Life with Christ: The Christian Funeral The Celebration of Funerals

1684 The Christian funeral confers on the deceased neither a sacra-ment nor a sacramental since he has "passed" beyond the sacramen-tal economy. It is nonetheless a liturgical celebration of the Church. The ministry of the Church aims at expressing efficacious commun-ion with the deceased, at the participation in that communion of the community gathered for the funeral and at the proclamation of eter-nal life to the community. 1685 The different funeral rites express the Paschal character of Christian death and are in keeping with the situations and traditions of each region, even as to the color of the liturgical vestments worn. 1686 The Order of Christian Funerals (Ordo exsequiarum) of the Roman liturgy gives three types of funeral celebrations, corre-sponding to the three places in which they are conducted (the home, the church, and the cemetery), and according to the importance attached to them by the family, local customs, the culture, and pop-ular piety. This order of celebration is common to all the liturgical traditions and comprises four principal elements: 1687 The greeting of the community. A greeting of faith begins the celebration. Relatives and friends of the deceased are welcomed with a word of "consolation" (in the New Testament sense of the Holy Spirit's power in hope). The community assembling in prayer also awaits the "words of eternal life." The death of a member of the community (or the anniversary of a death, or the seventh or fortieth day after death) is an event that should lead beyond the perspectives of "this world" and should draw the faithful into the true perspective of faith in the risen Christ.

Month of Remembrance November is here. It is not only the last month of the Liturgical Year, but also a time to remember last things, like death, judg-ment, heaven and hell.

Table of Remembrance As is our tradition here, we will have Our Table of Remem-brance. Please bring photographs of your beloved deceased with name and address on the back to the rectory soon so that we may place them on the Table of Remembrance.

Requiem Mass Also we will have a Requiem Mass on November 6 at 7:30 PM in memory of those parishioners who passed this year and all of our deceased loved ones. Also, all Masses on All Souls’ Day, Nov. 2 and other select Masses are offered daily for our departed faithful through the month for whom you asked the priests to pray.

THE GREATEST AMONG US Whom do you admire? Is it the President of the United States or a movie star or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great. Like the Pharisees in to-day’s Gospel, they have places of honor wherever they go. Would you like to follow in their footsteps? The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we are to honor and imi-tate. We are called to be like Paul, who worked hard to serve the needs of his communities, and Jesus, who gave his life in service to the world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION What is the name of the pope’s cathedral? If you said the Vatican, or St. Peter’s, you were off by a few miles, since the answer is the Basilica of St. John, the Lateran, the “Mother Church” of all the churches of the world and the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. It takes its name from the Lateran family, the Trumps of their day, who somehow ran afoul of the Emperor Nero. He seized all their property, including their vast Roman palace and es-tate. We don’t know how Plautius displeased Nero so bad-ly, but eventually all the Lateran property came to Con-stantine, the first Christian emperor, through his wife, Fausta. Early in the fourth century, when Christianity was at last legalized, Constantine gave the property to the church. Soon the great meeting halls were expanded and adapted. Over the centuries, the church building has been sacked by armies, ruined by fire, torn down, and rebuilt. The oldest and most unchanged part of the Lateran is a vast, separate baptistery with steps leading down to a huge green basalt pool. Imagine what a triumphal moment the dedication of this public church building was for a com-munity that had worshiped in secret for so long! This Thursday’s feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica is really about the tradition of consecrating space for wor-ship, and so by extension, a feast for your parish church building and, given the beautiful second reading, for its baptistery as well. —Rev. Parish Hall Refreshments Served

Once upon a time, there was God. And that's the end of the story.

Goodbye, Our Father. Farewell forever, heavenly beings. If we don't see you, we don't believe in you. We've chosen to live as if you didn't exist. However... millions of people keep speaking with Jesus Christ, whom they call "Brother." And with the Virgin Mary, whom they call

"Mother." They believe we are all God's children and thus call him "Father." The Devil's Advocate receives a new mission: to fearlessly

investigate those who still trust Heaven's formulas. Are they swindlers? Swindled? If he discovers that their beliefs are bogus, our lives will

remain the same. But... what if they're not a fairy tale?

RIGHT AND WRONG What is morally wrong can never be politically right.

Making Those Funeral Arrangements Planning or even thinking about one’s own funeral is un-pleasant and therefore something we tend to push far out of our minds. When the time finally comes it leaves the family stressed and overwhelmed by all the decisions they must make. You can relieve some of this stress for your loved ones by planning your Funeral Liturgy (Mass of Christian Burial). Lynn Berhalter would like to assist you in choosing the Scrip-tures to be read at your funeral Mass according to the archdi-ocesan guidelines. She can also help you choose the hymns that will add to the solemnity of your Mass. This is simple to do and it helps fulfill your wishes and eases your families’ burden. Make an appointment to see Lynn at the rectory to get started. Your plans will be kept on file at Holy Trinity Church and may be amended anytime if you wish. Planning ahead ensures your family that the readings and music you desired are carried out and they need not worry. It is a beautiful final gesture, a gift to those who grieve. Call 201-343-5170 now and make your appointment.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
