

Under terms drawn up by eu-rozone finance ministers at the weekend, Athens would now have to push through new even tougher laws by Wednesday, Finnish Fi-nance Minister Alex Stubb said.

Athens would have to introduce harsh conditions on labour reform and pensions, VAT and taxes, and measures on privatisation, he add-ed. Key sticking points included the involvement of the IMF and a call for Greece to park assets of up to 50 billion euros ($56 billion) in a fund in Luxembourg for privatisation.

Arriving for what was billed as a last-chance summit Sunday, Merkel

said there would be “no agreement at any price”, complaining of a loss of trust in Athens.

Tsipras, who was elected in January vowing to end five years of austerity tied to two previous bailouts since 2010, had said a deal was “possible” if all sides were willing.

The 40-year-old has become a standard-bearer for leftist parties across the continent who say the austerity policies championed by Brussels undercut growth and cause massive unemployment.

The Greek parliament approved Greece’s new reform plans on Sat-urday, despite them being similar to those rejected by Greeks in the referendum. (afp)

SINGARAJA - Volcanic ash from the erup-tion of Mount Raung in Bondowoso, East Java, last week, continues to sprinkle down on Buleleng. On Sunday, the ash was blown by gale force winds that some people say are a result of climate change. The strong winds have toppled trees throughout Buleleng and are sweeping ash into peoples homes.

The spread of the fine black volcanic ash has

been confirmed as coming from the eruption of Mount Raung and now forms a thin layer of ash on everything outside including peoples laun-dry, motorcycles and restaurant tables, and is even found on the floors inside peoples homes. Many people fear that the ash will continue to spread and cause health problems.

One resident of Singaraka, named Made Sulastri said that her well water is no longer fit for consumption. “The well cannot be used for the time being because a lot of volcanic ash from Mount Raung has contaminated the water,” she said.

Managing Director of Buleleng Hospital, Gede Wiartana, has appealed to people to re-main vigilant, wear glasses and medical masks when they go outside. “Hopefully, people will remain vigilant as the ash cannot always be seen,” he said. (kmb34)

Based on observation on Sun-day, many fish carcasses were seen in the farmer cages floating on the water surface. Other than in fish cages, similar condition was also seen around the Kedisan Pier. Carcasses of dead wild fish due to sulfur burst are seen floating on the sidelines of abuyat grass.

One of the fish farmers at Ke-disan, Made Darsana, said that the death of thousands of fish in Lake Batur happened due to sulfur bursts having taking place since Friday afternoon. Compared to other area of the lake, Kedisan area is acknowledged to be the worst exposed to sulfur bursts. As

the result of the natural phenom-ena, the fish mortality rate dealt with by each farmer reaches an average of 40 percent.

“Each fish cage usually con-tains 800 fish. The dead fish due to the impact of sulfur bursts reaches an average of about 200 heads,” he explained.

For Kedisan area, a fish farmer averagely has 20 plots of fish cage. With such high mortality rate of the fish, Darsana estimated the losses suffered by each farmer will reach tens of millions of rupi-ahs. “When compared to previous years, the current sulfur bursts is

not too severe,” he said.In the meantime, the losses

due to the impact of sulfur bursts this time are not only experienced by fish farmers, but also by the SMKN 2 Kintamani vocational school. It happens because the only school in Bangli having fish-ery department also breeds fish in cages all this time.

Headmaster of the SMKN 2 Kintamani, Nyoman Muliawan, said that of the 12,000 fish cul-tivated in the fishery production unit, a total of 3,000 fish died as affected by sulfur bursts. The death of thousands of fish started

to be known to the school on Sat-urday afternoon.

“Thousands of our fish died whereas they have aged 4.5 months. And next two weeks they are ready to harvest,” he explained. Due to fish death, the SMKN 2 Kintamani is now forced to bear great losses. Muliawan estimated the total loss to be borne by the school reaches IDR 40 million.

“Last year, our fish is also af-fected by the sulfur bursts, but the losses were not as large as this time. At that time, our fish we still small,” he said. (kmb40)

Among the problem cited for the postponement of the Pilkada, which is to be held on December 9 this year, in-clude the finding of the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) of malfeasance causing potential losses in state fund.

“This is very serious, therefore, we hope that the Commission II (of the Parliament) and the Election Commis-sion (KPU) hold coordination and find the best way-out,” Parliament speaker Setya Novanto said.

The move, however, seems to have run up against a concrete wall.

Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Ku-molo said the Pilkada would be held as scheduled.

“What is important is that KPU and the election supervision Body (Bawas-lu) are ready for the implementation,” Tjahjo Kumolo said.

KPU scheduled to hold the elec-tion simultaneously in all provinces and 269 district areas on 9 December 2015.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has said that the Pilkada would be held

as scheduled and the government is in the position to be always ready and to facilitate the elections for governors, regents and city majors.

Coordinating Minister for Law, Se-curity and Political Affairs Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno, Law and Human Rights Minister Police Chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti, Financed Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro, and KPU chairman Husni Kamil Manik, also against put-ting off the elections.

Jokowi said the Pilkada would cost around Rp7 trillion and the fund is set aside in the regional budgets of respective areas.

“I ask the Coordinating Minister for Law, Security and Political Af-fairs, Home Affairs Minister, Police Chief and the Finance Minister to soon discuss the budget for security,” the president said.

Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno reaffirmed that the elections for regional leaders must not be postponed regardless of a number of hurdles.

“That is the spirit, to go ahead as

scheduled,” he said, acknowledging there had been plan to delay the elec-tions on financial problem and the finding of the BPK.

Earlier, BPK said it had found loss-es in state fund after auditing budget in elections in 2013 and 2014.

The agency said there were 8 cases with losses of Rp333.93 billion includ-ing in the central office of KPU and Rp323.93 billion in regional offices of KPU.

Police chief Badrodin Haiti said the losses reported by BPK in 2014 would be investigated, but the legal process did not necessarily hamper the elections.

He said there are potential conflicts in all regions or districts but the se-riousness of the conflicts are not the same.

PEKANBARU - As many as 1,022 residents are suffering from various diseases due to a recent spike in air pollution in Riau Province caused by forest fires, a health affairs official stated.

“The count is based on the data collected from early July when the smog was thicker,” Head of Riau provincial health affairs of-fice Andra said on Monday.

According to Andra, a total of 757 people were suffering from upper respiratory tract infection (ISPA), 160 residents were experiencing skin irritation, 50 people were suffering from eye irritation, and 26 and 29 residents respectively were suffering from pneumonia and asthma.

The number of patients has increased, as in the last few days; the air quality has continued to deteriorate to an “Unfair” level in the Riau provincial city of Pekanbaru.

“Reports said that several people are suffering from illnesses in the regions where many hotspots occur such as in the districts of Rokan Hilir and Bengkalis and the cities of Dumai and Peka-nbaru,” he pointed out.

Andra further noted that smoke arising from land and forest fires is harmful to living things, especially humans, as it contains minute dust particles that can trigger irritation in the respiratory tract, skin, and eyes.

Hence, he urged the residents to limit their outdoor activities, especially for young children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly, and residents with particular ailments.

“Let us lead a healthy life. Do not burn land for clearing activi-ties, and do not venture out of the house if it is not necessary. The residents should stay amply hydrated, and wear masks if they have to leave the house,” he advised.

Andra also revealed that the provincial health affairs office has provided a total of 50 thousand masks that will be distributed to the people in all districts and cities in Riau province. (ant)

JAKARTA - Judicial Commission member Taufiqurrohman Syahuri has urged the National Police’s detective division to re-schedule the questioning of him and the commission’s Chairman Suparman Marzuki in connection with the defamation of Judge Sarpin Rizaldi.

“We have handed over our letter requesting for the resched-uling of our questioning to be held after the Idul Fitri holiday,” Syahuri informed journalists here on Monday in connection with the defamation case.

The Judicial Commission’s internal team of lawyers had sent the letter on July 10, or on the day when Syahuri and Marzuki were named as suspects for the defamation of Judge Rizaldi.

Chief of the National Police detective division Commissioner General Budi Waseso affirmed that this defamation case should not be linked to “a certain institution.”

The police investigators have scheduled to commence question-ing of Syahuri and Marzuki on Monday.

Judge Rizaldi, who handled the pretrial motion of Commis-sioner General Budi Gunawan against the Corruption Eradication Commission in the South Jakarta District Court in February, had filed a complaint with the police on March 18, 2015.

In his complaint, Rizaldi alleged that the statements made by Syahuri and Marzuki in the media regarding his court decision were defamatory. (ant)

Jokowi set to go ahead with Pilkada as scheduled

JAKARTA - A number of factions at the Parliament and leaders of political parties have called for postponing the plan to hold simultaneous elections for regional leaders (Pilkada) on “a number of problems not yet settled.”.

Diplomats from Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States wore grim expressions as they met and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry sat in silence when asked if the deadline might be extended or if he could rule out an extension.

“There shouldn’t be any exten-sion,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was quoted as saying by the semi-official Fars news agency. “But we can continue the talks as long as necessary.” One of his deputies also sounded a cau-tionary note.

“I cannot promise whether the remaining issues can be resolved tonight or tomorrow night. Some is-sues still remain unresolved and, until they are solved, we cannot say an agreement has been reached,” Iran’s Tasnim news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi as saying in Vienna.

Diplomats close to the talks said there were contingency plans for an announcement ceremony on Monday if the negotiators sealed an agree-ment, which would open the door to ending sanctions that have crippled Iran’s economy, in exchange for at least a decade of curbs on its nuclear programme.

The Western powers in particular

suspect Iran may have sought to use its civil nuclear programme as a cover to develop a nuclear weapons capability. Iran says the programme is solely for peaceful purposes.

The six major powers have given themselves until Monday to reach a deal with Iran. If they fail to get one by midnight, they will need to extend the terms of an interim nuclear deal with Tehran that has already been extended three times in two weeks.

Another option is to walk away, something both the Americans and Iranians have said they are willing to do. They could also suspend the talks for a few weeks or months, though Iran has said it opposes this.

“MAJOR ISSUES”Kerry has cautioned that “major

issues” remain to be resolved, and comments from both senior Repub-lican and Democratic senators on Sunday suggested that any final deal would also face tough scrutiny in the U.S. Congress. “The parts of the deal are there,” said a senior official from one of the six countries. “We still need to put the finishing touches together. All sides have to decide now. It’s time to say ‘Yes’.”

A senior Iranian official said 99 percent of the issues had been re-

solved, adding: “With political will, we can finish the work late tonight and announce it tomorrow.”

Among the biggest sticking points in the past week has been Iran’s insis-tence that a United Nations Security Council arms embargo and ban on its ballistic missile programme dating from 2006 be lifted immediately if an agreement is reached. Russia, which sells weapons to Iran, has publicly supported Tehran on the issue.

Other problematic issues are ac-cess for inspectors to military sites in Iran, explanations from Tehran of past activity that might have been aimed at developing a nuclear weapon, and the overall speed of sanctions relief.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s point-man on the Ira-nian talks, Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz, told Israel’s Army Radio he was expecting an agreement on Monday or Tuesday. He reiterated Israel’s opposition to the deal.

“What is being drafted, even if we managed to slightly improve it over the past year, is a bad agreement, full of loopholes,” he said. “If we call it by its true name, they are selling the world’s future for a questionable diplomatic achievement in the pres-ent.” (rtr)

TOKYO — Japanese pros-ecutors have decided not to press charges against a former Bangkok police chief over a loaded gun found in his checked luggage.

Authorities said Monday they would drop the case and Comronwit Thoopgrajank was to be released.

Comronwit was arrested on June 22 at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport on his way back to Bang-

kok. He served as Bangkok’s police chief from 2012 until 2014, when he retired. Japanese police said the gun was detected by X-ray check.

Comronwit said the gun was a gift from a friend and he had forgot-ten it was in his suitcase.

Kyodo News agency says pros-ecutors could not determine where Comronwit got the gun or prove his possession was deliberate. (ap)

LONDON — Police removed climate change activists at London’s Heathrow Airport on Monday after the demonstrators breached the pe-rimeter fence to stage a protest on the northern runway.

About a dozen protesters from the group Plane Stupid entered the runway at 3:30 a.m. (0230 GMT Monday; 10:30 p.m. EDT Sunday) to challenge plans to expand Europe’s largest airport. All had been removed, the airport said in a statement.

An independent commission

concluded earlier this month that building a third runway at Heathrow would be the best way to give Britain the additional aviation capacity it says is urgently needed. Environmental activists are outraged by the results of the three-year study, saying that a new runway will make air quality worse and exacerbate climate change.

Heathrow is urging people travel-ing to check with the airlines before departure, even though the protest is over. Both runways remained open. (ap)

WARSAW, Poland — Polish po-lice have arrested eight people sus-pected of dealing “designer drugs” after more than 200 people were sickened by them in recent days.

The drugs consist of powerful psychoactive substances sold as powders or ground leaves with warnings that they not be ingested, language that has so far allowed them to be sold in a legal gray zone. Officials warn that their effects can

be several times stronger than that of marijuana.

Since Thursday, more than 200 people have been hospitalized for poisoning by the drugs in and around the western city of Katowice.

Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz said Monday that her government plans to crack down on people producing and distributing the drugs, while health officials appealed to people not to use them. (ap)

“I roared because I felt like that’s the moment,” Djokovic would say later. “Now is the time for me to close this match out.” One forehand winner later, he did. For the second year in a row, Djokovic solved Federer’s superb serve in the final at the All England Club. And for the second year in a row, Federer’s bid for a record eighth championship at the grass-court tour-nament ended with a defeat against Djokovic.

This time, the match was even as can be through two sets, before the No. 1-seeded Djokovic grabbed ahold of it and wouldn’t let go, beating No. 2 Federer 7-6 (1), 6-7 (10), 6-4, 6-3 Sunday thanks to brilliant returning. “It feels, obviously, good when you make a return winner out of Roger’s serve on the grass,” Djokovic said, “but it doesn’t happen too often.”

Over the past three seasons, Federer has reached two Grand Slam finals — both at Wimbledon, both against Djokovic, both losses. “You sort of walk away empty-handed. For me, a finalist trophy is not the same,” a grim-faced Federer said. “Everybody knows that.” At Wimbledon in 2014, Federer won 88 of 89 service games through the semifinals, then was bro-ken four times by Djokovic during the five-set final.

This fortnight, Federer won 89 of 90 service games entering the final,

then again was broken four times. “It takes a little bit of everything: recog-nizing the moment, having the good intuition, following your instincts of where the serve is going to go, being in the right balance,” Djokovic said. “I mean, it’s not that easy, especially with Roger’s precision and accuracy.”

Djokovic’s serve was stout, too: He saved six of seven break points. On a windy afternoon, Federer was simply not the same height-of-his-powers player who defeated Andy Murray in the semifinals. Pressured by Djok-ovic’s body-twisting ability to extend points, Federer committed 35 unforced errors; Djokovic made 16.

Federer and Djokovic have played 40 times; each has won 20. “Novak played not only great today,” said Federer, 33, the oldest Wimbledon finalist since 1974, “but the whole two weeks, plus the whole year, plus last year, plus the year before that.” Federer might very well be the greatest of all time, as some say, but right now, the best in the men’s game is Djok-ovic. He won the Australian Open in January, then was the runner-up at the French Open last month, denying him a career Grand Slam. Go further back, and Djokovic has reached 15 of the past 20 major finals, winning eight.

Still, most spectators were pulling for Federer. So quiet between points that pre-serve ball bounces could be

heard, the crowd voiced a collective “awwwww” of lament after a fault by Federer or a mid-point “ooooh” of excitement when he conjured up something exquisite. “More or less, anywhere I play against Roger, it’s the same,” said Djokovic, who barked at some fans late in the fourth set.

Federer rued letting the opening set get away. Twice, he held a set point and failed to convert. The tiebreaker ended flatly on Federer’s double-fault, part of a run in which Djokovic took 14 of 15 points.

“For me to win this match,” Federer

said, “I probably had to win the first set.” He regrouped, staving off seven set points in the second and taking that tiebreaker. So 110 minutes in, they were tied. Here’s how close it was: In the first set, each man won 37 points; in the second set, each won 51.

At the changeover, Djokovic yelled at himself. Maybe it helped, because his second break gave him a 2-1 edge in the third, and he finished that set off quickly following a 20-minute rain delay. Federer failed to put up much resistance in the fourth, getting broken twice more. Soon enough, Djokovic

was crouching down to pluck a few blades of Centre Court grass and slide them in his mouth.

He equaled his coach, Boris Beck-er, with three trophies at Wimbledon. Add five Australian Opens and one U.S. Open, and his nine major titles push him ahead of folks such as An-dre Agassi, Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl and put the 28-year-old Serb more than halfway to Federer’s record of 17. “He’s clearly making a big name for himself,” Federer said, “having won as many times now as he has in these different Slams.” (ap)

PLUMELEC, France — Race leader Chris Froome heads to the first mountain stages of the Tour de France in confident mood — and with an unexpected main rival. The British rider, seeking his second Tour win after his dominant victory in 2013, safely kept the yellow jer-sey after his Team SKY finished one second behind American rider Tejay van Garderen’s BMC in Sunday’s team time trial, the ninth stage of a crash-marred race.

Van Garderen is 12 seconds behind Froome in second place, put-ting him ahead of Nairo Quintana of Colombia, the 2013 Tour runner-up and the Giro d’Italia winner in 2014,

as well as two-time Tour winner Alberto Contador of Spain and defending Tour champion Vincenzo Nibali of Italy. The 26-year-old van Garderen has never finished higher than fifth at the Tour, but is so far riding like a contender.

“Those guys have that tag of ‘Fab Four’ which is getting a bit irritat-ing,” van Garderen said. “All those guys in the top four have won Grand Tours ... It doesn’t mean I’m intimi-dated by them ... I’m not afraid to beat them.”

The most disappointing of the ‘Fab Four’ has so far been Nibali, who cracked in a short climb at the end of Saturday’s eighth stage and

lost more time in Sunday’s TTT when his Astana team finished fifth, behind Contador’s Tinkoff-Saxo and Quintana’s Movistar.

“I thought (Nibali) was going to be the one guy from the main contenders who would gain time in this first phase of the race,” the 30-year-old Froome said. “I am surprised.”

Contador, who entered the Tour on the back of his second Giro d’Italia win and seventh Grand Tour title, is in fifth place — 1 minute, 3 seconds behind Froome — while Quintana is 1:59 behind in ninth and Nibali sits 2:22 behind in 13th spot. (ap)

Djokovic beats Federer for 3rd Wimbledon title, 9th major

LONDON — A game away from a third Wimbledon champion-ship and ninth Grand Slam title, Novak Djokovic sized up a 108 mph serve from none other than Roger Federer and stretched to smack a cross-court forehand return winner. Two points later, Djokovic again took the measure of a serve from Federer, this one at 123 mph, and delivered a down-the-line backhand for another return winner. After this one, Djokovic bellowed.

A capacity crowd of 62,910 packed University of Phoenix Sta-dium, almost all of the fans decked out in the red, white or green colors of Mexico. They booed heartily when the game came to an end, ex-cept for a tiny contingent of Guate-mala fans, who cheered as if it was a victory.

“We’re very happy and for us it’s a magnificent result,” Guate-mala coach Ivan Sopegno said. “We got a result we can be proud of for ourselves and the people of Guatemala.” Mexico is 1-0-1 in Group C competition, Guatemala 0-1-1. Mexico plays Trinidad and Tobago (2-0) on Wednesday night in Charlotte, North Carolina. Gua-

temala faces Cuba (0-2).“In reality, the team

played well,” Herrera said. “ We controlled the ball and

knew what we were doing left, right and middle of the pitch. We

had a lot of shots, it’s just that nothing happened.

It’s a situation where we couldn’t score but I’m fine with the way we played.” Nearly

all of the game was played in Mexico’s offensive end of the field. Giovani Dos Santos’ shot that bounced off the crossbar ex-emplified the team’s woes.

“It was a difficult game,” Mex-ico forward Oriba Peralta. “We had some bad luck, but we’ll try to get better for the next game.” The fans had shouted “Gio! Gio!” before Herrera finally sent Dos Santos into the game in the 82nd minute. Five minutes later, Dos Santos slammed a shot from in front of the net just outside the penalty area but it ricocheted off the crossbar.

It was one of a handful of near misses for Mexico, which finished with four shots on goal. Guatemala had no shots on goal and really only one opportunity that came

close. It came early, when Mexico turned the ball over at midfield. Guatemala’s Minor Lopez got the ball in front of the net but his kick only grazed it. Still, it bounced just outside of the goal.

The rest of the game, Guatemala settled for playing defense. Mexico couldn’t score even with a man ad-vantage when Jose Contreras drew a red card, for his second yellow, in the 77th minute. Guatemala slowed the game even more in the four minutes of extra time.

When fans thought Carlos Vela had been fouled late in the game for what would have been a pen-alty kick, and none was called, many tossed their hats from the upper deck of University of Phoe-nix Stadium in protest. Mexico had two other near misses. (ap)

MADRID - Real Madrid have decided to give departing goalkeeper and captain Iker Casillas an official send-off later on Monday following criticism over the low-key nature of his tearful farewell news conference on Sunday. Casillas, who is leaving his boyhood club after 16 seasons in the first team to join Porto, appeared alone at the Bernabeu press room and choked up several times as he read out a statement thanking the club for “giving me everything”.

The contrast with his close friend and former Spain team mate Xavi Hernandez was telling and prompted widespread criticism in the Spanish media that Real had not treated their club legend with sufficient respect.

Xavi, 35, left Barcelona for Qatari side Al Sadd at the end of last season and was given a series of rousing send-offs by fans, officials and team mates at the Nou Camp surrounded by family and friends and a glittering array of trophies.

Real president Florentino Perez and Casillas will appear on the VIP tribune at the Bernabeu at 1100 GMT, Real said in a statement on their website (www.realmadrid.com). They did not say whether fans would be allowed into the stadium.

Casillas spoke on Sunday after Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo published an interview with his parents in which they said their son had been forced out of the club by Perez. Casillas had been the victim of an orchestrated campaign of “vilification” in recent years which eventually prompted his decision to quit, they said.

Real did not respond to a request for comment and Casillas did not take questions after making his statement, in which he did not mention Perez by name. Casillas’s decision to leave Real is believed to have been partly motivated by the expected arrival of Manchester United’s David De Gea, the 24-year-old former Atletico Madrid man who is also being groomed to take over as Spain keeper.

Regular playing time for Porto should allow Casillas to ex-tend his international career at least until next year’s European Championship in France. (rtr)

BERN — Swiss federal prosecutors have new evidence of 28 acts of possible money laundering linked to FIFA’s 2018 and 2022 World Cup bid contests.

The office of Switzerland’s attorney general says it now has 81 “suspicious activity reports” filed by banks in the coun- try.

Attorney-General Michael Lauber said last month his team had 53 suspicious incidents to study in a “huge and complex case.”

Swiss prosecutors are working with a separate United States probe of racketeering and bribery implicating senior FIFA officials.

Though Lauber’s case focuses on the 2018-2022 contests won by Russia and Qatar, respec-tively, he said it could include other FIFA business.

His office says Sunday that all new reports “are related to the (attorney general’s) investigation into the allocation of the football World Cups 2018 and 2022.” (ap)

MADRID - Europa League cham-pions Sevilla have sealed a deal to take Italy striker Ciro Immobile on loan from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund for the 2015-16 season pending a medical, the La Liga club said on Sunday.

Immobile, 25, will travel to Seville on Sunday and take his medical on Monday before joining up with his new team mates at their training camp at the La Manga resort in south east Spain, Sevilla said on their website (www.sevillafc.es).

Sevilla were in the market for a goal-scorer after they sold Colombia forward Carlos Bacca to AC Milan and will be

hoping Immobile can rediscover the form that made him top scorer in Serie A playing for Torino in 2013-14. He had a disappointing campaign with Dortmund last term, managing just 10 goals in 32 appearances.

A graduate of the Juventus academy, Immobile had loan spells at Siena, Gros-seto, Pescara and Genoa before joining Torino and then moving to Dortmund for a fee of 18 million euros ($20.1 million) in July last year.

Since winning a second consecutive Europa League title at the end of May, Sevilla have signed Ukraine winger Yevhen Konoplyanka from Dnipro

Dnipropetrovsk and also moved to shore up their defence by bringing in French centre back Adil Rami from Milan.

The Andalusians have outperformed in recent years for a club with relatively modest resources, finishing fifth in La Liga last term behind champions Bar-celona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Valencia.

Their latest triumph in Europe’s second-tier club competition was a re-cord fourth following their victories in 2006 and 2007 when it was called the UEFA Cup. It earned them a place in the Champions League group stage for next season. (rtr)

BUENOS AIRES - Boca Juniors are top of the Argentine league championship as they prepare to unveil Carlos Tevez for his second spell at the club on Monday. A goal from striker Sebastian Palacios after half an

hour gave Boca a 1-0 win at Sarmiento on Sunday, lifting them into first place a point

ahead of San Lorenzo and three in front of River Plate.

Tevez, back home in Buenos Aires after a decade in Europe, missed the resumption of the championship because he is on holiday after playing for Ar-gentina at the Copa America.

He will be officially pre-sented to the media later on Monday and is expected to make his comeback in next weekend’s home match against Quilmes

at La Bombonera.“I’ve got a nice

little mess,” said Boca coach Ro-

dolfo

Arruabarrena as he contemplated the prospect of finding a place for Tevez in his team among a number of strikers in good form. “They all want to play but I’m the one who takes the decisions and these will always be for the good of the team,” he told reporters.

San Lorenzo drew 1-1 at Union and River were also held 1-1 by Temperley at El Monu-mental as they rested first choice players for Tuesday’s first leg of their Libertadores Cup semi-final against Guarani of Paraguay.

Sunday was also a good day for former Argentina defender Gabriel Heinze who made his coaching debut with Godoy Cruz in a 3-0 home win over Crucero del Norte in Mendoza.

Another coach Mauricio Pellegrino began his tenure at Independiente with a 3-1 home victory over Olimpo. Newell’s Old Boys fans showed their support for Lionel Messi at their 3-0 home win over Racing Club in Rosario, the Argentina captain’s home town. They dis-played a huge banner behind one of the goals that said: “Messi, being the best is what differ-entiates us from the rest.” (rtr)

SAO PAULO — Former Brazil striker Fred scored in second-half injury time to give Fluminense a 2-1 win at Atletico Paranaense on Sunday, keep-ing the Rio de Janeiro club close to the Brazilian league lead. Fred scored with a diving header three minutes into stop-page time at the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, leaving Fluminense with 27 points, two behind leader Atletico Mi-neiro, which on Saturday earned a 2-0 victory at Ponte Preta.

It was the sixth win in seven matches for Fluminense, which on Saturday announced it signed former Brazil playmaker Ronaldinho until the end of 2016. Ronaldinho had been playing for Mexican club Queretaro but returned to Brazil saying he wanted to win one of the few trophies he still doesn’t have in his successful career.

Gustavo Scarpa opened the scoring for Fluminense in the eighth minute and

Sidcley equalized for Atletico in the 66th before Fred netted the winner in injury time for his fifth goal of the competition. It was the third-straight loss for Atletico Paranaense, which dropped to eighth in the 20-team standings.

Striker Thiago Ribeiro and midfielder Giovanni Augusto scored a goal in each half in Campinas to give Atletico Mineiro its sixth win in a row, and ninth in 13 matches.

“It’s always important to win away from home, but we know we still have to improve a lot as the competition goes on,” Atletico Mineiro coach Levir Culpi said.

Atletico Mineiro, which has outscored its opponents 12-2 in the last six games, won the Copa Libertadores in 2013 and the Brazilian Cup in 2014, but hasn’t won the Brazilian league since 1971. Its rival in Belo Horizonte, Cruzeiro, won the last two league titles.

Third-place Corinthians reached 26 points by routing Flamengo 3-0 at the Maracana Stadium thanks to goals by Elias, Uendel and Jadson. Flamengo was without Peru striker Paolo Guerrero and playmaker Emerson, who transferred from Corinthians and could not play be-cause of contract restrictions. Flamengo, Brazil’s most popular club, is just two spots out of relegation zone.

Also Sunday, two-time defending champion Cruzeiro edged Goias 1-0 at the Mineirao Stadium, while fifth-place Sao Paulo beat Coritiba 3-1 at the Mo-rumbi Stadium with a pair of goals by striker Alexandre Pato and one by Argen-tine midfielder Ricardo Centurion.

Internacional defeated last-place Joinville 2-0 in Joinville to end a three-match losing streak, while Palmeiras’ four-match winning sequence was halted after it conceded a 90th-minute equalizer in a 2-2 draw at Sport. (ap)

Police have identified areas with potential conflicts, he said

He pledged that police would not take side in the election, saying he would punish officers that could not maintain the neutrality. (ant)

(ap)

(kmb40)

Volcanic ashes and rains down on Singaraja

The impact of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Raung in Bondowoso, East Java, increasingly spread to some areas of Buleleng. On Sunday, the ash was blown by gale force winds that some people say are a result of climate change. The strong winds have toppled trees throughout Buleleng and are sweeping ash into peoples homes.MBP/ist

His ruling National Front co-alition has been in power since independence from Britain in 1957. However, support for the coalition has eroded in the last two general elections. In 2013, it won the polls but lost the popular vote for the first time.(ap)

(kmb36)

(kmb27)

Surge of foreign travelers exceeds room occupancy rate

(ap)

Mount Raung on Indonesia’s main island of Java, which has been rumbling for weeks, sent an ash cloud floating over Bali on Thursday, forcing the airport to close for two days.

Thousands of tourists who were visiting the resort island famed for its palm-fringed beaches found themselves stuck at Ngurah Rai airport, near Bali’s capital Den-pasar, anxiously watching depar-ture boards, sitting and sleeping on the floor.

The airport closed again on Sunday as the ash returned but reopened several hours later after authorities gave the all-clear.

Officials said the clouds of ash continued to drift away from Bali Monday, giving airport authori-ties a chance to clear the backlog, which they said would take about three days.

“We are doing this as quickly as possible as the ash could come back any time,” airport official Yulfiadi, who like many Indo-nesians goes by one name, told AFP.

Between Thursday and Sunday, a total of 873 flights were cancelled or delayed, Yulfiadi said.

Most airlines resumed flights Sunday evening after the airport reopened, but Australian carriers Virgin Australia and Jetstar de-cided to keep services to and from Bali on hold. Many Australians are stuck in Bali after spending the school break on the island.

Virgin Australia also cancelled its flights to and from Bali Mon-day, saying their forecasters had warned that conditions were not suitable, while Jetstar resumed services during daylight hours.

Airport manager Trikora Harjo said the airport was operating nor-mally again, adding: “The weather is good so I am not sure why one or two airlines have chosen not

to fly.”The disruption also came at

a bad time for Indonesians, as millions set off on holiday ahead of the Muslim celebration of Eid this week. The airport is providing buses for Indonesians seeking to leave Bali for the holy festival.

Authorities raised the alert sta-tus of Mount Raung late last month to the second highest level, after it began to spew lava and ash high into the air.

Indonesian government vulca-nologist Gede Suantika said the wind was not blowing ash towards Bali Monday and he expected con-ditions to remain the same until at least the evening.

Besides Bali, two airports on Lombok island, also a popular holiday destination, and two small airports on Java serving domestic routes were closed by the ash cloud Thursday. All were now open ex-cept for one on Java.

Air traffic is regularly disrupted by volcanic eruptions in Indonesia, which sits on a belt of seismic ac-tivity running around the basin of the Pacific Ocean and is home to the highest number of active volca-noes in the world, around 130.

The main concern for airlines regarding volcanic ash is not that it can affect visibility but rather that it could damage jet engines, according to experts.

Ash turns into molten glass when it is sucked into aircraft engines and in extreme cases can cause them to shut down. (afp)
