Recycling ServiceIf you are interested in our rear door pick-up recycling service – paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and metal – for less than $3 per month, contact AmeriWaste at 281-331-8400. For a minimal one-time fee, AmeriWaste will deliver to your home a rolling recycling bin with hinged cover. The blue bins have replaced the older, smaller open bins.

Tennis Court Key Deposit RefundsOver the years, some homeowners have paid deposits (in varying amounts) to obtain a tennis court key. Since we have installed electronic locks on the tennis courts – there is no longer a need for the keys. If you paid a deposit for your key – we want to give your deposit back to you. All you need to get a refund is your key and the deposit receipt. If you cannot locate your deposit receipt, we will be glad to accept your word and the key to receive the return of a $10 deposit. After December 7th, no further refunds will be made and any remaining key deposit funds will be transferred into the tennis court maintenance account. Refunds will be conducted at our community pool facility at

15715 Lake Lodge.

Flooring Source put in our wood floors in 2008 and tile floors in 2012. They are extremely professional and show up when promised. Our wood floors are just gorgeous, and they did an excellent job of tearing up the old carpet, leveling the floor/slab, and installing. The tile job was a bit messier, just because of the dust that is created. But they did an excellent tear out and install, and even put in a nice transition with my kitchen tile using smaller cut squares and triangles. The have a nice showroom on Friendswood. Very nice staff.

December 2013 / January 2014 5(Yard of the Month continued on page 6)

Selecting the Yard of the Month for Bay Forest is a fun, but difficult job. We have so many beautiful yards in our neighborhood! Thank you all for all the effort you put into keeping your yards looking so wonderful. Even this time of year we found several beautiful yards, but two rose above the rest. Congratulations to: Joyce and Al Bowman at 15714 Hillside Falls Trail, and Christine and Ulf Hoffman at 2102 Cherrytree Ridge.

Bay Forest Yard of the Month

15714 Hillside Falls TrailThe Bowmans have a steep, shallow front yard which they have basically terraced for a tremendous amount of texture and detail. A narrow strip of grass near the street rises up to a flower bed filled with cheerful yellow Mums, colorful Petunias and purple Shamrock plants. Another narrow strip of lawn separates the flowers from a raised bed of shrubs. Ligustrum rises above Pittosporum and Knock-out Roses, creating a

very structured and layered garden. But this formality is not without its fun... a large topiary basket filled with metal flowers rests next to their garage. While most of the detail in this corner yard is at the front of the house, there is a line of Crape Myrtle along the side of the house that looks spectacular in June.

Page 6: Bay Forest News December 2013 / January 2014

December 2013 / January 2014 6

Bay Forest Yard of the Month

Hoffman at 2102 Cherrytree RidgeSpring is in full bloom this month in the relaxed front yard of Christine and Ulf Hoffman. We had to check the calendar when we saw Azaleas and Roses in full bloom on Cherrytree Ridge! Encore Azaleas frame the house in pink, and a long bed of blooming roses leads the driveway to the garage. Ligustrum trees flanking the front door and two large Pine trees provide structure for this exuberant garden. Brick borders for the raised flower beds manage to contain the lush Lantanas and ferns. The large Pine in the front lawn is ringed by graceful ornamental grasses, and beautifully showcases their decorative house number sign. Don't be frightened to come and look at this house, the carved wooden bear on the front porch is really quite friendly.

We will be driving around next month looking for the best Holiday decorations in Bay Forest. If you know of a house (maybe even yours?) that you feel deserves consideration, please don't just wish... send a nomination to [email protected]. We really appreciate your nominations! We are looking for a few people to join our committee and help us to select the best of the best. If you are interested, please let us know by sending an email to [email protected].

Bay Forest Gourmet ClubAs temperatures drop below 40ᵒ, can the holiday party be far behind? This year, in keeping with the theme of wine regions of the world, our Christmas locale will be France. French wines have always been thought of as the cream-of-the crop, and they have the unique distinction of being named after their region of origin (Burgundy, Bordeaux, etc.), while wines from elsewhere are named after their grape variety. At the time of this writing the menu had not been finalized, but here is a recipe from last year. Meanwhile, since our last party in October, we continued the “Gourmet November Birthday Girls” tradition with a lunch at Big Daddy’s Gumbo in League City.

Roasted Baby Potatoes with HerbsServes: 10

• 1 pound small red-skinned potatoes (about 1¾ inch diameter), scrubbed

• 1 pound small white-skinned potatoes (about 1¾ inch diameter), scrubbed

• 2 tablespoon herbes de Provence, plus extra for garnish• 6 cloves garlic, minced• ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Put the potatoes into a large bowl. In a small bowl, whisk the herbs, garlic, and oil together until blended, and then pour over the potatoes. Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper and toss to coat. Transfer the potatoes to a large rimmed baking sheet spacing them evenly apart.

Roast the potatoes until they are tender and golden, turning them occasionally with tongs, about 1 hour. Transfer the roasted potatoes to a decorative platter and drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and herbes de Provence, if desired. Serve hot or warm.

Bay Forest Family Holiday Party

On Dasher, On Dancer, On Prancer and Vixen...

Come meet Santa Claus at the Bay Forest Family Holiday Party!

Sunday, December 15, 20132:00 - 4:00 pm

Willow Shores ParkEveryone is welcome! Of course, Santa Claus is the main attraction, but we'll have crafts and games for the kids to play too. Each family is asked to bring a snack to share. Additional important information on how to ensure that Santa has a gift for your child will be distributed through the Mommies Group e-mail. If you are not in this e-mail group it is very important that you contact Anita Burns (even last minute) for specific information on party activities. We do not want any children to be disappointed because Santa didn't know they were coming. This is very important! Santa never wants to miss a child, and the elves don't pack spare gifts!

For more information please contact: Anita Burns 281-282-9889 [email protected]

Meanwhile, to help get into the Christmas Spirit, here are some pictures from last year's party for you to enjoy.

DECA success at Mini Competition Clear Lake DECA had a great start to its competitive year on Friday, November 1. Sixteen Falcons competed in various events, including Apparel and Accessories Marketing/Retail Merchandising, Business Services Marketing/Marketing Management or Sports and Entertainment Marketing.
