The suspect is currently facing murder and a rape charges at the Goodwood Magis- trate’s Court, but police are investigating further allegations. He might be connected to six bodies which have been uncovered in an open field next to the station since February last year. On Monday, magistrate Sean Lea post- poned the case to 19 January. The suspect was arrested at his home in Gugulethu on Wednesday evening after a breakthrough was made in the search for the Century City murderer, with the last body having been found on 19 December last year, Afrikaans daily Die Burger reported on Fri- day. The man was arrested by a task team con- nected to the police’s Operation Combat. Victim’s belongings It was reported that the “drugged” suspect refused to let the police in when they knocked on his door. Apparently two items belonging to vic- tims were found in his room. The man has since also been linked to the murder of an unidentified woman who was found on the Goodwood side of the station in September 2013. A reliable source told Die Burger on Thursday that the last body, like the others, was naked with the hands tied behind the back and buried in a shallow grave. The body was not very badly decomposed and there were marks, which looked like bruis- es, on her head. All the bodies were of black women. Besides the bruises, it also looked as if a piece of the woman’s face was “missing”. “I can’t say if was possibly because of rats in the bush that ate it, or if the murderer cut it off,” the source says. It was previously reported that the police were investigating the possibility that the murders were committed by the same per- son or people, as well as the possibility that the Century-City murderer had killed else- where in the province. Sources close to the investigation revealed that the suspect gave himself away after he made use of one of his victim’s phones. One of the victims was identified as No- themba Ndondo from Khayelitsha. Disbelief The 20-year-old’s body was found on De- cember 19, four days after she left for work and did not return home. The Khayelitsha resident reportedly worked as a cleaner at Ratanga Junction. Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille earlier issued a reward of R50 000 for anyone with information leading to the murderer’s ar- rest. The aunt of the suspect was recently inter- viewed by Die Burger and described the sus- pect as “quiet, a loner, but alway friendly”. She added that she is still in a state of dis- belief. Provincial police spokesperson Lieuten- ant Colonel André Traut, said they will not currently be divulging any specifics sur- rounding the case. One week is all that is left of a ridiculously wonderful summer holiday enjoyed by Western Cape pupils. One week left to sleep late and one week left to conquer the Monkey Falls. This Ratanga Junction ride has been turning stomachs throughout the holidays. SERIAL MURDERS: SUSPECT WORKED IN SECURITY SECTOR

Guard held for killingsThe 30-year-old man who was arrested inconnection with a series of murders after anumber of bodies were discovered near Cen-tury City station, was a local security guard.

The suspect is currently facing murderand a rape charges at the Goodwood Magis-trate’s Court, but police are investigatingfurther allegations.

A woman is fraudulently collecting moneyfor the Boyes Helping Hands non-profit or-ganisation (NPO).

According to the Milnerton NPO’s foun-der, Deborah Boyes, her organisation hasnever gone door-to-door to raise funds.

“This woman has been described to be inher early fifties, with dark hair of medium

length, well spoken and apparently extre-mely convincing,” says Boyes.

The suspect apparently goes from door-to-door in the Bothasig area asking for fundsfor the NPO.

“I do not have any people fundraising forme,” says Boyes.

The NPO is “struggling terribly” to raisefunds to buy land to build a home for abusedwomen and children, so someone usingtheir name in vain is upsetting for Boyes.

“ There is an urgent need for a safe homefor victims of violence and it’s terribly up-setting that somebody is fraudulently ma-king money that should be going to makea safe home for those who really need it.”

The NPO is advertising their aim onwww.newbeginningshome.wordpress.com.

They are asking people to donate anysmall change they have lying around, be-cause any amount will eventually make abig difference.

Ons besef baie van ons inwoners kryfinansieel swaar en dus bied ons verskeieopsies om met die betalingsverantwoorde-likheid te help,’ sê Siyabulela Mamkeli, dieStad se burgemeesterskomiteelid vir mens-

Everything was ready for the Gordonsto move into their newly-purchasedParklands home.

All their possessions were loaded onto atrailer, their minds were already set onhow theywant their house to look and theyfinalised the termination of their previouslease.Everything was ready, up until the mo-

ment they tried to collect the keys from theestate agent who sold them the house.It turns out the previous tenant never

moved out.

Common problemAccording to the Sotheby’s Realty estate

agent who they bought the house from, He-lene Ludwig, incidents such as this are be-coming more common.“The laws must be changed! It can’t go

on like this! Presently you cannot evict so-meone if they don’t have another placethey can go to,” elaborates Ludwig.According to her the previous tenant,

PastorUgochukwuOparacho, had a signedagreement in which he acknowledged thathe and his family were going to vacate thepremise by 31 October.

Locked outBut Oparacho never left.That’s when the “nightmare” started for

the Gordons, who were stuck with no ac-commodation and all their possessions ona trailer.They were supposed to move into the

house they bought on 1 November.Despite paying the monthly bond, they

have still not been able to move into thehouse they’ve bought.Over two months later and Oparacho

and his family are still living there.According to Ryan Gordon, Oparacho

has received an eviction order and mustvacate the premises by the middle of Fe-bruary, but the latter will not leave it atthat.Oparacho has sought the legal advice of

attorney Paul Sharoux, who has told Ty-gerBurger that this matter is far from clo-sed.Another local newspaper ran an article

while thematter was still in court and Sha-roux says this is a case of contempt ofcourt.“My instruction is to proceed to pull the

whole application for eviction and subse-quently we might bring in charges of defa-mation of character. My client has no com-ment at this stage, but he will challengewhatever happens from a legal point ofview,” says Sharoux.Gordonhopes thematterwill be resolved

as soon as possible, after anxiously witnes-sing it dragging on much longer than hewould ever have thought.

“There is an end in sight... I just try tolook at the positives. At themoment the or-der says they must vacate the premises on13 February, and if they are still there thenthe sheriff will remove them on the 15th.

Illegal squattersWe can’t afford to continue renting and

paying our bills, so we will be in the daythey move out,” he says.The system has left him speechless.“I canunderstand the lawprotecting ille-

gal eviction. It protects the innocent. Butthis is not the case,” he adds.Ludwig says that Oparacho has signed a

lease agreement for a year, which was sup-posed to be terminated on 31 October.“They are illegal squatters and we have

done everything by the book to get themout. I cannot believe our constitution pro-tects them. The pastor has been offered aselection of homes as alternative accom-modation, but he refused point blank.”

own family.Pietie, as he is now known, has made a

new home for himself with the Lepnik/Lam-brechts family in Stellenberg.“My grandmother was eating peaches in

the braai room and he just came in and hada piece and stayed,” explains nine-year-oldBjörn Lepnik.“There have been other birds here before,

but they usually just stay a while and thenleave again,” his mom, Adele, says.Matriarch Barbara Lambrechts recalls

seeing Pietie while she was hanging up thewashing and when she went back inside toknit, he simply joined her.“But once he saw Björn and Adele he just

stayed with them,” she says.Pietie seems to be a normal laughing dove,

but is very tame and loves being around peo-ple. He especially enjoys sitting on people’sshoulders or heads.“He must be used to people,” Adele says,

because he even allows people to touch him,but he’s got no tag on his leg, like homingpigeons usually have. His origin still re-mains a mystery.Pietie flew into the family’s lives around

23 December last year, and has been thereever since. Adele initially tried to encouragehim to sleep in a bird cage, but he seemsmo-re comfortable spending his nights on top ofthe extractor fan above the stove in her kit-chen.During the day he often perches himself

on Adele’s laptop and “helps” her type, orwatches TV series with her, but only afterhe’s done his morning gallivanting.Another reason she believes he must be

used to human contact is the fact that he lis-tens when you speak to him and even playswithBjörn.He comes insidewhen the familyask him to and sits wherever they indicatehe should.When Pietie first came to stay with them,

he only made cooing sounds, but lately, he’sadded dove-like sounds to his vocal repertoi-re,whichmakesAdele thinkhe’s still young.Adele has made sure that Bjorn under-

children receive these vaccinations, ad-ministered via an injection in their upperarm. Prevention is better than cure.

“Also, our clinics offer these immuni-sations free of charge. We still have a fewdays left before the academic year starts,so now is as good a time as any to get thevaccinations done for children who needto get these shots,” Van Minnen said.

community offered help.While walking her dogs, Parklands resi-

dent Reese Harley noticed a homeless mansleeping in the park. In an areawhere peopleoften distrust the homeless so much theydon’t even make eye contact, Reese begantalking to him. His name is Michael Ntehe-lang and they gradually got to know eachother during her evening walks.Reese provided a few things to make his

life more comfortable, and then she saw anopportunity to change his life completely.Reese runs a charity organisation called

Pawfriends, helping township dogs and cats.She gets them sterilised to prevent unwan-ted litters and helps obtain veterinary carewhen needed. Sometime she works with theFallen Angels animal rescue organisation,a haven for forgotten and neglected animalsnear Melkbosstrand. They were started inFebruary 2014 by Gayl Basson.Gayl and Shireen Williams are working

very hard, with limited resources, to createa much-needed shelter for animals in need.Table View and surrounding areas is a vast,sprawling urban area which includes thepoor communities of Dunoon and Joe Slovo,

yet there is no SPCA or animal welfare shel-ter in the area. All the organisations wor-king in the area rely on a foster system tohouse animals in need.Fallen Angels still has no electricity and

very little infrastructure. They needed helpwith building enclosures and kennels, aswell as general care of their animals. Reesesaw a person who was down on his luck andneeded a job and a home, so she spoke to Shi-reen and suggested that Michael might besuited to help them.Shireen didn’t hesitate. She trusted Ree-

se’s judgement and immediately went tofetch Michael and his few belongings.After three years on the streets, a bad fa-

mily situation and a drug history, Michael(22) is now living and working at Fallen An-gels. He has been there for two months andis very happy. He loves working with thedogs and helping with the cleaning and gar-dening. He is learning new skills every dayand is very happy to have a place to stay.Fallen Angels and Pawfriends have chan-

City to rotate load shedding timesAs of 1 February, the City of Cape Town

will be implementing a new load shed-ding schedule when load shedding is

declared by Eskom.The current load shedding schedule using

the days of the week was first implementedin 2008 and has been regularly updated sin-ce. It was designed specifically for occasio-nal load shedding during peak demand ti-mes.

Inconvenient“Since the latter weeks of last year, Es-

kom’s national control centre declared loadshedding on a regular basis and over wee-kends. This has led to a situation where so-me residents repeatedly experienced sche-

duled power outages at the most inconve-nient times and days of the week,” said theCity’s mayco member for utility services,Ernest Sonnenberg.

Frequent rotation“In order to address this matter, the City

has set up a new load shedding schedule thatprovides a more frequent rotation and is tobe implemented in accordancewith the daysof the month instead,” says Sonnenberg..With this new schedule, theCitywill ensu-

re residents experience scheduled power ou-tages at a different time and week day thanbefore, rotating the inconvenience of poweroutages across all supply areas.“From 1 February, the City will be imple-

menting load sheddingaccording to thisnewschedulewhen it is instructed to do so by Es-kom. An insert with the new load sheddingschedule and an area map of the differentsupply areas across the city will be distribu-ted with local newspapers during the lastweek of January. Residents are advised tokeep these and to refer to the schedule andthe map so they can take the necessary pre-cautions whenever load shedding is requi-red by Eskom,” says Sonnenberg.

I have been reading withinterest the current debatebetween the anti and pro-gungroups.

Predictably, that old andwell-used expression that“those who live by the swordwill die by the sword” hasmade its appearance. A veryreasonable sentiment, to besure, but it does not stand upto scrutiny from a legitimategun owners point of view.Genghis Khan lived by thesword. So does the modern-dayISIS. Genghis did, and ISISsurely will, die by the sword.The rest of us, who need toprotect ourselves from thosewho, like them, seek to imposetheir will on us, have to livewith the sword. There is a verybig difference here!

Unfortunately, there are fartoo many people in this worldwho, despite what must surelybe an in-built knowledge ofwhat is right and what iswrong, choose to impose theirwill on others. History showsthat has always been how it is– and that is always how it willbe. Whether on a global level,or on a personal level, theprinciple is the same.

As far as divine interventionis concerned, I do not believethat any of the world’s multipleGods are going to come to ouraid and protect us. It would benice if this did happen, though.We would not have to worryabout wearing seat belts,locking our doors and gates orwalking in dark alleys. Wecould eat, drink and smokewhatever we wanted. We couldpark our cars and have nofears that they would not bethere when we came back. Inshort, we could simply rock onand not have to rely on otherpeople and/or clever devices toprotect and save us.

But, in a real world, wecannot just sit back and leaveour safety and wellbeing tosomeone else – or somethingelse. That is a cop-out. We have

to play our part and do whate-ver it takes to help God,whichever one we do (or donot) believe in, to help us. Thetrick here is to ensure thatwhen helping ourselves we donot inadvertently become thebad guys.

The introduction of the newgreen lidded wheelie bins forrecycled waste in the Bellvillearea was an excellent innovati-on. This has given all the localresidents a chance to getinvolved in a useful project.Unfortunately, there alwaysseems to be a downside.

Where I live in La Rochellewe have our normal refuseremoval service on Wednesdayand our recycled material onThursday. It is customary forresidents to put their bins outfirst thing in the morning. Thisis soon followed by a stream ofstrangers who inspect the binsfor useful material. Theirpreference seems to be bottlesand similar saleable objects. Ihave no problem with thesegentlemen collecting thismaterial and disposing of itsomewhere for remuneration.After all we are all endeavou-ring to eke out a living. What Ido feel strongly about is whenthey sit in the park to sort theirsaleable material and leave alltheir discarded mess behind forlocal residents to clean up. Mybiggest concern, however, isthat if this practice escalatesand there is little left in therecycle bins, it would no longerbe profitable for the recyclecompany to continue this verynecessary service.

The homeless problem inBellville is now becomingchronic and if this matter is notseriously attended to we willsoon be having more peopleliving on the streets than in thehouses.

Hoewel die meeste lande dié terreur-daad ten sterkste veroordeel het, hetvryheid van spraak weer op nuut onderdie vergrootglas gekom. Baie kommenta-tors meen dat die satiriese koerantCharlie Hebdo alle grense van vryheidvan spraak oortree het deur sy draakste-kery met Islam en ander godsdienste.

Wat dié kommentators nie in ag neemnie, is dat vryheid van spraak in dieFranse tradisie geen grense ken nie – ’nland met ’n eeue oue geskiedenis vanskerp en soms kwetsende satire.

Hoewel dié soort satire in weinig anderlande in die wêreld geduld word – selfsnie eers in die VSA en Brittanje nie –hou die beginsel daarvan tog vir onsalmal in Suid-Afrika ’n les in.

Verdraagsaamheid teenoor mense watnie dieselfde mening as jy huldig nie, isheel moontlik die grootste hiervan. Asiemand nie aan jou kerk behoort, joupolitieke sienswyse deel nie, nie vir diedieselfde rugbyspan as jy skree nie,beteken dit nie dat daardie persoonverkeerd is en sosiaal gekastreer moetword nie. Elkeen is geregtig op symening en moet toegelaat word om dituit te spreek. Wanneer jy mense daardiereg wil ontneem, maak jy jouself skuldigaan fundamentalisme. Dit is wanneeremosie alle rasionele denke vernietig.

En ongelukkig ook ’n tendens is wathopeloos te veel in ons land kop uitsteek.

The Spur Cape Summer Trail Series getsgoing at Tygerberg Nature Reserve tonight(Wednesday).

The series is one of the most popularevents on the South African trail runningcalendar, with each race in the countrywideseries usually selling out. This year seemsto be no different.

About 800 runners are expected to take ontonight’s challenging course, starting atsunset.

In order to cater for the growing numberof runners, the Spur Trail Series™ will forthe first time implement batching. In boththe long and the short course, four batcheswill set off two minutes apart in order to al-leviate congestion on route and make theexperience more enjoyable to both the frontrunners as well as the back-enders.

Bernard Rukadza will again be the manto beat as he returns to defend his summerlong course championship title. Some of his

strongest competition will come from long-time short course top performers RaydonBalie and Riaan Wildskut, as well as triath-lon veteran Lieuwe Boonstra.

In the ladies field, Marié Wessels will lineup as the favourite but this is always a wideopen race and it remains to be seen who willgive her a run for her money.

The second race in the series, which alsostarts at sunset, will take place at the Con-stantia Greenbelt on Wednesday 28 Janua-ry, with the third race taking place at Leba-non Forest in the Elgin Valley on Sunday1 February.

The annual Jointeze Dan Luyt 15 km roadrace organized by the Bellville AthleticClub takes place on Wednesday 21 January.

It is the Peninsula’s oldest road race, thefirst one having taken place in 1951. Entry

A golf day in aid of the Yarden Children’s En-richment Centre in Durbanville is due to ta-ke place on 12 February at the Bellville GolfClub.

The centre is set to open this month andthe organisation is in desperate need of dona-tions.

The idea for the centre came about whenthe parents of Pierre Cloete, who has a spas-tic quadriplegia cerebral palsy impairmentas well as epilepsy, struggled to find a schoolor daycare centre that would be able to ac-commodate him.

For the first eight years of his life, a full-ti-me caregiver took care of him. After reali-sing there is a need for such a school in thenorthern suburbs, Pierre’s parents decidedto open one.

The Bergsig Dutch Reformed Church inDurbanville has made five Sunday schoolclass rooms available to for the centre.

The twoweremomentarily suspended inthe air.Underneath them the inflatable pow-

er boat roared forward at 80km/h.“Somewhere along the line there is always

a close call,” states the pilot nonchalantly.Neither of the two could afford to fall off

the boat if their aspiration of finishing firstoverall in the Trans Agulhas Challenge wasto be realised.It was day five of the world’s toughest in-

flatable boat race and they were knee-deepin the long haul.Pilot Stefan Lindeque, and co-pilot Tony

Ingram hoped the 131km stretch from Gans-baai to Strand would be calm and unevent-ful, but they also knew that power boatingbeyond the waves was never really “calmand uneventful”.

Limits of enduranceThe twowere thus not surprised when the

waters became choppier than a lumberjackon steroids.For 10kmnearCapeHangklip their endur-

ance was tested to the limits – this after theycompleted 188km on day one, 86km on daytwo, 161km on day three and 111km on dayfour.“The stretch from Gansbaai to Strand is

usually flat, but that day it was really chal-lenging. The pounding water was extremelyrough. After five days, 10km of poundingwas the last thing we wanted,” says TableView’s Lindeque.At that stage of the race they knew they

stood a chance of not only winning theirclass, but also trumping the faster modifiedpowerboat class – something that no-one

has ever achieved before.But if one of them was thrown overboard

then the bid for this remarkable achieve-ment would have to wait till next year.After amoment that seemed to last an eter-

nity, Tony landed on the boat again.A split second later the airborne Stefan al-

so returned to the inflatable Nulandis.That was close...

Home stretchTheir backs were aching, their arms were

numb, but they were not going to throw inthe towel.He adds that day three of the Trans Aghul-

the overall winners with a time of ninehours and 51 minutes.“Wewere in a different class, and themod-

ified class, which is faster than ours, alwayswin the overall.”This victory will taste sweeter than any of

their previous ones, of which there aremany.The 41-year-old Stefan has been World

Champion on three occasions and has never

looked back in regret for choosing the sportin 1998.“Having grownup inMelkbosstrand, surf-

ing was always a great love of mine. ThenI saw these boats that can actually race in-side the surf line and was drawn to it. I’mjust basically looking for any excuse to getinto the ocean.”

Hours in the gym to strengthen his coremuscles, arms and back has paid off manytimes, and it is clear that Stefan is a longwayfrom hanging up his power boating boots.The friendly rivalry between him and

northern suburbs’ Wimpie Ackermann, aswell as his insatiable desire to master thewaves, will keep him pushing the limits.
