2020 Annual Appeal Shining the Light of Christ

As disciples, we are called to radiate the love of God in our work, our relationships, our service and our giving. As a Catho-lic faith community, our common worship, hospitality, pastoral care and ministry reflect this love to the wider community. By sharing our time, unique talents and personal treasure, we par-ticipate in shining the Light of Christ ever more brightly. So far we have 13% of our goal from only 24 donors. Keep up the good work. Our goal is $44,001. Please give a prayerful donation to this cause of good. You can give in two ways: 1. Complete the donation envelope which can be found in the

church at the doors. Please be sure to indicate our parish Holy Trinity 096. You can give some now and pay the balance over ten months.

So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:7-10).

Y ears ago when I was still yet wet behind the ears, I preached on this very passage. I mentioned that in order to

get into heaven we must be judged by Jesus Christ. Every one of us: Jew, Moslem, atheist, Protestant, and Catholic all must enter heaven through the Gate who is Jesus Christ. I thought I had given a very clear and theologically sound homily, a bit proud of myself. But as Mass ended and I was saying good-bye to the folks, a well-educated man, a dentist, approached me and said, “What about the other 2/rds. of the world that do not be-lieve in Jesus? Can’t they get into heaven?” “Yes,” I said, “but they must all be judged by Christ.” “But they don’t believe in him. How can they be judged by him?” he retorted. I was a bit baffled because as I see it whether we believe in Christ or not, we all must enter heaven through the Gate, through Jesus Christ as the Scriptures make it clear. Yes, even the Jew or Moslem, the atheist or the Hindu, must answer to Christ whether they believe in him or not. As believers, we know Jesus to be both Lord and Savior. He is not just a man who came to teach us nice things. He came as God incarnate to show us the way to heaven, the only Way, through Him. If a non-believer, by no fault of his own, does not know our Lord Jesus explicitly, perhaps implicitly he knows of a loving and merciful God who will judge him according to his own con-science. Certainly a man or woman can be both loving and for-giving yet ignorant of the one who created him out of love and forgave him through the Blood of the cross. As the catechism teaches, we who are baptized, who have come to believe in our Lord and Savior, are bound by the Sacraments of the Church and an explicit belief in his redemptive power and divine per-sonage but those who are images of God through their acts and whose faith is known to God alone, can by the will of God enter through the Gate and know some level of eternal happiness. Yes, Christ is the Gate and it is through this Gate which the saved pass, be they believers or unbelievers, Christians or not baptized, Catholic or protestant. Christ is the judge and he is merciful and just, fortunately for us and for all mankind. Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

Making Those Funeral Arrangements Planning or even thinking about one’s own funeral is unpleas-ant and therefore something we tend to push far out of our minds. When the time finally comes it leaves the family stressed and overwhelmed by all the decisions they must make. You can relieve some of this stress for your loved ones by planning your Funeral Liturgy (Mass of Christian Burial). Lynn Berhalter would like to assist you in choosing the Scriptures to be read at your funeral Mass according to the archdiocesan guidelines. She can also help you choose the hymns that will add to the solemni-ty of your Mass. This is simple to do and it helps fulfill your wishes and eases your family’s burden. Make an appointment to see Lynn at the rectory to get started. Your plans will be kept on file at Holy Trinity Church and may be amended anytime you wish. Planning ahead ensures your family that the readings and music you desired are carried out and they need not worry. It is a beautiful final gesture, a gift to those who grieve. For more info contact Sr. Catherine Marie, OP at 845-745-1319 or [email protected] Carnival News The Carnival is still set for May 20-24 but if the state still says no crowds for May then by God’s providence we have locked in an alternate date, July 1-5. Announcements will follow as things develop. T E by St. Justin Martyr, II Century No one may share the Eucharist with us unless he believes that what we teach is true, unless he is washed in the regenerating waters of baptism for the remission of his sins, and unless he lives in accordance with the principles given us by Christ. We do not consume the eucharistic bread and wine as if it were ordinary food and drink, for we have been taught that as Jesus Christ our Savior became a man of flesh and blood by the power of the Word of God, so also the food that our flesh and blood assimilates for its nourishment becomes the flesh and blood of the incarnate Jesus by the power of his own words contained in the prayer of thanksgiving. The apostles, in their recollections, which are called gospels, handed down to us what Jesus commanded them to do. They tell us that he took bread, gave thanks and said: Do this in memory of me. This is my body. In the same way he took the cup, he gave thanks and said: This is my blood. The Lord gave this com-mand to them alone. Ever since then we have constantly remind-ed one another of these things. The rich among us help the poor and we are always united. For all that we receive we praise the Creator of the universe through his Son Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit. On Sunday we have a common assembly of all our members, whether they live in the city or the outlying districts. The recol-lections of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as there is time. When the reader has finished, the presi-dent of the assembly speaks to us; he urges everyone to imitate the examples of virtue we have heard in the readings. Then we all stand up together and pray. On the conclusion of our prayer, bread and wine and water are brought forward. The president offers prayers and gives thanks to the best of his ability, and the people give assent by saying, “Amen.” The Eucharist is distributed, everyone present com-municates, and the deacons take it to those who are absent. The wealthy, if they wish, may make a contribution, and they themselves decide the amount. The collection is placed in the custody of the president, who uses it to help the orphans and widows and all who for any reason are in distress, whether be-cause they are sick, in prison, or away from home. In a word, he takes care of all who are in need. We hold our common assembly on Sunday because it is the first day of the week, the day on which God put darkness and chaos to flight and created the world, and because on that same day our savior Jesus Christ rose from the dead. For he was cruci-fied on Friday and on Sunday he appeared to his apostles and disciples and taught them the things that we have passed on for your consideration.

A Creed of St. Irenaeus of Lyon c. A.D. 200

We believe in one God, the almighty Father who made heav-en and earth and the sea and all that is in them. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who became man for our salvation. And we believe in the Holy Spirit who through the prophets foretold God’s plan:

the coming of our beloved Lord Jesus Christ, his birth from the Virgin, his passion, his resurrection from the dead, his ascension into heaven, and his final coming from heaven in the glory of his Father, to recapitulate all things and to raise all men from the dead, so that, by the decree of his invisible Father, he may make a just judgment in all things and so that every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth to Jesus Christ our Lord and our God, our Savior and our King, and every tongue confess him.

-from the treatise Against Heresies

Five Reasons We Turn to Mary in Times of Crisis Earlier this year when the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pan-demic became clear, and thousands—then millions—of people through-out the world were effected by physical, spiritual, economic and psy-chological hardships, including severe sickness and death, I began to implore the Blessed Virgin Mary, Health of the Sick, on a daily basis for her intercession and help. Throughout the ages, Christians have turned to Mary in times of war, pestilence and famine. In troubled times like these, she is a sure refuge, a source of comfort and hope. My religious order, the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) maintains a particular devotion to Mary under the title Mater de Perpetuo Succursu (Mother of Perpetual Help). As guardians of the 15th century Byzantine icon that bears this holy name, for more than 150 years my community has promoted devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help as a means of helping people in all regions of the world draw closer to Mary, the Mother of God and our mother. Pope Francis has frequently said that his favorite image for the Church is her motherhood. “The Church is feminine,” Pope Francis says. “She is a mother.” Of course, Mary is the model, the inspiration for the Church’s motherhood and for all that is holy, compassionate and loving in the Church’s life and ministry. When Mary’s influence is missing or weak, the Church no longer acts as a loving mother. That’s why we should turn to Mary in both good times and troubled times. As Mother of Perpetual Help, she is always ready to assist us, always there for us, constantly prepared to seek her Son’s guidance and support for all her children. Especially in times of grave danger, such as the current pandemic, Mary offers hope, healing and comfort to all who are in need of her maternal care. As I reflect on our current crisis, and the serious challenges it presents to individuals, families, communities and nations in all regions of the world, I see five major reasons (among many more) why we should turn to Mary our mother for her intercession and help.

Here are my five reasons. 1. People are sick and dying. Throughout the Church’s history, Chris-tians have sought Mary’s intercession in times of serious illness includ-ing pestilence and plagues. As a loving mother, Mary always responds with comfort and the healing grace of her Son. Most Holy Mother, Health of the Sick, please stay close to all who are suffering from the effects of this deadly virus. Comfort those who mourn the loss of loved ones. Encourage caregivers, first responders and all who provide essential services often at great risk to themselves. 2. People are frightened, lonely and depressed. Mary’s loving presence offers courage and hope during frightening times, especially when we are isolated from family and friends. She reassures us and reminds us that we are never alone, never without the consolation and hope won for us by her Son’s suffering, death and resurrection to new life. Mother of Holy Hope, inspire us by your perseverance and courage. Help us see that we are not going through this time of trial alone. Show us the way to Jesus, and help us to accept your loving presence as a sure sign that even in this time of social distancing, your Son holds us in his loving embrace and says to each one of us: “Be not afraid!” 3. People are out of work or afraid they will lose their jobs. Mary is alternately invoked as Our Lady of Abundance and as Mother of the Poor. She stands with us when the economy is growing and when there is widespread poverty and unemployment. She reminds us to be good stewards of all God’s gifts and to share generously with others, espe-cially the poor. Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of all the Americas, you know the riches and the poverty of the lands we share with all our sisters and brothers here. Teach us to be grateful and generous stewards. Intercede for all who are poor. Reassure all who are frightened. Help us to help each other so that no one has to go without his or her share of God’s abundance. 4. People are longing for the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Mary shows us the way to her Son. She is a sacrament of God’s presence in the world, the Gateway to Grace and a model for the Church’s prayer and worship. Deprived of access to the sacraments, and to liturgy cum populo (with our sisters and brothers), we understandably turn to Mary in the Rosary and other devotional prayers to help fill the spiritual gaps that exist in our lives. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us. Teach us to seek and find your Son, Jesus, in the prayer and worship of the Church, in the sacra-ments and in intercessory prayers to you and all the saints. Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, help us to be patient and understanding until the day

we can safely reopen our churches and once again make the sacraments available to all. 5. People need wise, prudent and compassionate leadership—now more than ever. Mary is the Mother of the Good Shepherd. His teaching and example powerfully illustrate the meaning and vital importance of serv-ant leadership. We implore the Mother of our Lord to help all our lead-ers in society and in the Church set aside their personal and political agendas so that they can place the needs of others first and foremost. Mother of Justice and of Mercy, pray for all who are leaders. Inspire us by your obedience to God’s will and your readiness to sacrifice your own needs and desires for the good of all. Open our minds and hearts to the selfless witness given to us by your Son so that we can lead our people with humility, wisdom and courage. In conclusion, I would like to once again make my own Pope Francis’s prayer to Our Lady, Health of the Sick, which uses the words of an ancient prayer, Sub tuum praesidium, actually the oldest hymn to Mary, the Mother of God, to implore her protection during the coronavirus epidemic: O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this mo-ment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our suffer-ings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen. Holy Mary, we entrust to your maternal care the health and safety of all our brothers and sisters here in the Archdiocese of Newark and through-out the world. Help us to trust in the healing power of your Son and to stay close to one another spiritually even as we are required to maintain a safe distance physically.

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R.

Un Símbolo de la fe según San Ireneo de Lyon c. A.D. 200
