Giving back to your parents with a Charitable Gift Annuity Are you looking for the perfect gift for your aging parents that would guarantee income for life? Consider opening up a charita-ble gift annuity with the Archdiocese of Newark. A charitable gift annuity can provide payments with direct deposit to your aging parents now and a gift to their parish later, all while providing you with both piece of mind and an income tax de-duction. If you would like information on this unique gift, please contact Theresa Lynch, Planned Giving Manager, Arch-diocese of Newark (973) 497-4042 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Wisdom of the Saints Between spirit and flesh there is a continual combat. Now if you wish the spirit to win, you must assist it by prayer and resist the flesh by such means as fasting, for by fasting the flesh is weak-ened.

—St. Thomas Aquinas Our body is like a jackass that must be beaten, but just a little, otherwise it will throw us to the ground, and refuse to carry us.

—St. Padre Pio We all talk of reforming others without ever reforming our-selves.

A Chapel in Ruins When St. Francis of Assisi first heard Christ speak to him through the image of the crucifix, he said, “Build my Church.” So Francis looked about and found a ruined chapel in the valley and he rebuilt it. Today you can visit the Portiuncula in Assisi enshrined in the Church of the Holy Angels. Today our chapel is in ruins. For many years I have had concerns about the sinking roof, the cracks in the walls, the beams pulling away from the walls, and the fact that the walls are no loner plumb; they are bowing outward. Finally I was able to find an engineer who would evaluate the situation and give me his advice. It was worse than I imagined. He insisted that the chapel not be used because its structural integrity is compro-mised and it could collapse. To make a long story short, the chapel has to be either repaired or rebuilt (the foundation is solid). If we choose repair it is about $200,000 with no guarantee of any other problems. If it is rebuilt the cost will be about $350,000. We have a difficult decision to make and I ask you to pray for the best solution and pray that the funds to do this work come quickly.

Thank you, Fr. Paul.

J esus said to his disciples: “Do not be afraid any longer.”

Money, wealth, material objects are peculiar things. While they are inanimate, have no intrinsic value, and carry no moral weight they can affect us because we give them tremen-dous value, treat them as if they need more care than a fellow human being, and they influence our moral decisions. We have safes, insurance, banks and locks to protect our precious items. We tend to be afraid. Afraid of being broke, afraid of tomorrow, afraid of losing what we have and worked for, and the more we have the more we fear losing it. Christ calls us to be free of this anxiety which brings on distress and isolation. And our affection for these things can make us greedy, selfish, lonely and even immoral. St. Paul said to St. Timothy, "Love of money is the root of all evil." You see, it is the love or affection we have for our money and things that bring on evil. Simply put, if we love our steak we will be reticent to share it with someone. I grew up in the recession of the seventies. I had to go to the supermarket with Mom and a calculator because we could not spend more than $200. Imagine feeding a family of six on only 200 a month? We cut coupons and looked for what was on sale, after all we had to make the mortgage and utility payments too. So now it is in my blood to be frugal and make every penny count, a bit of an obsession for me. It even invades my work at the par-ish and my approach to dealing with people. I try hard not to overspend or be frivolous but somehow there's a contractor who will overcharge or some well intentioned person who breaks something. It is then that I must realize that my love for frugality can be as obsessive as a love for money. It can cause me to be short-tempered or insensitive to others. My fears can paralyze my desires to love others as myself and do the will of the Father. So whether we possess lots of money/wealth or very little, how we allow it to possess us determines how well we will be faithful loving disciples doing God's will and doing unto oth-ers as we would have them do to us. As Jesus said, “Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be." So let's be good stewards of the blessings (both spiritual and material) God has given us and do right by those who haven't been so blessed.

Pax Christi,

Fr. Paul

In Memory of Rev. Msgr. Joseph Slinger

Father Joe, as he was known here at Holy Trinity, passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2016. Father Joe Slinger was ordained in 1970. He came to Holy Trinity in 1991 after being pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Jersey

City. After leaving Holy Trinity in 1995 he became pastor of Our Lady of the Visitation. He retired on July 1, 2011. He is best remembered for his friendly, outgoing manner. Fr. Slinger had made numerous repairs to the church; including a new roof, repair of leaky windows and he had the church painted inside. He also installed the beautiful windows in the daily chapel. May his soul and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

IN THE COMMUNITY EN LA COMUNIDAD

What to Do with the Convent The Convent now stands empty. But I have an idea: Create a House of Discernment for Women. Young women today need to know and to have the opportunity to discern their vocation as Catholics. Marriage is a noble vocation and Religious Life is a great calling, but most young Catholic women do not even know that a Consecrated Life to Service is available to them. Why not have a place for a woman to live, study and pray so that she can discover to what God is calling her. I thought it might be advantageous to the Church to have this House of Discernment here in Holy Trinity Parish. They can live together for a year or two, experience community and pray while they continue to work at their jobs. If you think this is a good idea, I am looking to form a competent committee to plan and execute this project for the greater glory of God. Let me know if you’re interested. Fr. Paul 201-343-5170

OFFERING MASSES FOR THE REPOSE OF SOULS It is customary not only to visit the graves of our dearly departed, but also to have Masses offered for the eternal repose of their souls. Hav-ing a Mass offered for the repose of a soul, and offering our own prayers, is more beneficial and comforting than a card or bouquet of flow-ers. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC): “From the beginning the church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eu-charistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the bea-tific vision of God” (CCC #1032). Contact or visit the Rectory Office at 201-343-5170 to have a Mass offered for a soul who may need your prayers to be freed from Purgatory and enter Paradise! There are many Mass-es available for this year.

YOUR KIDS WILL THANK YOU FOR GOING ON A MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER WEEKEND!
