2020 Annual Appeal Shining the Light of Christ

As disciples, we are called to radiate the love of God in our work, our relationships, our service and our giving. As a Catho-lic faith community, our common worship, hospitality, pastoral care and ministry reflect this love to the wider community. By sharing our time, unique talents and personal treasure, we par-ticipate in shining the Light of Christ ever more brightly. So far we have 13% of our goal from only 24 donors. Keep up the good work. Our goal is $44,001. Please give a prayerful donation to this cause of good. You can give in two ways: 1. Complete the donation envelope which can be found in the

church at the doors. Please be sure to indicate our parish Holy Trinity 096. You can give some now and pay the balance over ten months.

2. Go to the Archdiocesan website site www.rcan.org/sharing. Make your pledge and remember to indicate our parish Ho-ly Trinity Parish in Hackensack under “designation”.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” Growing up I always enjoyed our family road trips whether it was to Cincinnati to visit old friends or Cooperstown and the Hall of Fame or to New Hampshire for a vacation on a lake with the cousins. To this day, I think I enjoy getting there as much if not more than actually being there. I like the adventure, the un-certainty and the scenery. And once I get to where I'm going, I am happy to be there, appreciating what it took to get there. Our sojourn to heaven, to eternal life, is like my road trips. In this life we are traveling on our way to heaven. Sojourning through this life, we experience much of what life has to offer. The excitement, the uncertainty, and the beauty are all there, as long as we open our hearts and minds to see and know all that God is revealing to us on the way. Jesus said he is the way, the way to heaven. And as we go to heaven he leads us by his truth so that we can attain at last to eternal life. Jesus is our GPS, our global positioning system, or should I say our God’s Plan for Salvation. Like the GPS in our car, we have a final destination which is eternal life. But to get there we must follow the Way of Jesus and by listening to his truths we stay in the right direction.

When we take a wrong turn on the road, the GPS starts correct-ing us, putting us back on the right path. Jesus is the truth and when we follow his (God’s Plan for Salvation) guidance, we are heading in the right direction, but when we ignore the truth or follow another path or dabble in falsehoods, lies and sins, Jesus is always there to put us back on the straight narrow to heaven. He said, "the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to de-struction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few." Let's make sure we are on the narrow road that leads to eternal life by following God’s Plan for Salvation, by knowing his truth, and ultimately arriving at our final desti-

nation---eternal life with God and all his angels and saints.

Making Those Funeral Arrangements Planning or even thinking about one’s own funeral is unpleas-ant and therefore something we tend to push far out of our minds. When the time finally comes it leaves the family stressed and overwhelmed by all the decisions they must make. You can relieve some of this stress for your loved ones by planning your Funeral Liturgy (Mass of Christian Burial). Lynn Berhalter would like to assist you in choosing the Scriptures to be read at your funeral Mass according to the archdiocesan guidelines. She can also help you choose the hymns that will add to the solemni-ty of your Mass. This is simple to do and it helps fulfill your wishes and eases your family’s burden. Make an appointment to see Lynn at the rectory to get started. Your plans will be kept on file at Holy Trinity Church and may be amended anytime you wish. Planning ahead ensures your family that the readings and music you desired are carried out and they need not worry. It is a beautiful final gesture, a gift to those who grieve. Call 201-343-5170 now and make your ap-pointment. Catholic Charities Bins To Open Again

Sentinel Management has notified Catholic Charities that our Donation Bins are anticipated to be open as of May 18th. We are grateful for your patience and look forward to your con-tinued support. We need clothing, small appliances, shoes,

linens, sheets, towels, stuffed animals, novels, toys, knickknacks, and children’s books.

We pray for an end of this virus in our society and throughout the world. Thank you with all our heart.

The Spiritual Virus of Acedia & Its Vaccination The early Christian desert father Evagrius of Pontus (345-399) presented “eight wicked thoughts” which would become in the pen of St. Gregory the Great the seven capital sins. It is easy for us to think of these as spiritual viruses, diseases of the soul. Among these eight, Evagrius notes the spiritual sickness of “acedia.” Evagrius describes acedia (from the Greek literally meaning “lack of care”) thus, “The demon of acedia, also called the noonday demon (cf. Ps. 90:6), is the most oppressive of all the demons. He attacks the monk about the fourth hour [10am] and besieges his soul until the eighth hour [2pm]. First of all, he makes it appear that the sun moves slowly or not at all, and that the day seems to be fifty hours long. Then he compels the monk to look constantly to-wards the windows, to jump out of his cell […]. And further, he instills in him a dislike for the place and for his state of life it-self, for manual labor, and also the idea that love has disap-peared from among the brothers and there is no one to console him. […] he deploys every device in order to have the monk leave his cell and flee the stadium.” This spiritual virus “in the middle of our day”, that is in the mid-way point of our commitments and work, bids us to leave and flee, to “go to the window” (or Windows, if you prefer) to look for distraction. Acedia, a dangerously unnamed virus, is born from a sadness about the divine joy. As a consequence, we go looking. Evagrius fingers five symptoms of this virus of the soul: a certain interior instability, an exaggerated concern for one’s health, aversion to manual work, neglect in observing the rule, and general discouragement. We are all monks today. We all have our commitments. We each have “cells” in which we ought to stay. Yet perhaps by now each of us knows all too well the boredom of this daily chamber, this quotidian monotonous routine. What is to be done? Evagrius has five suggestions. The first is a recognition that we are sick, that we need to be saved. He calls it simply “tears.” The second is motto of another great monk, St. Bene-dict: prayer and work. The third remedy against acedia is to dash the dark thoughts against the Rock, who is Christ: “Lord, come to my assistance…”, or the “Jesus” prayer. Fourth, Evagrius says one ought to meditate on death! Why? One reason is it counteracts the self-centeredness that can set in. However, it also restores a sense of the meaningfulness of the passing time. Finally, perseverance in a daily routine. St. Ignatius of Loyola counsels us to never make a decision in time of darkness and desolation (though that is precisely our instinct!) In matters of perseverance, perhaps little matters except that we endure, we continue. This too shall pass, and Evagrius simply notes that “a state of peace and ineffable joy ensues in the soul after this struggle.” None of us are really alone. In case you are curious, acedia would later be translated as sloth. However, be careful! it is something far more pernicious than laziness.

Quoted as in Jean-Charles Nault. The Noonday Devil: Acedia, the Unnamed Evil of Our Times. (San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 2015): 28-29.

Reflection by Sr. Mary Martha, FSP As I keep making my way through the various challenges of 2020—fear of sickness and contagion, unemployment, disap-pointments, cancellations, isolation, and the daily predictions of what could happen that seem to loom on the horizon in every newspaper article I read—I am learning to simplify. Yes, simplify. To what point? Well, to remember that the main thing IS the main thing. God is in charge, not me, not the virus, not all the deprivations, not anything you or I can think of. Only God is in charge. And God is good, tremendously good, more than I can imagine. This good God has an unshakeable faithful love for each and every one of us, and for humankind as a whole. Therefore, I, a simple creature, will praise Him. I can trust Him, of that I have no doubt (on my better days!) and I will praise him, because he is caring for me and helping me care for others in all this. I see him inspiring good in the hearts of people even in the midst of chaos and sorrow. And that loving and caring has a divine power that we cannot see, but we can sort of sense it, and its value and power reaches into Eternity. God works with us, with our “yesses.” Those “yesses” to goodness said in love become part of a beauti-ful sacred story. So I will trust, I will praise, and I will love, by the grace of God
