Wisdom of the Saints In the case of the virtues, sir, it is very easy to pass from defect to excess, from being just to being rigorous and rashly zealous. It is said that good wine easily turns into vinegar, and that health in the highest degree is a sign of approaching illness.

—St. Vincent de Paul Christ has made my soul beautiful with the jewels of grace and virtue. I belong to Him whom the Angels serve.

—St. Agnes There is more value in a little study of humility and in a single act of it than all the knowledge in the world.

—St. Teresa of Avila

Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat Rachel’s Vineyard retreat for those who have experienced an abortion is May 13-15 or Sept 9-11, 2016. Call Cheryl Riley at 973-497-4350 for more info. Confidential. “The victims of this [throwaway] culture are precisely the weakest and most fragile human beings — the unborn, the poorest, the sick and elderly, the seriously handicapped, etc. — who are in danger of being ‘thrown away,’ expelled from a system that must be efficient at all costs. …It is necessary to raise awareness and form the lay faithful, in whatever state, especially those engaged in the field of pol-itics, so that they may think in accord with the Gospel and the social doctrine of the church and act consistently by dialoguing and collaborating with those who, in sincerity and intellectual honesty, share — if not the faith — at least a similar vision of mankind and society and its ethical con-sequences. — Pope Francis to a delegation from the Dignitatis Hu-manae Institute Dec. 7, 2013

Birth Parents Must Take Action to Preserve Their Privacy The Catholic Church has provided adoption services and she promised to honor the privacy of parents & adoptees. But on May 27, 2014, a new law took effect that will allow adoptees to request & obtain the names of their biological parents beginning Jan. 1, 2017. Any birth parents who wish to preserve their privacy must submit a Redaction Request Form to the NJ Dept. of Health no later than December 31, 2016. By filing this form, birth parents will be able to keep their names off any documents provided by the State to adoptees or anyone else. The form can be downloaded at http://nj.gov/health/forms/reg-36c.pdf If you know anyone who placed a child in adoption, please tell them that if they do not file a Redaction Request Form, their name & other info could be given to the adoptee. Anyone needing assis-tance can call a HELPLINE AT 609-989-4809.

“Our citizenship is in heaven” This past week we heard of the sudden death of Su-preme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Justice Scalia was a faithful Catholic who saw the Constitution as a basis for American juris-prudence and guarantor of not only human rights but of state's rights. He was also a strong believer in the natural law; that our human rights come from God, not because man grants them. If this were the case then man could take them away. He was of Italian descent, the child of an immigrant, he was married and had nine children, one of them in fact is a priest in the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia. A faithful Catholic, he opposed abortion and "gay marriage", however he ruled against federal legislation of these moral issues. He felt them better reserved to the will of the people and the right of states. Even though we have only had one Catholic president (John F. Kennedy) we have had several Catholic Supreme Court justices; 13 in all. Now, 5 of the remaining 8 justices are Catho-lics. Roger Brooke Taney was our first Catholic justice from 1836-1864. Though Justice Taney freed his slaves, he was in the majority opinion of the Dred Scott decision, which denied civil rights to the slaves on account that the US Constitution did not intend to give them rights. Of course a future amendment to the Constitution would give the former slaves full citizenship. As Catholics we are citizens of the United States and as such we are called to be good citizens. Recently the Pope spoke to the Mexican people who are becoming despondent over the drugs and crime in their homeland. He encouraged them to not only look forward to peace and justice in heaven, but to work now for peace and justice in this world. As Catholics we can exert our energies on making America a place of justice, peace and equity for all: for minorities, for the unborn, for the poor, & for the elderly. We can work to preserve the earth which God has given to us to use for our benefit, but if the earth is abused then what can we say for having squandered God's blessings? We are also to be good citizens of our nation. We must participate in the political process even when it seems lost and corrupt otherwise it will become a source of derision and perse-cution of believers. A good Catholic votes, seeks political office, and looks out for the common good. He or she sticks by his beliefs never compromising but rather seeking ways to live in a pluralistic society by discerning what is particularly of the Cath-olic faith, and what is universal such as the personhood of all human beings at every stage of development, the natural mar-riage of a man and a woman, the inalienable rights of every hu-man person, and most significantly the dignity of the human person. These should always be central to every citizen. To shun political life it to place oneself on the outside allowing oth-ers to dictate our way of living. So while our citizenship is in heaven, our residence is here and now. Let our light shine so that this world can be a better place for all.

First Communion Outfits Wanted First Holy Communion marks the first day on which a child is admitted to receive the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ. Our Parish is trying to make sure financial hardship does not stand in the way of it be-ing as special as it can be. The Religious Ed Office will be collecting gently used, in good condition, Communion dresses/veils, suits and shoes for our families in need for their child.

All items can be dropped off at the rectory beginning Monday, Feb 22 thru Friday, March 25 during office hours. Please contact Mr. Julian Garcia, CRE for more infor-mation at 201-343-5170. Please make sure all outfits are free of stains and clean.

Peanut Butter for Haiti Five percent of children in Haiti suffer from acute malnutrition, and almost half of women aged 15 to 49 and 65 percent of children under age five are anemic, accord-ing to the United Nation’s World Food Programme. Throughout February, our Human Concerns group will be collecting any brand of peanut butter (16-18 oz. jars of creamy peanut butter preferred) to send to Lifeline Christian Mission’s nutrition clinic in Haiti. Peanut butter provides the protein and calories that are lacking in the diets of most Haitians. Please leave jars in the box at the back of the church. They will be picked up after each mass. If you are able, please tape a quarter to each jar to help with ship-ping costs. Monetary donations or grocery store gift cards are also welcome and may be dropped off at the rectory. Collection will take place Feb. 1-29.

T L Lucia Wehr, one of our cantors, is proud to announce the release of her first CD called The Light. Lucia has performed in Italy with several opera companies.
