Page 1: Digestive System

Food is chewed up. This gives it a large surface area so that more chemicals can work on it. Amylase also breaks starch down into glucose

Peristalsis gets food to the stomach. Circular muscles push food down the oesophagus. Longitudinal muscles keep the food in a ball shape.

Breaks food down even more. Acids in the stomach break food down. Pepsin breaks insoluble proteins into soluble amino acids.

Amylase breaks starch into glucose. Protease breaks proteins into amino acids. Lipase breaks fats into 3 fatty acids and 1 glycerol.Villi and micro villi have a large surface area which allows for rapid diffusion. The outside layer is one cell thick. This meansthere is a small diffusion pathway. There is a good blood supply to the villi which allows for rapid diffusion

Produces bile that can break fats down in order for enzymes to work on them

Stores bile that will can neutralise stomach acids

Produces Amylase, Protease and Lipase which is then injected into the small intestine

Anything that is left will then exit the body as waste. Water will be reabsorbed into the body
