A mobile wellness clinic for injectingdrug users (IDUs) in Tielman MaraisPark in Bosbell has residents worried

that this could lead to an increase in crime. Some insist the clinic should leave the area. But, says SisterCatherineWilliams, a pro-

Now they pick up all the needles twice aweek, but also encourage users to bringtheir used needles to them so that it can beincinerated.Although the clinic is still a pilot project,

harm reduction is not a new model, but itis a model that has proven to be successfulglobally, Williams says.“Weknow that in places like Russiawhere

they refuse to take on the harm reductionparadigm, they are sitting with HIV rates of90% and above (in the IDU communities). Incertain towns in the UK they have kept itdown to less than 1%where harm reductionis in place.”Williams says many perceptions exist

about IDUs.“Although we think they are separate to

us, the mainstream society, they are actual-ly not. They are sons, daughters, brothers, wives ... they are not not us. There is no in-visible barrier between people who are lowrisk of HIV and people who are high risk.Clients of sex workers come from main-

stream society and they then infect wives –their families. TB is an airborne illness, itis a very serious problem for all of us.”Another perception is that drug addicts

are criminals per se.“The drug user makes a very convenient

scape goat for crime. We have never felt un-safe with our service beneficiaries here.”She says heroine users generally want to

be left alone.

“They just want to nod off and forget abouttheir tragic lives. There is a perception thatthere is a lack of control, but while youmightwant to get out of your situation for a while, that does not make you not a moral person. In fact, there is an incredible sense of caretak-ing in this community,” she says.Every single day, Williams says, someone

desperately asks her for help to rehabilitate.“For many people the use of drugs started

when they were very young. It was an inade-quate coping mechanism then. We mightthink drugs are the cause of the problem, where in fact formost people life before drugswas pretty bad and they had very few suppor-tive structures due to family dysfunction, trauma or living in a violent environment.“So these people need to develop coping

skills and that level of psycho social supportis simply not available.”There are some who support this project.

One of them is the VRCID, who says they areprepared to work with them.“We support this project, because it comes

from a health perspective,” says Wilma Piek, social development manager at the VRCID.“We canpretend that the drug problemdoes

not exist, but in reality it does and in realitycontaminated needles are primarily spread-ing diseases and infections.“TB and HIV are prevented with clean nee-

dles, and by providing it, a relationship canbe built with individuals that might lead torehabilitation.”

She says there are a num-ber of rehabilitation pro-grammes, but long waitinglists and a lack of resourcesmake it very difficult to getan addict enrolled – especial-ly if they are homeless.Piek says according to

their records, the use of hero-ine has not increased in Tiel-man Marais Park since theStep Up project started herein June.“There is a general in-

crease in drug use, but not be-cause of the clinic. We seemore people in ElizabethPark at the moment, but thatis because the homeless keepgetting chased from thestreets and they end up here.In that park we also see acriminal element who makesan income from addicts.”Piek says because of com-

plaints from the communitythe clinic will move to anoth-er park as soon an alternative is found.“We understand the concerns from the

Bosbell community. Crimeoften goeshandin hand with drug use, because the userwill do anything to get money to sustainthe habit. This is another reason why wesupport the clinic.

“Hopefully the resources to provide freemedical therapy for rehabilitation will befound,” says Piek.V Look out for next week’s TygerBurger where we givean in depth look at the possible programmes andprojects available for drug addicts and the homelessand where you can make a difference.pp y

A bottle that was broken over the head ofa bar owner during an argument, led toaround 30 shots fired outside his establish-ment, one man dead and another seriouslywounded.According to Colonel Neville de Beer of

the Parow police, the altercation that hap-pened inside the bar led to a bloody free-for-all shooting outside Renegades bar after

midnight on 5 October. He says the police believe about five pis-

tol-bearing men took part in the shooting. The bar – at 34 Connaught Road – is more

commonly known as “Renegades bikersbar, home of the white line riders”, but ac-cording toDeBeer reports that the shootingwas gang-related are mere allegations atthis stage. He says details around the inci-dent are very sketchy, “because no-onewants to talk to us”.No arrests have been made yet.

@erasmusesme

Ter viering van die 25ste herdenking vanInternasionale Dag vir Ouer Persone, het Badisa vanjaar verskeie projekte

met senior inwoners gehou.Projekte is by Badisa-tehuise en -dienssen-

Besoek www.badisa.org.za virmeer inligting.

I refer to the letter by RonelButton (“What can we do tohelp”, TB, 7 October). How is itpossible that Ronel “could nothave comprehended thedifficulties and sadness” linkedto poverty? Where have youbeen all your life – sitting inyour clean house with yourbelly full?

Poverty is all around us. Youdon’t have to go visit someonein a shack to know howterribly sad it is and only thenrealise these people need help. It’s always been there andalways will be. I agree it is sadto look into the eyes of ahungry child and these chil-dren I will gladly help. Theirmothers I don’t really havesympathy for. Why on earthwould someone who lives in ashack insist on having childrenwhen you know you can’tprovide for them?

I am not rich but I do have ajob, a clean house and food onmy table. I would love to havea child but I know I can notafford to do so. Birth control isfree. Make use of it, then therewon’t be children in need!

ANONYMOUSGoodwood

Why have kidsif you are poor?

I went to collect my ID cardfrom the department of homeaffairs, Boston Centre, inBellville yesterday. I stood inthe shorter collections queue. The applications queue wasvery long, as usual. When I gotnear the entrance, everyone infront of me was let in, thequeue disappeared, and I waschased to the back of the verylong applications queue. Thosepeople also said I wasn’tstanding in any queue. I triedto explain to them otherwise.

Now, just the previousmorning I stood in the verylong applications queue, and

No clue aboutqueue for new ID

then was sent to the shortercollections queue. I stood inthat queue from 08:00 to 10:30,due to computers being offline.

I stood in the queue marked“ID Collections”. At the teller Iwas told to stand in the infor-mation queue, being very longagain, and then in another verylong queue. These places are sodisorganised.

This is the time of the yearwhen all the craft marketscome into being – an occasionto look forward to, so that“hand-made arts and crafts”can be bought as specialaffordable Christmas gifts.

What a huge disappointmentawaits when you arrive andsome of the articles wereobviously sourced from cheapstores, as well as brand-namedbottled herbs and spicesadvertised on TV. Just whathas this to do with crafts?

I sincerely want to congratu-late the “real crafters” whowork on their special projectsto be sold at these markets.Keep up your amazing work.

SLICE OF LIFE

Please, turnoff yourcellphoneOur lives have become intrinsicallylinked with technology. Not feeling theweight of a cellphone in your pocketleaves you feeling vulnerable, naked.

While we’re more connected than everbefore, we’ve forgotten how to trulyconnect with those around us. How oftendo you sit around a table with friends, with at least one person (if not all ofthem) glued to their phones?

When did we forget our manners? When did it become socially acceptable toignore your dinner company to reply to atext message or to answer emails whilein a meeting?

And surely switching your phone offduring an event, concert, movie, weddingor church service should be a basiccourtesy. Yet we regularly find theromantic love scene in a movie or eventhe vows of a bride and groom interrupt-ed by the chirping of a phone.

What does it say about us as a societythat money has to be spent on advertis-ing to ensure cellphones are turned offbefore a movie and priests have to startsermons by asking that cellphones beswitched off?

It speaks to a lack of respect for othersthat we can’t even manage simplecellphone etiquette. It’s really simple: ifyou wouldn’t talk during the event, others shouldn’t hear your cellphone.

It’s a courtesy that we should expendwithout thinking, as simple as sayingplease or thank you.

So please turn off your cellphone.Thank you.

Not all children can take for granted the joyof being able to watch their favouritemovieon the big screen. On Thursday morning, some 100 vision

impaired children, many of them sufferingfrom eye abnormalities as a result of FoetalAlcohol Syndrome (FAS), were treated toMaya the Bee at Ster-Kinekor CapeGate, having discovered their newfound vision. For these little five to seven-year-olds,

this was their first cinema experience afterreceiving either spectacles or eye surgery.“Growth inside the retina is affected by

FAS, resulting in these children having se-vere vision impairment. Some of them canbe helped bymeans of spectacles or inmoresevere cases surgery if detected earlyenough,” France Nxumalo from the BrienHaden Vision Institute in Durban told Tyg-erBurger on Thursday. The institute is currently in the process

of expanding their work to the WesternCape winelands and has teamed up with lo-cal NPO My Little Eye.“We go to wine farms to screen the chil-

dren of farm workers for vision impair-

ment. We then refer them to clinics and in-stitutions such as Brien Haden to assistthem with the help they might need,” saysRamona Lubbe from My Little Eye.Since 2005, Ster-Kinekor, through their

flagship social investment programme Vi-sion Mission, has partnered with strategicpartners to help children such as these.“Vision Mission has for the past 10 years

offered eye sight screening and spectaclesto children from previously disadvantagedbackgrounds across the country. With over281 100 beneficiaries to date, the programmeaims to eradicate preventable blindness inchildren,” Ster-Kinekor social investmentmanager Geraldine Engelman said. The day’s activities also marked World

SightDayand the start ofNationalEyeCareAwareness month.Engelman says sight is integral to appre-

ciating the wonderful world of cinema onthe big screen.“Research has revealed that blindness

could be avoided in eight out of 10 cases inour country if proper testing is conductedat an early age. Since a child’s visual systemis fully developed between 10 and 11 years,a problem, discovered early, can often becorrected and vision preserved,” she says.

Nxumalo added that vi-sion has a great impact onthe learning process.“As a result, poor eye

sight can not only makethe learning experiencerather uncomfortable, italso hinders progress inthe classroom, sportingand extra-mural abilityand social integration.”V To follow National Eye CareAwareness month activities, vi-sit the Ster-Kinekor Theatrespage on Facebook and followSter-Kinekor on Twitter: @ster-kinekor.

Awaking from their winter dormancy, the devilish and very invasive littleblack and yellow paper wasps are

back to make life hell for residents in thenorthern suburbs of Cape Town. But theCity says they are ready for this onslaught.Since invading the far northern suburbs

of the city several years ago, the species –said to havemade their appearance inKuilsRiver in 2010 – have plagued households.“Since the launch of the invasive wasp

control (IWC) teams in 2014, the City has re-moved 8 000 European paper wasp nests, mostly from areas such as Durbanville,Kuils River, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein,Bellville and Bothasig and are ready to as-sist the public,” saysMaycomember for en-ergy, environmental and spatial planning,JohanvanderMerwe.According to him thewasp season usually occurs during warmerperiods, from September to May.Both alien invasive wasp species, the Eu-

ropean paper wasp (polistes dominula) andthe German wasp (vespula germanica) arelisted as a category 1b invasive species.“This means that scientists have agreed

that the wasps, by law, have to be removedas they pose a threat to the local ecosystemand several important industries such asdeciduous fruit, wine and bee keeping in-dustries,” says Van der Merwe.Cape Town residents are advised to be

aware that the sting from these wasps isparticularly painful.“Last season there were numerous re-

ports of the German wasp stinging workersharvesting grapes and other fruit. Thewasps also present a hazard to residentswhomayunintentionally disturb a colony.”A second team was introduced, following

the hundreds of sightings and wasp remov-al requests by residents last summer.“Residents are encouraged to report

sightings to the City or contact a reputablepest control company. Property owners areprimarily responsible for pest control ontheir premises, and the City will assist ac-cording to available capacity,” he says.If nests are removed privately, property

owners are urged to send a report contain-ing their street address and the number ofnests removed to [email protected] as this helps with the City’s fu-ture planning and research.“The City will make every effort to assist

the public where possible, within our avail-able capacity, to ensure their safety andpeace of mind,” says Van der Merwe. He adds that the IWC teams are neither

trained nor equipped to deal with bee re-moval. Should residents require bee remov-al, they should contact a professional beekeeper. The team will also not exterminateindigenous wasps.V Residents who would like assistance can uploadsightings on the spotter network at www.cape-towninvasives.org.za/edrr/target-list, and thereaft-er they will be contacted to arrange the removal. For a description of the booking procedures, pleasevisit www.capetowninvasives.org.za/news

Bullet was banned by the apartheidgovernment after its second screen-ing at the Eyethu cinema in Soweto.Though the banwas later lifted, pro-ducers never pursued another re-lease until 2013.

“To be part of a 75th anniversary isalways special, but to be part of amemorial event of that period in

time is really special.”So says Barrie Jones, treasurer and chor-ister of the Cape Welsh Choir. The all-malegroup will be presenting a very special con-cert to commemorate the 75th anniversaryof the Battle of Britain on Wednesday 28 Oc-tober.The choir has been presenting an annualcommemorative concert at the Simon’sTown Naval Base Church for the last 15years and has a long standing relationshipwith the organisers, the RAF Association ofSouth Africa. With the 75th anniversary being “quite amilestone”, this year’s concert will be some-thing very special.“For us it’s a big departure,” Barrie says, explaining that they would normally go onstage and sing in theWelshmale voice choirstyle. This time round, the Cape Welsh Choirhas put a full production or showcase togeth-er in the spirit of reflecting the “era and cir-cumstances” of the period around WorldWar Two.The concert takes place against the back-drop of a specially-built set that recreates atypical bomb shelter in the London Under-groundwith the choir dressed in clothes typ-ical of the era.“It sounds dramatic maybe, but they werehard times, so there are no pink shirts forexample. It’s all very staid, working-classstuff.”They’ll be singing medleys of a selectionof well-known songs from the time. “All ofthose songswere used to embolden that spir-it of resistance.” Barrie explains that musicwas used inWorldWarTwo to unifyBritain.

Many of the songs were popularised by “theforce’s sweetheart”, Vera Lynn.SouthAfrican soloist Yvette Elliott will bebringing her songs back to life, completewith period costumes. For a bit of variation, they’ll be joined by the “rousing” Cape FieldArtillery Pipes and Drums as well as guestsfrom the UK: the RAF Salon Orchestra withtheir big band sound and theQueen’s ColourSquadron with their precision marchingdisplay. All of this will be neatly threaded togetherwith a “well-constructed” narrative put to-gether by Reverend Ralph Thornley, a keenamateur historian. “He’s got a wealth of in-formation and knowledge.”Thornley’s narrative will tell the story ofthe four months of the Battle of Britain, in-

terspersed with audio visual clips to helprecreate the atmosphere around the war.“I think it’s going to be a very special occa-sion,” says Barrie, adding: “It’s going to bea once in a lifetime opportunity.”Made up of members from all over theCape Peninsula, the Cape Welsh Choir haspresented more than 800 concerts in its 33year existence. “So, we’ve got a few mile-stones of our own.”The choir’s primary focus is on fund-rais-ing for third parties and so far they’ve beenable tohelpotherorganisations raise anesti-mated R3 million.Three members – Alan Thompson fromPinelands, Ian Jones from Table View andFreddieAhern fromBrackenfell – have beenwith the choir since the very beginning.

While the average age of the choir mem-bers is 50 plus, they are always looking fornew and younger members and use everyconcert as a recruitment opportunity.Anybody interested in joining the choircan contact chairman Graham Tennison on021 696 1716 or 073 463 1028.The concert on Wednesday 28 Octobertakes place at the Claremont Civic Centrewith two performances at 15:00 and 19:30.Tickets cost R150 or R120 for the matineefrom Computicket and proceeds will go to-wards the RAF (SA) Benevolent Fund.V For more information about the Cape Welsh Choir, visit their website at capewelshchoir.co.za or findthem on Facebook. LOUISA STEYL@lounotes

She’s a singer, a writer, an artist, an en-trepreneur and a mother.Retreat’s Lydia Lategan is a woman of

many talents. She’ll be showcasing a fewof themwhen she releases the first threetracks off her upcoming album with aconcert at Upper Hall Church, in SonataStreet, Steenberg, on Sunday 1 Novem-ber.Lydia was just 17 when she started

writingher owngospelmusic. Itwas alsoaround this time that she started per-forming and developed the dream to re-lease an album, “or a cassette as we hadin those days”.No less than 500 songs and a number

of years later, Lydia is finally getting achance to live out her dream. While she plans to officially launch

Master of the eagle – her debut album, containing 12 tracks – in February nextyear, she’ll be giving musicfans a taste of her upcoming re-lease with a three-track EP ti-tled He knew everything, at theend of the month. “They arethree beautiful songs.”Lydia described her music as

“very inspiring.” A mixture ofcountry and gospel, the upcom-ing album tells the story of herown personal journey of resto-ration through the Lord. While she had many songs to

choose from, shemadeher choi-ces for the album just before go-ing into studio with producerDamian Roman. The result isan album Lydia says will be en-couragement for people fromall walks of life. She says music is in her

blood. Her aunt was a tap danc-er and she recalls watching herconcerts as a child, saying thatshe was captured by the art ofperformance. Her grandfatherwas also a musician, as wereher three brothers.A neighbour who heard her

singing with her brother oneday, spoke a blessing over hervoice and talents. “Those beau-tiful words follow me,” shesays, adding that she gives Godall the glory for her abilities.Likemanywriters, itwas love thatmo-

tivated Lydia to begin writing. She start-ed with a story about a childhood love, the same love that later in her life in-spired 70 poems in three days. One ofthese, “Down memory lane” was evenpublished in a poetry anthology.Aswithherpoetry, Lydia’s songs come

straight from the heart, telling storiesthat cover the full spectrum of humanemotions – from lost love to hope and un-expected luck. She is constantly writing, sometimes

working on three songs at a time, butwhen she isn’t making music, Lydia isalso a painter. Some of her work will beexhibited before her performance at the

Upper Hall Church. When she isn’t living out her creative

passions, the busy mother of two – nowadult – children runs her own signwrit-ing, catering and interior decoratingbusinesses.“If the one is quiet, I go on to the next

one.”As if she isn’t busy enough, Lydia is

full of plans. While she is preparing forher two launches – on 1 November andher official album launch in Februarynext year – she is also planning a gospelconcert titledOld time religionwhere sheplans to bring various artists together toperform “songs you don’t hear any-more”.She plans to bring more artists togeth-

er for a dinner show and has dreams oftwo more albums – one in Afrikaans andthe other a country album. “I can’t waitto get there.”Lydia is looking for reliable and pro-

fessional musicians with their own in-

struments for her future shows at CDlaunches and will be hosting auditionson Saturday 28 November. Interestedmusicians can send her a WhatsAppmessage on 082 624 2871 or call074 742 4131 for more information. She will be joined on Sunday 1 Novem-

ber by guest artists Pastor John Rhode,Pastor JP Smith, Sister Mac on accordi-on and PastorAndré Lindsey among oth-ers.V Tickets for the show cost R100 including a CDand refreshments or R60 without the CD. Guestsare asked to pre-book tickets for catering pur-poses. For bookings, more information or to bookLydia for a performance, call her on 074 742 4131or send an email to [email protected].

The annual Cape inter-provincial figureskating championship will take placeat the ice rink at GrandWest from Fri-

day to Sunday. This promises to be a bumper event with

entries streaming in from all skating re-gions.Approximately 120 skaters are expect-ed.The competition comprises solo skating

where the skater performs required ele-ments of their own – including jumps and

spins – to music, as well as pair skating andsynchronized skating where a team of 12 to16 skaters perform in unison to music witha variety of lifts, circles, lines and wheelswith intricate footwork.Judges from all over South Africa will be

officiating at this event, and there is an in-ternational selection meeting scheduledstraight after, where the skaters will be as-sessed for international participation andthe world championship.

The skaters are scored on a computerisedsystem with instant playback facilities, andthe judgesmake use of this to give the skaterthe best result when assessing their per-formance.Western Province is the largest skating

GOLF: AMATEUR CONTINUES DREAM SEASON

Altin van der Merwe won his first tournament in the Kuils RiverChallenge on the IGT Tour Cape last week. PHOTO: IGT TOUR CAPE

Bellville amateur Altin van derMerwe continued a dream seasonwith a breakthrough victory in

the Kuils River Challenge on the IGTTour Cape last week.

The 18-year-old posted an impressivefive-under-par 67 in the final round atKuilsRiverGolf Club tomarch to a sev-en-stroke victory on 14-under-par 202.

Van der Merwe, who is a member ofthe Bellville Golf Club, denied a hostof top international visitors when heclaimed the Curro South African Jun-iors International (SAJI) at Durban-ville Golf Club in March and fivemonths later came heartbreakinglyclose to a second international victoryin the Global Junior Golf Tour’s RBGerman Junior. He opened with a mediocre 70, but

drew on the experience gained abroadto open up a four shot lead with a blis-tering 65 in the second round.

“I was pretty disappointed with myfirst round and I knew it would take ahuge effort to get in front, especiallywith the pros in the field,” he said.“I was a member at Kuils River for

four years, so I used everything I re-membered about the course and every-thing I learned this year to get myselfinto contention in the second round.”

Van derMerwe reeled in four birdiesto offset a lonebogeyat five on the frontnine. He traded birdies for bogeys forthe first four holes after the turn, butended the sequence with a birdie at 10.

“I overshot the green at 10 andcouldn’t up-and-down to save par, thenmade a superb up-and-down for birdieat 11. At 12, I drove it into the trees onthe right and all I could do was chipout.

“Then I hit it close to the pin at 13and boxed the putt for birdie. I over-shot the green again at 14, but this timeI made the up-and-down for birdie toend that run.”

Van der Merwe parred his way to 18,and drained a 22-footer for birdie at 18,becoming only the second amateur totriumph in the IGT Tour Cape equal-ling the lowest 54-hole total set byAdri-an Ford in the Milnerton Classic inJune.

All that mattered for the Brackenfell

High School graduate, though, was get-ting the job done.“I lost by two shots to Trevor Maho-

ney in my first IGT Tour Cape starthere at Kuils River in June, so it feelsreally good to pull it through this timearound,” Van der Merwe said.“We didn’t have that many pros in

the field this week, but it was reallynice to test myself, and to see where Irate. We’ll have to see how I do in theupcoming events at other courses, butthis kind of performance givesme a lotof confidence ahead of Q-School in De-cember.”Van der Merwe will only be able to

bank half of the first prize cheque tostay within the amateur rules, but hewasmore than happy to let the balancego to the IGT Tour Cape DevelopmentFund.“When an amateur wins, they put

the balance of the prize money into afund that is used to finance playerswhowouldn’t otherwise be able to com-pete on the IGT Tour Cape. I think thatis a really neat development initia-tive.”

Century City Athletic Club runner Tan-ya Posthumus-Fox won the HermanusWhale Festival 21km race in a time of1:29:40.

What makes this even more special isthat itwas the first sub-90minutesTanyahas achieved in a 21km race.

Tanya, who came second in the samerace last year, says she felt more relaxedand calm than ever during a race.Although it was only a week apart,

Tanya competed in theGunRun 21kmonSaturday, the day after her 35th birth-day.

“I kept the celebrations at bay untilafter the race!” she quipped, adding thatnormally she would not race again sosoon.

She said her legs were stiff and sore,

mostly because of all the hills in the Her-manus race, but she will be visiting herphysiotherapist again this week to helprepair her body.“However, it is now two years since I

did theGunRun, and I really have a boneto pick with this particular race, as thelast time I did it I was forced to literallywalk the last 5km due to injury.”She did the Gun Run in a time of

01:27:14 making her the sixth out of 2 424female runners to cross the line. She add-ed that there are a couple of other trackevents (800m, 1500m and 5000m) on thehorizon, as well as some shorter road ra-ces (10-15km).“However,my next 21km road race aft-

er Saturday is the HFPA half marathonin November in Bloubergstrand.”
