REYANA STEYN The sound of revving engines, screeching tyres and the smell of rubber into the early hours of the next morning. This is what Parow residents have to endure now that illegal drag racing seems to be picking up again. The City of Cape Town is on full alert to stop this dangerous activity which has already claimed so many lives across the city. Traffic officers arrested two ille- gal drag racers on Tuesday, one of whom is a police officer. Residents say the drag racing is a menace to society and that they are fed up. “Traffic officers were on patrol in Parow when they observed a silver Nissan Sabre and a purple Nissan Sentra blocking traffic at the inter- section of 35th Avenue and Francie van Zijl Drive,” says Inspector Max- ine Jordaan, from the city’s traffic services. “Both motorists were keeping traffic behind them at bay as they positioned their vehicles in line with the traffic lights. They pro- ceeded to spin their wheels and, in a cloud of excessive smoke, sped off as the traffic light turned green – racing down Francie van Zijl Drive.” She says the traffic officers saw that the illegal drag racers were driving in an extremely dangerous manner as there were vehicles in front of and behind them. “They raced with total disregard for the safety of other motorists. Traffic officers gave chase and man- aged to stop both motorists. Both were arrested and charged with reckless and negligent driving.” Jasmine Hill, a Parow resident, says drag racers have no considera- tion for the innocent people who could get hurt. “Not only is it their own lives that are in danger, but innocent people could be injured in the process. They are doing it where they can easily hit a pedestrian or even crash into a house where people can be hurt. So many innocent people have already died due to this dangerous game they are playing, yet they still continue.” She added that the noise levels that go along with the racing is also problematic. “At night you can also hear how they are being cheered on by specta- tors. It is unsafe and must be ad- dressed.” Freddie Kearns, a Parow resident and councillor of the Cravenby ar- ea, says these drag racers move from time to time when they see the traffic officials are hot on their tracks. “Three years ago two youngsters died after speeding in Francie van Zijl Road, yet instead of stopping the drag racers, they simply moved to another spot. The days which are known for drag racing taking place are on Tuesdays, Thursday and Fri- days and we (residents) have to put up with it. These are youths who want to brag, showing off their cars, some even just got their licences and want to show their driving skills yet they cannot control the cars and this is when accidents hap- pen.” JP Smith, mayco member for safety and security, says the Ghost Squad which was started to combat crime including drag racing is clamping down on drag racers and they will soon have cameras in- stalled on the dashboards of their vehicles. “This will be done to ensure that people who partake in drag racing will be caught. The city is clamping down on drag racing and various operations are taking place. Re- gardless who is caught doing it they will suffer the consequences of their actions.” Smoke and noise streams into the suburb when drag racers take to the streets. ) Scourge seems to be increasing Races drag area down

    The sound of revving engines,

    rubber into theearlyhoursof the

    next morning.

    This is what Parow residents

have to endurenow that illegal drag

racing seems to be picking up

    again.

The City of Cape Town is on full

alert to stop this dangerous activity

    which has already claimed somany

    lives across the city.

    Traffic officers arrested two ille-

gal drag racers on Tuesday, one of

    whom is a police officer.

Residents say the drag racing is

a menace to society and that they

    are fed up.

Traffic officers were on patrol in

Parow when they observed a silver

Nissan Sabre and a purple Nissan

Sentra blocking traffic at the inter-

section of 35th Avenue and Francie

    vanZijl Drive, says InspectorMax-

ine Jordaan, from the citys traffic

    services.

    Both motorists were keeping

traffic behind them at bay as they

    positioned their vehicles in line

with the traffic lights. They pro-

ceeded to spin their wheels and, in

a cloud of excessive smoke, sped off

as the traffic light turned green

    racing down Francie van Zijl

    Drive.

She says the traffic officers saw

that the illegal drag racers were

    driving in an extremely dangerous

manner as there were vehicles in

    front of and behind them.

    They raced with total disregard

for the safety of other motorists.

    Traffic officers gave chase andman-

aged to stop both motorists. Both

    were arrested and charged with

    reckless and negligent driving.

    Jasmine Hill, a Parow resident,

tion for the innocent people who

    could get hurt.

Not only is it their own lives that

are in danger, but innocent people

could be injured in the process.

They are doing it where they can

    easilyhit apedestrianor evencrash

into a house where people can be

    hurt. Somany innocent people have

already died due to this dangerous

game they are playing, yet they still

    continue.

She added that the noise levels

that go along with the racing is also

    problematic.

At night you can also hear how

they are being cheered onby specta-

tors. It is unsafe and must be ad-

    dressed.

and councillor of the Cravenby ar-

ea, says these drag racers move

from time to timewhen they see the

traffic officials are hot on their

    tracks.

    Three years ago two youngsters

died after speeding in Francie van

Zijl Road, yet instead of stopping

the drag racers, they simply moved

to another spot. The days which are

known for drag racing taking place

are on Tuesdays, Thursday and Fri-

days and we (residents) have to put

some even just got their licences

and want to show their driving

skills yet they cannot control the

cars and this iswhen accidents hap-

    JP Smith, mayco member for

Squad which was started to combat

    crime including drag racing is

clamping down on drag racers and

    REYANA STEYN

Scores of Parow police officers and com-

    munitymembers this week held amemo-

    rial service forawomanwhowasalleged-

ly killed by a family member.

Diane Snyders, who lived on the street,

was shot in cold blood last week at the Parow

Centre. Parow police are still investigating

    the motive for the shooting.

A family member was arrested after the

shooting and faces charges of murder.

The memorial service took place at the

Bedford Street parking area on Monday.

At the service various songs were sung

and a memorial was held as her friends re-

    membered the person she was.

Colonel Phindi Ntungele, the Parow police

    station commander, arranged the memorial

service because Snyders was loved by so

    many people.

She was a good person and always cared

for others, said Lt Kevin Williams, the

    Parow police spokesperson.

We wanted to celebrate her life and the

happy person she was regardless of her liv-

    ing conditions.

She always had a smile on her face and

lived an honest life. She was friends with

everyone. The police service is also at the

starting point to get more interaction be-

tween Parow police and street people in the

area to find ways to assist them.

On the dayNtungele also gave an emotion-

al tribute to her friendship with Snyders.

    Memorial for murder victim

Friends and police officers gathered in Bedford Street to hold the memorial service.

    n Vroue-oggend sal op Saterdag 13 Okto-

ber by die Laerskool De Tyger in Parow

    plaasvind.

Dit begin 09:00 vir 09:30 en kaartjies kos

    R130 per persoon.

Die spreker sal Danil de Kock wees.

Marius Kaalvoetklong sal vir die sang

sorg. n Karatekenner, Sensei Louis, en

buikdansers sal ook optree. Almal moet n

blom of hoed dra. Die drag is stylvol. Vir

navrae, kontak Jackie by 082 639 9423 (na

    ure) of Nicky by 076 101 8042.

Food to go: High Street Shopping Centre recently held a competition in which food

was collected for Meals on Wheels. Nicolene Venter (middle), marketing manager of

High Street Shopping Centre presented the groceries to Linda Louw (manager of Meals

on Wheels and the Tygerberg Service centre) and Patricia Ellis from the centre.

    REYANA STEYN

A Parow teenager determined to help a

little girlwho is in dire need of a cochlear

implant is setting various plans in mo-

tion to ensure that enough awareness is

raised and that she gets the assistance

    she needs.

    TygerBurger previously reported (Self-

less teenager also raising funds, Tyger-

Burger, 4 September) that four-year-old Si-

mone Pienaar, fondly known as Siemie to

her family, was diagnosed as being deaf

when shewas twoyears old andneeds a coch-

lear implant. She has also been diagnosed

with Fanconi syndrome a disorder of the

    kidney tubes.

The family fromBoksburg, Gauteng has to

watch their daughter deteriorate as they are

unable to raise the R200 000 needed for a co-

    chlear implant operation.

Their medical aid will only cover R22 500.

Her operation has had to be postponed un-

til the funds can be raised.

Teenager, Bianca Haller (17) took it upon

herself to try and make a difference by rais-

    ing the much-needed funds.

The selfless student who attends Tyger-

berg High School heard about Siemies con-

dition and knew she wanted to assist the girl

    in getting her operation.

Bianca along with her friends will be

standing at the Plattekloof robots this Satur-

day to raise awareness. They will be holding

placards urging people to assist Siemie.

I want to do everything I can to assist Sie-

mie and it is great to see that people are will-

ing to come on board, she says.

She deserves a chance at having a good

life and hopefully we will raise the money to

assist her, so she can have her operation.

With the help of Biancas mother she is al-

so planning a spectacular wine auction on

Thursday 29 November at the Jaco Vercuiel

Hall at the Jan Burger Sports ground in

    Parow North.

The auction is open to corporate busi-

nesses as well as friends who can fill a table

of 10, says Liza de Jager, Biancas mother.

There will be 20 tables available at a cost

of R100 to book. There will also be a steak

braai and a cash bar available. There will al-

so be a WP Cricket Jersey for auction. We

want as many people as possible to come on

    board and assist Siemie.

Bianca and Liza have also planned a fund-

raising dance for next year in January at the

    Horskool Tygerberg, after the holidays.

We are looking for any artists who are in-

terested to come on board to provide the en-

tertainment or provide any auction goods.

Chrismi Pienaar, Siemies mom, says it is

    unbelievablewhatBianca andher family are

doing. They have done so much, and we re-

ally appreciate it. Siemie is so lucky to have

such good people who care about her.

Anybody who is interested in the events

can contact Liza on 071 267 1560 or send an

    email to [email protected].

    Fundraising continues

Big plans are being set in motion to assist Si-

    mone Siemie Pienaar.

    Afteraharddayswork,nothingbeats go-

ing to the gym and finishing it off with

    a workout and a swim.

That was the plan for Wilfred Jordaan

who headed to the Plattekloof Planet Fitness

Gym on Thursday, but then he was hit with

a rude awakening when his iPhone and

R1 500 cash was stolen out of a locker.

Jordaan went to the gym and afterwards

went to the locker to collect his goods.

When I got to the locker I saw the lock

was jammed, but never paid much attention

    to it, he says.

I thought I left my cellphone in my car

and went to look, but then it wasnt there.

I checked inside my wallet and the cash was

    all gone.

    Jordaan immediatelywent to themanager

and reported the matter, who said they

    would investigate it.

He also headed to the Parow police station

where a case of theft was opened.

I am shocked at what happened, he tells

    TygerBurger.

I went to relax at the gym and then this

happens. However, I believe this has hap-

pened to another woman a few weeks ago

and measures must be put into place to pre-

    vent future robberies from happening.

He warns people to be careful and watch

    their personal possessionswhen they attend

    the gym.

Another gym member had her Nokia cell-

phone and R430 cash stolen after she placed

some of her goods in a locker.

On Friday 24 August I went to the gym

and participated in a spin class and when I

got out and went to collect my things, my

    money and cellphone were gone.

She says she reported the incident toman-

agement who said they would look into it as

    it was an isolated case.

They said they would follow up on the

matter, but after contacting them a few

times I was told the gym cannot be held lia-

ble, but I believe they should be. The lockers

are very flimsy and somethingmust be done

    about it.

    Bradley Emmett, manager of Plattekloof

Planet Fitness said they are aware of the

case and it is under investigation.

We are doing our own internal investiga-

    tion into the matter.

There are cameras in the gym, however,

locker room theft often presents a challenge

within the gym industry as this is an area

where it is illegal to install a surveillance

system, so at times we are subject to inci-

dents of this nature which are beyond our

    control.

Emmett says they will assess all the lock-

ers to ensure they are in a good sound condi-

tion and we will make regular visits to the

change-room so that they can install more

of a staff presence to ensure that these inci-

    dents dont repeat themselves.

We would like to urge our members

where possible to make use of the valuables

lockers which are under camera surveil-

lance or to not leave their possessions in the

lockers for a period longer than their train-

    ing times althoughweunderstand that this

    was not possible.

We do however, monitor incidents such

as these and take appropriate action and in-

vestigation, should there be an increase in

    activities such as this.

    ANDR BAKKES

    While walking through the rows

of toys at the TheoMarais Sports

    Complex in Milnerton on Satur-

day, itwaseasy to imagine the in-

    nocent dolls studying the people

    passing by.

    Then,whenno-one iswithin ears-

hot, the model cars would rev their

engines and the tiny plastic men on

    the intricately designed plastic dis-

    play world would stretch their

backs and promptly return to their

    default position to avoid suspicion.

All this plays out in the imagina-

    tion, of course.

    Or does it?

    When TygerBurgers journalist

walked past the giant Bismarck bo-

at model, the rows of guns moved

    with him...

He turned his head in disbelief

    and then the propeller startedwhiz-

    zing alarmingly.

I tried to act nonchalant while I

    leapt back in horror.

The older man with the remote

    control giggled like anaughty child.

Isnt that, after all, what these

    conventions are all about? Getting

in touch with ones inner child?

The Cape Model and Toy club

members insist it is more about col-

lecting those toys that leave todays

adults reminiscing of a bygone era

    a less hurried time.

    Present-day children sometimes

stare in fascination at the things

their parents did when they were

    young, and even sometimes desire

    something they never knew.

    Therewere indeed children at the

    annual Spring Fair on Saturday,

but their wide eyes were for once

    matched by their adult peers.

    And peers they were!

    Everyone who walked into the

bustling and colourful hall at the

    sport complex shared an unparalle-

    led wonder.

TygerBurger is told that the club

is trying to get as much exposure

as possible to the Toy Shows so as

to grow the hobby and to encourage

    the younger generation to take

part, but perhaps it gives them an

excuse to show off their toys to like-

    minded adults.

Members buy and sell various ty-

pes of die-cast toys, train sets, slot

cars, plastic kits and all manner of

    collectable toys.

The club has between 160 and 170

    members.

Cape, during which 10 police bands and

choirs will compete against each other.

The event has been gaining momentum

since its inception in 1992. It has also suc-

ceeded in achieving its mandate to unite the

    The first full-

    length musical by

    legendary theatrical

    team Sir Andrew

    Lloyd Webber and

    Tim Rice, Joseph and

    the Amazing Techni-

    color Dreamcoat, is a

    retelling of the bibli-

    cal story of Joseph,

    his devoted father,

    his jealous brothers,

    and his incredible se-

    ries of adventures.

    The musical was

    only 20 minutes long

    when an unknown

    19-year-old named

    Andrew Lloyd Web-

    ber first created it for

    aBritish school choir

    in 1968.

He asked his friend Rice to write

the lyrics and soon they expanded

it to 40 minutes and took it to the

    London stage.

Since then, the show has contin-

ued to grow, both in length and pop-

    ularity.

    Filled with youthful energy, Jo-

    seph combines awide variety ofmu-

sical styles from country to calypso

to rock n roll in a series of memo-

    rable musical numbers. Described

    as a high-voltage extravaganza, it

includes such classic songs as the

    contemplative Any Dream Will

    Do, the Caribbean infused Benja-

    min Calypso, the dazzling Jacob

    and Sons/Josephs Coat, the roc-

kabilly sensation Song of the King

    (SevenFatCows) and theunforget-

    table Go, Go, Go Joseph.

    Hanekom says: Choosing Joseph

gave Northlink the chance to cast

scholars in the show. The children

add so much to this musical and

    they will gain valuable experience

    performing in a stage show.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Con wasnt

    from city

On Monday, 10 September, a tallish, light

coloured man in his mid-20s rang the

    doorbell.

He was here a week before that, but I

didnt go to the door as I was alone at

home. This timemy husbandwas at home

so I opened the door. The guy showed me

a tag (which I couldnt read without my

glasses) and pretended to be from the city

council sayinghehas to check indoor elec-

tricity meters, plugs and switches. So we

let him in. He had a clipboard and wrote

the meter number down, and then

checked plugs and switches. Then he

    asked about upstairs, somyhusband took

him upstairs to the two bedrooms and the

bathroom. While he was in the bedrooms

he asked my husband to switch on all the

    lights upstairs and downstairs. While

my husband was doing this, this b*****d

stole two rings worth about R60 000.

He also stolemy cellphone, R450 in cash

and a Musica voucher for R250. We are

pensioners and cant afford this kind of

    loss!

    Personeel verdien lof

Ek was bevoorreg om deur die verkeersde-

partement uitgenooi te word na hulle uit-

reik-geleentheid by die Alta du Toit-nasorg-

    sentrum.

Op pad soontoe het ek gewonder hoeveel

mense wat hiervan te hore kom, nie sal s

    die verkeersdepartement moet liewer aan-

dag gee daaraan om motoriste te vang wat

    in woongebiede jaag nie.

    Die opgewondenheid van die inwoners

vanAlta duToit hetmy laat besef hoe belang-

waarmee die personeel hierdie inwoners be-

    nader.

Ek wil van die geleentheid gebruik maak

om die verkeersdepartement en spesiaal die

senior inspekteur, Waldo Prinsloo, te be-

    volgende opmerking gemaak: Hierdie perso-

neel verdien eendagalmal n goue stoel in die

Ek het geen simpatie of empatie met iemand

wat op straat staan en bedel nie. Ek glo dat

hulle net te lui is om tewerk en dat ditmakli-

ke geld is. Jyhet gesondheid. As jy ngesonde

verstand het kan jy vir jou werk skep. Elke

mens het n talent. Gebruik dit.

Dit het nie altyd so goed met my gegaan

nie. Toe my eerste man siek geraak het, het

    sit.

Ekhet toebroodjiesmet die laaste brood en

konfyt in my huis gemaak en dit gaan ver-

koop.Met di geld, het ekweer brood gekoop

en die toebroodjies verkoop. Ek is daardie

    rug.

    DESIRE RORKE

Met sy lang hare en tatoer-

    merke is Pierre Rossouw besig

om vinnig die harte van Suid-

    Afrikaners te steel op kykNET

se nuwe reeks Ons Soek Die

    Sanger.

    Dis juis di andersheid wat

    die 26-jarige boorling van Kraai-

    fontein laat aandag trek.

Ek lyk soos n rocker en mense

weet nie wat om te verwag tot ek

    mymond oopmaak en sing nie,s

    hy.

En dis net daar waar alles ver-

    ander, want met sy fluweelstem

het Pierre homself tot in die top-

    vier van di gewilde Afrikaanse

    musiekreeks gesing.

    Eintlik n liedjieskrywer van

formaat, het Pierre al baie nom-

    mer een-treffers vir ander Suid-

    Afrikaanse sangers geskryf.

    Ek het op sesjarige ouderdom

    al betrokke geraak bymusiekmet

    koor en klavierspel,maar het eers

    n skool professioneel begin lied-

    jies skryf, vertel hy.

As ek vir ander sangers skryf,

skryf ek vir hullewat hullewil h,

maar vir myself skryf ek meer

    kontemporr.

Treffers uit Pierre se pen sluit

in Jys die Een van Desmond

Wells, Al s jywat van Zack van

Niekerk en In my drome van

    Cheree.

Pierre se eie unieke klank be-

skryf hy as n mengsel tussen

    Theuns Jordaan en n bietjie

    rock met n boeremusiek-ge-

    voel.

Hy beskryf ook sy lirieke as sto-

ries oor die ouplaashuis of her-

    inneringe uit kinderdae, eerder

    as liefdesliedjies.

    Amper alle Afrikaanse liedjies

draai vandag om die liefde, en als

    wat daarmee gepaard gaan, soos

    teleurstelling, hartseer of n ge-

mis. Dis nie my ding nie.

Hy het met sy eerste oudisie vir

die reeks by GrandWest sy eie

    liedjie Ekskuus Oom gesing,

    waarmee hy dadelik baie aandag

    getrek het.

    Select-musiek, wat nou betrok-

ke is by di reeks, het selfs belang-

    stelling getoon in die liedjie.

Voor die reeks begin het, het

Pierre nooit gedink hy sou self die

    mikrofoon optel nie, todat daar

vir hom ges is hy het moontlik

selfs meer talent as baie van die

    sangers vir wie hy skryf.

    Ek het sulke goeie terugvoe-

ring uit die reeks ontvang dat ek

nou beplan omn die reeksmy eie

album op te neem, s hy.

Die wenner van die reeks sal n

    totale pryspakket van nagenoeg

een mijoen rand ontvang, wat n

    platekontrak by Select-musiek in-

    sluit.

    Die kompetisie. wat oor dertien

    weke uitgesaaiword, het sewewe-

    ke gelede afgeskopmet twingtig fi-

naliste, almal mans tussen 20 en

    40, wat landwyd gekies is.

    Die aanbieder is Lizz Meiring

en die beoordelaars is Annie Ma-

    lan, Brandon October, Niel

    Schoombee en Heidi Edeling.

    Die komende Donderdag sal hy

in n duet saammet Sarah Theron

sy hart moet uitsing om die top-

twee te haal, waarna die eindron-

de op 30 September in Johannes-

    burg gaan plaasvind.

Ons Soek die Sanger word op

    Dinsdae om 17:00, Woensdae om

    13:00, Donderdae om 21:00, Vrydae

om 22:00 en Saterdae om 21:30 uit-

    Renowned South African adventurer Ri-

aan Manser, on behalf of KFCs corpora-

    te social responsibility programme Add

Hope, will consume limited calories whi-

    le cycling thewordhopeacross the face

of the South African map over the next

two months. His cycling odyssey will

highlight both the plight of hunger and

the positive impact that Add Hope is ma-

    king to the countrys children.

Manser took off for his journey from SOS

Childrens Villages in Cape Town on Friday

14 September. He spent time with the child-

ren that are under the centres care, sharing

    breakfast.

Add Hope has had significant involve-

ment with SOS Childrens Villages for the

last four years. The SOS Village is a home

which provides basic needs like food, clo-

thes, comfort and the security so the child-

ren have a sense of structure in order for

them to grow up into responsible adults,

said Yvonne Stigling fund development ma-

    nager, SOS Childrens Villages.

Manser has battled extreme coldwhile cir-

    cumnavigating Iceland and Madagascar in

a kayak, and cycled around Africa through

conflict zones, alone and unaided. Now he

tackles yet another challenge: filling hungry

tummies. Mansers Journey of Hope will

span 4 100 km on a predetermined course

across the country. While this may seem ea-

sy compared with his previous expeditions,

there is a catch: Manser will undertake the

journey on a limited calorie intake.

Im calling on everyone to help me save

a few lives by the end of my journey. I will

be highlighting the issue of hunger and sho-

wing people the impact that Add Hope ma-

kes and continues to make on childrens li-

    ves, says Manser.

Through the use of geo-tracking, this ne-

ver before attempted journey will also be vi-

sible and traceable on satellitemaps for fans

    to track.

Customers and fans can get involved and

    help feed Manser emergency calories

throughout his challenge by tweeting about

the journey and using the hash tag #AddHo-

    pe.

Mansers bike will have a donation collec-

tion vessel fastened to it. People who come

into contact with him along his trip will be

able to contribute their R2 into the box, thus

also increasing his load while he rides.

    The adventurerwill visit variousKFC sto-

res and several other Add Hope partner be-

neficiaries where he will be served the same

    meals as the children.

Im looking forward tomeeting the child-

ren and visitors and uncoveringmany of the

stories of hope that the childrenhave to tell,

    says Manser.

Hunger is a major problem in our count-

ry, and if not addressed proactively will

hamper our ability to sustain the levels of

growth needed to truly eradicate poverty.

We are excited to haveRiaan on board, says

As part of National Heart Awareness

Month, a recipe book has been launched

    byDrVashMungal-Singh,CEOof theHe-

art and Stroke Foundation of SouthAfri-

ca (HSF), as a new tool to disarm South

    Africas heart disease time bomb.

The book titled Cooking from the heart in-

cludes plans for hospitals andpublic institu-

tions to adopt its recipes and healthier ea-

    ting guidelines.

Mungal-Singh says that this new initiati-

ve is the first of its kind.

    Weve launched many initiatives over

the years but never one quite like Cooking

    from the heart, she added.

The unique book contains popular bud-

get-friendly recipes which have been sub-

mitted by ordinary South Africans with a

healthy twist from medical and nutritional

experts by cutting salt, sugar, fat and adding

    a nutritional boost.

    Mariska Fouche, public affairs manager

at Pharma Dynamics, says the book will be

available free of charge to members of the

public who attend free screenings for heart

disease risk factors at shopping centres

across the country during Heart Awareness

    Month.

    Screenings will include blood pressure,

cholesterol and glucose testing and vital in-

    formation about cardiovascular disease,

    Fouche said.

Fouche says that not only will Cooking

from the heart help home cooks to produce

more nutritiousmeals, it is also an excellent

    practical resource for healthcare practitio-

    ners.

The book, which is available free of char-

ge to all members of the public can be down-

    loaded from www.cookingfromthehe-

    art.co.za, the mobi site www.heartreci-

pes.mobi or visit the nearest Clicks Clinic

to pick up one of 57 000 copies.

A complete list of free screening dates and

locations can be obtained from Amina Ha-

bib at the Heart and Stroke Foundation on

    021 403 6540 or visit www.heartfoundati-

The Santa Shoebox Project kicks off 1 Septem-

ber marking the launch of this years heart-

warming drive to collect gifts for thousands

    of children.

This non-profit organisation has been col-

lecting Santa Shoeboxes at Christmas time

for thousands of children from vulnerable so-

cial backgrounds and this year the target is

    100 000 children.

These will be dispatched to more than 900

childrens homes, orphanages and other child

    care institutions across the country.

With share the joyof giving as the essence

of the project, the Santa Shoebox Project of-

fers people the chance to participate. Parents

are encouraged to involve their own children

in the process by selecting a name of a specific

child from the selection list on the website,

whomaynever have received a gift forChrist-

mas. Gift boxes may then be chosen and filled

according to the guidelines provided, with ne-

cessities such as toothpaste and a toothbrush,

face cloth and soap as well as sweets, educa-

tional supplies, a toy and an item of clothing.
