rown-ups have now taken to accompa-

    nying children selling cookies before

sunrise and after sunset in heavy traf-

fic, as reported on by TygerBurger over the

    last few weeks.

    This comes after various organisations

concerned over the welfare of these chil-

dren voiced their strong disapproval of the

practice whereby the children sell the cook-

ies on behalf of the production arm of their

church, the Ambassadors for Christ World

Outreach Ministries (AFC) in Elsies River.

The children are known to sell at different

spots at busy intersections in Bellville, Par-

ow and Goodwood. At least four of the chil-

dren go to John Ramsay Secondary School.

    Falling asleep in class

The principal of this school, Roshin Ram-

awoothar, voiced his concern over reports

    from the learners teachers complaining

that the learners fall asleep in class. (TB, 9

    March, Cookie kids in danger)

This is a likely consequence of the chil-

dren, who live on the church premises with

the permission of their parents, selling the

cookies before andafter school, well into the

evening. TygerBurger reported on this in

our first article on 24 February headlined

Cookie sale concern. The children inter-

viewed were between 14 and 17 years old.

A roll-on effect was created after our first

article on the plight of the children, when

TygerBurger received a message from He-

witt de Jager, a youth counsellor and chair-

man of Hewlin Compassion, a street chil-

    drens forum in Kraaifontein.

I spoke to a 15-year-old girl dressed inher

    school uniform (lastWednesday) onmyway

to work, he said. She says that shes will-

    ingly volunteering every morning before

going to school and that she doesnt get any-

thing out of it. This sounded very well re-

hearsed to me as if others had inquired

about the situation already, he said.

    Not above board

De Jager questioned the legality of the sit-

uation, and forwarded his concerns to the

social welfare arm of the Voortrekker Road

    Corridor City Improvement District

(VRCID), with Wilma Piek at its head.

Piek in turn forwarded the VRCIDs and

De Jagers concerns to the City of Cape

Town, stating the following, among other

concerns: It does seem that something is

not above board here and of course, it is to-

    tally unacceptable that children should

have to sell cookies at busy intersections to

    earn a place to stay.

    Theoffice of SuzetteLittle, theCitysMay-

comember for social development and early

    childhood development, then escalated the

matter. Her own response was as follows:

The Western Cape Department of Social

Development is responsible for matters re-

lating to child welfare and would be best

placed to investigate and establish the chil-

drens circumstances. We have referred the

matter to the provincial department for in-

vestigation. In terms of the sale of the goods

at intersections, I have liaisedwith our Law

Enforcement department, who will be serv-

ing a compliance notice on the pastor of the

church that the children selling the cookies

    are linked to, she said.

On Thursdaymorning last week, a senior

    TygerBurger reporter spotted an adult

womanandmanlooking to be in their 30s,

at one of the locations the children sell from

at Plattekloof Road, as well as on Monday.

V Do our readers think this will be the end of the

childrens sales? Let us know at briewe@tygerbur-

A group of workers within the Tygerberg

Nature Reserve have come under the spot-

light over complaints of noise in the reserve

    while they remove alien plantation.

During our daily social media scouring,

    TygerBurger cameacross residentswho live

    in the adjoining Loevenstein complaining

    about the workers big voices.

One resident is quoted as saying: There

are a lot of people looking for alien plants.

And the women have got nice big voices

which could be used in (conductor Andr)

Rieus choirs. Unfortunately they do not

sing, but they make conversation up and

down the hill facing Mahogany Crescent,

    the resident said.

It is amazing how far the voices travel.

Only one question: Is this okay in a nature

    reserve? the resident said.

She was referring to regulations in other

    reserves where visitors were advised

against using car radios or playing music.

If so, someone has to teach visitors and

contract workers. They might not know.

    Some feedbackwasgivenon the residents

post, including that the women are work-

ing, removing alien plants so that the rest

of us can appreciate the nature reserve.

This was from another resident: They

are working outside in relentless sun, but

can still have a cheerful conversation. Rath-

er rejoice in the fact that they are happy to

enjoy doing something that will ultimately

add value to your life and not theirs.

The City was approached for an opinion

on the matter, and area manager Penelope

Glanville gave a succinct one-liner re-

sponse: Alien clearing contract staff are

currently working in a portion of the Tyger-

berg Nature Reserve, clearing the alien

plants. We were not aware that they were

singing or disturbing the residents and will

    ask them not to sing.

he conflict between the rights of drug

users to clean equipment, and those of

    the broader Bellville community to

not be exposed to drug paraphernalia and

open drug use, will not level out soon.

This comes after yet another reader has

asked TygerBurger to investigate the legiti-

macy of drug users openly shooting up and

leaving used needles behind, and the orga-

nisation that supplies this equipment as

part of their harm reduction programme.

    Resident Tomislav Milakovic sent Tyger-

Burger pictures of a drug user injecting

himself in broad daylight in the middle of

a residential street. Some of the pictures,

    which he obtained from theOakdaleWatch,

also show packs of unused syringes that

were picked up by patrollers, and used syr-

inges that were picked up in various parks

    around Oakdale.

How is there any control? Milakovic

asked in an open letter to Step Up, the orga-

    nisationbackedby local andprovincial gov-

ernment to service drug users with essen-

    tials to ensure harm reduction.

Step Up, you say what you do, will pre-

vent disease. Nonsense. You are handing

out clean needles, yes, but theywill get used

on our doorsteps, streets, parks and church-

es. These needles are now dirty and in fact

increase the potential spread of disease,

    Milakovic wrote.

Yes, your intentions are noble, but your

    end result is flawed.

You do your charity bit during the day

over here in Bellville then go home to sleep

in your comfortable bed, believing you are

making a better world, whilst myself and

others, here in the trenches, are left with

the task of day and night trying to keep our

    streets clean for our children.

You have helped entice more drug users

into Bellville and surrounds, inclusive of

    Boston, he said.

Other concerns raised included a lack of

support structure for the users, no place to

    sleep or proper ablution facilities.

Put yourselves in our shoes. We are un-

    derstaffed and overwhelmed as operating

    neighbourhood watches, sinking in the

cesspool you are, in fact, feeding, he said.

Step Up do us all a favour: step down!

    Shaun Shelly, advocacy and psycho-so-

cial coordinator at TB/HIV Care Associa-

tion, the parent organisation of Step Up, re-

    sponded to Milakovics letter.

Shelly is currently at a United Nations

summit in Vienna. According to a paper re-

leased at the summit, substantial reduc-

tions in new HIV infections were noted

where needle and syringe programmes and

    opioid substitution therapy were applied,

showed a reduction in HIV infections.

According to the paper, continuing their

    services would contribute towards ending

Aids as a threat to public health by 2030.

In addition, needle and syringe pro-

grammes have repeatedly been shown to

not increase drug use or injecting, to not di-

minish motivation for reducing drug use,

but to assist injecting drug users in access-

ing life-saving medical and other services,

including treatment for substance use dis-

    orders, Shelly said.

The consequences of not supplying ster-

ile injecting equipment can result in signifi-

    cant harms.

Shelly said by curbing the rapid spread

    ofHIV through their programme, theywere

    indeed protecting the broader communi-

    ty.

I cannot consider suggestions of quar-

antining people as thiswould be a violation

of numerous laws and basic human rights.

Statements on the aggressive nature of the

drug users and morality demonstrate a

significant misconception of drug use and

the challenges that face drug users.

He added that the accusation of having

attracted drug users is absolutely unfound-

ed, citing that a rigorous scientific proc-

ess was followed to identify areas where in-

jecting drug users were already present,

and while the number of drug users may be

increasing, this is due to multiple and com-

plex factors unrelated to the provision of

    our services.

Shelly said no cases of HIV infection have

ever been reported from needle-stick inju-

    ries from disposed needles.

He added they were already doing twice-

weekly clean-ups, calling for the public to

email them the locations where discarded

needles are found and having consultations

with local civic and law enforcement agen-

cies to help identify such locations.

They were also encouraging users to dis-

    pose of injecting equipment responsibly.

V Contact [email protected] to report loca-

tions where used drug-use equipment is found.

    Radio hams brave air, seawaves

    ESM ERASMUS

    @erasmusesme

    A

bout 150 000 radio hams across the

world have been waiting for the day to

tick off Heard Island in the Southern

Indian Ocean about 4 000 kilometres south

    west ofwesternAustralia in their logbooks

of entities they contacted via radio. The ra-

dio hams call this a DXpedition.

Now, 20 years after the previous DXpedi-

tion in 1996, another DXpedition departed

from Table Bay harbour on 10 March for a

rough trip on a vessel, aptly named Brave-

heart, to the remote and uninhabited Heard

    island.

In Durbanville, an excited 87-year-old Den-

nis Wells will keep a close eye on the DXpedi-

tion from his shack at his home in The Pad-

docks. Even thoughhe ticked off Heard Island

more than 30 years ago (on 20 October 1985

when an Australian national Antarctic re-

search expedition team visited the island), he

shares the excitement of the other radio

    hams.

Wind, snow, rain ... and a volcano

DXpeditions are undertaken to remote des-

tinations to help radio hams all around the

world to be able to make contact.

It is also 20 years since any man put foot

onHeard Island, known for its adverse con-

ditions of wind, snow and rain. It also has

    an active volcano.

The Braveheart, which is chartered by

radio amateurs, was expected to arrive yes-

terday (Tuesday 22March) and, since there

is no jetty, all equipment would have to be

taken on land by rubber ducks.

    ThisDXpedition,which is calledVKEK

and costs aboutR7million, is led byDrRob-

ert Schmieder from the USA, the same

team leader of the previous DXpedition in

    1996.

Schmieder, a world authority on Heard

Island and many other islands around the

world, is the author of many books on the

    subject.

Wells is part of the SouthAfrican support

team, which is led by Paul Johnson from

    Green Point.

Several radio amateurs will qualify for

Honour Roll and #1Honour Roll when they

    manage tomake contactwithHeard Island.

Wells, a legend in the radio amateur

world and well-known by his call ZS1AU,

has earned the very prestigious DXCC Top

of Honour Roll plaque in 2014 the highest

obtainable in amateur radio, and placing

him at number one in the world of DX. It

can take anything from 20 years to a life-

    time to achieve this.

Wells was invited to accompany the

Braveheart on a yacht out of Table Bayhar-

bour. Oh, it takes so long to say goodbye

to a ship and the Braveheart was no excep-

tion. The trip on the yacht to accompany

Braveheart on its way was fantastic. When

we were near Robben Island, we called

Braveheart on our radio and the ship came

to a stop. We took some magnificent photos

with Table Mountain in the background.

Braveheart crew to stay for three weeks

Once again I felt proud of our city as it

was the most beautiful sight with the table

cloth coming over the top, Wells said.

As the ship tracked its way across the

stormy southern Indian Ocean from Cape

Town to Heard Island, the participants and

the crew of Braveheart launched a string of

oceanographic buoys in support of climate

research by three of the worlds leading sci-

    entific organisations, the Woods Hole

    Oceanographic Institute (WHOI), the Na-

    tional Oceanographic and Atmospheric Ad-

ministration (NOAA) and the Scripps Insti-

    tute of Oceanography.

In addition to the Argo buoys, they also

launched a group of global drifting buoys

in behalf of NOAA and possibly the South

    African Weather Service.

    The 1250 satellite tracked driftersworld-

wide remain on the surface during their ap-

    proximately four-year lifespan, continuous-

ly reporting on their location as well as cur-

    rents, sea surface temperature, atmospheric

    pressure, winds and salinity.

    This VKEK DXpedition, comprising of

14 amateur radio operators and scientists,

will remain on Heard Island for three weeks

doing other scientific work, as well as ama-

    teur radio.

They plan to reach parts of the island by

flying a drone with an HD camera and will

be the first to land on and take off from wa-

ter. The photos will be relayed to the ground

station, as well as via satellite.

V Visit the website http://vk0ek.org/ for an ongoing

report of the DXpedition for the next three weeks.

Here with Dennis Wells (front right) are (in front left) Dirk Lotz from Bloubergstrand and (back

from left) Andr Fransman from Bellville, Martin van Rensburg from Parow and Matt Greyven-

    he police cannot always immediately

respond to each and every complaint

    they receive.

This is themessage from Lieutenant Kev-

inWilliams, police spokesperson of the Par-

    ow Police Station.

According to Williams they are constant-

ly criticised for not reacting fast enough.

We do the best we can with limited re-

sources, so it is important the residents

know how we react to a complaint, says

    Williams.

According to Williams reaction time is

the amount of time it takes to respond to a

particular complaint. The time is calculat-

ed from themoment the complaint has been

received and the time it takes to attend that

specific complaint. Every complaint that is

received at the police station is treated as

important and will be attended to. The po-

lice have a system categorising complaints

    between alfa and bravo complaints.

Alfa complaints are themost serious and

may demand immediate response to ensure

the protection of life and property. Com-

plaints pertaining to rape, house robberies,

    carjacking, truck hijacking and cash-in-

    transit robberies demand immediate re-

sponse to ensure that life be preserved and

property is safe guarded, says Williams.

    All bravo complaints, although impor-

tant to the police, are not life threatening

and may not warrant immediate response

when a serious complaint calls for swift po-

lice action. We desire to attend to all com-

plaints of any person irrespective the na-

    ture of that particular complaint.

he vigilance of employees of a security

company led to the arrest of three sus-

pects suspected of belonging to a

break-in syndicate operating in the north-

    ern suburbs.

The security officers noticed a suspicious

white Volkswagen Golf at a security com-

    plex inTableView.When they investigated,

a chase ensued after the car fled the scene.

    According to Warrant Officer Jacques

Mostert, the vehicle was chased to Bothasig

    whileDurbanville police assistedbyclosing

off the escape route towards them.

    They were finally cornered in

    the Atlas Park industrial area

and three suspects in their thir-

    ties from Khayelitsha, Nyanga

    and Gugulethu were arrested

    when various items were found

    inside the vehicle, says Mostert.

    The items included two flat

screen televisions, a fan and vari-

    ous expensive shoes, clothing and

    toiletries. A complainant from

West Beach Table View has been

    located after an intensive investi-

gation and has identified some of

    the property, including the one

    flat screen television which has

    been taken during a burglary.

    Three crowbars were also found

    inside the vehicle, says Mostert.

    The police thought the investi-

gation was done and dusted until

they had a closer look at the num-

    ber plates.

    They found that the number

plates were covered by fake ones.

    Further investigation was

done and found that the false

number plates were used on a

Constable Zukisa Mantewu with some of the property

    found inside the VW Golf.

    Crowbar thieves

    caught in car chase

Mercedes-Benz which was involved in a

house robbery in Bellville. The vehicle has

also been noticed on other crime scenes in

    Brackenfell and Kirstenhof.

All three suspects were charged and will

appear in court. One of the suspects iswant-

ed on two cases of housebreak-in in Bothas-

ig and a case of theft in Fish Hoek, accord-

    ing to Mostert.

    Bothasig station commander Lieutenant

Patrick Jacobs commended the two arrest-

    ing officers, Constables Andrew Simmers

and Zukisa Mantewu, on their good work,

but also thanked all the security companies

    andmembers of other stationswhowere in-

    volved in the successful apprehension.

    he Omuramba MyCiTi station was

converted into a delivery room when

staff rallied to assist a mom in labour.

According to a statement by the City of

Cape Town, it was just after 13:00 on Mon-

    day 14Marchwhen XolaniStofile, aMyCiTi

    station manager with first-aid experience,

was visiting personnel at the Omuramba

    station.

He noticed the pregnant woman waiting

at the door to the ladies bathroom, which

was occupied at that stage. She seemed to

be in pain and then her water broke unex-

    pectedly.

Xolani step-ped up like a professional

    mid-husband, removing her stockings just

in time and making her comfortable as she

was giving birth to a beautiful and healthy

baby boy, says Mayco member for trans-

    port, Brett Herron.

As the dramatic scene unfolded, MyCiTi

personnel evacuated the front endof the sta-

tion to give the mother and child some pri-

    vacy.

Luckily the station was not busy at the

    time.

The personnel sent for an ambulance

who took the 31-year-old mother and new-

born child to the Somerset Hospital. The fa-

ther told us that he was extremely grateful

to Xolani and all of those who assisted his

wife and boy, who they have named Gilbert

    Gabriel.

Gilbert and his mother have been dis-

charged from hospital and are now back at

    home in Joe Slovo.

We are extremely proud of Xolani who

stepped up and assisted the mother during

this difficult time. Hemay want to consider

ing at the Bellville Library soon.

The exhibition will curate and celebrate

the existing stories at play within the Bell-

ville region. It features 12 local artists, with

each one having captured their daily prac-

    tices with a disposable camera.

While the camera might be disposable,

the underlying stories in Bellville spaces

are most certainly not, as the exhibition

    shows.

The outcome of this creative venture re-

    veals spaces, faces andpracticeswhichhave

become so interwoven into Bellville culture

that they are almost second nature.

However, the pause for reflection quickly

brings these elements to life, reminding res-

idents that they are the very things that

make this city the Bellville and home to

    many that it is.

The exhibition opens on Wednesday 30

March and runs until Saturday 2 April at

the Art.b gallery at the library.

I had the opportunity to assist

my mom to receive her card

    when Sassa switched to the

card system. At a certain point

    an official requested my mom

to sign a form. I could see that

it was a type of bank order

    form. No entries were made.

So my mom were asked to sign

    a blank form.

    I alerted the official about

this. The reply was that he/she

    was just following orders.

    We know that our elderly

Oom

kerkklok en ek was vas oortuig hy slaap

in die kerktoring, want hy was altyd net

dr. Hyt ons geskel as ons voete gesleep

    het Sondagskoolklas toe.

Ekt gewonder hoe hy gaan skel sonder

n tong. Want oom Koster gaan gesond

word en terugkom die hele gemeente

    het immers vir hom gebid.

Kanker was destyds soos n tienerswan-

    gerskap of egskeiding. Niemand het

daaroor gepraat of geskinder nie. Gewon-

der dalk, maar nie geprt nie.

Ons het oom Koster nooit weer gesien

    nie.

Twintig jaar later was dit my pa se

    beurt om die

    Groot K in die o

    te staar.

    Die dag toe hy

    nie meer sy

    Sudoku-raaisel kon

    invul nie, was die

    dag dat ek geweet

    het dis tyd om

    vrede te maak en

    koebaai te s.

    Wr het die

    kerk en my ma-hul-

    le gebid dat die

    Liewe Vader hom

    moet spaar. Ekt

    moet sterf.

Van die familie het my uitgekryt as n

ongelowige.

my opgevreet ... net di wat in n Calvi-

nistiese huis grootgeword het, sal regtig

verstaan.

rou oor my pa.

dood. My broers en my ma was gebroke.

Want solank daar hoop is,

    ongenaakbare siekte.

Ek weet daar is verhale van hoop, van

mense wat kanker oorwin het. Dit bied n

    mate van troos.

Al wat n mens kan hoop, is dat

daardie beker by jou verby sal gaan.

    van jou huis af stap!

    Tweedens wil ek aanbeveel

    dat besoekers aan die hospitaal

    druk uitoefen op die hospitaal

    om meer parkeerplekke te bou.

Daar is n paar jaar gelede

    miljoene rande se verbeteringe

    aangebring, soms ten koste van

    pasinte. Maar die gebrek aan

    parkeerplek is steeds nie

    aangespreek nie.

    Derdens wil ek graag weet

wat word van die geld wat so

    gen word van motoriste (soms

    ouer mense) wat geen ander

keuse het as om so te parkeer

    nie.

    Laastens wens ek daar was

    meer spietkops op motorfietse

soos in die verlede. Die taxis

stop en ry en kruis witstrepe

net waar en hoe hulle wil en

motoriste gee maar toe, want jy

wil nie in n ongeluk betrokke

raak nie veral nie met n taxi

nie en veral as daar nie n

beampte in sig is nie. Nee, hulle

kies die maklike weg om eerder

    verkeerskaartjies uit te skryf.

    So, mense, wees gewaarsku:

hou jou R500 liewers in jou sak

    en moenie die beamptes die

    genoegdoening gee om n pienke

    uit te skryf nie.

    Kan jy dit

    oorvertel?

    embrace and assist these

    students?

    These children are prepared

to sacrifice just for one (may be

    the only one) cooked meal.

    It is about survival taking

    cognisance of the other partys

    exploitation. Have we taken a

step to ask them why they do

it, and cant they be assisted in

    any manner?

    We have criminalised some-

thing good, before it has even

    turned bad. We are teaching

    this generation also to depend

on the State, and not take

    charge of their own lives.

    I would propose that the

    schools create an enabling

    environment for these learners,

    for example:

    . During interval these

    students have a table where

they can sell their produce (put

    systems in place).

    . The business teacher teach

and create the platform for the

    children to diversify in their

    produce, add value, and keep-

    ing records that get checked.

This brings along a sense of

    responsibility.

    . Consider incentives to

    these students if your school-

work is up to standard for a

    quarter, you can continue

    selling the next quarter.

As teachers, we are not only

    the caretakers of those students

when they are at school, but we

are also privileged to help them

acquire a better future than we

    had.

    Let us rather take hands,

    help each other become better,

    and create a better South

    Africa.

    eer as n miljoen Suid-Afrikaners

tussen die ouderdomme van 20 en

50 word geraak deur volwasse aan-

    daggebrek-hiperaktiwiteitsversteuring

    (ADHD).

Dt is onthul in navorsing deur dr. Rena-

ta Schoeman, n psigiater en die top-MBA-

student vir 2015 aan die Universiteit Stel-

    lenbosch Bestuurskool (USB). Vir haar

MBA-tesis het Schoeman die huidige situa-

sie in Suid-Afrika ontleed deur spesifiek te

    fokus opdie psigiatriese bestuur enbefond-

sing van behandeling vir volwassenes met

    ADHD in die privaat sektor.

Schoeman s: Die erkenning van vol-

wasse ADHD as n chroniese siekte wat be-

handeling benodig, is krities. Tog het vol-

    wassenes met

    ADHDbeperkte

    toegang tot be-

    handeling, selfs

    diegene in die

    privaat gesond-

    heidsorgstelsel.

    Dis omdat

    mediese ske-

    mas wat ADHD

    by kinders dek,

    dikwels nie

    voordele of be-

    handeling vir

    volwassenes

    voorsien nie.

    Schoeman s

    pasinte sukkel

    om privaat be-

    handeling bo en

    behalwe die koste vanhulmaandelikseme-

diese bydraes by te bring, en juis daarom

    bly die siekte dikwels onbehandeld.

Dis n duur, kroniese siekte met aan-

sienlike impak op die lewensgehalte van

pasinte en hul families. Die koste direk,

indirek en ontasbaar is aansienlik, met

    die aangepaste lewensjare vir gestremd-

heid bereken op 424 uit 100 000, wat n aan-

    sienlike afname in werkverrigting is.

Schoeman se MBA-studie het die gebrek

aan kennis en finansile ondersteuning vir

    ADHD gedentifiseer as die vernaamste

    struikelblokke ombehandeling vir en diag-

nose van die siekte te verkry. Sy stel n nu-

    we befondsingsmodel vir privaat gesond-

heidsorg as n moontlike oplossing voor.

    Volwassenes met ADHD ervaar steeds

skeptisisme van diegene rondom hulle wat

    aangevuurworddeurvolgehoue enoninge-

Sy s omdat so baie

volwassenes met ADHD vir die grootste

    deel vanhul lewe sonderbehandelinggaan,

dwelmmisbruik. In die werkplek kan hul

    swak tydsbestuur endoelwitstelling n aan-

sienlike impak op hul werknemers h.

ADHD word gekenmerk deur kwaai en

    beperkende vlakke van onoplettendheid,

    hiperaktiwiteit en impulsiwiteit.

    As n sogenaamde ontwikkelingsiekte

word simptome reeds in die kinderjare dui-

delik. Hoewel sommige kinders hul ADHD

    luisteraars, swak organiseerders, aandag-

Haar voorstel vir n be-

    fondsingsmodel wat vertroulik ontwikkel

is vir die privaat mediese skema betrokke

in haar navorsing sal grootliks bydra tot

begrip vir die langtermynbehoeftes en die

verbetering van toegang tot diagnose enbe-

    handeling vir volwassenes met ADHD.

verlede week die foon optel ommet

een van Suid-Afrika se voorste spirituele

mediums te gesels oor haar beplande toer

    na Kaapstad.

Shannon Walbran help mense deur per-

soonlike boodskappe van hul engele te in-

terpreteer en oor te dra. Vir n verandering

moes ek stilbly, ophou vrae vra en net luis-

ter ... myself ast ware oopstel en bietjie

kwesbaar maak. In my geval, s Shannon,

kommunikeer engele beslis met my deur

bring. Dit sal jou lank bybly en inspireer.

Dis nie toevallig nie. As dit gebeur skryf

nie, is dat elke denkbare gaatjie teen my

kantoormuur reeds toegeplak is onder die

papiertjies met woorde, sinne en gedigte

wat gereeld uitspring na my en gereeld

    stof tot nadenke bied.

Toevallig? Miskien, miskien nie. My en-

n vrees wat al jare lank by my spook. Kan

sy my vrese oor die foon aanvoel?

en angssnellers in jou lewe so goumoontlik

My engele is so spesifiek dat hulle my

selfs aanraai om karateklasse te begin

    neem.

Ek wonder of dit nie n

    slim hemelse plan is om

    my tedwingomvanmyon-

    derdrukte, dog gekoester-

    de toorn, ontslae te raak

    nie?

Wees stil en weet dat ek

God is, dra sy dadelik nog

    n boodskap oor.

    God probeer vir jou s

dat jy nie in beheer is nie.

    Jy probeer alles self doen.

Vra My vir hulp as jy dit

nodig het, s God vir jou.

Sit My aan die stuur van

    jou lewe.

    Sjoe.

Teen di tyd het ek die

    trant van my artikel ge-

heel en al verloor, en stil-

    weg gewonder wat ek nou

    eintlik gaan skryf as di

    onderhoud verby is.

    Shannon s die bood-

    skappe wat engele oordra,

    is meestal lewensverande-

    rend.

    Dis geensins lukraak

    nie, maar baie spesifiek

    met die doel om positiewe

    verandering mee te

    bring, s sy.

    Daarom moedig sy haar

    klinte en seminaargan-

    gers aan om spesifieke

vrae te vra oor kwessies in

    hul lewens.

    Jy sal verbaas wees oor

    nie.

Sy verduidelik dit as volg. As God by-

voorbeeld vergelyk kan word aan die Koe-

berg-kragstasie, sou die engele die infra-

struktuur wees wat die energie aan die

    eindverbruiker lewer.

In my eie lewe het hulle my al baie ge-

    help en groot veranderinge teweeggebring.

Ek moes net luister, s sy.

    Volgens Shannon kommunikeer engele

    maak.

    Seminaargangers sal ookdie geleentheid

702/Cape Talk, s haar woordvoerder, Me-

    lissa Conradie.

Sy het grootgeword in n Rooms-Katolie-

    ke huishouding en het later

    jare haar geloof versterk

    deur verdere studies in Ju-

    dasme, Boeddhisme en

    Shamanisme. Sy het tydens

    haar 20s en 30s meer as 40

    lande besoek en tydens 2003

    die roeping gekry om ander

    te help met di gawe.

    Sy het sedert 2003 al

meer as 20 000 mense gehelp

en is ook die skrywer van

    die boek Guided! wat jou

leer hoe om met jou engele

    te kommunikeer, s Conra-

    die.

    Geloof in die bonatuurli-

    ke en geloofsoortuiging is

    myns insiens n persoonlike

    saak, maar het Shannonmy

    gehelp? Beslis, ja.

    Of di boodskappe nou di-

rek van my engele af gekom

het, sou ek nie kon s nie,

maar een ding is seker: alles

wat sy vir my ges het, het

ek lankal reeds in my bin-

    neste vermoed of selfs ge-

    weet.

Is wat sy doen dus net n

    geval van slim sielkunde

    waardeurmy gedagtes bloot

    gelees word, of was dit

    waarlik n geestelike onder-

    vinding?

    Die woorde van Jesus

    kom bymy op: Die konink-

ryk van God is binne-in jul-

le. Maar so ook die miste-

    rieuse teorie van die psigia-

ter Carl Jung toe hy ges het

    God is die werklikheid

    self.

The Metro Evangelical Services (MES) in

Bellville has had quite a number of mile-

    stones during the past year.

So says MES manager, Ilse Els, of the 715

intake assessments theyve done, the 9168

    job rehabilitation opportunities benefiting

417 clients in their God Restores Our World

(Grow) programme and the 304 clients who

    attended their workshops.

Ilse says added to this, they had 23 clients

    who completed

    their foreman

    training in the

    Grow pro-

    gramme, 47 cli-

    ents who were

    assisted with

    job placement,

    48 families that

    were reunited

    and 10 families

    where re-inte-

    gration was

    successful.

    They also had

    17 clients who

    used their ac-

    commodation

    programme.

    With March being World Nutrition

Month, we celebrate 8950 meals that were

served at the MES canteen, of which 4464

were paid for by meal vouchers.

This means our local communities are

steadily buying into the strategy to give re-

    sponsibly, she adds.

    Because of the programme labelled

    his years Slave Route Chal-

lenge on Sunday 8 May will see

    participants run the usual scenic

route through the city while also

    giving honour to individual slaves

    of the Capes past.

Each runner will carry one of

the 8 000 names of slaves who ap-

pear on a column of memory at

the Iziko Slave Lodge in the city

    centre.

    This was announced at the

launch of this years edition of the

race at the museum last week.

    Farouk Meyer of Itheko Sport

    Athletic Club and organiser for

    the Slave Route Challenge ex-

plains runners will have a specific

purpose and a special honour in

this years race, referring to the

    column ofmemory onwhich the

names of 8 000 men, women and

    children are inscribed.

    This year, every person who

registers will run on behalf of one

of these names on the column, al-

lowing each runner to honour a

    specific personwhowas an impor-

tant part of our countrys past.

    More than a race

    Organisers say the Slave Route

Challenge ismore than just a race:

it is a tribute to the trials of dispos-

    sessed people who contributed to

    the early development of Cape

Town and, as a result, South Afri-

    ca.

    The race route takes runners

    past several historically signifi-

cant landmarks, such as theCastle ofGood

Hope, Grand Parade, the Whipping Post,

Old Slave Church, the Iziko Slave Lodge

    and the Slave Tree Plaque.

Today the Iziko Slave Lodge is a site of

memory a place of reconciliation and

    hope. The Slave Route Challenge

    provides the runners the opportu-

nity to actively engage with this

history and beyond the race to ex-

    plore, discover, reflect and recon-

nect with their roots, says Paul

    Tichmann, curator of the Iziko

    Slave Lodge.

Meyer says this years race aims

    to honour individuals and cele-

brate the collective history and di-

versity of both the race entrants

and the people they are remember-

    ing.

This takes the race to a whole

new level, and personalises it for

each runner, while at the same

time instilling a sense of unity and

    meaning something so critical at

this point in time for our country,

    says Meyer.

    5km to half marathon

The event is presented by Itheko

Sport Athletic Club under the aus-

    pices of Western Province Athlet-

ics. While there is a minor change

in the title and logo of the race this

year, it still forms part of Metro-

    politan Lifes mojo series which

    celebrates the community, and

    Metropolitan Life remains the

    main sponsor.

Since the inaugural race in 2011,

    the annual Slave Route Challenge

has consisted of a half marathon

    and a 10km run, as well as a 5km

fun run and walk, and a 10km big

walk for those who prefer a more

    leisurely pace. The half marathon

is scheduled to kick things off at

    the startingpoint inDarlingStreet

at 07:00, followed by the 10km run

at 07:15, the 5km fun run and walk at 07:30

and the 10km big walk at 07:45.

    V To enter visit www.iamrunningfor.co.za.

Each of this years participants in the Slave Route Challenge

will be running for one of the 8000 names of slaves found on

the column of memory on display at the Iziko Slave Lodge.
