“Gabriel’s Message” based on a Basque carol and paraphrased

by Sabine Baring-Gould:

The angel Gabriel from heaven came His wings as drifted snow his eyes as flame

“All hail” said he, “thou lowly maiden Mary, Most highly favored lady,” Gloria!

“For know a blessed mother thou shalt be,

All generations laud and honor thee, Thy Son shall be Emanuel, by seers foretold

Most highly favored lady,"“Gloria!

Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head “To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said,

“My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name.” Most highly favored lady. Gloria!

The sanctity of marriage and the family From the pastoral constitution on the Church in the modern world of the Second Vatican Council (Gaudium et Spes, n. 48)

Husband and wife, by the covenant of marriage, are no

longer two, but one flesh. By their intimate union of persons and of actions they give mutual help and service to each other, expe-rience the meaning of their unity, and gain an ever deeper under-standing of it day by day.

This intimate union in the mutual self-giving of two persons, as well as the good of the children, demands full fideli-ty from both, and an indissoluble unity between them. Christ the Lord has abundantly blessed this richly complex love, which springs from the divine source of love and is founded on the model of his union with the Church.

In earlier times God met his people in a covenant of love and fidelity. So now the Savior of mankind, the Bride-groom of the Church, meets Christian husbands and wives in the sacrament of matrimony. Further, he remains with them in order that, as he loved the Church and gave himself up for her, so hus-band and wife may, in mutual self-giving, love each other with perpetual fidelity.

True married love is caught up into God’s love; it is guided and enriched by the redeeming power of Christ and the saving action of the Church, in order that the partners may be effectively led to God, and receive help and strength in the sub-lime responsibility of parenthood.

Christian partners are therefore strengthened, and as it were consecrated, by a special sacrament for the duties and the dignity of their state. By the power of this sacrament they fulfill their obligations to each other and to their family, and are filled with the spirit of Christ. This spirit pervades their whole lives with faith, hope and love. Thus they promote their own perfec-tion and each other’s sanctification, and so contribute together to the greater glory of God.

Hence, with parents leading the way by example and family prayer, their children—indeed, all within the family cir-cle—will find it easier to make progress in natural virtues, in salvation and in holiness. Husband and wife, raised to the digni-ty and the responsibility of parenthood, will be zealous in ful-filling their task as educators, especially in the sphere of reli-gious education, a task that is primarily their own.

Children, as active members of the family, contribute in their own way to the holiness of their parents. With the love of grateful hearts, with loving respect and trust, they will return the generosity of their parents, and will stand by them as true sons and daughters when their parents meet with hardship and the loneliness of old age.

Making Those Funeral Arrangements Planning or even thinking about one’s own funeral is unpleas-ant and therefore something we tend to push far out of our minds. When the time finally comes it leaves the family stressed and overwhelmed by all the decisions they must make. You can relieve some of this stress for your loved ones by planning your Funeral Liturgy (Mass of Christian Burial). Lynn Berhalter would like to assist you in choosing the Scriptures to be read at your funeral Mass according to the archdiocesan guidelines. She can also help you choose the hymns that will add to the solemni-ty of your Mass. This is simple to do and it helps fulfill your wishes and eases your family’s burden. Make an appointment to see Lynn at the rectory to get started. Your plans will be kept on file at Holy Trinity Church and may be amended anytime you wish. Planning ahead ensures your family that the readings and music you desired are carried out and they need not worry. It is a beautiful final gesture, a gift to those who grieve. Call 201-343-5170 now and make your ap-pointment.

Today’s feast celebrates how the humanity of Jesus (including his entire family life) has brought saving significance into the daily rhythms of our human family life. The scriptures offer instruction and encouragement on how to share—within our families, parish families, and the wider human family—the love that God shares with us in Jesus. Selec-tions from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colossians encourage us to reflect divine love and thus find holiness in all our human rela-tionships. The reading from Matthew’s Gospel offers a living example of love in the actions Joseph took to protect his young family from danger and to nurture them within the larger family of faith of their time. SAINT THOMAS BECKET (1118-1170) December 29 To anyone who imagines conflict between religion and poli-tics to be a modern phenomenon, history witnesses otherwise. Martyred under Henry VIII in 1535, Thomas More declared, “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first!” Thomas Becket could have said the same four centuries earlier. As Henry II’s closest friend and trusted chancellor, Becket, the king presumed, could be counted on, if made archbishop, to deliver the church to royal control. But Becket experienced a profound conversion, confirmed by the ordination liturgy’s rich symbolism of the bish-op as Good Shepherd and the church as Bride of Christ. Renounc-ing secular responsibilities, distributing his wealth to the poor, Thomas became the church’s uncompromising champion. Faced with this “new” Becket, the king’s previous friendship turned into a ferocious, almost irrational hatred. As eight centuries later, Archbishop Romero would be martyred at the altar of Christ’s sacrifice, Becket was slain before the altar of Canterbury Cathe-dral by royal agents, neither the first nor last good shepherd to lay down his life as the price of freedom for Christ’s church and jus-tice for Christ’s sheep.
